It's been a heck of a time recently. Just got over having covid, and I'm doodling to get back into practice. Some various Polistes faces because why not? I actually really enjoy drawing facial expressions on wasps, it's relaxing and therapeutic. The two species pictured are P. fuscatus and P. dominula. I need to pick my brain and think up some new ideas for comics. It's been challenging lately. Well, that's it for now. Goodnight! ZzzZzzz

European Paper Wasp (Polistes dominula) in my backyard, May 2018. The first North American occurrence of this introduced species was in the 1970s, and it has since spread across the United States and Southern Canada. It seems to outcompete native paper wasp species such as the Dark Paper Wasp (Polistes fuscatus) because the Introduced Species hunts many insects for prey, not just caterpillars, and produces workers in its colonies about a week earlier than the native species. Colonies are founded by a single overwintered queen or sometimes multiple queens. If there are multiple foundresses, the one that lays the most egg will become the dominant queen and the others will become the first workers, expanding the paper nest and foraging for the queen's offspring. When you're evicted from the nest, but are too cool to care. I just realized, how would a wasp smoke? A or B? 🤔

Today's silliness: this is basically an expansion of an old cartoon I did years ago. The wasp's body in the original was cut off at the middle set of legs. I decided to draw him in his entirety.

Cartoon of the day. When I originally drew this a few years ago, the wasps were much closer together with the bottom halves cropped out. Trying to redraw it was awkward, so I made some changes. Spring is also finally here! I couldn't be happier about that.

I realized after drawing, that the Vespula vidua in the picture is actually a male. Regardless of caste, I'm sure the same outcome would have happened.
