would we be able to request a npc flag? we have a lot of npcs that are *technically* part of our system but we'd like a flag to include them too
The format is based off the Now-PC(link) flag, with I have also remade in this post!
NPC, Now-PC, & NPC-flux
[PT: NPC, Now-PC, & NPC-flux]
NPC, (short for non-playable character) are constructs that are found in a system's headspace but are not part of the system itself or are notable distinct from other headmates in their autonomy, sentience, elaboration, or interaction. NPCs may serve to make the headspace feel more realistic, or fill in roles from a headmate's inner world history, e.g. a co-worker or family member.
Now-PC, A now-pc is a previously-NPC that is now a person in the system (someone who had previously been filler in a system, and now is an actual sentient person in system).
NPC-flux, may refer to a now-PC who will occasionally speak a repeated phrase or do an action that is triggered by a command of some sort. It could be a phrase or action they did when they were an NPC.

Tumblr media
Now-PC
An alter who was previously an NPC but is now a full alter.

NPC-Flux
The definition for this one doesn’t fully make sense to me so here it is just copy pasted:
NPC-flux may refer to a now-PC who will occasionally speak a repeated phrase or do an action that is triggered by a command of some sort. It could be a phrase or action they did when they were an NPC.

Hi! I absolutely love your work! And really wanted to thank you for putting in so much of your time and effort into creating what really is the best addition to Mass Effect ever! Out of curiosity how much new content do you reckon there will be in the LE version? Compared to the OT version that is. Thanks again for your work, you are truly a godsend!
Hi, thank you for your kind words!
There is a lot of new content for the Legendary Edition:
It features completely new and much higher quality audio across the board
It has several entirely new conversations
A mechanic which tracks what kind of approaches you take with Jeff, and he responds a little differently accordingly
It has reworked scripts with improved attention to narrative flow and adjusted pacing
Some reworked and improved animations
Fully supports both female and male Shepard
Fixed a narrative sequence issue that meant two of the four different Citadel endings I made for him could never trigger
Fixed a narrative sequence issue that meant several ambient NPC conversations I made for him in Citadel could never trigger
Fixed a narrative sequence issue that could cause EDI's second vanilla conversation about free will that takes place in Flux Bar to never trigger
Planned Content:
Joker as the Citadel date
The ability to tell Joker what happened to his little sister, unlocked by certain conditions
Over-the-radio comments during the DLC mission where Shepard returns to the SR1 on Alchera
Improved romance scene model
Various additional romance-specific dialogues
Nice-To-Have:
Occasional over-the-radio comments during certain missions
Additional ambient dialogue between Joker & some other NPCs
Dialogue for some NPCs acknowledging the relationship specifically, in keeping with vanilla LIs
Custom romance scene animations (Joker walking into the room with a limp, new action in the cutscene before the fade-to-black)
Honestly out of those the one I want most out of those is the most complex. I'm not sure how I'd manage to bake new animations for them that have the right coordinates. We do have the models with bones intact, but not their controls (IK handles, etc) so I'd probably need to rig them up. Rip the cabin environment & set it up in Maya for reference. Animate the scene, then bake & export. Possible, but time consuming. Would rather farm that out if possible, but... I'm not going to hold my breath, haha!

When I first started playing TotK, I wasn't sure if it would have a Guardian-equivalent enemy, and if it did, I wasn't sure how it would live up to the presence Guardians had in BotW. Now that I've encountered the Gloom Spawn/Gloom Hands (really they should have just been Floormasters), I think they at least live up to the Guardians, though I've yet to decide if they surpass them.
To really get into how the Guardians and Gloom Hands affect their respective games, I have to talk about how BotW creates a sense of danger through isolation and TotK creates a sense of security through companionship in their two starting areas. Despite their many similarities, the Great Plateau feels far, far more lonely than the Great Sky Island. The only NPC you can talk to, save for a few Koroks, is Rhoam, and outside of visiting his cabin, you only really interact with him when progressing the tutorial.
Contrast this with the Great Sky Island, which is filled with non-hostile characters. The Constructs are charming. They crack jokes and aim to be helpful. And they are everywhere. Rauru, who fills the role of Rhoam, doesn't just show up to progress the tutorial. He also just pops up to talk about things you encounter. The feelings of companionship even continue after the tutorial, since the first place you are expected to go after jumping off the island is a fortified settlement with people who know Link and are happy to see him alive. If you go to the first intended location after jumping off the Great Plateau, you probably won't see another person until you get to the Dueling Peaks Stable, and if you head straight for Hyrule Castle, you will be accosted by a whole bunch of Guardians.
The danger presented by enemies in both starting areas even continues to emphasize the difference in feelings of safety between the two starting areas. The Great Sky Island contains two enemies that are likely to kill you: the Flux Construct and the Captain Construct. Both of these are fairly well telegraphed, though. The Flux Construct is sitting in a giant, arena-like circle, and the Captain Construct is standing in a box right in front of a treasure chest. The Great Plateau has a similar boss monster and stronger enemy variant, but they are much less obvious. The Talus is camouflaged as a bunch of rocks and is encounterable by literally taking one wrong turn when you first gain control of Link. The Blue Bokoblin with a Soldier's Broadsword is also just randomly in an enemy camp. The Captain Construct at least has the courtesy to immediately show you that it can fuse weapons, an ability that you know makes weapons stronger, so that you know that you're in for a more dangerous opponent.
Perhaps the biggest difference between the Great Plateau and Great Sky Island is that the Great Plateau forces you to interact with Guardians. To get at one of the mandatory tutorial shrines, you have to get past some Decayed Guardians. These Guardians teach the player some important lessons. Guardians can and will one shot you. Even decayed ones have a ton of HP and killing them with weak weapons is not viable. Guardians that seem deactivated may reactivate unexpectedly. Guardians are large--large enough to see from a distance--so avoid them if you see one from far away.
The point of all this preamble is to establish how the two games set you up for their scary, dangerous, non-boss enemies that get their own track when aggro'd. BotW prepares you for it by forcing you to interact with them, making you learn how to deal with them, and creating a constant sense of danger to keep you on edge. TotK lulls you into a sense of security early on, and then shocks you out of it with that first Gloom Hands encounter. If you go the "intended" route, your first encounter with them should be in Lindor's Brow Cave, near the tower and the spot where Impa tells you about Dragon's Tears. I think this location works so well because 1) you will be immediately drawn to it while going up the path to the tower, 2) it's a cave, and 3) there's a shrine inside of it. The cave ensures that you can't see the sky, which turns the same shade of red as when a Blood Moon appears. The shrine distracts you from the gloom puddle as it moves towards you. Your only indication that something is happening is the new music and the visual effect that shows up when Gloom Hands spawn. It is perfectly set up to catch new players off guard.
The shrine does not serve just to distract you, though. It's also meant to teach you a simple way to escape Gloom Hands: you have to climb onto a shelf in the cave to get to the shrine, and Gloom Hands can't climb walls. Entering the shrine or waiting around a little bit also reveals that Gloom Hands will just leave after a while. After an initial scare and, perhaps, a few deaths, Lindor's Brow Cave teaches you basically everything you need to know about Gloom Hands, at least for the early game. It also breaks that feeling of safety that the game presented early on and colors the rest of the early-to-mid game when you don't have the resources to properly deal with them. Unlike Guardians, these things are far less obvious, seeming to appear anywhere, at anytime, with very little warning. You have to always keep in the back of your mind that there might just be Gloom Hands somewhere near by.
The Gloom Hands also have one final trick for those that played BotW and became adept at dealing with Guardians. For the most part, once you figure out the perfect parry timing, Guardians are pretty simple to deal with. Your reward for becoming decent at fighting Guardians was the rare, ancient materials they dropped. Those who think they can deal with Gloom Hands similarly are in for a surprise. The Gloom Hands are pretty resource intensive early on. The best way to deal with them safely is to use arrows with elemental effects, which you probably don't have a ton of when you first encounter the Hands in Lindor's Brow Cave. Also, if you aren't fast enough, they will just start regenerating. Once you manage to beat them, you don't get rare materials, you get a miniboss that can oneshot you at that point, especially if the Gloom Hands inflicted you with gloom. Admittedly, the boss is not that difficult if you don't panic; the flurry rush timing is pretty generous and the attacks are clearly telegraphed. And your reward for defeating the boss? Two weapons that have gimmicks relating to health, making them less useful in the early game.
I think that Guardians will probably remain more iconic from both a design and story perspective. Nothing quite hits like encountering a field of decimated Guardians early on and then discovering later that Link was the one who destroyed them. That being said, I think Gloom Hands do a better job of evoking panic in players. The sky changing color, the music playing, the fact that they appear out of seemingly nowhere, the fact that they basically have to be right on top of you to attack, the fact that they are living creatures instead of just being machines. All these things contribute to them being more intimidating to face than Guardians. I still can't make a call on which I think is handled better until I spend some more time with TotK, but I would not be surprised if in the end it just comes down to personal preference

Not to get Real on the main, but I really think we as a society need to talk about puberty and adolescence more. Because right now, everybody just sort of skirts around the reality of it. Even when adults try to talk to kids about it, they do a terrible job of preparing them for the full brunt of it. And what's worse, puberty has started to become inexorably linked to the idea of complete self-discovery and realization, to the point that it seems like everyone between the ages of 12 and 20 is in a self-identification arms race, desperately scrambling to decide who they are, when in reality, they are at the worst possible stage in their lives to do that.
Puberty is a lot more than just reaching sexual maturity. It's actually an entire phase of your life that can take years to pass through, and it involves way more than getting your first period or starting to feel super horny. Once Mother Nature hits you with her Adolescence Bat, your mind and body are going to be in a state of flux for at least five years, probably more. Not only do you have the physical discomfort of weird new biological functions, you're also going to feel very self-conscious and awkward. You're going to feel mentally ill, regardless of whether or not you actually are. You're going to feel anxious about the future, and pressured to figure out who you are and what you're going to do with your life. Everyone else in your age group will likely be pretending that none of this is happening to them, which will further reinforce the idea that there's something wrong with you. You might feel like a blank canvas, a background character, with no personality, no future, no real reason to be in the scene at all. And that can be really. Freakin. Scary. And it's also perfectly normal.
I dunno, I guess all I want to say is, if you're between the ages of 12 and 20 and experiencing all the crap that comes with that time of your life (or really any time of your life), it's okay to take it one day at a time. It's okay to just focus on the basics: eating and sleeping, doing your homework, being kind to others, and having fun. There's nothing wrong with you for feeling...well, wrong. What you're going through is natural, and it will take a few years, but I promise you, it does get better. You will find friends who love you for who you are, even if you haven't completely figured out who that is yet. You'll learn things about yourself by trying new hobbies and talking to people, and that feeling of being a nameless NPC will gradually fade away. And to any parents/guardians whose kid is going through this, try to be patient with them. They're going through a lot, even if it looks like they're perfectly fine on the outside. Make sure they know you love them, even when they pretend not to care, and that your love is unconditional. That can go a long way in helping a child grow into a successful adult.
When I was 16, I felt like I had no personality, that I brought nothing of worth to the world. I couldn't have told you who I was to save my life. But over the years, I slowly grew into the person I am now. I'm a storyteller, an artist, a gamer, a listener, a jokester, a noodle-armed pansy, someone who tries to prioritize being kind above everything else (to varying degrees of success and failure). And who knows who I'll be in another ten years! There's no end to the number of things I still have to learn, or ways in which I can grow, and I hope I never have to stop.
Edit: Also delete your TikTok and Instagram accounts. Trust me, this is genuinely the best thing you can do for yourself rn.

Hey Josh, I just read “Into the Riverlands,” and loved it. I was so thrilled that I wanted to try my hand at making my own short system-neutral setting. What principles do you recommend following when writing a setting to be used in potentially any game? What’s most useful to include for players and GMs?
Oh this is a fun ask! First, thank you! Super happy that people are enjoying the Riverlands!
This is definitely not going to be a definitive guide on making system-neutral settings, but it at least worked for me!
First of all, my number one piece of advice is always to find things you like, and try and figure out how they accomplished it! For me, my main points of inspiration were Rakehell and A Thousand Thousand Islands. They're both some of my favorite settings books/zines so I drew on them a lot as I was planning what was going into Riverlands.
Both Rakehell and ATTI heavily use random tables as a way to convey information about their world in addition to impactful bursts of prose (versus say, a setting book that is more info-dumping and exposition. There's a time and place for that, but I knew that wasn't my goal with Riverlands). Random tables are cool because they can be manifold when it comes to functionality. You can write them to be used an active game element (as a way to deliver/decide randomized elements and choices) but also as a way to present a list of Interesting Things about your setting. When something is rolled on a random table, it becomes "real", but the rest of the options unrolled and still in flux, still communicate a lot of information about the setting, but as suggestions and impressions! The table could use any unrolled options, just picking them out from the table, but they can also inspire a player and GM to add to the setting using what you've written as a foundation!
Random tables are just really compact and elegant ways of delivering a lot of layered information!
I think a setting that is good for playing in leaves purposeful spaces that the table is invited to fill in, to make it their own. Random tables are one way to do this, but also it comes down to the writing. You need to find a balance of providing just enough interesting information so that the table has an immediate idea on how they could play with it, but just enough left unanswered so that the table can play and fill in that space.
I've really been thinking about how game elements should feel like little toys that players can pick up and play with. And the setting is just an extension of that metaphor. What pieces of this setting can be played with at the table? Does that mean locations to visit? Rumors of strange events? Interesting NPCs with their own goals? Legendary items to go searching for? What does it do and how can the table interact with it?
So for Riverlands, I wanted the bulk of the zine to be these "play-pieces"; things that the table could grasp onto and would want to explore because they communicate interesting parts of the setting! The biggest way I did that was with the backgrounds. They are presented as different kinds of peoples and things that people can do within that setting, and then they invite the players to explore all of that through their characters. All the other non-background tables are just more GM-facing "play-pieces"; things the GM can pick up and place in front of the players, but they still communicate the flavor and tone of the setting.
So I think at the end, taking into consideration how all the different elements of your setting might be picked up and played with, as if they were toys while still packing all of those pieces with interesting bits of flavor and potential is the thesis of my advice.
Also add in lots of random tables.
Here's a link to Riverlands for those interested!

Very Gay Notes for Pride
Tumblr media
I've posted a few times about gender and sexuality in my game world, as well as about character sexual orientations. Some stuff has changed a bit as I've gotten to know our characters better, though. So here's an updated list of characters whose stories touch on non-cisgender and non-heterosexual themes directly in-game. As Avalon operates on a pre-modern concept of sexuality, I do not use modern labels in the game. Heterosexuality and homosexuality just aren't concepts yet, so characters think more in terms of sexual preferences than having the idea that they were born with a particular orientation. I use labels here for ease of understanding for modern readers.
Marion is bi/pan, she romances characters regardless of gender, which just isn't particularly important to her in terms of who she's attracted to. In our prologue, you learn that she's had liaisons with both men and women in the past.
John is bi/pan, and it's officially part of the game's plot now as his previous relationship with a man during the Nibirian War is discussed. (Poor man got dumped. Why? Stay tuned! Don't worry, he's single and ready to mingle now, he's had time to get over it.)
Meissa is non-binary (not agender - they would describe themselves as full of gender) and bi/pan with a slight preference for femme-presenting lovers. Thanks to Nibirian shapeshifting magic, they are able to be in the body that works best for them. I neither know nor care what their original body looked like. Nibirians think of both gender and sexuality as fluid, and that fact is woven into their society.
Alanna was originally conceived as bi/pan, but I later decided that she's lesbian. She has no sexual interest in men, though she'll flirt with anybody - it's part of the job.
Geoffrey is demisexual and demi- or aromantic, and it's an identity that he's still discovering during the course of the game. His sprite is not in our photo because it's in flux right now, but he is a full and important part of our LGBT+ cast!
Theo is gay, monogamous, and married to another nobleman. He is sadly unkissable (unless you are his husband).
Roan is a major NPC that y'all haven't really met yet, but they are agender. They're a changeling - a former fae who decided to forego their near-immortality and become mortal - and are a scout for Robin's rebellion. Fae do not have genders as a natural state, but some greater fae develop gender preferences as they interact with humanity. Roan has not done so and seems uninterested in doing so.
Avalon doesn't have a concept of sex as sinful, though it is generally meant to be a part of the private sphere (something done "in shadow," which does not connotate evil, merely private). Commoners in Avalon freely choose life partners regardless of gender. The nobility has a bias toward heterosexual marriage because of an obsession with continuing noble bloodlines, but nobles having same-sex lovers on the side is common and considered unremarkable.
Regardless, some nobles like Marion and Theo struggle with the expectation that they'll marry heterosexually. Theo's marriage to another nobleman caused some ripples in both families, but he put his foot down about it.
Avalon is a society built on binary concepts, and unfortunately the gender binary is one of them. Transgender people who are part of that binary are quietly accepted, but being non-binary isn't a concept in society at large. The language does have an ungendered singular pronoun (useful when you're speaking of somebody whose gender is unknown), which I approximate with they/them. That's why Marion easily adapts to Meissa and Roan with they/them pronouns.
Other societies in the world are not like that. As I mention, Nibiru considers gender and sexuality to be fluid. They don't even have gender pronouns - they use the terms "bringer" and "bearer" to denote people of reproductive age who can sire or birth children, but those terms are purely mechanical and aren't necessarily connected to male or female gender.
Sunjata is a "third-gender" society. Their deity, Amun, was originally considered male (and is sometimes referred to with male pronouns), but took on other genders upon devouring all other gods and becoming the sole deity of the land. Trans and non-binary people occupy a third gender between male and female in their society. This third gender (I haven't named it yet, need to do more research) is considered sacred to Amun and worthy of respect. In general, gender is less important than skill and ability in Sunjati culture.

Hi! I’m not sure if you will see this or even reply to this but I do want to say that I want to show a lot of appreciation for your blog and your breakdowns about TopMew so much. I saw your post about only friends being a morality drama and the idea of media literacy and it made me reflect a lot about myself as a viewer.
You spoke a lot of truths in your post. I think a lot of viewers resort to archetypes (e.g. TopMew) or comparisons (e.g. Top vs Ray) when they find characters on “different sides of the same coin” or stereotypes that they can associate characters with. But at the end of the day, these characters don’t have the same upbringing/backstories/personalities. Ngl I do admit my opinions do get swayed sometimes by other meta posts because it’s difficult to find meta posts that analyse TopMew without turning them or their actions into something rancid/evil or there’s a lack of TopMew analysis. Your analysis posts have truly been a gift.
I agree 100% that accountability is a major theme here. I’m guessing other people brought in ephemerality due to the idea that these characters are still in college, hence they are more likely to act without thinking about the consequences. But accountability is very much the bigger picture imo. I just don’t get the idea of being a “___ defender/apologist”. As a FB stan, I do like TopMew, especially Mew. But do I excuse their wrongdoings? No. I can enjoy and like them while acknowledging their misdeeds. All I need is to understand is their rationale behind it.
I also see a lot of viewers constantly trying to push ideas what they want the characters to do ___ (E.g. TopMew doing a threesome with Boeing, really?). More people need to realise this show is not made to fulfil people’s fantasies. I mean MewRay happened, which was clearly what the majority were against. I think it’s also important to keep in my mind what would make sense for these characters to do (e.g. what are their best interests, their characterisation). My only fear right now is if Jojo and his crew would try to appease the majority, given that they cut out a Top scene from EP7 based on fans’ reactions. Are they going to bring justice to these characters’ actions and consequences by the end of the series based on how accountable/responsible they are? Or is it just going to be based on what the majority wants?
I want to thank you again for speaking out about this. I love your posts, especially the ones on Top’s wounded inner child, the Madonna-Whore complex on TopMew, TopMew working on the hostel project. I also love it so much about how TopMew can be linked to “Young and Beautiful” by Lana Del Ray (I just vibe with it so much). I think we the FB fandom can agree that ForceBook has brought so much to their characters and we’re so proud of them. Thanks for reading!
You are so sweet!! 🥰 and thank you very much. foxmochi hug!
Oh! Is that what people mean by ephemerality? I honestly do not understand lol. Because life is also ephemeral? No one is guaranteed a tomorrow.
Right? Human beings are complex. And people treat TopMew as morality foils or NPCs. And in real life, no one is a side character, you know what I'm saying? No one is an actual villain except well, Boston, but I actually think his storyline is going to get justice. Boston looks like he's going to have an introspective moment in the preview and I am here for it.
Okay, I actually do know where that comes from. Mond re-tweeted this pic adding "I'd like to be friends too."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this
Tumblr media
While I'm down for a little jealous Mew and Boeing testing him, Top & Mew have only ever wanted to be with each other. And the confirmation that one of the deleted scenes being Top trying to move on, but not being able to, really confirms this. So I'm gutted we didn't get it.
Yes, that was a bit surreal to hear from Jojo. And it makes me uneasy.
Like the story of the series is in flux when it shouldn't be. And those theories about re-shoots 🙃 I'm just going to remember that FB would have told us if they did re-shoots. Being the spoiler kings they are and the foxmochi thai superfans definitely would have known.
Top & Mew are almost there. They just need to have honest communication and not the kinda cautious communication they had when they were courting. And I need FB to have at least one scorching hot sex scene so absolutely no one can deny that TopMew and FB have chemistry coming out of their eyeballs. And I think FB as artists would be down to do it.
Tumblr media
Okay, you're going to get my Ray take because I have written it and I don’t want to make a separate post.
Not once in the show does Ray try to curb his drinking. It's one thing to try and then to slip, you are at least trying, but not once has Ray ever said, no I'm trying to cut back. He doesn't and has never seen it as a problem even after the accident.
Ray needs to learn that while trauma might explain why he does what he does, it is not an excuse. Ray needs to do some soul-reckoning. Some people want it be a case of "Love conquers All" and *dun dun da dun, insert hero fanfare here* Sand is going to swoop in and save Ray from himself without losing himself in return. But Sand and his presence are not enough to make Ray change. Ray must want it for himself. Read any article on how to handle addiction for loved ones and they all say this. And this is actually the hardest and most painful life lesson I've ever had to learn in my life. People have to want to change and as much as you can want it, no matter how much you beg, nothing will change unless they want for themselves.
I am actually really sad that in the preview Ray says he'll go to rehab if Sand wants him too. It's only Sand, he's thinking about? Not himself, not his friends, not his dad, or his fellow humans? It's really weak character development. He still lacks the ability to be introspective or think about others. Ray has to do some honest soul-discovery before he can be a good partner to anyone. And I'm praying that it's still coming. Please, show, please do this for Ray.
I know I'm basically preaching to the choir at this point but whatever, I want these posts to exist because sometime from now, after the show finishes airing, someone will come to Tumblr and find one of these posts. And TopMew deserve the right to context.
You are the sweetest. Yes, I love "Young and Beautiful" for them. And I agree, ForceBook have done an amazing job in OF.
And just remember whatever weird stuff is happening here, Thai fans LOVE them and don’t overanalyze TopMew.
I hope you have a wonderful day, hun and thank you for dropping by my mailbox~ You made my day 💕

Do you think it's possible to write a good fic i n 1POV set in Patho? What would be the best POV character?
i'm sure it's possible, though it's been a long time since i tried to write anything in first person point of view. i got the impression somewhere along the line that writing in first person was amateurish, which as an adult i think is frankly ridiculous because there's a lot out there that's written in first person. it fits some mediums and stories better than others. it fits some characters better than others.
as to which character would work the best - that's really up to the writer! writing a character from any point of view requires a strong grasp on their characterization, but i think with first person it's most evident because you have to have a good sense of what their internal voice sounds like too. how do they conceive of themself? how do they talk to themself? are they different alone vs when they're with other people, and if so, how does that manifest? are they observant? how do they interpret events? do they lie to themself?
i think it also depends a lot on what you want to do with your work. do you want to describe the town and its inhabitants? then you probably want to write as dankovksy. artemy would comment on the way things have changed and people he hasn't met before, but as he's from the town it's not likely he'd be describing it much unless he has a good reason to (like if he's writing to someone who's never been there). it's the same with npcs who have been there a while. if you want to describe the plague, then the best character would change depending on how you want to describe it, because each of the healers (and i'm including rubin in that group) would have their own thoughts and vocabulary to describe what they're dealing with.
personally, i think clara would be the most interesting point of view character to write from (and read from) because her identity is in flux. but i also think she'd be the hardest, because the fandom tends to reduce her to a 4th wall breaking walking meme generator.
either way, best of luck with your writing endeavors, anon!

Working on NPCs, been making a lot of smaller character sprites. A few of these are characters belonging to friends of mine. This game was originally run as a TTRPG, and the respective PCs are included in here.
Tumblr media
Their characters, from left to right:
Carmelle: UntitledSunny Digby: Oclarina August: @flux-yggdrasil Florence: @winklekinkle

The rest are my own, again from left to right:
Jack Tango Steele Officer Cloverfield

I've got quite a bit more work to do, and a lot more characters to put together. Roark is a small town, so I want the people who call it home to feel distinct. I'll be putting out more updates soon. Until then!

Garrus is Wren's second in command starting shortly after his recruit in ME2, on default, and during all of ME3 that he's a part of the crew meaning since Palaven (ME1 is Pressly, like in canon; she's too new to being in command of an entire ship to question the order of command). If your muse is literally Miranda, since she's canonically ME2 second in command, I will for our interactions, keep it as Miranda, on default. If your muse is Garrus, I won't assume he's in this position unless you tell me that's fine. If your muse is not canonically Shepard's XO, but for your portrayal in roleplay default they are, it's still going to be Garrus unless we plot it out ooc, and it has to make sense from Wren's point of view. Her second in command needs to be both someone she trusts to go by her values and trusts her life with, and someone with experience in leading a team. Garrus is, by default, her best friend, as an NPC. He also has leadership experience as Archangel, the game canonically recognises him as having leadership qualities during the suicide mission, and he's never had an issue following her lead, meaning she trusts him to do what she would do, not act as an XO by his own values, in the case of clashes. Please don't be offended if I keep it as Garrus. Obviously, this only applies to Wren; if we're interacting on my other muses, and your muse is Shep's second in command by default to your portrayal - canon or not, I will default my muse to it as well, as we're writing with a vague Shepard, rather than my Shepard. Same goes for verses where Wren is not in the "Shepard role". I am not the authority on who Shepard picks as her XO, I'm only the authority on who Wren picks. Nine times out of ten, unless your muse is canonically XO, I will keep it as Garrus. I don't mean this to disrespect your headcanons, I just... don't think it's fair to ask me to modify my muse for their sake, either, seeing as it is Wren, who makes that decision, if she is Commander Shepard in a verse. Also, how much your muse means to her, how close they are, has nothing to do with this decision. She might be best friends with your muse, in a relationship with them, your muse might even meet the requirements (goes by Wren's values, Wren trusts her life with them, leadership experience) and it will still be Garrus nine times out of ten because it will probably make sense to her portrayal.
I love Miranda. But it'd be out of character for Wren to not take control of the Normandy enough to demand she names her own second in command, and they do start off kind of rough; she doesn't trust Miranda until later, until her loyalty mission and knowing her better, by default. Like I love Miranda but my default for them becoming actual friends is around Miranda's loyalty mission; but they do become friends. This is not about character hate, it's about what's in character for Wren. And as I said, when I interact with Miranda blogs, I will default to Miranda being in her canonical position, as I don't wish to undermine other muses' canon at all. (In this case insert Cerberus bullshit as the reason why she can't appoint Garrus to XO.)
I use the EGM and Spectre Expansion mods for ME3 along with heavily modding the ending, and I believe it's EGM that adds it, but like I can assign positions on the ship, and I have Garrus, canonically to my gameplay for Wren, as her second in command on the third game.
Tumblr media
Also, Tali is appointed Chief Engineer when a part of the crew, in place of Adams. But the rest is more or less in flux for roleplay purposes (mainly because fuck if I know what half of the full manifest even means lol I am really pretending I know what the fuck I'm talking about most of the time here)
I will not, ever, fuck with your muse's military rank. If you say your muse has a different rank than canon? I will roll with it. I will support it one hundred percent. I love diverging from strict canon. A muse's rank isn't Wren's business. It's simply a matter of who she would appoint to an important position on her ship. Same goes for squadmates becoming Spectres. I mean it when I say I'm super flexible with things, as long as I can make it make sense for Wren's portrayal. Like, if your muse needed a Shepard recommendation to being appointed a Spectre. 99 out of 100 safe to say I can make it make sense she would. If your portrayal is insistent on some big choice in the game Shepard makes being different to my default worldstate. I can most likely make it make sense as well. For example: No. I will not make it where she wants the geth destroyed rather than to have the quarians make peace with them. However, I will make it where she tried but failed. We're not limited to what's possible in the games, here, people. Give it an external factor that made the attempt fail. If it's about her values. Her words. Her emotions. Her opinions. I won't compromise who Wren is for the sake of someone else's muse. I will, however, gladly compromise the actual events. Bring in new factors. Make shit fail, outside of her control. Make her make mistakes, even.
But things where it's directly her decisions. If your muse, who canonically is not already Shepard's second in command, in your portrayal is? And you want to keep it that way for our interactions? She still would, most likely, ask Garrus first. Maybe your muse was her second choice, maybe we can justify that for her, maybe Garrus as an NPC simply did not agree to the position. I am flexible. But I am flexible in "third factor" kind of ways. Not in Wren's... self.
