Chimeras in Paris...

During the night of Saturday, 1st of October, a massive call for help came from the Parisian Sewers Museum. Indeed, they were facing an extreme threat that concerned all the people living in the capital ! Under our feet lies a vast underworld that we never care about, and maybe we should. Kilometers of galleries can hide a lot of mysteries, and this is why anybody who wanted and was in great physical conditions got involved in a strange mission in the Paris underground.

On September 28th 2022, under the 7th district, work was carried out in one of the sewage collectors. Then, the employees discovered a sewage collector which wasn't listed. Two of them went in and never came out, so an alert was given.

After some investigations, it appeared that similar events had already happened in 1866 when an engineer called Nochar discovered a similar mysterious path in the sewers. According to him, this path could lead to a dangerous world “forbidden to humans”, so he immediately asked for it to be closed definitively. That's what was done, but Nochar died in strange circumstances two days later.

Knowing that, the SPEP (the paranormal service of Parisians sewers) suspected these two tragedies were linked, so they immediately asked for the help of anybody in good physical condition. It was essential to prevent evil from spreading to the surface. At that time, we took part in the adventure as volunteer investigators.

On September 30th 2022, they found a strange unknown man walking through the tunnels; apparently, the archives from Nochar's work could help us discover this man's identity.

Finally, on Saturday night, we came by teams of five investigators to help solve this mystery. We entered the sewers and had access to the archives. It was full of drawings and texts describing monsters and chimeras. Among all these documents we found out that the strange man was Charon himself, the ferryman of souls to hell in mythology.

We continued our investigation carefully, knowing that monsters could be here, in the tunnels, we came face to face with one of them ! But, it was a dead one, so we made a precise description of its apppearance on a note and went out of this dangerous place. An artist, Codex Urbanus, helped us make a photofit of the creature to complete the SPEP investigations.

As you may have understood, this experience was a cultural activity proposed by the Parisian Sewers Museum in collaboration with Codex Urbanus. It was really interesting because we had the opportunity to visit the sewers and learn about their functioning, moreover, we met a famous street artist and came back home with one of his drawings. In the end, I really appreciated the way the museum tried to arouse people's interest in the sewers in a fun way.

FR: EARTHAPP: THE APPLICATION THAT WARNS ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING

WHAT IT IS: In response to FaceApp, the notorious application that transforms the user's face into that of an elderly person, Greenpeace has unveiled EarthApp: a series of predicted photos of our planet in 50 years, in a bid to warn users about global warming. The idea is simple: post photos of the state of the planet as it will appear in half a century if nothing has changed. The results would show the disappearance of ice and snow and demonstrate drought and rising waters.

WHY WE LIKE IT: Challenges are more and more present on social media (e.g. ice bucket challenge) and although these phenomena are often funny or sometimes dangerous, the idea of diverting it into a movement to alert the public about the dangers facing the planet if we do not act quickly is an interesting idea. The consequences of our lifestyle are affecting the planet on all sides, and it is time for the younger generation, who are adept at social networking, to take them into account.
