"Ossan's Love" Becomes Japan's Number One Friday Night Drama of All Time
Tumblr media
oricon.co.jp
"This series of famous scenes has become the number one Friday night drama of all time, with the total view count of the first three episodes as well as the spin-off episode (available on TVer) surpassing 7 million (calculated by Video Research Ltd. from January 6 to 24)."
The Ossan's Love franchise began in 2016 with a TV movie that earned a small but loyal following that enabled the 2018 series that saw the casting of Hayashi Kento and the introduction of Maki's character. It's his inclusion, the chemistry between him and Tanaka Kei, and the extra work they did on developing nuance in their characters that I think led to the massive popularity of the 2018 drama.
It was only seven episodes, and no one expected it to be popular, but the final episode trended globally at number one on Twitter, which is bananas.
Summer of 2019 saw a movie that continued on from the end of the 2018 version. This was massive. Red carpet event for the premiere, nationwide theaters, merch, and the biggest screen in Roppongi Hills (the one with the fancy armchairs).
Ossan's Love was a massive success.
There was also the plane show in winter of 2019 (without Hayashi). It sure did happen.
The fanbase of the 2018 version (called S1 by the Japanese fandom) is huge and enthusiastic, so it's no surprise to see the success of S2, but to claim the number one Friday night drama of all time!!! For a queer drama!!!
A queer drama just became the number one Friday night drama of all time in Japan, a country that has yet to legalize marriage equality.
Incredible.

Maboroshi

Movies watched in 2024
Maboroshi (2023, Japan)
Director & Writer: Mari Okada
Mini-review:
I was really curious about this movie, since Mari Okada has written and/or directed some pretty amazing stories, and the promotional materials and trailers looked very interesting. However, I can't say I liked it as much as I expected. I did love how ambitious the film is in terms of concept and themes, and the animation definitely lives up to the Mappa standard. In particular, the final act includes some truly stunning visuals. Unfortunately, I just couldn't connect with these characters, and I didn't find any of them likeable or interesting. Therefore, this movie doesn't even come close to the emotional wallop delivered by the ending of Okada's previous directorial work, the beautiful Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms. So yeah, Maboroshi is well-made, but rather disappointing.

[HiGH&LOW MBTI]
Norihisa Hyuga: ISTP
Tumblr media
Hyuga is shown as someone who is wild and brutal, and ambitious in pursuing his goals. He doesn't do anything in his daily life, except get involved in fights or fall asleep (it was revealed in G-SWORD Manga). Hyuga has no interest in anything that doesn't offer him pleasure or excitement. I was fooled several times of thought this was a Ne or Se function, but the fact it isn't. He assesses a situation or event first (Ti) before exploring the objective details (Se). He did not immediately believe Cobra's statement about the USB containing details of the casino project's financial contributors, and rejected the proposed SWORD Alliance agreement. Hyuga uses his subjective logic in this matter. Then, he looked at the detailed facts long with his direct involvement in the event. Hyuga is a skeptical person and makes decisions after thinking it through carefully. It is also his subjective judging function that makes him someone who is very stubborn and unwavering in achieving his desires.
Hyuga is a typical adventurer who prefers action instead of talk. He established a sense of trust and closeness with Daruma Ikka members through joint activities. This also slightly changes his relationship with other SWORD gang leaders. However, due to the independence that his Ti function provided (and his severe sleeping habits), this process was not easy.
We can see the third and fourth functions (Ni-Fe) from Hyuga's change in priorities. He becomes more forward-looking, considers all the consequences, and prioritizes the stability of Daruma Ikka. He is willing to fight with SWORD to defend what he has.

On Ossan’s Love
I’m rewatching Ossan’s love (the japanese version of course) for the 100th time and maaaan it’s crazy how much I still love this drama. Every time I rewatch it, I love it even more than the previous time. I am still amazed on how incredible Tanaka Kei’s acting is and his phenomenal performance as Haruta. Characters like Haruta usually annoy me a lot but the way Tanaka portrayed Haruta made him so endearing and lovable- like it’s so hard for me to dislike him! Of course I have to mention Hayashi Kento’s beautiful portrayal of Maki!!! Like I don’t understand how could anyone not root for him throughout the show! I know I’m not saying anything new that no one else has said but it just feels so nice to reconfirm the feelings about a show that you really love. Like there are times where you rewatch a show and you wondered why you enjoyed it so much when you watched it first time but I am so glad this is not the case with Ossan’s love for me. Anyway, sorry for my ramblings! I had to get my thoughts out since there are so much new bl shows coming out nowadays so I had to revisit and talk about the classic that changed the bl industry forever ^3^

EarthMix's cameo in Ossan's Love Returns!
The two will appear as staff members at Moonlight Chicken, a Thai restaurant that Haruta and Maki visit. The restaurant's name is a play on the drama ``Midnight Series: Moonlight Chicken,'' in which they appeared, and the characters are said to be reminiscent of that drama. [source]

QUEER JOY
Sometimes I coast into this happy, glowing daze, and when I trace all these golden filaments around me to their source, I find my little shining harbor of queer love in media.
As a kid, I only knew queer stories run through with anguish and regret and shame. Reality echoed the same. The gnarled pain of AIDS lingered in everything, and I learned the term “gay panic” from headlines when it was used as a defense for murder.
I started reading the end of novels and watching the last scene of a movie or TV show. Generally, if the queer characters didn’t die, their happiness did.
When I was a teenager on the cusp of realizing my queerness, I craved stories about queer characters who not only got to live at the end of their stories, but queer characters who got to fall in love without punishment. Who got to the last page or the last scene and got to rest in bliss.
I watched shows like Queer as Folk in secret. I sought out any hint of queerness in shows around the world. I wrote queerness in fic where I wished it had been in canon.
When I watched Until We Meet Again in 2020, I couldn’t believe it was real. I devoured SOTUS after that, and Dark Blue Kiss, and Gameboys, and I Told Sunset About You. These queer stories where no one died. Where no one was punished by the narrative for being queer. Where no cruel, underlying message told the audience, “Only agony awaits the deviant queers—as it should.”
That’s why I never take this new era of queer media for granted. It’s what I always dreamed of having when I was young.
It’s queer joy.

And I’m grateful for it every day.
