For Marc

A few days ago, I found out a friend was missing. He was someone important to me, someone who had gone through some very intense and important work with me. We had participated in a documentary film about racism on college campuses. As a white woman, the topic was difficult to discuss because most whites are taught to be color blind, to avoid discussing our race, and to be somewhat numb to the range of terrible things that happen every day to people of color in the United States. The people of color in the group were amazingly sensitive, inspiring, and thoughtful, no one more so than Marc. Marc had the soul of a poet. When he spoke, the room was mesmerized. He was passionate and compelling. He was powerful and raw. He was honest and loving. He wasn't perfect, but he showed so much grace in his search for truth.

We learned that Marc's body was found burned in his car and likely, he was murdered. Everything about the scene is suspicious and we may never know what really happened or why. We just know that our Marc is gone.

Sometimes we lose someone and live with the regrets that we never told them how we feel about them. In this case, that is not true. I told Marc how much I valued and respected him. He knew that I saw him as someone that I would be connected to forever. I told him that I was there for him no matter what. He knew how much I loved him. Perhaps it is impossible for someone to know just how deeply they have impacted us, but I tried with Marc to convey to him just how incredible I thought he was. It is with great sadness that I say goodbye to my friend. I will never be able to see him smile again, never be able to hear his deep and complex thoughts on a subject I present to him. And I will never experience his hugs again, which got me through a difficult time.

Marc, you will never be forgotten. You changed people who came into contact with you. You made a positive impact in the world. Your legacy will live on in others and we will tell stories about you, we will tell of the great soul that was taken from this earth way too soon.

Friends, please reach out to the people you love and tell them what they mean to you. Don't wait until it is too late.
