Very handsome with that gruff voice and accent, you just know this man knew how to talk dirty in bed. I didn’t notice him until he appeared in Orange is the New Black. So far I know absolutely nothing of his personal life. So he’s most likely straight, but that just means I can image my own personal life for him. Something like, he’s into chubs and flies in to see me on the weekends to have wild, hot sex. Yeah.. that sounds good.

ERIN BROCKOVICH 2000
Well, um, seeing as how I have no brains or legal expertise, and Ed here was losing all faith in the system, I just went out there and performed sexual favors. Six hundred and thirty-four blow jobs in five days... I'm really quite tired.

. Ever since I was a child, people said my family was cursed. Mom tried to protect us with God. Dad tried to protect us with wrestling. He said if we were the toughest, the strongest, nothing could ever hurt us. I believed him. We all did.

Hello Tomorrow! (2023)
In today's review, I find the monetary value in the dreams that take us beyond the stars. As I attempt a #positive review of the 2023 T.V. comedy drama, Hello Tomorrow! #BillyCrudup #HankAzaria #HaneefahWood #AlisonPill #NicholasPodany #DewshaneWilliams
The future was supposed to be magnificent, at least according to T.V., hopping on a hover car to take a trip to any planet, while robot butlers do all the busy work. A nice dream, or so it would remain to be. We might end up on the moon yet (well, not us… maybe our great-grandchildren). In 2023, a streaming series showcases the complications of life on the road, by promising us the stars, in…

Captivity (2007)
Tumblr media
Even if its lame twist ending and even lamer final scene didn’t doom Captivity to an eternity of hot coals and pitchforks, its eye-rolling attempt to cash in on the briefly popular “torture porn” horror subgenre would. Neither tense nor scary, it won’t even appeal to those looking for sleazy trash.
Fashion model Jennifer Tree (Elisha Cuthbert) is kidnapped and brought to an unknown location. There, her captor proceeds to subject her to various forms of psychological torture. When she discovers another captive in the adjoining cell, Jennifer and Gary (Daniel Gillies) search for a way to escape together.
In all fairness, this film is not as grisly as the films it wants to emulate, like the Saw and Hostel pictures from 2003 and onwards. Jennifer may get force-fed a smoothie made of eyeballs and ears, but it’s more about the idea of how disgusting it would be to eat that sort of thing than the person whose face got shredded to make it happen. There is one scene in which a woman dies after her face is melted with acid but most of the time, Jennifer is threatened, subjected to loud noises or blasted with blinding lights when she doesn’t do what her kidnapper wants her to. Most of the torture she experiences deliberately avoids dirtying up her pretty face - for reasons that are revealed later. It’s torture but not the kind you’d expect from a movie of this genre made in 2007. That doesn’t mean it isn’t trashy, however.
About a third of Captivity has Jennifer trying to figure out why she’s woken up in this strange place, what her kidnapper wants from her, whether or not she can escape, etc. It doesn’t take you long - far less time than Jennifer - to figure out that it's all part of a sick game. If our heroine finds an object that might help her out, if a route seems to lead outside, if there’s a glimmer of hope somewhere, it’s been planted so the weirdo in charge can get his jollies tickled. This makes you immediately suspicious of Gary.
I have to pause and explain in detail one particular aspect of Jennifer and Gary's bonding because it makes no sense and bugged me to no end. Between the two is a soundproof glass window that’s been painted black. They communicate by scratching away the paint and spelling out sentences to each other. The thing is, that… just wouldn’t work. There must be paint on both sides of the glass for them to write messages to each other. Do you spot the problem with that? Unless you scratch your message in a spot where your neighbor has already removed all of their paint, they won't see anything. It doesn’t really matter but it’s a telltale sign that this movie hasn’t been thought all the way through.
Tumblr media
As you might've guessed, Gary is in on this whole kidnap-torture thing. He and his brother, Ben (Pruitt Taylor Vince), are psychopaths who kidnap beautiful women and torture them psychologically. At their lowest, the women are introduced to Gary. Inevitably, they bond, an attraction develops, the two are allowed to be in the same room and they end up having sex (Ben gets to watch, which is what he likes). Soon after, the women are murdered - presumably turned into smoothies. I guess I can buy that premise. It explains why none of the ordeals Jennifer goes through are “that bad” - forcing her to sit down and watch H.P. Lovecraft’s The Tomb or Mummy Maniac, both of which are advertised on the DVD, would be far more painful than some of what she goes through. It does require them to have this huge area dedicated to torture rooms and bedrooms with automated doors, hidden cameras, TV screens and all sorts of equipment but you can understand pouring a lot of time and money into your hobby - sick as it is.
The real problem is that you can tell director Roland Joffé and writer Larry Cohen thought this reveal was going to have people picking up their jaws up from the floor when it’s obvious to anyone watching. At one point, Jennifer is shown a tape depicting the “origin” of Ben’s madness. He was being molested by his mother until he murdered her on camera. Here’s the thing. That footage isn’t shot from a first-person point-of-view. Someone else was there to film what happened. Put two-and-two together, Jennifer. Who do you think was there with him?
No bad movie about a female victim is complete with a groan-inducing "empowering" ending - viewable only in the unrated version of the DVD. Following her escape (no thanks to two idiot police detectives who get themselves killed faster than this movie’s chances of being good), Jennifer has slain the two brothers and re-entered society. In no time at all, she turns into the cliché to end all clichés: a serial killer who hunts serial killers! Give me a break.
Tumblr media
The only thing worth remembering about Captivity is the scene in which Jennifer is forced to drink that eyeball and ear smoothie. It’s so gross and so ridiculous there’s no way anyone anywhere else will ever show that deranged visual on film. Even as something unpleasant you could subject someone you don’t like to, you could do better than Captivity. (Unrated version on DVD, October 31, 2021)

This was the saddest fucking movie I've ever seen.
This review is going to be all over the place, but as per usual I'm going to start with a deeply personal overshare of where I'm at for this viewing. I'm seeing this as the first watch of the New Year after coming off of 2 months of deeply missing my sister, who lives in another state. This movie understands what it is to go through your little everyday needs while having a giant sibling sized hole in your heart. I sobbed at this movie, especially during the dream sequence of the afterlife, but throughout the whole film I was getting chills. I sobbed last week at Christmas Mass because the priest started his homily with a comment on how all of his Christmas memories are of him and his two older sisters, in the house that they grew up in, which has been sold so that place truly only exists in his memory now. The first thing I thought of when I woke up on Christmas morning was how my sister and I would always get up extra early, before our parents, and just sit together in front of the tree and look at the lights. That's what Christmas means to me. My childhood house is also now sold. I was so affected by Kevin's statement that he doesn't even need to be doing anything in particular with his brothers-it's just the being together. I will be going to my sister's for Christmas next year. It cannot be overstated how masterful Zac Efron is in this film. When David is announced as having the match against the heavy weight champ you just see Kevin embody every emotion. The betrayal, the holding himself together, the wanting to cry, the disappointment, the growing cold. Then again when Kerry gives his father the gun and Kevin bores his eyes into Pam as if to say, maybe if we just pretend we aren't here it'll be okay. I cried very hard at the sight of absolutely swelling Zac Efron cradle his little baby. So beautiful and you just know that this man will try his hardest to not be his father (whether that means running away to protect them from the curse or by remaining and being triggered by his own grief). There was such a delicate balance of conveying his limited worldview, wanting to live up to his dad's expectations (manipulations), and support his brothers above everything else. Just masterful from Efron, and I didn't think I'd see that to this level. I came to this movie because A24, I love Richard Reed Perry, and I'm a huge fan of the talent that is Harris Dickinson. I think the final straw was that A24 mailed me my zine which had the pinup of my baby, Harris Dickinson. I hope to continue to watch everything he does (plug here for FX's mini series, Trust). Every time Harris was on screen I had the dopiest grin on my face because he just makes me happy and especially so as David. And then the unexpected happened. I didn't know anything about the Von Erich's and I certainly don't know anything about wrestling (I did love the Netflix series, GLOW), so this was almost completely foreign territory to me. Wrestling is just heterosexual drag, right? I knew this movie would be sad, and I knew that I'm super susceptible to anything that showcases siblingship, but this was a new level. The tragedy of it all. Sometimes the movie felt clunky but that kind of fit with the body shapes thematically. Some lines, especially from the father didn't feel natural to me. I think Maura Tierney was outstanding for what little screentime she had. The music, the costuming, as well as the camera work was all superb. I also did like seeing Michael J Harney and Lily James. Also I LOVE when a movie has a, Thank God I'm A Country Boy, needle drop (looking at you, Pauly Shore's Son-in-Law)!!! Once again, I was crushed by the ending dialogue and the way this movie just gets what it means to love your family. I loved that two background wrestlers were actual Von Erichs! Maybe I should rewatch Blue Valentine or Dead Man Walking before saying this is the saddest movie I've ever seen but man, I have not sobbed like that in a theater before. I'm glad I managed to stick with it. This movie bonzo gonzo'd my heart.

Very nice capture of Marc as Burr and Jimmie as Washington. Some head obstruction at the very bottom of the screen in wideshots, but it never takes away. This cast is absolutely Incredible together, Miguel continues to shine as the best hamilton we've ever had, While Marc plays off him and the rest of the cast insanely well. The chemistry is off the charts in this video.

The Iron Claw (2023) dir. Sean Durkin. 7.5/10
I wouldn't recommend this movie to my friends. I wouldn't rewatch this movie.
Zac Efron's body is no joke here.
The deaths within the real family is so sad to learn about. Damn, at the crowd coming to these funerals.
Michael Harney's hair color is a new vibe.
This movie reinforces my confusion on the appeal of wrestling shows like this. It's so much brutal and so much show.
I am interested in what the wrestling stage feels like and what wrestling on it feels like. It seems different from what I imagined. I never really thought about the impact on Olympians when the country decides not to participate. I don't think this is a sad movie, but the story behind it is sad. Butm there's a lot of goodness that comes from Kevin's love and care for his brothers. We love the empathy in his kids. I did almost tear at the part when Kevin was saying how he's no longer a brother. The parents being so involved and so uninvolved in their children's lives could have essays written about it.

Albert Finney and Julia Roberts in Erin Brockovich (Steven Soderbergh, 2000) Cast: Julia Roberts, Albert Finney, Aaron Eckhart, Conchata Ferrell, Marg Helgenberger, Michael Harney, Cherry Jones, Tracey Walter, Peter Coyote, T.J. Thyne, Veanne Cox. Screenplay: Susannah Grant. Cinematography: Edward Lachman. Production design: Philip Messina. Film editing: Anne V. Coates. Music: Thomas Newman. Any film that purports to be what the title character of Erin Brockovich calls a "David and what's-his-name" story is bound to be somewhat formulaic. But I can forgive Steven Soderbergh's movie for its clichés, such as the hunky next-door neighbor who provides Erin with sex and babysitting, or the starchy, tightly wound female lawyer who tries and fails to do the kind of work in signing up participants in the lawsuit that comes so naturally to Erin. We're asked to swallow a lot of narrative shortcutting in the relationship that she builds with Ed Masry, too. But it's to Julia Roberts's great Oscar-winning credit that she makes this fictionalized version of a real person (whom we see early in the film in the role of a waitress) as believable as she does, with the considerable help of the invaluable (but never Oscar-winning) Albert Finney as Ed. I've always thought that Soderbergh is undermined by his choice of material: Traffic, which came out the same year as Erin Brockovich and won an Oscar for Soderbergh, is weakened by the difficulty of cramming so many interlocking stories into the confines of a feature film, and it too suffers from some formulaic plotting. But Erin Brockovich makes the case for the feel-good movie with its director's obvious delight in providing a showcase for such skilled actors. This is what makes his Ocean's movies (20001, 2004, 2007) and the Magic Mikes (2012, 2015) so entertaining. Would a grittier approach with less charismatic stars have done a better job of focusing the story away from the actors and onto  Brockovich and Masry's fight with PG&E? Yes, probably. But there's something to be said for good things in glossy packages.
