Alrighty fellow insane sonic fans i have something very cool for you today: a WORLDBUILDING theory!! this is something that's been kicking around in my head for so long that i forget it isn't something I've shared with many others yet lol
Tumblr media
[ This post primarily covers stuff from Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Advance, and ignores Sonic Chronicles and Sonic Pocket Adventure as they have been struck from canon (see: Encyclo-speed-ia) ]
[ It should also be noted that this theory is built on the idea that "the world" as depicted in Sonic Forces is not accurately depicting the entire globe, but rather depicting Eggman's takeover of just the island archipelago where the animal cast lives (South Island, West Side Island, Mirage Island, Northstar Islands, Angel Island) as to explain its geography and lack of human characters ]
Right! So, a big theme in the environmental design of the original Sonic Adventure was having the Sonic cast sort of "cross over" into the human world more - the wording on this was initially nebulous, but with updated translations and clearer official word recently, we now know that it means that the "human world" is moreso like a mainland populated by humans that exists separately from the animal-inhabited island archipelago of Sonic 1, 2, CD, 3&K and Superstars (see: Sonic Origins). My immediate first point of comparison - of all things - is something like the first Madagascar movie, where the lemurs are able to be a fully functioning society in a region completely isolated from humans.
Tumblr media
Except it's not quite like that movie, is it? We see in Sonic Adventure (and further in Unleashed, 06) that animal characters like Sonic and c.o are able to exist just fine within the human world, to where Amy has flat-out moved into Station Square. Big and Tails, too, have settled down by the Mystic Ruins close to where Angel Island (sometimes) crashes down by, Rouge owns a club in Sonic Battle - you get the gist. Animal characters, the majority population of the islands as we see in Forces and the IDW series, are able to migrate into the "mainland" human societies, but it appears to still be a rarity, likely not even something everyone has the opportunity to do (Big might've been born on Angel Island, Tails and/or Sonic can fly any of Sonic's friends to wherever they want to go, etc.). The most contact humans have with the animal world is through the Mystic Ruins site, or Eggman using his excessive wealth to fly in and try and effectively colonize the islands as we see in Sonic 1, 2, Superstars, CD, 4.1 and 4.2 (for note: CD, 4.1 and 4.2 take place on the same island of Mirage Island)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sonic Adventure 2's level select is obviously to be taken with a grain of salt as a stylized take on a world map, but it seems to infer the same thing that Origins' main menu and Angel Island's close proximity to the Mystic Ruins both corroborate - the island archipelago inhabited by the animal characters seems to be quite close to the mainland "United Nations" landmass, most evidently close to Rouge's Route 280 level. And given how often Eggman lays his sights on the islands as a primary target for his schemes (Heroes may well also be taking place on the islands, as Seaside Hill is confirmed to be near/on South Island), it would make sense from the United Nations' POV to try and make access to the islands more accessible. For example, to enable easier import and export of goods, help citizens evacuate from possible disaster (eg. how the Metal Virus in IDW described how it was impossible to evacuate to anywhere else but Angel Island), and so on - a way to connect the two societies more smoothly only makes sense.
With ALL that context and preamble out of the way, this is my theory, and where Sonic Advance finally comes into the picture:
Radical Highway in Sonic Adventure 2, and later Neo Green Hill Zone from Sonic Advance, were together depicting a brief attempt to connect South Island to the United Nations mainland.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You may think this is a bit of a nutty conclusion to draw given how little of a story Sonic Advance actually has, but I think there's a lot we can glean from just the environmental design of Neo Green Hill Zone alone. Compared to the original Green Hill Zone, and most of the levels in the Classic Sonic games that aren't just flat-out urban cities/facilities seemingly built under Eggman's control (Star Light, Spring Yard, Chemical Plant), Neo Green Hill Zone's touches of human infrastructure are far more...friendly, for a lack of a better word. There's parasols and wooden scaffolding, a grind rail or two along paved sidewalks, yet the natural beauty of the area is left entirely in tact. Nothing about it appears like Eggman's work, yet it is quite evidently structured for human interests, for tourism and walking/biking rather than all the funky ways in which Sonic's animal cast are comfortable moving around. Then there's of course the name: NEO Green Hill Zone, as if it's reinvigorating the idea for a fresh new facelift, re-marketing it!
But how does all that connect to Radical Highway?
Tumblr media
Radical Highway (and Mission Street by extension) have a quirk unique to them when compared to almost all other urban city levels in the series - as you can see in the image above, they're themed around still being under construction. Compared to a level like Lethal Highway from Shadow the Hedgehog (or the aforementioned Route 280 from SA2) the holes and gaps in Radical Highway are presented as being specifically because the winding roads are still under construction. You can see this on the level map above too - Route 280 and Route 101 appear to be part of a long, linear, already-finished stretch of road, wheras the area of Radical Highway and Mission Street is filled with gaps, inlets and breaks in the road. Route 101/Route 280 already appear to fill the function of letting people cross between the two city areas depicted on Adventure 2's world map...so then, what exactly is the construction and general wobblyness of Radical Highway for?
Well, let's look at Sonic Advance again: Specifically, the end of the Neo Green Hill Zone stage, and the way the game progresses immediately thereafter:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The natural beach environment of Neo Green Hill Zone Act 2 suddenly bows out before the Eggman boss fight to give way to something quite interesting: A red bridge extending out from the island's coast. The bridge's architecture doesn't quite match that of Radical Highway, most notably using tall suspension wires hooked up to some off-screen upper portion of the construction, but I think the idea alone is fascinating enough: This is drastically more modern architecture compared to the rickety wooden bridges otherwise seen in Green Hill Zone. We're still a bit unsure of if Advance 1 takes place before or after Sonic Adventure 2, but if it's before - it may also be possible that the work on this bridge began on the South Island end of things *before* the mainland Radical Highway-end were finished with their work, with the idea of joining the two bridges somewhere in the middle.
Tumblr media
Let's again also consider where this bridge takes our characters in Advance - to Secret Base Zone, a shockingly urban facility which we still don't really know the location of. Sonic and c.o need to zip-line into its entrance, with a background that only features light and buildings far off into the distance - is it possible that the Secret Base exists sort of like an oil rig in the middle of the ocean, inbetween South Island and the mainland, as some sort of production facility for the UN? Regardless, it serves as a pit-stop in the Advance campaign - after it, we can pretty cleanly chart a roadmap for where the cast travels. Casino Paradise's ocean background seemingly depicts it as being part of the coastline (bottom left of the SA2 map), Ice Mountain is pretty clearly meant to be another area of Ice Cap Zone given how it leads to the Angel Island Zone - which is, in reality, a dilapidated Sky Sanctuary. Effectively, the campaign seems to go from South Island, to the bridge connecting South Island to the mainland, to a coastside Vegas-like casino wonderland built by Eggman, which is near the Mystic Ruins and thus near Angel Island by extension (it may be connected to Night Carnival from Sonic Rush?). And all of it connected thanks to the works of a bridge, seemingly set up in Adventure 2 with Radical Highway being under construction, possibly with the goals to connect the two core parts of Sonic's world.
Whew! That's pretty much all the words I have, and I've now reached the max cap of images per posts. I truly don't know how many Sonic fans care about these granular details and concepts about the environment of Sonics world in games from 20+ years ago, but I hope it got some gears turning - and if there is some merit to this, it may further get you wondering as to why the path connecting the two was seemingly cut off in the end? Given the cityscapes we see in Forces and IDW, it's possible that this mutual relation between the two worlds lasted for a fair while - what could've possibly led to that bond being broken? Maybe Unleashed breaking the world apart had something to do with it...
Thanks for reading this far if you did - and feel free to add your own ideas or things I might've missed in all of this!

Sonic headcanons 10
Shadow the hedgehog likes to watch various documentaries to help him learn more about the world Maria wanted him to protect. He likes a vast variety, but nature documentaries are his favourite. He enjoys seeing the highs and lows of life and what it has to offer. (They're also the reason he knows how babies are made)
(Adopted headcanon from @fernsnailz on Tumblr)- E 123 Omega isn't powered by a little animal like a Flicky, but is powered by a Chaos drive. (seen in Sonic adventure 2) This is because he's meant for longevity and endurance, which isn't really possible if his power source can die easily.
Omega is mostly made of Tungsten alloys and titanium. This makes Omega very sturdy, strong and heat resistant. He also doesn't rust.
Despite Shadow claiming he doesn't have any friends; he actually spends a significant amount of time bonding with Rouge and Omega doing fun activities. This ranges from run of the mill board games, video games, bowling, paint balling (Which all of team Dark are excellent at) and other more extreme hobbies.
Omega secretly volunteers at animal shelters. This probably started as unpaid community service because of public damages he caused, but he ended up really enjoyed caring for the animals. Many of them were abandoned and neglected like Eggman did to him and some were used as an energy source by Eggman in the past. He's very protective of them and no one would ever dare harm an animal if he was to find out about it.
Omega has a pet Romba, which he has taped a knife on it. It infuriates Shadow, Rouge and everyone else at GUN HQ, especially when it stabs their ankles. They don’t know where he got the idea from.
Amy Rose doesn't just use her Tarot cards to predict her own future and impending disasters, she also uses them to predict her friend's futures too. Especially their love lives. Sometimes, she tries to subtly be their wing woman and drop hints if they're near their supposed destined lover. They tend to think it’s just her rambunctious nature and passion for romance, rather than a prediction.

In the soft morning light, as the sun began to cast its golden hues across the landscape, Sonic watched from the outskirts of the woods as Chris made his way toward Eggman's newly constructed ship. His keen ears picked up snippets of the conversation between Chris and the doctor, though the scientific jargon meant little to him. What he did understand, however, was that this was a one-time opportunity for Chris to return to his own world.
As Chris boarded the ship, Sonic's heart felt heavy. He knew he should have raced forward, bid his friend a proper farewell, and maybe even shared a grin or a thumbs-up to reassure him. But deep down, Sonic understood the gravity of the situation. If he were to approach, to let his emotions run free, it might make Chris hesitate, and that wasn't something Sonic could bear.
So, with remarkable restraint, Sonic made a silent promise to himself to show his goodbye in his own unique way. As the ship's engines roared to life and it began to ascend into the sky, Sonic sprang into action. His cobalt form raced alongside the ship, his eyes locking with Chris's through the small window.
At that moment, time seemed to slow down. Sonic's emerald eyes held warmth and reassurance, his trademark grin touching his lips. "I'll be seein' ya, Chris!" he called out, his voice carrying through the thin barrier of the ship's hull, reaching Chris's ears.
Their gazes remained locked, filled with a multitude of unspoken words. Sonic's farewell was not just a simple goodbye; it was a promise of future reunions, of adventures to come, and the unbreakable bond between them. In those fleeting seconds, the message was conveyed, understood, and treasured.
A wistful smile graced Chris's lips, a delicate veil of melancholy shrouding his eyes. It dawned upon him that this ephemeral moment marked the likely conclusion of his encounters with Sonic, his best friend. Yet, an unusual serenity draped over him, veiling the sorrow that lurked within. The yearning to linger in Sonic's animated company had dissipated, replaced by the solace found in the kaleidoscope of splendid memories they had woven together.
As his vessel ascended, piercing the ethereal realm of clouds, Sonic diminished into a mere azure speck amid the sprawling expanse of nature. The cosmic canvas held their final tableau. It was at this poignant juncture, where the sky embraced the earth, that Chris chose to articulate his silent farewell.
"See you, Sonic."
As the ship continued its ascent, taking Chris away from the world he had come to know, Sonic slowed to a halt, watching it disappear into the sky. The sun had fully risen now, casting a warm glow over the landscape, and Sonic couldn't help but feel a mixture of emotions. Sadness at the departure of a friend, but also a sense of hope, hoping that their paths would cross again someday.
With a final nod of farewell, Sonic turned away from the receding ship and sprinted off, ready to embrace whatever challenges and adventures the future held. After all, for him, life was a never-ending race, and he was always up for the challenge.
Sonic's vibrant red sneakers skidded to a halt, their rubber soles making a subtle squeak against the ground. He gazed towards the endless path ahead with a bittersweet smile, a gust of wind ruffling his quills like a whispered farewell. Chris was gone, and the world felt a tad emptier without his presence. Sonic's eyes held a hint of nostalgia as he recalled the adventures they'd shared and the bond they'd forged between two worlds. It was an adventure that would forever hold a special place in his heart.
With a final nod to the sky, Sonic swiveled on his heel, each movement an embodiment of the boundless energy he was known for. He sped forward, the terrain a blur beneath his feet, until he came to a halt in front of Eggman, Decoe, Bocoe, and Bokkun.
Upon seeing the blur blur, Decoe, Bocoe, and Bokkun scrambled in an almost synchronized frenzy. Their mechanical movements were an amusing display of chaos, gears and servos whirring in a cacophony of comical desperation.
Decoe pointed a trembling metal finger toward Bocoe. His voice modulated in high-pitched panic as he chirped, "Don't be mad at us for sending Chris home! It's not my fault! Bocoe was the one who pushed the button!"
Bocoe instantly retorted with a staccato burst of mechanical chatter. "No way, it was Bokkun! He's always pressing buttons when he shouldn't!"
Bokkun tried to mount a defense, his voice a flurry of indignant beeps and buzzes. "Not true, guys! It was Decoe! He's the one who has the button-pressing habit!"
Unperturbed, Sonic placed a gloved hand on his hip, his ever-present grin unfading. He turned to Eggman, whose mustache twitched with annoyance. "Well, Egghead," Sonic began, his voice carrying a playful edge. "Never knew you had sentimental feelings."
Eggman huffed indignantly, trying to mask his true emotions beneath layers of bluster. "Sentimental feelings? Sonic, I'll have you know that I consider such emotions to be one of the most repulsive things in existence!"
Sonic's grin widened, and he stretched his tan arms lazily above his head. "Oh really? Aside from your mustache, what else ranks on your 'most repulsive' list?"
Eggman's mustache quivered with indignant outrage as he let out a gasp of offense. He tightened his grip on his jaw, grinding his teeth audibly before jabbing a gloved finger toward Sonic.
"Now let's get one thing straight, Sonic!" Eggman declared with a fiery glint in his tinted glasses. "Our alliance with the Meterax was a matter of a mutual enemy! Now that they're gone, it's back to business! My dream of an Eggman Empire will come true!"
Sonic's trademark grin widened, a picture of nonchalance amidst Eggman's fervor. "Wouldn't have it any other way, Eggman!"

Clearing Up Sonic Info: SHIRO MAEKAWA
As we know, Shiro Maekawa was a Writer, Game Designer, and Storyboarder for Sonic Games in the 2000's. However, many seem to no know just WHAT he wrote. So I shall provide a list.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, I have some notes to provide about the situations for 3 of these games (half.)
In Sonic 06, he was only a script writer. Dialouge only. Story was done by Kiyoko Yoshimura. Who wrote for Sonic X and would later go on to be the writer for Unleashed (Sonic World Adventure)
In Secret Rings, Maekawa was scenario Writer BUT the story editor and director "Yojiro Ogawa" rewrote 50% Of it. Thus, Ogawa is also the writer for secret rings. Not just Maekawa
In Riders Zero Gravity, He was only the story plotter (basically an organizer before the main scenario Writer starts writing) with the Main Scenario Writer being Masahiko Shiraishi (also from Sonic X). With help from "Hiroshi Miyamoto", The Writer from the original Sonic Riders, as Story Plotter with Mr. Maekawa. Triple Threat
There's rumors that he was also plotter on the Original Writers (with Miyamoto as Scenario Writer) including Windii saying he DM'd someone saying it but it hasn't been proven. Only the Scenario Writer (Miyamoto) was credited in the credits but Maekawa also went uncredited in the Storybook Games, but those Excluded all writers. Riders still credits a scenario writer. So it's UNCONFIRMED
Despite what many say, Shiro Maekawa didn't write for Sonic X. He was just a supervisor and occasionally gave ideas. Mainly during The Materex Saga (Season 3).

Me again! I think it goes without saying Sonic Frontiers had some great writing and fixed a lot of characters. Assuming the writing stays the same, who do you think should be the next character to have their personality fixed? I think Shadow!
Hello again anon! Oho! I absolutely agree with you there - I think Shadow needs some depth the most out of the cast right now. Silver is mostly fine - he just needs things to do, Rouge is pretty consistent - but each game will use a slider to determine how selfish or not selfish she is, and Blaze... yeah she's fine, just give her some damn screentime.
Shadow is the glaring, gaping hole that needs to be addressed. So in a world where I somehow snuck into SEGA headquarters and wrote Shadow's character for the next game - I wanted to say how I'd approach his character:
The less appealing way, to me, is to make him act back how he was in the 06 era. I LOVE 06 Shadow, he's my favourite Shadow - but that version of him is a far cry from the personality we've seen from him in the past decade. I wouldn't complain if this happened but I think there's a smarter way to go about this.
In much the same way as Tails was dealt with - I would achknowledge Shadow's portrayals in the latest games and comics - all his assholery, all of his fat ego in the way, and just not giving a damn about the people around him because SEGA decided he's not allowed to have friends now.
So take this asshole, and what do you do with him?
You humble him.
You get him a villain that just absolutely wrecks shop and kicks his shit in so hard that he's forced to rethink his life decisions. Let Shadow be confident entering in - like it's a rehash of Shadow vs. Infinite - but unlike with Infinite, this antagonist trumps him in every single way. This man's ego needs to be stripped the fuck down for any change in his character to happen.
He gets his ass beaten so hard that Sonic, Rouge, Omega or WHOEVER has to come save him, and they have to retreat
Cowards run, I win - Okay bitch, let me put you in a situation you're forced to run from. Is your outlook the same?
The game ensues with Shadow basically being hellbent on destroying this antagonist and trying to fall back into his old habits - but as the story goes on it becomes increasingly clearer that he needs the help of his allies.
Bonus points - I'd want a scene where Shadow's behaviour is actually called out by any of the prior characters, or hell - you want a callback? Let Amy do it - but I want a character to say to his face just how much of a nuisance he's been.
He learns to realise throughout the plot that those around him are not a burden - and are in fact very useful, he learns more about each of his peers - and sees that they all want to give him their friendship and that hey - kindness is kind of nice, actually. Maybe Shadow can admit to why he's been acting the way he has to Rouge and Omega - and finally recieve some damn consoling
I think of a fear of getting close to people is a viable explanation considering a certain blonde 12 year old. Shadow's moved on from tying himself to Maria's last dying wish - but it's undeniable that she and her death has impacted his psyche in many more ways. I hate to beat a dead horse but just as with Tails' recent cowardice in Forces - I did want to explain his turn in character.
In the end - he's able to defeat the villain with the help of his friends. He doesn't end the story with a completely different personality - not at all. On the other end, he's still got a large ego and he's our usual broody blunt man - but he's come out of the story with the realization that it's okay to be vulnerable and lean on others when he needs it. His strongest bonds are still with Rouge and Omega - and he makes the move to properly repair his relationship with them - officially forming Team Dark that will move forward together from now on.
Shadow isn't attached by the hip to them, per say - he has his independence streak, but now - he does actually have at least 2 friends that he works with frequently. But I hope his bond with the others would get to be strengthened as well. His relationship with Sonic is still complicated, but a little less hostile on Shadow's end now.
So yeah, SEGA decided Team Dark aren't a team anymore - so fuck it, I'll just make them a team a second time because I care too much.
Sorry I went on a tangeant because of your ask, anon! But this was really fun to explore. Thank you so much for the question :)

New future AU idea - Currently Unnamed
Posted this in Twitter so I'm posting it here too
Ok so, I've been thinking up an AU that I like a LOT rn The AU would take place 12 years after canon events, and after Sonic and Eggman's deaths well not exactly sonic's death per say. Basically, After a 10-year-long war with eggman, they'd have their finala and hardest battle yet.
As a last ditch effort, Sonic would give up his mortality and become a god of the wind and of freedom, but in the same way that chaos is a god. He wouldn't be able to return to the normal world until 200 years in the future when the Silver of that time would find him (he wouldn't know or remember him, since the Silver of Sonic's time would be from a different, now deleted, timeline, aka "Sonic-time" Silver's a time anomaly)
But returning to the present, my guess is the AU would be set 2 years after the final fight, making everyone adults ig. Sonic's death would greatly affect everyone involved. Shadow would prolly leave GUN, since he'd be tired of fighting after 2 of the people he cared most about would be dead, plus since eggman's dead there wouldn't be any real threat left. He'd maybe open a cat orphanage, since he mentioned that in the twitter takeovers <:)) (also inspired by @selynnkino)
As for Rouge, she'd also leave gun and would maybe just retire, tho she'd still collect gems and such, although she'd mostly have another gem she'd care most about if you know what I mean- Sonic and Rouge grew really close overtime and became really good friends so losing him would affect her bad too
Tho, and this is no surprise, but it would affect Tails the most. By that time, he'd be 18 sure, but he'd prolly have the drive to continue his brother's legacy. He'd maybe become a freelance hero of sorts, but would still put his own spin into it since he'd know sonic wouldn't want him to only forge his future based on sonic himself. Tho it'd still be very hard for tails to deal with losing his only family. Tho by that point, maybe that seed Cosmo left him would start flourishing and would become a toddler who would drive tails to continue on, as it would be like his son/daughter <3
Knuckles,, would prolly isolate himself more. Sonic was the only real reason he got out of Angel Island, so losing him would be a major blow. I think most of us highly underestimate just how much knux cared for Sonic, the dude's the only reason knuckles actually started making friends and seeing the world. I'm still not sure what I'd want to do with knux' character here but so far this is what I have for him.
As for Amyy, I love her smm Hmm, I'd want her to start her own bakery, but would still sometimes assist Tails on keeping Sonic's legacy. Tho I'm pretty sure at that point she'd be extremely tired of working in the field. We already see how deeply her work for the resistance affected her so she'd prolly just really want a break from all of that. Other than that, she'd prolly also drag knux out of his own bubble called angel island and make him hang out with her sometimes because damn!! the guy kinda needs it tbh. It'd also highlight how, regardless of how bad she feels, she still goes out of her way to help others too, idk I feel it's very important to her character.
Now Metal, not having neither a master, nor a purpose anymore. Metal'd prolly be VERY lost. They'd have to forge their own path, become their own person. It could involve Tails and Amy too. I haven't thought much about it but Metal'd have to rediscover themselves basically!
I don't have much to say about others now, tho.
Also, needless to say everyone here would have PTSD btw. Like considering the amount of trauma each of them had to deal with,, yeah. It's obvious all of them would have a lot of underlying issues who would stay with them their whole lives.
Btw!!! If you've read this far then thank you for hearing my rambling!! If you have any idea what I could name this AU please comment or send me a message/ask!! <3

A small...Sorta fanfic? Based on some of the Twitter Takeover answers from Shadow that really stuck out to me, so I decided to make ANOTHER AU for the Paradox AU PrismSpaces (the Paradox AU is just my excuse to make many Sonic AUs and somehow connect them via the Paradox Prism headcanon of mine lmao) No real angst, no shipping, just mostly written ambiance and practicing writing Shadow on his own! . . . . .
-The Thrift Shop- . . . . .
It was located in one of the downtown outskirts of Station Square, a small thrift store whose doors almost never seem to open, and the many knick-knacks inside never seem to be touched. Atop the front of the homely shop was a sign with old lettering that read "Marianna's Thrift Store", with small decorations scattered about the sides and on some of the windows. The last two "n"s and "a" were all painted over with black paint, making the leftover name "Maria" now have a large, splotchy black space between it and the "'s". The owner had wanted to cover up that last bit, hoping that the smaller amount of syllables would maybe make the name catch more attention... However, it's a tad bit hard for that to work with a messy dark blotch on the sign now.
Yet... Somehow... That simple change DID matter, to one individual at least...
The owner sat in her chair at the cash register, scrolling through videos on her phone with one hand while she pet the soft, pale fur of her beloved kitty, Mello. His fur was both orange and white, with tabby stripes on the orange parts, and his bright yellow eyes, what got him his name, peered around the shop at seemingly nothing. As cats tend to do.
She was wearing an old band tee under a jean jacket, a bunch of pins clipped onto the front of it with some random paint splatters on it here and there from years in high school art class, now way in the past, and yet the jacket still somehow fit her. She brushed her light brown hair from her face every now and then, and Mello batted at one of her pale blonde highlights as if it were a string, which caused the woman to laugh and playfully swat back at him.
She'd been struggling a bit, the past few days, as no one had stopped by recently and she was starting to run low on money to pay for the building's rent. She sighed as Mello laid back down on the desk, and she began to grumble a bit, wondering if she should perhaps advertise online a bit more... And just then, the front doors opened up, and Mello hopped up from where he'd been laying to race over to the one who stepped through the door. With a bright meow, he pressed his body against the familiar figure's big shoes and lower legs, purring with joy to see the regular once more after they'd been gone for so long.
The owner looked over in surprise, before her eyes lit up and were met with that odd, yet not at all cold, crimson stare. "It's you again! Where- Oh!- Sorry, that's not really any of my business, heh.... Though Mello was getting worried about you!" she giggled a little, and the dark, yet much shorter figure couldn't help but cast a small smile her way, then down at the cat at his feet. He slowly knelt down, pulling his hood back before petting the friendly kitty as he readjusted his quills. Damn hoods... They're great for that "mysterious" look but are they truly worth messing fur up for?
"Hey there, Mello," his voice was far more gentle and warm than most would expect from a guy who looks like him, though to be fair, he really has never been the overly loud or aggressive type.
The cat purred against his touch, arching his back up against the gloved hand before suddenly leaping up and climbing up the hedgehog's sweatshirt and nestling into the now-open hood of it. Ah, yes, the wonderful claws of a feline. This is exactly why he wears thick sweatshirts when visiting this place, because he's gotta satisfy the hoodie-cat's needs.
"I... Don't mind the ask. A... 'Friend' of mine had... Gotten himself into a bit of trouble again, and it... Took much longer to handle than originally planned. That, and I... Admittedly lost track of... The days..." he sighed, feeling both guilty and quite like a fool.
"Hey, don't fret! It's alright! I know you're uh... Much more than a silly human like me, hah, you've got other more important things to be doing," the owner shrugged. The hedgehog turned his head to look over at her, mindful of his quills and the cat in his hood as he did so, before standing back up and turning to face her.
"I... Consider my visits here to be quite important, though," he sighed, shaking his head slowly. She eyed him, raising a brow.
"...You... Really look distraught over what's... Such a simple thing, I assure you," she tried to reassure him, noticing just how upset he looked, even if his voice didn't show it.
"How have you been doing? You've... Been alright yes?-" he blurted out with sudden great concern, reaching behind himself to pet Mello's head. Mello proceeded to bat at his fingers playfully.
"You know-"
"Answer me first-" he rushed, before closing his eyes, "...S..Sorry, sorry..."
"Hey, it's alright... Shadow, yes? I'm uh... Remembering your name right yeah?" she waited for a nod from him before continuing, "Again, it's alright, I'm just... Curious, really.... Why in the world are you so....?" She began to make vague gestures with her hands, not quite sure how to word it in a way that didn't sound weird or rude.
"I... I just...." he took a deep breath, before letting out a long, drawn-out sigh, "...Here, walk with me while I look at things, alright?" He asked this as more of an offer, rather than a command.
"O-O...kay? Sure," oh, now she's interested! She'd always sensed there was... Something strange about that hedgehog. His odd silence the first few times he'd come into the store, how he'd just suddenly entered on a whim that first time she'd seen him there, how he was... So incredibly generous to her, when he seemingly had no reason to be...
"It's... Going to be a long one, and... A strange one. I need you to promise that you'll believe me when I talk about these things, these parts of my life, parts of... Myself. Alright?" he gave her one final chance to back down if she wished... Yet, to his surprise...
"I promise, Shadow," she nodded in understanding, getting ready to listen to whatever story it was that he had to tell.
Yet, nothing could prepare her for what she was about to learn.
Shadow picked up a small, wooden figurine and looked over it, using the details of the odd figure to distract himself as he would begin to speak.
"It has been around... What, 8 years or so? Since... I... Well... I had been awoken from a 50 year long slumber," he started, going over the basics of the timeframe in which things had occurred in his life, pausing to allow the gal to process the information, before continuing once more. "I'll spare the details of that debacle, for now... And, 50 years before then, I had been locked in suspended animation, in a sort of coma... And, furthermore, around 2 years prior to then.... I was created."
The shop owner looked a tad dumbfounded, absolutely bewildered... Though the first thing she could manage to get out was, "How old even are you??????-" Man, she was.... Very confused.
"Physically? I was... designed as a 'mature' specimen from the get-go, so I don't really 'age' in those regards. Mentally? I'd estimate around 23, that's what I tell people anyway. It's been 8 years since I was awoken, and before then I was kind of... Designed to be mentally like that of a 13 year old... So the added 2 years would have made me around... 15 when I'd awoken.... And 8 years later? 23. Basic math, in those regards. I did not age while in mental stasis... I mostly just.... Didn't feel much at all... But I believe I... Still did dream... Not of anything good, though," his expression had seemed to grow a lot less tense while giving that explanation, as though something about that detail of his life were actually interesting to him. "With that answered, though, I should... I'll.... I'll save you the nitty gritty. I was designed to be... Like a hero to earth, and also a hero to the grand-daughter of the scientist who created me... I... Suppose I could just... Call him 'father', here."
He gripped the figure, starting to realize just how tense he was getting again. He'd... Rather not explain every damn facet of his life... "Chaos damn it... Basically... His... His grand-daughter. She was my best friend. Like a sister... and.....a..and.... GAH!!-" he tossed the figure aside in a sudden release of pent-up stress. He froze, looking over at the figure on the floor, all the while the owner stared at him with a mix of confusion and care. "........Her... Her name was.... YOUR name... Maria. And she's gone. And...." he said in a quieter tone as he walked over to pick the figure back up, tracing the details of it with his thumbs. The figure was in the shape of some sort of angel, he realized... Abstract in form, yet more obvious once you realize the intentions.
"You... Think about her a lot, I... presume?..." the shop owner, this Maria, spoke in a much softer tone, trying to pull her new friend's mind away from the past.
"....Yeah... Even if it's... Stupid. It's been so long, 8 damn years since I'd awoken and was reminded of my true purpose... And yet... She still... Lingers in my thoughts..." he gave a hushed sigh, "... And I think it's because she was... Far more than my stories ever make her out to be. I always tell of how she tried to save me, my promise to her, how she...." There was brief silence. "....Yet... I fail to ever properly explain who she'd been before that. What she'd done for me, how we'd become like... Family... Everyone only gets the parts where she did the tragic, heroic thing... But never the parts where she was just a girl... Just a kid like me, back then... How we'd had hopes and dreams amongst the stars together, how we'd planned our future out to become space explorers, how be agreed to one day get to step foot on Earth once more with no fear from her illness.... I always.... Would miss that part, back then. Because the trauma was always so damn much at the time... Because I couldn't bear to think of what we'd planned to have been..."
"At the end of it all... She merely wanted to help people.... And at the end of HER.... She wanted ME to help people...." he gave a somber, defeated sort of chuckle. "So... When I'd... Seen the sign here, I'd.... Begun to feel as if my feet were no longer my own. I drifted closer, felt drawn to this place... Because of such silly memories that I've attached to nothing more than a name. A word."
The Maria standing there near him just... Stared at him...
"Is... That part of your whole... Generosity thing toward me? Because.... My nickname is the same as your friend's?" she asked, not wishing to sound at all disappointed or anything, just truly curious.
Shadow simply nodded, his expression seeming to be one of slight guilt.
"That's.... Incredibly sweet of you, yknow that?"
He looked up at her, his eyes a bit wider, seeming to sparkle a bit with the tears he'd been holding back. "...Really?...."
"Yeah! You're a wonderful person... I want you to know that. You care so much, you don't try to forget what's important to you, even if it causes you pain. You don't give up, and that's.... An admirable trait. To let yourself follow your heart, to honor someone you cared deeply for... That's...That's amazing, Shadow," she gave him a warm smile, "...Y'know, I bet your Maria would be proud of you... For not hiding away, for not ignoring those feelings of yours. From what you've said about her... She seems like she's the type to be quite happy with where you are now... Though of course I didn't know her myse-" she was cut off by a sudden, instinctive whimper cry from Shadow.
The Ultimate Lifeform stood there, gripping the wooden angel figure in his hands, trying to keep himself from crying and yet... They escaped still, in the sounds of pathetic whimpers and whines, before he attempted to cover his face and wipe his eyes.
"...I... Like to.... Think that too...." he managed to choke out, before going quiet in an attempt to compose himself. Mello, still chilling around his neck, purred and rubbed his fluffy cheek against the hedgehog's, making him let out a sudden snicker and a snort through the tears dripping from his eyes.
After a little bit of emotional recollection, Shadow would finally be able to take full breaths, finally beginning to speak.
"...Thank you.... M... Mari?... I..."
"Is... It.... a bit of a struggle to say that name?"
Shadow sighed and huffed, slowly returning to his more usual demeanor already.
"That's okay y'know... Why not.... Anna?"
"Anna..." he repeated, before nodding, "...Anna works..."
He suddenly seemed to have locked onto some new task, looking around rather than at his new friend. She tilted her head and raised a brow, but apart from that she let him do his thing now.
Around 45 minutes later, Shadow returned to the counter with quite a few things. Old worn-out shirts and sweatshirts, the wooden angel figure, some old fidget-type toys, with one being one of those "rings interlocked that can be separated" ones, old mason jars, and various other strange and random things that he'd simply found intrigueing. He laid it all out on the counter, then began counting out his own cash for payment. It's... A bit annoying having to use human money, but if it works it works.
Anna helped pack it all up in a way that wouldn't be too much of a hassle to carry, despite how much shit there was, while Mello took the moment to hop down from Shadow's shoulder and onto the counter once more.
With his money counted out and handed over (and a bit extra snuck in as well), he began to pick up the bags of things to hold onto.
"I'll... Be seeing you. Next time I think I may invite my... friends... to check the place out," he waved, giving Anna a small smile as he put his hood back up.
"You too! Stay safe, bud, k?"
"'Course," his smirk grew a bit wider, "And you too," he added, before pushing open the door and heading out of the shop.
Once gone, Anna let out a soft sigh, then looked down at the cat butting her hand for pets. Mello simply looked back up at her, then let out a little meow.

This is SUPER rushed and semi-edited, but I wrote it in a frenzy bc I just couldn’t stop thinking about sonic movie 3 lmao… so beware?? It’s pretty lengthy lol
(Also sorry in advance bc I might get into a horrible habit of writing a bunch of these)
What the rating for sonic movie 3 could mean for the narrative and which direction the movie could go depending on the rating…
The rating changed from shth05 from the usual ‘E’ (Everyone) to ‘E 10+’ (Everyone 10 and Older), meaning that they were a little more liberated to go into detail about his past and his memories with Maria before she was killed on the Ark. The game further expanded on the darker and more ‘gritty’ perspective of Shadow the Hedgehog. Before it’s release though, shth was meant to be rated T (13 and older) with the initial version containing ‘red blood, violent scenes, and more instances of cursing.’ [(X) and (X)]
Sonic Movie 3 is currently slated for release in December of 2024 (x), but word from the directors and screenwriters have many concerned over how faithful to the games this movie will be because of Maria’s death scene. As well as wanting an accurate portrayal of Shadow the hedgehog for the first time since, debatably his portrayal in Sonic 06, fans look forward to seeing his backstory on the big screen.
Media ratings from the early 2000s were vastly different from the ratings of today. A subtle joke about sex would surely fly over children’s heads and could be aired on a Saturday morning cartoon, but no such thing could happen under today’s scrutinized media.
All of this to say… will Maria Robotnik be shot and killed on screen by an organization mirroring the government? There could be many different routes this option could take, and I list them now:
1.) PG/Heavily Implied Route
2.) PG-13/Realistically pull some punches
3.) Change the narrative completely
I start with what I believe to be the most probable option, based on the creators and writers desire to “incorporate elements from Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog.” (X)
Option 1: PG Route. As previously stated within its title, I’m certain of this route because of the options ability to stay within the PG rating and keep the narrative faithful to the games by letting the audience imply, as SA2 and Sonic X has done in the past. Disappointing as this option may be, it manages to stay within the established rating of the movie franchise and continue to stick with the games’ plot. However, a massive problem arises; how to imply such a disturbing and gruesome, but vital event whilst staying within these (frankly restrictive) ratings. I emphasize on the previously used ‘disappointment,’ as the implication may be lost on the general audience and with this loss, comes the loss of the overall theme of organizational workings and the very blunt reality of corrupt military organizations within our society.
And to stay true to both games, I introduce the second (subjectively best) option.
Option 2: Raising the rating from PG to PG-13. With this option, I believe the writers and directors can expand on the potential of both games and re-establish Shadow to his former glory, a character who once had concrete values and beliefs. Knuckles was able to regain his initially established honor and dignity within the latest installment of the movie franchise, as his character (like everyone else’s) had been the victim of flanderization and had been molded to fit more of a Comedic Relief character instead of a nuanced, three dimensional character.
With this new rating, creators have the space to expand on Shadow’s character, more specifically his morals and dilemma therein. In being able to see Maria’s death, and see Shadow at his most violent, the audience gets to understand or even empathize further with his character. An additional benefit to this rating change could be the general audience’s view on Sonic the Hedgehog as an overall franchise. It could inspire the Sonic gaming franchise to potentially follow up on lost possibilities of older games (wishful thinking) or create more nuanced and complex storylines such as what came of SA2.
Option 3: Changing the narrative completely. Objectively the worst option for both the audience and the writers/creators, this option has the writers/creators completely erasing Maria’s death and the corruption of (military) organizations to stay safely within the PG rating. In erasing Maria’s death, Shadow and, his creator, Gerald Robotnik would be stripped of their motivations for vengeance. However with this option, there are also two possible sub-options.
3A.) Maria still dies, not by anyone’s hand, but by her own illness, perhaps during the Raid on the Ark, causing a miscommunication to occur.
3B.) Maria does not exist.
As infuriating as both of these options are, they are very well options that could become Sonic Movie 3’s reality.
For option 3A, Maria dying by her illness would still create motivations for Shadow and Gerald, as the Raid would have ruined all of their work and the blame of GUN would be significantly less than in the original games. Perhaps this option could be better constructed, using the miscommunication to create even more conflict with both Shadow and Gerald Robotnik’s motivations, and Shadow’s final motivations in the game.
However, the worst option of the worst option is 3B. In erasing Maria’s character, Shadow’s very soul and Gerald’s strongest motivator goes with her. Shadow’s character, motivations, and actions all lack a significant reason and he becomes more of an Android than a tragic, empathetic, 3-dimensional character. Gerald Robotnik would become a descendant of Eggman who is just as selfish and egotistical (further taking Eggman’s potential to be seen as someone who strived to do Good as the original Gerald Robotnik did before Maria’s death, but let me get back on track)
With Maria’s erasure, Shadow’s character and Gerald’s reasons become corrupt. Both characters become forgettable and, worst of all, stray the farthest away from the source material, ultimately dooming the movie and possibly the franchise.
Both Sonic movies have done a lot for Sonic as a gaming franchise, and seeing the success of both franchises within the same year is very promising for the Blue Blur. As happy as I’d be to see a rating change, I must stress that I’d be content with whatever they decide to do. They’ve already expressed the want to stay faithful to the source material and we’ve managed to get two successful movies so far, so I’d say we’re in semi?? safe hands from a general audience standpoint.

G.U.N really was weird in sequels
People have talked about it not making sense for Shadow to be involved with them, and the weird whitewashing when in Sonic Adventure 2 they are the amoral worldwide military-industrial complex with a menacing acronym and willing to make Sonic a scapegoat.
But it doesn’t even make sense for ROUGE to be associated with them. Rouge was hired by a government agency, but it was to find out stuff G.U.N covered up.
The whitewashing of G.U.N is just really weird and goes against the usual politics of Sonic on nature and industrialization and peace and war.

“The sound of metal being torn open before it crunched almost sickeningly echoed through the chambers”
At the entrance, the moon Rising over the hills with night nigh, stood a pale hedgehog. Their eyes Glowed a brilliant bright blue as the shadows gloomed over their body, with only the moons light lighting up their features behind them. They threw their hands out, sparks of blue flying out of their wrists all while they gave a cold, threatening look.
“You are going to tell me where they are, now.”

Dc au- felt like being goofy
…but since Shadow is raising these plants i think we can classify this as a case of passing on generational trauma.
