In 2018, Mattel made a Frida Kahlo Barbie as a part of the Inspiring Women series.

Frida Kahlo is, of course, an artist deserving of respect and accolades. However, perhaps Barbie was not the place for that - her niece (Mara de Anda Romeo, speaking as a representative of Kahlo's estate) claimed that Mattel did not have the rights to use her likeness, and that if they were going to do so, needed to make changes to the design of the doll.

For example, Kahlo was renowned for her very distinct eyebrows, and while the Barbie does have more prominent eyebrows than typical Barbies, this does not accurately represent Kahlo's appearance. Additionally, the costume the Barbie is presented in does not accurately represent the Tehuana-style dresses Kahlo wore. Kahlo was also a woman who lived with physical disabilities, and the Barbie is depicted as able-bodied.

All of this is not even addressing the fact that Kahlo, as a lifelong communist, might not want to be represented by a capitalist icon like Barbie.

Mattel argued that they had the rights for the doll under a contractual agreement with the Frida Kahlo Corporation.

A Mexican court determined that the Frida Kahlo Corporation did not have permission to use or grant others to use the likeness of Frida Kahlo without permission from the owners of the rights.

As a result, the doll can no longer be sold in Mexico, however as of now is still available in the United States through websites like Amazon.

toyed with the idea of drawing a perpetua parent-clone duo as frankenstein + the creature (like, as a silly halloween thing), but oops it works well with most of them.

minerva & avery - mad scientist and her son, most overt parent-child dynamic. minerva canonically likes the story, they would totally do this for halloween and it would be cute.

luna & damien - starts off as something of a creator/creation dynamic, has very frankenstein-y motifs (damien's lightning, necromancy, (initial) rage towards creator). depending on the adaptation you go off of*, pinocchio could also work well (damien wanting to be 'real', coming of age, etc. also i pitch you: luna as a very miserable geppetto)

icarus & newton - THE mad scientist and his creation. newton carries a lot of that anger towards his creator and tendency to vibe in the woods + classic literature. however newton is not organic, aesthetically he's closer to pinocchio, and i like to think he was more of a troublemaker to begin with, like in collodi's pinocchio.

*lets be real though the story elements & characterisation from the del toro adaptation work best for these purposes

As a part of the Inspiring Women series, Mattel acknowledged a number of important women across history, but I wanted to take a moment to talk about the Jane Goodall Barbie.

Jane Goodall is now considered the world's leading expert in chimpanzees, with 60 years experience in the field. Given that she is now 89, that shows you what percentage of her life she has dedicated to this field.

And she has a Barbie.

I really like the design on Jane Goodall Barbie. I think some of her accessories are a little blocky, like her binoculars which sit as awkwardly as humanly possible, but her actual character design is great.

Goodall did a photoshoot with her doll, and the chimpanzee with it.

Specifically the chimpanzee in the set is representative of David Greybeard - a chimpanzee whom Goodall observed using tools in the wild.

I knew there was a deeply personal reason why i liked this series so much, despite it not being translated until fairly recently: all the girls are bi lmao

joking aside (i’m not, they all are bi), it’s actually pretty relevant to me how Sensei hinted at the hyper classic road of “enemies to lovers” between J and Manami when she was introduced...

...only to actually turn it into “enemies to brothers-in arms and also please look after my adopted kid and help her avoid making the same mistakes as me in case i die” instead (spoiling but i’m sure no one else on this site reads it so i don’t care)

additionally, i love how girls are written in this series. All the girls, fighters or not.

Like, in a lot of writing by guys (keep in mind the series is from the 90s), our badass hero with a vengeful objective may have scoffed at a woman being sent after him or would have simply guessed she was not going to be a big deal, but actually... in this series, J witnessed Mido kill gangsters one evening and he’s like “wow, she’s probably even better than me”. Simple fact, no colored judgement.

so the initial conflict opposing J to Manami doesn’t weigh in the whole man vs woman comparison, it’s just pure skills: she’s after his ass? well, that must be because she’s good enough (and so he witnessed by himself!), otherwise they’d have sent somebody else. And they have rather hilarious fights as a result.

Same for the girls who don’t fight: their lack of combat skills doesn’t mean they’re less interesting or weak, compared to the women who fight, or even to men. They just have different skills, bringing their fair share to the plot or developments.

Also in the end, the protagonist chooses a partner who shares the same aspirations as him, it’s not about “i need to protect her” or “she has my back”, it’s “we see the world the same way so we built something together and i want to protect it with you no matter what”

it’s beautiful. 

it’s why i love this freaking 86-volume-long-between-3-series crossover so much.

With that Skye hung up the phone. Huh, what a weird dream. It almost sounded like the end of little women, which she only knew because Jane had had an intense Jane Austen phase. That would’ve sucked. Good thing it was just a dream.

Skye Penderwick looked over at her goofy husband who was waiting impatiently for a midnight soccer match. Yeah, things were good.

I have always loved the Loki character primarily because he has been brought to life by the amazing Tom Hiddleston. He is far and away one of the finest actors of his generation and I'd tune in to watch him read a recipe book. And overall I really like the Loki show. It does interesting things.

I am looking at the "relationship" between Loki and Sylvie and I keep coming back to something Mobius said to Loki in season one -- (to paraphrase) that basically Loki's fascination with Sylvie is based on his narcissism and vanity. Basically that he is in love with himself. Did that penetrate? Has Loki begun to think about that and process that truth?

There might be another trope at play here -- that a woman's role is to help the man realize his true potential. The worst example of it is the woman in the fridge, where her death inspires the hero to take action to avenge her. But in a way Sylvie is a bit that character. She is the cautionary tale of where anger, resentment, loneliness, jealousy will lead. So Loki is processing that and also thinking about how his brother changed after he had been to Earth and had to live as a mere mortal. And in a way, that is what happened to Loki. For much of the show he doesn't have his powers, he can't claim he's a god, he has to rely on other skills.

So, that's my two cents about why I don't see a romantic outcome for what are essentially a genetic brother and sister, but we'll see what the final two episodes might bring.
