While I highly doubt this was ever intentional by the show’s creators - the Membrane family members really all map so well into a demonstration of, like, how conditional Autistic acceptance in mainstream society can be and how even other folks on the spectrum can beat down on other Autistic folks considered less ��acceptable’.

Because with Professor Membrane's single-minded life-long obsession with science and his absolute fumble in any sort of meaningful emotional interactions

It’s very easy to read him as autistic. But he’s ‘one of the Useful Ones’. His scientific Special Interests and workaholism are directly beneficial to society. And thus, despite him being obviously odd by IZ!earth standards, he became a beloved and admired public figure.

Meanwhile, Gaz’s special interest - video games - is not one that makes her more productive or a ‘useful asset’. But loving video games is still considered close enough to normal that, while she seems to be somewhat of an Outsider to her peers, it doesn’t seem that she’s Actively Bullied.

And then there’s Dib. The one who’s special interest is not socially acceptable and makes him seem ‘weird’ and ‘creepy’. And plus, while Gaz’s coded-Autism-symptoms mostly seem to make her kind of an antisocial loner, Dib’s manifest in a way that is a lot more actively ‘obnoxious’ to others. All of these aspects make him more of an active target of bullying and social ostracization - and even his weird autistic sister and weird autistic father try to push him into being more ‘Normal’.

I saw a post that said zim was taller than dib in show, I’m not sure if that’s true but it’s fun to think about

My two main obsessions right now are invader zim and psychonauts, so here’s gaz and lili looking at something (is it just a coincidence that gaz and lili are so similar?)

Here’s is something I drew about the return of keef unfinished episode (check it out if you haven’t, it’s such a silly episode). Dib and zim are being forced to share a smoothie, keef is watching in the back.

I mean, the thing about people interpreting Gaz’s dramatics literally and assuming that she’s got some kind of demonic magic powers or something

That it is pretty funny to imagine Dib being absolutely obsessed with uncovering the supernatural while totally missing the fact he lives under the same roof as a Literal Demon in a Human Guise. But it’s also a bit Weird to me because it means people sometimes cast Gaz as, like the Magic-Based Membrane Sibling versus Dib being the Tech-Based Membrane Sibling.

But actually looking at the canon of the show, Gaz is consistently defined by her excellent piloting skills

And she’s capable of cybernetically modifying her plushies into being man-eating security robots

And generally, her biggest hobby is intrinsically tied in with technology.

And meanwhile, while Dib clearly has some real impressive technological and hacking skills - he’s also the one character to explicitly try and utilize Magic in the actual canon of the show. Especially in the later episodes.

There’s almost like a mini-arc of Dib shifting to trying to foil Zim by more mystical means.

Hell, the entire concept of ‘Gaz, Taster of Pork’ is based on the idea that Gaz needed Dib for his expertise on magic and supernatural things.

So if you really wanna do the Membrane Siblings as, like, a Magic and Tech sort of duo - I think there’s more canonical support to doing Gaz the Tech Sibling and Dib the Magic Sibling.
