She finds it very fascinating. 💥 "Blast" is the name that Kanoa gave her when she first joined in the WTF. 💥 She's a SWEET tooth. LOVES to eat some candies most of the time. 💥 And if you even THINK of stealing her food. Please don't. She doesn't like it when someone steals her food even if you ASK for some from her. Backstory:
Agnes was born on the Island being happily raised by her loving parents. She was the only child in the family and her parents had spoiled her at some times. She even mostly looked up to her dad. The man who had created fireworks as a side job for special events.
She was very amazed to see her father's creative work. Seeing his creation of making such a beautiful display makes her feel like she wanted to create some too!
She started to make something small. Like small firecrackers. She successfully did it but it almost burnt down the banana trees that were in her backyard. And her mother gave her a good ear folding for that.
But her father was VERY impressed. So he started to teach her how to make explosives as much as he could.
And when Agnes turned 15, she noticed her father was getting ill and knew that they didn't have enough money to get the medicines that the doctor had prescribed. Until she saw a poster about a science fair that will give out money for the students.
She started to feel excited and has hope that this will help her father. So she signed up and started working on her project. Which it's related to fireworks. Getting every detail right of how her father taught her about the fireworks.
Her project had really got the attention of the judges and was very impressed by this much knowledge from a young student. So she won the prize and finally got the money for the medicine.
But...when she arrived home to tell her parents the news. She saw her mother was crying in the living room and her aunty, her mother's older sister named Safaia, was there to comfort her. And she knows why. She knows that her father was gone before they could even call the ambulance. She was devastated and broken to hear her father had passed away.
It took a while for her family to get over their grieves and Agnes stayed strong to help her mother out. When she's a senior in her high school days. She noticed that the school has a special guest coming to explain about Military work.
She went to the gatherings and saw the presentation and the amount of money that they'll be giving. Which gives her great ideas of trying to sign up for it.
Her mother didn't agree to this when she told her about the marines. Afraid that she'll lose her only child and part of her husband's creation. But Agnes had reassured her that she will spend as much time when she comes back from her deployment.
So...her mother let her go and let her sign up for the military after High School. It took Agnes a while to get through the training until she had made it through enlisted. She was also interested in joining the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) as a specialist.
And her work had paid off when she was picked to help Kanoa and Tiala to assist in one of the missions that is related to bombing. Hostages were used with bombs around them by one of the terrorists.
Kanoa could see how fast and swift Agnes did of disarming the bombs and making new ones to defeat the enemies. So, he decided to pick her to join the WTF. Which she gladly took. She knows that her knowledge and skills of being a bomb expert is a blessing to her. And giving her enough passion to save the people around the world.

“Do I really have to be at the meeting?” You can barely keep your head up, your eyes are half open and yawning tirelessly while holding onto Mikey, your twin brother as he drives his motorcycle through the night traffic. You were in the middle of your second nap when he barged into your bedroom and practically dragged you out of bed. He didn’t give you time to change out of your lounging clothes.
“If I have to be here, so do you. You are Toman’s second in command.” He reminds you of your position. Mikey didn’t give you this title because you are his twin, but because of your matching and formidable skills. No one except for maybe Mikey can take you down. The only difference is … you don’t care about gangs as much as he does.
“Just go on without me and tell me the details later.” Laying your head against his back, feeling the nice cool breeze, and listening to the sound of Mikey’s roaring motorcycle engine.
“[Y/n], you need to take this more seriously! Toman isn’t Toman without you.” You are one of the founding members and the only female member.
“Then don’t make the meetings to be out in the middle of the night.”
“It’s only 9 o’clock!”
“That’s still considered night time and I’m sleepy!” You despise doing anything while you are drowsy and knowing in this meeting, you are not going to be speaking and you are better off sleeping at home.
“You slept majority of the day, dummy! How are you ever going to find a boyfriend if all you do is sleep!” You tense up a little bit but you must act natural to not bring suspicion to yourself.
“How are you ever going to find a girlfriend if all you ever do is have meetings at night!” Mikey and you continue your childish banters all the way to Musashi Shrine. The captains are shaking their heads or laughing when they see you two having your usual quarrels. This is nothing new to them, it would be strange if you two weren’t playfully fighting.
“Cut the shit, you two.” Draken, the peacemaker, breaks your silly and pointless arguments. “Meeting is about to start and you two need to pull your shit together.”
“She started it.” Mikey grumbles, he crosses his arms while looking away with a big pout and before you can counter, Draken quickly notices your lounge attire and asks.
“Why didn’t you change into your uniform?”
“I couldn’t because Mikey dragged me out of bed and didn’t let me change.” Draken sighs deeply before taking off his Toman jacket and handing it to you. Knowing Mikey, he won’t give his to you.
“Here. I’ll have Mitsuya bring an extra jacket for you next time.” Feeling a bit strange and conflicted to wear another guy’s jacket, however you need to keep your relationship with their rival gang’s leader, Taiju Shiba on the down low. It will cause chaos if anyone finds out.
“Thanks.” You accept his jacket, wrapping it around your shoulders just like Mikey. Draken’s jacket is quite long, it reaches your calves.
“Alright, gather round everyone! Meeting is about to start!” Draken grabs everyone’s attention, the captains and their division group form up and bow as the three of you make your way to the top of the steps.
“Greetings Commanders! Welcome!” They respectfully welcome the top leaders of Toman. Mikey commences the meeting and talking about trivial topics about other gangs. Ugh, I don’t even need to be here for this. Your phone suddenly vibrates in your pocket, you turn away to discreetly check who is contacting you.
Tumblr media
Bringing a small smile on your face, you gave him this phone nickname for two reasons. One, you can’t have anyone knowing you’re dating Taiju. Two, you made it ridiculous enough so no one can question you.
Tumblr media
You quietly laugh for sassing Taiju, you are brazen enough to talk to him this way. Your phone vibrated again for you to read his next message. Your eyes widen, uncertain if you are reading this right.
Tumblr media
Oh no, you frantically message him back to tell him to stay put but he is not responding. He completely made up his mind to let your relationship be known. Thinking of a way to get out of the meeting, you discreetly grab Draken’s attention.
“What’s wrong?” He quietly whispers, not wanting to interrupt Mikey.
“I need to leave to take care of something personal.”
“Are you in trouble or-?”
“Nope, not in trouble. I really need to-” A loud commotion interrupts the meeting and everyone’s attention is redirected in the back. I’m too late … accepting your fate once you see a familiar bright red jacket from the distance. Taiju’s magnetizing smile, heavy boots and humming drawing awareness of his powerful and confident presence.
“What the hell are the Black Dragons doing here?!” Several members are panicking and flabbergasted by their surprise appearance. Mikey and Draken remain calm but you can feel their anger for showing up unannounced. Taiju is never alone, he brought his two most trusted members. Koko and Inui.
“You have some nerve to be on our turf.” Muto glaring at them, he is prepared for a throw down.
“Guess they want to break their agreement and want to die tonight.” Nahoya smiles while cracking his fingers.
“Do you know why he is here?” Mitsuya quietly asks Hakkai, who is breathing heavily in panic and unable to answer.
“Well, well, well!” Kokonoi smiles playfully and enjoys their panicked state, “Isn’t this a cute little gathering?" Several of the members are scowling at his comment. “You can all relax, we are not here to fight Toman.”
“Then why are you here?” Draken steps forward with a commanding stance. Taiju’s golden eyes find yours, his lips instantly frowning. You are not wearing your Toman’s size jacket, it is much bigger than your body proportion. He walks up the steps with the sound of his heavy boots echoing and his eyes never lingering from yours. “Oi!” Draken is trying to block this muscular man to prevent him from stepping any further.
“Whose jacket is that?” Taiju asks in a gruff tone, revealing his little jealous side.
“Hah?” Mikey and Draken are confused about who Taiju is talking to, until you let out a sigh.
“Calm down tiger, I didn’t have my uniform and I borrowed Draken’s jacket.” Sliding his jacket off your shoulders and handing it back to Draken. “Here.”
“Is this the personal thing you were referring to?” Draken stares at you like an overprotective brother.
“What personal thing?” Mikey steps into the conversation with an unreadable expression.
“What is going on?” Everyone starts whispering amongst themselves, Hakkai is staring at you filled with confusion.
“I came to collect Toman’s second in command, [Y/n] Sano!” Taiju boasts loudly, everyone’s eyes widen and Mikey is now glaring at him. “We have dinner reservations.” He grins at you, “As I said before, I am not a patient man Sleeping Beauty.”
“[Y/n], what is the meaning of this?” Mikey is staring emotionlessly at you. “Are you hiding something from me?” Taiju let out a roaring laughter, disrupting a serious conversation. Oh my god, he is so embarrassing… mentally shaking your head with your hand on your forehead.
“Alright fine, I’ll tell the truth.” All eyes are now on you, Taiju’s smirking, Koko enjoying the unraveling scene and Inui staring blankly. “Taiju is my boyfriend and we have been dating for awhile.”
“WHAT?!” Majority of the Toman members fell to the floor in shock, Mikey is dumbfounded while Draken is speechless.
“Are you kidding me?” Hakkai mutters to himself, he almost couldn’t feel his jelly legs. He has no idea you had a secret relationship with his older brother. Toman are utterly confused on how to react to this. You are their second in command and you have a relationship with this brute? They turn their attention to Mikey to follow his lead but Mikey still hasn't said a word.
“Cat got his tongue.” Koko snickers and Inui nods his head.
“Mikey?” You are concerned that he hasn't blinked for the past 5 minutes. “You okay, bro?” He stayed silent for another minute or so.
“Is he ‘Beefy Toes’?” Mikey asks, throwing everyone for a loop of even more confusion and your cheeks are heated because you never told Taiju that’s what you called him on your phone.
“ … ‘Beefy … Toes’?” Taiju is not amused with your nickname for him, Inui stifled his laugh while Koko couldn’t contain his.
“Alright time to go!” You nervously brush past Draken and pull Taiju away from everyone. Not wanting to accidentally embarrass Taiju more. However, Mikey has other thoughts.
“Beefy Toes, make sure you have her home by midnight! We have lots to talk about later!” Ugh Mikey!!! Taiju’s hand grips yours tightly, knowing he is about to explode.
“Koko for the love of god, place our usual order!” Quickly pulling Taiju away, Koko’s laughter isn’t helping and Inui uncertain if he should beat up anyone who dares make fun of his boss.“Mikey, you are so annoying!”
“[Y/n], you are not off the hook yet! You are in big trouble with me!”
“He’s not the only one you’re in trouble with.” Taiju growling lowly only for you to hear. I really shouldn’t have come to this meeting … knowing this is going to be a long night of lectures.

Squidmas Special ‘23
Rating: G, Word Count: 4,863
This special was originally posted on AO3 in two parts between Chapter #22 - 1 and Chapter #22 - 2. It takes place 8 years after the end of TPWCH. Ryland, Three, and Captain are all the same person! I also made this relationship chart to help since there’s so many characters being introduced so quickly. And yeah, Koi’s birthday is on Squidmas, so they’re celebrating both events together. The story starts below the cut!
Tumblr media
“You’re sure it’ll be okay? It’s just… there’s gonna be so many people…”
“Yes, Capa. It’s gonna be okay. We have to let Tsuku spread her wings. She has to be able to take risks in order to live her life. We took plenty of them.”
“I know, I know…”
“And, hey. If anything goes wrong, we’ll both be there to protect her.”
The Inkling took their husband’s hands playfully. “I think that would just be you.”
“You’re telling me the Captain of the New Squidbeak Splatoon wouldn’t be able to hold off a couple of fourteen-year-olds? Because I know they could.” Eight bopped the white puff on the end of Captain’s Squidmas hat.
“I get nervous around little kids! I don’t know what to do or say! You know this.”
“Is that what it is? You’re nervous the kids won’t like you?”
“I mean…” Captain shrugged. They hadn’t been consciously thinking about that, but now that Eight mentioned it, maybe that was part of their hesitation.
“It’s all right to feel nervous… but kids always love you! Remember that one at Tako Bell who—”
“Yeah, yeah I know. I’m probably worrying for no reason.”
“Such is life.”
“And… what about the other parents? They’re probably all cishet Inklings, and we’re so much younger than everyone else…”
“If anything goes wrong, we can leave, okay? Or you can leave and I can stay… or whatever works in the moment.”
Captain nodded, and after a moment he raised his head to kiss Eight. “Okay, now where’s Tsuku?”
Captain made their way to their daughter’s bedroom door. “Hey Tsuku, it’s about time to go!”
“Ah, sorry, sorry… just five more minutes!”
“Okay koko, just come out to the living room when you’re ready!”
Returning to the living room, Captain saw Eight waiting, now with his shoes on.
“Tsuku’s still going to be about ten minutes,” Captain explained.
Eight checked his phone. “We’re going to be late…”
“That’s okay.”
“Yeah. Yeah it is.”
Captain ended up opening one of the dumb word games on their phone, and Eight did his best to help, until Tsuku appeared in the hallway. She was wearing a cute little red dress with white flats. Captain bent down closer to her and gushed, “Myushi-myushi ba~!
“Oh my cod, Fufu.”
Captain kissed the top of Tsuku’s head. “C’mon, let’s go!”
It was only a short train ride, and then they were standing at the front door of Koi’s family’s house.
“Um… do we knock…?” Eight murmured.
They looked at each other, and Captain shrugged. Then they both jumped back when Tsuku stepped up between them and gave the door a confident rap. Koi opened the door a few seconds later, and her orange pigtails flopped over Tsuku’s shoulders as they hugged tightly. Captain and Eight threw each other an awkward glance as they waited in the blocked doorway, and the two young Cephalings didn’t separate until another voice from inside the house called out, “Tsuku! You made it!”
The Inkling who had just started going by KJ ran up to them and hugged Tsuku too, although—both Captain
and Eight noticed—this one was much shorter.
Meanwhile, Koi stood on her toes and said, “Hello, Mr…. um… and… uh… sorry, are you… Tsuku’s parents?”
“Yep,” Eight said. “You can just call us us Eight and Captain… or Tsuku’s dad and parent, if that’s easier. The last names are sort of complicated.”
“Oh, okay! Welcome to our home… sorry again.”
“It’s totally okay! No harm done.”
As they entered, following behind the girls and KJ, Captain made a whining sound and whispered to Eight, “That was so awkward…”
Eight gave him a quick kiss on the forehead. “I know it’s hard. You’re doing great.” Eight also slipped his hand into Captain’s for support.
A few seconds later, they arrived in the kitchen, where René was at the dining table trying to explain the rules of chess to Cody, seemingly rather unsuccessfully. Beyond that was the living room, where eight adults sat on several sofas and armchairs arranged in a U-shape around a low coffee table, conversing in groups of two or three. A Squidmas tree in the corner glistened with ornaments and tinsel.
When René and Cody saw them, they both got up and raced toward them. Cody got there first and gave Tsuku a quick hug before rattling off a long stream of almost unintelligible words while bouncing on his heels excitedly. Then René hugged her too, but, unless Captain was mistaken, it seemed a bit more awkward than the others had been.
“Hi boys, nice to meet you. I’m Eight, Tsuku’s dad.” Eight shook each of their hands.
Captain just kind of smiled at them.
Thankfully, Cody interrupted: “René was just showing me this game called chest!”
“Chess,” René corrected.
“And there’s all these little figurine things that are so cool, my favorite is the little horse!”
“Knight.”
“And to win the game you have to trap the other player’s king, and it's called a checkmake!”
“Checkmate.”
“C’mon, René can show us how to play, he’s so good at explaining things!”
Tsuku, Koi, and KJ looked at each other, shrugged, and then started to gather around the table.
Eight squeezed Captain’s hand. “Ready?”
“As I’ll ever be…”
They hadn’t stepped two paces into the living room when a woman with long orange tentacles jumped up from a sofa to face them. “Oh, welcome! You must be Tsuku’s parents, then? Eight and Captain, right? Here, take our seats!” She started tugging at the arm of the man next to her until he stood.
“Oh, no, it’s okay!” Eight tried.
“No, I insist. Have a seat.”
So Captain and Eight scooted in next to a pale woman with frizzy purple tentacles, just like her son.
“You must be Cody’s mother?” Eight said.
“Yep. Alicia. Nice to meet you.”
“Likewise,” said Eight.
“And you’re Tsuku’s parents?”
“Right. We—”
“Oh, of course!” Koi’s mother interrupted, now sitting on the floor with her legs folded. Her voice was so strong that the other conversations quickly fizzled out. “Everyone, these are Tsuku’s parents, Eight and Captain. Eight and Captain, you’ve just met Alicia.” She pointed to a Black family with green tentacles sitting together on the sofa against the left wall. The husband and wife seemed to be the oldest out of everyone there, while the third person was the youngest. “These are Atlas and Jeane, René’s parents. And Atlas’s son Alex, just next to them.” Now she gestured toward the couch on the right, where another couple sat, this one with magenta tentacles. “And KJ’s parents, Vanessa and Robert. Have I missed anyone? Oh, of course! I’m Koi’s mother, Amanda, and this is my husband Glen.”
“Nice to meet you all,” Eight said.
“Nice to meet you,” Captain managed to squeak out, adding a little wave.
“You know, you both look so young for your age,” Amanda continued. “I’m so jealous!”
“Actually, I’m only 26…” Captain explained.
“Oh!” Captain could see the gears turning in Amanda’s head, trying to do the math.
“Um… we adopted her when she was six. I was only eighteen, so it was a hard decision, but she didn’t have a home, and we were the only ones who could take her in. I’ve always been… something between a sibling and a parent to her.”
“I see. Well, from what I hear from Koi, you’re doing a great job.”
Captain thought of several things to say, but he couldn’t get his mouth to form the words.
“Oh… have I said something?”
“Sorry, sorry! That just… means a lot, is all. Thank you.”
Amanda directed her next question at Eight, which Captain was grateful for. “So how long have you two been together?”
Eight looked at Captain with such a reminiscent, loving expression that it nearly made Captain blush in front of everyone. “We met each other eight years ago in July, and we started dating in November. We got married three years later, and we just had our fifth anniversary in August.”
Captain was frozen the whole time, staring down at a certain spot on the carpet. But when Eight shifted and leaned into him slightly, it broke the trance, and Captain looked up at him. They shared a smile.
“Remember our fifth anniversary, hun?” said Vanessa. “That feels so long ago.”
“Well, we are getting dangerously close to our twentieth, aren’t we?” Robert said back with a chuckle.
“At least you’re not staring down your fiftieth birthday,” Atlas remarked, with such an even tone Captain wouldn’t have known what to make of it if the smile hadn’t given it away.
“Fifty? No~!” Glen said with incredulity.
“Only two months left. I might as well start digging my grave now.”
“Oh my cod, dad…” the son, Alex, groaned.
“Oh, like you’ve never been dramatic about your age. I’m 14, I’m basically an adult,” Atlas mocked, using a deeper voice.
Alex rolled his eyes and went back to scrolling on his phone, but just after the conversation picked up again and everyone else had turned their attention elsewhere, Captain noticed that Altas nudged his son, and they both shared a smirk that somehow seemed to convey a strikingly strong bond of love between them.
Captain snapped to attention when they heard their name; it was coming from Amanda again: “Thank you again for coming, Captain, Eight. I’m sure Koi will love having Tsuku here. And it’s so nice to finally meet you both! And the same to you too, of course, Atlas and Jeane.”
A knock came from the front door. Captain whipped their head around toward it and made a confused face. They were sure that their family had arrived last, and everyone who they had expected to to come was already there. So who could this be at the door? Perhaps a pizza delivery or something?
They all already knew that the kids would beat any adult to the door, so they just waited, and Captain watched the archway to the kitchen anxiously, until finally someone stepped through—
“Lyle? What…” Captain couldn’t stop the exclamation before it was already out of their mouth.
“Heya, Captain. And everyone,” Lyle said with a smug grin. Eli stepped into view a moment later, holding his husband’s hand, and with his other hand he towed little Tempest behind him.
“Hi Amanda, thank you for having us!” Eli said.
“Also, um… Tempest’s bio moms wanted to come too at the last second, I hope it’s all right that we brought them along.”
And now the Meer-Hannon family stepped forward to reveal Agents Four and Neo Three—but they really should be calling them Aubrey and Yuki in a context like this. Each one was holding an infant with yellow ink.
Amanda jumped up from her seat again to greet them. “Oh, of course! Thank you so much for coming, I’m sure Betta will be delighted to see Tempest. She’s outside with Ava and Kate.”
“Do you wanna go outside?” Eli asked Tempest.
Tempest looked toward the sliding-glass door but shrunk back away from it, into Eli’s body. “You don’t have to,” he soothed. “You can stay in here if you want.”
Then Koi’s younger sister Betta poked her head in from outside. “Tempest?”
“Betta!” And any apprehension disappeared.
Captain jumped when Alicia called out from right next to him, “Kate? Is everyone doing okay out there?”
Now the older Larsen’s face appeared in the door. “Yep, all good, mom! Betta bit Aaron’s finger, but he’ll survive!”
“Aaron, are you sure you’re okay?” Alicia called back.
“Yes, Ms. Caruso, I’m fine!” a slightly strained voice called back.
“Betta!” Amanda called over them, jumping up yet again and heading for the door. “We do not bite our guests!”
“You want me, you get the whole package,” Kate joked.
“I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” Aaron said, coming just far enough into view that Captain could see him staring into her eyes. The scene was sickly sweet. Cod, had Captain and Eight been like that when they were younger?
Yes. Yes, they had been.
Then Captain’s thoughts were interrupted by a desperate cry of “FUFU!”
“Koko… woi’e bare?” Captain responded instinctively. Then they froze. Terrified, they shot a quick glance back at the other parents. None of them seemed to be staring at him—at least not directly—which he took as a good sign.
“What is it, Tsuku?” Captain said, hoping it would encourage her to respond in Inkling.
It worked, but it wouldn’t have mattered anyway since Tsuku got close and whispered, “I forgot the gift for the Secret Snowsquid!”
The gift… had they left it at home? Wait. Captain felt his pocket and, sure enough, he felt a small box covered in wrapping paper. “Oh, I have it here! I grabbed it just in case.”
Captain held it it to her, and the distress was replaced by a huge grin of relief as she took it. “You had it the whole time? Why didn’t you tell me!”
Captain lifted their hands in a shrugging pose. “I forgot.”
They both giggled. “Thank you, Fufu!”
“Of course, Koko. Are you having a good time?”
“Yeah! I just beat everyone in Super Splat Squids!”
“I’m glad all the years of indoctrinating you into video games paid off.”
“Okay, I’m gonna go back now. Thank you!” She gave them a quick hug.
“Of course.”
And now everyone was staring at them.
“Aww, you have such a cute relationship with her!” Vanessa said.
“Oh. It’s uh… nothing special,” Three murmured.
Now Amanda returned from outside.
“I’m so sorry about that again, Alicia.”
“Oh, I’m sure Aaron will be fine. As long as Betta doesn’t have rabies!”
Everyone laughed except for Amanda, who gave a tight-lipped smile. Then she seemed to notice Lyle, Eli, Aubrey, Yuki, and the twins. “Oh! Please, come sit! Oh… oh dear, we really should have planned for this better… you know what, I’ll go get the lawn chairs!”
“No no, don’t bother! We’ll manage. I think Mako wants down, anyway,” Aubrey assured her.
Amanda looked frantically around her before finally managing to calm herself down. “Very well, then. And you must be…?”
“Aubrey. And this is my girlfriend Yuki.”
Yuki braced Seki against her chest with one arm and raised the other hand in greeting.
“Good to meet you! Good to meet you…” Amanda seemed on the verge of a panic attack.
Four and Yuki took up spots on the floor and let Mako and Seki start toddling around them. Meanwhile, Eli sat on the arm of the sofa right next to Captain, and Lyle gave everyone an almost defiant look before plopping down right on Eli’s lap.
“Wow Eli, thanks for the up-close view of your ass,” Captain murmured.
“No, thank you! That’s the first time you’ve ever complimented my ass before.”
Captain gave a clearly forced smile.
They got along fine with Eli nowadays, but they couldn’t completely ignore the small part of them that got nervous every time they were around Eli, or even Lyle. It just dug up too many old memories.
The group got to asking about the twins, and how one of the hardest times was right after they start walking because you have to chase them around everywhere, and Jeane said something about how lucky Aubrey and Yuki were to be young and agile. Aubrey seemed to relax more after that.
“You seem awfully quiet. Yuki, isn’t it?” Atlas said eventually, holding eye contact with the Octoling.
Noticing his stare, Yuki signed I’m deaf with one hand, sort of dismissively.
Aubrey nudged her and explained, “Yuki is deaf.”
“Oh, my sister is deaf, so I know some of the local sign! Um…” Robert then signed something Captain didn’t recognize, probably in Inkopolis Signed Vernacular.
“Um…” Aubrey began, also clearly not recognizing it.
Japen. Japen! Japenese Sign Language! Yuki signed to her fervently.
“Oh, we use… uh… Japenese Sign Language, since Yuki is originally from Japen. It’s… an obscure local dialect.”
Yuki signed something else Captain didn’t recognize, looking a bit less confident with the hand movements, and Yuki and Robert conversed for a few minutes.
About two hours had passed since the Meer-Hannons and Kekoa-Johnsons’ arrival when the doorbell rang again, and this time it really was just pizza. Everyone gathered around the kitchen counter, where Amanda was frantically trying to set out plates and plasticware. “Okay everyone, if you want a drink, write your name on your cup with this Sharkie, and be sure to put it back when—” But the rest of Amanda’s words were drowned out by the commotion.
Captain hung back a ways away from they’d had the the first chance crowd, figuring they’d let everything die down before going to get their food. Eight waited with them, and a moment later his hand slipped into their hand. “Doing okay?” he whispered.
“Yeah. I think so. I wasn’t expecting to see Lyle and all of them.”
“Yeah, that was a bit of a surprise! Is it okay that they’re here?”
“Of course! Of course it’s okay that they’re here. It’s nice to see everyone.”
Eight met Captain’s eyes, and he didn’t look away until he seemed satisfied with Captain’s reassurance. “You can always step away if you need to, I’ll cover for you.”
“Thanks.”
They shared a smile. “Pizza?”
“Sure.”
Everyone huddled in the kitchen, making use of any chair, barstool, or—in Mako, Seki, and Eli’s case—lap that they could find, while Captain and Eight leaned against the kitchen counter, putting as much distance between themselves and the commotion as they could. Captain nodded in Eli and Lyle’s direction and scoffed. “How are they so confident? Lyle didn’t figure out he’s gay until like five years after I did. And Eli took even longer!”
“Yeah, but it went over a lot better for them. They don’t have the same trauma. And besides, it’s Lyle and Eli. Did you really expect anything different?”
Eight reached an arm around them and gently pulled them in closer.
“Merry Squidmas, Capa.”
After a glance to make sure no one was watching them, Eight gave Captain a quick kiss.
“Merry Squidmas, Eight.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That was followed by Koi opening some presents from her family and sharing some hugs with her parents.
Finally, Amanda announced that it was time for the gift exchange. They all gathered in the living room again, with Tsuku, Koi, Betta, René, Cody, Ava, Kate, and Aaron sitting in a circle on the floor near the tree. Each held a gift wrapped in colorful paper, ranging in size from the wallet-sized rectangle Tsuku was holding to a box as tall as Betta. Captain found themself staring at each of the wrapped gifts, as if staring hard enough would allow them to bore through the wrappings and see their contents.
Who had drawn Tsuku’s name weeks ago? What would they have gotten her? What if something went wrong?
Captain somehow missed Amanda’s explanation of how the gift exchange would work and the first few gifts being given. He didn’t even notice what the gifts were, only that Betta was shouting in joy, and everyone was laughing, and everything had suddenly become very, very loud.
Captain made eye contact with Eight, who was already giving him a concerned look. Eight nodded, and Captain got up, trying not to seem too hurried as they made for the bathroom. They sunk to the floor and put their head between their knees, left by themself with their thoughts, and took several deep breaths to try to calm down.
Fourteen years ago
Ryland stared listlessly at nothing in particular as the students around him filtered into the classroom and found their seats. He didn’t even notice when someone sat just to his right.
“Hi, Ryland!”
Ryland snapped out of his daze. “Oh, Ophie. Hi.”
Ryland's and Ophelia’s fathers knew each other from work, and Ryland was pretty sure his father was trying to set him up with her, but she had always been nice to him.
She leaned toward him conspiratorially. “Who did you get for your Secret Snowsquid?”
“We’re not supposed to tell,” Ryland said.
Ophie giggled. “That’s the right answer!”
Ophie seemed to be waiting for a certain response, but Ryland had no idea what it could be, or what she had meant from her last exclamation. He just kind of smiled awkwardly at her.
Luckily, a few seconds later, the teacher saved him from having to respond. “Good morning, class. Does everyone have their gift?”
“Yes, Mrs. Ippy,” chorused about a quarter of the students. Most of the others did have gifts; they just weren’t paying attention. “We’re going to be gathering by grade, so everyone find the others in your grade and sit in a circle. First graders, up here by me…”
Ryland automatically tuned out the extraneous information, but by the time he tuned back in, it was too late, and everyone had already started moving. Ryland just followed Ophie back to the corner of the classroom near the door, where they sat on the carpet. About thirty of them gathered around in a circle, out of whom Ryland recognized Billy and his clan—Lyle,
Eli, Clyde, and Blitz. Ryland and Billy made eye contact, and the smirk on Billy’s face turned Ryland’s stomach.
Instead, he scanned the rest of the circle, trying to remember which one Cairo was—that was the name he had drawn a week ago.
“Okay everyone, put your gifts in the middle of the circle. The Class Leader will go first, and then go around the circle one at a time,” Mrs. Ippy called from somewhere far away.
Billy was up in an instant and making his way toward the growing pile of presents.
“Hey! It’s not your turn!” shouted one of the girls—Emily, he thought.
“Hmm, I’m sure the Class Leader doesn’t mind, right?” he glared at Blitz, who quickly shook his head. So Billy sauntered up to the pile and dug around for a while before finally pulling out a package. He tore it open and revealed a box of chocolates. Ryland thought he heard Ophie gasp next to him, but she didn’t say anything.
They continued around the circle, and eventually Ophie tore open her gift to reveal a pack of orange gummy candies. She frowned, probably because she didn’t like orange flavor. She looked at Ryland, and he just shrugged. “I’ll swap with you if I get something you like.”
“Oh. So… you didn’t get me?”
“No, I got Cairo. I don’t know who got you.”
Then Billy’s perpetually whiny voice interrupted them. “C’mon Ryland, that’s enough chit-chat! You’re holding up everyone else.”
Something felt wrong as Ryland got up and walked to the center of the circle. He squirmed as he felt everyone’s eyes on him. The whole room seemed more quiet than it should have been. It felt like it took an eternity to dig through the pile of presents in search of one with his own name.
And there it was: a small box about the size of a pack of playing cards. And for a minute he thought that might be what they were. He went back to his seat and sat down with it, hoping that that would reduce the number or eyes on him, but it was no use. Everyone was staring at him, as if expecting something to happen. Finally, Ryland realized he couldn’t stall any longer, and he slowly began to tear open the package.
But it wasn’t a pack of cards at all.
It was a pack of cigarettes.
It only took Ryland a few seconds before he understood what they meant. He started to shake, staring uncontrollably at the pack of cigarettes in his hand until it fell to the floor with a crash, spilling some of its contents.
Ryland could feel Billy’s triumphant glare on him, and he didn’t dare look up.
“Ryland! Are those cigarettes? Hand them over!” Mrs. Ippy was glaring down at him with her hand outstretched. Ryland shoved the cigarettes back in then grabbed the box and tentatively raised it toward her until she snatched it away. “And what were you doing with these?”
“They’re not mine! Obviously someone gave it to me as their Secret Snowsquid gift. I don’t want them!”
Mrs. Ippy just kept glaring down at him with a suspicious look on her face. Desperate, Ryland looked around and saw Billy staring directly at him with a malicious grin. And he gave Ryland a small nod, as if saying Go on. But Ryland didn’t know what that was supposed to mean, and even if he had there was no way he was letting Billy get away with this.
“Like I said, the person who brought them in the classroom was whoever got me for Secret Snowsquid! It was B—”
“Fine, then I’ll go check the lists,” Mrs. Ippy said, spinning on her heel and always making it halfway back across the classroom before Ryland could finish. Ryland looked to Ophie for comfort, but she looked just as nervous as he was.
A moment later, Mrs. Ippy was back, this time holding a clipboard. All she said was, “Ophie, I’ll be accompanying you to the principal’s office. You’re being expelled.”
Ryland was barely able to put any words together as he stared at Ophie. “No! No, it was… wait… Ophie? It wasn’t you, right?”
But Ophie was already standing. “It’s okay Ryland, don’t fight it or we’ll just both end up expelled.”
“Wait… Ophie…”
“I’m sorry, Ryland. I hope I see you again.”
But he never did.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Captain groaned and slowly pulled his hand back from his head as the memory finished playing.
Of course, that night he had remembered Ophie’s gasp and had realized that the chocolates had been for him, which of course meant that Billy had swapped out the gifts—perhaps just the tags. But Ophie had already been expelled, and who would have believed him, anyway? Ophie had been right. Mrs. Ippy had already been suspicious enough of Ryland, and Billy hadn’t left any traceable evidence. Ryland probably would have been expelled, too, if he had tried anything.
But maybe that would have been for the best.
Captain pushed themself back up into an upright position and took a deep breath.
Tsuku’s gift exchange wouldn’t be like Ryland’s. She was surrounded by good friends and responsible adults. Tsuku may have a secret just like Ryland had, but maybe Captain could muster the optimism to believe that, unlike Ryland, Tsuku would be accepted.
Captain’s hand rested on the door handle. Yes. Everything would be okay. They truly believed it.
And they pushed the door open. A few strides, and they were back in the living room. It was still chaos, but the smiles on everyone’s faces reassured them. Especially Eight’s.
They sat down next to their husband, and Tsuku ran up to them almost immediately. “Look, Fufu! Look what Koi got me!”
Tsuku was bouncing around with such excited energy that Captain couldn’t discern the object in her hands until they reached out and held the corner to steady it. It was a sketchbook, and on the cover… a silhouette of an octopus.
“Oh… that’s great, Tsuku…” Captain tried to muster enthusiasm in their response, but they just couldn’t stop staring at the octopus emblazoned on the front.
“What is it?” Tsuku finally asked.
“Tsuku… does Koi know you’re an Octoling?”
Tsuku looked at him curiously, almost confused. “Yeah, of course! All of them do. They’ve known for a while.”
Captain looked around the room at everyone, beginning to question his original impressions of each of them. “And their parents…?”
Tsuku nodded. “As far as I can tell. It’s not really a big deal.”
Captain suddenly pulled in Tsuku for a tight hug, and they were holding back tears. “I’m so glad you found them. I’m… so happy for you, Koko.”
Tsuku started pulling back after a moment, and Captain realized that they might have hugged her for too long. But she still had a big smile on her face. “I love you, Fufu. Merry Squidmas!”
“I love you too. Merry Squidmas.”
They shared one more smile.
“Now go have fun with your friends!”
Captain watched them all for a few minutes, seeing René blush as Tsuku asked whether he liked the Tableturf cards she had gotten him, seeing KJ make a remark that they all laughed at, seeing Cody wow them by doing tricks with his new yo-yo, and seeing Tsuku wrap Koi up in another hug.
“You did this, you know,” Eight said, leaning into Captain. “I mean, Tsuku deserves some credit, and I guess I was there, too. But you made all this possible.”
Eight was right, wasn’t he? Nothing could ever be perfect and easy, but Tsuku was never going to have to endure the hardships that they had.
They had broken the cycle.
“Yeah. I did it.”

it's (not) fine (ゼロ ; zero ; cero)
Tumblr media
It's fine if you're not here. Either way, i'll always remember you. Hey, kei, say my name. It's not fine if you're not here.
pairing — Baji Keisuke x reader word count — 4.7k note — this is a spin-off of it's so cold. it can be read on its own, but some context might be missing. thanks for reading!
Tumblr media
It's fine.
i've convinced myself it is, at least. It's been quite some time since things started changing—since people started leaving. i've grown as used to it as i can so it'd be easier on Mikey. Whether it worked when Ken happened or not, i can't really tell. i think it might have. Seeing how things turned out with South, maybe it didn't. It doesn't really matter—it does, just not quite the way it's supposed to. When things are quiet like this, it feels like Mikey never even killed anyone in the first place. The same way he once killed Tora—though that was erased—and the same way i once killed Manjiro—though that was erased—and the same way he once killed South—though that.
It's quiet in here. Kanto Manji has grown so obnoxiously large that it's hardly quiet around me anymore. Mikey headed out earlier without a word, Haru in tow, and Koko's busy downstairs with an ong—Koko's just busy. i don't know what everyone else is doing. Commando unit, special attack unit, even Kakucho. Bullshit. The only special attack unit i ever cared for was kei and Tora. i like things better when they're like this; quiet and empty and peaceful. i'm not sure when i started to like silence so much.
It's quiet now, but it was never quiet around kei.
My sigh echoes in this emptiness. i've convinced myself it's fine while i try and find something that won't remind me of him. It seems difficult when i keep clinging onto him like this. The cross pendant engraves its shape on my palm the more i tighten my fist around it. i've always loved kei's sense of fashion, but this necklace suddenly seems horrendous. It's hard to believe the moon hanging in the sky is the same one that drifted by when we were together. Photographs are just pieces of paper and memories are nothing but dust, yet it all makes him resurface in my mind.
A big heart and a big smile and a big voice. Although the room is quiet, my head isn't. It plays in a timber gruff and too deep for a kid my age. Then again, it's been two years and he's no longer my age where he left. If anyone can stay young forever, it's definitely kei—in heart and spirit, of course, because physically he's sure to grow and open up that pet shop he's always wanted.
It plays. It's the ghost in the back of my head, playing, "Chifuyu's unhinged!"
The loud sound of his laughter rings through the air, somehow—but unsurprisingly—overpowering his roaring engine. i lean against the backrest and curl my fingers a little more securely around his precious Goki. Even if i have my own bike, kei's always been persuasive enough to make me hitch a ride with him. He's here, right in front of me, and i laugh alongside him. "I heard!" my cackles mimic his, "He's really got your back, huh?"
"That's putting it lightly." And it really is. Chifuyu's been with him for less than i have, but he knows how to make consistent choices. If there's anyone i trust to keep kei safe, it's definitely his new vice-captain. Back then, at least; now that i've stared at his death these many times, i should have known.
So i let my shoulders bounce in glee and amusement. "Better keep my hands off you, then." These little moments, when we're hanging out at the dojo, bare feet padding on the mats, chasing the moon so high in the sky; the blurred line between Toman meetings in the middle of the night and childhood friends bantering. "Or tell him to chill out," i snicker. i doubt Chifuyu would lay a hand on me.
In a fit of sheer stupidity, in typical kei fashion, he cranes his neck back and grins at me over his shoulder. "What, were you thinking 'bout putting me in my place?"
"kei!" i scramble to shake him by the shoulders and slap his attention back forward. "Eyes on the road, dipshit!" i catch a flash of the moon blooming in his fangs before he speeds down the road. And i give up. He lets me have the last word and i think just this is okay, so i let it go. i hold onto him tight until we arrive at Musashi Shrine.
When we park, it's a distance away from the torii gate, as per usual. This is where we part ways, because i don't think there's ever been a time when kei and i crossed to the sacred together. It's always meeting him after he's already far ahead, or not meeting him at all for a decade. i get off his bike and slap his back with enthusiasm. But kei catches me by the sleeve of my uniform before i can leave. He knows i need to—He knows i usually head up to wait for Mikey. He's always been persuasive enough.
Chifuyu's already idling by his own parked bike and kei drags me to chat him up for a little while. In his mind, a minute longer keeps me from sinking. i indulge him. Cracking jokes with these two is never dull; sharing a regular friendly conversation is always so peacefully mundane. It's loud and it's fleeting, but it's welcome. i do wonder what's taking Mikey so long. i haven't seen his Babu, so i'm guessing he's not here yet.
i only manage a wandering glance towards the torii gate before kei's voice pulls me away, "Wanna join us for some burgers after the meeting?" It's the way he says my given name that brings me back from the pressure on my shoulders. It's my name he says. It's not a mess of sounds in the shape of a brand.
"Yeah!" Then Chifuyu chimes in with that nickname Mikey passed onto everyone around me. It doesn't show on my face; it never has. "We should hang out!"
i chuckle at their mirroring beams. It's light-hearted. "Only if you're paying, kei."
Chifuyu again, with that nickname and an honorific far too formal. "That's what I'm here for! I wouldn't make my captains pay, right, Baji-san?"
i glare pointedly at Chifuyu's captain. "kei." My tone is accusatory enough to make him feign ignorance. kei averts his eyes from mine with a cheeky smile, palms and shoulders raised to plead not guilty. There's not a single timeline in which he's guilty. A snort slips, "i'd fuck you up, kei," and i glance at kei's unhinged vice-captain, "but i'd rather not get stri—"
"There you are!" comes Mikey's distinctive voice from behind me. He calls my nickname with familiarity. It can't bother me, not this early on in the game.
i instantly turn towards him. It's weird that i didn't hear his Babu pull up. Not that it matters, really. "Mikey!" i call back to him, beaming, waving for him to come closer before i head to him.
Mikey's looking around as he stops a few feet before me, Ken trailing behind. "Where's your bike?"
"Oh, i came with kei."
His eyes shift to kei for a brief moment, empty. Then he lets out a soft chuckle, his attention back on me, a simper on his lips as he shakes his head. "Dummy… Guess I gotta give you a ride back now."
"Sure." i smile back at him. Then i turn to look at kei and Chifuyu again, and i see the expressions on their faces. It's cute to find Chifuyu's disappointed i'm turning him down, but kei—It's only for a moment. "Ah, i'll—Maybe next time? i'll catch you guys later." i leave them with a small wave, because although kei's always persuasive, it's never enough to tear me away from Mikey permanently.
i feel lighter in my own skin and bones by the time i stand next to Mikey, feeling the ghost of a tug on my sleeve reminding me i'm allowed to exist outside of my self-imposed priorities. We cross the torii gates together; we transition from the mundane to the untouchable. i laugh and i enjoy my time alongside my friends. i don't quite see what kei does, or his reasoning for making me hitch rides that can't stop me. He thinks i won't run away this time, but i've always chosen Mikey over myself.
He knows that. And it's not something he needs to stop. It's fine, after all, it's always been like this. kei knows that.
kei or simply Baji Keisuke. For everyone, Baji—Baji-san, Baji-kun, Baji in admiration and in friendship and in disdain. For me, however, just kei. i never understood why Mikey chose Baji, too. i think about the way i addressed the people surrounding me sometimes. Tora for Kazutora, and Takashi's first name. Never that childish honorific for Ken, and even Pah was Haru before i realized i couldn't handle Haruchiyo's scars in my mind every time i talked to him. Even switching back and forth between Mikey and Manjiro, because i've never known who is who or who exists and who doesn't or who's real and who isn't. i could never curse Takemichi with Takemicchi. Koko—that wasn't a choice, but i think Koko is fine.
And then there was Baji Keisuke. Being with him since childhood, it only made sense i'd refer to him by his first name and so would he for me. Neither of us liked beating around the bush. It only made sense. We were close and it showed in our voices. That's how we grew up. Baji was short-lived, Keisuke sounds like mom when she scolds me, and Edward was stupid the same way Michael is and will always be. kei simply rolled off the tongue nicely.
i found solace in the way kei pronounced my given name—not some low-effort, jumbled, scrambled mess of hiragana that Mikey came up with to brand me like cattle. i chose to call him differently so i'd separate him from Mikey's possessions. Although i wasn't interested in seeing things beyond Mikey, i unconsciously tried to pull away from him by pulling into kei. Sometimes, it felt more like kei was trying to pull Mikey off my shoulders. There was always so much pulling, so much burning at the seams, but never any pushing. All he wanted was for me to wake up and realize, not startle me.
Because that's what kei always has been. His ripped shirts and his stylish choker. The slouch of his shoulders and the sparkle in his eyes. The sound of his loud voice, gruff and too deep for a kid my age, calling out from his bike so i'd hop on faster. Peppy and cheerful, with a big grin and an equally big heart, far too stupid and far too smart for his own good. Careful, watchful, a little too much in the know, and much too little into asking for help.
He knew i could bleed and that i'd give everything up for Mikey to live his life and that i was always ready to die. That's really all that kei's always been; standing tall, but looking small, like a mischievous little thing grabbing me by the wrist and dragging me along. Like he knew no matter how much he pulled, i'd always choose Mikey in the end. For worse, never for better. Like it's fine. For better, never for worse.
Another Toman meeting tonight, with the day growing late and the full moon rising in the sky. It's one of those nights, rare but not impossible, where Mikey is here earlier than me. i cross the torii gates on my own and the silence seems so loud. i'm not really used to things being quiet around me. i've always been surrounded by boisterous people. We're delinquents.
And kei takes pride in that; in his glimmering grin and his extreme volume. "Slow down, will ya?!" comes his distinctive voice from behind me. He calls my name with glee.
i stop without so much as taking another step away from him. It's not only his voice, but also knowing there's no one else but kei to use my given name with care. i wait for him to catch up to me, smiling at him climbing the stairs. "kei, hey."
His hands are attacking my hair before i can duck away. "I told you I'd pick you up. Why didn't you wait for me, dumbass?" Laughter bounces off his every sentence. We take a small break from all this shallow back-and-forth between Toman and our friendship. i exist outside of my chains. i exist with kei.
His assault on my scalp is relentless even after i swat my palms at his face. i scratch his cheek, hissing, "And i told you i have my own bike, dude."
"Then we going for a ride after this?"
"i'm more up for a race, how 'bout that?" i playfully knock my shoulder into his.
Where kei usually knocks me back, tonight he chooses to freeze on his tracks. i look back and down at him, finding his eyes gawking at me in disbelief. i raise a brow as he says, "You're actually free later?" Then i frown. i'm sure, i'm so sure i'll forever remember him and his words, trying to pull me back.
"Yeah?"
"What about Mikey?"
What about Mikey? It's my own naïveté the one that doesn't let me understand. "i… i don't know?" But i'll know soon enough. And kei won't be there for me to hide behind.
"Huh." It's short and he brushes it off his face before he lets on too much. He's always been one to take everything on his back. As if nothing else he'll ever hear could throw him off, kei resumes walking, shrugging his shoulders carefreely. "Since you're always following him, I thought, you know…" he trails off, like he sometimes realizes he actually doesn't know much at all.
i blink a few times to reorient myself. He's already climbing up the stairs in silence ahead of me. Although kei knows me, it seems my choices still elude him. It seems my choices elude me myself. i can't find the words to tell him that even if he's not Manjiro, i still love him to bits. If i can't explain it now, i'll be left all alone. But i don't say anything. i don't know if i can say anything. i hurry to catch up to him.
When he finds me heavy by his side again, kei snickers to himself, "Then I'll beat your ass." My name dances with the sound of his laughter. With the full moon hanging in the sky and shining in his pockets, he flashes me one of his boyish grins. i giggle for a moment before falling quiet in my thoughts once more.
What about Mikey?
i hear the door open and close behind me. kei's necklace makes its way back into my pocket, away from cold, prying eyes that might accuse me of abandonment. Not that i would ever leave Manjiro, but he sees the puzzle pieces in my hands and makes up his own image. He calls that nickname he gifted me, the one written with syllables out of order and chaos in his head.
i turn towards him to find him idly standing by the door. Speaking of silence, i guess it's because of him i've had to grown used to it. With my friends all gone, the loud and boisterous ones that would never shut up—like kei, of course—this quietude has become the norm. Maybe i've always liked silence and peace, but i didn't know any better until now.
"I'm hungry," is all Mikey says.
His eyes find mine. i'm getting tired of everything i'm supposed to call mine. All my friends and my allies and even Mikey. Dark gaze and long hair—like kei, but he's not kei, and kei will eternally remain in my sight, grinning forever, unfading. My friend. i'm sick of trying to find a single thought that will make sense. i sigh, because the choices i've made force me to reach my hands out to Mikey.
It's vague, but i brush his hair off his face, suggesting, "Take-out soba?" i don't dare specify and let him know i've been thinking a little too much.
"I just want dessert."
"Okay."
i have to hold my stare for a little longer than i actually should. Manjiro blurs in and out of sight the more i look at him. He's curiously staring back, probably wondering why i'm taking so long to order ice-cream for the both of us. Of course. i pull my hands away, searching in my pockets for my phone. All i find is a cross pendant. i'm still hungry for yakisoba.
That's the thing—that's always been the thing. Things i didn't want to see or i simply couldn't pay attention to because i was too busy making sure Mikey wouldn't derail. Things kei tried to pry off my back so many times by making me hitch rides i didn't need. Where Mikey unknowingly—or knowingly?—forces me to loosen my grip on my own identity, kei comes to help me wrap my fingers and close my fists tight around it again. It's an offer and it's never imposed; i have my choices when it comes to kei.
And it's fine, because i choose to go back to Manjiro every time. So i order ice-cream and take-out yakisoba.
i stand nearly in shock next to Toman's president. kei came, disrupted the meeting, socked Takemichi, and left while declaring himself an enemy to us—to me. He's leaving. Right now, as Kisaki fixes his glasses to also punch Takemichi, kei is leaving. Right now, as Takashi grumbles to himself, kei is leaving. Right now, as Manjiro does nothing but sulk, kei is leaving.
He's leaving. He's gone.
i stare and stare and stare at the empty spot beside Chifuyu. Right now, as i don't move a single muscle, kei is leaving. It feels like an eternity later when i finally snap out of my own pity party. Mikey's fingers barely brush my wrist in a futile attempt to keep me in place. kei's already left, he doesn't want another one of his friends to abandon him for the enemy. He knows better than that.
i would never leave him. kei would never leave him.
(kei, right now, is leaving.)
i would never betray him. kei would never betray him.
(kei was there when Shin was killed.)
My feet are almost floating down the stairs, skipping steps and struggling not to stumble stupidly until i crash at the torii gates. kei comes into sight, a few feet before crossing back onto the mundane without me. He throws a glance over his shoulder when he hears me catching my breath behind him. It's between choking gasps for air that i manage to call out to him, "kei." Is it in admiration or in friendship or in disdain? It's in my voice. "Why are you doing this?" It's in fear.
"Hah?" he drawls. He turns to face me fully. The moon blooms in his smirk. "I'm bored of playing kids' games."
i take a step closer. "Dude, don't lie to me." Kids' games is all we've been playing—kids' games is all we know how to play. i'll let him lie to anyone else. i don't care if he's a liar or a cheater or a fraud, as long as he doesn't lie to me.
"Since when do you care about anything that isn't Mikey?"
"i don't." It makes me wonder how any of this manages to get under my skin. i don't think i could handle this ending for me to begin. Where do i begin?
"Then fuck off," kei snarls like he hates me, like i'm stupid, "I don't have time for a lap dog like you." The insult doesn't hurt because it's true—even if it really, really is true—it hurts because he's lying to me. It hurts because i keep ignoring all the signs to turn myself around. It hurts because kei is right in front of me, offering me a helping hand for the umpteenth time since we met as kids.
i look at it. It's not there, but i look at it. There's blood on his palm from the other two times i've seen him die. i hesitate when i brush my fingers against his. "kei, how are you doing this?" i force eye contact on him. He questions me loudly. He's a little too smart and a little too stupid. "How can you just turn your back on him? How do i do that?"
"You're lost." There it is; my name, myself, my own person.
i tightly grasp his hand and my righteous identity. Away from the Sanos and their chains. Away from the intoxicating charm that sinks me deeper and deeper into this hole. "Take me with you." i hold onto the ghost of kei's hand and try wiggling myself out of Manjiro's grip.
It flashes across his eyes for a brief moment, because finally, finally all his individual efforts to rip my voice from inside of me and set me free are paying off. All i need to do is let go of Mikey. All kei needs to do is snatch my hand. i see his feet stutter in their own steps and how his fingers twitch by his side and how he's psyching himself up to reach out for me.
And i shrink back. i choose Manjiro again. "No, you're right," i sigh, laughing to myself like i'm not cutting down all the warning signs kei's been leaving for me, "That'll just cause more problems." Now i'll never get to him—not past the torii gates and certainly not past death. "Take care of Tora for me."
kei scans me up and down one last time. i don't know if it's pity, resentment, or even anger the emotion shining in his gaze. He turns his back on me with a single scoff that he has to force out of his throat. Of course i trust him to tear all of my stitches off one by one, of course i trust him to remove this weight off my shoulders. It's Mikey the one i don't trust.
It's fine, really. Even if i didn't have the words back then, kei will forever be here by my side. In spirit and in heart and leaning against the backrest of his Goki. If it has to be like this, i think it's fine. i'll never know more than this and i'll live with it. How differently would things have turned out if i had followed kei out of the shrine? Would Mikey's grip on me have worsened? Or would it have vanished completely? His stance on traitors has never been clear, especially when he ticks back and forth like a metronome with a distorted tempo. Hypotheticals are useless. i can hide behind kei all i want for the rest of my life, but i can't run away from Manjiro.
kei's not here anymore for me to find solace in, though. He hasn't been here for the past two years. It's not like he's gone forever, of course—after all, death is only temporary, so i'm sure at some point, he's bound to come back. He's come back every time. He'll extend his hand out to me and drag me along again in typical kei fashion. He'll make an effort to not have me sink and i'll listen this time. i will listen. i swear i will. He'll let me know when it's all said and done, give me a ride home, raid my fridge even.
It's alright, it's okay, it's fine. i've known it all along. In the middle of fighting, in the middle of a kids' game, things take a turn for the worse and steal the glow of the moon from kei's smile. Things don't make sense. Next to Mikey, it's all chaos, but i'm not next to Mikey in this junkyard, because he's too busy wanting to kill Tora. i fight my own fight against Valhalla members, and i figure that's the difference between me and Manjiro. i don't want to fight my friends; i don't want to fight Tora; i don't want to fight kei.
Breaking Tora won't do any of us any good. It won't bring Shin back, it will put murder in Mikey's hands, and we'll be losing a friend we only just managed to get back. We're here to get kei back, not to push Tora farther away. i watch it all happen, gasping for air and choking on my own bloodied nose. kei collapses, someone—Takemichi? Or is it Chifuyu?—mentions a stab wound, there's blood but it's not inside kei, and Manjiro.
Murder. Murder. Murder. Murder. i've seen this already. Manjiro's killed Tora twice before. kei. kei has died twice before, in timelines Takemichi didn't know about yet. Mikey is bashing Tora's face in with just one of his fists. Honestly, it doesn't really matter. Whatever happens here, Mikey will become a murderer anyway two years from now when he doesn't bother holding back against South.
But kei. Will kei come back?
i mean, of course he will. It's kei, after all. kei knows his weaknesses and his strengths; kei knows death can't be permanent, especially not for him. He'll come back, because he's Baji Keisuke—because he's kei. And i wish i could blame him and tell him he's wrong when he chooses Tora over himself and over Chifuyu and over everyone and over me. He chooses Tora the same way i'm always choosing Mikey, so i should have seen this coming. But he's wrong. But it's his choice. But he's kei, and kei doesn't die—not forever, at least.
i'm far away and on my own and silent as i watch him die. i'm far away but i can hear the way he says my name and how awfully dissonant it rings next to Mikey's when he lists all of our friends. He swears, right there, on his deathbed, that we're all his treasure and he wanted to protect us. He won't always be there for me to hide behind, will he? He wanted to protect me. He—He wanted to—kei wanted to. He wanted to. kei really wanted to.
kei. kei is dead, isn't he?
He died in Chifuyu's arms. The last word out of his mouth was a name and it was not mine. He died. kei died. kei is dead. kei's not here anymore, he's all but the ghost in the back of my head, playing, "Chifuyu's unhinged!" so i can hear him laugh again. Although i've convinced myself it's fine, i'm starting to think it's not. Maybe, just maybe.
i look at Manjiro.
It's not fine.

Boboiboy has a praised knk, and I have proof
Tumblr media
When fang call himself a 'captain' (which was not a lie) gopal straight up got pissed while BBB was just curious on why he's the captain
Tumblr media
Once Fang tell out his reasoning, gopal was still inconvenience by him
Tumblr media
BBB however, was satisfied with that and immediately pointed out a way to help his 'captain' (which I found incredibly sweet)
what happen after? Fang praised him, 'well done, ensign'
And what was his reaction? Is it,Mad? Upset? Blank?
Tumblr media
This, his reaction was him being all shy and sweet after that one. single. praise. that is probably a joking tease. What happen after?
'Thanks, captain'
He literally thanks him for that one Praise. Not by his name, but by his new found rank, captain. This probably mean that in some point in life BBB crave for a little validation in some people that has higher rank than him .
If he get all shy like that from Fang his friend from preschool, imagine if it was from people with higher rank. (Laksamana Tarung, Commander Koko Ci, Kapten Kaizo, ect)
So in conclusion, Boboiboy has a praised kink and there's no changing in my mind

I gooofed
And lost the ask
So
Reader goes back in time and meets dad Mikey
Fem reader, female reader, angst
🌑🌒🌓🌔🌕🌖🌗🌘🌑🌒🌓🌔🌕🌖🌗🌘🌑
(name) grunted in pain as she sat up, looking around to figure out where she was... She was in Shibuya but... Not her Shibuya.
Wandering around, she recognized some places but others... They had been shut down for a few years.... "Oh sorry..."(name) looked to see the black eyes of her dad but he looked younger.
He was a teenager.
Mikey looked bored as he stared at the teen who looked at him almost horrified and with familiarity "no problem" Mikey said simply before walking away with Draken, the young lady reeling as she processed what happened.
That was her dad.
He looked... Healthy.
And happy.
That wasn't the Mikey Sano, president of Bonten, that was Mikey Sano Leader of Toman "oh fuck" (name) tried not to freak out as she opened her purse and thankfully had cash, her uncle Koko often the one to give her allowances as she couldn't exactly get a job "this should do me till I figure something out" (name) said softly, panic seeping in her voice.
Turns out avoiding Mikey was harder than she thought, she just wanted to get to her time no hassle but clearly that wasn't happening, the blond teen and her constantly bumping into one another and she looked more and more suspicious each time.
Mikey grew suspicious of her.
Especially after seeing her fight when he had a few captains collect her.
She fought like him.... She even looked kind of like him.
"I'm not a spy, I'm just trying to get home" she said stressed out, she didn't know what to do and she genuinely was terrified of being trapped in the past, alone with no one.
"What do you mean?" Draken asked with a raised eyebrow "you guys wouldn't believe me, I barely believe it"
"Try us"
"I'm from the future"
Everyone looked surprised, takemichi just looked wide eyed.
"What a load of shit" Baji said with a glare and (name) sighed "I wish I was joking but I'm not, I'm stuck here and I need to get out" she opened her purse and pulled out her phone, the newest model in her time "this is a cellphone from my time"
"I just want to go home"
The gang members saw the teen practically breakdown, the build up of stress far too much and she had enough, it was terrifying and seeing her dad healthy and happy was like a slap to the face.
He was a lifeless corpse with her.
"Do you have a place to stay?" Takemichi asked and (name) nodded "my uncle gave me money before I ended up here, I was using it to stay in a small hotel room till I figured things out"
(Name) looked down as everyone stared at her "you can stay with me" takemichi said simply and (name) looked shocked "really?"
"Yeah, if it makes you feel safer I can have my girlfriend stay as well"
"Thank you..."
It wasn't till they got home that takemichi smiled at her sadly "sorry, I didn't mean to bring you here"
"What--" a pat on the shoulder and (name) woke up in her livingroom, alone.
And on the news was takemichi holding onto her dad's hand as they hung over a building.

Not the damn T-shirt
Tumblr media
Short reflection that Inupi did when joining what would have become the Second Generation of Toman.
 ✦✧✦✧✦✧✦✧ ✦✧✦✧ ✦✧✦✧ ✦✧✦✧ ✦✧✦✧
Seishu smiled thinking of Koko and the last time they saw each other, and how they would have met again for sure. His thoughts were rudely interrupted by Matsuno, showing him the tackiest and most tasteless T-shirt he has ever seen. An insult to both ethics and aesthetics. And that apparently was their new uniform. The only acceptable response to that crazy affirmation was to spit on it.
🩵 Inukoko/Kokonui (implied) 🐈‍⬛ Rating: Teen And Up  ❄️ Audiences Words: 2512 🐶 Written for Inupi's week on Twitter (@/inuiseishuweek)      Day 1: ❆Thousand Winter❆
More under the cut and on  Ao3
Joining Hanagaki’s new team was as natural as breathing; this is exactly what Seishu was waiting for.
After Koko showed up only a month or so before with an injured Hanagaki on his back and so much sadness and loneliness on his face, Seishu immediately made the decision to help him, because it was clear that, as Koko always did, he was trying to do everything on his own, without realizing that he was hurting himself in the process.
Or, more probable, Koko realized it very well, but had already decided long ago that he had to atone for something that wasn’t his fault and for how many times Seishu tried to talk to him, Koko was stubborn when he wanted to, especially in making his own life miserable.
But that had to come to an end, and it was decided the moment Seishu saw him in the rain that fateful day.
Therefore, joining Hanagaki was the fastest way to reach Koko. His intention to help Hanagaki was genuine, it was also thanks to him that Seishu decided to leave forever the underworld, trying to live a more honest and healthy life.
It was not easy at the beginning, but he was thankful that all of the former Toman members, that, for some reason or another, welcomed him like one of them. In the end, they all had lost important people after Tenjiku, probably different kinds of mourning brought them together. And Hanagaki, even if sometimes looked and acted like a different person, was always the same kid at heart, and helped him to become part of the group. He owned him.
On the other hand, Seishu had a precise plan in mind: bringing Koko back. And he wanted to clarify this thing to Hanagaki sooner or later, as a sign of respect toward his new captain. But he wasn’t worried, he opened up to Hanagaki more than two years before, after being kidnapped by Sanzu and Mucho, and he immediately understood the situation with Koko. Hanagaki probably already knew why he was so eager to join the gang.
Seishu smiled thinking of Koko and the last time they saw each other, and how they would have met again for sure.
His thoughts were rudely interrupted by Matsuno, showing him the tackiest and tasteless T-shirt he has ever seen. An insult to both ethics and aesthetics. And that apparently was their new uniform. The only acceptable response to that crazy affirmation was to spit on it.
“You don’t understand Inupi, this is vital for our gang!”
“That’s the opposite of vital, you call yourself a delinquent wearing that thing?”
“What’s wrong with this uniform? It’s perfect! I designed it myself, even the logo”
“I see nothing but problems, in every single word you just said”
“G-guys please…” Takemichi stood between them, trying to calm Inui and trying to reason with Chifuyu, while Hakkai was sweating cold.
“Chifuyu, we really appreciate the effort you did with the new uniform…”
Chifuyu looked so smug after what he perceived as praise from Takemichi, while the others stared at him in various stages of disbelief (mostly Hakkai) and straight out disgust (mostly Inui).
“But Inupi-kun is just making a constructive criticism, I’m sure we can find a middle ground”
At that point Takemichi was on the verge of tears, looking at Inui begging for mercy with his eyes. Hanagaki was clearly unhappy with the uniform situation, but it was true it was not their biggest problem. Inui decided, mostly for Takemichi’s sake, to momentarily indulge Matsuno and his stupid T-shirt.
“Well, I think the uniform is fine the ways it is, but sure, we can always add-”
“No, please, Chifuyu, it’s-” Hakkai was trying to stop Chifuyu’s stream of thoughts, the whole concept of their so called uniform was already bad enough. “I mean, Inupi, it’s- well” Hakkai looked Inupi for help, desperation in his eyes at the mere thought to wear the uniform but trying to find a compromise.
Inui sighted. This is getting ridiculous.
“Fine, whatever, we’ll think about the uniform later, we have more important things to do”. Takemichi and Hakkai breathed a sigh of relief.
“Excellent! In the meanwhile, please wear the uniform Inupi”
Chifuyu’s eyes were sparkling when he offered him his T-shirt the second time. Takemichi, who in the meantime walked behind Chifuyu, begged Inui to please don’t question it again. Lip-reading, Inui got that Takemichi was reassuring him that they’d found another uniform but for the sake of their meeting to please accept the T-shirt.
With another deep sight, Inui in the end accepted the “uniform” from Chifuyu, as happy as a kid on Christmas. Inui was thankful there were no mirrors in the break room of D&D.
“You really look goo-”
“Not a word Matsuno. Not. A. Word.”
Defeated, Seishu sat down next to Hakkai, while Chifuyu and Takemichi kept talking or better, Chifuyu was excited talking about possible upgrades for their uniform, while Takemichi tried to change topic.
“You’ve been so brave, Inupi, thank you for trying” Hakkai patted Inui’s shoulder, genuinely impressed and grateful to his friend.
“Mm, whatever, we’ll find a way to get rid of this shit, besides we’re not here to play, we have important things to do”
Hakkai looked at him, thoughtfully. In the two and a half years since Tenjiku, they actually became friends, even with Yuzuha, and given his past as a BLACK DRAGON under Taiju, Inui never expected to bond for real with the younger Shiba siblings. They had all the reason to distrust him and sure as hell, after Tenjiku, Inui wasn’t in the mood to play family or make friends. While he could live without BLACK DRAGON, having found in Toman the kind of gang Shinichiro envisioned, he felt terribly lonely without Koko.
They had always been together, for better or worse, and Seishu, while always dreaded the idea that Koko would get tired of him sooner or later, that one day his money obsession would have eaten him alive, in his subconscious, he never really imagined a life without Koko. And yet, that moment arrived anyway. It didn’t pass a day without Seishu thinking what he could have done to prevent it, but then he reminded himself that the past couldn’t be changed, but now he could change the future.
And so slowly but surely, with Hanagaki and everyone else’s help, Inui started his new life. Surprisingly, without the pressure of Taiju’s gang, it turned out Hakkai, Yuzuha and Inui actually got along pretty well. Hakkai just had the power to make other people take care of him and no one, Inui included, was immune. And Yuzuha just cared for her little brother, so if people were nice with him, for her it was enough. They arrived to even joke sometimes about the past, a kind of fucked up humor that only broken people trying to fix themselves could appreciated.
For example, it wasn’t unusual for Hakkai, the ultimate spoiled brat, to annoy people with silly requests, like “hey, let me taste your ice cream!” and while Seishu didn’t say no, in exchange he challenged him to face Taiju or something like that. Which of course didn’t happen and Hakkai always got what he wanted anyway, but it was their way to bond. Even Yuzuha started to play this little game with Hakkai, just to annoy him.
“It must have not been easy for you, when Kokonoi showed up here, and now managing this place alone.” Hakkai added, sympathetic.
“There’s nothing else I can do, I have to go on”
“So!” Takemichi exclaimed, while he and Chifuyu was sitting at the table with Inui and Hakkai.
“Now we need an advisor and someone with better taste”
“Totally agree” Hakkai and Inui answered, dead serious, ignoring Chifuyu’s confused expression.
***
The next person the newborn gang tried to scout was Takashi Mitsuya. One of Toman’s founders, one of Mikey’s best friends before everything went to ruin and someone that actually knew about style and fashion.
Of course everyone was absolutely devastated by Draken’s sudden death, but Mitsuya looked like the ghost of himself. He knew there was a special bond between Draken and Mitsuya, he understood it immediately when Mitsuya hung around the shop, sometimes alone, other times followed by his little tribe composed by his little sisters Mana and Luna, Hakkai obviously, and sometimes Yuzuha. But probably there was something, at least on Mitsuya’s side, that has been able to hide for all that time.
At Draken’s funeral, Inupi felt empty and dissociated, like he felt at every funeral he went to in his life. Probably because the first funeral of his life was Akane’s and he felt he had no right to be there while she was gone. He couldn’t believe it, he didn’t want to believe it. He started crying only when Koko, tears already streaming down his face, held his hand.
During Shinichiro’s funeral, he was filled with grief and rage, Koko by his side anyway, even if he never liked the former boss of the original BLACK DRAGON formation. At Emma’s funeral, he felt both incredibly out of place and as if the karma, the universe or whatever, was teaching him a lesson through someone else. He understood how Mikey felt, losing a sister in such a cruel way. And while their pain was different, he understood Draken, unable to voice his feelings for Emma. And how now it was too late. In a different way, Inupi realized it was too late for him as well.
At Draken’s funeral, he thought that, as always, life was so unfair, thought that once again a good person that was trying his best was killed for no reason. Another family was broken because Draken had a father, maybe not a biological one, but that man raised him as a son and now he was alone, the girls of the brothel had found a friend in him, a confidant sometimes, and Toman’s people, or what was left of it, were all his brothers.
Seishu honestly didn’t expect people to pay attention to him. Sure he was Draken’s business partner and friend, but the same people that had known him for way longer than Seishu, showed him a warmth he honestly would have never expected. Everyone mourns differently, he knew it well by experience; but for probably the first time, he felt he was allowed to mourn with all the others, that he had this right, for how depressing it was.
He tried to reach Mitsuya after the funeral but it was clear the other young man wasn’t in the mood to talk. Seishu respected that and that’s why he didn’t know if it was a good idea to go to his place like that. But Hakkai assured it was okay, so the four of them got in Seishu's car.
Hakkai and Chifuyu were talking heatedly in the back seat (probably about a shojo manga, if Seishu understood correctly) while Seishu paid attention to the road, their chatting just a white noise.
“Inupi-kun?”
Takemichi’s voice caught his attention.
“I wanted to thank you again for joining us. I realize it’s not the best moment, with the shop and everything, that’s why I really appreciate it”
“I told you already Hanagaki, no need to thank me. I owe you, I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you, if you didn’t show me there were other ways”
Now or never.
“But there’s one thing I want to make clear: I have my own personal reasons why I’m joining you, I don’t want to pass as this selfless person when clearly I’m not”
“Well, then I guess we’re all being selfish here, our goal is to defeat Mikey and his gang to save him from this path he chose that… won’t have a good ending”
Seishu looked at Takemichi out of the corner of his eye. It was almost as if Hanagaki was recalling something.
“Mikey did so much for me, for all his friends, I can’t leave him alone like this”
“And Koko-kun is right there at Mikey’s side, I understand you just want to try to save someone you lov- I mean, you care about.”
Seishu didn’t dare to look at Takemichi, both because he was driving and because he was probably blushing. He never really openly talked about his real feelings for Koko, but never denied how important he has always been for him either. Probably it would have been okay talking about it freely? At least with Hanagaki and other trusted friends? Either way, that wasn't the right moment, the important thing was that Hanagaki understood and not only accepted the situation, even encouraged him.
“Don’t worry Inupi-kun, I still don’t know how, but we will also save Koko-kun. One way or another.”
Hanagaki’s determined tone and expression gave Seishu hope, and the courage he needed to change the situation.
“Thank you Hanagaki, it means a lot for me”
“Don’t even say it. Also, thank you for the t-shirt” he whispered, hoping that Chifuyu, who was still talking with Hakkai, didn’t notice. “It’s temporary, we cannot show ourselves like that in front of the strongest gang of the country, but I don’t know how to stop Chifuyu, he’s just so stubborn.”
“I’m sure Mitsuya will save us all”
“I’m honestly counting on that”.
***
At first Mitsuya declined Takemichi’s offer. He did it to honor Draken’s memory and the promise to become a stylist. Seishu respected that. But then the former captain of the second division changed his mind, realizing that if a friend was gone forever, maybe he could do something to save another that was still there.
And so the five of them were reunited to reorganize the team. Chifuyu willingly left the advisor position to Mitsuya who, as first decision, opted to redesign the gang uniform, to the delight of everyone. Hakkai and Takemichi were glad they didn’t have to face the topic again with a very surprised Chifuyu.
What a bunch of idiots. he thought, not without affection. After the group separated, everyone making their way home, Seishu approached the gang’s new member.
“Hey, Mitsuya? Your next bike checkup is on me”
“What? No, absolutely not, D&D is a new business, you need every cent you can earn!”
“It’s on me, it’s not negotiable, you saved us from a terrible faith.”
“I don’t really-”
Seishu pointed at the very questionable t-shirt he was wearing.
“Oh that. Yeah, Hakkai told me.”
The T-shirt thing was honestly embarrassing and Seishu was glad they were finally over it, but he was more excited over the gang starting to grow. He was glad in the meanwhile also Pah, Peh and the Kawata twins decided to join them.
Eventually, the second generation of Toman would have faced Kanto Manji. He knew Koko was stubborn but he was as well, especially now that he was sure Koko needed help. Riding his bike back to his shop, he knew that this time, he would have brought Koko back.

Wait is your four the captain? How did that happen?
YES! YES!! I GOT SOMEONE TO ASK ABOUT IT! I WIN!!!!
CLEARS THROAT. OKAY OKAY OKAY IVE HAD THIS ROTATING IN MY HEAD FOR A HOT FUCKN MINUTE AND ILL TRY MY BEST TO EXPLAIN IT IN A WAY THAT MAKES SENSE
OKAY. LETS REWIND ALL THE WAY BACK TO OCTO EXPANSION!!!
Tumblr media
so! octo expansion goes all normally, we have our agent 8 fighting through the entire structure to escape, agent 3 gets brainwashed, they have to fight, yadda yadda. you probably know how it goes by now. But here's the thing.
what if i went ahead and changed a tiny thing. just the teensiest detail.
what if instead of spamming splashdowns, tartar decides to use one big fuck off booyah bomb.
Tumblr media
"but, didn't booyah bomb come out after octo expansion?"
yes. yes it did. and that's why i chose booyah bomb specifically.
tartar whipped out the idea to use a booyah bomb from some prototypes it found out about after abducting god-knows-who, and used it despite its unstable build. No one, at that moment, knew whatever that was, what it did, how dangerous it was, or anything of the sort. This was some sort of last hurrah, as it knew that this was its last shot at stopping this failure from escaping the facility. And so it exerted Agent 3 into giving it everything he's got. Quite literally, even! It pushed him so hard, he too became unstable while trying to mantain and boost the energy ball.
The Booyah Bomb is thrown with as much power as Tartar could muster out of that creature, pretty much covering most of the arena. Once the ink settles, and Agent 8 gathers his senses, he looks around. Agent 3 is nowhere to be seen.
Tumblr media
at no point in canon is sanitized agent 3 properly splatted throughout the fight — you only break their shield, they superjump back to their platform, and you eventually knock them out. you never splat them. so who's to say that, just like agent 8 during the ascent, they don't have a respawn anchor?
That's what I decided to play with here. Agent 3 is splatted with no respawn anchor. Agent 3 is dead.
The rest of octo expansion plays as normal, only that there's no passed out Agent 3 waiting at the helicopter.
Starting from here, Agent 8 becomes affiliated with the NSS through Cuttlefish after breaking the news, feeling like he needs to make it up for the loss they suffered as he feels responsible for it. He grows closer with Agent 4, and eventually they become closer friends, even staying at her place after she invited him once their friendship was more developed. This paragraph is mostly to explain how they know each other and how their friendship started, also explaining why my Agent 8 gives OtH Agent 4's number instead of Cuttlefish.
Okay! Now, back to the point of this ask. I actually had a bit of this typed out in a server I'm in!
Tumblr media
[Agent 4] didn't really have a choice when it came to becoming Captain, being the fifth longest-standing member of the NSS after craig, the squisters and agent 3. craig was retiring, the squid sisters were still busy with their inkopolis celebrity scene, and [Agent 3] was dead. so she was the next best option.
she didnt really ask for this in the first place, and yet she accepted out of hopes of being acknowledged. When she was just an agent, the rest of the team didn't keep in touch with her much (except for Agent 8) after the events of OE, and at one point even stopped being called for whenever Callie got the shades on again. Whenever she patrolled, she did it without any previous call, and was rarely acknowledged by the others. She still kept visiting the canyon whenever she could after everyone else had moved on.
even after becoming the "captain", the others didnt usually reach out to her for assistance, and instead tended to act on their own. they never really took her as captain, rarely listening to her. so obviously this whole mess made her feel like absolute dogshit, questioning why she even decided to go through with this.
that title was meant for [Agent 3]. not for her. he was the one that came before her, and was better than her in so many ways. at least that's what the others kept repeating around her.

as much of a punch in the gut being constantly compared to someone else was, she kept pushing to try and make herself known, separate from the other's achievements. which is why she ended up accepting marina's request.

Chifuyu Birthday Thread Fic [12.19]
I wrote a quick Chifuyu birthday fic (slight bajifuyu) and originally posted it on twitter, but I'll share it here as well!! This was the only one I posted on time haha...
* How every character would react on Chifuyu’s birthday *
Baji casually asks Chifuyu what he wants for his birthday, fully prepared to give the blond anything he wants under the pretense of a gift. Unexpectedly, Chifuyu laughs and says something close to impossible, “Let me be Captain for a day then, Baji-san!”
Ryusei overhears and says, “Are you sure it’s just his position you want, Chifuyu?” He continues on even as Chifuyu looks flustered, “Don’t you want his last name too? It’s your birthday, you could ask for anything right now, you know.”
Takemichi interrupts them by bringing in the cake, saving Chifuyu from having to answer and any more embarrassment. “Hey, stop that! Don’t tease him on his birthday!” Defends his best friend, reliably coming to his rescue.
Kazutora picks up the knife, fully intent on helping them cut the birthday cake. But before the blade even touches the frosting, Chifuyu is nervously easing it out of his hand. “I’ll take care of it, Kazutora,” says the blond, carefully sitting between him and Baji.
Mikey rifles through his pockets, finally pulling out a dorayaki as a last minute birthday gift. He hands it over to Chifuyu and confidently says, “Baji said these were your favorites.” He knows they’re not, but Chifuyu can’t call him out or speak against Baji’s words publicly.
Draken watches as Chifuyu accepts Mikey’s lie and dorayaki. But he also didn’t remember a gift himself so he says, “That’s from both of us,” and then clamps a heavy hand on Chifuyu’s shoulder as he wishes him a happy birthday and to hopefully let this slide.
Mitsuya was the one in charge of the birthday card, which he hands over to Chifuyu with a warm smile. “They told me you’d like a design with your cat on it.” He says, showing the front of the card with an illustration of Peke J.
Hakkai says, “Chifuyu, if you ever decide to start up Thousand Winters again - let’s use this design ok? Taka-chan worked really hard on making it actually look good for you.”
Smiley places a stack of instant peyoung yakisoba in front of Chifuyu and scoffs. “I really can’t believe you guys go through these instant noodle stuff. Maybe take some time to appreciate the real thing, yeah?”
Angry points to one of the nutrition labels on the back. “There’s a lot of sodium in these, Chifuyu,” he gently chides, tapping at the percentages. “Once in a while is fine. But don’t make it a habit.” He furrows his eyebrows. “It’s your birthday so it’s ok.”
Pah gives Chifuyu a hard time and an earful for his birthday. Peh gives Chifuyu a reason to be grateful that’s all he was given from the Third Division pair.
Koko carelessly waves a stack of cash in the air, then hands it over so suddenly that Chifuyu almost gets slapped in the face. “Here’s one thousand cold, just like your name,” he smirks. It’s actually a very small amount of money coming from their local benefactor.
Inui casually hands over a jewelry box, “This one’s technically funded by Koko, too.” He chuckles, then motions to the earring Chifuyu is wearing, “You can’t do much with the cash, so your real gift is getting iced out to match your name.”
Sasaki, Yoshida, and Takeuchi have recently graduated from being Chifuyu’s loyal followers to brand new official members of Toman - just in time to witness all of Chifuyu’s birthday antics, such as Baji reluctantly letting Chifuyu be “Captain” of the First Division for a day.

i've already seen the leak of the new tokyo revengers chapter and oh my god *rambles*
spoilers under the cut for tokyo revengers chapter 277
i honestly don't care what others think, but i'm actually fine with the ending even if it's like.. cliché and maybe a bit rushed with the whole "power of friendship trope" in it
ugh, i remember crying my eyes out in the middle of the night whenever someone died in the previous chapters i'm reading, and i'm just so just happy that like, the whole war, or like fighting, is over and everyone is getting the happy ending they deserve :(
sure some details have gotten overlooked and some stuff could have been written better, but no writing is ever perfect, and that's what it makes it perfect, and again, i'm just really happy especially after seeing the positions of characters in their respective divisions under toman—especially the way sanzu and has senju as his vice captain just absolutely warms my heart HFHDJS as well as seeing izana and kakucho together in a division.
ken wakui thank you for the unintentional but best one day late advanced birthday gift lol
(p.s. ok but if that wedding scene leak turns out to be koko and akane or hina and kisaki somehow ??? i'm taking back everything i said about how i'm happy with the ending. a drakemma, takehina, or even a pah and his girlfriend's wedding are the only valid ones—to me at least 🫂)

Tokyo Revengers S3EP4
aka: comrade swap
Ah, so scoping out the traitors and punishing them is the special role Chifuyu was talking about with Mucho and fifth division.
Did the OP get some minor changes or am losing my mind? …Oh, nope! It definitely did! That shot of Tenjiku is new! Even that fade to black when Emma smiles.. oh no.
They show Koko and Inui joining different sides yet remove Koko, Mucho and Sanzu from that other group shot of Tenjiku for some reason even though they were shown there previously.
Damn, Emma really do be looking like her mom.
I was wondering if Izana went to a foster home from the letters last ep.. only reason I doubt it was because of that one bit in the ED where it looks like he’s in a cell of some sort. Unless he was just lying to young Emma about going to a foster home to make her feel better.. I dunno. It's probably a lie.
Shit, you had history with Izana too, Inui?
OH!! DUH, the damn white jacket he had from that one flashback last season! That was a Black Dragon uniform and I vaguely remember him asking Koko what happened to the gang once he was released from juvie.. now it’s all coming back to me.
Oohh boy, I kinda love Izana with that long hair style he’s got going on in that quick flashback a bit better though.
“I’m one of the founding members of Tenjiku.” And I honestly would’ve been so very surprised about that had the OP not spoiled it so heavily.
“Now that I think about it, he was the only captain who wasn’t a victim of Tenjiku’s surprise attack.” Okay, well, I’m slow in realizing that.. completely true.
Mucho’s loyal, I’ll give him that much.
It ain’t far how pretty Koko looks even when all beat up.
Damn, so Koko joins Tenjiku to spare Inui and Takemichi’s lives? All because Izana wants to use his spectacular ability of making money?
“Us members of S-62 Generation are now 18. We’re not going to mess around with kiddie stuff like biker gangs.” A whole lot of them look way older than 18, just saying.
Nice speech from Takemichi for standing up for Koko but I gotta feeling it all that courage ain’t gonna help.
Oh? Inui remembered Shinichiro? He knew him?
Hey if Takemichi can survive a brawl with Taiju, then he can last a couple hits from Mucho.. hopefully.
Pfft nevermind, dude literally woke up in the trash.
Aw, Inui actually tried helping our boy though. No wonder Koko gives in. He really didn’t wanna see those two get beat up. At least him being forced to join is better than him willingly offering his help to Tenjiku.
Now, I dunno too much about later arcs, but I'm a little certain that Koko stays on opposite sides of Inui, so now I'm wondering if that was done by choice or if the poor guy is always stuck making hard decisions against his will.
Inui’s little chuckle is precious.
“Please become the 11th leader of Black Dragon! Hanagki, save Koko. Please, save us.” Oohh wow, Inui’s even bowing to him and shedding tears. This poor boy needs a hug!
Oh, the hideout used to be Shinichiro’s bike shop.. that pieces some things together.
“Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Friends to laugh at dumb stuff you’d done together, even as adults.. I admired that king of gang.” This is becoming so wholesome.
“I’ll be captain of Tokyo Manji Gang’s first division and the 11th leader of Black Dragon.” Both?? At once?
Man.. here I was, all excited to finally see more of Sanzu and the dude just stood by the whole ep. Another time I suppose.

Analysis: Why Inupi has no scar?
I need time to reread Tokyo Revengers before writing a full review. But I couldn’t stop thinking about how Takemichi and Mikey could have saved Inupi and Akane from the fire.
So, let’s suppose:
Takemichi knew about the date and the circumstances of the incident
Inupi told him how he got the scar giving him information about the day, the year and where he lived
In what circumstances Inupi give Takemichi this information?
I think that it happened when Takemichi and Inupi got released after they were kidnapped by Mucho because it was after that event that Takemichi and Inupi became friends.
Inupi asked Takemichi to save Koko. Maybe he explained that Koko saved his life and while telling him the story, he told him that he had a sister, etc.
So, let’s suppose Takemichi has this information… but how could he stop a fire?
Takemichi probably discussed about it with Mikey, but none of them had a good idea about how to save them in a way they don’t appear suspicious (they are children, they can’t simply told Inupi to stay away from home that day - he wouldn’t believe them, and at the time he didn’t even know who they are - or kidnap him and Akane to prevent them to be at home).
So, here my reconstruction:
The day of the fire, Takemichi tried to keep Inupi far from home in “some way”
Takemichi bump into Inupi
Takemichi began to argue with Inupi (delinquent behaviour)
(we don’t know about Inupi personality before the fire, but let’s suppose…) Takemichi succeed in provoking Inupi and suddenly ran away, and Inupi start chasing him = Inupi didn’t return home early that day
Meanwhile, after making sure that nobody was at home, Mikey set the house on fire (maybe Mikey remember that Baji and Kazutora used to set cars on fire)
The house still burns, but Akane and Inupi are safe
Meanwhile, Koko and Akane…
Like in previous timeline, Koko and Akane want to the library
Koko still tried to kiss Akane, but she stops him and told him to do it only with the person he really likes
Right after that, Akane got a call from her parents because some neighbour told them that their house has burned and they wanted to ensure that Akane was safe
Akane is worried for Inupi because she thought that he was at home
When Koko heard the news, he panics and immediately went to search for Inupi (he thinks about Inupi first instead of comforting Akane)
Meanwhile:
Takemichi escaped from Inupi
Inupi got lost and found Shinichiro shop = first meeting with Black Dragons
Afterwards:
Inupi’s family still have money problems
Akane thinks about leaving school to start looking for a job or she decide to start working right after high school without continue her studies
Koko started to study how to make money to help
Meanwhile, Inupi chose to became a delinquent because of the influence of Black Dragons
After joining Black Dragons under Izana, Inupi started a rebellious phase
Koko and Akane are worried because Inupi often get injured
Inupi still went to juvie
How Koko end up in a gang:
When Inupi got released from juvie, Toman already destroyed Black Dragons (it’s the same thing in the previous timeline)
While Inupi was in juvie, Koko’s feeling for Akane started to fade and he realise that it was only a childhood crush
In the meantime, maybe Akane found a boyfriend
Koko couldn’t convince Inupi to stop being a delinquent and introduced him to Taiju
Taiju agreed in restoring Black Dragons with the condition that Koko join, too
Inupi is against it because Koko has nothing to do with delinquent world (since he is not obsessed with money)
Koko accept Taiju condition because he wants to protect Inupi
The two fight for the position of vice-captain because that position grant them the power to protect the other
They still have communication problems, but nothing serious, only trivial things
Well, that’s my ideal reconstruction to explain why Inupi scar disappeared (= no fire) but still get involved with gangs along with Koko.
As for the reasons Takemichi and Mikey were able to save Akane, but not Kakucho’s parents:
Not enough information
Kind of incident
Distance
Inupi telling Takemichi about the circumstances of the fire is plausible. On the other hand, Takemichi and Kakucho lost contacts. Takemichi didn’t know how the car incident happened. Also, how can two children stop a car incident? Kakucho was going to a trip with his parents when the incident happened, it was probably really far the territory Takemichi and Mikey could reach.
