I hope this is okay to ask...but do you think it's okay for non-native and non-indigenous people to do formline art? I've seen some stuff online say that making it is a great way to connect to various native cultures as well as helps you learn and notice the patterns and symbols within formline art, as well as help you appreciate it more, but I'm not sure. It's something I'm super interested in and love how it looks, but I don't want to be hurtful.
This is just my opinion but if you want to and you’re non-indigenous, I think it’s ok to give it a try!! As long as you don’t sell it/promote or claim it as actual Indigenous art, I think you’re good! It’s always good to have a teacher of course (my dad won’t ever not bring up how mad his mother was when he first started his journey making formline art without a formline teacher and she lectured him about how he was making it thoughtlessly before bringing out a bunch of his dad’s templates/sketchbooks). Like you said, formline art has patterns and rules and symbols that you don’t pick up on just from looking at or referencing someone’s else’s art.
Of course keep in mind that formline art and knowledge can be passed through family teaching their own family, so some families and teachers might prefer or prioritize their time to their family members, and some formline artists may prioritize young Indigenous artists over non-Indigenous artists as it’s their culture and birthright. But I think as long as you’re respectful and try and consult with Indigenous elders/formline artists and don’t do a whole “Spiritual Insight Online Etsy shop with mass produced dream catchers and random “”Native American”” art prints” shtick, I think you’ll be fine!

It went over people’s heads yesterday b/c there’s so much happening but the UK’s anti-boycott bill was not stopped at its Third Reading on the 10th. So now, it need only pass through the House of Lords for the government to hold public bodies ‘accountable’ to it.
Here is a petition to put your name down showing you disagree - evidence of how large protest will be when the Lords accept it. With large enough numbers, it might deter them, but I’m not hopeful. I have more specific action in mind going forward.
(This is a bit more north Irish centric but worth mentioning)
Unless they ever get their shit together, I have abandoned support of Sinn Féin. I strongly encourage other nationalists to do the same. I don’t know how good their work is in the south, but in the north, they’re equal to the DUP to me now. Might as well be the same party, different colours at this point.
Of the recent bills passed through UK parliament regarding occupied Palestine (and now, possibly, the right to abstain from business with human rights abusers of any flag as peaceful protest), Sinn Féin has continued to stick to its symbolic protest, its abstentionism, in spite of increasingly dire circumstances.
Why continue to give them seats at Westminster if they won’t be used even in times of crisis, in times where the politics of UK will determine that of the world?
Idealised inaction does not work in a non-ideal world. Remaining quite literally neutral on genocide over an Irish-centric hypothetical, while tangible harm comes to our fellow victims of occupation, makes you complicit in their murder. Sinn Féin are complicit in their murder.
Our Palestinian cousins deserve better. Our friends all across SWANA, as they now face a repeat of 2000s racism campaigns by western media outlets and politicians, need better.
Besides protesting directly (though kinda pointless because Stormont is still unoccupied and not all of us have ways to Westminister), I think it’s clear SDLP should be voted in where possible as MPs at the next election.
They have been present, and voted against, every recent bill regarding the lack of restraints on Israel. And while they are too neutral on nationalism for me personally, Alliance has consistently seen its deputy leader vote in Westminster against most of its worst bills. I’m grateful for his work.
We have to do more. Boycotting Starbucks and McDonalds and HP and all that isn’t enough. All those occupied and unfree shall never be at peace. There is no point in a united Ireland built by those complicit in violent imperialism. Should that happen, we will have become that of which some lost their lives protesting. It’s only right we take power off of people who won’t prioritise the victims of imperialism when the situation demands it.

in my hc the noble houses of menzoberranzan operate similarly to the houses in ice and fire where they’re constantly feuding with each other but instead of trying to take the throne/control of the whole realm they’re all fighting for lolth’s favour instead. and because they can’t outright declare war on each other (forgot the reason for why they can’t exactly do that but iirc lolth doesn’t like it?? she loves the drama I guess) and if they rise too quickly lolth casts them down so they have to be cunning about it. not to mention if they stay too long in power and do nothing about it that also displeases the spider queen so the nobility’s game of intrigue is constantly moving and working both for self gain and for self preservation.
shri’iia also plays the game but more of a pawn than a player. she’s not born from any noble house (she’s actually a commoner). the only reason why she has any foot in the game is that she’s taken in by the matriarch of faen tlabbar - one of the houses who fervently worships lolth to the point of zealotry - when they’ve heard word that she—a commoner—have managed to succeed lolth’s trials and gained her blessing. lolth blessings are rare to come and making someone a paladin is even more rare so for a zealot house, that’s a a sign they can’t pass up. so, the house matriarch takes her in and keeps in a tower where she’s supposed to pray and train to lolth day and night. the paladin oath that shri’iia swears is both for lolth and her matriarch; she swears to punish the enemies of her mistresses and forever keep her loyalty to them. her matriarch’s word is an extension to lolth’s will, so to disobey her will be disobeying lolth herself.
and ofc shri’iia being born poor with everything to give and nothing to lose, who thought that there is more to her life than a merchant’s daughter, to be known by the goddess she worship and noticed by one of the most influential houses in the city, swears herself to that oath. she never regretted that choice not even when she’s kept in that tower in complete isolation with her matriarch being the only person she could interact with.

i’m gonna say something possibly controversial but i don’t like spiderdads as a romantic ship. it’s cute platonically, i love seeing art of them being grumpy + sunshine besties. but them being a romantic ship just feels. forced. i personally really dislike ships that are just there because they’re the same sex and breathing next to each other. like maybe if peter didn’t have a whole ass family, maybe i wouldn’t mind spiderdads so much. but i really don’t like the homewrecking aspect of it
and don’t come at me with the mj+peter+miguel polycule. i rarely if ever see you guys include mj.
idk. maybe it’s a me problem, but it’s just kinda something that bothers me. i ship a lot of gay shit but i don’t like ships that are there just because they’re gay (also applies to franmaya a bit but it doesn’t bother me that much,,,, sorry franmaya shippers)
