I was a bit obsessed with Game & Watch handhelds back in the early 80s. Alas, they were not always easy to find and weren't always cheap. There were absolutely tons of them on offer, of varying quality. They were popular enough that versions were even made in the Soviet Union/Eastern Bloc. Pretty much all of the arcade games were ported to some sort of handheld/game& watch - Donkey Kong, Pac Man plus all sorts of others including rpg-like things. There were also numerous copies of these. I did own a copy of Donkey Kong but Kong was a vampire and you had to dodge ghosts and other things IIRC. Quite a few models had two halves that folded together, which was a design that was used in later handhelds - especially the Nintendo DS. I still own the first one I had, Shuttle Voyage. My original is on the right (from 1982, I think), the one on the left and the box were sourced on Ebay. G&W with a calculator were a bit more rare. There is like dozen technologies of computer and TV displays, but they all work on 2 light emission methods
You either shoot energy(usualy electrons) onto phosphorus layer which use this energy to emit visible white light, or use LEDs to emit color light. What is most interesting is that white LEDs use first method, as they shine UV light on phosphorus layer inside diode
LCDs are just colour pixelated filter on white light, VFDs image shaped electron catchers, CRTs straight up fired electrons on phosphorus screen while Plasma displays do it inside pixels using neon signs!
So don't trust electronics producers that they invent something new, they just shape existing technology in different way
