Ame Plays: Minute of Islands
Tumblr media
I would describe this as more of an interactive story with light puzzle elements. It certainly is darker than I was expecting from the trailer, but the game does explicitly warn for content at the beginning which is always nice to see.
You play as Mo, a young woman tasked with looking after four giants who work to produce power to run the air filters, in a post-apocalyptic world where fungus spores have spread, causing hallucinations, loss of limb and death. When the four giants mysteriously stop working, Mo has to journey around her home islands to restart the system, confronting her family, friends and own inner demons along the way.
The aesthetic is somewhere around 'Cal Arts' meets 'HR Giger' or 'Adventure Time but more fucked up'. Definitely worth a playthrough for some of the themes but go in knowing that any major questions about the post-apocalyptic world will never be answered - the story really is centered around Mo and the weight of the burden on her shoulders.

And I really enjoy that conjunction of influences. Except that I like the art style of Minute of Islands much more, as it reminds me of the comics by French artist Jean “Moebius” Giraud. When I saw the trailer for Minute of Islands, I instantly thought it looked like Adventure Time. This review is based on a retail copy provided by the publisher.I have to admit I’m not exactly a fan of Adventure Time (I’m more of a Rick and Morty enthusiast), but I like the idea of that kind of post-apocalyptic cartoon. If you get easily annoyed by sluggish pacing and annoying mechanics for a story-driven game, then this is a game to avoid. Would I recommend Minute of Islands? Here’s the sitch: If you’re into great art style for a story-driven game, then yes, this is a good game to check out. It’s just something you wouldn’t notice watching a gameplay video, but will when you play the game. With the amount of backtracking you’ll have to do in Minute of Islands, these half-steps will be the bane of your existence. It’s so frustrating though, that those half-steps are everywhere, and most of the time jumping up and dropping down these platforms take some type of precision. For some reason though, the developers created these half-steps, i.e., platforms that can be reached by jumping halfway that are usually clustered above a climbable platform. Minute of Islands feature some light platforming that involves jumping and dropping down steps, cliffs, etc. I also did not think that I would get annoyed by something so “minute” like jumping up and dropping down a step. I mean, it’s even fine if the story was piecemeal I just wish there was some way to skip the narration and cut scenes, especially for those who would like to replay the game and fast forward the story. If it tackled the storytelling in chunks rather than bits and pieces, I’m sure I would have paid more attention to it. Minute of Islands suffers from sluggish pacing. It’s a double-edged sword: you get to relish in the beautiful scenery and art of the game, but why did it have to happen just after you’ve already spoken to an NPC just a few minutes ago for lord knows how long. Sometimes the game just stops so it can pan out to show you the new area Mo has arrived in. It’s not something that you can skip too you’ll have to dredge on a few seconds of dialogue only to be stopped again after progressing a couple of minutes later. What isn’t so nice is that every few steps, the game stops you from progressing so the narration can happen. It’s nice that the game has a lovely voiceover (the game is narrated by a single person), which is great for an indie game. While I followed the story of Minute of Islands from the start, after the second chapter, I just lost interest. Mo then goes on a journey to the islands wielding the Omni Switch, a stick that needs to be used to repair the brothers. One day, Mo realizes that the brothers are in need of repair and has left the islands with some gaseous atmosphere where it can get really hard to breathe. Mo lives with her family on these islands that are powered and protected by four giant brothers. You take on the role of Mo, a guardian of an archipelago (which is a term used for a cluster of islands, hence the title Minute of Islands). Here’s the gist of the story that I could muster. However, what killed it for me is its gameplay. It’s also the premise that there’s more to the story than meets the eye that interested me. At first glance, the game features that cartoony art that I could get into. You know, I’m usually a sucker for indie games with great art styles and deep storylines, and I really wish Minute of Islands did it for me.

Really sad that for all the visual and thematic coherence Minute of Islands is less than the sum of its parts. The didascalic narrator, the wasted potential of most scenes written with no subtlety and way too many explicit pointers to The Point of the game (sanitized and flattened), the lack of interesting puzzles or well-written memory tidbits, the useless hallucination sequences... All the materials for a great story were right there, and instead the game ended up as a mid indie project with no sense for storytelling.

So I picked up a couple of Nintendo games in the new years sale, thinking I could get out of this gamer funk I've been in all of 2023. Started off with Minute of Islands, and it has to be the most depressing game I've ever played in my life. With a heroine who gives adult Tibby Devin a run for his money in the problematic matyr department, a world that is equal parts beautiful and harrowing, and a narrative that boils down to 'Just give up and die', I feel worse than when I started. Highly reccomend.

complaints I've already seen about Coral Island, a new Indonesian kickstarter cozy game: the barman selling a ruined dish is an uncalled-for jab at restaurant workers! cats shouldn't hang out outdoors! eew, this woman shouldn't display her pregnancy stretch marks! where are all the kippot! why is everyone in such good shape! preposterous! this partially deaf character talking in caps lock is triggering me! no one in doctors without borders would be that tattooed, this dreadful representation is literal murder! no doctor would forget her paperwork at a library, for that matter! why is a japanese fisherman talking like a scottish pirate, this is inaccurate!
meanwhile in the game: I freed a stone statue from a magical underground prison and he put an enchantment on my hoe. his brother asked me if I liked figs is he flirting. my hippie boyfriend is heartbroken because his bucket-wearing pet duck is sick but shhh watching tv will heal him. last night when I talked to the outdoors cat she mentioned that she has a crippling fear of birds and thinks of getting therapy. a stem academic looks like a kpop idol and is getting enough sleep. he wears his astrophysics degree all over himself like a linguist would have worn alphabet necklaces, just to spite his dad but it's not working why is it not working ah shit it's working. mermaids hired me as a janitor. it's not pro bono I'm paid in diamonds. my neighbor is worried that his shiba inu went back to rejoin the mountain whence it came from. a turtle won't let me pass until I serve her spaghetti. I'm fighting capitalism with a literal scythe. the local blacksmith is asking my opinion regarding a legendary battle hammer and if it's worth the logistics hassle. it's been a year crabs are still dancing in celebration their zeal is admirable but their choreography could use some work. this giant monkey covered in two layers of meta wants to sell me a nostalgic souvenir. I know it because he sent me a polite letter. how many propaganda flyers can I fish out of this pond a challenge. I barged into a local lab and upended a barrel of seaweed over intricate circuitry now my flowers are five percent prettier. the scientist at the lab attached a mermish translator to my diving suit via the power of coffee. hold on I'm doing meal prep for next week let me finish putting ectoplasmic slime on okra
