Hi again absolutebl! I was reading this BL manga and I realized that I enjoy a certain seme-uke pairing: soft reliable seme + feisty uke. Do you have any recs for BLs with this dynamic? The best example I can think of is Shi De and Shu Yi in WBL.

Soft Reliable (devoted) Seme + Feisty Uke

(Like Shi De and Shu Yi in We Best Love.)

Ooo, fun request! So explicitly NOT a tsundere or a himbo seme. But the uke could probubly be tsundere.

Seven Days (what you doubt me?) - Japan, grey

Of course it rates. Seryou & Yuzuru don’t have a very strong S/u dynamic but Seryou is (basically) the pursuer and he is soft AF. Yuzuru isn’t so much tsundere as he is obstreperous. I consider this one of the best live action yaois ever made, with perfectly structured angst, fantastic characters and acting, and no problematic tropes (rare in Japanese BL). The leads have excellent chemistry although it’s low heat there’s still some really cute mutual kisses.

Light on Me - Korea, Viki

Very much a high school setting and low heat, but this is still one of my favorite KBLs. It’s an elegant pastiche of traditional live action yaoi but all tropes are cleverly deployed to bolster one of the most riveting love triangles ever put on screen… and I don’t like love triangles! Both semes are super soft. Full review.

Make it Right - Thailand, YouTube

The original Thai version of this dynamic. Tee is unequivocally devoted to Fuse from the moment they first get together. Fuse is more chaos bi: cheating, messy and confused (as is common with the high school stuff) but I think it’s the dynamic you’re after. What more can I say about this show, the origin of the Thai BL pulps? It’s objectively terrible, and not just the leads but the side couples too, and yet I love it. I tend to call myself the “world’s foremost Make It Right apologist.” I recognize the issues but I find it utterly charming, especially Tee’s utter devotion to Fuse the disaster.

SOTUS - Thailand, YouTube

The follow up version to Make it Right, but less soft. This is the BL that launched a hundred BLs. No literally, It was SOTUS’s international success that pretty much built the Thai BL industry into the juggernaut it is today. It’s classic sunshine/tsundere, but Kong is very steadfast and soft. People have baggage around SOTUS, I have nostalgia. trigger: hazing and bullying.

Manner of Death - Thailand, WeTV

Honestly I think this one qualifies. This is TanBun’s dynamic. I like MoD a lot but I’m conflicted over it being actually BL. It’s a great gay romantic suspense, although the mystery element is its weakness. MaxTul, the Kings of chemistry, are, of course, perfect and perfectly cast, but their romance thread is more a distraction than an addition. Still, I could watch them make-out the phonebook. Trash watch here.

Nitiman - Thailand, YouTube

This show was so close to being brilliant. They fudged the ending but this is probubly one of Thailand’s most classic takes on uni set yaoi with this exact dynamic. This Thai BL pulp had sympathetic characters, a solid tsundere uke redemption arc, and a fantastic pining seme who yearned without bullying, grooming, or gaslighting. Plus when they're together, they're ridiculously soft. But it also had a realistic portrayal of university life, bisexual awakening, and friendship groups. Bummer about the ending. Full review.

Dear Doctor, I’m Coming For Your Soul - Thailand, iQIYI

This is a romance between a doctor trying to save his patients and a reaper who is both his enemy and (eventual) lover. Basically it’s the genius premise of a gay Doom at Your Service. High concept looks good on you, Thailand. It’s lovely to see KarnNat back on screen together and they are still great, and Karn is just painfully beautiful. I enjoyed it more than it’s ending deserved, and the best I can say is that it’s not strictly HEA but if you’re okay with Life: Love on the Line, you’ll be okay with this BL. It’s set up well, there’s no surprise unpleasantness like HIStory 3: The BL that shall not be named. Full review.

Basically the softest BL ever Bar is feisty, but it’s kinda token tsundere. Younger boy wants to court older boy and does and… that’s it. No really that’s the WHOLE STORY. There is actually no angst, drama, or, indeed plot. But are they the softest bois ever to BL as a main couple? Yes, they are.

Cherry Magic - Japan, indie subbed

AKA 30 Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard AKA 30-sai made Dotei Da to Mahotsukai ni Nareru rashii

Kurosawa is certainly soft but Adachi is maybe more chaos confused than feisty. (Another one like this is My Love Mix Up.) This is the sweetest fluffiest magical realism BL, packaged as a pinning office romance, very low heat (practically chaste) but the cutest.

Mr. Unlucky Can Only Kiss - Japan, Viki (fan subbed)

AKA Fukou-kun wa Kiss Suru Shikanai! AKA Mr. Unlucky Has No Choice but to Kiss!

Mr Chronically Unlucky (another adorable chaos muffin) and Mr Always Lucky (solid, steadfast, crushing from the start) end up dating after they meet at uni orientation. It’s JAPAN yet they kissed in the first episode. What freaky alt-reality did I enter into? That’s all they kiss tho, over which I was a touch disappointed (I know). Still I spent far too much of my time with this show biting my knuckles and squealing “THEY’RE SO CUTE!” It is very slapstick Japanese style comedic (light) BL, so if you like that style, you’ll adore this show.

Amusing story: I paused mid the most tooth-achingly adorable first date in the entire universe and Viki was like “something missing?” and I was like “MY HEART YOU BASTARDS!”

Word of Honor - China censored, YouTube & Viki

I don’t rec Chinese stuff often, because I believe in censoring the censors, but this show is one of my favorites of the post 2016 censored bromances. It’s two murder-gay assassins (pining sunshine/tsundere), and they are so insanely gay for two boys who will never be allowed to kiss. Tropes include: wuxia, soulmates, paranormal, historical, and fantasy elements.

College Sim Dump!!

Will I ever be on time for a follower milestone? Not likely. 😅

Anyway, as a celebration for 150 followers here are eight cc free sims all enrolled in university! Each sim has been enrolled in a degree program, had two skills set to level three, signed up for organizations, as well as gotten scholarships!

A little about the sims...

Cassidy Whitmore (she/her) - Music Lover, Outgoing, Mean - Unapologetic, loud, and the mastermind behind The Whitmores, her and her brother's duo. A bit much to handle sometimes but a brilliant songwriter without much of a care for actually doing her homework, after all why write essays and answer multiple choice questions about songwriting when you can actually be writing songs?

Quinn Whitmore (he/him) - Music Lover, Paranoid, Good - Cassidy's younger brother. He looks up to his sister and has followed her lead thus far in life. His passion, though, lies more in the instrumental side of making music, and he's responsible for mixing songs that he and Cassidy work on together under the name The Whitmores. Good natured and friendly but overly anxious and tends to overthink too much. Actually does his homework, unlike his sister.

Whitley Miller (she/her) - Geek, Bro, Slob - The ace of Britechester's ESports team, Whitley's entire life revolves around gaming, modding games, and, well, more games. She's already completed several small video games as well as dozens popular mods for various games. Though some could say she's a little.. Unorganized, but who has the time to clean their room anyway?

Kai Māhoe (he/him) - Adventurous, Active, Squeamish - Britechester's all star soccer player, Kai is an athlete through and through. Outside of soccer he also snowboards and rock climbs, having gained himself several sponsors while still being in college. He's hoping to study abroad for a year and go to Mt Komorebi in order to reach the summit of the famed mountain for which the area is named.

Zoe Cho (she/her) - Art Lover, High Maintenance, Vegetarian - An artist who holds her opinion in the highest regard. Dreams of becoming an art critic but only after having her work featured within every famed San Myshuno gallery's walls. I imagine she wears contacts but unfortunately that's not a thing in the game so... Her natural eye color is brown. Member of the Britechester Art Society.

Blake Nora (he/him) - Perfectionist, Bookworm, Loves the Outdoors - You might recognize Blake if you've seen my last sim dump. His cousin, Jennifer, and him are pretty much identical. Blake was created by accident while I was trying to figure out Jennifer's look and personality. Anyway, Blake's a devoted student but rather than go on daring adventures like his cousin he'd prefer a good book and a small garden. He's a member of The Debate Guild solely to put it on his resumed, as he hates confrontation and arguing... So basically everything about The Debate Guild.

Averie Stewart (she/her) - Dance Machine, Hot Headed, Noncommittal - A dancer and cheerleader pursuing a career in theater, hoping to one day travel the world performing, never settling anywhere. Loves to have fun and hang out with friends but don't get on her bad side. Fun fact: Her look was inspired a lot by K-pop group dance practice videos. Member of the Foxbury Spirit Squad.

Gus Richards (they/them) - Self-Absorbed, Genius, Glutton - A medium with psychic abilities and an ego that's waaay too big. They're going to revolutionize paranormal research (so they claim). Probably watched Ghostbusters one too many times as a kid. On Foxbury's robotics team.

hi francis!! i finally caved and got a gagaoolala subscription so i could support papa and daddy s2, so now that i'm here i wanna make the most of it! what are your must-see's on gaga?

Oh, my favorites on Gaga? SO MANY.

My Ride is a must. It's so darling and soft and just... absolutely glorious. Soft boys fall in love with lots of softness but with an adult twist, actual conflict and a pointless het couple in the background and a secondary pairing that was... okay. HIGHLY recommend.

My Esports Genius Brother is a censored BL out of China but it's very lightly censored and A+, tbh. I enjoyed it. Slightly surreal, a little bit fantasy, strange and odd but great.

The Lost Ring is an O2 short they made! Vietnamese BL in it's most basic elements. I love it. Obviously.

Innocent is strange and sweet and surreal and it does deal with mental illness and childhood abuse but mostly in a very soft and loving if not entirely realistic way. I adore this show but it's not for everyone.

Private Lessons is a Strongberry short that I love and it's on there, teacher and student in university and just... very, very good. Also by Strongberry, Long Time No See if you haven't seen the OG mafia BL movie!

Red Balloon is a great little show, serious but also sweet.

Takara-Kun and Amagi-Kun just started on there and I might be in love with this little thing?

I recommend Something Crunchy Crunchy just because it is the single most surreal and strange thing you'll ever see but, I mean, it's literally anthropomorphized candy bars singing and being gay... if... candy bars can even be gay?

I mean, they have My Beautiful Man and Mr Unlucky and a lot of good ones... I love La Cuisine but it's very slow. My enjoyment of Unforgotten Night is not because it's good...

A little monthly wrap-up of all the shows I’ve watched or am watching in December 2022, general thoughts, and ranking of them all.

Recommendation of the month:

To Sir, With Love is just so good if you’re into this sort of thing and I hope we get more lakorns with queer main characters and queer romances since it seems to be pretty popular in Thailand. This month I hope more people come across Love of Secret so that they also see there’s an audience for GL and make more.

Overall Impression: Pluem and Kevin, bro they were soooooo fucking cute just unbelievable I was cheesing throughout so many of their interactions. they really felt like people who liked each other and also just bounced off each other so well. Idek how I feel about the last 1.5 eps because in terms of writing, I have some qualms but like Kevin and Pluem are so cute that I can’t even think critically. Also, I love the deliberate choice of using you/I so much and what it means when it’s used vs not used (meung). The ghost stuff was intriguing and I’m glad they didn’t somehow make them come back or anything. I wish we got some more background in terms of how things actually worked and some more lore building but I’m still generally okay with the way it went, combining the comedy and sadness. I wish we had more of the GL rip

New Thoughts: One of the best things about the rewatch is truly just coming at it with the knowledge of Thai particle endings, titles and honorifics, and more of a cultural knowledge. Also can’t believe I rewatched so much of the show, usually I rewatch only parts I love. Continues to be my favourite BL of the year, hope something comes along next year that takes over my brain just as much to be honest.

The acting continues to be great and also I was less irritated during this rewatch bc I didn’t watch KP or KC or “plot”

Fave Scenes: a lot of the earlier interactions are cute, 6-4 choking out scene is insane fr the emotions and acting in that ah, 7-3 protest and pride, 7-4 Yok and Dan in Dan’s home, 8-1 Sean coming to White’s home and apologizing and baring his soul, 8-2 Yok being cheeky while painting Dan, 9-4 when Black and White meet again and Black takes back his piercings, 11-4 Sean finally finding out about Black vs White

Fave Scene: 9-1 the best section without a doubt - I loved how SeanWhite checked in on each other in the beginning and also afterwards with the “are you okay?” and it felt like they each actually cared about each other and the interactions held emotion more than the other “consent scenes” that make me feel like it’s just smth to check off rather than something you actually want to communicate to a partner and is also not cringey to watch. Also cheeky Yok coming over to Dan’s station at the end

When Nuea sulks or gets hurt by Toh’s carefully put on callousness or uncaringness (ep 3 him being annoyed that Toh keeps saying shit! everytime they met, 3-4, 5-3, 8-3 Nuea sulking at Toh insinuating Nuea might wanna break up in the future, 9-3 when Nuea’s upset that Toh didn’t say they were faen to the girls and told them to join what was gonna be their date, 13-3), it feels so real like the feelings really matter to Nuea and that he can be hurt by the lack of reciprocation.

Fave Scenes: 3-1 when Nuea visiting Toh’s dorm to see the photos he took, 3-4 when Nuea comes to Toh’s room to ask about why he left the event early and sulks and there’s hurt from both ends because each think the other doesn’t care T.T so good, 5-3 Nuea/Toh lip kiss because of the Kung King game and Nuea being so sad that Toh had no reaction and was brushing it off and saying it was just a game, 8-2 their little heart to heart after confessing in the last part about why Toh takes photos, 10-4 just friendly friends playing games, 13-3 when Toh’s collection is revealed and Nuea’s reaction to Toh insinuating their relationship will end and them baring their souls to each other

Overall Impression: saw a few clips of the show on tiktok and was thinking of watching it through these tiktok vids but now that I’m anticipating Bed Friend even more after the trailers, I think I’ll watch their parts on actual weTV lol. They made them both friendless, annoying losers who don’t have friends bc their classmates don’t like them but they still have money and get girls; it’s like two opposing tropes in one. Thought it was interesting that Foie was basically open about really liking Tan from after the kiss but he didn’t think they’d be good or that Tan was serious, so didn’t pursue anything. The car crash was a useless decision but the asking to be bfs scene was cute, though they disappeared from the story after that lol. They have really good chemistry and ability to play off each other, think that with some more acting skills, Bed Friend would have great chemistry/acting.

Overall Impression: Definitely enjoyable and also different from other BLs I’ve watched because this was a lakorn that had a huge component of Tian being gay but the actual romance took up very little screen time. Very dramatic, gives me Indian serial vibes. The acting, characterization, occasional action were all good. The focus on women, even though they were mostly fucked in the head, was also a welcome change in the midst of all my BL consumption.Yang and Tian’s brotherhood was everything!!! I love siblings and sibling bonds so much T.T Yang/Pin were also freaking adorable!! Tian and Jiu were not the biggest part of the story, didn’t really even have much interactions before ep 7 but they were sooo romantic.

Overall Impression: When Mek-Kim were cute, they were cute but there were some poor choices with their writing that made it boring sometimes or just lacked sense, like with the separation. Park-Lee my lovelies who call each other ‘ter’ and propose at the same time and are physically affectionate and have feelings like insecurity or jealousy. Bomb and Bear were so cute in the beginning but then became :< sad in the end but it felt like something that could happen with wonky work-life balance. Tim and Mai were sooo rancid and passive aggressive in the middle, I was liking it but then the confession was anti-climactic and then they fizzled out. This show had a lot of heart. Don’t think I’ll remember much except Park and Lee but it was a fun enough watch while it lasted.

It was cute and tackled a few things (Punpun working to realize her idol dream, her relationship with Tim, Punpun’s dad’s approval, Punpun’s aunt and the guy who keeps breaking watches, along with plenty of other characters and scenes), it would’ve been so good as a 10 ep show, oof. now it was a cute watch but too short and speedy to really empathize with what the characters are going through beyond the initial ‘oh that sucks’. I liked the stuff it focuses on: girlfriends, chasing dreams, (complicated) familial bonds and looking out for each other, but it would’ve been better if fleshed out

I know you're holding off on it but, I'm watching To My Star 2, and with them along with KimChay in KP I was wondering, do you have any famous/non-famous BL suggestions? I'm a sucker for that trope, but I've never been good at finding any good ones.

Hmmm. There aren't a ton. @absolutebl would probably know more than I do.

My first thought is Close Friend (last episode) and the entirety of Close Friend 2 which in which Jedi is a star, Ray has been his fan for years and they fall in love via VR and then have an entire romance. Bets part of both seasons.

There's a side pairing of minor internet celebrity/pining fan in My Secret Love but the show is super mediocre and I can't recommend it at all, nor do I know how it ends, nor do I think it fully counts. But it's here anyway!

Technically, History 1: Stay Away From Me is this? It's also stepbrothers and wholly unsatisfying to me but it feels like it hits this mark.

My Esports Genius Brother is this but also weird and semi-censored but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Rainbow Prince is secret undercover royalty? This but also secret most of the time so... only kind of this? But definitely a wild ride and if you like queer musicals and don't mind it being pretty Disney-esque it's worth it.

Step For You is a really darling short that's basically this but with a reporter and a dancer? Doesn't play into the famous/not famous a lot but is very enjoyable regardless.

My Beautiful Man has many, many elements of this and kind of turns into it towards the end and is also an 11/10 by me so, you know, you should watch it.

There are a few really bad ones that I'm not going to list here.

Lovely Writer kind of plays with this? But they're really mostly both famous... Ugh, there's a lot there kinda skirt this idea without ever really playing into it, honestly. Gameboys is another one, Cairo is a streamer but is he really famous? Gavreel is really his fan... I almost want to put The Devil Judge here but it's not a BL and it's not... really this? But it feels similar, again.

That's about as much as I've got? It's not the most common trope, though I wish it was, and there's probably a few I'm missing or miscategorizing.

Edit: I was reminded of the existence of Love Stage!! In multiple versions, I recommend the Thai one, it's my personal favorite by a longshot.

Vin's Top Anime/Manga that Need More Love

A sports/romance story with the best characters?? I say sports but it's a super niche card game about poetry. Goodness the growth of everyone has me screaming (especially Taichi!) and for a sports anime you actually can't tell if a main character is going to win or lose. I nearly had a heart attack watching some of their matches. Someone love this with me ✨

A Chinese 'anime' about esports. It really does the whole MC is a genius thing better than a lot of anime, and explains his OP skills well! It has older characters, and deals with getting older and trying to support yourself in a cutthroat world. Plus Glory is the coolest game ever~ If you've ever played an MMO I'd say watch it!

- Natsume's book of Friends

Okay. Okay okay? It's the sweetest "monster of the week" style anime that hits home about trying to find a place to belong. As many episodes made my heart sing, just as many made me cry like a fool because I wanted them all to be happy. The cutest MC, the cutest adoptive parents, the cutest friends. Everyone is your child that needs to be protected.

- Monster

I mean, it's classic. I only say it needs more love because it's an older story now-- but god is it still top tier. An adult themed anime about chasing a serial killer and whether or not everyone deserves a second chance. Takes place in Germany (and is apparently a 1 for 1 map view). Slow burn that has one of my favorite characters in any fictional story.... and he shows up nearly halfway through the plot. The main antagonist is truly terrible. The characters you love deserve the world. The ones you hate should burn in hell forever.

- Space Brothers

By now you'd probably guess I prefer slower, slice of life type stories. Dorky MC gets fired from his job and finally pursues his dream of becoming an astronaut after giving up on it for years. He's a step behind his little brother who is already an astronaut and fufilling his dream to walk in the moon. Another older aged cast, but I think everyone can put themselves in this story. It's heartwarming and inspiring!

- Mushishi

Is this unpopular? Not really sure but I need more people to talk about it with. Episodic and calming, it's really not the mainstream anime. A mysterious (and pretty ✨) man travels the world fixing illnesses and other strange happenings caused by mushi. Some are harmful, some are helpful, but most are just living in the world like humans. It's like watching a bedtime story in an art gallery. So beautiful~

- Angel Densetsu

Another older pick, which unfortunately only has a two episode OVA to its name. Imagine the sweetest, most kind teen to ever live-- now imagine his face to look like an axe murderer. Kitano is a fantastic person with the social awareness of sliced cheese. All he wants is friends but everyone is terrified of him... Not that he knows that. It's hilarious, if a bit dated, and definitely deserves to be read. Ugly manga art and all.

- Jellyfish Princess

A bunch of nerd ladies under one roof with a serious case of social anxiety. One day the MC meets a new friend that shakes up everything; plus dresses and romance and getting over your fears. It's adorable, and most of all relatable!

- Twin Spica

Another space story, this time with a young girl trying to follow her dreams. All the characters seem to be fighting their past to get where they want to be; whether it's trauma, lack of support, or the hardships of struggling. Not everything is easy, but the MC has her own extra moral support in lion-kun, who knows a thing or two about being an astronaut. Get ready to cry, and cry a lot.

- The Promised Neverland

A dash of horror, and a ton of mystery and suspense! A group of orphans live in the perfect, loving home (or so they think). Everything turns on it's head when the MCs find out the truth about their paradise, and your heart will hurt when you see what they go through to try and escape their fate~ I absolutely need to scream and theorize with more people!!

West Coast coach Adam Simpson has thrown a lifeline to struggling midfielder Lewis Jetta, saying if he can return to his damaging best he is a strong chance to reclaim a regular spot in the Eagles side this season.

The nippy winger was dumped after only nine touches against North Melbourne in the Eagles season opening win at Etihad Stadium in March and again after only 14 touches in a round three loss to Richmond at the MCG.

Simpson said the out-of-touch Jetta would continue to play for alignment outfit East Perth until he turns in a consistent batch of performances to warrant a recall.

“I don’t want to keep bringing him in and out of the side with hope,” Simpson said.

Jetta sat out of action last weekend as East Perth had a bye and only collected 17 possessions in his last outing for the Royals a fortnight ago.

The 28-year-old averaged just 13 disposals an outing in 12 games for the Eagles last season.

He is an unlikely candidate to play against an attacking Western Bulldogs in Friday night’s blockbuster in Perth to launch round eight.

“I want some good form at reserve level and if he can get that going we’ll bring him back,” Simpson said.

“We got him for a reason, to play seniors and help our speed and our run and carry.

“Obviously that hasn’t been quite delivered yet.

“But we’ve still got hope and we think there’s still another opportunity for him to have impact on the season.”

West Coast and Fremantle are targeting Adelaide forward Mitch McGovern.

But, while Simpson has kept the selection door open for Jetta to garner a recall, he baulked at joining the conversation surrounding the possible recruitment of Adelaide forward Mitch McGovern.

The younger brother of West Coast’s All-Australian key defender Jeremy McGovern is out of contract at the end of this season and looks certain to move back to his home state to join West Coast or Fremantle if he decides not to recommit to Adelaide.

“Look, it’s something that’s in the background,” Simpson told Fox Footy.

“Honestly, it’s not my job at the moment to be looking at those things.

“We do have list management committee meetings every two or three months.

“We will go through all of that stuff in back office.

“It won’t be something we’ll be doing through the media.”

However, Simpson did disclose that an important bunch of injured Eagles are on the verge of playing returns which would add critical depth to his options as West Coast approach their round 13 bye.

Veteran ruckman Drew Petrie is on the brink of resuming from a broken hand while aggressive forward Jamie Cripps (ankle) and defender Jackson Nelson (broken wrist) are tipped to resume over the next fortnight.

Cripps, 25, had initially been expected to miss up to two months when he hobbled out of the Eagles humiliating 50-point thumping from Hawthorn at the MCG three weeks ago.

Emerging on-baller Liam Duggan is close to a return against the Dogs after he missed West Coast’s spirited away win against Port Adelaide on Saturday with a corked right thigh.

“It’s really exciting to think about some of the injured players we might be getting back,” Simpson said.

“We think those four or five players can really compliment our side, we know we need to have the depth.”
