Today in "Fun Trivia Found In Untranslated Side Stories" it turns out Julius had initially gone to Reinhard and asked him to be Anastasia's Knight for the royal election???
Her camp formation side story is insanely cute. She gets so mad at Julius for basically trying to set her up with another guy it's hilarious to read. Definitely gonna work on it right after kararagi girl and cat's eye.

In “No Rest For The Wicked” — how would Reinhard and Wilhelm respond to Subaru’s “condition”?? I can’t stop thinking about them —
Short reply: Badly lol.
Long reply: Reinhard tells Felt in one of the SS that he considers Subaru one of his dearest friends (Term is vague enough it can be considered “best friend”) this is after they met only twice— during arc 1 and arc 3. Those meetings remain canon on 'No Rest For the Wicked'.
Now, the way I see it, Rein doesn’t only consider Subaru his close friend just because of his personality but because Subaru gave him another chance to save the Royal Family (by helping him meet Felt).
So, we have a Reinhard who thinks Subaru (a kind, friendly person that doesn’t care he is a monster AND helped him fulfil his dreams of serving the Lugunican Royal Family again!!!) dying of the same ailment that took the Lugunican Royal Family from him originally!!! This is devastating news from him. He was very close to them, especially Fourier (though less than Ferris ofc.)
Reinhard was one of the people in charge of trying outside help to save the royal Family, and in addition to that: his mom has Sleeping Beauty Syndrome!! So he knows a lot more than the average person about the ailment that Subaru supposedly has. That’s why I imagine Emilia would go after Arc 3’s Royal Meeting to the Astrea manor and try to enlist his help to save Subaru. Felt would be there too, but he would of course, accept her request (Felt wouldn't be against it, ofc)
It would be Reinhard’s second chance to save someone from that disease.
This was all actually explained in a scene from the fic that I cut because it felt too…. different compared to the rest of the fic. It’s pretty serious for a crack fic (Random fact: whenever I write a fic, I usually draft many scenes and then cut down the ones that in my opinion don’t fit the general mood/style.)
About Wilhelm:
He knows that: Heinkel is using him as a rat lab to save Louanna. Subaru helped Reinhard meet Felt. And now Subaru is helping him kill the whale. In Wilhelm’s eyes, Subaru is putting the Astrea Family together again, despite being close to death himself!!!
As Subaru is going to the Whale hunt with Heinkel, I imagine the Wilhelm & Subaru interactions would get reduced on this verse. Those two still don't get along, after all. And Subaru needs him to keep Ferris away.
Somehow, I feel that No Rest!Wilhelm would see more Louanna than Theresia in Subaru. A very tragic figure he admires a lot.
And well, as we know, meanwhile Heinkel is:
Tumblr media
Thank you for the question OP! i had lots of fun replying to this!!! Feel free to ask more whenever you want!!

So I finished LN 1 and immediately started LN 2 (and am currently at chapter 3) and I thought before I go on I should take a minute and collect my thoughts
Random yelling under the cut:
the first loop is kinda like a tutorial quest for Subaru. He learns nothing from it.
or to say it more precisely he learns the wrong lessons: Subaru kinda bumbles himself into a win during the first loop. None of what helped him win was planned. And to say it more precisely, what helped him win were random acts of kindness: Reinhard deciding to help while not on duty, Emilia saving that child and showing her nature through that, Subaru empathizing with Felt and Rom and winning there trust that way, Subaru letting Felt go because she is fifteen and he is seventeen (and that scene gave me feelings - he is such a good boy!!!) Felt deciding to not run away but instead to run screaming and crying to the main road and than Reinhard once again deciding to help. Kindness is important. Kindness can change the world. Being kind and helping others is the way forward. ( and in a way you could argue that Emilia was saved in the end because she decided to be kind to a random stranger with a particular ability - I'm actually really curious what happened in the run where Subaru died immediately - did Emilia survive, did she get her crest back, how much did Subaru change)
So Subaru could have learned a lot here: sometimes it's better to be the coward who lives instead of being the heroic fool in everyone's way; it's important to be kind, and also important to let others be kind to you; he's in an incredible weak position so it's important to learn as much as he can as fast as he can, Emilia is kinda badass... There could have been a lot
Sadly Subaru is trapped in a heroic fantasy and decided to rework the whole situation in a way where only the last moment counts were he took the hit for her and learned: I need to be a hero and do awesome stuff to be loved AND there is a right way to do things (there isn't)
its pretty telling that in the moment were Emilia smiles and tells him her name he says "it's not worth it at all" because what Subaru actually wants is Emilia to be indebted to him for the rest of her life, she's supposed to be the reward for all his suffering (no wonder he becomes resentful once she tries to distance herself) and so Emilia becomes Emilia-tan and Subaru will start to ignore every hint that she is waaaaay out of his league and that she doesn't need a protector
The last chapter from Reinhards perspective was really funny. Watching the series I never realized how low Reinhards self esteem is. I always thought he was just humble
The relationship between Felt and Rom was really sweet. I really hope they see each other again
Found family is a big theme in re:zero
I never realized how cold/emotionless Puck is
Spoiler for LN 2:They really sanded down Subarus edges for the anime. The scene were he pets Emilia's hair as a reward is suuuper uncomfortable (i still think he is a good boy at heart though)

What are some common things you incorporate in your fics? Themes, feels, scenes, imagery, etc.
MY BAD it has taken me a little while to get to every fic writer question ive been asked pfft but i appreciate all of them and theyre really fun to answer :o and alright ok common things—character psychology is a big thing in all of my work :o aa every time i write a characters pov i try to do at least some research into their personality, backstory, etc etc bc my writing is almost always like?? character study type things?? i Really like delving deep into how characters think!!! :o so a lot of my works are like. you Will hear almost every thought in their head HAH. ive been told i have a very recognizable writing style widndnd but i do try to switch up internal dialogue at least a little bit depending on the pov character. i dont know how effective i am at that but i try HAH plus i think its fun trying to capture how someone thinks in the same way that youd try to capture how they speak in their dialogue. i think the most obvious example is probably my recent reinhard stuff—i tried to sound more formal with him? even with little kid reinhard i wrote his internal dialogue kind of formally because i figured that Might be able to create that bit of Dissonance that reinhard has as a character, you know? hes uncanny.
and uh because i focus on internal dialogue a lot, by the nature of things i kind of Have To slap the unreliable narrator tag on the vast majority of my fics HAH but unreliable narrators are fun and i love playing with them!! and i think its realistic in the sense that even a character thats very fair and just and honest may still have the wrong information at times or have emotion cloud their judgment or be a little unreliable for those reasons. that and i tend to pick the mentally fucked characters (which is pretty easy with the rezero cast HAH) whenever i write Very detailed internal dialogue so!!! unreliable narration and spirals into madness it is!!! i just really like exploring like. the humanity behind each character and all their nuances <3 and i Love having to squint at internal dialogue and add that up with a characters thoughts and actions and figure out who this person Actually Truly Is Like?? its like a puzzle :o !!
as for themes. i went into this a lot in another fic writer ask thingy but Definitely like. when characters change as a result of shit hitting their fan and/or their own choices and now theyre Different from the person they used to be. they came back wrong so now what are they going to do? how are the people around them going to treat them now? how will they treat the people around them? i just really like going into like. identity crisis… and um…. suffering that triggers massive self searching bc. the character changed in some way in order to survive through it physically and/or mentally. like seeing characters change for the worse and seeing them either try to crawl their way out or they. keep going down. it can be hopeful or very tragic!!! (bc i love hurt/comfort and tragedy a lot ajdnd) and complicated relationships are a huge favorite of mine to tackle. fascinating multi-layered stuff that i want to study under a microscope!!! i like when multiple contradictions exist within a dynamic or like. a character and their journey. the complexity feels very real to me and i find it intriguing :o
i also love queer themes but due to um. some of the toxicity in this fandom i do hesitate to do stuff with that in this fandom but i DO love queer themes its just not in most of my work atm but thatll change eventually 👍 ill at least slip in a little bit every chance i get 👍👍 (i have exactly one fic with queer themes atm wjdnd)
motifs/random imagery i use a lot also!!!! mostly bc i find them cool and fun but. yes theyre there for a reason. in my first pride otto fic i used second person pov and avoided using his name at points to emphasize that hes 1. being dehumanized and 2. hes dehumanizing himself too as a result. i uhh have also used star related things for subaru a lot bc Of Course. butterflies and moths for emisuba things…. economics themed titles for my pride otto multichap…. bugs for general pride if things…. comparing the knights uniform to bird wings in my reinhard and heinkel fic… i like to describe outfits in general too (pride otto vs main ottos outfits, also felix not wearing blue in the 2 seconds of screentime he has in my pride if fics atm wkdndn) etc etc :o

Hello! Sorry at bother you but I would like to know if you can give more information about Reinhard or what you think about him, please? The few comments about him that I found on the internet say that he is plain and boring, which doesn't really give much info about his personality. I don't mind spoilers at all.
originally i was uninterested in him for those exact reasons. But he’s actually become one of my favorites out of the bachelors now.
So reinhardt is basically a samurai and he speaks very much like one. He’s very formal, a bit reserved, and takes his job as retainer/bodyguard to Beatrice seriously. This is why he comes off as boring and plain.
Once you see his heart events, you get a bit more perspective on him. He’s from a poor family and bc of that, he doesn’t like to throw things away just bc they are worn down and will instead mend them for further use. He also picks up things and basically is a hoarder bc he can’t throw stuff away lol. He’s also not good at cooking and will ask you, the player, for help with choosing ingredients in one of his events.
You can woo him easily bc he loves failed dishes and chemical x, (in his event he is served a failed dish by Fuuka and tells her it is delicious even though he can taste that the food is bad??? but he still says it’s good??? lol???) but he also loves sandwiches too.
What really changed my opinion on him is when you start dating him. His dialogue with the player is so far in my opinion, the best out of the other 4 bachelors (Lucas not included bc i haven’t gotten him to date me yet). He has the most romantic lines and actual conversations with the protag that felt reminiscent of rf4 dialogue. You will actually feel like a genuine couple more so than with the other boys which is...pretty sad imo.
Again this is all my opinion, others may feel differently about Reinhardt. Personally I think he’s the “chivalrous, protect my s/o with my life, wants to be the best version of himself for his s/o” type of guy. And you can’t really go wrong with that unless you’re the type that likes the mean tsundere bad boy lol. In that case you can date Ryuka but he’ll barely say anything that makes you feel like you’re his girlfriend lmfaoooo
hope this was helpful for you 🤲

Binge-Watching: Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Episodes 27-31
In which Reinhard leads the empire into a new day, Yang stands against a crumbling democracy, and the show starts fleshing out its supporting cast.
A New Page
It’s a new day in the galaxy. Not a particularly bright day, but a new day nonetheless. Kirchies’ death and Reinhard’s ascendancy to control of the empire has marked the start of a new chapter in Legend of the Galactic Heroes, complete with a new OP and ED (Though really, they’re both just iterations on the aesthetics and thematic ideas of their predecessors). And while this chunk of episodes is mainly about setting up future plot threads, only really getting started in episode 31, it’s clear that thins are going to be quite different moving forward than we’re used to. For both the Alliance and Empire, and everyone stuck in the middle of their conflict, the old status quo is truly gone. As the next episode previews are constantly reminding us, a new page has turned in the history of the galaxy. So let’s take a look at how this state of affairs is evolving, and what lies in the future for Yang, Reinhard, and everyone else.
First, the good news: Reinhard’s new regime is actually working out pretty well! He’s brought about reforms to improve the people’s lives, he’s harsh but fair on the nobles who brought about the crimes of the Goldenbaum era, he isn’t pursuing bloody revenge or purges against the remnants of the Kaiser’s bloodline, and he treats his subordinates with the same understanding he showed in days past (”It’s useless to apologize for each defeat. You must have one victory for every defeat.”) True, there are worrying signs that losing Kirchies is taking its toll on him, and it’s obvious to everyone that no one will ever be able to replace the incredibly important role Kirchies played as Reinhard’s emotional core. With Kirchies gone, Reinhard no longer has anyone who really “gets” him to fall back upon, to the point where sweeping romantic music plays as he gazes at the strand of red hair in his locket (Seriously, so many problems would’ve been solved if these two had just gotten married and fought as a power couple). And with Fezzan making moves to support his reign right up until they pull the rug out from under him, there’s still plenty of chances left for him to descend into darkness. But for the time being, his coup d’etat has been everything that the Alliance’s coup tried- and failed- to be. Even Yang’s forced to admit that while Reinhard’s authoritarian rule certainly isn’t government by the people, the reforms he’s instituted have at least resulted in a government for the people. If nothing else, that’s an undeniable improvement over what came before.
How Democracy Dies
Sadly, the same cannot be said of the Alliance. While stopping the military coup was undoubtedly the right thing to do, the fact that the old political regime was re-instated has only emboldened an already corrupt system to plunge even further into anti-democratic power grabs. After all, who could complain if they exert even more power over the military now? Who would stand up and say the military’s being treated unfairly after the military almost destroyed the nation in a mad scramble for power? It’s the perfect excuse for schemers and autocrats to entrench their power further, to use even more brazenly authoritarian measures to prop up their legacies. As the leaders of Fezzan rightly point out, nations are rarely brought down by external threats alone; they collapse by rotting from the head down and the inside out. And the rot at the heart of the Alliance is now metastisizing into a full-blown cancerous tumor, a cancer of secret police, extrajudicial kangaroo courts, and an increasing disdain for such childish concepts as “freedom” and “equality.” Democracy is dying not at the hands of an invading monarchy, but by its own increasingly bloodstained hands.
And once again, Yang is caught right in the middle of it all. As a people’s hero who’s also been pretty public about now being the war’s biggest fan (”It may seem serious to those in it, but war is a great example of farce.”), he might well be the most dangerous man for the increasingly corrupt government. But of course, he can’t just retire and run away from the military life to save his own skin; there’s no telling how bad things could get without his voice, even if using that voice only puts him in increasing danger. He can’t run from history now, even as he wonders how many lives would’ve been saved if he never joined the military in the first place. Would all the men who died under his command had survived if he never led them into battle? Or would his absence at the helm just ensure even more needless bloodshed at the hands of incompetent, corrupt commanders? There’s no way to know for sure, and there’s no way to back out now even if there was. All that’s certain is that Yang cares too much about doing the right thing to back out now. Even as he rages and threatens to resign, the tides of history have already swept him up, and like it or not, he’s going to ride those tides to the bitter end.
And when things come to a head in episode 31′s inquiry scene, god damn is it electrifying. This whole subplot is basically just an excuse for Yang to give a lecture on democratic ideals and channel the collective anger of every normal citizen who’s ever dreamed of going up to Capital Hill (or whatever the non-American equivalent is) and rubbing the political machine’s hypocrisy right in its stupid face. And I don’t mind one bit, because my god, he is on fire. He fires off countless smart observations on the nature of political systems (a nation is made up of people, and therefore people as individuals should be more important than the nation in an abstract sense), he shoots down bullshit, meaningless rhetoric (”Would you mind telling me what these “needless misunderstandings” are?”), and I’m pretty sure he implies at one point that had the inquirers been taken captive during the coup, he wouldn’t have prioritized saving them. This motherfucker’s balls are so big and brassy that he tells his jailers to their face he would have let them die to save his country. Good. Fucking. GOD. Miracle Yang has no chill whatsoever, and watching him call out injustice right to its face was one of this show’s best moments yet. The corrupt politicians are right to be scared of him; all he needs is to be pushed a little further, and he might just bring this entire damn regime crashing down.
For the People
Beyond these broad strokes, what stuck out the most to me is how many little humanizing moments are scattered throughout these episodes. It feels like LOTGH is making a concerted effort to flesh out its background characters and give its huge supporting cast some much-needed emotional grounding. We learn the backstories of Reinhard’s two closest admiralsa; Mittermeyer is a royal dork who’s fighting for the sake of his wife back home, Reuenthal is a cynical bastard child who was taught as a child how unfair the world can be, and yet they’ve somehow ended up good friends who can lightly banter over a game of cards (”You should stop pretending to be more stupid than you really are.”) We also spend more time with Cazerne, the admiral who introduced Julian to Yang in the first place, and get a sense for the makeshift family they’ve made together (”I take all the stress so my wife can look younger.”) We get a sense of how much Yang cares for Julian, how nervous he is now that the younger kid’s finally a real soldier, how much he respects Cazerne and appreciates even his most critical words of wisdom (”Children don’t grow from having perfect parents. Rather, they develop a sense of independence by learning from their parents’ faults.”), and it’s just... nice. It’s nice to learn more about these characters as characters, what they care about, why they care about it, why and how they matter to each other. This show’s cast runs the risk of feeling like stuffy, bland chess pieces in this massive game of war, so I’m glad it’s finally taking some time to make me care about them as people too. Hopefully it keeps that energy up going forward; if this show can make me give a shit about characters beyond Yang and Reinhard, it might just live up to its incredible legacy.
Odds and Ends
-”In case you don’t know this, I’m an ace pilot!” dkfjhsfkhsdf their faces
-Yoooo, he’s ghost-riding the whip!
-”That’s twenty-two for me!” Man, this fleet is more playful in battle than I’m used to. Weird.
-Seriously, why does no one talk about how good this show’s ship battles are? They’re so good!
-”Haven’t I always told you not to do anything dangerous?” What a softie.
-”So the chief of staff is hated by everyone, but loved by a dog?” I love how literally nobody likes Oberstein, lol.
-Heh, even religious extremism is a bridge too far for Fezzan.
-”You’ve become a warrior in the war of daily chores, Julian.” Lmao, nice.
-”Plenty of great men were bachelors for life. Shall I draw you up a list?” Yang, I appreciate you.
-”What gall you have, to turn the life and death of a nation into a deal.” That’s politics for you.
-”The living work of art known as Marquis von Lohengramm.” He really is a poet.
-”It’s almost like a political ad for the previous imperial regime.” “Surely not... although I suppose it could be taken that way.” Oh look, it’s me overanalyzing the sociopolitical messages in children’s cartoons.
-”No, no, don’t cross your legs! Sit up straighter!” Ooh, something about that really ticks me off. They won’t even let Yang be himself.
-”You are a radical anarchist!” “No, I’m a vegetarian.” JESUS CHRIST YANG YOU ABSOLUTE GOD
-”If you have a model answer sheet, may I see it?” This man. THIS MAN.
-Hah, no fucks given about talking in a bugged room. I like Bewcock more and more.
-Can we appreciate that this very grounded, realistic sci-fi war story also has a subplot about sticking a bunch of giant fuck-you engines on a planet-sized space station to make it jump through a wormhole? I just think that’s neat.
Looks like we’re in for one tense-ass battle next time, both in space and on the ground. See you then!

Fandom5k 2021 Letter
Dear creator,
Thank you for taking your time to check my requests. I know my requests can sound a bit tricky, but please don’t be discouraged. I wish you will have good time writing first and foremost!
My AO3 is Tren, if you wish to check it out.
Likes: comedy, casefics, canon compliants, AUs, time loops, bodyswaps, roleswaps, “being hoisted by your own petard” plotlines, snark, pettiness, rivals, enemies to friends to lovers, violence, friendships, and character bonding,
DNW: explicit sex (makeouts and fade to black is okay), A/B/O, mpreg, rape depicted as positive (so no “it’s okay, because the other person enjoyed it/it was what they truly wanted”), trans headcanons, soulmate AUs, stories ending with surrender to fate/destiny, fourth wall breaking in canons where that doesn’t occur, character has cancer or other real-life terminal disease AU, word “queerplatonic”.
Also, I included what ships I’m okay with in each fandom. Please do not include any ships that aren’t canon and I have not allowed in those sections (if you feel really strongly about a ship I haven’t mentioned, you can always ask through mods just in case).
On a separate, but similar note, I’m okay with OCs as long as they don’t overshadow the characters I requested.
Additionally, while I almost never request fanart as possible medium, because I prefer my main gift to be fic, I would be very okay with receiving fanart treats. Also, feel free to peruse my old letters if you get your hands on them. I never stop being interested in fandoms, and if I requested something once I will still want it in the future.
                                            REQUESTS
MARIMASHITA! IRUMA-KUN
I read new manga chapters as they get translated so feel free to incorporate anything from the manga that’s available in English.
Kirio Amy/Suzuki Iruma
There are many good ships with Iruma, but this one just has a lot things I like. I love enemy ships with both sides being way too emotionally invested into each other so this was inevitable. I love how this relationship starts as this really wholesome friendship and school festival preparation, except Kirio turns out to be a bit messed up and wants to blow up everyone. But then they both accept the outcome and go on with their lives still thinking about each other. Iruma goes through a lot of trouble to keep the club operating even though Kirio has been pretty much expelled. And then Kirio is now obsessed with Iruma as his anthitesis and perfect enemy.
I’m okay with the potential story happening at any point in the canon. I would love both a story set before the festival while Kirio is still hiding his true colors or a story set after it. Maybe Iruma runs into Kirio somewhere after he escapes prison and instead of calling an adult, he tries to stop Kirio from causing trouble on his own. As for pre-festival story. Maybe some upperclassmen steal important parts from the club and Iruma and Kirio set out to get them back.
Naberius Callego & Suzuki Iruma
I love Callego for being a much better take on Snape than original Snape ever was. The second the series made Callego Iruma’s familiar I knew this was about to get good. And it was. I love how Callego slowly warms up to Iruma, even if he is still allergic to his and Sullivan’s antics. I love that Callego is actually a competent teacher who cares about his students, but at the same time he would rather eat a whole lemon than admit it out loud.
For prompts, maybe Sullivan ends up having an important business and Opera isn’t available so he dumps looking after Iruma on Callego for a few days. Or Iruma is struggling with studying since so many things are new for him, so Callego ends up forced to help him catch up with the material (if you are following manga inclusion of Balam is always welcome). Or maybe Iruma gets into usual trouble ends up stranded somewhere and the only one he can call for help is his familiar.
Crocell Kerori | Kuromu/Gyari
One of the last thing I expected to get this year was a canonical yuri romance in this manga, but here it is and it’s perfect. I love how it is pretty much built on mutual pining. I love how Kuromu loves Gyari, but refuses to reciprocate her feelings, because she knows that she needs to remain unattainable to keep their relationship alive, and I love how Gyari is never ever going to give up.
I would love to see more of the time when they worked together. We know it was love at the first sight for Gyari, but I would love to see how Kuromu’s feelings grew. Those hours they spent together practicing, maybe a not-date where they sneak together to scout a venue where they will be having their first big concert, or maybe a small contest that would sow the seeds for their future rivalry. I would love any and all of it. Also, Gyari doesn’t seem to be aware of Kuromu’s civilian identity, so I would love a story where Gyari meets Crocell Kerori rather than Kuromu. Does she recognize her? Or does Kerori manage to successfully trick her? Maybe Gyari makes a full investigation after hearing rumors that Kuromu is attending Babylys. I would also love any sort of future fic for those two.
AUs and ships
I love the worldbuilding around the demon world, so I would ask that if you decided to write an AU that it still incorporates demons. I would definitely love an AU where rather than getting summoned to demon world, Iruma accidentally summons either Kirio or Callego into the human world. Maybe Iruma’s parents try to use him as an offering, but instead he ends up bound to a demon. I would love to see Kirio excited to unleash suffering (even if his weak powers severely limit him in that regard) onto human world just to discover that he made contract with the biggest pacifist possible. Or Callego being torn between wanting to return home as soon as possible (he has classes to teach!) and wanting to somehow help the weird human child that just keeps getting into trouble. Any other demon-focused AU is also welcome. For Gyari and Kurmou, maybe one of them is a human who ends up summoning the other as a demon. How different would their relationship be then? I’m also fine with any sort of AU divergences scenario. Maybe Iruma keeps accidentally sabbotaging Kirio’s terrorist plans without realizing it. Or Iruma ends up summoning Callego more often as his familiar when he gets into trouble. What if Gyari also attended Babylys.
As for ships, I’d rather avoid any love triangle scenarios for this canon, so please focus on just one pairing per character (competing for Iruma’s attention is normal for this canon, I’d just rather not see outright romantic competition). It’s self-explainatory for Kirio request, but if you want to include some shipping elements into the other requests I also ship Iruma/Amelie and Callego/Balam.
RE:ZERO
I watched the two season of anime, as well as the two OVA. Please don’t include any spoilers for events that haven’t been yet adapted. I’m fine with mentions of stuff from the light novel that adaptation has skipped, just please make sure to establish them properly, as I haven’t read the light novel.
Natsuki Subaru/Otto Suwen Natsuki Subaru & Felix Argyle & Julius Euclius & Reinhard van Astrea Roswaal L. Mathers (Re:Zero)
Echidna the Witch (Re:Zero)
Feel free to mix and match my requests (or cut off parts of the requests and stitch them together). Or include any other characters, I love all of them.
Natsuki Subaru/Otto Suwen
I came out of second season with a burning desire to see Otto and Subaru getting together. Otto was the MVP of the second season. Like sure, Emilia killed it in the last few episodes, but none of it would happen if Otto didn’t slap Subaru in the face when he needed it the most. Subaru even commented that Otto was like a heroine in a game at one point. They just care so much about each other and I would love to see them actually get together.
I would love to see them going on an undercover mission. Maybe they are trying to gather the information about witch cultists. Maybe they need to pretend to be a couple for the sake of their investigation. Or Emilia sends the two of them on a fake mission that actually consists of them visiting places of relaxation to make sure Subaru finally gets a break. And Otto’s mission is to make sure that Subaru actually rests and doesn’t get in trouble, but this proves to be a much more difficult undertaking that he expected.
After first season I had a working theory that Otto is actually a sin archbishop who is pretending to be a normal person for some unknown reasons (or maybe has a split personality). Season two pretty much disproved it, but I still adore that idea and would love anything with it.
Natsuki Subaru & Felix Argyle & Julius Euclius & Reinhard van Astrea
I immediately loved the queen candidates’ knights and the relationships between them. I would greatly enjoy seeing them work together. Maybe someone is plotting to harm queen candidates and they join forces to bring them down. Or maybe the queen candidates are busy with some bureaucracy and the bored knights decide to spend a night at town, which ends with all sorts of shenanigans. Maybe Subaru and Julius decide to have some sort of competiton that hilariously goes out of control. Or Reinhardt and Subaru rope everyone into helping some poor grandma, but her straightforward request ends up becoming much more difficult to execute than anyone predicted. Also, at the end of second season Subaru officially became Emilia’s knight and I would love to see other knights throwing an unofficial party for Subaru to celebrate this achievement. Or maybe their planned celebration doesn’t go as planned and Subaru ends up accussed of a crime he didn’t commit. Luckily, there are three very handsome and equally capable knights who believe in him and are willing to help him clear his name.
Feel free to also include Aldebaran into the group if you want. He had very little screen time in anime, so I didn’t want to make this request more difficult than it already is, but if you want to write him too I would be very happy with his inclusion.
Roswaal L. Mathers (Re:Zero)
Roswaal was incredible in the second season. I loved the parallels between him and Subaru! I loved his unrequited crush on Echidna! I loved Ram’s unrequited crush on him and how her actions ended up affecting him! I loved how Emilia made him apologize! He just had so many great interactions. I would just love to see more of Roswaal.
We know that Roswaal attempted to undertake the trial, but was rejected. What if by some quirk of fate Roswaal could undertake the trial. How would it go? Would he be able to accept the past? I would also love a deeper insight into his thought process during the Sanctuary arc, but also earlier arcs. How did he feel about Subaru and other characters? What happened to him after the Subaru failed? (we don’t know if Subaru dying creates new timelines or if there’s one that gets reset, while this prompt leans on former, I’m fine with both interpretations) I would also love to see if maybe Ram had attempted to destroy Roswaal’s book or shown her feelings for him before. On a different note, I would love Roswaal being a bit too interested in Otto (after he had changed the fate written in the book) and trying to figure out how he had achieved that. Honestly, I would love to see Roswaal interact with anyone. You could write him and Reinhard meeting in a bakery and I would love it.
Echidna the Witch (Re:Zero)
Echidna is best witch (at least until anime shows more of Sekhmet who I can already tell is my spirit animal witch). I loved Echidna’s character, the aura of mystery she built around herself, and her plans involving Subaru. She was just incredible.
I would absolutely love to see Echidna holding trials for other characters. It doesn’t matter who. Maybe Garfiel ends up completing all of them. Or maybe by some twist of fate Otto gains qualification and takes up the trials. Or Ram, or really anybody else. I just loved how personalized the trials were and would love to see them for other characters and what Echidna would think of them. I would also love to see more of her interactions with Subaru. Maybe Subaru makes deal with her, but belatedly realizes it was a bad idea and tries to find a way to break it. I would be also very okay with seeing more of her interactions with other witches. Or Emilia. I will gladly take 5k words of Echidna being completely done with Emilia’s positivity. Maybe Echidna finds a way to escape her deadness, but she needs to enter a contract with Emilia and now she is her familiar like Puck was.
AUs and ships
I would prefer no setting changes for this story. Any other AUs are fine. I especially love Subaru’s reset mechanic, so feel free to abuse that if you want. If you want some AU ideas, maybe another character starts remembering bits and pieces of the reseted timelines.
I like Subaru/Emilia, but the show is doing such a good job with it that I’m not craving more. As such I’m okay with acknowledging Subaru’s canon crush on Emilia, but if you are planning to do any other pairing involving Subaru I would prefer to reframe Subaru’s feelings for her as friendship. I’m okay with pairing Subaru with pretty much any other guy in the series (especially other queen candidate knights) or leaving who he will end up with ambiguous.
SOUSOU NO FRIEREN
I read new manga chapters as they get translated so feel free to incorporate anything from the manga that’s available in English.
Frieren
I love how this manga is a slow-paced fantasy dealing with loss and inevitable passage of time. And I love Frieren for being one of the best depictions of an elf whose long life actually affects their outlook on life and actions.
I would equally love the insight into Frieren’s present with her charges and the past with hero party. What other shenanigans they get into on their journey? What kind of weird magic Frieren pursued? I would love to see more of her mentoring Fern and Stark. I also love to see her interactions with the hero party. Maybe some more insight into how they fought with demons, since Frieren seemed to have picked up a number of enemies during that time. For some more specific prompts: maybe Frieren accidentally stumbles ona cursed item that erases her memories (or just her memories of Himmel). How would it affect her? What would the party do to help her? Or maybe a demon kidnaps someone from Frieren’s party?
Feel free to include any other characters, they are a colorful bunch.
AUs and ships
I’m fine with AUs as long as Frieren’s long lifespan is preserved. Her perspective is very much shaped by how long she has lived, so I wouldn’t want that aspect to change. An AU with mythological creatures or similar could be interesting. I would also love a roleswap where Himmel is an elf, while Frieren is a human, and exploration of how both of them would be affected by having a different lifespan.
I would very much love Himmel/Frieren, though I also enjoy how the manga softly builds on their connection. I also enjoy the budding romance between Fern and Stark.
HATARAKU MAOU-SAMA!
While I made this request mostly with anime in mind, I also consumed the original novels up to (and including) volume six. So feel free to include anything from the novels up until that point if you want, but nothing beyond that.
Maou Sadao/Ashiya Shirou
If Demon Lord’s right hand man/strategist turned into a househusband isn’t one of the most shippy ideas then I don’t know what is. Fics are just writing themselves. I just love seeing utter domesticity and loyalty Sadao and Ashiya have (and trouble they have with their prodigal not-son Urushihara).
I would love to get some insight into their relationship before they had to escape into another world. Maybe Ashiya realizes he is actually happy with the current arrangement and feels shame over indulging himself, while his lord is working hard to earn money and regain their powers. For some more specific prompts, maybe instead of becoming househusband he ends up working in MgRonald’s alongside Sadao. Or maybe while he’s doing shopping he ends up winning a lottery organized by some local shops and receives tickets for an onsen visit for two, so he and Sadao go to have a much deserved break. Or alternatively a story where they don’t get a break and need to face some new enemy.
Maou Sadao/Sasaki Chiho
I love Chiho Sasaki. She’s one of my favourite renditions of a normal person accidentally becomes entangled into a supernatural plot I’ve seen. And amidst it all, I love how she keeps supporting Sadao, even after learning that her MgRonald’s senpai is in fact a demon lord from another world.
I would love to see more of them working together in MgRonald’s. Maybe a precanon story where Chiho is still learning her ropes at MgRonald’s, while Sadao is still not completely used to passing as a human, so he keeps accidentally mentioning things about his demonic past and then has to quickly amend them into something more human. Or maybe a “tragic” story of Chiho who instead of applying to MgRonald’s goes to Sentucky Fired Chicken (I don’t mind changing it so SFC opens earlier than in the canon). Even though Sadao works for the rival store Chiho still falls for him and his impeccable work ethic and so she keeps counting days until her contract ends so she can apply to MgRonald’s instead (bonus points if the Sariel’s plotline happens during that time and Chiho gets increasingly distreased that Sadao will hate her even if she successfully moves to MgRonald’s). Alternatively they both go on some sort of training or charity action for MgRonald’s employees. Or maybe a more fantastical adventure where a new threat appears, so Sadao and Chiho work together to neutralize it.
AUs and ships
I would prefer no setting changes for this story, because this shows premise is just way too good. I’m fine with any other AUs. One slight exception (since it’s a bit of borderline case between a setting and divergence AU) would be that I would love to see Sadao and Chiho working at a coffee shop chain instead of MgRonald's.
Please only focus on one pairing requested when writing. I’d rather not have a triangle situation and see either Ashiya or Chiho rejected (requested character feeling slight jealousy over Sadao getting along with someone else is fine, I just don’t want a full on rivalry). I’d also rather not see Sadao paired with anyone beside the requested characters.

Job Applications
Note: there is no note I'm just happy to see y'all
"Next" Himmler shouted, Whilheim felt butterflies fluttering in his stomach as he walked towards the door taking a deep breath readjusting his tie then opening the door.
"State your name please" Whilheim stared at the group of people who will be judging him today Karl Brandt personal physician to Hitler, Reinhard Heydrich Brigadior General and Heinrich Himmler's second in command at just 29, and lastly the man who called him in here Heinrich Himmler Hitler's right hand man and the second in command to the Third Reich.
"Whilheim Traugott Fischer"
"And why are you here today"
"I would like to join the Volkischer Beobatcher" Whilheim said, as sweat began to accumulate by his brow
"Oh don't be nervous Whilheim take a seat please" Heinrich replied, as Whilheim sat on the couch he mumbled a thank you as he sank into the couch cushion slowly.
"So you want to join the Volkischer Beobatcher what are your qualifications" Whilheim pondered
"I went to Freie Journalistenschule in Berlin, graduated with all honors, I have a PHD and a Doctorate in Feature-Writing, and my IQ score is 152" the men raised their eyebrows in amazement
"Anything else"
"Well I uh I am fluent in French and English." Whilheim let out a breath man he thought that wasn't that bad actually
"How physically flexible are you" Karl asked, Whilheim furrowed his eyebrows
"I don't understand"
"How physically flexible are you" he repeated
"I um don't know"
"Get up and touch your toes" he demanded, Whilheim stood up and bended down almost reaching his feet
"Pretty decent but we'll work on it" Karl said while writing something down
"Are you sexually active" Reinhard questioned
"No sir"
" Why not" Whilheim looked away while a blush began to form on his cheeks
"Oh no need to feel embarrassed" Heinrich assured
"Well I'm a virgin." At his words the men smirked at each other
"So you have never participated in any form of sexual activity" Reinhard said
"No sir"
"Intresting" and as Whilheim stood there confusion started to bubble in his mind because he did not understand what his physical physic or his sexual history had anything to do with the job his was applying for which was a journalist for the Volkischer Beobatcher.
"So Whilheim how well are you at gagging" Heinrich asked
"Excuse me"
"How powerful is your gag reflex" Whilheim bewildered by the question asked
"I'm sorry what does this have to do with writing articles" Reinhard surprised by his question glared at him
"It's just standard procedure to ask questions like these now can you just answer him" Whilheim embarrassed by his reprimand bit his lower lip as the blush from earlier returned
"I'm sorry sir and I dont know I've never done anything to test my gag reflex well I mean not purposefully." Karl wrote down what Whilheim will start to assume is what his answers are to the questions
"Ok good now my men and I will conduct a few experiments on you to see if you are fit to join the Volkischer and then we'll analyze the results understand" Heinrich said
"Yes sir"
"Good now we will began by asking you to take off your pants." Whilheim's heart skipped a beat at his command
"Huh"
"Take off your pants" Reinhard repeated anger evident in his voice, Whilheim hastily began to unbutton his pants soon plopping on the couch so he could kick them off
"So have you ever been interested in cross dressing" Whilheim jumped at Heinrich's question but not wanting further anger Reinhard held back any chance to convey an ounce of curiosity instead replying with a no. Karl wrote down what he said
"Now are you open to the idea of cross dressing" Whilheim hesitated to answer
"S..sure"
"Why the hesitation"
"I've never cross dressed before is it mandatory" again the men smirked at each other
"Well when ordered by your superiors to do so then yes it is mandatory" Karl said
"Oh then I guess I'm ok with it."
"Great now does the idea of sleeping with men repluse you" Whilheim not being able to contain his confusion accidentally mumbled What aggravating Reinhard enough to say
"Are you incompetent do you not understand the questions he's asking"
"No sir" Whilheim mumbled
"Then are you just choosing to be defiant" Whilheim took a deep breath before saying
"I don't think I'm being defiant." Looking up from his paperwork Karl had a shocked look on his face as well as Heinrich who was starring at Reinhard wondering what his next course of action will be
"Come here" Reinhard growled, Whilheim startled by his anger quickly walked up to him stopping right in front of him appreciating the fact that the only thing separating them was the table. As Reinhard stood up towering over Whilheim with his intimidating height he walked calmly towards him soon arriving right in front of him then bending down to his eye level he calmly said
"When your superiors ask you a question do you ever back talk them" As tears began to well in his eyes Whilheim quietly said
"No sir"
"Then what makes me or Heinrich any different." Whilheim didn't understand why was Reinhard mad he didn't do anything wrong all he had done was be confused by questions that weren't even related to the job he was applying for which was to be a journalist but he didn't enjoy being ridiculed so as a coping mechanism he looked away from Reinhard's stone cold glare soon begininng to bite his lower lip allowing tears to stream down. Reinhard grabbed Whilheim's face forcing him to look at him
"You look at me when I'm talking to you now answer my question what makes me-
"I'm sorry" Reinhard raised his eyebrow
"For what"
"I'm sorry if I was being defiant it's just I don't understand what any of these questions have to do with journalism" Reinhard starred at Whilheim smiling when realizing that he really doesn't understand that the job he's applying isn't just a simple old journalist job so in a serious tone he whispers
"Whilheim I want you to understand that right now you are applying for a job that won't just be about journalism and that you will also be working as a member of the Third Reich for the propaganda function. Now if you still want this job we can happily give it to you but you will have to follow orders without question and if classified business ever fall on unclassified ears I will find out and you will be shot is that understandable." Processing what he said Whilheim hiccuped
"Yes sir" satisfied with his answer Reinhard kissed his cheek and waiting for a response Reinhard wolfishly grinned when Whilheim didn't say anything
"Now let the real experiment began" he teased, soon tossing him over his shoulder Reinhard walked to the table roughly placing him down attempting to get a reaction out of him and feeling pleased when Whilheim didn't say or do anything. Whilheim finally understood the experiment they weren't testing his intelligence they were testing his tolerance seeing what he would put up with but sadly for him not understanding what atrocities lay ahead for him or the atrocities he would have to cover up in just a few newspapers Whilheim ignorantly accepted their test.
Soon he felt a flurry of hands exploring his body and not knowing who they belonged to he tried to look around only to be stopped by Reinhard who said
"I want you to try not to react because if you react then you will have failed this experiment understood" Whilheim shook his head yes
"Good boy." Reinhard kiss Whilheim and allowing his tongue to explore his mouth Whilheim remained stoic but then things started to get harder when he felt somebody put their lips on his neck leaving a trail of kisses down it and stopping by his collar bone to nibble at it then biting down real hard. Holding back a moan Whilheim felt the person on his collar smirk into his flesh.
Next he felt someone else on the otherside of his neck however starting in reverse near his collar bone up to the area between his neck and jawline but instead of nibbling or even kissing they let their lips trail up his neck and only then do they began to kiss his neck when they have finally reached their desired destination. Reinhard released his lips from Whilheim's as a line of spit fell from their lips then looking down at Whilheim's crotch he saw a bulge beginning to form so grinning at it he sunk down to his knees and began to stroke the clothed dick.
"Remember when you said you have never preformed any kind of sexual activity"
"Yes sir"
"Why is that"
"I was raised to believe that any kind of sexual activity is a form of sodomy unless preformed with your spouse" Whilheim could feel the people on his neck smirking as they stop kissing
"Well virgin boy you can forget about what you were taught as a child for now you belong to a new parent named Hitler and he will be your only driving force to do anything is that understandable" Reinhard spouted
"Yes sir"
"Good now take off your underwear." Whilheim peeled off his underwear shivering when his dick felt the cold tempatures in the room
"Good boy now spread your legs" right after spreading his legs the people on each side of him started to have a little fun of their own. Whilheim felt a hand began to take off his tie while another was grabbing at his coat soon Whilheim felt cold for the hands had taken off almost every piece of clothing he had leaving his shoes and socks.
"You look so cute" a voice whispered in his ear resulting in a blush to form on his face making the men chuckle as they said in unison
"Strike one" dang it Whilheim thought Reinhard started to blow on his dick chuckling when the blush worsened on Whilheim's face tracing the veins with his fingers he grinned when cum started to form on the tip. Whilheim felt pleasure but he didn't know where all he knew was that he didn't want to indulge in it so feeling Reinhard starting to stroke him he did a bold move and pushed him back with his foot closing his legs in the process. Reinhard glared at him getting up then stepped towards him and with each step he took Whilheim felt the pleasure in his body wither away and soon to replace it was dread, as Reinhard got close enough to breath in his face he seethed
"Strike two" then without warning Reinhard slapped him hard leaving a hand print on his cheek. Sinking on his knees again he calmly stated
"Open your legs" Whilheim remained stoic as well as defiant refusing to open his legs
"Open your legs" he growled, Whilheim continued to refuse the command, Reinhard remained eye contact with Whilheim while saying
"Open his legs for him please" giving him a crooked smile when the hands grabbed each knee and forcibly opened Whilheim's legs wider than before. Whilheim's mind began to feel flurry of emotions but the only emotions he could recognize was pleasure and shame, shame because he was allowing these men to defile him but for what a job that he could easily get somewhere else in another city or even country. However it was the pleasure that was making him allow these men to defile him in the first place, not understanding why he enjoyed to be touched in these places especially by men.
Then Whilheim finally understood because he had never indulge in sexual pleasures, being raised not to, so the feeling of just a simple stroke of his dick left him wanting more
"You know I think I would enjoy bending you over and fucking you on my desk" a voice whispered, as the hands trailed up from his leg to his stomach stopping at his nipple then pinching it, Whilheim continued to hold back a moan.
"I think I would enjoy that except he would be so much cuter in a dress don't you think so Whilheim" Whilheim afraid to answer remained silent
"Answer him Whilheim" Reinhard hissed
"Yes sir"
"Would you enjoy it if I added stockings"
"Yes sir"
"Good boy" Reinhard praised, beginning to stroke him again grinning when a large amount of pre cum started to drip down. Quickening his pace around his dick Whilheim felt the people on the side of him had begun to pleasure him in other places, a hand on each nipple twisting and pinching one going as far as to lower their head to even bite one. About to look down Whilheim saw a hand reach out a grab his face slamming their lips onto his and forcing their tongue in his mouth then seizing his hand guiding it to their dick Whilheim felt his hand being pushed down their underwear and onto to their dick.
"Stroke it" Reinhard demanded, as he began to stroke Whilheim held back a squeak when he felt a hand on his ass
"It's so plump" a voice whispered, soon giving it a squeeze
"I know the perfect dress to go with an ass like yours" as the kiss ended a line of spit dripping down from their lips Whilheim looked down not wanting to see who kissed him
"Look at me" they said, glancing up he saw Karl who was lazily smiling at him
"You are so adorable" he said, placing his hand on Whilheim's to make him stroke faster
"Fuck" he moaned
"Cum with me." At his statement Whilheim realized he was close for the knot in his stomach tightened and as it got tighter Whilheim knew no matter how many times he was told he just couldn't keep being silent for so long. At first he accidentally released little mewls but as his dick grew to be more sensitive with each stroke those mewls became moans and as tears begun to form in his eyes the only thought coursing through him mind was you failed.
Cumming into his hand Reinhard licked the cum surprised by the taste
"You taste sweet" he mumbled earning a blush from Whilheim who was trying to wipe off the cum on his hand with the table cloth, getting up Reinhard finished the rest of the cum smiling when there was no more
"How do you feel" Heinrich asked Whilheim
"Exhausted" Whilhiem breathed out
"Wonderful now that concludes the experiment and if you would as to so kindly get dress and leave my men and I will converse on your results and see if you are qualified to work at Volkischer Beobatcher." Whilheim got up takings his tie, shirt, and coat with him bending to grab his underwear soon being fully clothed again and as he walked towards the exit he could feel hungry eyes following his every move burning holes into his back.
(Bonus/Timeskip)
Whilheim was on his couch reading a novel when he heard a knock at the door
"WHO IS IT" he shouted
"Max Wunsche" Whilheim furrowed his eyebrows, I don't know any Max Wunsche, walking to the door he saw a man in a soldier's uniform holding a box
"May I come in" he asked however Whilheim didn't get the chance to answer for Max had pushed him aside and walked in anyway. Max sat on the couch placing the box on his lap then patting the cushion next to him as an indication for Whilheim to sit
"Oh um ok" Whilheim scuttled to Max plopping down as he reached for the box
"Hey what's in this box" but Max didn't say anything he just smirked and pulled a carton of cigarettes out of his breast pocket. Whilheim huffed as he struggled to open the box
"Give it here" Max demanded, pulling out a switch blade from his pocket and stabbing the box trailing a long line across the tape handing it back to Whilheim when he could see the contents inside
"A letter and a uniform" Whilheim questioned, as he opened the letter it said
"Dear Whilheim Traugott Fischer we are proud to say you are now a proud member of the Volkischer Beobatcher as well as a member of the Third Reich. In this box contains a typewriter, a SS uniform, and a camera we take pride in knowing someone as intelligent as you will be working with people like us. Stay true to the Fatherland and Heil Hitler." Whilheim beamed at the letter putting it down to inspect the camera and uniform, pulling out the listed contents he was surprised to find another item in the box so pulling it out he was shocked to find a maids uniform and stockings. Pulling the dress out a letter fell out one of the pockets and opening it up the letter said
"Also we would like to congratulate you on passing the experiment so as a reward here is the dress and stockings I promised you" as Whilheim was analyzing the outfit he felt breath on his neck jumping when Max whispered
"Put it on." Glancing at Max Whilheim got up as he headed toward the bathroom feeling Max pull his arm
"No I want you to put it on in here" looking back Whilheim felt heat rush to his cheeks as a wolfish grin began to grow on Max's face. So sitting on the arm rest Whilheim unbuttoned his pants then pullled his shirt off flinching when he felt Max rub his back. Kicking his socks and shoes off he slipped into the dress
"It's kind of tight"
"That's the point" reaching for the stockings Whilheim saw laced panties in the box so grabbing a pair disbelief written all over his face Max chuckled
"Yes you have to put those on as well" Whilheim grumbled as he put his stockings on next the panties. Standing up Whilheim didn't like how the end of the dress was hardly covering his ass so pulling it down Max slapped his hand
"Don't you'll crinkle the dress" however not believing what he said Whilheim resumed to pull the dress down resulting in him getting his ass slapped.
"When tell you something I expect you to do it Whilheim for I am your superior" while rubbing his ass Whilheim replied
"Yes sir"
"Good now come sit on my lap" walking towards him and sitting on his lap Whilheim felt a bulge hitting his thigh as Max was caressing his other thigh
"God they weren't kidding when they said you were adorable"
"Thank you" Whilheim mumbled a blush forming on his cheeks. As Max pushed him down on his back grabbing his legs and wrapping them around his waist he began to grind into Whilheim his lips finding his neck and while kissing his neck Whilheim asked
"What are you doing" making Max laughed
"I'm welcoming you to the Third Reich" soon his hands unzip his pants and pulled down his boxers as his harden dick twitched at the new found freedom. Then pulling Whilheim's panties aside exposing his hole Max aligned his dick to the taint next thrusting into roughly while saying
"Welcome to the Third Reich whore."

aww, this was short...
...but at least it was also fun! Basically, things happen as they should, Reuenthal defends himself from Schönkopf with only a sword this time, and gets complemented on his hand-to-hand fighting skills. But naturally he’s overwhelmed by Schönkopf who is in full armor and, in this particular version of the story, is wielding two battle axes. Two. Battle. Axes.
So Roi whips out his gun, takes aim... Schönkopf is like “dude, you can’t use that, the ship is full of Zephyr particles, you’ll blow us all up!” But Reuenthal tells Schönkopf that he’d rather die by his own hands than being mauled to death by the FPA’s stray dogs.
Tumblr media
Schönkopf goes “wtf man?! you’d drag your own men into death with you?!” Reuenthal is basically like “oh, I know how you are... if you’re going down with us their death won’t be in vain!” And he’s serious, wow. He even goes “farewell Mittermeier, take care of Count Lohengramm” and it’s like argh Fujisaki you’re doing it again with the foreshadowings! But anyway, the crisis is averted when Bergengrün storms in and defends his boss, because he ain’t gonna lose a commander again, dammit.
Tumblr media
The tide of the battle is turning so Schönkopf decides to gtfo, while Reuenthal composes himself and actually thanks Bergengrün, aww.
So yeah, I wondered for a bit what to make of Reuenthal’s actions here - at first they seem a bit strange for him, but then, he’s supposed to be uncharacteristically hot-headed in this moment. Also, I guess it fits his self-destructive nature, as does the fact that he wouldn’t care about taking his men with him. I mean, that’s pretty much what he ends up doing, anyway, further down the road.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile... Hilda officially gets her uniform.
Tumblr media
And Mittermeier and Müller’s forces welcome Reinhard on Phezzan.
Tumblr media
Also, Rupert  dies, and no-one cares.

"I don’t believe that absolute truth is necessary. I only need the power to freely accomplish my dreams. One could say that it’s the power not to have to take orders from those one despises.” -  Reinhard von Lohengramm (Legend of the Galactic Heroes)
@marudny-robot! I did a thing based on the thing you sent me!
This reads, in Angkorian Era Khmer (both language and script):
“Vvaṃ git ʔañ vnyat niṣkala ʔaṃpacc. Paṅ guḥ kanlāṅ noḥ ta svapna paṃbañ jraḥ. Gi neḥ kanlāṅ vvaṃ diḥ ti cap śāsana nai ta ʔavajña ti noḥ ʔnak.”
Under the cut is an explanation and introduction to reading Khmer from the 700-1100s:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These two images show the consonants and vowels of Angkorian Khmer.
The purple form is for the sound that starts a syllable (but see ⁵). Purple vowels are used for syllables that have no starting consonant sound (other then a brief pause like in the middle of ‘uh-oh’ which is shown by the ‘ʔ’ symbol.
Blue consonants are used used as additional parts of consonants. They’re placed below the initial consonant. Up to 2 consonants can be added below, but usually it’s only 1.
All consonants include a following ‘a’ sound. Blue vowels are used in syllables that have different vowels, instead. I’ve shown them on a ‘ka’ character, so you can see how they attach. Note that the first ‘ka’ has no vowel attached.
Vowels with a line above (‘ā’) are long. That means that you make the song for longer before moving to the next syllable. Khmer rarely marks the difference between short and long vowels, other than ‘ā’. ( ‘ū’ is used, but seems to be treated as a variant of its short counterpart, not a separate sound.)
‘kaṃ’ and ‘kaḥ’ are special characters from Sanskrit. In Sanskrit, the ‘aṃ’ character means that the vowel comes from the mouth AND nose (its ‘nasal’). Khmer didn’t mark nasal vowels, so the the symbol is used for ‘m’s that end syllables. Not sure what the ‘aḥ’ marks.
The ‘k-’ is used for consonants that aren’t followed by a vowel. Consonant sounds that follow a vowel are usually used as the first character of the next syllable, even if they’re pronounced as part of the earlier syllable. If a consonant sound marks the end of a sentence, or the following syllable already starts with a consonant cluster, the consonant will be written with a line over it, instead.
Tumblr media
Khmer reads from inside to out. You start with the base consonant, then read down through secondary consonants. All vowels withing a consonant cluster are lost. Then you read the vowel, and finally, any special characters. The above image shows three examples, each slightly more complex than the last.
Breaking the text into words requires understanding of the language - there are no spaces between words, and they frequently end in the middle of consonant clusters.
Footnotes:
¹only used to write Sanskrit, not native Khmer.
²only found in grammars, not used in actual writing.⁶
³appearance of these characters are my best guess based on 1-2 very blurry images and comparisons to related scripts.
⁴ appearance of these characters are my best guess based on comparisons to related scripts, since I couldn’t find any examples
⁵black symbol is a special form of ‘r’ when its the first character of a consonant cluster.
⁶‘ḹ’ is also included in grammars for related scripts. Both ‘ḹ’ and ‘ṝ’ were created by Sanskrit grammarians to make their charts have a pretty, balanced appearance. Given that the only use for ‘ḷ’ in Khmer that I’ve found is as a rare variant of the word ‘li,’ and I’d run out of room, I didn’t bother including including my guess for the imaginary long version of the character.

In one of your tags you say you have a bsd x Re zero au???? Details please???
Uh, yes, I have one! It’s actually one of my favorite series and at the moment I’m reading the second light novel ^^ ♥
The idea is quite old already, last year early November and not fully worked out :c
Tho- I know the Return by Death ability would be pretty cool in that AU, too, I focused myself more on the original Felt&Reinhard relationship because they’re my personal favorites and I would enjoy having them more explored.
I hope this makes you still interested in it, tho!
In the crossover, I put Chuuya into the shoes of Felt, being homeless and trying the best to somehow get out of the slums. Of course, his situation is shitty but he isn’t willing to give up and will find a way to make enough money to ensure himself a good life. His only friend and the person he trusts and lives with is Hirotsu (Rom)
Dazai, on the other hand, is a handsome and skilled knight of the Kingdom and known among the commoners.
I'm not sure who I would put as Iris, tbh but after all the shit goes down with her, Dazai takes Chuuya with him because the badge that identifies you as a royal candidate, reacts to him.
So they live together the month until the Kings Election. (Insert a lot of bickering here)
At the election, I can see Chuuya so well with the same speech as Felt held:
"If I became the new ruler, I'll destroy everything! I'll bring down every last one of you, and bring a little fresh air into this country!"
With Dazai in the background, smiling.
Then Chuuya asks if this was according to his plan and Dazai just smiles more. "No, it's even better."
So, I don't know what's actually up with Felt being a royal candidate but I guess, she has royal blood and that idea is what I use for that AU. Chuuya has royal blood and is the crown prince of the Kingdom. Dazai knows that some shit is going on and he wants the kingdom how it is right now, bring down and Chuuya is the best help to do so.
Chuuya: I fucking let you work to death as my knight!Dazai: Well, well, that's good except for the working part.
I'm not sure about the rest of the cast. I guess that's personal taste on what you want to have as relationships, both platonic and romantic.

@mcphistcples "You are a fine hunter as I have heard in the tales of yore. However, that alone is not enough." UNPROMPTED (but fashionably late)
Tumblr media
“...Huh? What’sat supposed to mean, blondie?” Gah, this guy was so cool! But he was so annoyingly arrogant!? JUST LIKE ZEUS! ..Oh well. Reinhard was actually bearable, so it’s ultimately just a passing feeling throughout...but, he’d never get used to the fact that Rein and God of the Sky were so alike in terms of their looks.
Still, the Archer scratches his head to process Reinhard’s words. It’s not like the guy was wrong or anything, hunting with Orion’s expertise was a great feat on its own to surpass the likes of even Heracles, but it could only take people so far no matter who you were. When coming to that conclusion, he finds himself laughing a bit; smile in tow.
Tumblr media
“Well, yeah. That’s pretty obvious, ain’t it? That’s why I’ve got these!” He refers to his fists, which are now clenched. “’Sides, I’ve got pretty reliable allies here! You’re pretty scary powerful, aren’t you? As long as ‘ya got my back, I’ve got yours scary dude! Don’t let me down, when you fight with me, show me that power that supposedly rivals the Gods themselves!”

Book 9 thoughts (spoilers ahoy, avert thine eyes)
I’m procrastinating, so here’s a couple of things I liked from book nine.  All quotes are from the English translation.
Things slow down in the Alliance narrative since our lovely tea-sipping deuteragonist got unjustly taken away in the last book, but there were some nice moments.  Them putting back the pieces together and looking to the future and all that jazz.  Maybe it’s not thrilling like large-scale space battles or political intrigue, but it’s nice in its own subtle way.  Julian takes up Yang’s role of philosophical musing, of course.  The boy needs to give himself credit, though.  However, compared to the sheer flaming tire-fire of the empire’s melodrama, it just didn’t capture my interest as keenly.  I enjoyed Poplin ducking away as soon as Murai returned to visit, a nice constant in a changed enterprise.
And of course Reuentahl’s rebellion was messy, complicated, and tragic, like the man himself.   The one solace from the whole thing was Trunicht’s death:
“He was still smiling when the hole opened in his chest.  It was only when the agony seized control of his entire nervous system and the blood that gushed forth discolored his tailored suit that his expression changed.  Not to a look of fear, or pain.  Rather, it was more a look of rebuke, as if to criticize a man who had been irrational enough to harm him in defiance of his judgement and calculations [can u not].”
There’s a page on why Hilda and Reinhard are basically those Pandas at the zoo that never bang. They are creatures made of pure work ethic and no sexual instinct whatsoever. It took a boatload of wine and an assassination attempt in order to make an heir to the Lohengramm dynasty, and that’s great.
It also goes into how Reinhard’s struggle against the Kaiser was really a child’s struggle against his father.  And I can’t get the image of Reinhard yelling at old Friedrich “FUCK YOU, YOU’RE NOT MY REAL DAD”. Like his whole rise to power was his version of teenage rebellion.  It kind of borders on...Oedipal, but that’s neither here nor there.
And then there’s a nice section about Annerose.  I’ve seen a couple of interpretations of varying sorts concerning her actions after the events at the end of book II, so it was kind of surprising to see it actually spelled out. (In the form of historical criticism, as is the style of the book; he emphasizes that female historians were the harshest, uh oh).  But then there’s this clap-back to her critics, and I couldn’t help but smile:
“In the end, we cannot avoid the conclusion that they [female historians] view [Annerose’s] actions through the lens of motherhood and its abandonment.  Would they be satisfied if the archduchess had continued to cling to her brother’s side into his twenties, indulge and spoil him, meddle in politics, and undermine his psychological independence? Of course the same authors would doubtless claim that to be robbed of one’s virginity by a tyrant at the age of fifteen, and then imprisoned for the next ten years, is not enough to make Annerose herself a sacrificial victim.”
My boi Lang is as he ever was: a petty, oleaginous scumbag possessed by delusions of grandeur.  The baby-faces description appears again and warms the cockles of my heart. But he beats both Reinhard and Reuentahl in net contributions to the genepool, and being a good father.  And being a dog dad doesn’t count, Oberstein. (SMH, it’s like the top brass in the Lohengramm dynasty are following the millennial playbook).  I like to think that his descendants will scatter far and wide in the empire. And one day, a young baby-faced and portly youth, Langhard,  will begin his meteoric rise to power, after his equally baby-faced and portly sister, Langerose, is stolen away by the decadent kaiser, Rudolf von Lohengramm the XIIth. It’s only fair.
As for the bookly Oberstein Report:
He’s himself, as usual.  Maybe even more relaxed, I found I only called him an “asshole” a couple of times.  Maybe it’s because he wasn’t making too many appearances.  I imagine once book 10 rolls around, I will have ample opportunity to correct this discrepancy.
At this point, the feeling in the empire is low-key they know Oberstein’s been doing shady shit, but they just ignore it.  It’s great, like they’ve resigned themselves to his scheming, both real and imagined.  I interpret this reputation as something that Oberstein did little to dissuade, as it ends up working as an effective smokescreen for the actual shady shit.  And admirals catch themselves second-guessing all their actions without Oberstein actually having lift a finger to keep them in line.
Oberstein barely gets his hands dirty in this book, not that he wasn’t prepared to do it.  The book does have a line about historians accusing him of “burying his counterpart without bloodying his hands” that pretty much lines up on my interpretation of the whole debacle.  And then there’s this:
“ ‘...but listen to me,’ he added with a wry smile that astonished Ferner, ‘How talkative I have become.’ “ This is, coincidentally, the exact way to spell out the sound of hell freezing over.

🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻
i almost cant even count how many this is but im doing every single one anyways and you cant stop me despite the fact that this obviously took me ages to actually answer
1: if ur reading this ur legally obligated to follow max (sender of this ask) Right Now. Just Do It.
2: i think more ppl with my sense of humor should watch Spider Riders bc listen..  if somewhere along the line that show suddenly gained more popularity again in this fine year of 2019 id be both actually funny for once but also revolutionary. by all technicalities some of my hcs are fucking great but i dont think i could say a lot of them and even be comprehensible outside of orientation based ones that are just rlly controversial. granted im not even sure i could or would actually recommend the show to people cause its kinda dumb a lot of the time and also fairly long at least to my standards so its harder to finish unless ur like really invested in it :pensive:
3: also on that note the next time a horny person even THINKS about Corona im Going to break into their home and then break their knees. i hate that she has so much fanart thats basically just fetish art or otherwise managing to be nsfw in some way shes like 15 at best fuck off!! its rlly only a problem on like. deviantart but it still makes me die inside.
4: character development is hard i never actually keep my ideas and what i have written down on like.  my actual bios for everyone on the same pace so its a confusing mess and i wish i was better at combating that
5: anon and kanon r such good loids i wish people used them more but i think a part of the problem is that i dont always look That hard for things that use them ahdbsadgashdj
6: alex is the best sdv bachelor and im not accepting criticism on that notion. 2nd best would probably be like..  sam except i havent tried hard enough to be friends with him yet which i feel bad abt bc he seems nice
7: i miss the cracking open a cold one with the boys meme that was still one of my favorites
8: (goes BACK to thinking about SR shdfjds) the anime had no right having like so many characters base their ideals off of how brade used to be in the past and all those good takes on like not necessarily Having to resort to violence as the ultimate solution and all that good stuff just to be like, “surprise!! he actually IS still around! but also he’s going to be minimally helpful at all until the last few episodes and otherwise we’re going to make a ton of gags about him trying to hit on the like 2 girls in the team who are also like 15 while he ignores practically everyone else because thats funny!” im still so mad about it. he is the absolute worst and he has no rights. there was also so much potential they seemed like they could have used and were trying to hint at using in terms of further developing more important details about the history of the inner world or at least some of the things that had been going on well before hunter ever showed up and then they didn’t do anything but hint at the idea of brade having known hunter’s grandfather. but even that wasn’t 100% confirmed bc they dodged around it the one time they had hunter ask. its a mess.
9: my taste is so fucking weird and i hate it bc its mostly just, “oh yeah i heard abt this thing and it seems cool im hoping to start getting into it soon!” for most things that are actually cool or popular or all that and never actually get into it, but then i see smth dumb as shit that i know would probably make me look like an absolute fool for liking and im like, “oh yeah yknow what i can do this one” and then i do like it but i cant say much about it either cause i dont wanna look like.   a fool.
10: these have been depressing as fuck so im gonna lighten the mood and say that himbo is a fucking hilarious word and i love it
11: also axel (kh) is a himbo. why? he just is.
12: im also bad at character design i think bc i always worry that my characters look too similar in terms of hair style like all the time and idk if its rlly that bad or not jfhgkf.  that and like. so many of my characters just wear jeans and boots in terms of the lower half of their body its so unoriginal but it always works so well…
13: still disappointed in myself for having never 100%’d even 1 tlodw game. lunatic mode.. Difficult
14: i dont keep up with ace attorney fans but i hope everyone out there agrees that miles has peak vampire energies based on the way he dresses alone
15: re:zero fans have no rights only bc i only ever see ppl talking abt rem and ram like. wh..   was no one ever going to tell me about reinhard or was i just supposed to watch him get introduced in the first few eps and then fall in love w/him immediately before even finding out hes supposed to be a knight which makes him 20x better
16: leon and/or leonhart is like genuinely a good name idk why it just sounds rlly nice
17: ive had like so many technical difficulties with this site since trying to answer this i hate tumblr
18: im pretty sure im like. genuinely just gonna go mute or some shit one day cause honestly ive mostly only ever gotten worse and worse about not actually being able to say things even when i know exactly what thought im trying to say, both physically and like. online. its so weird i feel like i just cant say things. it may just be being self conscious but i restrict myself soo heavily and its WEIRD….  its like being trapped in ur thoughts and it sucks.  probably doesnt even actually mean all that much but it still makes it hard for me to accomplish anything ever which i hate.
19: despite all the titles like ssbu and all that existing for the switch i think id only want one to play the new(er) inside system games i havent had the chance to yet like the spinoff card game and rudymical and also brave dungeon but w/neville and klinsy and whoever else was dlc on that game cause obviously i own the 3ds port but also neville..  good…  i wanna see how she plays..
20: i miss when i could be passionate abt cave story it just makes me feel tired seeing it sometimes at this point but it also still holds a great significance to me so its just confusing and im not sure how i feel abt it
21: the SR novels were cowards only on account of not giving us any official design for petra but also for writing igneous like.  That.  novelverse igneous is just too bitter in general and like i get it but they couldve done a lot more with him even though he is still somewhat respectable in the end, granted its hard cause like holy shit hes so fucking mean to hunter literally who asked for that. im just glad the anime let him be somewhat more idk..  i guess sociable while still keeping a lot of the inherently essential aspects his personality had like his almost over the top loyalty to the prince and taking things like training/combat in general very seriously. its just good and animeverse igneous is so good id die for him thanks for coming to my tedtalk

ooh ooh. can you dvd commentary "the wine we fought for" from "Are you a masochist, Schonkopf?" to "Schonkopf felt a fleeting moment of pity for that one other person, whose life and honor the firebombing must have saved"?
MY PLEASURE, THANKS. sorry this is super long because you picked a fresh ‘un.
“Are you a masochist, Schonkopf?” he said.
“Who, me?”
I obviously love Yang and Schonkopf’s stupid conversations in-show for a lot of reasons, but one is that Yang is a little less sure of his footing around Schonkopf than e.g. academy friends (and has reason to be!), so he puts more effort into actively turning the tables when he’s uncomfortable. He also spends less time playing dumb, I think because he finds Schonkopf’s incitement-to-revolt genuinely worrying and doesn’t want to give it any quarter—Schonkopf seems willing to take anything less than a flat denial as encouragement, so this makes some sense. Actually, Schonkopf might take encouragement from a flat denial, which is presumably why Yang always hears him out first, to make a point out of “it’s not that I don’t trust you enough to share my secret ambitions, it’s that I trust you and I DON’T HAVE SECRET AMBITIONS.” I also like that Yang’s efforts to wrongfoot him often work, at least a little, although he’s a recovery artist. But his recoveries involve digging himself deeper in/showing more of his hand, as far as personal investment is concerned.
“Well, take this. I can’t imagine you’d enjoy seeing me paired off. It would offend your sense of justice—and rightly so. How can a man like me go courting?” With his free hand he drew a line across his neck. For the guillotine? “As for your other demands… If I seized control of the government, your life would become very boring. Subduing the populace, night raids—for a man of your talents, it’s a snore. We’d never go to war again. And yet you go on asking me to take up the mantle of power.”
I do think Yang kind of equates “Schonkopf urging dictatorship upon me” and “Schonkopf meddling in my love life.” Which is interesting, because… in some ways the show wants to set up the desire for a happy private life and the pressure to seize power (and protect himself) as opposing drives in Yang’s life, but obviously for Yang himself they both represent an unconscionable turn toward self-interest—toward self-interest and away from his obligation to, uh, all the people he’s blown up. I don’t know that Vermilion is really about Overcoming The Guilt so much as it is discovering a little humility; in targeting Reinhard and proposing to Frederica he’s slightly overriding the control freak instinct that says “you hold the ultimate power here and will fuck everything up personally.” But it’s charming to me when people are like “??? why doesn’t Yang ignore the order for the sake of the greater good,” when it’s made pretty explicit that if Yang were following his idea of a straight consequentialist agenda, he wouldn’t fight Reinhard at all…….. Well, and there’s more to it than that, because part of Yang’s brand of consequentialism is trying to force himself out of the headspace that believes perfectly informed decisions can ever be made by fumbling individuals. Still.
That said, I feel “your job would suck under the Yang Regime” is a pretty compelling argument and one Schonkopf should lend further consideration
“You’ve confused me with yourself,” Schonkopf said, after a pause. “A man so afraid of being bored, he closes his eyes to everything that might disappoint him.”
Yang blinked. But Schonkopf had warmed to his subject. “Now, me—though it might involve some personal sacrifice, I would find matters to interest me in your dictatorship. And if you were in love… ‘Yang Wen-li, laid low by passion!’ I admit, you’re not a natural. Is there any part you’re a natural for? But as we’ve discussed—you’re not a bad student.”
The most unrealistic part of this fic is the idea that this would in any way strike Yang as an odd or unprofessional thing for Schonkopf to say. But as I discovered while editing this scene, there’s actually no line weird enough that it DOES make sense as a trigger for Yang’s realization. I made the sort of boring decision while writing that… characterization-wise I am okay with Yang moving things along here, on the basis that Yang is interested in letting off some steam and has entered into that kind of self-soothing mindset he’ll increasingly show on the road to Vermilion. And I think if Yang were going to choose any time to hit on Schonkopf, or better yet blindside Schonkopf by arbitrarily declaring Schonkopf to have hit on him, it would certainly be as part of a high-level deflection away from one (1) question he doesn’t want to answer about Frederica and/or himself as a person who experiences positive desire. In this case actually it wasn’t a question, it was just Schonkopf suggesting he reach out to a grieving friend. Yang: What? No!!
Yang is also kind of the Aslan of LOGH in that whenever a person comes to him about a third party’s possible crush on him, he’s like, “no, I’m going to tell you about your crush now. no one is told any incriminating details but their own.”
He leaned forward; and for once, Yang didn’t shrink away. Emboldened, Schonkopf wiggled his fingers in Yang’s face, invoking the spirit of a fairy godmother over a pumpkin. Yang moved his head to one side and squinted. “Are you making a pass at me?”
With the body language I did want to convey that Schonkopf has overshot his normal careful boundary-testing, partly because he’s feeling “vulnerable” about the one-sidedness of his investment—that’s part of what him ordering the autopsy under his own authority and then feeling weird about it is supposed to set up, though I don’t know if it works.
It was natural to lower his hand. It was natural to smile pedantically, as if letting himself in on the joke.
I’m happy with this line because for me it immediately evokes OVA Schonkopf’s whole face situation.
“I can’t say I’d thought of it. But for you, Admiral, I would make an exception…”
One question that it might be reasonable to address, now that I’ve gotten into it about all these… characterization considerations, for a very short and unimpassioned relationship upgrade scene… is why I didn’t just have Schonkopf initiate. And the answer is, because Schonkopf is a cowardly opportunist! Of sorts. I mean, he’s not Yang-level, but we see with Katerose how unwilling he is to go out of his way to do anything that might involve inconvenience for him, and I don’t think he’s so attracted to Yang he’d consider it worth the risk. Maybe. I mean, in general he’s not the sort of person who “risks” things for sex. It depends how you picture both FPA culture and the culture within the military, but I think especially in the first half of the show Schonkopf doesn’t seem confident enough about where to place Yang in any of that, even just as an “unsoldierly” person with all these performative civilian aspirations, that he’d put himself out there without some sign of interest from Yang. I think also with both Yang and Frederica he has this pre-emptive sour grapes thing of like, I don’t have a chance so I’m going to sublimate all my energy into weird interrogations of their joint ward, which Julian calls him out on in the one target practice scene, lol.
“No, really.” Schonkopf eased his weight off the desk and raised an eyebrow, a half a beat too late. Yang was practically glowing. His eyes had popped open. Disgusted, Schonkopf understood that he was ignoring any implications: he had the silly, brazen look he got when alone with an ideal puzzle. “I thought you were sour Frederica turned you down,” Yang stage-whispered, putting his hand flat on the desk in a covert slap of triumph. “I was too narrowminded. General, if you have a complaint—”
Yang is so dumb lol. None of the above commentary is meant to imply that this isn’t a genuine lightbulb moment for him, at least on a conscious level. Yang: “huh, this hot guy is constantly up in my business, I guess I can leverage his curiosity as loyalty” —> “ohhhhh he cares about me as a PERSON i can use him for SEX”
He paused. I should have timed it, Schonkopf thought, and folded his arms.
“How curious,” said Yang, leaning back. “I seem to have lost my head. I apologize if I said something in bad taste. It was a joke. Uh, a test?”
I wrote a less halfassed version of this and then had to ask myself whether Yang would put any effort whatsoever into offering someone ELSE a graceful exit.
Schonkopf shook his head. His arms stayed crossed. Yang stared up at him, and stifled a yawn. When the silence had gone on another moment, he appeared to sag. “This is difficult. Usually, the other person makes a move, and we’re interrupted by a firebombing,” he offered. “Well, I say usually. It’s only happened the once…”
“How would you know?” Schonkopf said, kissing him.
He felt Yang tense. The change was harsh. But, equally quickly, he relaxed, and even moved with the kiss. His hands settled on Schonkopf’s shoulders. Schonkopf felt a fleeting moment of pity for that one other person, whose life and honor the firebombing must have saved.
Anyway, my favorite thing about writing this scene was just that Schonkopf doesn’t know who Jessica Edwards is. Could Yang pull this line on Frederica? He could not! But Schonkopf, while a stalker, isn’t one of those weird stalkers who knows your dead friends’ names. Here, that puts him at a disadvantage.
“life and honor” — I like this bit because, although it’s just a joke, I enjoyed making Schonkopf be wrong in this fic, in general, as a dramatic irony thing but also because I like when characters are wryly, ruefully, or resignedly wrong. Like, they put some thought into this! Still wrong. And often the way in which they are wrong shows a real lack of imagination about how many different things can fail terribly—sure, getting emotionally involved with Yang is a bad idea and about to become a much worse one, but disengaging didn’t save Jessica. Yang is not the be-all and end-all of horrors awaiting anyone in LOGH universe, and it’s important that Schonkopf can’t see beyond that for even a second.

Binge-Watching: Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Episodes 8-10
In which the tides of history sweep even the greatest monuments away, Reinhard picks up a dangerous new ally, and Jessica steps up to speak for peace.
The Tides of Time
The biggest obstacle between me and Legend of the Galactic Heroes is its presentation. It’s a very dry, very formal, very aesthetically paired-down experience, communicating its story more like an actual history textbook than an ongoing propulsive narrative at times. I don’t begrudge the show for committing to that style, it’s just not a style that suits my personal tastes on most occasions. That said, as time’s gone on, I’m finding myself surprisingly captivated by how LOTGH uses this style to tell its story. It basically allows the show to drop us straight into the thick of the conflict, getting us acquainted with all the important people and players while it fleshes out the history behind them. There’s a lot of important worldbuilding and lore that’s necessary to understand the political maneuvering, and it would be so easy to get bogged down in detail-mongering that the story screeches to a halt to explain itself every two minutes. By frontloading all the most important history into brief exposition dumps at the beginning of each episode, it lets us drop into the narrative in media res and flesh out the more nuanced details as we go. In such a complicated sociopolitical setting, getting the broad strokes in this way helps us get up to speed with the greater forces driving the characters and their ideals as efficiently as possible so it doesn’t have to waste any more time than necessary. We get a brief backstory about the infighting in the Kaiser’s family at the start of episode 9, and that allows us to instantly introduce a plot centered around warring noble houses who’s motivations stem from that infighting to flesh out the specifics of how that infighting has affected the Empire’s political climate. It starts broad and historical to set the scene, and then it gets specific and personal to make the audience care about that history as part of the story and not just words on a textbook page. It’s some pretty smart stuff.
It also helps that Legend of the Galactic Heroes is so keenly aware of history as an active force in and of itself. The Empire is a nation basically run on the glorification of history. The first Kaiser’s bloodline still runs the country to this day, and the political machine is centered around glorifying his name and legacy. Elaborate paintings and statues, grand celebrations, favor curried with the ruling dynasty... every aspect of the Empire is based on venerating and upholding its glorious history. It’s almost portrayed as something divine and miraculous, like Rudolph was a man descended from heaven who brought this country into being by word of god. But Reinhard, as always, is quick to cut to the truth of the matter; Rudolph was just a particularly smart man who successfully rode the currents of his time to political triumph. Which, of course, means there’s no reason Reinhard can’t do the same, a statement that’s both hilariously arrogant and perfectly clear-sighted. Never change, you glorious bastard. But more importantly, there is nothing eternal or divine or everlasting about this grand empire. It’s not even 500 years old yet! And as even the current Kaiser recognizes, there’s nothing really stopping this empire from going the way of all the empires of the past. Paintings burn into ash, great monuments crumble and fall, and even the most favored houses will pass into obscurity, never to be remembered. In time, history wipes the slate clean, and what seemed so eternal reveals itself to be just another transient moment in the clock’s inevitable march. And all that honor that seemed to matter so much becomes as worthless as dried leaves blowing listlessly in the wind.
A Snake in the Hand
In other words, if you want to change the world, you need to do more than cheaply venerate history. Being so obsessed with honor that you can’t see reality is the source of basically all the Empire’s sins. You must plan and prepare for a new, better history so it can last as long as it possibly can. And to that end, Reinhard’s just picked up a new, potentially dangerous ally. Oberstein isn’t exactly the most trustworthy of individuals, but he’s got good reason to consider Reinhard an ally. They’re both fighting to change the corrupt status quo and take down the nobles that have bled the country dry, only Oberstein is far more radical in his ultimate ends. He’s well aware that his disability would mark him for death in this country’s past, and he’s willing to tear down the entire system and rebuild it to ensure nothing like that can ever come to pass. And while Reinhard doesn’t fully trust him, he’s more than willing to make an ally of that passion. Oberstein’s smart, calculating, not afraid to speak his mind or flee a situation he has no chance of winning. As a military officer, that pragmatism makes him the Empire’s worst enemy, but as a warrior willing to get his hands dirty for the sake of a better world? Reinhard couldn’t ask for a better devil on his shoulder. Hopefully, he’ll prove a good balance to Sieg’s more optimistic angel and they can steer Reinhard’s course together.
Fight the Power
Back on the other side of the galaxy, Yang continues to be Extremely Relatable in his disgust toward his country’s warmongering. And listen, I know the original books this OVA is based on were written like four decades ago, but the way it portrays the Alliance’s failures as a democracy are still chillingly relevant today. Politicians dragging out war orphans for pro-war propaganda, the military being used as a trap to ensnare poor people with nowhere else to go and saddle them with an inescapable responsibility to fight and die, warmongering zealots paying lip service to the idea of bipartisan discourse while pushing the idea that everyone pushing for peace is either a coward or traitor... you could literally just set the Alliance side of the story in contemporary America and you’d barely have to change anything beyond the level of technology at play. We really haven’t progressed much as a nation since the 1980s, if commentary on our nation’s faults from back then is still so applicable today. And Yang, sadly, doesn’t have the option of shrinking away from it now that he’s the hero on everyone’s mind. He’s essentially forced to be the public face of the pro-war movement, and all he can do is keep his mouth shut and take it or else risk turning the entire government against him and all the people he cares about. And it’s clear from the occasional spikes of venom in his voice just how much this pisses him off (On the garish election posters littered everywhere: “These things spoil the city’s look.”) If he were allowed to speak his mind, he’d probably be one of the most fervent pro-peace voices on either side of the conflict. But since his position has muzzled him, someone else has to step up and take up that mantle.
Thank god, then, that Jessica’s found her way back into the story. This show needs more female energy overall, and turning her into a pro-peace politician is a great way to continue her character’s journey while expanding the scope of the show’s commentary. Jessica is fully committed to ending this war, and now she’s in a position where she has at least some level of power and influence to make that happen. But how will she fare against a jaded, broken political system packed with too many hawks and not enough doves? Will her lone voice be enough to overcome an entrenched reliance on war as a political tool, especially as a woman in an occupation dominated by often sexist older men? Will she find any allies among this den of wolves? Will she have to suffer through alone? Will she be able to make any progress against such difficult circumstances? Will she hold onto her beliefs? Lose all hope? Be consumed by the machine and turn into the enemy she was trying to fight? There’s no telling where her story will lead, but I’m very eager to see where her fight takes her. Just maybe cut back on the unnecessary, chemistry-less romance with Yang. This show’s doing plenty of stuff right without shoehorning in romantic subplots where they don’t belong.
Odds and Ends
-”Rudolph, who held both position of prime minister and head of state-” Well, hello, Third Reich parallels.
-Also, wow, we’re over a full millennium into the future. That’s nuts.
-Well, at least the nobles are willing to take the fall too. Props for that.
-Yeah, Reinhard’s playing the long game. Curry favor with the royals now, plan to take their spots later.
-”Who do they think people are? They steal, they trample, and then it’s their privilege to be forgiven?” Righteous anger is a good look on you, boo.
-”If it must be destroyed, then let it die in as much splendor as possible.” Oh, I think I like this guy.
-”But sometimes when I’m barked at by ill-bred dogs, I must kick back for the dog’s sake.” ksdjfhskjdfhdsf holy shit Reinhard no mercy
-Giving us the ticking clock of 7 PM was a great idea. Hitchcock’s theory of suspense and tension almost to the letter.
-”Yes, it’s your fault. So treat me to coffee tomorrow morning.” Oh, they fuckin.
-”Shall we drink to my good luck?” Lol, a bomb’s just gone off and he’s already rolling with it. What a G.
-”Adults can be really slovenly, huh? Well, see you!” Smooth, Julian. Smooth.
-”Please, just let me cry.” Alright, dopey romantic subplot aside, this is a good moment. Jessica’s got a lot on her shoulders.
