FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 (2011)

It always breaks my heart how Noel literally knows nothing. This guy comes from a place where there is nothing but misery. He literally says to Snow when he asks him where he comes from: "A place that doesn't have much in the way of fun or civilization."

but at the same time, I can't control myself not to laugh every time he sees/hears something new for him and he’s just like: woahhhh ☉_☉

and all I can think about is seeing Noel go to the theme park with Serah, Snow and Hope and they’ll all be excited to make him try all the rides.

serah and snow split a cat-themed earring+necklace set (in addition to the engagement necklaces)

Away - Final Fantasy XVI OST (This is considered as Joshua's "Theme" in the game, and I just love this song so damn much! The entire soundtrack is amazing, but this one will always feel a bit more special to me because it's his song haha :3)

I See Fire - Ed Sheeran (Well, Joshua is the Dominant of the Phoenix so of course this song resonates with him! I feel like it can be a lot related to the events of the Night of Flames, but also to the way the Phoenix is considered by the people in general and especially by the people of Rosaria.)

it's time to go - Taylor Swift (This is pretty much how I see Joshua's relationship to the Undying. At first he was grateful, but the more he saw the real world during his journey, the more he realizes they messed him up in some ways, so he's distancing himself for them.)

Million Years Ago - Adele (This song can be related to Joshua in a way that his duties were thrown to his face very early in his life, and it never stopped until he reunited with Clive. He's nostalgic about these moments he could spend with his family in Rosalith before the Night of Flames. He already felt pressured back then, but not that much!)

Stand By Me - Florence + The Machine (I know this is a FFXV song but to me it suits Joshua so much too! I feel like he really finds his strength through his love for his loved ones. There really is a shift in his personality when he reunites with Clive and Jill and starts meeting the Hideaway crew, and I think this is very beautiful!)

so uh this got a LOT longer than i anticipated because im very normal about this series. anyways. this is all under the cut

obvious answers. they're my blorbos so of course they're #1. they fucking hate each other <3

megido is far and beyond my favorite ofc. he dresses very classy but is self-motivated and ruthless. he has a rose motif. his idle animation is him shimmying. just look at him. he looks like if jet was a piece of shit (he already is, but not an ~Evil~ piece of shit)

he turns into a fucked up mutated version of himself if his brother dies bc har stabilizes the balance between their attributes so he becomes a weird looking dog version of himself. it's my favorite thing in the whole world.

and har (or hal) is your main villain. he wants to rule the world as it is in spite of his brother who wants it to change back. he's a terrible dad (and yes, the guardian angels do call him dad(dy), it's true). doesn't care what sacrifices are made as long as he can accomplish what he wants to.

also he has muppet mouth sometimes. it's great.

2. zohar metatron / sandalphon

treasure literally gave us this bigender/genderfluid LEGEND and said "here's your rival, they can just switch between attributes on a whim like you" and then doesn't play it for laughs at all. they're like your jealous sibling who learned how to whistle before you did and then when you show them you can also whistle they're like NO FAIR I DID IT FIRST.

also, they can turn into this against their will.

it's supposedly very painful. they have no control over it and they don't even want to fight the protagonist at that point. but it does have the best boss music in the game.

3. faust and sara

i know i keep putting pairs together but I CAN'T HELP IT there's so many good characters in this game. also they're in literally the same area so i should be allowed this one

faust and sara are both hosts of their respective game shows in media city. faust is silhouette and his show revolves around shadow puppetry used as real objects to fight against shyna (including, i kid you not, a fucking tank). sara is mirage and her show is a gambling show with an enormous slot machine. faust gets very little screentime and dialogue but he's just. fucking cool? look at him??? i have no screenshots of his boss fight sadly but it's such a wicked concept. also at the end he turns into a bomb and fucking? explodes??? for the ratings to go up. insane.

sara gets a little more time and she's awesome. here's what she really looks like:

she doesn't like being touched (meaning you can't rob her for money for long, an actual thing you do in this game to get money) and she's so fucking snarky i love her. here's my favorite voice clip of hers, it plays when you finish her fight:

4. serah (featuring delia)

very close name with sara but don't be fooled, they are VERY different! giant fucking butterfly woman!!!

serah was the very first guardian angel, and although it didn't make her the messiah, it did make her a gigantic fucking butterfly. her japanese name is seraphim. you can only fight her under the specific instance that during the last fight with zohar the time limit runs out before you beat them, and then har deletes (re: kills) them in front of you and brings out serah as a more "worthy adversary". also, this is her unique boss theme:

i say featuring delia on the title because delia is connected to her and it'd feel kind of wrong to mention one and not the other. their relationship is only ever implied and not stated outright, but the implication is that they were (are?) married, especially before serah became a guardian angel. the title "your wife is an angel" is referential to this, and har even threatens delia that if he didn't comply he would hurt his precious serah. (in the original japanese, the translation for that part is that he would be forced to "forward" serah; it sounds like an email, but it's supposed to imply he'd put her at the front lines of battle). also, i just wanted to show off delia because he is the third nose guy in this game

you wanna know what his boss fight is? if you guessed "you fight him on his game show where he makes soup and you throw silhouettes into his soup to hurt him", you'd be correct!

5. dynamis

i have nothing to say. just look at her.

she just wants to sell you some flowers. pretty freakin' flowers. :)

The songs Serah's Theme and The Sunleth Waterscape from Final Fantasy XIII had lyrics in English even in the Japanese version, but the English localizers found them to sound awkward so they were redone for the translation.

Seems like something they should have hired a English speaker to write out in the first place if they're going to do the whole, 'it's in English everywhere' thing.

Unless the localizers are assholes who would have changed it anyhow so they could make a few more bucks.

Waterscape one makes me think of FF-X which had a pretty bubbly soundtrack compared to some of the other ones iirc.

There are a lot of theory-crafting videos trying to uncover what FF7 Rebirth's "mystery" is all about. Now there are videos explaining how all those theories are wrong.

It's not good to see the trees and forget you're in a forest. Every single "theory" made for FF7R that I know of ignores one major detail:

"FF7R is a love story. It's literally in the lyrics of the main theme."

The main theme of FF7R is designed after the FF6 Opera, but instead of Terra saying she'll wait for Cloud to return to FF6 as Celes originally sung, she'll take the initiative and come into FF7R. Zack's timeline is the key. The anticipation is that Cloud will return to FF6 as he promised when FF7R ends.

It's peculiar that almost all theorists are male. Why is that important? Men care more about cold hard "facts" than the "emotional" stuff. Also, they are constantly on and on about the male characters of the story while ignoring the female ones who are actually the mystery of the game.

The "shippers" are more close to the answer than the "theorists", because "defeating Sephiroth (the instigator of the past) in his new form" is not a mystery, it's just a change. The "shippers" also look at more games that have the answers than the theorists who are stuck looking at the "Compilation". However, it would have worked better if they worked together.

In the first game (Remake), the only mysteries are about Cloud's love interest. Everything else that "seems" like a mystery (Sephiroth and Zack) is easily understood when you know who his secret love interest is and always has been. I mean, who actually knows who Cloud loved during the quarter-of-a-century since the game released? It's clear that this is the real mystery, and if the game clearly hints that it is a love story, then that IS the real mystery!

The Dissidia/WoFF-related hints will never be uncovered by the mainstream fandom until Terra Branford appears in FF7R or is so clearly hinted that it's impossible not to research it. Her appearance is so hinted at in spinoffs, the compilation, and especially in FF7 Remake itself that it seems silly to me that no one knows about it.

To "outside observers" it makes no sense that a character outside of "FF7 canon" can have an impact on the series, but that is not right to believe. The entire series of FF7 is designed after Terra Branford because of this very reason, but it has simply been stuffed under the rug of "design decisions" (yet, even these are ignored).

A grand majority of FF7's main female characters are partly designed after Terra Branford including Tifa, Aerith, Jenova, Priscilla, Lucrecia, Shiva, Betty, and yes, even Yuffie and likely more (especially with Rebirth).

The FF6 Opera is the actual "beginning" this story. FF8 made it's own version of the story by modifying the original cut FF6 character that was Cloud and creating a new darker-haired version of Terra. FF13 and it's sequels hint at the game by using Lightning and Snow (representing Cloud) and Serah (representing Terra). Vanille and Fang may also represent Cloud and Terra. I could go on and on about other games, but I already did.

Most people don't even know the basics. Here's the bear minimum:

Cloud's Story - Dissidia 012 Duodecim Terra's Story - Dissidia 012 Duodecim Leslie's Story - FF7 Remake

Cloud Strife was the main character of FF6. He likely had a different name and his appearance was more similar to Squall and Leslie. The "story" is about him "leaving" Terra for his FF7 "friends" and Terra saying that she'll "wait" for him in case he returns. That is called the "Reunion" or the "Promised Land" as promised by the developers. That's it.

Opera Omnia Burst Themes 2/?

With Opera Omnia shutting down, I decided to make a few posts about one of my favorite parts of the game: The Burst Weapons. Not because they were a powerful, much sought after weapon tier that gave big numbers with massive benefits, but because I have a love for Final Fantasy music, and what BTs I wanted was strongly dependent on what song would play when used.

An Intimate Night

During the pandemic, there wasn't much opportunity to attend music concerts. After all, there was a virus going around. As countries reopen with COVID-19 relegated to the rear view mirror, there has been a return of nighttime entertainment in the last few years. Of note for this humble blogger has been the return of musicals. Be that 9-5, featuring the songs of our favourite country singer: Dolly Parton, to Six and the Rocky Horror Show.

In the city itself, there have been a few smaller candlelit concerts with music ranging from movies to anime. A Distant Worlds hasn't graced the shores of Australia since 2017. And while we had a Kingdom Hearts music concert in 2019, it has certainly been quite a few years since I've gotten to enjoy a proper orchestra playing my favourite songs from a couple of my favourite franchises live.

No longer!

Given advanced notice by Facebook, I co-opted my good friend, @bleachpanda into the proceedings. It helped that the New World concert fell very close to her birthday. But unlike previous New Worlds that had been held at Chatswood Concourse, this time round, the two of us would enjoy the music from Final Fantasy at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

A place that I'd been to in my youth. Back when I was still being graded for piano and hadn't visited in a very long time.

After picking up two Krispy Kreme donuts and getting overcharged (for some reason, they charged me the price of a 4-donut box and I didn't realise it until I checked my bank balance the next day), I picked up @bleachpanda at Wynyard train station in the heart of the CBD. From there, we headed eastwards towards the State Library.

Despite the fact that we had bought tickets for the 6PM showing, eschewing dinner (which we ended up grabbing later anyways), there were still plenty of people in attendance. @bleachpanda and I were not the only music starved Final Fantasy fans out there.

And what a riveting opening number that the smaller chamber orchestra started off with! As soon as I heard the first few notes, a grin split my face from ear to ear. After all, this was Valse di Fantastica!

What followed next were a mix of songs both old and new.

I won't be able to put them in exact order as I thought it rude to pull out my phone and start recording the names but barring two songs from Final Fantasy XIV, I managed to remember most of them. I do believe one of them MAY have been Insatiable from the Shadowbrings DLC. The other was a more jazzy piece that I cannot, for the life of me, recall the name of. Probably because I should have played more of Final Fantasy XIV, but I digress.

The other songs that caught my attention were Town Theme from the first Final Fantasy. Then we had Besaid from Final Fantasy X, which I immediately recognised, followed by Heaven's Tower from Final Fantasy XI.

Then we had a variety of different songs. Unfortunately for @bleachpanda, none of them proved capable of keeping her engaged. These included Lenna's Theme from Final Fantasy V, Atonement from Final Fantasy XIII, Dark World from Final Fantasy VI and Melancholia from Final Fantasy XV.

Finally, in order to keep my poor friend awake, the orchestra played Force Your Way from Final Fantasy VIII along with a piece from @bleachpanda's favourite Final Fantasy game: IX. Except of course, A Place to Call Home was rudely cut short with a Final Fantasy XIV song.

We even got to hear the conductor, Eric Roth, sing when Serah's theme was played. And in fact, Eric Roth was a very memorable conductor as he gallivanted around the stage. Well, gallivant isn't quite the word either. He...danced? Or rather, conducted with the entirety of his body. From stamping his feet to waving his arms around as a means to tell the orchestra to add more oomph to a piece or to keep it more quiet.

Before too long, the concert came to an end. As it did, we were treated with several classic: Zanarkand, One-winged Angel, Victory Fanfare and Chocobo Medley. And to justify the acoustic guitar that they brought in we also heard a guitar solo of the main theme from the first Final Fantasy.

While it was no Distant Worlds, it was certainly a night that brought back a flood of memories of attending these concerts in the past. And, if anything else, was a sign that things in the world were finally returning to a state of normalcy. Whether we were ready for it or not.

Ruelle - Hold Your Breath This song feels like the calm before the storm, and this is something that makes me think of the end of XIII-2 and before. Ruelle - Bad Dream There were a few times in Serah's life where she felt like she was stuck in a bad dream, wishing so desperately to wake up, or to be woken up by a loved one and everything would be alright, and this song fits that.
