Movies I watched and books I read this Week #127 (Year 3/Week 33):
The Fury of a Patient Man, a tense Spanish thriller about a man who waits 8 years to take revenge on the killers of his fiancé.
🍿
2 tender Japanese dramas by female director Naomi Kawase plus another by Yasujirō Ozu:
🍿 Tokyo Twilight, my 6th Ozu drama. A story about an older, single father, two grown up sisters, a mother who left and then came back, an unplanned pregnancy and a death of a daughter. Tragic, subtle and patient family soap opera, his last film that was beautifully shot in black and white.
🍿 I used to enjoy eating Dorayaki, the cookie-snack made of two small bean-filled pancakes, which we often bought at ‘Ranch 99’ stores. Kawase’s Sweet bean is a slow, emotional food porn story, about a solitary owner of such a small Dorayaki store. He hires a 76-year-old woman with a recipe for a better red bean filling, as well as a dark personal secret. Gentle and poetic.
🍿 I was curious about her earlier (1992) art film Embracing because of (personal) reasons. It’s a cinema-verite exploration of her own search for her father, who had left her and family when she was a small girl. Meditative poem about abandonment, loss and identity.

Eveready Harton in Buried Treasure is the first-ever hard-core, triple-X pornographic cartoon from 1928. It was made clandestinely by certain unknown illustrators from three studios, Disney, Max Fleischer and the Mutt and Jeff studio. It's as explicit as you can get, and involves masturbation, intercourse, bestiality, anal penetration, dildos, ejaculation, and so much more. 🍿 The disappointing new computer-animated Elemental was the first Pixar product I couldn’t finish. A shallow 100% Disneyfied world building that started at a Disney cruise, and moved into a mythical Disneyland, without a heart or a soul. 1/10.

Because I'm a political masochist, I watched the 4-hour 2020 documentary The Reagans. I always held that this despicable puppet-master, was the most destructive modern American president, even more than Nixon. A good looking elitist, affable reactionary, a nicely-smelling, racist piece of shit, who changed America for the worst, and laid the foundations for all the horrors that were later Donild Trump. As Higgins told Condor: "You poor dumb son of a bitch. You've done more damage than you know."
I have to stop watching movies about monsters.

Paco León Spanish sex comedy 'Kiki, Love to love' that I saw last week, was kinky, delightful and original. So I was surprised to read that it was a remake of an Australian film. However, The little death had no juice at all, it was forced, prurient, unfunny and worst of all - unsexy. 2/10.

On the flight from Denmark to Israel I read the “erotic” thriller Skinny Dip. I used to like Carl Hiaasen years ago, but this story of a wife who survives being thrown from the deck of cruise ship, was mediocre pulp. The worst part was the Hebrew translation, which made it unreadable. 1/10.

Book Reviews — Reading at School Again
I only read 2 books today, instead of four, but the first one was pretty thick. The kids were very impressed when I offered it to one of them after I finished it. “You read 390 pages in half an hour?” No. I read 390 pages in…2.5 hours, maybe? I started around 9:15 and finished around 11:30, maybe? I finished the second book before 2:15. What can I say? I’m a fast reader and they were both good books.
I rate both The Vengekeep Prophecies and Becoming Naomi León 4 stars! More info about both of them under the cut.
That’s not a very good summary, but if it sounds interesting at all, I encourage you to pick up this book. It’s a middle grade fantasy and it really is fun. I picked it out of the classroom library because I recognized the illustrator — Brett Helquist! If you’ve read any of the Series of Unfortunate Events books, you’ll recognize his art. I haven’t heard of the author Brian Farrey before, but he did a nice job creating fun characters and an interesting plot. I’d definitely offer this to any fourth grader looking for a fantasy adventure story. I also checked out the sequel on my library app because I want to know what happens next!

Becoming Naomi León is by Pam Muñoz Ryan, the author of another book I love, Esperanza Rising. Unlike that book, this one is a fairly contemporary book (rather than historical fiction). In this story, Naomi and her brother live with Gram, their great-grandmother. They have a pretty happy life…that gets turns upside down when their long-lost mother whirlwinds into town. It’s a story about figuring out who your true family is and finding your voice. There were parts of it that were genuinely scary to me and I think it could spark a lot of discussion in a class. There were also parts where I wanted to scoop Naomi up and give her a big hug. I loved that she had supportive grownups in her life, including the librarian at her school who offered her books he thought she’d enjoy “with a flourish”. I really recommend it too! I love the way Pam Muñoz Ryan uses language and the way she crafts characters.

Book you’ve reread the most times?
Hmm, this one's kinda hard cuz I LOVE re-reading books, but I did read The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe like....20 times one summer. Idk why I just got really involved in it and I would finish it and then flip it over and start again, and it's a really short book so I blew through it Quite A Few Times before my stepdad told me he'd take it away if I didn't read something else.
Aside from that...I think it might actually be either The Princess Bride OR the novelization of Star Trek 2009. Both are just so good and SO re-readable <3

Juárez mostró supremacía en Taekwondo de Juegos Estatales Conade 2023
Finalizada la segunda etapa del taekwondo en los Juegos Estatales Conade 2023, la delegación de Ciudad Juárez se proclamó con los máximos ganadores en las categorías 10-11, 12-14, 15-17 y 18-20 años.
El primer lugar fue para el selectivo de Juárez, segundo puesto para Chihuahua, Cuauhtémoc se ubicó en el tercer lugar, Jiménez y Nuevo Casas Grandes el cuarto y quinto sitio respectivamente.
En algunos resultados de la segunda etapa, la categoría 15-17 años, división -52 kilogramos, de la rama femenil, la medalla de oro fue para Carolina Márquez y Grecia Hamilton, ambas de Ciudad Juárez, mientras que los bronces fueron para Alejandra Rey de Cuauhtémoc y Sofía Barrón, representante del municipio de Jiménez.
Asimismo, en la división -55kg, Mia Ovalle de Juárez ganó el primer lugar, compartió pódium con Sofía Saldamando (Chihuahua) y las juarenses Luna Rubio y María Esther Zavala en el tercer lugar.
Los seleccionados estatales se enfrentarán a sus similares de la región del próximo 17 al 19 de marzo en Tijuana, Baja California, para buscar un lugar en Juegos Nacionales Conade.
