#I really really like the idea of her and spock having also been friends as kids

this post has me thinking about steve and eddie falling in love with each other through writing fanfic in the 80s
because in the eighties before you could publish stuff online, you had communities that would send each other hand written fic, right?
steve and eddie both end up writing fic for spock/kirk
steve gets into it because he and claudia watch star trek together and they've been watching it for years when she shows him some cute fluffy fic a friend of hers wrote and he finds that he really likes it. maybe he starts off not knowing that he likes guys, but through fic he realizes that hey, he's kind of felt things about guys before that's similar to the stuff he's reading
and he gets enmeshed in this somewhat local community of fic writers and they all mail each other fic and give each other feedback and write on post it notes how much they loved reading it before passing it along to the next person
and steve has a particular writer that he's absolutely enamored with
the way they write, the tales they weave, it's all so good. they're funny and some of the spicy stuff they write is good and he's always so excited whenever he opens a letter and it's their fic. and he thinks he's like falling for some housewife from Indianapolis and he's a little embarrassed about it because they only sign their name as EM so he has no idea who it is. (he's also embarrassed because some of the spicy stuff claudia writes is also good, but he tries not to think about how his friend's mom knows so much nsfw stuff about what two guys can get up to)
but anyway, he keeps writing long detailed commentary about EM's fics and sending it along to the next person meanwhile when Eddie gets his fics back, he's like lovestruck at steve's comments on his fics because he really gets it - really gets what eddie was going for. he understands the yearning eddie's trying to capture and he offers little meta-analyses about eddie's fics and some of the episodes and eddie is also like damn i'm really falling for someone's wife, aren't i?
anyway steve doesn't write his own fic yet because he doesn't have the confidence in his writing ability but EM encourages him so he eventually does write fic and EM ends up being his biggest cheerleader and offers him help in areas where he thinks he struggles so they start mailing stuff back and forth to each other before it goes out to the larger group
and they start sharing stuff about their real lives and they both come to realize that the person they're talking to isn't a woman and isn't married like most of the women in the community are
and then they're collaborating on fics together and writing some of the best stuff eddie's ever written and he's falling in love and steve is too
maybe they eventually share their identities over letters, and maybe there's a meetup one day and their eyes lock as soon as they see each other and steve is nervous. he's nervous because he's kind of idolized EM for so long and he doesn't want to say the wrong thing. because writing him has been easy, he has time to think about what he wants to say and how he wants to say it. but talking in person is much more on the spot thinking which he's never been good at
but he meets him and eddie seems just as nervous, not nearly as eloquent with his words in person as he is in the fanfiction steve's been reading for close to a year now. but steve thinks he's charming and he's just as enamored in person as he was over the letters they've been sending each other.
on the ride home, claudia is chattering away about how nice everyone is and how nervous she was to meet them, but they're all so sweet in person. and steve is half-listening, clutching the slip of paper eddie gave him with his number on it

Propaganda Under Cut
Joan Watson
How were BBC Sherlock shippers so rancid about a WOMAN who wasnt even in the SAME SHOW?????
Martin Freeman of BBC Sherlock insulted Elementary and specifically Lucy Liu in the press. He straight up called Lucy Liu a "dog" in an interview APPARENTLY as a joke, because calling female actors ugly is hilarious. Benedict Cumberbatch was more measured about it, but he still said he was cynical about Elementary because it would lose the "male friendship" dynamic, which of course Johnlock shippers used against Joan Watson fans. Even the lead BBC Sherlock actors got in on the yaoi victimization of Joan Watson... 😔
she wasn't even in the same SHOW as the yaoi I've been convinced she deserves to win the entire poll. I was a Johnlocker but I did watch the first season of Elementary and it was fine????? It was totally okay????? Especially in hindsight given how hard Sherlock season four flopped. Also Lucy Liu is a queen and deserved zero vitriol for *checks notes* playing a character???? A fucking fictional character???????? Oh my god we were all SO mean to this show and we (or at least I) thought it was like The Good Fight™️, like we were defending BBC Sherlock against copyright infringement and straightwashing and Jonny Lee Miller's bizarre scarf, (it wasn't a good scarf I do stand by that) but then Elementary didn't make Holmes and Watson a couple either???? And also it didn't insult its audience constantly etc etc we've all seen the Hbomberguy Sherlock is Garbage video. This is really long sorry hashtag justice for Joan Watson
Nyota Uhura
She's Spock's canon partner in AOS, and I get it because they're not a great couple, but she gets villianized in fic so much. They constantly make her an asshole (which totally has nothing to do with her being black /sarcasm) and abusive just for the crime of dating a man headcanoned as gay. And I mean, I think Spock is gay and her being a love interest was unnecessary but still! She's cool!
Oh my god so in the Star Trek reboot she’s Spock’s girlfriend and the fandom has no idea what to do with her??? Like she is ALWAYS either such a bitch or like the mom friend? And there is so much more to her character than that? But they always break down her character AND find a quick and easy way to break up her and Spock. I’m not even mad at that but at least treat their relationship with some weight instead of just being like ‘it never mattered’. People can love multiple people throughout the course of their lives. You know that right? Just because you loved someone before doesn’t make your new love any less special. And even headcanoning Spock as gay… you realize he doesn’t need to be attracted to Uhura for their relationship to have mattered, right? Even if he confused friendship for romantic attraction, him feeling such strong friendship and openly expressing it is so monumental for him!!!
she's dating Spock, who people ship with Kirk, so fans have decided that it's horrible writing and "really, they're just defending her, the movies turned her into just a love interests," which is not at all true. The movies do so much more for her to the point that the fans who have only seen the movies think that the main characters are Kirk, Spock, and Uhura instead of the Kirk, Spock, McCoy of the original series. Also having a black women being shown as being desired and loved in mainstream media, particularly by one of the most popular characters of all time, is a good thing, not making her "just a love interest"

Hemmer x fem!reader (can be read as romantic, however is more platonic with developing feelings) Words: 2.3K Summary: She never really learned anything about his home. Until one day she did Inspired by this post from @nichestartrekkie0-0 (If fanfics not your thing, just ignore this :)) so please chek out their art it's AMAZING
Tumblr media
A drop of sweat ran down her forehead, down her temple, down her cheek and was wiped aside by her sleeve before it could fall to the floor.
Her arms felt heavy, but she didn't dare move them for fear that the objects in them would fall to the ground and shatter. Something she could not afford, after all, Hemmer needed these things. At least she was certain there was no harm in them.
The cooling system was offline and no matter how hard the engineers tried, it wasn't getting any better. In the end, it had turned out to be a fault in the system, which could be rectified by a simple reboot.
The problem: this reboot took several hours.
Hours in which the Enterprise had become uncomfortably warm, at least by her standards. She knew from Spock that he enjoyed the temperature and Uhura also had few problems with the change.
However, apart from the fact that everyone felt temperatures differently, she knew that there was one person who would not like it at all: Hemmer.
Based on what she had heard from some of the junior engineers, Hemmer was in an even worse mood than usual, and the temperature was so bad that M'Benga had sent him to his quarters to rest for fear that the Aenar would suffer heat exhaustion. Something that would be even more fatal for Hemmer's species than for her own. M'Benga had eventually interrupted her, lying panting on the sofa, and asked her to check on the Aenar. After all, they both knew how incredibly stubborn their friend could be.
She had agreed without hesitation. Hemmer might have his rough edges, some of them deadly sharp, but he had a heart of gold and she cared for him deeply.
He was a good friend on whom she had always been able to rely, so she would not let him down now. Even if he was still unaware of his luck.
With her elbow, she managed to press the button next to his door, alerting him that someone wanted to come in. For a few moments she stood in the corridor, people walking past her and looking at her strangely, wondering if he was even there. Perhaps he had thrown caution to the wind and gone back to work?
She immediately shook her head and dismissed the idea. Hemmer might be stubborn from time to time and not listen to advice, and when he did he did so reluctantly, but he was not self-destructive.
If Doctor M'Benga told him that the work posed a risk to his health, he would follow the doctor's instructions, grumpily, but he would do it.
Hemmer didn't give her much time to think about it. The doors opened and she quickly entered to avoid standing around stupidly in the corridor any longer. Inside it was only slightly less stiflingly hot than outside, but it wasn't any hotter either, which she saw as a plus.
She looked around searchingly, but couldn't spot the engineer. "Hemmer?" Carefully setting the items down on the sofa, she decided to take off her uniform jacket.
The top underneath would have to do, otherwise she would suffer from heat exhaustion. "Are you all right? Where are you?"
There was silence for a while and she began to wonder whether the door had opened by chance and he was actually somewhere else, but at that moment Hemmer's muffled voice rang out. "I'm fine."
She wheeled round to the bathroom where his voice had come from and only now did she realise the faint sound of falling water. Of course, she silently scolded herself. When the air was too hot, water was an excellent way to cool off.
With long strides, she walked to the door and stopped so that the opening sensor could not detect her. "May I come in?"
A grunt sounded and she frowned worriedly when an approving grumble came from Hemmer.
"M'Benga asked me to come round," she explained as she stepped into the bathroom. "Besides, I was worried about you, I mean, I'm almost dying in these temperatures, I can hardly imagine that it's pleasant for-" As soon as her gaze fell on Hemmer, she faltered and stopped, stunned by the sight before her.
Hemmer seemed to have noticed, as she fell silence surprised and huffed.
"I know I know, I look like a drowned beaver, or whatever you humans call it. But it's the only way to survive this heat."
She broke out of her stupor long enough to lift the corners of her mouth in slight amusement. "It's 'you look like a drowned rat'. And, that's not what caught me by surprise."
Even if this was of course partly to blame for her sudden hesitation, after all she had never seen her friend in such a position before. He sat on the floor of the shower, clever idea the tiles were also cold, and let the cool water run down his body. Consequently, his hair clung to his face in lengthy strands, while his antennae swayed in a dance-like manner, evading the droplets in a game known only to them. But as already mentioned, it wasn't that which had left her speechless.
It was the sight of Hemmer clad in nothing more than shorts, snugly embracing his well-defined muscles, stretching just halfway up his thighs, which intensified her warmth.
This alone would have been enough to induce a blush, but something else caught her off guard. The tattoos.
Dark blue, almost black, tattoos meandered in wavy patterns across his physique, from his chest to his shoulders to his arms, down to his legs and, she surmised, down to his back. They reminded her somewhat of the traditional tattoos of the Maori or the Polynesians, indigenous peoples of Earth, but at the same time they looked completely different, like two worlds at opposite ends of the galaxy.
Hemmer cleared his throat, apparently waiting for an answer, and she squatted down in front of him to be at eye level with him. It may not have done him much good, but she felt more comfortable not having to stare down at him. "Don't take offence, but I didn't expect to find my best friend naked in his shower."
"I'm not naked," he grumbled and she grinned slightly as he tugged at his trousers like a grumpy child. "Besides, I didn't realise you had tattoos." His antennae went up for a moment before returning to their dance and Hemmer frowned. "No? I thought you knew." She laughed softly as she watched drops of water drip down his cheekbones. "How was I supposed to know? It's not like you're regularly parading around half-naked in front of me."
"Do I hear disappointment?" His voice and his grin were provocative, teasing and elicited a laugh from her. "Definitely not." Still, she couldn't ignore the tingling in her stomach, even if she tried her best.
They were silent for a few moments before Hemmer sighed and gestured for her to come closer. "I can feel the heat radiating off you. What's the point of you falling over on me here?" He did his best to sound disinterested, but she knew him well enough to know that he was genuinely worried about her.
She hesitated for a moment, but decided that modesty really wasn't appropriate at this point, and kicked off her trousers and socks so that she was squatting in front of him in her top and panties. No problem, she thought to herself and shifted her weight onto her knees.
She crawled over to him and let out a low cry of shock as the cold water hit her heated skin. It felt like tiny needles were piercing her skin and she pulled back, however Hemmer didn't seem to let that happen.
He grabbed her by the wrist and pulled her towards him with such force that she bounced against him and only prevented him from headbutting her by resting her hands on his chest. Not that she would have done anything to him.
She would have been the one with the concussion.
The cold water beat down on her mercilessly. She squealed and wriggled on Hemmer's lap, only realising later that she had landed there, but he didn't allow her to escape.
"You're burning up," he murmured and pulled her a little closer to him so that her hot skin was pressed against his pleasantly cool skin. "So stop squirming or I'll tie you up."
"Kinky," she murmured as her body seemed to slowly acclimatise to the difference in temperature. "Keep it down," came the reply and she grinned softly, slowly relaxing. The water felt good.
Gradually, she felt the feeling of stifling warmth disappear and her glowing skin lowered to temperatures that seemed more bearable, judging by the fact that Hemmer was now relaxing beneath her as well, even leaning into her touch.
"Aren't I too warm for you?" He just shook his head before leaning it against the tiled wall behind him, a slight smile on his face. "It's acceptable. Besides, I know my skin is cool enough to give you relief." She snorted at his posturing, but made no move to free herself from her place on his lap.
"Actually, I came to help you with that." He chuckled softly. It was a sound that came from deep in his chest, where she was still resting her hands, deep and real, and she felt warmth spreading through her again, but this time a different kind of warmth.
"I'm used to getting used to this kind of heat. Have you ever been to California? It was just as bad." She nodded, giving in to exhaustion after a while and leaning her head against his shoulder. "You are indeed nice and cool."
Her hands wandered from his chest to his arms when something struck her and made her lift her head. "Wait, are your tattoos prominent?"
Her fingers danced over the patterns of his tattoos, eliciting a shudder from him that she didn't realise, and sure enough, she could tell that the tattoos weren't just ink poked under the skin, but actually stood out with slight bulges.
They were barely noticeable unless you were sitting half-naked on top of each other, though she guessed it was a lot easier for the heightened senses of the Aenar to detect.
"It would be strange any other way," Hemmer returned with amusement, placing a hand on hers and running it along his collarbone. "Considering we Aenar are blind." Heat rose to her face. She had actually forgotten for a moment that Hemmer himself was blind.
" They're beautiful," she murmured softly, fascinated as she continued to run her fingers tentatively over the patterns of his skin. "You are beautiful." Hemmer left it uncommented, but closed his eyes and his antennae followed her movements.
"Do they mean anything?" He nodded slightly and guided her hand to his upper right arm, where a ring wrapped around his bicep. "Every male Aenar gets a tattoo like this when he comes of age. It's a symbol that we're old enough to serve our people and contribute."
Next, he went to some lines that snaked down his neck to his shoulder blades. To reach them, she had to lean so close to him that his hot breath brushed her face. "These lines symbolise my connection to my family. Can you feel the corners where they end?" She breathed in agreement. "Each of those corners represents a member of my family." There were five in total.
Next, their hands travelled together to his thighs. "These tattoos symbolise the balance of our society, our harmony with nature. The Aenar must live in tune with their environment and learn to live with it to prevent the deadly cold from overtaking them. They humble us, in a good way, and remind us of our place in this world, this universe."
Finally, Hemmer brought her hand to his chest, where the lines formed an intricate pattern that she could not describe in words. "These represent my devotion to healing, to repairing. They are not mandatory among the Aenar, but this pattern represents our pacifist representations. They visualise my duty, my morals, my life."
He did not guide her hand further, but did not release it, so that her hands, covered by his, rested on his chest. Her gaze fell on his left forearm, which was the only part of his body, with the exception of his face, that was completely free.
"And what about here? Is there a reason why there are no tattoos here? Or is it some kind of cultural ban on having them there?" Hemmer shook his head, chuckling softly, and carefully clasped his hands with hers, causing her breath to hitch.
"It's not a cultural taboo to have tattoos there, quite the opposite. The tattoos there represent the family you have established. After the wedding, a band of blue colour is applied below the elbow, decorated with small ornaments. For each child born from this marriage, another band is added."
Fascinated, she looked at his arm and, releasing her left hand from his, ran it over his skin, where a marriage bond would probably be visible in the future. "And what if you get divorced? Are these tattoos reversible?"
"No." Hemmer took her hand in his again and traced invisible patterns on the back of her hand. "However, divorces are very, very rare for us. We choose our partners with great care, nothing less than perfect comes into question."
She slowly raised her eyes and released her hands to continue tracing the patterns on his skin. "So, has anyone caught your eye yet?"
A hint of a smile appeared on his lips and he carefully lifted his hand to brush a wet strand of hair that was stuck to her face behind her ear, where it remained against her cheek.  "Maybe."

OK, I'm most likely never going to do anything with the idea, but it's been swimming around in my head for the past three days, and I need to Let It Out.
Star Trek (TOS) and the Aubreyad would be a hilarious crossover. I don't really care how it happens, it could be that the Enterprise gets once again flung back in time due to shenanigans, or it could be that the Aubreyad takes place on a planet like the Gangster Planet or something that's just weirdly parallel to Earth history. But y'all, it would rock! So much camp! So much style! Details below
Can you imagine Kirk, Spock, and Bones aboard the Sophie? It would be so funny. Kirk trying not to let on that he's a captain of a very different kind of ship ("Yes, my ship is a very fine vessel, first rate" Kirk says, sweating. "Oh, a first rate? Well done sir, I wish you joy of her!" says Aubrey, should it ever come up). Spock trying to keep the ears hidden (and in the possible circumstance in which he gets injured, Stephen's extreme curiosity about the green blood). Bones trying not to scream about the state of 19th century medicine. I really can't decide whether Stephen would get on better with Spock or Bones, I think he would be friends with both but in very different directions (he's friends with Spock in an identically autistic science and music way, and friends with Bones about medicine and also about not being quite sure what all these naval types are up to). Spock would probably be having exceedingly restrained excitement about getting to see extinct Earth species. The three of them are all having a difficult time because the accent they speak with hasn't been invented yet (Bones is probably the closest to passing, ironically, because Southern USAmerican English is relatively close to what was being used in England at the turn of the 19th century. This is hilarious, to me).
And the other members of the Enterprise crew would also be having a fantastic time, given the opportunity. If Scotty is there, then he's probably having a fantastic time looking at how you run a square-rigged ship. If Chekov's there he's probably claiming that Russia invented everything aboard and a few things that haven't been invented yet. If Sulu is there, then you know that he's going to be losing his entire mind over the cannons, and he's probably giddily excited about a chance to use a sextant.
Uhura, Rand, and Chapel would have a harder time, given that women were generally unwelcome on Royal Navy ships. But we could possibly have a scenario where they end up on Minorca or something and have to do Society Lady stuff. Uhura's harp skills could well endear her to Molly Hart, and Molly seems to be the person you need to know in order to Get Stuff Done on the island. There's also the possibility that you end up in a scenario where Chapel ends up doing some lifesaving and then the ladies need to do some very fast talking in order to escape suspicion. And I get the feeling that Rand is the sort of lady to be able to work her way into any kind of administrative hierarchy she needs to in order to get the job done, whatever the job at hand might be (and she also seems the sort to read enough romance novels that she'd have 19th century speech patterns already living in her brain. Tell me that Rand doesn't have Pride and Prejudice memorized. You can't tell me that with a straight face, you know that she would).
In conclusion, the crews of my two favorite ships need to be friends :).

Star Trek TOS S01E17: Shore Leave
Tumblr media
Original Thoughts
"…okay I knew from fandom osmosis that ST got weird at times, especially in Season 3… but WHAT DID I JUST WATCH?! That was… weird. Not necessarily bad, but weeeeird. I guess it was an attempt to be more comedic and considering that they look like they filmed in a park, save budget. I really can’t give an opinion on this one because I honestly cannot figure out what my opinion is for this one. It’s bizarre but harmless and I’m having a hard time deciding if I liked it or not. Spock more or less tricking Kirk into shore leave was funny though and the idea of a planet that essentially creates your daydreams is interesting, haha. The fist-fight at the end was also fun, so there are some enjoyable aspects if the bizarreness turns you off."
Rewatch Thoughts
Why was past me so anti-fun?! This episode is great!
Ah man, where do I even begin with this one? This episode is ridiculous and cheap... and I love it! You can tell that they filmed most of this in some local park and outright stuck someone in a cheap bunny costume. Yet it doesn't distract from the experience at all, if anything it adds to the bizarreness of it all. It's a chance to let everyone be stupid for a little while and sometimes you need those kinds of episodes. You need to be silly and fun and let the audience have fun too. I kind of feel like we've forgotten that as of late and it needs to change.
As I have gone in production order for this watch, I think that this was well-timed for me. We've had several serious, dramatic episodes in a row such as Conscience of the King, Galileo Seven, and two court martial episodes (well three since The Menagerie is a two-parter). I was kind of glad to get back around to this one when I did. The rabbit, Finnegan, and all the other crazy illusions that pop up make the episode pure chaos. And to think all of this could have been avoided if the planet inhabitants had just left a freakin' sign up or something.
Kirk is an absolute delight here. The guy is stressed and overworked, all of which he brought onto himself but doesn't want a break. Why? Because the Enterprise is full of workaholics. The scene where Spock tricks Kirk into ordering himself to take Shore Leave is one of the freakin' greatest Trek scenes ever. There is NO WAY that I can ever be convinced that Spock and McCoy did NOT plan on pulling this stunt. McCoy knows that Kirk is a stubborn ass and likely wouldn't listen to him, so giving Spock his log entry and Spock baiting Kirk into giving himself the order? Perfection.
Not that Kirk gets a relaxing time... well for the most part. The guy gets annoyed by an old Academy bully (twice), his best friend gets 'killed', and one bad illusion pops up after the other. Even when he's on break he can't catch a break. At least he gets to imagine an old crush of his cause he gets distracted by flowers? Hooray? Okay, that was kinda cute how he was all 'where the Hell is Sulu... oh hey, a flower!'. Never change Jim. Plus he gets to beat the shit out of Finnegan and get his shirt ripped... again. IDK why he even bothers with a shirt, it's just gonna get ripped to shreds.
Though as much as I love Jim here, McCoy is the highlight for me. Yes I realize that this being me that's not saying much, but every scene of his is pure gold. There's the whole Alice in Wonderland scene, then him calling Jim to tell him that he's possibly lost his mind ever so calmly. His flirting with Barrows is cute as is him encouraging her to play princess if she wants to. IDK, he's just kind of endearingly adorable in this one? Mind you he also seemed to have forgotten his brain cells considering he decided to not get out of the way of the knight and got stabbed for his troubles. I blame the rabbit, it broke his brain. But yeah he's so lucky the caretaker managed to fix him. Look, we often see McCoy all grumpy and dealing with everyone's problems, seeing him all relaxed is a nice change of pace!
Not much to say about Spock outside the 'trick Kirk into Shore Leave' scene. I kind of wish we had Jim and Bones yank him into it with them cause Vulcan or not he needs to have at least one. But I supposed that wasn't meant to be. I almost feel like he could have been kept on the ship the whole episode and it wouldn't have really hanged much, but I guess since Nimoy has a Starring credit and is the popular one they gotta include him. Also at the end when the Chorus Girl goes up to him and he seems to have no idea how to react, poor guy. No wonder he prefers to stay on the ship XD
There are so many good moments. Sulu and his glee for guns, Barrows in the princess dress, McCoy and Barrows flirting, it's 40 minutes of ridiculousness and I love it. It's nice to see these characters able to let loose and have fun since thus far it's not a side we've gotten to see much of... well at least by choice. We even got a bit of a feelsy scene when McCoy got 'killed'. Kirk looks like he's on the verge of crying and sounds about ready to beat the shit out of the caretaker until McCoy pops back up alive and well. Even Spock is at a loss and this is around the time that their relationship becomes more argumentative. But that scene aside it's a fun episode.
So a planet where whatever you think of can be created... why did anyone think that this was a good idea? Why did no one think of having a sign or a greeter or something to inform anyone who showed up how the planet worked? Why did they wait so long to clear everything up? Did no one think 'hey maybe this is a bad idea since someone could think up so and so and get someone hurt or worst'. IDC if they have machines that can bring someone back from the verge of death, that won't do shit if someone is legit dead (I refuse to believe that McCoy was dead-dead, none of these people checked his pulse properly and I'll die on that hill.). I have SO many questions on why NO ONE thought through any of this. Maybe the Enterprise crew ended up being the trial run... that's not a bad theory actually. That is now my headcanon!
Not sure if Kirk letting everyone go on the planet was a wise move at the end, but ah well. He gets to have his time with his old crush and actually gets the break that Spock and McCoy wanted him to take. Kind of nice to see him all relaxed considering how tense he was at the start. OH the massage scene! How could I forget the massage scene at the start? Now most everyone knows I'm not a Spirk shipper... but that scene and a few during the climax sure have plenty fo context even I can't ignore haha.
Wow, kind of surprised I managed to make the review this long. I figured I wouldn't have a lot to talk about given the nature of the episode... and I was wrong. But this episode is plain fun. The first time I watched it, I think that I was so taken aback despite knowing that this was one of the weirder episodes that I was unsure of how to feel. Three years later, I can now safely say that it was a delight! The characters are fantastic, the plot is chaotic in the best way, and the cheapness only adds to the fun. You don't always need fancy sets or a million-dollar budget to make a good episode, and this is a really good example of saving on budget but still making something enjoyable. It's not my favorite cause I like me my feelsy plots, but I still had a fun time revisiting this. I highly recommend this one especially if you need something to lift your spirits, it sure lifted mine~

so we finished watching season 2 of Picard last night, and just. whew, friends, what? a truly baffling array of choices. things i simply cannot get over:
the commitment to doing every Single joke from The Voyage Home while simultaneously Strenuously Avoiding doing anything campy or goofy
like, the reason TVH works is that the main cast are all just Buffoons — Kirk does not know how money works, Spock is dressed as a jogger in a bathrobe, Scottie tries to talk into a computer mouse, and it is all GREAT. in Picard S2, it's like, they say they don't know much about this period in history, but they all seem to click into place fairly seamlessly. in general watching this new era of Trek, it feels like the writers have simply forgotten the pleasure of a good silly camp romp, and constantly referencing one of the best silliest campiest romps in the canon is uh, not helping
the climax of the season revolves around?? Q's character development??? Q???? QUEUE?????? baffling
in general what was even Q's plan here. is he . . . trying to sabotage the Europa mission or not? why is All Of This necessary for Picard to forgive himself, if that's Q's real goal? just like generally this framing does not make sense to me and so resting the entire season on it is. a choice, i guess
also when have we ever been asked to care about Q's interiority before, when have we ever been asked to be On His Side as opposed to whatever human he's fucking with
how are we relating to canon here. h o w. there are some Real deep cuts, but then also some like, fairly prominent episodes that are just?? ignored???
like, ok:
Guinan and Picard have a fairly significant adventure together in 1800s San Francisco (in “Time’s Arrow”). it is canon then that she doesn't know Picard yet. this is an incident she will remember for 500+ years and reference on board the Enterprise D. but in this season of Picard, she appears not to know him at all and to once more be meeting him for the first time. these two first meetings are . . . difficult to reconcile
but we are apparently doubling down on “Wesley Crusher was just the super specialest boy and he managed to transcend the limits of physical reality because of his big special brain”
we are apparently pretending that Robert Picard just . . . doesn't exist? isn't around for Jean-Luc's childhood? this isn't really technically a continuity error but Robert and Jean-Luc's relationship felt real and specific and grounded in the particulars of their two characters whereas Yvette just feels like generic sexist “ooooooh his mother was ~crazy~” schlock, and losing the former for the latter is uh. not an improvement
we're doubling down on Gary Seven, tho! Gary fucking Seven!!!!! remember that beloved character from an episode that was definitely a good idea??? why
actually, specifically, tho: it feels like this is a continuation of Star Trek’s reluctance/inability to grapple with the less savory parts of Gene Roddenberry as a human being, particularly his misogyny. to stick only to the example at hand, he made the “Assignment: Earth” filming experience so miserable for Teri Garr (by, for example, relentlessly shortening the length of her skirt, even over the objections of the costume designer) that Garr has absolutely refused to talk about Star Trek in subsequent interviews. i was obviously not on set, but the vibe i get is extremely that filming that episode would clearly and unambiguously been a hostile workplace environment by contemporary standards of sexual harassment. so i, personally, have a hard time being like “ah yes, ‘Assignment: Earth’, what a fun bit of forgotten canon to incorporate wholesale into our new series without grappling with the specifics of its creation in any way!”. the vibes are just . . . rancid
anyway, moving on from continuity gripes,
it feels like a real missed opportunity to have not cast David Duchovny as the FBI agent. this is really not the showrunners’ fault, but i’m in a hating sort of mood, so i’m going to take off points anyway
“Dark Page” was not a great idea in 1993 and it isn’t any better now
circling back to “covering the hits without any understanding of what made them good”, Raffi’s encounter in a camp of unhoused people feels like a nod to “Past Tense” without any willingness to actually . . . engage with what “Past Tense” was saying. for all that i have some issues with some of its narrative choices, “Past Tense” devotes significant, sustained screen time to characters that society has decided to discard and is relentless in hammering home the message that “this is not just and it cannot be reformed into justness”. here, Raffi stumbles across an encampment, someone immediately tries to mug her at gun point, she beats him up, she shares a rueful quip about “gosh, wild that such a prosperous society can’t be assed to take care of people”, and then we just move on and never mention this again. like, we get Words saying that Homelessness Bad, but what we are shown is “unhoused people are scary and dangerous and it’s ok for our heroes to beat them up”
(i actually think that In General there is a lot of wasted potential with Raffi, altho mostly the fault here lies in season 1. “very competent Starfleet officer who is also dealing with paranoid delusions and falling apart at the seams about it” is an interesting premise for a Star Trek character if done well! and then S1 is just like “oh, nope, actually, she was right about everything, there was a massive, bizarre conspiracy that did exactly what she thought they did, she's fine and correct and everyone who ever doubted her is an ass”)
(i also think that the “love always ends in grief” sequence from Discovery S4, for all of that season’s considerable messiness, is a much tighter and more powerful expression of that theme than the wandering, haphazard approach to it here. i think these shows are meant to be watched in concert, but the back-to-back seldom does Picard any favors)
we continue to lean into Human Exceptionalism and i continue to roll around on the floor going “ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh” about it
more elaborate thoughts on that go in my “if i were making Enterprise” post, tho
THAT SAID
on the topic of exceptionalism, i hate the FUCK out of the bit in Crusher’s recruitment speech where he’s like “do you want to be ordinary, or do you want your life to have purpose and meaning?” as tho???? ordinary lives????? cannot have purpose and meaning???????????? look me in the eyes, writers. no, no, look me Directly in the eyes: fuck you, fuck that, i am doing cartoon violence to you. the mindset that only extraordinary lives are worth living is toxic bullshit that distorts so much of our mental, political, and artistic landscape. ordinary lives can have so much meaning and purpose, they can be so very beautiful and rich. ordinary lives can be very good to live. i think Star Trek, in general, focuses too much on elites as The Only People Who Really Matter, but to elevate that to the level of explicit text is just. fucking devastating. unspeakably bleak. absolute philosophical train wreck of a season finale, on a par with Discovery’s “a Starfleet admiral actively and deliberately planned and tried to carry out a genocide and faced zero career repercussions for it that we can see”. clown car nonsense
in conclusion: i have drunk the haterade, g-d this season sucked, i can’t wait to make April 13 “Jurati eating car batteries day” and take it away from the Homestucks

Character Spotlight: Hikaru Sulu
By Ames
Tumblr media
Have at thee! Pick up your foil and get into the proper stance as A Star to Steer Her By shines this week’s character spotlight on the Enterprise’s helmsman (and occasional musketeer), Hikaru Sulu. We may have had to get a little nitpicky with noteworthy moments from Scott last week because he’s just used less than the three main characters, and Sulu will be even tougher because he does even less and then is gone for a lot of season two while he was off filming The Green Berets (which I wouldn’t even recommend, so that’s a waste!).
That’s not to say Sulu isn’t a great presence in The Original Series, and we came up with some great (and not so great) moments from this ship’s jack of all trades. He swashbuckles, he collects pistols, he tends to plants, he quips with his Russian bestie. Check out the best and worst of Sulu below, listen to this week’s banter on the podcast (discussion starts at 1:19:43), and give us warp speed on my mark. Mark!

Best Moments
Tumblr media
Someone give this man a hand… plant Sulu started the series with a passion for botany that never really came up much after it was established in “The Man Trap” (even when it would have been applicable, as you’ll see), but it was endearing to see him caring for Beauregard and worrying about his flowery friend after a salt vampire masquerading as crewman Green gave him a fright. There there, Beauregard.
Tumblr media
Richelieu, beware! One of the most memorable moments for Sulu and also for the whole damn series comes in “The Naked Time” where we see our favorite helmsman get affected by the space madness disease and start running around the ship shirtless with a foil, provoking crewmen into duels. It’s that bonkers kind of fun episode that really worked for TOS and gave us decades of referential humor after.
Tumblr media
Lower us down a pot of hot coffee While we gave Kirk a lot of guff about his characterization(s) in “The Enemy Within,” we’ve really got to give Sulu credit for his work in the B plot. While slowly freezing on Alfa 177, he manages to keep morale up with the occasional light-hearted room service call to the Enterprise. And this is the first we see of what we dubbed the “Sulu Maneuver,” when you heat up some rocks with a phaser! Clever!
Tumblr media
He’s doing a countdown! Okay, this one’s here partly because of the running joke we made out of Bailey’s delivery pointing out Sulu’s rather macabre countdown, but Sulu also displays some serious chops in “The Corbomite Maneuver.” Bailey can’t handle the pressure, and Sulu has to literally lean over and do his job for him at the same time, all without losing count!
Tumblr media
You are not of the body Mind-controlled Sulu is best Sulu and gets some really fun acting out of George Takei every time. We see it in the afore-mentioned “The Naked Time,” in “Catspaw,” and in “This Side of Paradise,” to name a few, but my favorite mind-controlled Sulu has got to be in “The Return of the Archons” because of all the extra points he gets for this ruffly outfit!
Tumblr media
It’s Greek to me Let’s also commend Sulu for rigging up the ship’s phasers to destroy Apollo’s temple in “Who Mourns for Adonais?” Why this plan worked I have absolutely no idea. What self-respected god entity puts all of their powers in a single object? Trelane wouldn’t gaff this hard. Anyway, props to Sulu for somehow avoiding phasering the humans who were hiding only ten feet away like fools.
Tumblr media
Lay back and thinking about vegetables Holy cow, guys. A whole episode in which only Spock, Uhura, and Sulu are featured from the entire cast? It must be “The Slaver Weapon” from The Animated Series. Only TAS could get away with giving to Sulu scenes that would go to Kirk any other day, and he owns it! He outwits the Kzinti. He avoids their telepathy by thinking about broccoli. He does it all!
Tumblr media
Don’t call me tiny As usual, some of the best moments we’ve collected come from the films, where the characters all really get the shine. Even the minor characters like Sulu, who gets to sashay around in what we previously dubbed the Ta’cape in The Search for Spock and hold his own against a security officer who stands probably a full foot taller than him, like a small dog in a fight. Bowwow!
Tumblr media
Special delivery While we’re a little sad that Sulu had probably the fewest character scenes in The Voyage Home (they evidently cut a family reunion scene due to bad child acting), we do have to thank this San Franciscan for obtaining and flying a helicopter around to deliver the transparent aluminum to the ship. How did he pull it off? We’ll just have to use our imagination.
Tumblr media
Emergency Landing Plan B Wow, we’ve had more good moments from The Final Frontier than bad ones to mention in these character spotlight posts, which is kind of fascinating considering that film on the whole is among our least favorites. But when Sulu totally rocks it and manually lands the shuttle in the bay using a barricade, we have to admit that the film knew how to use its characters.
Tumblr media
Fly her apart then! How often does Sulu get to save the day? Not often enough, I say, because when he gets the opportunity to have the Excelsior join in the battle in The Undiscovered Country, it’s positively thrilling. Your heart just wells at the love these crewmembers have for each other that Sulu would ignore orders to come rescue his friends with passion that I wish we got to see more often in the show.
Tumblr media
Tossing a match into a pool of gasoline For the 30th anniversary of Star Trek, Voyager treated the fans with a little Sulu action in “Flashback” and he proved to be just as heroic as ever! Not only do we get to see his decision to go save his old crewmates, but we see him outwit Kang by igniting the sirillium in a nebula. Not only that, but he does the humane and diplomatic thing and makes sure it won’t destroy the Klingon ship utterly. Now that’s a great birthday gift!
Worst Moments
Tumblr media
It’s a he plant – a girl can tell Ya know how we were lauding Sulu for all his great botany work before? Well, he insists that Beauregard’s name is Gertrude for some reason in “The Man Trap.” Dude, just let Janice name him Beauregard if she wants to. He’s her plant, you just feed him sometimes. And frankly, Beauregard is the perfect name for this plant, so we have to give you points off for this one.
Tumblr media
I’ll protect you, fair maiden Another instance that’s on both our good and bad lists comes in “The Naked Time.” Drunk or not, assaulting his coworkers is not okay, pal. And Uhura can defend herself from the likes of Richelieu or whoever else. Can we do away with the constant need to protect female characters like they’re damsels in distress? Luckily, Uhura managed to own this moment, as we’ll certainly see next week.
Tumblr media
I knew he would Here’s another example of Chris putting the same moment in both of his lists. Funny as that interaction with Bailey was, did we really need the countdown in “The Corbomite Maneuver”? Balok was already doing it for us, as we could tell when the Clint Howard–shaped alien was supposed to repeat “one minute” after Sulu, but the line was cut, and Sulu reacts to it anyway like a weirdo.
Tumblr media
Fantasy island, er, planet Most things in “Shore Leave” are perplexing since the episode was being written on the fly and all the characters are acting entirely out of character (we postulated the whole planet was drugged, but who knows). So when Sulu is evidently thinking about samurai for some reason, we can just blame the writers if that comes across as a little racist, especially considering Takei fought to NOT be written as a samurai in “The Naked Time.”
Tumblr media
If it were two feet from me You know how we were giving credit earlier to Sulu for caring for Beauregard and having a knack for botany? Well all that goes out the window in “This Side of Paradise” where Sulu suddenly can’t notice a plant that is literally right next to him and slowly turning to face him. I call this man’s botany skills into question. No wonder he misgendered Beauregard!
Tumblr media
You are away from your post, Mister We can give normal universe Sulu a pass on this one, but his parallel universe self in “Mirror, Mirror” is just a monster. While it’s some good fun to watch Takei got down with his bad self by trying to get the captain killed and all that jazz, it is just plain uncomfortable to watch him terrorizing Uhura, so it’s definitely worth a place on our list.
Tumblr media
A literal dagger of the mind In “And the Children Shall Lead,” it’s unclear how far the mental powers of Gorgan go since sometimes the crew only hallucinates things and sometimes they are straight-up mind controlled. Sulu seeing a ton of knives in space (which is just plain impossible and he should know it) is the weirdest instance yet. Kirk has to tell him what he sees isn’t there, but does he understand that? Who knows; it’s a nonsensical episode.
Tumblr media
I am for you, Sulu This is just a little moment, but Sulu falls (literally!) for one of the oldest cliches in horror writing: When Losira is coming for him in “That Which Survives,” Sulu backs away and trips on some rocks like a chump, leaving himself prone to her attack. And what makes even less sense is that her touching him doesn’t kill him like the others; it only disrupts the cells in his shoulder. Like a chump.
Tumblr media
It’s Walter backwards! More of Sulu getting made to look like a chump comes in The Animated Series episode “The Infinite Vulcan” when he nearly gets himself killed after getting bitten by a retlaw: a walking planet with poisonous bite. Luckily, he gets saved by the Phylosians, but you’d think a botanist like Sulu would know better. Oh wait, I’ve already questioned his botany skills, so there’s that.
Tumblr media
You’re a wizard, Sulu! I can’t rant enough on what a trainwreck “The Magicks of Megas-Tu” is, but here’s a taste. To test out how to use magic (not even going to start; we’ll be here all day), Sulu’s first impulse is to make himself a pretty woman and then go in to kiss her. In front of everyone. What the hell, Sulu? I expected better from you, man, but making yourself a sex doll is utterly ridiculous.
Tumblr media
One tiny step for a tiny man One more from The Animated Series, and this one’s stupidity is compounded by the super inconsistent animation. When he’s been shrunk in “The Terratin Incident” to somewhere between one foot and one inch tall depending on the art frame, Sulu goes to turn a dial, somehow trips on it, and falls off the equivalent of a ten-story building only to break a leg. Ugh.
Tumblr media
Like a bull in a China ship I have to give Sulu grief about something that bugs me whenever I see it in Star Trek. Did you ever notice that the crew seem to use breakable items only so they can get smashed? In any other scene, the ceramic tea cup that we see in The Undiscovered Country might be metal or plastic or the paper cups we saw at one point, but because we need to see it break, it’s ceramic, and I slowly lose my mind about it.
Oh my. We’re reducing to impulse speed to prepare for more of these character spotlights, so keep your eyes here for more in the series! Also, keep up with our watchthrough of Enterprise over on SoundCloud or wherever you podcast, challenge us to a duel over on Facebook or Twitter, and take a moment to smell the flowers, if you take a half a second to notice them.

I need to stop making Vulcans more and more cat-like but it’s impossible.
i keep adding this shit to my personal k/s things and…
like…
obviously some of these are ones that have been in fanon for a while
but…
here’s ideas i’ve just kept for a while:
They purr. Since it’s caused by pleasurable emotions, usually they have to be pretty worked up, but purring is a thing Vulcans naturally do. (Romulans also purr, so says I, due to their shared ancestry). Spock has gotten more comfortable with it over time, as he has with other more emotional things, and he gets “bubbly” sometimes when he’s content and will let out the occasional rumble among friends.
Vulcans also rub. similar to the purring, it is an emotional reaction and is clearly not an “in public act” but they sometimes headbut and rub their faces on their partner.
this isn’t really a cat thing but on the themes of affection, Since Vulcans “kiss” with their hands, but that isn’t necessarily how they engage in sexual intercourse, (because the Saavik thing is in search for spock is so weird… for my own sanity i just see it as like, her calming down the ponn farr? so that spock doesn’t die as a 7 year old on Genesis??) i believe they wouldn’t naturally kiss on the lips like humans do. (just think: kirk gives spock a very human peck on the lips and spock does not innately know how to kiss back so he just presses his lips against Jim. and jim is just :O because it’s so cute. but spock is much more comfortable using his hands to show affection.)
anyway, there you go.

Can i request: Chris catching Spock and La'an on a date and trailing them. They realize someone is following them so they ask reader to help distract Chris so they can get away. Chris ends up being genuinly smitten by the reader and they spend a nice evening together at a bar and the reader admitting why they actually met but it's ok because Chris doesn't mind (even though Spock and La'an will get an earful later)🤗
Hope you like it!
Being a distraction intended for Chris would include:
Tumblr media
•Chris, bless him, has been not so subtly trailing Spock and La’an ever since he saw them feeding each other breakfast three days ago at the start of shoreleave.
•he’d donned all manner of poor disguises- the latest of which was a terrible fake moustache that had fallen into his coffee cup as he sneezed.
•and the new couple, Spock and La’an had found the moment utterly comical! But they didn’t want Chris trailing them anymore…but they also didn’t want to call him out for his curiosity. So instead they came up with an idea.
(•or rather, La’an did. And Spock went along with it.)
•it’s an open secret among your friends (Christine, Nyota, Una and La’an) that you have a huge crush on Chris- but that the man had no idea. And when La’an spotted you drinking alone at the bar, she knew what to do.
•you were more than happy to be a distraction as her and Spock left the bar. Even though you were insanely nervous to just go up to Chris, for La’an you’d do it- on the provision that you get lots of juicy details about her and Spock at your next girls night. (She agreed- much to Spock’s horror.)
•so you found yourself sitting at Chris’s table, placing one ‘Sex on the Beach’ drink in front of him and one in front of yourself. He gives you a quizzical look, which swiftly morphs into a smile.
•Chris is instantly smitten- in your own clothes, buzzed a tiny bit by some cocktails and smiling, you were a different person to your straight laced career driven self (but naturally Chris admires your professionalism).
•you start the chat by laughing at his poor disguise. You joke about how even a fake moustache couldn’t hide the magnificent Captain, he’s far too debonair and handsome to hide.
•Chris is immediately flattered. The conversation gets off to a flying start, flirting and laughter filling the space between you! (You can hardly believe it! It’s a dream come true!) But in no time at all Chris has totally forgotten about Spock and La’an, and they’ve sneaked away- La’an discreetly shooting you a little wink as you caught her eye.
•it takes Chris hours to realise the two he was trailing are gone. In fact it’s sunset before he even looks around, and the two of you have shared more than one drink together. But he bashfully confessed he’s really enjoyed himself- that everything has felt so natural! It’s been like nothing else ever before- a connection between minds, hearts, souls. It was perfection, recognition, hope.
•you agree. But you can’t have this going further without telling him the truth. You blurt out that you’d come to distract him so Spock and La’an could leave, but that you’d stayed longer because he was a great guy and you loved talking to him and you like how easy it is to talk to him and-
•Chris cut you off there, laughing. He took hold of your hand and squeezed it gently. He feels the same- and he kind of figured you were a distraction, but he didn’t mind being distracted…
•as Chris took you out to a restaurant for some dinner you both had to concede- it had all turned out very well indeed!

Against All Odds
Part 513
McCoy
McCoy frowned as Christine reentered the lounge alone. She and Scotty had left together to make the appointment. She made her way over to sit with Uhura watching the billiards game. He turned his eyes back to the door and waited.
“Excuse me a minute,” he mumbled to Jaylah and got up.
Christine must have seen his moving towards her from the corner of her eye, for she turned to face him before he got to her.
“He’s alright,” she said before he could open his mouth.
“The appointment?”
“It’s for Friday after lunch in your room.”
McCoy frowned. “Are girls even allowed in our dorm?”
Christine laughed. “On occasion; for good reasons.”
“So where is—”
“Scotty said he wanted to lie down for a bit before dinner. Last night really took it out of him, huh?”
He nodded. His mind drifted, wondering how comfortable Scotty would be in the room by himself. After all, until that morning Scotty had always been a guest to McCoy’s room.
“Thanks Chris,” he smiled at her.
“Always.”
He returned to the table with Jaylah.
“I finished Just Leonard!” Jaylah grinned at him.
“Good,” he smiled. “Let me see.”
Jaylah handed the PADD to him and he read through her last answers. He smiled brighter at her as he handed the device back.
“They’re all perfect.”
Jaylah stood and hugged him.
“Thank you for the help.”
“No problem. I’ll see you later, alright?”
“Go find Montgomery Scotty,” Jaylah looked at him slyly and he couldn’t help but laugh. He gave her a wave over his shoulder and left the lounge.
A guard was standing outside the door as he reached his room.
“Your highness.”
McCoy nodded and opened the door. Scotty was lying in the bed that had been Spock’s. He turned to look over his shoulder at the noise of the door opening.
“Hey darlin’,” McCoy called softly. “Doing alright?”
He saw Scotty shrug against the bed in answer.
“You want some company?” McCoy moved in and sat on the edge of his own bed.
“Aye.”
McCoy leaned down to undo his shoes, then moved over to Scotty on the other bed. His fiancé shifted to make room. McCoy settled with an arm around Scotty.
“Dr. Hudson will see us Friday at lunch,” Scotty said quietly.
“In here,” McCoy added. “Chris told me. I- I’m glad we’re doing it. It’ll be good for both of us.” He squeezed his arm around Scotty, and felt the nod against his chest.
“It’ll be alright leannan. It’ll hurt but we’ll be better in the end.”
“I know love.”
Silence fell between them, and McCoy just enjoyed getting to have Scotty with him, knowing the other boy wouldn’t have to get up and leave at a set time.
“I was thinking,” McCoy started, “that maybe Robbie’s idea of shoving your bed and his together wouldn’t be such a bad idea in here…”
“What if they just split in the middle and we fell?” Scotty asked. McCoy heard a hint of humor in his fiancé’s voice and felt a wave of relief.
“Then the guards would come in and pick us up.” McCoy grinned.
“No thank ye,” Scotty said. “Knowing you, you’d likely be bare somewhere ye wouldn’t want them to see.”
“Hey!” McCoy chuckled. “That’s not true! But maybe I’ll have to start just to spite you for that.” He turned to look at Scotty’s face as he grinned again. Scotty was finally smiling.
“For real though, do you think we could figure out a way to push them together and make them stay?” McCoy knew Scotty would be able to solve the problem.
“I’ll think on it mo ghràdh. I- I just want to relax for a bit.”
“I know. You sleep if you want. I’ll be here.” He ran a hand through Scotty’s hair.
Part 514
Scotty
The first week back at school flew by. Their friends made sure that Scotty and Leonard quickly got back into their normal school life again.
The classes and regular wake-up and meal times also helped a lot.
During the day, Scotty was mostly distracted by everyday tasks, but at night, the fears and worries came. But the pills and Leonard's closeness offered Scotty a sense of security and provided comfort and safety.
However, when Friday came and Scotty walked to their room with Leonard and Christine, his heart raced.
How would the conversation go? What would Dr. Hudson ask and say? What was he going to answer?
They entered the room and Scotty looked around searchingly, not sure where to sit.
"Come here."
Leonard grabbed his hand and led him over to his bed. He sat down, pulling Scotty with him.
Leonard's bed.
A safe and secure place. A place of refuge. It was a good choice.
They hadn't managed to convert the beds to one yet, but mostly they slept in Leonard's bed.
Christine walked over to Scotty's desk and took a seat in the chair that went with it.
"I'll be here all the time, but... I'll stay out of it a little bit, okay?"
Scotty nodded slowly. It was all right with him.
About five minutes later, there was a knock at the door.
Scotty wanted to get up, but Christine beat him to it. She opened the door and let Dr. Hudson enter.
"Hello you three," the psychologist greeted the students with a gentle smile.
"Hello Dr. Hudson."
Leonard stood up and extended his hand to the lady.
"We haven't really met yet. Nice to meet you."
Dr. Hudson shook hands and nodded.
"Nice to meet you as well, Leonard. It's all right if I say Leonard, isn't it?"
"By all means. I'd like that."
Leonard sat back down and Dr. Hudson looked around.
"Where may I sit?" she asked, and Scotty looked toward Leonard's desk, which was nearby.
Dr. Hudson pointed to the chair.
"Over there?"
"Where ever you want," Leonard replied, and Dr. Hudson took a seat in the chair.
She pulled out her PADD for notes.
"So, how can I help you?"
Scotty swallowed.
"It's... it's really more about me. Leonard... Leonard actually handles everything very well."
And Scotty admired him greatly for it. The Scotsman had only seen Leonard plagued by panic attacks or nightmares once or twice at most.
He was like a steady rock to Scotty. He was a place of safety.
"Is that so, Leonard?"
Dr. Hudson's eyes fell on Leonard, who had grabbed Scotty's hand and was squeezing it gently.
"I... yes. It's not like I was injured. And-"
Leonard fell silent when he saw Dr. Hudson's look. She said nothing, just looked at him questioningly.
"I also... didn't lose my home like Scotty."
Leonard held Scotty's hand even tighter. Something was not right. Scotty could see it clearly.
"You're looking for reasons, aren't you?"
Leonard narrowed his eyes in confusion when he heard Hudson's question.
"You're looking for reasons why it's not as bad for you as it is for Scotty. Reasons to be strong. But how do you feel, Leonard?"
Scotty saw that his fiancé was swallowing hard. His eyes were wide and... there were tears.

Una is NOT a Space Mom
Sorry if I’m annoying to everyone else but I'm really sick of so many fans trying to make every member of the Enterprise crew fit into the box of being Pike and Una's kids. It's really annoying and really demeaning to the whole ass adult characters who are exactly one rank below Una. Especially when Una never acts motherly to any member of the crew. Yes, Pike has pure dad energy in a lot of scenes, but I can think of maybe one scene where Una might be interpreted as being motherly, but it’s really not motherly because the scene I’m thinking of is the one where she talks to La’an about her being Illyrian. And that’s easily an argument that happens between friends. Una doesn’t give off mother energy to any of the crew, yet everyone is trying to force her to be a mom and match Pike’s dad energy.
It’s not the case at all with her character. She’s not motherly to M’Benga, they’re most likely the same age, nor to Hemmer or Spock. The women of the crew, she’s not that way with Chapel, and even though Uhura is a cadet on her ship, they don’t interact much and the one major time they did was so that Una could talk to her about finding a possible cure to the light disease. Ortegas and her probably have a minute of shared screen time between them before “The Elysian Kingdom” where the characters they played were exes (yes the “predatory lesbian trope” posts, we’ve all heard of them), but they don’t have a major interaction outside of that episode. So how does anyone get “Una is Ortegas’ mom” from the relationship we’ve never see on screen?
Now La’an and Una is where I think most people draw their “Una as Mom” ideas from. Since Una saved La’an when the Gorn sent her into space on a raft many might get the idea that La’an was a child when this happened, or that Una has a generational age difference with La’an. But we don’t actually know how old either of them were when this happened. Una had to be at minimum 20/21 since Starfleet Academy has a four year training program and the minimum age for a human to get in is 16 years (at least by the time TNG roles around). Now La’an could have easily been a child during this but in “Spock Amok” Una says that she can never picture La’an as a child. My guess is that La’an was at least a teenager (14-19) when she was rescued by Una. The thing is, we don’t know what happened in between that time. How much of a role Una played in La’an’s life after she rescued her. Could it have been motherly? It’s not off the table, but none of their other scenes together indicate that there’s no other interpretation of their relationship. It’s also easily interpreted that they have a bond that isn’t “mother/daughter” and was less familial. Does Una care about La’an and support her? Yes, but she doesn't need to be a mother figure in order to do that.
Am I saying every person is wrong for wanting Una in a motherly role? No, but the people who insist that it’s the only interpretation for her interactions with any member of the crew need to stop. Other people are reading different things with these characters that have only just begun to have grounds covered. You’re interpretation of Una’s relationships aren’t the only ones and you need to stop saying “gross” any time anyone has a different interpretation.
She’s not the actual mom to characters who are whole adults that can take care of themselves.

Twenty-two questions for twenty twenty-two (fanfic edition!)
Thank you @curator for sharing the questions! This was fun to think about.
1, Fandoms you wrote for this year?
Star Trek Strange New Worlds and The Librarians
2. Favorite fic you wrote this year?
the rage that is in my heart was the fic that reignited my imagination and hurled me into writing again after a four year dry spell, so it’s very special to me.
3. Favorite fic you read this year?
Thursday Night Cooking School by igrockspock Summary: Una had always said that Captain Pike was the best captain in the fleet; she’d never mentioned that he was the friendliest captain in the fleet. Or that he’d be obsessed with food, and getting La'an to eat it.
Fantastic fic about La'an and Pike's growing friendship in the aftermath of Una's arrest. The characterization is excellent and effortless. chef's kiss
4. Favorite opening line/scene you wrote this year?
The Librarians: Eve tucked a soft kiss below Flynn’s ear for safekeeping, and left him to his bubble pipe. (a touch of forgiveness)
SNW: Time is not immutable. It bends and breaks, dilates and contracts, spins out of control and in some cases stops completely. Time is but a perception, a tool used to quantify the experience of conscious thought, an inherently neutral concept. Illyrians were taught this from a young age.
And yet, ever since Valeo Beta V, Number One felt that time had turned against her. (the hand on the clock)
5. Favorite ending line/scene you wrote this year?
She touched the door frame, gentle reverence in her fingertips, before turning and leaving everything behind her for the second time in her life, for one last walk to the ready room. (the hand on the clock)
6. A trope you wrote this year?
Third party observes your OTP
7. Pairings you wrote this year?
Eve/Flynn Eve & LITs Pike/Una and Pike & Una Uhura/Ortegas Spock & Una Una & La’an La’an & Chapel
8. A fic regret from this year?
Feeling rushed to put out content and be “relevant” instead of enjoying the moment and the resurgence of creativity
9. A song that helped you write?
Bird Song by Juniper Vale
10. Total number of fics you posted?
Nine one shots (700+ words/per) Twenty-one drabbles (100 words/per)
11. Total number of words you posted?
14,154
12. Most popular fic written this year?
revelation in the light of gray
13. Least popular fic written this year?
neon
14. Longest completed fic you posted this year?
revelation in the light of gray
15. Shortest completed fic you posted this year?
I've been doing drabbles this year!
Trekalicious Drabbles SNW drabble collection Promotion NSFW SNW drabble We are the library The Librarians drabble collection
16. Favorite character to write about this year?
Toss up between Number One and Eve Baird
17. A fic you didn’t expect to write?
One Good Reason was a plot bunny out of left field that escaped from a conversation between friends. A La'an/Sam Kirk fic that is very much an AU and very silly.
18. Most memorable comment/review?
“# bro # this fic knocked me in the windpipe and then threw me a kitkat # i love it” from @myenterpriseisparked on boreal
I love these tags, especially because this was a drabble I was very unhappy with (and still kind of am tbh) but decided to post anyway to just kind of document my writing practice. It was nice to see people connecting with it anyway, even if I felt it wasn't quite right.
19. Trends you noticed in your writing this year?
Friendships have been very important in my writing this year
20. Fics you wanted to write but didn’t?
I had an epic fic about the day before Pike's accident and then immediate aftermath that I really wanted to write (and have written a bit of and do plan to write eventually) that just ended up being too exhausting to write this year.
I also have so many ideas for The Librarians but those fics aren't flowing as easy as the Strange New Worlds fics, so they're on the back burner for now.
21. Something you want to write next year?
I wrote a lot of friendship this year. I'd like to try writing more romance next year.
22. An idea from one of your fics that you want people to think about?
Una's arrest at the end of season one is going to be so not a big deal by this time next year, so let loose and have fun with fics set in the future!

🌸 Y'ALL CAN'T BE DOING THIS TO ME I-
🌸THANK YOU AUGH
Tumblr media
🌸It makes me feel so happy that you lot love my silly lil OC<3
🌸More below the cut, yes I am going to be a sap cause oh my gODS
🌸I've never really had success with OC blogs before, the fact that remotely anybody wants to interact and learn more like you all just
🌸Makes me happy! Please don't be scared to DM me or lemme know that you'd love to hear me ramble about her, I promise you
🌸I am filled with too many ideas and would love to spout out to someone!
🌸info dumping is my specialty especially since, even though I made her like-weeks ago, I got a whole lot to talk about
🌸AND THE FACT YOU GUYS LOVE SEEING HER INTERACTING AND ANY LIL THING
🌸KICKING AND CRYING AND SOBBING /POS
🌸thank you all so much I'm so glad to call you friends qwq
🌸 @starfleetsxvulcan you write Spock so amazingly- honestly one of the reasons I even wanted to make an OC for Star Trek in the first place and actually get more into the fandom that, admittedly, I thought was dead. I also love the friendship between Spock and Blue- definitely going to develop interestingly.
🌸@bcnes Y O U- You're also so amazing and cool, and I love how you RO McCoy. The dynamic between how stubborn vs how sweet the two are is so great. Really just opposites that can come in the middle and not get on each other's nerves.
🌸@finalfronticr Your Kirk and the way you write him is- so silly and so nice. The idea that despite being the commander he cares about his crew is something you capture perfectly- a character I can definitely see Jim being someone Blue could be able to confide in (aside from McCoy, believe it or not).
🌸@calmlythrilling YOUR VENOMOUS IS SO SPOT ON AND I LOVE HIM. Honestly it's been so long since I watched and enjoyed OK KO, but having Blue interact with one of my favorite villains from the show is. You are amazing. You write amazing! All aspects of him too!
🌸@teapottroubles Alice is so caring to Bluebird in her own way and I love the fact it feels like they've been friends for a while <3 you're writing is so amazing and Admittedly- I also think Blue would be good friends with Scotty! I love how you portray your characters and just- AUGHHH /pos
🌸thank you all so so much <3

2, 3, 17 and 40 for the ask game!
Thank you for the ask, friend!!!
2) talk about a notable time a narrative or character has looked you dead in the eyes and said “fuck your plan, here’s what we’re actually doing.”
Oh jeez, that could be almost all of my fics. They tend to keep growing and growing because the characters want to do more and more things, until a 500 word ficlet becomes a 12k multichap! The most notable, I think, is my destiel star trek fusion au, which started out as a quick oneshot to get the kirk/spock/dean/cas brainworms out of my head before last year's NaNoWriMo so that I could focus on my goal of finishing several WIPs I'd been working on for months. Instead of doing that, like I intended, I kept thinking of more and more ideas and plot points to add into the universe, and ended up with 13 total fic ideas, two fully written first drafts for them, plus a couple halves of other ones, and like. maybe a thousand words on one of the WIPs I'd intended on finishing. For the whole of NaNo. I think that's the problem with writing Dean and Cas, though - it's literally canon that they'll fight against the narrative the author sets them, even when I'm actively trying to get the two ungrateful bastards together /j
3) on a scale of 1-10 how much do you enjoy incorporating romance into the average story?
10, baby! I love writing romance. I do write stuff without romance (mostly in my original works), but I really enjoy writing romance in fics, which is all I've been writing lately.
17) what is your favorite line you’ve ever written?
"the world was thrown into a greyscale majesty, pierced with shadows that were darker than spilt ink."
Annoyingly, it's from a fic that I don't really want people to read anymore, and have only left up because a) it was my first ever fic (published 10 years ago!!!!) and b) it was a gift for my best friend at the time who I've since lost contact with, and I want her to be able to find it if she ever wants to (Ruby, if you still follow me on here, I miss you!). The phrase "a greyscale majesty" popped into my head when I was writing it and keeps popping back in. I just like the way it sounds, although it's a lot more flowery than I like to write these days. Not my best line, but definitely my favourite.
40) best piece of feedback you’ve ever gotten.
Oh man, how to choose! I think it's a three way tie of comments left on my latest fic, Watching Over You - my wonderful friend Liz rereading chapter 3 before bed multiple times, someone here on tumblr saying it's a perfect bedtime story and they've reread it multiple times and it was an instant bookmark, and the absolutely tear-inducing comment on actual ao3 that my writing was cinematic and also "flows beautifully and is so enjoyable to read." I actually couldn't reply to that comment for almost a week cause my brain kept making dialup noises every time I read it! I actually got so much lovely feedback on that fic, I'm grateful for every single comment!!!

I finally managed to sit down and watch the new episode of Star Trek: Prodigy (love the show! I hope it goes far) and I’m enjoying the discovery of the Holodeck and the idea of Dal trying the Kobayashi Maru test, and just ecstatic over the Enterprise D bridge being the setting. And then he asks for his bridge crew.
At first I thought Spock was just a good Nimoy sound alike, or maybe the Discovery Spock (I still need to watch Discovery). But as it goes on, I’m finding it weird how the audio seems inconsistent.
And when they’re on the Klingon bridge, it hits me and I just break. I literally spend the rest of the episode in tears realizing that it was archived audio, and that they briefly brought Nimoy back to us. Spock as he was, not using any new computer tricks to resurrect his voice. And I felt like that is just the greatest honor for him, and Dal learning what it means to be a leader from Spock himself.

I’m catching up on Ethersea and they’re with the giant clam
And Zoox’s conversation with the clam, initially, calling the clam beautiful and amazing and just so absolutely enthralled with it just felt like such a conversation that the Doctor would have with something similar, enough that I would love to take the script and put it to a scene with the Doctor (except I can’t art well enough to draw it)

My #1 post of 2022
Evolution in Digimon can be… odd.
And I didn’t really think about how weird it was until talking with people that never really watched it, since I’m playing Cyber Sleuth, and chatting with friends.
I mention Angewomon and how her previous form is a cat, Gatomon.
“Wait, how was she a cat before?”
I had never considered it, cause I took it as perfectly natural that Gatomon becomes Angewomon. And partly because they are alive but also still just… straight up digital information (part of the theory that the names all end in mon because it’s .mon - Gato.mon, Agu.mon, angewo.mon. It’s their file extension.
And they don’t really follow a biological form of evolution like Pokémon does. And as I’ve been playing cyber sleuth with being able to bounce through different trees as I go up and down and realize just how connected all of them actually are, and you can have a fire become a wind and then back down to an electric with typing. It’s all over the place.
But as I was working on filling out the book, the wildest string came forth.
First we got our cute blob.
Tumblr media
And then our squishy.

Could I ask a for all of them except for 3, 7, and 13? If that’s not okay can I have all the character/food ones instead?
Also because I’m an absolute idiot and can’t remember if I already asked, which mirror universe characters would you bang like a screen door in a hurricane?
-Horta-in-Charge
Oh, absolutely you can, friend! 💜 It’s my pleasure! Thank you so much for the questions!
1. What would your station be? (Engineering, science, security, command, medical, pilot.)
Ooooh, I’d like to be a science officer! That would be so fun! Low-key that’s why I always end up making my reader-insert characters be science officers.
2. What class of starship would you want to be assigned to?
Intrepid class, like Voyager! It seems not quite as large as the Enterprise, but not too small. Fast and maneuverable, yet filled with the creature comforts.
4. What’s your favorite Q encounter?
I love “The Q and the Gray” from Voyager - where Q tries to seduce Captain Janeway.
5. What’s your favorite rule of acquisition?
“112 - Never have sex with your boss’s sister.” I would like to know the specific circumstances that brought that rule into existance. I bet it was hilarious, knowing the Ferengi!
6. What Star Trek food or drink do you wish you could try?
There are a lot that I’m curious about, to be perfectly honest. Earlier when I answered this, I gave the drink I’d most like to try, so this time I’ll give the food I’d like to try. I think I’d like to try Sem’hal stew. It’s a Cardassian dish, and I have to admit, I’m extremely curious about it!
8. What planet would you visit and why?
I know I said Cardassia and Risa earlier, but tbh I’d also really love to visit Andoria, just to see what it’s like. I tend to like the cold more than the heat, so...yep. A cup of hot cocoa and a stroll through the ice tunnels seems like a fun way to spend the day!
9. What’s your favorite non humanoid lifeform?
THE DOGGO WITH THE FUR AND HORN FROM TOS. *ahem* Sorry, didn’t mean to shout. I just. Love. The space doggo.
10. What characters are in your dream poker game?
Given that I have no idea how to play poker, I’m gonna say Riker, Data, Geordi, Taurik, and Picard.
11. What holodeck program would you run?
I answered this earlier, but again, I’ve rethought my answer (it’s been an indecisive night lol). I think I’d like to try that tropical resort program that Neelix, Tom, and Harry have on Voyager.
12. What alien would you bone?
Because it’s a long list, and I’ve already been asked this I’ll give a totally different answer than I did before. I’d be down to bone with Solok! ❤️ Pretty Vulcan Captain Man...🥰
14. Favorite Star Trek tech?
Purely for comedic effect, the data PADDs that only hold like one file at a time so that people have to carry like a stack of 15 like digital library books.
15. What’s your favorite Star Trek holiday or celebration?
I like the Bajoran Gratitude Festival! It’s so positive and it seems like fun lighting a teeny scroll on fire! *giggles in pyromaniac*
16. What’s your favorite bad luck O'Brien episode?
I love “Babel”. O’Brien’s sarcastic outbursts prior to his contracting the virus were so entertaining, even if he was being tortured by overwork.
17. If you could fight any character, who would you fight?
I answered this earlier, but tbh, I think I’ve rethought my answer. I’d like to fight Jadzia - not in a rawr kind of way, but in a she knows how to fight and I’d like to see how long I last against her kind of way.
18. Who is your favorite on screen couple?
Look, the OG answer is Spock and Kirk, but if you’re talking a couple that ACTUALLY got together, then I LOVED B’Elanna and Tom.
19. Favorite mirror verse episode or character?
OOH, I have an answer for both! Favorite episode “The Emperor’s New Cloak” because Mirror!Brunt and a gay kiss all in one episode! Favorite character...probably a toss up between Mirror!Kira and Mirror!Malcolm.
20. Favorite Dax host?
Jadzia, my beloved! I know Ezri is awesome, but tbh, Jadzia was onne of the first female characters I ever had a crush on, so she has a special place in my heart.
21. What’s your favorite plot hole or little detail?
THE TWO BORG QUEENS. I know it had something to do with time as a way to explain her away, but...she...she dies twice...
22. Favorite piece of art or decor seen in the Star Trek universe (possibly background)?
I love the Horga’hn in Riker’s quarters. For purely slutty reasons.
23. What’s your favourite firefight?
The reliquary fight in ST:ENT S1E7 “The Andorian Incident” springs instantly to mind.
24. What character do you love to hate?
Sloan from DS9! I wanna chew him up like a chew toy. (And for once I don’t mean that in s sexual way lol)
25. What’s your favorite non recurring character?
I said Gul Macet in the answer I gave before, but I also really really love one of his officers: Glinn Daro. We never even get a first name for the man and he’s got me in a tight fucking chokehold.
ALSO you are not an idiot, and I don’t believe you’ve asked that before, SO
BONUS: Which mirror universe characters would you bang like a screen door in a hurricane?
There are a lot tbh, but the ones who immediately spring to mind are Mirror!Kira and Mirror!Malcolm. Also, since you told me he exists, Mirror!Shran. Because Shran.
