Alrighty fellow insane sonic fans i have something very cool for you today: a WORLDBUILDING theory!! this is something that's been kicking around in my head for so long that i forget it isn't something I've shared with many others yet lol

[ This post primarily covers stuff from Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Advance, and ignores Sonic Chronicles and Sonic Pocket Adventure as they have been struck from canon (see: Encyclo-speed-ia) ]

[ It should also be noted that this theory is built on the idea that "the world" as depicted in Sonic Forces is not accurately depicting the entire globe, but rather depicting Eggman's takeover of just the island archipelago where the animal cast lives (South Island, West Side Island, Mirage Island, Northstar Islands, Angel Island) as to explain its geography and lack of human characters ]

Right! So, a big theme in the environmental design of the original Sonic Adventure was having the Sonic cast sort of "cross over" into the human world more - the wording on this was initially nebulous, but with updated translations and clearer official word recently, we now know that it means that the "human world" is moreso like a mainland populated by humans that exists separately from the animal-inhabited island archipelago of Sonic 1, 2, CD, 3&K and Superstars (see: Sonic Origins). My immediate first point of comparison - of all things - is something like the first Madagascar movie, where the lemurs are able to be a fully functioning society in a region completely isolated from humans.

Except it's not quite like that movie, is it? We see in Sonic Adventure (and further in Unleashed, 06) that animal characters like Sonic and c.o are able to exist just fine within the human world, to where Amy has flat-out moved into Station Square. Big and Tails, too, have settled down by the Mystic Ruins close to where Angel Island (sometimes) crashes down by, Rouge owns a club in Sonic Battle - you get the gist. Animal characters, the majority population of the islands as we see in Forces and the IDW series, are able to migrate into the "mainland" human societies, but it appears to still be a rarity, likely not even something everyone has the opportunity to do (Big might've been born on Angel Island, Tails and/or Sonic can fly any of Sonic's friends to wherever they want to go, etc.). The most contact humans have with the animal world is through the Mystic Ruins site, or Eggman using his excessive wealth to fly in and try and effectively colonize the islands as we see in Sonic 1, 2, Superstars, CD, 4.1 and 4.2 (for note: CD, 4.1 and 4.2 take place on the same island of Mirage Island)

Sonic Adventure 2's level select is obviously to be taken with a grain of salt as a stylized take on a world map, but it seems to infer the same thing that Origins' main menu and Angel Island's close proximity to the Mystic Ruins both corroborate - the island archipelago inhabited by the animal characters seems to be quite close to the mainland "United Nations" landmass, most evidently close to Rouge's Route 280 level. And given how often Eggman lays his sights on the islands as a primary target for his schemes (Heroes may well also be taking place on the islands, as Seaside Hill is confirmed to be near/on South Island), it would make sense from the United Nations' POV to try and make access to the islands more accessible. For example, to enable easier import and export of goods, help citizens evacuate from possible disaster (eg. how the Metal Virus in IDW described how it was impossible to evacuate to anywhere else but Angel Island), and so on - a way to connect the two societies more smoothly only makes sense.

With ALL that context and preamble out of the way, this is my theory, and where Sonic Advance finally comes into the picture:

Radical Highway in Sonic Adventure 2, and later Neo Green Hill Zone from Sonic Advance, were together depicting a brief attempt to connect South Island to the United Nations mainland.

You may think this is a bit of a nutty conclusion to draw given how little of a story Sonic Advance actually has, but I think there's a lot we can glean from just the environmental design of Neo Green Hill Zone alone. Compared to the original Green Hill Zone, and most of the levels in the Classic Sonic games that aren't just flat-out urban cities/facilities seemingly built under Eggman's control (Star Light, Spring Yard, Chemical Plant), Neo Green Hill Zone's touches of human infrastructure are far more...friendly, for a lack of a better word. There's parasols and wooden scaffolding, a grind rail or two along paved sidewalks, yet the natural beauty of the area is left entirely in tact. Nothing about it appears like Eggman's work, yet it is quite evidently structured for human interests, for tourism and walking/biking rather than all the funky ways in which Sonic's animal cast are comfortable moving around. Then there's of course the name: NEO Green Hill Zone, as if it's reinvigorating the idea for a fresh new facelift, re-marketing it!

But how does all that connect to Radical Highway?

Radical Highway (and Mission Street by extension) have a quirk unique to them when compared to almost all other urban city levels in the series - as you can see in the image above, they're themed around still being under construction. Compared to a level like Lethal Highway from Shadow the Hedgehog (or the aforementioned Route 280 from SA2) the holes and gaps in Radical Highway are presented as being specifically because the winding roads are still under construction. You can see this on the level map above too - Route 280 and Route 101 appear to be part of a long, linear, already-finished stretch of road, wheras the area of Radical Highway and Mission Street is filled with gaps, inlets and breaks in the road. Route 101/Route 280 already appear to fill the function of letting people cross between the two city areas depicted on Adventure 2's world map...so then, what exactly is the construction and general wobblyness of Radical Highway for?

Well, let's look at Sonic Advance again: Specifically, the end of the Neo Green Hill Zone stage, and the way the game progresses immediately thereafter:

The natural beach environment of Neo Green Hill Zone Act 2 suddenly bows out before the Eggman boss fight to give way to something quite interesting: A red bridge extending out from the island's coast. The bridge's architecture doesn't quite match that of Radical Highway, most notably using tall suspension wires hooked up to some off-screen upper portion of the construction, but I think the idea alone is fascinating enough: This is drastically more modern architecture compared to the rickety wooden bridges otherwise seen in Green Hill Zone. We're still a bit unsure of if Advance 1 takes place before or after Sonic Adventure 2, but if it's before - it may also be possible that the work on this bridge began on the South Island end of things *before* the mainland Radical Highway-end were finished with their work, with the idea of joining the two bridges somewhere in the middle.

Let's again also consider where this bridge takes our characters in Advance - to Secret Base Zone, a shockingly urban facility which we still don't really know the location of. Sonic and c.o need to zip-line into its entrance, with a background that only features light and buildings far off into the distance - is it possible that the Secret Base exists sort of like an oil rig in the middle of the ocean, inbetween South Island and the mainland, as some sort of production facility for the UN? Regardless, it serves as a pit-stop in the Advance campaign - after it, we can pretty cleanly chart a roadmap for where the cast travels. Casino Paradise's ocean background seemingly depicts it as being part of the coastline (bottom left of the SA2 map), Ice Mountain is pretty clearly meant to be another area of Ice Cap Zone given how it leads to the Angel Island Zone - which is, in reality, a dilapidated Sky Sanctuary. Effectively, the campaign seems to go from South Island, to the bridge connecting South Island to the mainland, to a coastside Vegas-like casino wonderland built by Eggman, which is near the Mystic Ruins and thus near Angel Island by extension (it may be connected to Night Carnival from Sonic Rush?). And all of it connected thanks to the works of a bridge, seemingly set up in Adventure 2 with Radical Highway being under construction, possibly with the goals to connect the two core parts of Sonic's world.

Whew! That's pretty much all the words I have, and I've now reached the max cap of images per posts. I truly don't know how many Sonic fans care about these granular details and concepts about the environment of Sonics world in games from 20+ years ago, but I hope it got some gears turning - and if there is some merit to this, it may further get you wondering as to why the path connecting the two was seemingly cut off in the end? Given the cityscapes we see in Forces and IDW, it's possible that this mutual relation between the two worlds lasted for a fair while - what could've possibly led to that bond being broken? Maybe Unleashed breaking the world apart had something to do with it...

My special interest strikes again, this time with my SDR2 scringlos : ) Thank you so much for everyone’s support for the Ace-A-Pony post! I really didn’t expect it to blow up as it did!! There will definately be more Danganronpa ponies coming in the future : ) Shoutout to @thiscatdraws, @etchif and @luckpuppet for inspiration!

Just like last time, we got some headcanons in the keep reading bit - do enjoy!! (Major spoilers for the series and SDR2!)

- Hajime is, and has always been a blank flank. He’s always been self conscious about it, and he’s tried to earn it without much luck. His blank flank is a key motivator in him signing up for the Hope Cultivation plan

- Nagito broke his horn in the devasting accident that killed his parents. I headcanon that a unicorn loosing their horn is one of the most painful things they can ever experience, and that they suffer from chronic pain for the rest of their lives. Miraculously, he can still perform some magic. This spell casting either goes off without a hitch, or can be very dangerous, depending on his luck

- Due to her status as an A.I, Chiaki’s ‘true form’ is an alicorn, similiar to that of Sunny Starscout from G5. Her horn and wings are made up of pixels, and can only be seen during the breakdown of the Neo World Program

- Many presume the Ultimate Imposter to be a changeling due to their exceptional disguises. However, they are simply an earth pony who has mastered the art of disguise and misdirection. They utilise some magic to help with the disguise, but much of it is down to special effects and makeup - which only makes their feats more impressive

- Kazuichi is deceptively strong for a pegasus, having strength akin to that of an earth pony. Although he is more than capable of flying, and even fine with heights, he is petrified of fast speeds. He suffers from bad motion sickness from flying, and prefers to spend his time on the ground tinkering with machines.

- Gundham claims to be the child of a demon and an angel, sighting his differing wings as proof. It is in fact a rare birth defect. Due to his different wings, he actually struggles to fly, and can only really hover for short periods. He comes from a family of bat ponies based in a cold mountainous region, hence his woolly fur. Although his tales are exaggerated (side note - this man is so autistic fkjdfhk), he is actually a decently skilled fighter and magic user.

- Akane is a skilled parkour athlete. She can barely fly, instead using her wings to glide in order to improve her elevation in her stunts. Her and Nekomaru are the best of friends : )

- Fuyuhiko is tiny for a pegasi his age, and has smaller than average wings. He cannot fly, and relies on Peko for protection and even transport.

- Peko was abandoned as a foal and left at the Kuzuryu headquarters. The family would use her bat pony heritage against her, keeping her in the family by claiming no one would want her because of it. From this, she learnt to ignore many of her bat pony instincts.

- Hiyoko is a skilled ‘breeze dancer’, but was often bullied by other breezies for her size. As a result, she isn’t afraid to figh back against those bigger than her, and is even known to bite

White Book - Part 8

“Shin Megami Tensei Devil Children: White Book”

Game Summary / English Translation (Gameboy Color, 2001)

Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 / Part 4 / Part 5 / Part 6 / Part 7 / Part 8

This is a (mostly-complete) translation of the story portions of the game as well as a summary of story-related text in chronological order. Names and dialogue have been edited for easier reading. Scene locations are labeled using square brackets. I will be using default names for characters who can be renamed.

Part 8 - Prayer Tower

[ Harajuku Tower ]

Masaki will overhear Takaharu arguing with Rei:

Takaharu: “Why are the Angels bringing a war to Makai, Rei? There’s good, kind Demons there—why are they ignoring that fact!?”

Rei: “I have no answer for this. Have even I begun to question their plan?”

Takaharu: “The Angels claim they are ensuring eternal bliss, but I cannot agree with their methods, and I’ll have no part in it!”

Rei: “Takaharu… let’s not overthink this! Surely, the Angel’s great plan will end in a paradise for all!”

Masaki approaches.

Takaharu: “Oh, hey Masaki! What’s up?”

Masaki: “Hi Takaharu! I’m heading back to Heaven.”

Takaharu: “To Heaven… wait—! Are you sure you want to go? Your Devil power will be sealed away as soon as you set foot in there!”

Masaki: “Then I’ll have to go without. I need to meet the Angels and make them explain themselves.”

Takaharu: “That’s my Masaki all right—though I doubt the Angels will be accommodating. Truth be told, I want to hear their explanation and I have a few questions I’d like answered myself!”

Takaharu: “Hey—don’t be careless when you’re running around up there. The Angels are probably just waiting to strike you down while you’re stripped of your power, Masaki!”

Masaki continues to the Circle Gate.

[ Heaven – Transparent Maze ]

Masaki exits the Gate and proceeds forward, where he encounters Uriel again.

Uriel: “Halt! You imbecile… You dare tarnish Heaven with your tainted footsteps, Devil Child?”

Masaki: “I go wherever I want and do as I please, without a thought for anyone else—you know… just like how you Angels do.”

Uriel: “Devils are powerless in Heaven. You still dare to advance?”

Uriel rushes forward.

Uriel: “I said halt! Fall before the soldiers of Heaven!”

Combat versus Virtue. When Masaki wins:

Uriel: “How can this be! Such recklessness… I was not prepared…”

Masaki can now proceed onward to the next Circle Gate.

[ Elysian Fields ]

As soon as Masaki arrives, Takaharu will call to transfer a DVDAS entry for Neo Pheonix.

Continuing through the fields, Masaki will encounter a fork in the path. To the north is Green Town, to the east is the way to Saint Classico, and continuing south through the forest will lead to the Tower of Prayer.

[ Green Town ]

Green town has a shop, hotel/bank, Mysterious Mansion, and Training Center. Masaki can talk with the Angels in town to learn the following:

This region of Heaven is called the Elysian Fields.

Above the Elysian Fields is the Crystal Ring, and above that is Cosmos City.

The Pontiff oversees the Elysian Fields.

The Pontiff can be found in the Tower of Prayer to the south.

The residents of Green Town are secluded and live a peaceful life.

The Pontiff is not taking visitors at the Tower right now, so Masaki heads on to Saint Classico.

[ Saint Classico ]

Saint Classico is a larger settlement with a shop, hotel/bank, Mysterious Mansion, Training Center, VinE Center, and a casino. The door to the east of the VinE Center is an Art Gallery.

Masaki can learn the following from the Angels in the city:

This city is named Saint Classico.

The Angels hold rules and order in great reverence and will uphold their laws for eternity.

The Angels are shocked at the rumor of a child holding the power of Devils appearing in Heaven.

Nearby is a shrine that holds a sacred treasure.

If anyone should try to steal the sacred treasure, the Pontiff will intervene.

The Pontiff’s permission is required to cross the bridge east of Saint Classico.

Masaki enters the Art Gallery:

Greeter Angel: “Welcome to the Saint Classico Gallery! Please view the paintings at your leisure.”

Masaki can examine the framed paintings. Starting from the paining closest to the south entrance:

Lord Raguel, Governor of Heaven. Self-portrait painted in Cosmos City.

A painting depicting the battle between Hoshigami, the Star God, and Jashin, the Wicked God: “Before the beginning of all, these divine powers battled against one another. The Star God stood for creation and life, while the Wicked God stood for destruction and chaos. The Wicked God was relentless and vicious in his attack, nearly destroying the Star God. She felt herself fading… as the Wicked God moved to strike the fatal blow… the Star God summoned the last of her strength to shield herself. The Wicked God’s attack was reflected, and he was defeated by his own power. The Star God had won. But, she was merciful and instead of ending her foe’s life, she sealed away his power. The Wicked God was no longer a threat, and so the Star God commenced the creation of our world. She bestowed upon our world three divine powers; Angelic, Demonic, and Humanity.”

Artist Angel: “Did you hear the legend about the shrine by the lake? There’s a special treasure hidden inside!”

Artist Angel: “Oh, I’m an aspiring artist. May I paint your portrait?”

Masaki can decline or accept. When Masaki accepts the offer:

Masaki: “Make me look good!”

Artist Angel: “Alright! Hold still for a minute. Mmm-hmm, good pose…… and my rough sketch is done. Come back to see my painting when it’s finished!”

Masaki heads through the North Gate of Saint Classico and enters the shrine.

[ Lakebottom Shrine ]

Proceed through the underwater maze and find the switch. Masaki presses the switch and hears a noise. Masaki encounters Lindwurm in the water.

Lindwurm: “Who goes there? Were you unaware that I—Lord Lindwurm—guard this water shrine? Hmm… this trespasser is only a child! Regardless, none are permitted to enter these waters, and the rule will be enforced!”

Masaki: “Okay, so, my bad on the trespassing—but this is the only way I can think of to get the Pontiff’s attention!”

Lindwurm: “I care not for your baffling excuses! I will see that you enter an eternal sleep, drowned in these dark waters!”

Masaki battles Lindwurm. When Masaki wins:

Lindwurm: “This power… what kind of power is this…?”

Masaki exits the water to talk to the Pontiff, who has suddenly appeared.

Pontiff: “Ah, it’s Masaki! …Lindwurm was said to protect these waters until the world ended. Have you gained some prophesized power from his defeat?”

Masaki: “I’ve been told by everyone that my power is the Devil’s power. But, I still don’t know who gave it to me.”

Pontiff: “The power of Devils is sealed away in Heaven—yours is something other than that. What… do you want from coming here?”

Masaki: “I want answers… what do the Angels want? Why are they invading Makai and attacking demons? And why are they manipulating humans on Earth?”

Pontiff: “An invasion of Makai…?? Can it be true? And this boy is… You—you were born the same day as Takaharu, correct?”

Masaki: “You know Takaharu? Yeah! We were born at the same hospital on the same day!”

Pontiff: “Yes, that’s right! Just as Takaharu said. So, you really are that child…”

Masaki: “Yeah. Where’s Takaharu, anyway? Is he here in Heaven?”

Pontiff: “Yes, Raguel has taken guidance of him.”

Masaki: “Raguel…? Where can I find them?”

Pontiff: “In the highest level of Heaven—Cosmos City. They are engaged in their duties of governing the divine realm.”

Masaki: “Fantastic. How do I get there?”

Pontiff: “You must ascend to Cosmos City from the Crystal Ring… However, one bearing the Devil’s power will be forbidden from entering. The Heavenly Army has already stationed its strongest warriors to bar your path.”

Masaki: “Don’t care. Already made up my mind. Gonna go find my bro.”

Pontiff: “………There’s no reasoning with this kid.”

Pontiff: “Very well! I grant you passage! To reach the Crystal Ring, proceed beyond the bridge to the east.”

Pontiff: “I hope that you discover the source of your mysterious power!”

Masaki: “Wadda’ya……?”

Clay: “Onwards, Master! We’ll give the Heavenly Army a demonstration of Devil Child’s power!”

Masaki opens the treasure chest left by the Lindwurm to obtain a Double Chamber for the King Raiser gun.

[ Saint Classico ]

Head to the south gate of the city. Paku and Harmil are nearby. If Masaki talks to them:

Harmil: “Heya, Misaki! I’m really bust right now, sorry!”

Paku: “Wha! I didn’t do anything!”

Walk toward the south exit to trigger a cutscene.

Harmil: “So, uh, Paku? …you were at the hospital that night, weren’t you?”

Paku: “Um? Uhhh? I have no idea what you’re talking about!”

Harmil: “Still denying and playing dumb? Come on, you’re breaking out in a cold sweat! I’m not fooled by your acting!”

Paku: “I did nothing! Nothing! ……”

Harmil: “Then why are you avoiding my questions?”

Masaki: “Hey guys! What’s going on?”

Paku: “Eeeep! I must be going!”

Harmil: “Hey!! You’re not escaping me!”

Paku and Harmil exit.

Clay: “…how strange? Paku behaves so frightened in your presence, Master.”

Clay: “What next, Master? I believe it would be wise to meet with the Pontiff once more, before proceeding to the Crystal Ring.”

Masaki heads to the Tower of Prayer.

[ Tower of Prayer ]

Masaki is now permitted entrance to the Tower. Ascend to the highest floor and speak to the Pontiff.

Pontiff: “There is a passage in the Book of Raziel which I never understood, until my meeting with you. I pass it on to you, now.”

Masaki obtains Book of Raziel #4.

Book of Raziel #4: “At the end of his odyssey, a new path will open to the world. In deepest shadows, it stirs awake and clashes with the trinity.

Masaki can talk with the Pontiff again:

Pontiff: “Continue on, Masaki! I return to my prayers.”

[ Elysian Fields ]

Masaki passes over the eastern bridge and accesses the Tenkai Gate.

I really appreciate all of the links and information in that post you reblogged about the Israeli prison/detainment policies/abuses (not sure the best wording for all of that horror tbh)… but the OP post of that talking about the condition of hostages vs prisoners released doesn’t make sense to me at all. Are they saying the hostages released are supposed to be some kind of reflection of being treated well during captivity? cause I’ve read about a hostage who was shot multiple times and needed surgery, another on the brink of death because of lack of medication, a 12 year old boy who said he was beat by residents, another child being forced to watch footage, etc. I don’t understand why we can’t acknowledge the absolute horrors Israel is committing while also not trying to turn Hamas into angelic freedom fighters with the purest of morals. Things like this make it really hard for me to reblog or share stuff on social media cause I can agree with 95% of the information but then I’ll realize “oh that link hidden in this post actually goes to an alt right neo nazi website” or “oh snuck in the middle of this really great article is the most glaring of antisemitic rhetoric”… anyway, I’m sorry for the rant here I’m just… exhausted. By the world and also sometimes by my fellow pro Palestinian advocates.

I am also exhausted by it sometimes, and not immune to getting swept up in the emotions of all of this as much as I'm trying to stay reasonable. I agree the way OP worded the original post was not ideal, if it had been just that without the longer and well-sourced reply I don't think I would have reblogged it. Because you're right, criticism of Israel can't devolve into acting like Hamas by default is an amazing upstanding moral organization. That's kindergarten nonsense, this need to have a well defined Good Guy and Bad Guy in every situation. Adults should be capable of more nuance than that, and it's really frustrating to see that so many aren't.

I think for me - because I don't know the intentions of that other person and can't speak for them - posts like that are not about saying 'wow look how wonderful Hamas is'. They are about the more zoomed-out task of challenging the Western/Imperial narrative that Israel isn't doing anything wrong. The 'right to defend itself' narrative, that is just blatant nonsense under international law. The narrative that when Hamas does something it's terrorism but when the state of Israel does the same thing (or, usually, a far worse version of the same thing), it's not. The narrative that Israel is the moral authority who is following international law to the best of their ability, is trying to minimize civilian casualties, is only going after Hamas, has no choice but to bomb hospitals because there is no other way to protect their own citizens. It's not for me about saying that just because Israel is bad, Hamas is automatically good. It's about acknowledging that for literal decades, the broadcasters of the Western narrative (governments in America/Canada/UK, corporate owned media companies like CNN and MSNBC, etc) have been just blatantly lying, propagandizing, and selectively presenting partial or twisted information, all in service of empire and money and colonization and the enrichment of defense contractors. Joe Biden said, years ago, (paraphrasing because I can't remember the exact quote) "If Israel didn't exist, America would have to invent an Israel to protect it's interests in the region."

I don't know if that makes sense, I hope it does. For me it's about .. yes, push back against people who are trying to make this a binary situation in which Israel is Bad therefore Hamas is Good. But also seeing more value in a more zoomed out perspective that is meant to challenge extremely pervasive and genocidal Western narratives that have gone largely unchallenged for the entire history of the region. Sometimes you do get there by drawing equivalencies. By asking "wait a second, why does Israel have thousands of Palestinian hostages in the first place and why does no one in power seem to think that's a problem?"

Double feature: Wings of Desire (1987) + Miracle in Milan (1951)

Since I've started reading Borges' Aleph I'm more curious about magical realism stories. Those two movies kind of walked very near the subgenre.

Wings of Desire is all about angels envying the human nature and ultimately falling from grace.

It's a late 80 black and white flick that used color on a very inteligent and emotional way. I loved that there's some subtle messages hidden in details along the movie, like children being the only ones that look to the sky and therefore the only ones able to actually see the angels. All the adults can't see them cause are too busy looking to their own problems. The contemplation of Sublime as a path to notice God (even if only a mere glimpse of Him).

Another pretty interesting thing was the presence of a Nick Cave's show in the middle of the movie on a very Berlin Goth nightclub. It had no other purpose other than adding texture to the character's dramas and doubts. Beside being very cool, of course. I feel like this generation of weirdo cinema directors (Lynch is another one!) had a very healthy relationship with parallel forms of art. They used their movies as a platform to bring attention not only to interesting themes, but also interesting artists.

Miracle in Milan was simply beautiful.

This drama comedy spoke to me on a very deep level specially because of it's main message:

We follow the story of Toto, an naive orphan boy who sees the world through goodness lens only. He ends up ona poor region where he helps homeless people building a slum. The problem starts when they find oil and a rich man decide to buy the land for himself.

This movie* is certainly closer to Magical Realism as it is part of the Italian movement of Neo-Realism:

there's a magical dove that make wishes come true;

and many, many, other fantastical apparitions

The resilience of the poor in front of a rich man trying to kick them out of their slum, their only home, is touching. I won't give you any spoilers but when the movie ended I couldn't help but saying out loud "Glory be to God!".

Conclusion

This double feature was a really good one because it balanced the existencial drama of "Wings of Desire" with the social commentary comedy of "Miracle in Milan". I recommend watching them in that order so you can start the experience crying and end it laughing.

*Curiously this was not the first Vittorio de Sica movie I've watched in life. Decades ago I saw "Bicycle Thieves" (1948) but I think I was too young to really understand the director back then. Time for a re-watch.

Late Post 3/18/24: Evangelion

This week's viewing is most definitely the most iconic work out of everything that we've examined so far, especially for someone who enjoys the mecha genre of anime as much as I do. Through the Galbraith article I gained a greater amount of context for Eva's start, specifically its ties to the "otaku" culture and its burgeoning acceptance in the 1990s. That alongside with the initial struggling for Gainax to see success with the work further informs the depression that the creator of Evangelion, Hideaki Anno, was suffering from that is so thoroughly entrenched in the work. I greatly enjoyed how this show has such a unique visual style and tone in comparison to other mechas, with it being so much more eerie and and off-putting than others, with that even being seen with the environment. At first glance, this "future" version of Tokyo looks standard, but is instead mostly flooded and destroyed with future cities being the floating "neo-Tokyo" regions that we similarly saw in works like Akira. I imagine this represented the societal flip that was going on in the late 90s in Japan, with rising levels of youth anxiety, cultural upheaval, and the economic struggles that were plaguing the country during the era. This generational divide is even showcased with Shinji and his father Gendo, with their almost chasm-like relationship representing the division between the employed older generations and the fledgling younger generations that struggled to gain any financial stability, just as Shinji is unable to gain any ground in his relationship with his father and the internal conflict that rages within him. Overall, I think these episodes provide a good introduction to the world and the episodic nature of them fighting the Angels, an aspect of which is a trope in mecahs but the style in which Eva handles it makes it entertaining.

This screenshot also summarizes basically the entire show, Shinji looks disheveled and small in the face of the natural anger exuded by EVA Unit 01 with his father looming in the distance, almost like the light at the end of the tunnel that Shinji is reaching for by piloting the EVA in the first place.

I also just love the trippy visuals that the show has with the angels, honestly the combat sections might be my favorite part about this show.
