New Bollywood movie to add to the list of Bollywood movie that have utterly destroyed my heart, made me question existence, and fed my soul an array of beautiful emotions and a story for the ages : Kalank.
Tumblr media
No, seriously, I'm gonna need a minute here, guys.
This film is ridiculously gorgeous, I mean, the outfits? The sets? The choreography? The lightning and the colours? I'm. I'm speechless. Why is this film so beautiful.
I love the songs, First Class is one of the first Bollywood song I've heard, and one of the first Arijit Singh's song, and I actually had no idea it was from the movie. Ghar More Pardesiya has beautiful lyrics, Kalank is cute and heartbreaking, Tabaah Ho Gaye made me cry... I'm adding the entire album to my list of albums I actually listen to in their entirety, which is a very short list.
Tumblr media
Can I sing Alia and Varun's praises again? I know that's three movies of theirs in a row, but what can I say, when ou recognize talent, there's only one thing to do, scream about it to everyone willing (and unwilling) to listen to you go raving mad. Right, but seriously, Varun in this movie? With that hair and the khol eyes? The way he acts with his eyes in a way very reminiscing of Shah Rukh Khan and that the only other current Bollywood actor I've seen acting so well is Ranveer Singh? I swear I forget to breath when he's looking like that.

Alia and Madhuri Dixit ma'am's scenes together were fantastic, the raw beauty and power of these women, the sheer emotions they can make you feel with one look, one tilt of the head, one barely there smile...
And I haven't even talked about the story itself yet, but yeah. Love and hatred, vengeance and destruction, until it becomes the destruction of your own self, until hatred becomes love and love becomes hatred and you don't know anymore who you are, what you want, what you stand for... It is one of my favourite kind of stories, after all, love and destruction as the two sides of the same coin is a never-ending well of inspiration and motifs.
Anyway. That was an absolutely fascinating, mesmerizing and heartbreaking almost-three-hours of my life.

मैं कब तन्हा हुआ था याद होगा
तुम्हारा फ़ैसला था याद होगा
Tumblr media
बहुत से उजले उजले फूल ले कर
कोई तुम से मिला था याद होगा
Tumblr media
बिछी थीं हर तरफ़ आँखें ही आँखें
कोई आँसू गिरा था याद होगा
Tumblr media
उदासी और बढ़ती जा रही थी
वो चेहरा बुझ रहा था याद होगा
Tumblr media
वो ख़त पागल हवा के आँचलों पर
किसे तुम ने लिखा था याद होगा

Kalank
Kalank - a masterpiece in the most poetic and dramatic way. This movie uncomplicates the lives and perspectives of 6 people unfortunately but beautifully connected to each other. I really loved the cinematic experience this movie gave me, and all of the complex emotional processing shown in this movie makes me love it even more.
"Ishq aur nafrat dono ke rang laal hai. Farq ye hai ki nafrat dusro ko barbaad karti hai aur ishq mein khud barbaad hona padta hai, phir bhi kalank sirf ishq ko hi kehte hai"
Also, when zafar says he doesnt know if he was buried or burned but his aimless life got a purpose - love.
Zafar - His parents abandonment had torn him down and that is why he seeked revenge. He said he hated the family but in fact, he loved Roop more than his life, saved Dev, was affectionate towards his mother and his issues with dad faded from his heart in the end. On leaving hira mandi, he contemplated and chose Roop over his childhood place that was his whole life. But, he was betrayed by his own. ( final talk with roop)
Roop - She blamed herself for everything that happened in life but was brave enough to tell everyone the truth. She loved Zafar but couldnt respect him and respected Dev but couldnt love him. Her quest for freedom took her to various new footpaths. She was betrayed by Zafar but collapsed on his death. (talk with Satya at the start)
Satya - She just wanted her husband to be happy after she dies. On one hand, she felt happy that Dev is bonding with Roop and on the other, she broke her heart because she had to say goodbye to Dev and give him off to someone else. She was not fair with Roop for taking her life for granted. She also faced insurmountable pain because of her disease. ( crying in bathroom)
Balraj - He loved Begum but left her because of the society and his ego made him lose his son too. On talking to Begum, she mentions that Zafar's birth uncovered Balraj's real face and that is true. He also suffered his child and wife. (in begum mahal)
Begum - She spent her whole life waiting for her love. She was wrong to leave Zafar but very right to correct him when he was taking the wrong steps. She stays in hiramandi when the muslims break in, to save the lives she has sewed and dies there itself. (decided to stay back)
Dev - He could not bear the thought of second wife when his love was dying in front of him. He had issues with dad, but no hate for his half-brother or Begum. He gave Roop everything that she needed except for love. As a husband, he tried best to save both his marriages. At the end, he holds onto Roop because he cared for her and did not want to lose another partner, the only hope he had. (when in train, saves her)
The ending is very similar to titanic, in fact the way it is presented too. In all of their memories, their love and companionship stays alive with a love-filled heart. Roop and Dev both lost their loves but regained the hopes of living by each other's support.

Taking a break from the Goncharov descent to go watch Kalank with... yep, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt (and Madhuri Dixit ma'am!) because one's spiral into madness should not make one forget about their long term's obsessions. Also both my Bollywood movies guru and Einthusan tell me it's a must watch.
