TADC: MatPat's video is lazy/my theory

Okay, big opinion post coming... I actually cherry pick his vids so I have no idea about his hit/miss rate, but I do feel like his video on TADC is pretty empty compared to what I usually see from him. First of all, he pointed out some obvious things (tadc being a video game) and stuff that easter egg/explanation videos already pointed out weeks ago. Suffice to say, I kinda expected more effort from a youtuber of his caliber. I think he was not only lazy, but in some other cases... imho he's simply wrong.

Here's my theory, you can stop reading if you want your speculation to remain unbiased. You've been warned.

I feel like MatPat's asking the wrong questions. Wouldn't it be more logical to have your consciousness simply copied into a game than to integrate your physical self? Maybe it was this revolutionary new idea to have the players scanned and then they'd receive a personalized avatar in the game, a technology unlike anything that have existed before. But handling that requires a beefy PC and a beefy AI, hence the existence of Caine. But if we're in a game, why is it running constantly? I think it shouldn't, and something went wrong. Caine was only supposed to handle these players' avatars (y'know, putting them into situations) but the whole scanning thing was so complex that due to some error it went wrong and now he's stuck with these human consciousnesses that he has to help somehow if he wants to keep the game playable, which kinda sucks since he probably has no knowledge about the outside world. Hell, based on the exit door incident, I bet that he even made bedrooms and food only because the people told him about their average lives outside and this is the most he could do to keep them sane since he can't manipulate their minds. He's this world's Monika, but less yandere, and probably unable to break the 4th wall (not towards the audience but towards the developers), because come on, someone would have noticed that by now. He just sees people coming and getting abstracted, more people coming... Meanwhile in the real world the devs have no idea why do their player files keep getting corrupted, so they keep debugging the code and keep testing the game... I wonder if there's a previous copy of any existing person among the abstracted and if yes, is it a perfect copy? Will the people outside ever discover what is wrong or will they sell the game as is? Is it wrong to kill digital copies of people?

But maybe I'm wrong and this is like Matrix and Caine is using them all as a meat computer :D hahahaha

As someone who likes to focus on character design in my art and frequents a lot of character creation spaces because of it, I feel I can say with confidence (Most of) the characters in The Amazing Digital Circus have commonly-used-online design traits and sources of inspiration, which make their designs feel not too exciting and maybe a bit uninspired.

HOWEVER, What makes these guys more unique lays in their personality, voice acting and animation, which perfectly fits the narrative of the story (imagine being stuck in VRchat). And It's literally perfectly fine to like the designs as they are. Their character designs have good colour contrasts which balance nicely over the design, a good weight distribution, strong shape language AND have an overarching style that ties them all together while also distinctly being based on different things and looking like they all come from a different genre of entertainment. For what these characters are, they are DESIGNED REALLY WELL.

I feel the character with the most unique and self-contained (for lack of a better word for "visually not directly inspired by something") design by far is Pomni. Literally chef's kiss. I love her expressions, love her strong colour scheme and I love how her jester's hat is stylised to be sometimes almost completely straight at the top. Her flat hat together mixed with the straight-cut strands of hair peeking out from under it are such a good and subtle contrast to her other round features that I'd dare to say they reflect her seriousness through the forced silly get-up put onto her by this digital prison. And her whole clown outfit is a really good contrast to the genuine dread and existential horror she's feeling in general. I can't get enough of it. Her design is perfect for her role in the story and also as introduction to the world we as the audience are new to.

That's why I'm honestly absolutely appalled by the amount of bad faith and horrible posts I've seen towards this project as a whole. It's one thing to not like it, but a totally whole other thing to actively make it (and the fans) out to be the worst most offensive creation to have ever touched the eyes of mortal men. It's not. And remember, people can be trolls to make a fandom look worse.

Online we have a fondness for kidcore and weirdcore aesthetics based on vague familiarity and nostalgia. It's OKAY to like a story/characters INSPIRED by these things. You are allowed to indulge on your own interests. Don't take these mean spirited posts to heart. If they don't respect your positive opinions of the show, you don't have to respect their negative opinions of it either.

Well, now that I have finished these doodles, I'd like a little constructive criticism to the pilot, its fandom and its creator:

Pilot & Creator:

I must say that this pilot is extremely interesting, even the animation is better than many projects from big studios! Just knowing that one of Gooseworx's (the creator's) inspirations was the novel "I have no mouth and I must scream" is an important and interesting fact that drives you to watch this series!

Unfortunately I didn't see this pilot until the end of December, since its fandom really repelled me from seeing this project and I didn't know much about what they were talking about (I'll talk about that later), but I'm very glad I saw it. Its creator is a very creative person and she shows a lot of the maturity she has by making decisions based on HER DECISIONS and not by what the fandom wants (fan service).

Besides, I love the theories that people make regarding the plot of the series, personally I love the religious theory because of the references that gooseworxs makes.

Fandom:

Okay, I'm going into dangerous territory. I'm still undecided if I'll go in or not.

The reason is very simple, no one will deny me that the fandom is extremely sick, toxic and cringe; Which is why I didn't watch the pilot in the first place. I know not all fandom is like this, but at least 85% of it is horrible.

And I'm sorry to tell you this, but it's very possible that the same fandom will lead this project to failure and it goes without saying why. It's about to become like the fandom of Vivziepop projects like Hazbin Hotel or Helluva Boss (fandoms which I didn't last long in due to toxicity). At least Gooseworx is looking out for their fandom and trying to calm things down, not like "Miss Vivzi make polemics and look I'm inclusive AF, now go throw shit at Scott Cawthon for something that doesn't concern me but I still hate him, so that you don't see my hypocrisy creating characters that are also stereotypes while I boast about how proud I'm of my Latin ancestry even though I have never set foot in LATAM."

Plus, I found a ship that I love (but knowing the fandom, they might come and throw shit at me just because I like it) I'm still afraid of the fandom, but I trust that my audience is not toxic, and because they'll be able to enjoy the few fanarts that I will make of this project.

I can only hope that gooseworxs doesn't back down with this project and succeeds as it deserves.

Now, I'm not the type of person who usually makes critical posts. All I do is like posts that I think make perfect sense and has good points. You know? I originally joined here because season 2 of Helluva Boss was lacking plot holes and I wanted to see if YOU GUYS specifically have the same issues with Viv's writing and shows. I was literally so happy that I wasn't alone. I was so happy that I wasn't stuck on this alone. I thought I have actually found my people. I thought that this community was chill. I thought we were only criticizing certain parts of Viv's shows and how they could definitely approve. I thought we were discussing things on what we like and don't like. But recently? You guys have been way worse than the hh/hb fans istg on every fiber of my being. You guys are somehow WORSE than Vivziepop. So much unnecessary hate that it's not even called criticism anymore. You guys were wishing for this show to flop and I'm just sitting here feeling concerned the whole time... Why would you guys wish that for a creator? But instead, you bring them down. I barely see good takes anymore because almost everyone here is just a bully. You guys have been leaking dialogues, watching episodes early, spreading spoilers around without any care in the world. You guys have made assumptions of Viv harrasing Gooseworx all because you think she's a legitimate bad person. You guys have been screenshotting harmless photos of hh/hb fans on Twitter who are just enjoying their time watching Viv's shows and then proceeded to shit on them. For no reason. My Prediction for Episode 2 of The Amazing Digital Circus

heads up, this is purely my own theories based on what I know of the trailer, as well as gooseworx's tumblr posts. this can easily be interpreted as a guess to the plot of the second episode, that said, if any of these guesses are correct, then I'm sorry for the spoilers.

let's get into it.

we start the episode with what I assume to be a dream sequence for Pomni. which makes sense considering what happened in episode 1 (aka the pilot). it wouldn't surprise me at all that her run in with the abstracted kaufmo was traumatizing. Watching that abstraction later get thrown into the cellar, and realizing that abstraction is the digital world equivalent to death, is also a pretty rattling experience. so it would make sense that Pomni would have a dream about abstraction as she tries to wrap her head around it.

that said, her dream sequence starts in the main area of the circus tent, where it is presumably the next day and she's with the gang waiting for Caine to show up and drag them all into an adventure of some kind. And either when Caine shows up, or while they're waiting, something happens that is disturbing to Pomni. what that is, is very much unknown. but this reaction doesn't just naturally happen, it's triggered by something.

so she sees something horrific, and in this dream it seems to start to push her to her breaking point, existentially.

Pomni looks down at herself and her horror grows. part of her is abstracted. Pomni feels a bit of fear and confusion not knowing what to do, and scared about going in the cellar. Caine doesn't care about that though, and upon seeing that she's "abstracting", does the same thing he did to kaufmo. opening a hole in the floor and throwing Pomni in the cellar.

Pomni tries to grab for anything, desperate not to join the fully abstracted. she yells "no", almost as if to plea that she wasn't insane. that there was no need to lock her away just yet.

then Pomni wakes up with quite the start.

I think anyone would be disgruntled with a wake up call like that, but nonetheless, Pomni gets up and joins the others at the main stage area.

Pomni waits with Ragatha and Gangle, asking questions she didn't really get to have answered in the last episode.

now, I have no way of knowing what kind of dialogue the characters will be sharing between each other during this episode, so I don't know what is said until the episode airs. all I have are the episode 2 quotes that gooseworx dropped on their page.

so broadly speaking, Caine gathers the rest of the gang, Zooble opts out of the adventure, and Caine shoves everyone else through a portal into the Candy Canyon Kingdom!

Yippee!

now in this episode we have 3 characters (technically 5 but I'm counting gumigoo and his gang to be all 1 entity here). the list is loolilalu, gumigoo (+max and chad), and the fudge monster. Princess Loolilalu, I believe is the sort of quest giver of the adventure. I think loolilalu will send the gang to deal with Gumigoo, and his compatriots, chad and max. who are bandits, and make a bit of a habit of stealing from loolilalu's subjects, even resorting to violence to get what they want.

Princess Loolilalu simply can't let that stand, and sends the circus crew (minus Zooble) out to apprehend them. giving Ragatha a Key in the process.

now a lot of people speculated that it'd be a key to the kingdom or something like that, but that doesn't make sense considering pretty much all the shots outside of the celebration on their arrival take place outside the castle walls. No, I think that the Key is for a truck, specifically the truck the circus crew use to chase Gumigoo and his gang with. -this also makes sense to the degree of "how would Caine know the visual difference between a door key and a car key? they're both just keys to him"-

also quick side note: during the celebration as the circus crew arrive at the candy canyon kingdom, one of the audiece NPC's is seen absolutely booking it at Gangle, and I think that the NPC is going to run into her, breaking her comedy mask.

anyway, the Gang piles into the truck, Gangle driving, Pomni, Kinger and Ragatha in the backseat, and Jax getting shotgun...

... -ahem- anyway, through a series of whacky hijinks, the circus crew and gumigoo's crew end up in an intense car chase, with Pomni somehow getting on top of Gumigoo's van in the process.

However, something happens to the truck the circus crew are in, that makes it have to either slow down or stop. rather that's a tire falling off or something else entirely is still up in the air. this normally wouldn't be too bad of an issue.

but Pomni is still on top of gumigoo's van...

this is where the circus crew splits up a bit, as Pomni is left to Gumigoo and his gang while the circus crew figure out how to get the truck up and running at full speed again.

So Gumigoo and his gang try to get Pomni off their van. However, Pomni is a survivalist at her core, and a resilient one at that. So the gummy gators have a hard time getting Pomni to let go of their car. they have such a hard time about it that they start doing doughnuts in an effort to spin her off the car.

what happens after is pretty up in the air, but I'm pretty sure Pomni ends up getting flung very far after loosing her grip and literally flying off.

Meanwhile, with the rest of the circus crew. Ragatha's upset on Pomni's behalf, at the fact that they left her with the gator gang. Jax brushes it off, which only upsets Ragatha more.

The circus crew pull over and assess the damage to the truck, which could be anything from a flat or missing tire, to complete engine failure. what needs to happen to fix the truck is unknown, but the truck needs fixing regardless.

-a moderate amount of chaos later-

the circus gang has fixed the truck and started back on the road again, however they are all completely lost. and end up accidentally wandering into the fudge monster's domain... oops.

Ragatha probably tries to reason with the fudge monster in order to not get eaten. it'd be a bit fucked up, but maybe the gang offers to feed some gummy gators to the fudge monster in exchange for freedom? idk, it's anyone's guess.

anyway, after the crew is done getting harassed by the fudge monster, they decide it's time to harass the gummy gators, and set out to find them.

this is also where the sweet sweet Jax angst is, as we see him just picking at the floor while hugging himself a bit. Not behavior you expect to see from the lanky bastard that makes his existence everyone else's problem. it might also be that he's a bit disheartened that Pomni was not with the Gator Gang, who knows.

anyway the gang start searching for Pomni, and uh...

I think they found her? honestly that small dot flying out of the water could be anyone, but Pomni was the only one missing from the group for a prolonged period of time. so it only really makes sense that it'd be her.

last but not least, we have the most confusing clip of the trailer.

now, strap on for this theory. so I think that this happens after gumigoo's companions are captured (chad and max). now, I think gumigoo was coded as an extrovert of sorts, constantly checking back on chad and max to make sure they're there and stuff. and now that they're gone, gumigoo doesn't know what to do. like his code doesn't have anything for when his compatriots aren't around, and the lack of his friends is maddening. because that is a look of existential dread and shock. and while specifically WHAT happened is a mystery, I do have a few theories as to what it could've been.

maybe gumigoo ended up running into a border of the world and that's what that blue grid is. him accidentally peeking beyond a world border to see a grid with lines and lines of code. maybe this event happens to cause gumigoo to gain a level of sentience, coming to the realization that once the gang is done with the adventure, his world will cease to exist. that all he was, is, and will be are just lines of code, moved around by another AI that is above him (caine). maybe gumigoo just experiences the existentials surrounding the mindset of "I am just a blip in the cosmos, a small insignificant spec in the grand scheme of things". which can ultimately lead to depressive lines of thought. Goose did say this episode would be about depression, I wouldn't be surprised if they also threw in something existential for funsies, or just to hit the point home.

and then the gang finishes the adventure and gets a lovely prize!

As to your question, well it seems like most of the Bad Webcomics Wiki has been scrubbed of a lot of it's content. The review page for Zoophobia is easy enough to find w google, but a lot of external links don't show up because I think Viv deleted them all.

I was able to find the forum threads for Zoophobia and Hazbin respectively, though I think the nasty rape art user is gone and I think Lincar Rox (his alias was The Toy Taker) was also banned from the Hazbin discussion. I'm a little busy and haven't been able to comb through all 200 pages of either threads for complete tea myself. You can def find the creepy angel dust r@pe pic on VivziePop's encyclopedia dramatica page which Chair linked to once (the ED page, not the creepy art).

As for things like Viv and Gooseworx acoknowledging the abusive art, that was on a tumblr post from their blogs (I can't access Viv's cause it's password protected) long ago. No idea if Gooseworx's blog is still around. I think Kendraw was aware of it when it happened but best not to bother them about it if they don't have the details.

I'm sorry all I have is basic "look it up yourself"+half links+heresay on my part. I'm not the best at snooping myself so it's hard to get the complete receipt trail. But yeah I would really like the facts on this matter unearthed for people to see and decide for themselves and also have it not be used against anyone. I can only tell you I was there when all this drama was fresh as I've been a fan of Viv since 2009 and thus following the drama that transpired in the indie webcomic space. I also, independently of my Vivziepop fix, went through my own reader of BWW phase where I would religiously look through their reviews on the wiki for snark on da comics I knew, which is again why I was so surprised to see Zoophobia even on there.

Honesty time on artificial intelligence.

So I recently watched a video about someone cloning Michael Kovach's and Gooseworx's voice using artificial intelligence (Apologies in advance for any spelling errors). It was terrifying. Like someone could easily clone my voice and make my voice say hideous things. I have a distinct vision on the current use of AI. There's the benevolent: safe for work roleplay and using it to get inspiration for original art that YOU make. Then there is the malevolent: using a character's voice to say horrible things, using it to make art designed specifically to embarrass someone, and NSFW roleplay.

I myself would not be comfortable using artificial intelligence to clone my voice. This is a serious problem because the bad person cloning my voice could make my voice say homophobic, racist or even antisemitic things. Or say something disgusting. And that's a huge problem since I myself am pansexual and a Jew. And I really don't like seeing children hurt because a stranger impersonated me. And do not make me into a Character on Character.ai. I've seen what happened with my personal favorite shit-poster pukicho here on Tumblr.

It's also problematic in school settings. Literally, my second day of English class, I found a section in my syllabus on plagiarism dedicated SPECIFICALLY to artificial intelligence. I have a personal rule regarding artificial intelligence that I apply for myself: never use it for work. Look at what is happening with Duolingo. I try to learn French (I'm already very proficient in French and brushing up), and I found French errors that would make my own French teacher in high school vomit.

There's a way to check if something is plagiarized. You either copy paste the things you hear in Google/Bing/whatever browser you use or (in Michael Kovach and Gooseworx's case) head straight for the source and ask.

There's a good reason why I am generally against AI. But I can see the good in it too. I'm not saying don't use AI ever, but for the love of Scott Cawthon, I advise heavily AGAINST using AI for malicious purposes or to make money off of someone else's work.
