For those interested: Joe Murray, creator of Rocko's Modern Life and Camp Lazlo, has released his 2010 book "Creating Animated Cartoons with Character: A Guide to Developing and Producing Your Own Series for TV, Web or Film" as a FREE eBook download on his website! It can be found here: https://joemurraystudio.com/books-by-joe-murray/
It is a straight download - no info input required, Murray simply asks you make a donation to a food bank or otherwise pay it forward. This book is since out of print and sells for astronomical prices online so for people (especially like me!) interested in animated TV development this is an AMAZING resource!
Here is the full page blurb for the download copied directly from Murray's site:
This book is one creators approach to creating and producing an animated series. Packed with details and lessons learned from producing Rocko’s Modern Life and Camp Lazlo, along with many side anecdotes. Also included are interviews with the late Stephen Hillenburg (Spongebob) Craig McCracken ( Powerpuff girls) Tom Kenny ( voice of Spongebob and Heffer), and many more professionals discussing their craft. The book has since gone out of print, and many resellers are taking advantage of a wanting audience by selling copies at an immense profit. I have received many letters from those who cannot afford these prices and feel they could benefit from the information here. Even though some of the streaming and broadcast information are a bit out of date,( and Lets Go Luna is not included here) much of the info is still relevant. So I am offering a digital copy for you as a free download. As payment, maybe you can donate to a food bank, or simply pay it forward somehow. I am working on a new book about story and character for animation. We will see how it goes. I hope this book can be of service to you. Enjoy!

We’ve seen a lot of great 90s reboots lately, but ‘Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling’ is still the best. TRANS RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS, BABYYYYYYY

Cartoon Network Friday Spotlight: Camp Lazlo- "The Book of Slinkman"
Tumblr media
Camp Lazlo was never one of my favorites, but I recognize that I wasn't in the target demographic when it was airing, while the series remains special for those who were at the time, so let's give it some roses.
This week, Samson, who's running the mail department today, makes a mistake and accidentally sends the Bean and Squirrel Scouts the wrong manuals. Jane Doe, the Squirrel Scoutmaster, promptly trashes her manual, while Slinkman (who to be fair, was received an advanced edition, aka a title-less cover) doesn't recognize the difference and has his scouts try out their new activities, like... baking while roller skating. Or speed dressmaking.
Weird, but the campers go along with it, as well as their new uniforms, which look distinctly like Acorn Flats' until they reach the end of the book, where all of Camp Kidney is put on an avoid list, leaving them all to be quarantined.
Is it problematic to see a bunch of boys try traditionally feminine activities like making and wearing dresses? I'm not sure. On the one hand, the joke is kind of on them, but at the same time, everyone goes along with it and seems to enjoy themselves, so I'd argue that this is a less distressing example of transphobia. Honestly, if boys want to look a little girly, why should we stop them? The episode ends with the Bean Scouts returning to their "manly" selves, though, so make of that what you will. Still, I think it's kind of cute on the whole.

After their animation production arm “Games Animation” merged with my studio to produce Rocko’s Modern Life, they solidified into Nicktoons Studio and put out Hey Arnold by Craig Bartlett and another show that was a bit of an experiment, called CatDog by Peter Hannan. There were two reasons why CatDog was experimental.
First, as far as I know, all the creator-driven cartoons up to this point had been crafted by an artist/writer with animation experience. Peter Hannan had some beautiful and funny illustrated books to his credit, but when Nickelodeon picked up CatDog, the Nicktoon Cartoon Factory merely placed Hannan, the outside creator, at the helm of the talented animation team they had already established. This move began to expand the pool for bringing in creators. The second part of the CatDog experiment, in my opinion, failed.
By that time, Nickelodeon had begun “stripping” the shows that had been in production since the early ’90s. “Stripping” means to run a different episode every day of the week (rather than once a week, which is the norm when a show is in production). This is possible when you have a good amount of episodes in the can, like 52 or 60. It also makes a good syndication block.
So what did the powers at Nickelodeon decide was a good experiment? To start the show out by stripping; in other words, to create as many episodes as possible as quickly as possible and start out airing a new one every day of the week. Then it could move into syndication more quickly, which is a big moneymaker for Viacom. I know a lot of the artists who were on that team, and I think they are still scraping their brains off of the floor from that experience.
