Jeremy Cassel

MC froze, they had been opening the tin for their tea and then suddenly saw a string follow the lid up. They pulled on the string and were amused when they found a little envelope attached to the end of it.  The note inside was written with a flourish, ‘Bonjour, mon chéri.  I cannot express the heartbreak I felt last night when I realized I would not get to see the morning light on your sleeping face.  An opportunity has presented itself and I cannot miss it, no matter how much I regret the timing. This is a little reminder of how much I love you.’

They chuckled and sent Jeremy a quick ‘good morning’ text. However, it was unread. Shaking their head, they assumed he was busy went about getting ready for their day. But throughout the house, they found several more notes.

On top of their clothes for the day, ‘while you don your beautiful wardrobe, please remember how I long to caress you as the fabric does.’

Inside their satchel, ‘If only it were I going along with you during your busy day.’

Stashed among their toiletries, ‘take care of that smile I cherish so much, I cannot wait to see it again when I return.’

Even inside their shoes, ‘Every step we take when apart are only promises of our continued journey together.’

With a disbelieving chuckle, they messaged Jeremy, ‘how many notes have you hidden?’

‘Far more than you will be able to find before I return you to my arms. Just to make sure you thought of me as often as I think of you.’ –winky face-

Edward Hyde

Edward took a calming breath and put on a smile before he entered the apartment, whatever tension he still had washed away as MC looked up from their spot on the sofa and smiled at him. The way they looked so warm curled up around a book. He had worried that with them living together that-

He shook his head, ignoring the thought as he moved to the sofa and flopped down next to her.

“How was your day?” They asked him, setting the book on the coffee table. “Henry reached out saying he couldn’t get a hold of you.”

“He did, did he?” The tightening was returning as he frowned. “Guess I’ll have to call him later to let him know how it went.” He pulled MC closer to him, “but before that, how was your day? Did you miss me?” He smirked at them, leaning towards them.

The colour on their cheeks made him grin, he pulled them onto his lap. “There we go, this is what I’ve been missing all day.” He leaned forward and nibbled on their neck, enjoying how they squirmed.

“Hm? What’s this?” He felt them moving and then felt something tug at his coat.

His vision flashed white as he pushed them off of him and he jumped up, his hand flying to the inner pocket that had held the large envelope. Empty. His focus narrowed on the envelope in their hand as they were sprawled on the floor. “What do you think you’re doing!? Was-!?”

“Edward?!” The tremor in their voice seemed to shake him and he collapsed to his knees next to them.

“I- I’m sorry…” He couldn’t look at them, “are you okay?”

“I’m fine, but… are you okay?” They slowly sat up, and the way they carefully moved seemed to twist the pang of guilt deeper into his gut.

“…” He held out his hand and when he saw them reach out for his hand he snarled, “the envelope.” His teeth gritted, he couldn’t believe that he couldn’t control himself better.

There was a moment where neither of them moved, and just as he was getting the courage to look them in the face, the envelope was set in his hand. As if that was his green light, he quickly wrapped his hand around it, crumpling it slightly as he hurriedly stood up and made his way toward the door.

“Edward? Where are you going?” Their voice was soft as they called after him, he could feel his heart breaking as he heard the fear, and he wanted to comfort them.

He spun on his heel and barked out at them, ��I love you!” And then slammed the door on his way out. He stormed away from the apartment, half way down the staircase he punched a hole in the wall with a shout.

He couldn’t believe he did that.

Once the cold air hit Edward’s face he pulled out his phone to call Henry, to update him on the information he received about their parents, and to ask him to check on MC.

Henry Jekyll

The knock on the door startled MC out of the script she was in the middle of reading. They stared for a moment before they were able to recognize that this was not part of their script. They opened the door, greeted the delivery man with a smile, and signed for the package.  It was only when they brought it inside that they noticed that the name on the package was Henry’s. MC looked over it for any kind of clue as to what it could be. But it was very discrete and even searching the name of the sender gave no results.

Finally, MC took a photo of the package and sent it to Henry, ‘you got a package here?’

The reply was almost immediate.  ‘The computer defaulted to your place, apologies. Thank you for signing for it.’  MC smiled, but then it was quickly followed up by a second message, ‘please don’t open it.’  Their eyes widened at the request.

MC’s gaze slipped to the package, their curiosity peaked.  Wanting to figure out what could be inside it, they lifted the box and it felt light, as if it was practically empty, and there was an urge to shake it, but when they thought of the lab equipment that he would sometimes use they set it back down.

It felt like forever before Henry stopped by, he leaned forward giving MC a soft kiss on the cheek before he reached for the parcel.

“What’s in it?”  MC finally asked.

Henry’s eyes widened for a moment before he looked away, and MC could see the colour rising on his cheek. “It’s actually…” Henry silently looked at the box before he sighed and set it down, opening it in front of them. Inside under a lot of padding was a well protected collectors box for Midfall Murders.  One that had Signatures on the case, including their own.

“I sometimes forget you’re a fan.” MC chuckled, hiding their grin behind their hand.

“I enjoyed your performance in it.”

“This has the blooper reel, doesn’t it?”

“Blooper reel, director commentary, and even a little documentary about real world inspiration that was used for the characters.”

MC stepped closer to read the list, before she looked up at him, “do you want to stay and watch it here with me?”

“I would love that.”

Congrats to the ultimate winner of the Hot & Vintage Movie Men Tournament, Mr. Toshiro Mifune! May he live happily and well where the sun always shines, enjoying the glories of a battle hard fought.

A loving farewell to all of our previous contestants, who are now banished to the shadow realm and all its dark joys and whispered horrors—I hear there's a picnic on the village green today. If you want to remember the fallen heroes, you can find them all beneath the cut.

What happens next? I'll be taking a break of two weeks to rest from this and prep for the Hot & Vintage Ladies Tournament. I'll still be around but only minimally, posting a few last odes to the hot men before transitioning into a little early ladies content, just like I did with this last tournament. The submission form for the Hot & Vintage Ladies tournament will remain up for one more week (closing February 21st), so get your submissions in for that asap! Once the form closes, there will be one more week of break. The first round of the Hot & Vintage Ladies Tournament will be posted on February 29th, as Leap Year Day seems like a fitting allusion to leaping into these ladies' arms.

It’s October! The month in which I watch even more horror movies than usual. Each year I tend to have a theme to help narrow down what to watch. So far I’ve done Zombie Films, Werewolf Films, Vampire Films, Slasher Films and Ghost Films. This year’s theme will be Cosmic/Eldritch Horror (or as most know it as Lovecraftian Horror.

This list isn’t going to contain every film in the world that is base on H.P. Lovecraft's works, have elements of it or is inspired by it. These are just the ones that I liked the most (that doesn't necessary mean they're all good though) and would recommend to others if they’re interested in this subgenre. So, in no particular order check out these films...

In the Mouth of Madness (1994) -- is an American supernatural horror film directed and scored by John Carpenter and written by Michael De Luca. It stars Sam Neill, Julie Carmen, Jürgen Prochnow, David Warner and Charlton Heston.

When horror novelist Sutter Cane goes missing, freelance insurance investigator John Trent scrutinizes the claim made by his publisher, Jackson Harglow. He's to retrieve a yet-to-be-released manuscript and ascertain the writer's whereabouts. Accompanied by the novelist's editor, Linda Styles, and disturbed by nightmares from reading Cane's other novels, Trent makes an eerie nighttime trek to a supernatural town in New Hampshire.

In the Mouth of Madness pays tribute to the works of author H. P. Lovecraft in its exploration of insanity, and its title is derived from the Lovecraft novella At the Mountains of Madness.

Color Out of Space (2019) -- is an American science fiction Lovecraftian horror film directed and co-written by Richard Stanley, based on the short story "The Colour Out of Space" by H. P. Lovecraft. It stars Nicolas Cage, Joely Richardson, Elliot Knight, Madeleine Arthur, Brendan Meyer, Q'orianka Kilcher and Tommy Chong. 

The Gardner family moves to a remote farmstead in rural New England to escape the hustle of the 21st century. They are busy adapting to their new life when a meteorite crashes into their front yard, melts into the earth, and infects both the land and the properties of space-time with a strange, otherworldly colour.

The Void (2016) -- is an Canadian Lovecraftian horror film written and directed by Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie, and produced by Jonathan Bronfman and Casey Walker. It stars Aaron Poole, Kenneth Welsh, Daniel Fathers, Kathleen Munroe, and Ellen Wong.

In the middle of a routine patrol, officer Daniel Carter happens upon a blood-soaked figure limping down a deserted stretch of road. He rushes the young man to a nearby rural hospital staffed by a skeleton crew, only to become trapped by a gathering of hooded cultists, and grotesque creatures.

The Lighthouse (2019) -- is an American film directed and produced by Robert Eggers, from a screenplay he wrote with his brother Max Eggers. It stars Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson as nineteenth-century lighthouse keepers in turmoil after being marooned at a remote New England outpost by a wild storm.

Cold Skin (2017) -- is an French-Spanish science fiction-horror film directed by Xavier Gens and based on the 2002 novel of the same name by Albert Sánchez Piñol.

On the edge of the Antarctic Circle, a ship approaches a desolate island, far from all shipping lanes. On board is a young man who is on his way to assume the post of weather observer and live in solitude at the end of the earth. He finds no trace of the man he has been sent to replace, just a deranged castaway who has witnessed a horror he refuses to name. For the next twelve months, his entire world will consist of a deserted cabin, trees, rocks, silence and the surrounding sea.

Note: I wasn't gonna include this but after watching The Lighthouse I figured why not. It certainly fits with the theme.

Underwater (2020) -- is an American science fiction action horror film directed by William Eubank. The film stars Kristen Stewart, Vincent Cassel, Jessica Henwick, John Gallagher Jr., Mamoudou Athie, and T.J. Miller.

After an earthquake destroys their underwater station, six researchers must navigate two miles along the dangerous, unknown depths of the ocean floor to make it to safety in a race against time.

Offseason (2021) - is an American supernatural horror film written and directed by Mickey Keating. It stars Jocelin Donahue, Joe Swanberg, Richard Brake, and Melora Walters.

Upon receiving a mysterious letter that her mother's grave has been vandalized, Marie quickly returns to the isolated offshore island where she's buried. Just as she arrives, the island closes for the season as the bridges get raised until springtime. Left stranded, Marie soon realizes that something is not quite right as she has one strange interaction after another. She must now unveil the mystery behind her mother's troubled past to make it out alive.

Annihilation (2018) -- is an science fiction psychological horror film written and directed by Alex Garland, based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Jeff VanderMeer. It stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny, and Oscar Isaac.

The story follows a group of explorers who enter "The Shimmer", a mysterious quarantined zone of mutating plants and animals caused by an alien presence.

Lena, a biologist and former soldier, joins a mission to uncover what happened to her husband inside Area X -- a mysterious quarantined zone that is expanding across the American coastline. Once inside, the expedition discovers a world of mutated landscapes and creatures, as dangerous as it is beautiful, that threatens both their lives and their sanity.

Event Horizon (1997) -- is an science fiction horror film directed by Paul W. S. Anderson and written by Philip Eisner. It stars Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill, Kathleen Quinlan and Joely Richardson.

Set in 2047, it follows a crew of astronauts sent on a rescue mission after a missing spaceship, the Event Horizon, spontaneously appears in orbit around Neptune, only to discover that a sinister force has come back with it.

The Mist (2007) -- (also known as Stephen King's The Mist) is an American science-fiction horror film based on the 1980 novella The Mist by Stephen King. The film was written and directed by Frank Darabont. The film features an ensemble cast, including Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, Nathan Gamble, Andre Braugher, Sam Witwer, Toby Jones, Frances Sternhagen, Buck Taylor, Robert Treveiler, William Sadler, Alexa Davalos, David Jensen, Chris Owen, Andy Stahl, and future The Walking Dead stars Jeffrey DeMunn, Laurie Holden, Melissa McBride, and Juan Gabriel Pareja.

After a violent storm, a dense cloud of mist envelops a small Maine town, trapping artist David Drayton and his five-year-old son in a local grocery store with other people. They soon discover that the mist conceals deadly horrors that threaten their lives, and worse, their sanity.

The Cellar (2022) -- is an supernatural horror film written and directed by Brendan Muldowney. It's an international co-production between Ireland and Belgium. It also starsElisha Cuthbert and Eoin Macken.

It follows a family whose daughter mysteriously vanishes in the cellar of the large estate they have just moved into.

Glorious (2022) -- is an American comedy horror film directed by Rebekah McKendry, and starring Ryan Kwanten and J. K. Simmons.

The film involves a heartbroken man who encounters a strange, all-knowing entity in a rest stop bathroom stall.

Bonus:

These are either based on Lovecraft's works, have Lovecraftian influence and references or gives off strong feels like one (even unintentionally).

I actually have an idea for Mycroft Season 2, the idea I had was one where she and Mycroft take a cruise. Mycroft ends up being surprisingly busy, so MC finds herself exploring on her own and making the acquaintance of Professor Moriarty. There is a plan for murder and hidden blackmail.

Brotherhood of the Wolf will be presented in its extended edition. Special features are in progress and will be announced at a later date, but Scream Factory promises over four hours of extras.
