Yesterday I saw Marshall. It was a great movie, I highly recommend watching it. "Where you see wrong or inequality or injustice, speak out, because this is your country. This is your democracy. Make it. Protect it. Pass it on." -Thurgood Marshall

Convinced that one door opens another, Latina entrepreneurs such as myself seek to be better for the community by helping grow their families while working towards prosperity. For my part, I have carved a career as a self proclaimed Latina Influencer storyteller. Strong Latinas are sometimes seen as aggressive because of our loud voices. A narrow minded conservative POV publicly critized Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz of San Juan Puerto Rico for providing an honest assesment of the poorly distributed amount of aid given to her district. So, becoming a team player in group settings often leads to calculate exactly as we self reflect. And, as a breakdown of communication happens, there is a false narrative about Latinas that speak up and tell their story. Latinas suspend their own political roles for the well being and protection of her people. In many cases Latinas in leadership roles face a double standard. We have to be composed, complicit, and practice diplomacy even during humanitarian crisis’. The island of Puerto Rico is home to my family. It is a dire situation. Why would any normal circumstance apply to a Latina in a position to look after millions of people in our US? The mayor unfairly denounced by our government is dealing with an island of US citizens which its infrastructures have all collapsed. I know first hand that the island is destroyed. My cousin has boots on the ground as he is in PR serving as a police officer. He shared one note with me via Facebook messenger - Puerto Rico is nothing short than a catastrophy! As a result of short sidedeness, Latinas like Carmen have had to take it down a notch. She was filmed again yesterday with a different composure. It means we often struggle with inner confusion over sharing our passion, versus staying silent. When reading a room where we see eyes wide or full of uncomfortable faces, we historically lead inner frustration and paranoia. In the most general terms, Latinas are givers. What is true for most of us, Latinas are compassionate to a fault. We put up with finding a medium that doesn’t appear self-righteous but seek a blend of being understood for caring too much. Still without loosing ourselves, i do not feel this is fair. We stay in the game of professional skills, and on top helping our own professional goals to help others. This, at least for me, helps fire up inspiration. I had to embrace the differences between ourselves, and our outward appearance even more when a colleague told me there were roomers that I was aggressive.
Earning the opportunity professionally isn’t always rewarded but when it is, It feels great. Some of us are docile and play into being liked instead of doing what’s right. I do the opposite. I prefer to be helpful and useful to productivity with a friendly robust energetic attitude. I think pretending to be nice is disingenuous and won’t help either type of women set up for successes. In my world view, letting go of control serves everybody in an organization. If you weren’t meant to be in a particular team, project or leadership role, than something better is on its way. And, that one wasn’t for you. First, I learned to embrace all of my complicated human traits.  I let other people deal with their own opinion of me because I cannot change it. The minute I embraced all of this, was when I realized many strong females experience similar issues. If you don’t have a soft feminine voice, opinions will swirl around you.  It isn’t my job to be everything to everybody. I no longer get distracted by nuances of changing the course of perception.  Personally, anyone that has truly ever known me professionally, knows that regardless of what I may feel, if something is right, I do everything to work towards supporting that. Nobody, including me, should have to apologize for going against the grain to help bring the true story to light.  Along the way, I learned from the best leaders that supported me through this. Then something happened when I started to work for others that didn’t necessarily seem so great, or that did not like me, nor my work.  I found myself doing everything to make them like me.  I lost myself, was not productive, and I hated myself.  It turns out that these were the most important lessons of my professional experiences.
In a team, I practice working hard to be as productive as others to help them shine, put my best foot forward but speak out for those that need help to share their voice. When I don’t look for gratitude, the people that have mattered, noticed. On projects I have brought my skills to help raise awareness, I set them up for success. I worked with CPG brand KnockOut and Doves’ mature skincare soap, and recently, when I was asked to be the voice for Latinos in the entertainment industry as a writer, I wrote stories published by Fox News to shed light on Latino Cinema / Transgender community in Cuba and Mexico, the indigenous folks of Columbia’s Amazon river and more. Equally, it was a blessing to be part of costume design team on the story that tells the incredible work of Thurgood Marshall in the film MARSHALL due out in theaters in October of 2017.
Costume design is and has always been part of my life. Since the first time I could recall watching An American in Paris at the age of 10, I knew I was destined to work in media. Costume design has been such an obvious part of my storytelling career, but I would never have guessed that I would be working other skills from my left and right brain.  So now, I hope to be an inspiration to other younger Latinas determined to get out and stretch themselves. And, I am a proud outspoken female in the digital advertising/ media landscape.
Any Hispanic kid from humble beginnings should dream big and never give up. Regardless of the clash of feminism, it is so important to own your own valuable self worth.  The impossible is possible if you push through. Honored by my industry peers, myself along with the great Ruth Carter were mentioned for our work in a powerful civil rights biopic film in our Costume Designers’ Guild magazine under- Bold Face mention.
Who knew that the minute I took my first step in the costume shop at University California Berkeley, it all made sense. Shakespeare, Miller, and Pinter stage productions led to so many great collaborations and building brands along with HBO, Fox television shows and feature films.
