VA - J Jazz Vol. 4: Deep Modern Jazz from Japan - Nippon Columbia 1968 -1981 - a new entry in BBE Music's excellent comp series
With J Jazz volume 4, the BBE J Jazz Bullet Train continues its journey traversing the expansive landscape of modern Japanese jazz. Volume 4 is the latest in the universally praised compilation series exploring the best, rarest and most innovative jazz to emerge from the Far East. Please take your seats for a first-class ticket to J Jazz central. This latest station stop off is with the famed Nippon Columbia label, one of the biggest labels in Japan, whose jazz output embraces every possible style imaginable. Focussing on the key years 1968-1981, J Jazz volume 4 sees compilers Tony Higgins and Mike Peden dig even deeper into their record collections and pull-out tracks that span styles ranging from solo to big band, jazz classical interpretations and heavy jazz rock, to febrile post-bop, white hot samba fusion, and modal psychedelic wig-outs. J Jazz volume 4 features icons such as drum master Takeo Moriyama, keyboard magi Hiromasa Suzuki, Fumio Itabashi, and Masahiko Satoh, and guitar wizards Kazumi Watanabe and Kiyoshi Sugimoto, alongside big band maestros and innovators Nobuo Hara and his Sharps and Flats, and Toshiyuki Miyama’s New Herd. Thunderous basslines nestle alongside glistening runs of electric piano, bubbling synths and air-tight drumming as the heavy psychedelic modal blues of Jiro Inagaki flows with the infectious samba grooves of Takashi Mizuhashi featuring Herbie Hancock; Shigeharu Mukai’s fusion funk epics take the music to another level and Mikio Masuda’s driving keyboard rhythms brings the heat to an incendiary dancefloor zone. With 7,000 words of extensive sleeve notes, J Jazz vol 4 comes in a triple 180g vinyl set inside a deluxe gatefold sleeve with obi strip plus a 4 page insert. The double CD features two bonus tracks not on the vinyl edition. Mastered at the Grammy-nominated Carvery Studio by Frank Merritt, this latest collection is a worthy successor to the preceding three volumes that have set the bar so high. J Jazz is curated for BBE Music by Tony Higgins and Mike Peden.

when you get this you have to answer with 5 of ur fav songs and then tag your mutuals to do the same :) (no pressure <;3)
I have been tagged by the lovely @troubled-mind, thank you so much ( ´ ∀ `)ノ~ ♡ I will go with 5 current favorites/on repeat, in no particular order.
1. Valle Incantata - Satoh Masahiko w/ vocals by Nakayama Chinatsu from Belladonna of Sadness
youtube
For some reason, I've been thinking of this movie again recently. I saw it about 8 years ago in Paris, in the smallest theater I had ever been in, and the experience has stayed with me ever since. The OST is beautiful, but I especially enjoy this one. I love the haunted feeling of it, the high pitched line at the back, the way the singer's voice scraps at the start and the end, the sinister, deep laugh at the end.
2. Rebel - TVXQ!
youtube
I have been a fan of theirs since Keep Your Head Down in 2011 (yes, since it's only the two of them) and I am always happy when they have something new coming out. I really like this one, the throaty voice Yunho takes, Max holding the high notes, the way the rhythm keeps changing along, and that unexpected piano incursion at 1:41. Also the clip looks really cool.
3. fuck you i'm going underground - Grand Commander
youtube
This is my current, well, 'fuck it we ball' song for when everything just gets a little Too Much (but I realistically can't throw my work in my boss' face and run away so i need to exorcise the feelings differently). I really like Grand Commander's voice, and the music actually helps motivate me.
4. Thị Mầu - Hòa Minzy x Masew
youtube
For some reason, spotify recced me quite a few vietnamese songs recently, and I keep coming back to the last one to date (which apparently started a huge trend on tiktok). I am a sucker for songs that mix traditional and modern music so that's already a great start. I recently (like last week recently) checked the clip which is SO pretty, as well as the lyrics/story which are based on a play often adapted in traditional musical theater how cool is that?
5. Auf Wiedersehen - Mansfield. TYA
youtube
The clip is really long (but also really cool) so the song starts at 2:25. I love Mansfield. TYA, I think they are one of my favorite french groups. They do electronic music in a way I especially enjoy, I love their voices, and they have a whole universe that i vibe with. I really like this song, the synth and the battery make my bone vibrate I love it. That xylophone-like percussion is especially delicious.
If you feel so inclined, I'll take @iguessitsjustme @petrichoraline @sparklyeyedhimbo @gillianthecat @benkaaoi @dengswei and @silverquillsideas .。.:*☆

Belladonna of sadness (1973 Film)
Co directed by Osamu Tezuka
Directed by Eiichi Yamamoto
Music by
Masahiko Satoh
Edit: Masashi Furukawa
Cinematography: Shigeru Yamazaki
illustrator: Kuni Fuka
Found a wonderful style of animation yesterday! Even though this feature length film has some very dark themes to it it does convey images, music and dialogue a story about woman resilience. Even if it means making a deal with the devil.
It has achieved the psychedelic animation with pens and water colours. As well as the use of negative space and background to give focus on the characters storyline.
That and the sound track is unique and moving in this film.
With different textures of animation that involves painting animation when Jeanne found her connection to nature. Eventually helping her village find excitement and joy in life through sexual liberation and autonomy.
She lost her dignity, with someone in power taking it away from her, to her rediscovering and embodying her own sexuality and life again. Even if it meant making the deal with the devil to have control over her life again.
I will not recommend it for people who have or still processing their traumatic experiences of sexual and/or domestic violence.
And also a strobe warning for those who are are epileptic.
Here is a scene to get inspired for animation illustrator inspiration.

In conclusion it brings up intersting techniques to film making that is based on the editing and the intention of the animation as it doesn't have to be all animated to give narrative.
The use of space colour and animation technique gives the mood of the story, from brightly colour start at Jean and Jeanne wedding to very dark earth colours for traumatic events.
