Ramy is....the best depiction of being a (straight) man of color in America that I've ever seen, really.
I can't really describe it. If you have Hulu, or a cooler, more illegal streaming service of choice, just trust me and watch it. The narrative of being a first gen immigrant brown + Muslim dude are the core of the show and you really can't remove it from anything else that happens to Ramy as a result, and it's because of this I think it's so fucking powerful and effective. I'm a (straight) black guy which is a pretty different experience than being an immigrant of any sexuality, and therefore gives me an outlook that isn't really capable of doing the narrative the full justice it deserves. But I am still a (straight) man of color, so, y'kno, there's still a shit ton of resonance in a way I wasn't expecting. and I still cried a lot while watching this show.
So you just have to watch and see for yourself. If you wanna understand what the fuck I'm talking about on this blog at any given time, and don't wanna read a bunch of shit, I recommend starting with Ramy. It's written and directed in a way that only a man from the culture that's being portrayed can write and direct. Just go fucking watch it.
