"When Arley Gill, head of Grenada’s National Reparations Committee, envisioned his work seeking repair for centuries of enslavement on the Caribbean island, one thing was certain: It was going to be a long slog.

But just two years since its founding, the task force is fielding calls from individuals around the world looking to make amends for ancestors who benefited from enslavement in Grenada. 

“If you had told us this would be happening, we wouldn’t have believed you,” Mr. Gill says, crediting a burgeoning movement of descendants of enslavers getting wise to their family’s history and taking action. 

In Grenada’s case, the momentum began with a public apology made by former BBC journalist Laura Trevelyan and her family in February at a ceremony on the island. They apologized for their forebears’ enslavement of people in Grenada and their enrichment from it, pledging an initial contribution of £100,000 ($130,000) toward education on the island.

“She opened the doors for people to feel comfortable” coming forward, says Mr. Gill.

In April [2023], Ms. Trevelyan and journalist Alex Renton co-founded an organization called Heirs of Slavery. Its eight British members have ancestors who benefited financially from slavery in various ways...

Heirs of Slavery says wealth and privilege trickle down through generations, and that there are possibly millions of Britons whose lives were touched by money generated from enslavement. 

The group aims to amplify the voices of those already calling for reparations, like Caribbean governments. And it supports organizations working to tackle the modern-day consequences of slavery, both in the United Kingdom and abroad, from racism to health care inequities. But it’s also setting an example for others, drafting a road map of reparative justice for enslavement – at the individual level...

“Shining a light is always a good idea,” says Mr. Renton, who published a book in 2021 about his family’s ties to slavery, donating the proceeds to a handful of nongovernmental organizations in the Caribbean and England. “You don’t have to feel guilt about it; you can’t change the past,” he says, paraphrasing Sir Geoff Palmer, a Scottish Jamaican scholar. “But we should feel ashamed that up to this point we’ve done nothing about the consequences” of slavery.

Start anywhere

Most Africans trafficked to the Americas and Caribbean during the trans-Atlantic slave trade ended up in the West Indies. The wealth generated there through unpaid, brutal, forced labor funded much of Europe’s Industrial Revolution and bolstered churches, banks, and educational institutions. When slavery was abolished in British territories in 1833, the government took out a loan to compensate enslavers for their lost “property.” The government only finished paying off that debt in 2015. 

The family of David Lascelles, the 8th Earl of Harewood, for example, received more than £26,000 from the British government after abolition in compensation for nearly 1,300 lives, while “the enslaved people were given nothing,” Mr. Lascelles says. He joined Heirs of Slavery upon its founding, eager to collaborate with peers doing work he’s been focused on for decades.

“People like us have, historically, kept quiet about what our ancestors did. We believe the time has come to face up to what happened, to acknowledge the ongoing repercussions of this human tragedy, and support the existing movements to discuss repair and reconciliation,” reads the group’s webpage.

For Ms. Trevelyan, that meant a very public apology – and resigning from journalism to dedicate herself to activism...

For Mr. Lascelles, a second cousin of King Charles, making repairs included in 2014 handing over digitized copies of slavery-related documents discovered in the basement of the Downton Abbey-esque Harewood House to the National Archives in Barbados, where much of his family’s wealth originated during enslavement. 

“What can we do that is actually useful and wanted – not to solve our own conscience?” he says he asks himself...

“Listen and learn”

...The group is planning a conference this fall that will bring together families that benefited from the trans-Atlantic slave trade along with representatives from Caribbean governments and Black Europeans advocating for reparations. In the meantime, members are meeting with local advocacy groups to better understand what they want – and how Heirs of Slavery might assist.

At a recent meeting, “there was one man who said he wanted to hear what we had to say, but said he saw us as a distraction. And I understand that,” says Mr. Renton. “Maximum humility is necessary on our part. We are here to listen and learn, not try to take the lead and be the boss.”

Mr. Renton’s family has made donations to youth development and educational organizations, but he doesn’t see it as compensation. “I see this as work of repair. If I sold everything I own, I couldn’t begin to compensate for the lives my ancestors destroyed,” he says."

Farewell to You, ch 6

 Togetic flew over to Misty, tears rolling down its face. Misty was frozen for a second before she started to cry tears of happiness. She gushed, "You came back!"

Mitsy hugged Togetic so tightly as both mother and daughter both started to cry. Misty pulled out of their hug.

Lucy asked, "But what is Togetic doing here? Wasn't it supposed to stay in the Togepi Paradise? Isn't that what you told me, Brock?"

Kenny pointed out, "Maybe it sensed what was going on here and wanted to help."

Goh stated, "That's a good point."

Misty turned to Togetic, "If you are, that's wonderful news!"

Chloe frowned, "I think it wants to stay."

Misty's eyes widen as she turned to Togetic, "Is that true?"

To that, Togetic nodded happily. Misty had tears in her eyes as she brought out a pokeball. Togetic went in it and the red light dimmed. Ash was beyond happy for Misty.

Solidad stated, "Now that's what I call a happy ending."

Harley added, "Got that right, hun."

Brandon told them, "It still doesn't change the fact that we have no idea where Lugia is."

Luka thought for a moment and said, "We might." Everyone looked at her and she explained, "Lately Silver has been having a visitor. Another Lugia." Everyone gasped. She added, "And no one knows where it came from."

Anabel admitted, "It's a bit of a stretch but I think we should check it out."

Ash told everyone, "Let's split up. Dawn, Kenny, Paul, Ranee, Zoey, Todd, Barry, and Bianca will check out Mount Coronet. Misty, me, Brock, Brandon, Luka, and Lucy will check out near Ogi Island. Everyone else stand-by here in case something go south."

To that, everyone nodded. Dawn recalled Buneary. Dawn gave Johana a hug before she left. Johana returned it, kissing Dawn's head. They parted from their hug. Dawn went over to Ash.

Dawn told Ash, "Be careful."

Ash replied, "You too. You got this."

"Pika!" Pikachu said.

"Piplup!" Piplup said.

Barry said farewell to Palmer, who waved goodbye. With that, Dawn's team headed out. The weather had stopped changing for a few minutes as Ash turned to his mom. He gave her a quick hug. She returned it.

Delia whispered, "Be careful, Ash."

Ash winked teasingly, "You ought to know me better than that."

Delia laughed as she messed up his hair. Ash laughed as he turned to his team. They all nodded and then started to head out.

Misty told her sisters, "Wish us luck!"

Daisy, Lily, and Violet all said, "Luck."

As Ash's group left, Delia was crying. She was proud of the man that her son had become.

Palmer told her, "You know that they're going to be okay."

Delia sniffled, "I know... But you know as well as I do, I still worry."

Johanna admitted, "And that's when Dawn says not to worry, I still do. There's nothing wrong with that, Delia."

Professor Oak said, "That's so true. I worry about Andrew and Gary all of the time." He paused and slightly teased, "Someone has to."

Gary shot his grandpa a look, "Oh ha ha, gramps."

To that, Professor Oak chuckled. Max turned to Molly.

He asked, "Are you okay, Molly?"

Molly admitted, "Yeah, guess so. Thanks for checking on me, Max."

Max blushed, "Anytime."

To that, Molly blushed.

Anabel told Looker, "I think we should go to Shamouti too."

Looker nodded in agreement, "If anyone else wants to go with us, they are more than welcomed to."

Gary and Erika decided to go with them. The rest of them stayed behind, just in case.

...

Back with Dawn's group, they were climbing Mount Coronet. Dawn had grabbed her heavy coat from her backpack and put it on. It was starting to get really cold. Everyone had done the same thing. Kenny was wearing a light green heavy coat. Paul was wearing a dark purple heavy coat. Ranee was wearing a dark purple heavy coat. Zoey was wearing a yellow heavy jacket. Todd was wearing a red heavy coat. Barry was wearing an orange heavy jacket. Bianca was wearing an orange and white heavy jacket.

Dawn was clutching Piplup close. So close that Piplup was struggling in her grip.

"Pip!" Piplup complained.

Dawn perked up, letting go of her Water type.

She apologized, "Sorry."

Kenny asked, "Are you alright?"

Dawn admitted, "Not really... Just stressed. And scared..."

Kenny raised a brow, "This coming from the girl that says 'no need to worry' constantly? And the one that helped save the world more than once?"

Dawn blushed, "Kenny..."

Kenny told her, "Listen Dawn, there's nothing to be worried about. We have amazing teammates and an amazing leader. I know we can do this. We can do this together."

Dawn kissed him, making Kenny blush. Dawn pulled out of the kiss. She smiled at him.

She said, "Thanks Kenny."

Kenny stated, "Anytime, Dee-Dee."

Dawn flushed out of embarrassment but didn't protest.

Paul asked, "You two done yet?"

Dawn and Kenny both blushed as the rest of the group laughed.

Todd stated, "I can't wait to see Articuno again. Maybe I could get its picture again."

Zoey asked, "You really like taking pictures of Pokemon, don't you?"

Todd answered, "Well, yeah. It's always been a passion of mine."

Zoey stated, "That's pretty cool."

Todd blushed as he admitted quietly, "You're pretty cool."

Zoey perked up, "Wait, what?"

Todd faked a cough, "Coughing! I was coughing! Those weren't words."

Paul groaned, "I'm surrounded by idiots."

Ranee pointed out, "You're dating me so what's your point?"

To that, Paul flushed. Everyone laughed. Barry had Bianca's hand, smiling at her. Bianca laced their fingers, keeping him close.

Barry asked, "Are we getting there?"

Bianca admitted, "Not sure cause it seems like this mountain keeps going."

Barry stated, "I hope we don't get there too late."

Bianca shuffled herself a bit closer to her boyfriend, "Same..."

A shriek caught their attention. The team perked up. That's when they saw Articuno.

Todd breathed, "Articuno..."

Zoey stated, "It's beautiful."

Barry told the Ice/Flying type, "Articuno, we've come to warn you. The other legendary birds have been collected."

Articuno perked up, shrieking in surprise.

Bianca confirmed, "It's true. And we've come to protect you as well."

Dawn asked, "Do you know where Lugia is...? Maybe it can help?"

"Pip!" Piplup said.

Articuno shrieked as if it didn't know.

Kenny frowned, "That sounded like a no."

Before anything could happen, the weather changed again. This time, it was hailing.

Paul groaned, "Oh great, as if things couldn't get any worse."

That's when the airship appeared.

Penny Jasmine Duckton was born in London - this time.

You know some people say they've lived before...well that is precisely the case with Penny. Centuries ago, in her first life, she was known as Elizabeth. She'd fled from an arranged marriage, her father wanted her to boost the family's standing so instead of getting trapped in a loveless marriage - she took to the seas and became pirate.

On her journey she met a man with whom she fell in love with at first sight. It wasn't too long before she discovered that he was a creature of the night, and the whole world of supernaturals was opened up to her.

Despite her asking, he refused to turn her into a vampire - and then it was too later, she was shot in a battle, dying in his arms.

Unfortunately, a witch who had a grudge against the vampire cursed the woman to be reborn every other generation, a doppleganger of sorts. They would always find eachother, and she would always end up dying in his arms. A cursed, eternal love.

Penny (as she is known in this life) has moved to Bar Harbor in the hopes of escaping her past.

When she was barely 18, studying in London, she met a slightly older man. He was a doctor, and she was absolutely swept off her feet with him. They were quick to marry, and before long she fell pregnant.

All seemed perfect, but one night Penny returned home to find the apartment soaked in blood, her husband's body was nowhere to be found. The missing's person case was never solved, and she fell deep into a depression. When her son was born, she couldn't cope with it. Although this angelic, beautiful baby was the only thing she had left of her husband, she couldn't bring herself to look upon his face. Her son's eyes were his eyes and it broke her heart every time she looked into them. And so she gave him away.

The guilt has been plagueing her for years, but even still she got on with her life.

She's always been slightly odd, running on a slightly different wavelength to everyone around her, dreams of things that would eventually come to pass...

About a year ago, she began to have dreams of a strange man, and a place...Bar Harbor...and she was shocked to discover, after a quick google search, that it was a real place. The dreams haunted her for months before she decided to take an extended trip... underneath the paper was a sizable metal case, which when open, revealed a set of handmade watercolors. a paper is tucked above the pans which details what each color was made of: deep red from iron island deposits, red orange from fire stones, orange from dragonite scales, yellow from combee gathered pollen, yellow green from thunder stones, green from torterra's tree leaves, teal from a single salamence's scale, blue from a heracross' shell, purple && pink from floaroma flowers, a set of greyscales battle-chipped from bastiodon &&. rampardos, &&. a beautiful pearlescent white from gathered heart scales. Additional pans include mulled spheres gathered in the underground: red, green, blue, pink, &&. blue respectively. in addition to the watercolors, a handmade brush made from luxray fur can be found &&. a sketchbook clearly hand-bound.

It’s not something he often thinks of. How could such a day hold any importance when all he’s heard every year for so long was how much of a mistake it had been? How it should’ve never happened, how people would’ve been happier had it truly never happened? There was nothing to be found that would ever be worth celebrating in such a thing. It was easier to believe this than to expect something and feel the knife be twisted into an ever bleeding wound once again.

( it was supposed to hurt less this way, yet it never quite did )

So he just... never spoke of it, hidden away as if it was taboo. Never reminded anyone of it, never took part in such discussions, simply carried on pretending it wasn’t there.

Perhaps Volkner should’ve known better now. No matter how much he pretended he could just look away and act as if the pain wasn’t there— there were some who cared. More than even he himself did, more than he ever could. He should’ve known better than to expect truly no one cared. ( hadn’t he been proved wrong enough for it to finally sink in? )

And yet he still dares to be surprised when Birdy approaches, the smallest surge of panic when he finally does connect the dots— right, other people, normal people, they would be celebrating such an occasion, they would be going out, gathering friends and family, laughing and cheering between hearty meals and drinks long into the depths of the night.

Volkner couldn’t do that.

He couldn’t even think of standing half of it before feeling that ever present urge to run and retreat, to hide away in his silence and lonesome, and he knew they all weren’t like that, they all would want to celebrate and laugh together and share the warmth and— he wasn’t good for that. He could never give them what they wanted and deserved—

A small breath of relief the moment Birdy mentioned the idea of a party being pushed aside for now. ( it felt wrong to be relieved. no matter how this may be his own birthday, they all wanted to do more, they wanted to show him how much he deserved in their own eyes and yet he wasn’t even able to handle just that— ) And that’s when he finally focuses on the much too obvious fact that Birdy was hiding something, then eagerly offering it. Volkner blinks, once, twice, looking down at the offered present and— it finally hits him. This is for him. 

( he hasn’t deserved this, is the first thought crossing his mind. )

“... Really—?” That disbelief shouldn’t be there, and yet—

Right. He cares. They all care. No matter what he does or how much he fucks up.

“You really didn’t have to, you know...” it slips out without thinking, an instinctive feeling by now. And yet Volkner manages to accept the offered gift regardless, so careful with the wrapping as if it truly is something precious and to preserve. How could he not be careful with it, honestly? When Birdy clearly must’ve put so much thought and effort into something so small, for someone like him? When he’s always heard of how his hands could only harm? ( was the gesture alone truly something so foreign to him? something so hard to allow to sink in? )

Fingers hesitantly brush the cold, polished metal of the case— and we he does will himself into gently pulling it open, his eyes widen at the sight alone. The carefully crafted pigments, the fine brush, the paper— this is... it is all so much more than he ever expected, really. More than he ever deserved. It’s— it’s almost too much, in a way, and he can feel his voice failing him, a sharp breath and words kept to himself.

( he wouldn’t have been allowed this before. )

There is so much he wants to say. He doesn’t even listen to Birdy’s following words until he feels arms around him, the grounding touch he’d refuse to admit he needed. He’s at least careful enough to hastily close the case before he returns the gesture, perhaps with a little more strength than he should for someone as small as Birdy.

“Thank you—”

And maybe he could believe it was a day worth existing, after all.

Poconos Golf Trip

Developing an Environmental Impact Study on the Ballard to UW Light Rail Corridor

Hey all! It’s Palmer here, hoping everything is going well with your summer internships! I have been given the opportunity to work with Seattle Subway Foundation’s 501c3 branch! Seattle Subway is a non-profit, volunteer-based organization working to expand access to the Light Rail in the greater Seattle area. Their primary goals involve public outreach and grassroots advocacy to spread awareness of the benefits of public transportation projects. Currently they are working to hold local leaders and transit organizations accountable to the goals and timelines approved by voters in the ST3 extension plan. My internship is mainly focused on developing a Draft Environmental Impact Study based on the proposed extensions for ST4, which are delineated on the Seattle Subway Vision Map (pictured below) and have not been approved yet by voters. My research is focused on the Ballard to Sand Point Line Extension, which would connect U-District with the already approved Ballard Link Extension which is projected to be completed in 2035. I have been lucky enough to collaborate on this portion of the project with Mae Langford (also pictured below) who has been incredibly helpful in this process. Together, we have organized site visits to the Ballard/Fremont region to visualize possible Link station locations along SR99 and 46 Avenue and researched many of the residential and commercial impacts that a project of this scale may illicit. The other aspect of the internship has involved public outreach and social media. For this portion of the project, I have been attending various farmers markets and events in Capitol Hill, Chinatown/International District, and Ballard, where I have worked to spread awareness of current events involving transit projects, rallied support for Seattle Subway Foundation on social media, and garnered community awareness of Seattle Subways mission to expand grade separated transit systems attractive enough to compete with private automobiles.

One of the most interesting things I have come to realize during my time with Seattle Subway Foundation and my associated research is just how much of the public realm is dedicated to private vehicles, and how that infrastructure has affected the quality of life for pedestrians and urban dwellers. Most of the city’s land mass is developed for the automobile, which has created expensive and undesirable consequences for residents and municipalities. Some notable impacts include urban heat island effects, ambient air and noise pollution, stormwater contamination and expensive diversion systems, unsafe conditions and limited autonomy for children and young persons, economic losses resulting from traffic congestion, reduced access for the elderly and disabled, and reduced opportunities for socialization and community interactions. Cities with car-centric transportation infrastructure are less permeable and sprawl outwards from the urban center, gobbling up arable farmlands and wildlife habitat, at the heavy expense of taxpayers.

The greatest challenge so far has been in coordinating the actual Draft Environmental Impact Statement. These documents are often many hundreds of pages long and incorporate the help of electrical engineers, environmental scientists, political scientists, policy experts, transit authorities, and many others. Mae and I have a good deal of knowledge regarding environmental impacts and the tenants of sustainability, but we are not engineers, nor are we environmental lawyers, so this process has involved quite a bit of background research and collaboration with our site supervisors Keith Kyle and Arthur Backus, who have helped us visualize the finished product and narrow our research topics. They have provided valuable academic and media sources to illuminate some of the more confusing or complex aspects of drafting an impact study, and how current events have affected timelines and locations of future Light Rail stations. By collaborating with my site supervisors, meeting with my faculty advisor, and scheduling interviews with transit experts, I have no doubts that Mae and I will be successful in developing a Draft EIS on the Ballard to Sand Point Link Extension that will be useful to Seattle Subway in their mission to educate the public and influence decision makers.

Love Rhino is the debut solo album from Adrian Belew. He'd started out in Frank Zappa's live band, caught the attention of Brian Eno who got him work with David Bowie and then Talking Heads, touring, providing solos on Remain In The Light, playing on David Byrne's soundtrack The Catherine Wheel, Jerry Harrison's debut The Red And The Black and as a member of Tom Tom Club. his rising profile had gotten him a deal with Island so while recording Tom Tom Club's debut album at Compass Point members of Belew's band GaGa joined them and they recorded what was to become his debut album in parallel. Adrian Belew joined the King Crimson in 1981 and stayed with them until 2009

Mr Isaacs recorded the Night Nurse album at Compass Point with The Roots Radics and Wally Badarou on synthesizer. The dub is by Paul "Groucho" Smykle, you can find legit versions of four dubs by Paul "Groucho" Smykle (who also did the extended mixes in 1982) on the 2002 remaster CD

Barry Reynolds was a member of the Compass Point All Stars. I think beginning with Broken English he also had a long musical relationship with Marianne Faithful, he co-wrote the title track, Witches' Song, Why D'Ya Do It and is the writer of Guilt on that album. In 1982 Barry Reynolds records a solo album, the title track and single is a cover of Dan Hicks And His Hot Licks 1969 track I Scare Myself (which is a ballsy undertaking imo, Thomas Dolby has a go in 1984)

[1] They were celebrated years after and during the Revolutionary War, with newspapers often containing poems and songs. Such poems included one about William Sterrett in 1776 and a song by Tom Wisner titled “The Old Line.” Poems and ballads, which are narrative poems, not only appeared in newspapers but also in books. This post analyzes the 1901 ballad titled “The Maryland Battalion in the Battle of Long Island” and its author. [2]

The ballad’s author was a native Baltimorean named John Williamson Palmer. He was a physician by profession, but later became a journalist, and served as a New York Tribune correspondent in Richmond, Virginia during the Civil War. [3] He traveled across the world to India and elsewhere in East Asia, worked for the East India Company, and warned acclaim after contributing to numerous periodicals. [4] During the Civil War, Palmer wrote the well-known ballad titled “Stonewall Jackson’s Way” during the Battle of Antietam in 1862. [5] This ballad became one of the South’s most popular lyrics. This is not surprising because Palmer joined the Confederate Army and later served on the staff of John C. Breckinridge, the Secretary of War of the Confederacy. [6] After the Civil War, he published a book of folk songs and numerous other books of note. He had become, as his former employer, the New York Tribune, called him, “a veteran balladist” who will “be long remembered” because of his good verse. [7] By the early twentieth century, some claimed that he become a writer with “vigorous lyric faculty.” [8]

“The Maryland Battalion” was originally printed in a 1902 book titled Every Day in the Year. The book was a “poetical anthology” which commemorated “the most striking events in history” and the men and women who “have left an imprint on their day and generation.” [9] The ballad was printed with an introduction making it clear it was about the Battle of Brooklyn. [10] His ballad fits with those he wrote about Stonewall Jackson and the Battle of the San Jacinto in 1836 by exhibiting a patriotic theme, from his point of view. [11]

The text of this ballad is reprinted below [12]:

Spruce Macaronis, and pretty to see, Tidy and dapper and gallant were we; Blooded fine gentlemen, proper and tall, Bold in a fox-hunt and gay at a ball; Prancing soldados so martial and bluff, Billets for bullets, in scarlet and buff— But our cockades were clasped with a mother’s low prayer And the sweethearts that braided the sword-knots were fair [13] There was grummer of drums humming hoarse in the hills, And the bugles sang fanfares down by the mills, By Flatbush [14] the bagpipes were droning amain, And keen cracked the rifles in Martense’s lane [15]; For the Hessians were flecking the hedges with red [16], And the grenadiers’ tramp marked the roll of the dead Three to one, flank and rear, flashed the files of St. George [17], The fierce gleam of their steel as the glow of a forge. The brutal boom-boom of their swart cannoneers Was sweet music compared with the taunt of their cheers— For the brunt of their onset, our crippled array, And the light of God’s leading gone out in the fray. Oh, the rout on the left and the tug on the right! The mad plunge of the charge and the wreck of the flight! When the cohorts of Grant [18] held stout Stirling [19] at strain, And the mongrels of Hesse [20] went tearing the slain; When at Freeke’s Mill the flumes and the sluices ran red, And the dead choked the dike and the marsh choked the dead! “Oh, Stirling, good Stirling, how long must we wait? Shall the shout of your trumpet unleash us too late? Have you never a dash for brave Mordecai Gist [21] With his heart in his throat, and his blade in his fist? Are we good for no more than to prance in a ball, When the drums beat the charge and the clarions call?” Tralára! Tralára! Now praise we the Lord For the clang of His call and the flash of His sword! Tralára! Tralára! Now forward to die; For the banner, hurrah! and for sweethearts, good-by! “Four hundred wild lads!” May be so. I’ll be bound ’T will be easy to count us, face up, on the ground. If we hold the road open, though Death take the toll, We’ll be missed on parade when the States call the roll— When the flags meet in peace and the guns are at rest, And fair Freedom is singing Sweet Home in the West. [22]

At the time, the ballad was positively received. Noted writer Rossiter Johnson said it reminded him of classic lyrics of another balladist, while the Chicago Tribune said that the ballad, along with his other writings, had become “familiar to the American people.” [23] The St. Louis Republic called it “blood-stirring” and the Baltimore Sun said it had no less “dash and ring” than his other ballads and would, which “rouse the blood to action and enthusiasm.” [24] Acclaimed poet Charles D. Roberts even praised it, calling it a “splendid piece of work, inevitable and unforgettable.” This flattery is not surprising because the ballad was written in style of that time by catering to a Victorian appetite for heroes and legends and preserving the Maryland 400’s story, while cultivating Maryland pride.

Discovering the Story Behind A Pincushion

This white silk pincushion from the 1st World War was donated to the Collection in 1961, and is in the shape of an eight pointed star. Each point is edged in gold braid and hand embroidered with crossed French and British flags. The flags of the Allies and a green wreath are in the raised centre, surrounded by a ruched pink silk ribbon tied in a bow. The reverse is made from a black and white check woollen fabric and dark and light blue cotton. Card has been used to stiffen the individual panels, and there is also a hanging loop.

We have other “souvenirs” of the war in the Collection, such as handkerchiefs and postcards. All are embroidered in a very similar style with patriotic or sentimental motifs in brightly coloured silks. They were extremely popular with British soldiers to send to loved ones at home, and have survived in large numbers, despite their fragility.

Postcards and greetings cards of this type were already being made in France long before the outbreak of war. The embroidery was done by French or Belgian out-workers in their own homes. Pre-printed repeat designs were worked on narrow rolls of silk, and then sent to Paris, or other cities, to be cut up and assembled. Although their production peaked during the war, similar embroidered cards continued to be made until the 1950s, but later ones were machine embroidered rather than by hand.

The pincushion is in excellent condition, considering that it is now over 100 years old, but it is very doubtful that it was ever intended to be used. According to the Accessions Register, the donor, a Miss D E Hinton, told Rachel that the pincushion was “ made by the two old ladies, with whom her brother had been billeted in France. When he was killed in battle, the ladies had sent this souvenir to his mother, together with a letter written in French”. Having lost both of her own brothers in the war, Rachel obviously felt that this information should be recorded, but there was nothing more about the donor herself.

However, Miss Hinton also donated a sampler “made by her mother, Clara Louisa Branson of Island House, Loughborough”. By linking the provenance for both items, it was then possible to identify the donor as Miss Dorothy Eugenie Hinton (1891-1981) who was born in West Derby, Liverpool in 1891. Her parents were Clara Louisa (née Branson) and George Milward Hinton, who had married in 1878.

George and Clara had ten children: six daughters (Dorothy was the youngest) and four sons - Arthur Branson, b1890; George Milward, b1893. Harry Palmer, b1896 and Thomas Norman, b1901. At the time of the 1911 Census, most of the children were still living at home in Seaforth, Liverpool.

But which one was the brother who had died in France?

When their mother, Clara, died in 1946, both George (a tobacco merchant’s clerk) and Arthur (a fruit merchant’s manager) were listed as executors on the Probate Index. So, obviously that ruled them both out.

Although the youngest son, Thomas, would have been too young to legally enlist, some boys lied about their age. Had he done so? However his full name appeared on the passenger list for a ship leaving Birkenhead for Singapore in 1920, and also his marriage in 1926 - so it wasn’t him either.

And then, as final confirmation, George, Arthur and Thomas all appeared on the 1939 Register, which could only mean that the son who had died in the 1st World War was Harold Palmer Hinton.

Having his full name and date of birth, it was now easy to find Harold in the Commonwealth Graves Commission. He had served from 1914-1919, as a Private in the Royal Army Service Corps, in the 1st Heavy Military Transport Repair Shop.

Harold died on the 13 March, 1919 aged just 24 years. According to his Probate Index, he died at the “57 American Base Hospital Paris”. He is buried at Levallois-Perret Communal Cemetery in Paris. The cemetery Index confirms that he was the son of George Milward Hinton & Clara Louisa Hinton of Crosby Rd, Seaforth, Liverpool.

The Index also records that he had died of bronchial pneumonia, so the part of the provenance that he had died "in battle" is not completely accurate. Harold survived the war, but then died in the following year, whilst he was still serving in the army.

The cause and date of his death suggests that Harold was probably one of the many victims of the post-war “Spanish flu” pandemic of 1918-19. This was the worst viral influenza pandemic of the 20th century, and is thought to have killed between 20 and 40 million people worldwide – far more than the casualties of the war itself.

Selling his drinks in a song like madness there's so many selling I can't believe it everyone wants a real time cons everyone wants a real Arnold Palmer and that's the name Evan wants other players names and they want Preston to make one for his Orioles player just mentioned so many times so he made up a drink that he was drinking then and it's a normal drink and it's widely drunk and drinking and there is a name for it but his is just a little different but really it's not bottled tons of drinks are not bottled so where can I go ahead and do that now. And people can serve drinks at their bar that taste authentic and most of them have to be refrigerated after opening just to FYI and we sell a bar refrigerator.

We have a huge number of sales in cars it's massive the car that uses Briggs & Stratton has a little sticker on it and people are seeing it now in the same that's the one and they're going nuts buying it and those stickers in the window they're going to ape s*** buying this car I mean it is unbelievable they're looking for dealers where they are so we're asking for dealerships if anyone wants to run one as a franchisee no you'd be a dealer and they don't call it franchise in the structure is different and you make a portion of sales and we do recommend a price for your area and people do charge more and you're able to as long as it's not too much as long as you're selling cars but to be a licensed dealer it has to be within reason and we do say up to 20%, which is a lot of money because the volume is extremely high and these would be fully assembled cars and you have a showroom and it's very nice we make a nice showroom and we make it nice lunch area it's like a restaurant and some places have a cafeteria and it's wonderful it's great work and you work like a swing shift like our friend said here our father and mother actually okay and you work only a couple hours a day or 4 hours and you switch out just like a part-time job but people are making a lot of money as salesman and managers because they get a percentage of sales and a lot of times the people float around and trade out the jobs 2 hours in parts 2 hours of salesperson and they make a huge number of sales and there's a lot of people that buy fleets so please if you're interested sign on and we have training and it only takes a few days about 4 days and it's only 2 hours a day and we hand you the keys we do monitor and check in time to time but really people are selling the cars because their clans need them so step right up and sign up and we'll see if you qualified a lot of people qualify okay tons of people there's a lot of buildings that we can use home depots Lowe's Walmarts targets Costco's Sam's any of the big boxes no matter what to use are usually quite acceptable or even a cluster of medical buildings it can be broken up and we can still utilize it you have one showroom and several storage areas and a service shop and we do need you to have a service shop
