As unreaasonably long-winded as this story is on my patience, it is nice seeing all the friends and allies the Freedom Fighters met throughout the reboot all lend their support, while also giving us a little more insight into their teams like with the Shijin Warriors and Desert Raiders. Even the G.U.N. Commander is kind enough to lend the goodies a fleet to help them in combat!
But things aren’t entirely great for Sonic and co. Tails Doll is there.

Headcanon Freedom fighters (or basically how I would like to group characters together in teams to fight Eggman):
Knothole FF: One of the first to start their revolt against the mad Doctor. They live in the forest of the Knothole Village, under the leadership of Princess Sally Acorn.
Angel Island Guardians: Originally just starting with Knuckles, the group slowly grew as the timeline went on. Now becoming one of the largest of the FF, all of them have a close relationship with the Rad Red.
The Spiral Hill Restoration: Forming much later than the others, this group has ties to the Restoration, making it the most resourceful of them. Still new and inexperienced, the group has Lanolin the Sheep, a young leader that's still getting the hang of keeping things together.
Shijin Warriors: Hailing all the way from the east, these shaolin warriors where formed thanks to Monkey Kahn. They protect the land of Kar Leung and the Shijin Shrine, often being moderators to the neighboring clans.
Spagonai Fighters: A group residing on the outskirts Spagonia, operating on the old ruins of the mad doctor. They are well versed with the doctors' tricks and doodats. Johnny lightfoot acts as the leader of this rag tag group.
Woodland Kingsmen: From the woods of Merica, lead by Bow Sparrow, they seek to dethrone the current king and establish a new monarchy. They mostly rely on old forms of weaponry and rarely use modern technology.
Desert Raiders: The smallest of the groups, living off the dessert, they are often fighting at odds through tick and thin. Lead by Spike the Porcupine, they seem to idealize Sonic and co.
Arctic Fighters: From the cold of the northern tundra. Lead by Guntiver the Arctic Wolf, these fighters fight the cold just as hard as they fight for freedom.
Others that I group together, but don't have a stationary place:
Forget me Knots: A world traveling band, lead by the famous Mina Mongoose. Their songs are the inspiring melodies that keep the world safe from tyranny.
Chaotix: The three man group of detectives, lead by the man himself, Vector the Crocodile. These misfits can solve any case, for the right price. But when trouble seems too unjust, they are willing to give their support, on the house.
also all of the art here is not mine, art used are from: JoeAdok, Drawloverlala, liris-san, SomeJoJoGuy, and the castle I can't remember.

Smol predictions about Garou's potential hero name:
White Tiger
Derivered from his white hair and ferociousness when he fights, but for a righteous and noble cause, like the animal Tiger itself is a noble and majestic creature.
Byakko represents the King of beasts, the colour white, the element of metal, the season autumn, the planet Venus and the virtue of righteousness. It's one of the four mythological creatures that form up the cardinal directions in chinese mythology. The White Tiger of the West, The Azure Dragon of the East, The Vermillion Bird of the South and The Black Tortoise of the North, all surrounding the Yellow dragon Huánglóng in the center.
As we already have azure dragon of the east symbolism in Genos and Saitama and Garou are irrevocably linked by what has happened in the manga so far, a White Tiger Hero name would be fitting in both appearances sake and symbolically.
Another possibility would be to derive from the mythos of the Black tortoise, which mythos wise might be more fitting. Flashy flash can have the white tiger spot.
Black Wolf Warrior
(or a derivation of the words black, warrior, dark and wolf or maybe even mysterious)
Genbu is named differently than the other shijin; rather than directly describing a color and animal, i.e. Black Tortoise, his name is written as gen, meaning dark, occult, or mysterious, and bu, meaning warrior.
Other Chinese legends[citation needed] also speak of how the "Tortoise General" and a "Snake General" came to be. During Xuanwu's study to achieve enlightenment and divine status, he was told that, in order to fully achieve divinity, he must purge all human flesh from his body. Since he had always eaten the food of the world, despite all his efforts, his stomach and intestines were still human. A god[which?] then came and changed his organs with divine ones. Once removed, the original stomach and intestines were said to have become a tortoise and a snake, respectively. The tortoise and snake became demons[citation needed] and terrorized people. Now divine, Xuanwu heard of this and returned to slay the monsters he had unleashed on the countryside. However, as the snake and tortoise showed remorse, he did not kill them but instead let them train under him to atone for their wrongdoings. They then became the Tortoise and Snake generals and assisted Xuanwu with his quests (another legend held that the mortal organs were tossed out to become Wuhan's Tortoise and Snake mountains).
Genbu is one of the shijin, or Four Symbols, which are important mythological figures in Taoism. Genbu is the guardian of the north. He is associated with the Chinese element of water, the season of winter, the planet Mercury, and the color black. He represents the virtue of knowledge.
A description of the dark colours he often wears, his temperament, his animalistic fighting style, his lone wolf nature but that he also has a noble warrior's heart who never bends down. A warrior through and through.
Like the mythos, Garou also purged all human flesh from his body and became divinity, but he showed remorse and has to atone for his wrongdoings.

Sonally ‘Trust’
Tumblr media
"-And, that is why, Princess," Conquering Storm gloated, continuing on with the speech she had prepared, "The rest of the clans will no longer be able to resist us. The Shijin Warriors will not be able to take out our weapon in time, and- ..." She couldn't help but glare at the tied up chipmunk. "Annnddd, you aren't taking me seriously. I would like to know why."
Sally, who was looking both bored and unimpressed(even while being surrounded by ninja Egg Army Clan warriors), couldn't help but let out a sigh. "I'm sorry, Connie, but, you see, here's the thing...  I don't think you have this plan fully thought out. Why do you think things'll go well for you, as opposed to last time...?"
The cyborg ninja lynx couldn't help but grit her teeth in pure anger. The chipmunk was, of course, referring to the phoenix incident, that happened during the gaia crisis...And, how they had managed to use the Phoenix Guardian to take out their base of operations.
"Well, for starters, we have been planning for this moment for months. Each of my disciples and warriors know the details of the plan by heart. And, we've already taken care of possible deterrents. Like, how we kidnapped you, for instance. And, how we've employed a Badnik Brigade, lead by a powerful E-1000Z model, to distract and keep the Shijin Warriors at bay."
Sally couldn't help but narrow her eyes. "And, what about Sonic? Did you forget about him?"
"HA! You mean, your friend, the speedy blue hedgehog? We already know how much of a threat he is." Connie grinned a bit sadistically. "Thats why we have him trapped and pinned in an old fortress, primed to collapse at any second now~"
This would be it. This would be the news that would break her, she knew it~!
...However, instead, the princess' eyes held more defiance and determination than ever. "You think Sonic hasn't dealt with worse before?" Sally let out a short burst of laughter. "He's going to save the day, despite whatever you throw at him. Sorry, Connie, but, this wasn't your best plan."
The Lynx's robotic irises shrunk, the fiery fury clear as day on her face. "Enough of this! Execute her now, before I-!"
However, before she could finish, a sudden loud explosion came from somewhere in the base behind her. Turning right around, her eyes widened in both shock, and outrage.
"How?! He should be dead by now! Not even the Doctor's worst enemy could have-!"
"Hate to break it to you, Connie," Sally said, "But, not even your best plans could bring a Freedom Fighter down."
She whipped back around, and- She was free! How-
The blades. The rings! Of course, the rings, how did they forget they could do that? Did they just look so natural on the princess these days, or-?
"WHAT ARE YOU STANDING AROUND FOR?! KILL HER!"
All of those under Connie's command, Ninjas and others, rushed at the rodent royalty, eager to give her the fight of her life-!
...But, then, a speedy blue ball hit one of her warriors right ontop of the head, before bouncing off, and landing right infront of his partner, in full glory.
"Hey, Sal! Did Connie tell ya about the thing? Hope ya didn't think some lil crumbling stone fortress was gonna keep me down, did ya~?"
"Not a chance in the world~"
Andddddd, there went any advantage they had at the moment. The explosion had come from the base, likely where their weapon was, and, now they would have to fight two of the most determined warriors on the planet...?
The princess knew this would be an outcome, didn't she? The two of them had known each other for a long time. Probably knew if either or both of them had been forced into disadvantageous circumstances, they would still be able to get out of it without any trouble at all. Because, they had been Freedom Fighters longer than she had been conquering for Eggman...
But, it didn't matter to her. It didn't matter how strong the two of them were together. One of these days, they would not be strong enough to face her.
And, on that day, she would finally rid the empire of the speedy blue problem that had menaced the doctor for so long...

------
...I will never regularly write in this journal again, I am predicting that now. I think I will carry it with me from now on, in fact! Perhaps that will remind me to keep track of things with some semblance of timeliness!
In any case, at least it again has only been a few moons. Not that much has happened of too great import...well. There has been some great import. But nothing world shaking. Yet, at any rate. We all feel it coming..those of us that are left here, that is.
Throw wide the gates...whoever is speaking those words to our minds has slowly taken all of the Archons--- their souls, not their bodies. Called them elsewhere, to another place. Thancred, Y’shtola-san, Urianger-dono, both Alphinaud and Alisaie-dono....all asleep. They wait for me, I fear. I will join them soon, once the mysterious figure who calls for us --- his voice is familiar, but much has happened and I do not recall exactly who --- finally finds a way to tug me thence. He has called me to the Crystal Tower, though, and...perhaps that will give me answers. Soon, I think, things will begin to happen once again. A new adventure, I feel, of the gravity that was the Dragonsong War and the battle for Ala Mhigo and Doma’s liberation. I can but wait and see.
Mmm, what else...the empire is after Ala Mhigo once more, and I aided in a battle against them. Nearly was killed by Zen--- no, Elidibus, indeed wearing Zenos’ body for his own. I must have words with that voice for that! Thankfully our dear Estinien was nearby (I feel he follows us. If only the other Scions were here to help me bully him into joining properly!).
Ah...ah, yes! We spoke with Varis, the Emperor. Apparently, the Empire was founded by an Ascian. Horrible, that. Poor Cid and Nero. A terrible thing. Ah, and he did fill us in on the Ascians’ plan, at least: destroy the shards via Calamities one by one, until they are all once more one, consumed by the Mothercrystal or Zodiark into becoming chaos once more, able to be remade in the Ascian’s desired image. Frightening. We cannot work with the Empire, or parley with them. That much is certain now. The Ascians have them to their bones, and there is no saving it, save tearing it up from the roots. At least we have some allies.
Mmm...oh, we set up a wall protecting Doma from the Empire’s air fleet, using the Allag equipment buried beneath the Burn and hidden within the House of the Crooked Coin--- I should have some sentiment, given the latter is in the Steppes and sacred, but...I am Doman before I am Xaela, Shinui before I am Dalamiq. It will aid my home, my true home. So...there is no sorrow or frustration there. However, in doing so, we met with the strangest, most unexpected visitor--- Gaius van Baelsar...no, I am sorry. Simply Gaius Baelsar now. Defected and fighting the Ascians, calling himself Shadowhunter...I am--- happy, that he is alive. He was noble then, despite his mistakes, and noble now with the wool shorn from his eyes. He aided our Alphinaud-dono, and brought him to us once the call took his soul to wherever they’ve gone. He brought us news that Black Rose is still in production --- horrifying --- but also that he has killed at least one more Overlord. He is of our cause, even if he fights separately, and I am glad. Though I have yet to tell Cid and Nero...it is hard to find words.
Ah, what else--- oh! The sealing of Koryu was finished. We dealt with Seiryu, reckless snake that he was, and fixed Koryu’s seal; not without small sacrifice, however: Soroban has Genbu’s soul within him now, and will be the next Genbu. He is still him, though, so I and my small army of auspices will visit when we can, as will Tataru-san, I think. She’s grown fond of them. ...wait, have I written about that yet? No? Kami, so much happens I completely forgot about that! It’s not much of a story, simply aiding the Shijin, Four Lords, in repairing the seal on the mad auspice Koryu. Kind beasts, those four, those wounded by the loss of their companion Tenzin-dono. I was able to help, and I am glad. They’re sweet. I like Byakko best, personally, but Suzaku is lovely as well.
Ah, and we did finish dealing with Omega. Cid was able to face his fears, and Nero encouraged him, and Alpha --- bless his little heart --- saved us all, and, well. It ended well. Alpha is exploring the world he never knew, but he’ll visit on occasion, and...well. Nero did run off for a bit, but I dragged him back by his ear! He’s not about to leave now; he can’t survive Eorzea on his own, silly man. He should have learned that lesson by now. Though I think he did run away to keep Cid from strangling him over his bill, heh. Grown men, but they act like such little boys around each other...one day.
Oh, and Ivalice...well, that ended--- in some way. There’s little I can say, as this entry is already getting long, but perhaps we might end up aiding the Dalmascan Resistance in some way, as we’ve befriended a leader, a viera named Fran. Cid and I (and Nero) got to see their performance, after everything was settled and both Alma-chan and Ramza-san safe, and it was wonderful. Nero was delighted, and that made it all the better.
There was also a bit of a, ah, thing with Hildibrand again...but that’s best left unspoken of. As always. Ugh. At least I got to test my blade against Gilgamesh again, silly thing he is. Always fun.
As I have said...much has happened, and I sense a precipice once more, a calm before a wild storm. I will try to write more regularly once things begin, carry this with me as I go...but we shall see. For now, I wait, and watch my sleeping friends, and...well. I am the Warrior of Light. Whatever comes, I shall carry on. I have so far, and I shall keep doing so. I am needed; it is tiring, and I am weary, but...I like having a purpose. These are my friends, and I fight for them. And kami knows it will be nice to do my job again! Politics are tiresome, much as I am glad to know Hien-dono and glad for my home’s freedom.
We shall see what comes, and again I shall weather it. Time will tell.

Fushigi Yuugi ~Ao no Sho~
Tumblr media
Last week I went to see the musical adaption “Fushigi Yuugi ~Ao no Sho~” at Zenrosai Hall/Space Zero in Shinjuku. “Fushigi Yuugi” is a shoujo manga (girls’ comic) series by Watase Yuu that was serialized from 1992 to 1996, published by Flower Comics with a total of 18 volumes. To put it simply, it’s a high fantasy story with a lot of drama in between.
The story follows Miaka and Yui, two middle school girls in the middle of studying for their high school entrance exams. One day, they end up in the restricted section of the library and open a book called the Shijin Tenchisho (“The Universe of the Four Gods”) that transports them to the world within the book, set in ancient China. Miaka and Yui are separated and the story focuses on Miaka, who finds out that she is a long-awaited, prophesized priestess. She is charged with the quest of finding the seven warriors needed to perform a ceremony in order to summon the god reigning over Konan, the country where Miaka lands in the world of the book, and bring peace to the country. Meanwhile, her friend Yui lands in Kutou, a different country that is at war with Konan, and falls under unfortunate circumstances which make her turn against Miaka. The two girls each go on a journey to find their respective warriors and proceed to fight against each other, falling in love along the way and so on, a plot typical of a shoujo manga.
I read this manga when I was in middle school and loved it. The story is very angsty, but Watase-sensei does a great job with building the fantasy world and is so talented at incorporating scenes that make a young girl dream.
Tumblr media
The musical this time was the last part of the “Fushigi Yuugi” story, where Miaka and Yui finally confront each other and race to summon the gods. Many of the characters die in this part of the story, and there is just so much content overall that I was surprised they managed to pack everything into one show. The musical was, not surprisingly, 3 hours long with a 15 minute intermission, but even so, I felt that the events of the story went by so fast, like everything was being fast-forwarded. Still, they were able to include all the tear-jerking scenes, and I was able to follow along without any trouble. Although it was called a musical, it was more like a play with a little singing in between. I felt that the songs were very short, not even a minute long each, and that it was a bit of a waste as I know that some of the cast are quite capable of singing, having seen them in other productions.
The stage was small—or rather, the venue itself was rather small with a capacity of just under 600. My seat was an aisle seat closer to the back (even though I had gotten the ticket early on through the official lottery), but the stage didn’t feel far away at all and I had a clear view of the entire stage. For a fantasy story, the set was very simple with stairs and a platform on either side of the stage that was used for scenes with under 3 characters, and another long platform towards the far back of the stage (making it a total of 3 exits for the cast) and an open space in the middle of the stage for scenes that involved more characters. To make up for the simplicity of the set, the costumes were well-made, in my opinion, and looked exactly like how they were drawn in the manga without being too over-the-top. As it is originally a shoujo manga, I found a lot of the scenes and lines to be pretty embarrassing and definitely not meant to be said out loud... but when I mentioned this to an acquaintance after the musical, it seems I was the only one who thought so.
The cast featured ex-Morning Musume idol Tanaka Reina as the female lead. She was so cute! It looks like she used her real hair instead of a wig and tied it up in buns to match her character’s appearance, and the uniform looked natural on her. Although her voice was high-pitched and very typical of an idol’s both when she spoke and sang, it wasn’t to the extent of distracting me from the performance. I felt that she put on a very professional performance and had excellent stage presence. For most of the musicals I attend, usually an overwhelming majority of the audience is female, but thanks to the power of Morning Musume (and perhaps some of the other girls in the cast who are also idols), there were quite a lot of male audience members this time. On the other hand, I was quite charmed by Teruma, who played the main villain Nakago. I’ve only ever seen Teruma via video footage from another production, but I thought he put on such a good performance this time as well, and I really wish he had more opportunities to sing since he has such a great voice.
At the curtain call, Hirano Ryo, who played the male lead, mentioned that he was already 34 this year. Since he had been involved with this production since the first one 8 years ago, he must have been cast as Tamahome when he was 26 years old. Although it was my first time watching the musical version of “Fushigi Yuugi”, I could really see that he was experienced and comfortable with the production and his role; everything from his acting and singing to his stage presence was that of an experienced veteran. I think it’s amazing that he was involved with the same production for 8 years, and it must feel special and a little sad for this to be the last one in the series, but I guess it’s also good timing to wrap it up for the current cast in terms of age as well.
Tickets went for 8,800 yen and the production ran for a little over a week, with a special “repeaters’ bonus” for people who went to see it 3 times or more. Flower arrangements were also allowed at the venue, so the entire lobby was filled with flower stands and pots for the cast. A lot of them were custom-made with the cast member or character in mind; one even had flashing LED lights between the flowers, and another had balloons attached above the flowers that read the character’s name. I was so impressed! The cast must have been so happy. I do want to try sending a flower arrangement myself someday.
My only advice for going to see a play at this venue is that, if you are someone who prefers using the female restroom, I would really recommend using it before or after the show as a 15 minute intermission did not give enough time to accommodate all the girls lined up for the restroom.
Although they say that this is the last one in the series, I am secretly anticipating musical adaptions of the “Genbu Kaiden” and “Byakko Senki” parts of the “Fushigi Yuugi” series as well. This was a fun musical to watch without being too emotionally attached, so I hope they decide to do it again someday!

Note
Pretty sure this has been asked before, but what are the chances of adding post-Genesis characters to the Pre-Genesis timeline like the Desert Raiders, Professor Von Schlemmer and Gold the Tenrec, or the Shijin Warriors?
You’re right, that has been asked before. It’s all on a case-by-case basis.

[ ffxivwrite2020 ] ★ [ masterlist ]  ★ [ prompt #21 - foibles ]
[ illya & laurelis ] ★ [ 1,611 words ] ★ [ shijin au ]
takes place in an au where doma is split into 4 feuding clans who go to war every seven years over an important plot of land. laurelis and illya are part of the smallest eastern clan.
the dawn azalea was known for her worrying recklessness, but it’s made even worse when it came to small, helpless animals
“Laurelis, you’re scaring the cat.”
The gold hues of the setting sun baked the village in a warm glow, reflecting off the luster woven hair of the twilight sakura as she crossed her arms over her chest, watching as her companion a few summers her elder cooed and mewed at the trembling feline as if she were a child. From beneath the ominous grin of the oni she wore, the samurai’s eyebrows furrowed and her lips were pressed into a thin line.
It wasn’t as if Illya was against giving shelter to homeless animals, far from it. But it’s plain to see that the cat, lost and confused as it was, wants absolutely nothing to do with the larger, more humanoid looking cat person towering over it despite her already lowering herself onto her knees.
From beneath the cover of the oni mask, the young samurai lets out a sigh when the cat backs away from Laurelis, only for the maiden to scurry closer to it.
“It’s okay! Don’t be afraid, kitty! I’m here to help you!”
Laurelis rolls up the sleeve of her pink haori and reaches her hand out to the kitten, a little one with matted orange fur and wide chestnut eyes that glances down at her wiggling fingers with some amount of curiosity.. before letting out a meow and turning away to run.
“A-Ah! Wait!”
The young woman stands herself up to give chase, much to the dismay of her shorter, more sensible companion.
“Laurelis! Wait a moment- It’s-” Her voice goes ignored, as does her gloved hand reaching out to her friend, who has already sprinted through the village square and seems intent on chasing the cat all the way out of the safety of the bordered walls. “Sunset...”
She lets out a heavy sigh, tilting her head up to the sky as she watches the hues of the sky grow darker and darker with each passing moment the light of the sun’s rays graced over them. Soon, twilight will be upon them, their last bastion before the moon will rise, and the dark of the night has been known to be far more treacherous than day, especially for those foolish enough to step outside the safety of their clan borders.
She was ever the amaterasu to her tsukuyomi, that Laurelis.. and it was even reflected upon the titles they’d been granted by their foes and peers. It’d felt like forever since the two met, with Laurelis bright extroversion, nurtured in no small part by being spoiled by her parents, standing in stark contrast to her own tense and awkward nature around others.
And though Illya had always been envious of Laurelis radiant personality, and the way she’d effortlessly commanded the attention of everyone around her.. she did also wish she’d be a bit more...sensible when it came to her own safety and the safety of those around her. It wouldn’t hurt to exercise some amount of caution, especially knowing just how dangerous Doma is with the much anticipated war nearing. Laurelis had as much grace as a bull in an antique shop.
It’s made even worse in the presence of animals. Illya has seen Laurelis been reduced to tears at the mere mention of a lost pet. And she’d been completely and utterly incapacitated at the sight of a group of ducklings waddling their way through the city while they had been on their way to an important meeting with the clan heads.. to which the both of them later got sternly reprimanded for their late coming.
Admittedly, Illya had far better rapport with flowers and nature, and she was in no real position to speak when she’d happily spend hours upon hours nurturing the growth of the handful of flowerbeds they had blooming in their village. And had she the time, she’d expand her interests further across the Eastern Clan, cultivating as many gardens as much as time and her age would allow her... were it not for her responsibilities as daughter of the founder.
And it was that self-restraint, that burden of responsibility and obligation to her training that weighed her down, while Laurelis was ever free to express herself, pursue whatever she wished and wore every inch of her heart upon her sleeves.
But thank the kami that they got along as well as they did despite their differences.. and that the sakura of the twilight skies wasn’t nearly as callous as her patron deity of the moon as to leave her friend alone when she needed help. Laurelis’ safety and happiness far outweighed the importance of her obligations.
With a heaving sigh, Illya adjusted the straps of her mask. She fastens the purple sageo of her decorated scabbard, upon which the surface had been painted with a myraid of sakura petals, and tucks it tighter into her obi before sprinting off after her friend.
“Laurelis!”
Her dear friend’s recklessness truly knows no bounds, Illya laments internally as she runs out the borders of clan walls, despite warnings from the guards and all the way up the hill that led up to the treacherous Ryurin fields.
Crossing the war torn fields of no man’s land, Illya finally catches sight of her friend as she climbs up a hill, calling her name but abruptly stopping in her tracks when she sees what was ahead of them.
An orange feline, far larger and dangerous than the one that was mewling and trembling in Lauerelis’ arms, glared daggers at the miqo’te, and more specifically the prey pressed up against her chest. Small though it may be, food was still food, especially within this utterly cruel world - where you either feasted upon others, or are waiting to be feasted upon.
Its sabretooth is bared, and the tiger lets out a loud growl as if in demand for its food to be released, and Laurelis takes a step back.
“D-don’t come any closer!”
“Laurelis! What are you doing??”
The pink haired miqo’te doesn’t take her eyes off the tiger to turn her head back, knowing that doing so would lead to the helpless kitten in her care being put in danger, but she manages a nervous laugh back at Illya.
“I-I um.. may have forgotten my katana..”
“Kami forfend...” Reckless and suicidal, Laurelis’ little foibles were proving to be more than little, unimportant eccentricities at this point.
Twilight bathes preys and predator alike in a rapidly darkening glow, and Illya slowly reaches her hand to rest upon the handle of her katana.
The tiger evidently has no patience to wait for nightfall, and with a loud roar, it lunges towards the dawn azalea with its razor teeth bared. And with no regard for herself, Laurelis turns her back to the tiger, shielding the kitten tightly in her grasp.
“Begone with you!”
A flurry of cherry blossoms circle them, and the wind rises to blow them high into the sky as Laurelis hears but a single telltale sound of metal - the sound of a sword being drawn. And when she works up the courage to turn around, she sees Illya ahead of the tiger, the glow of her katana’s blade as threatening as it was comforting against the orange pink hues of the atmosphere, cutting through fear as if it were but a fine thread. The sakura petals that flew into the air flutter back to earth, each carried along upon the wind as if in an entrancing dance.
And the tiger behind her stood still, before the fur along its side and back falls off. And with a frightened whimper, the predator scurries away back towards the mountains, and Illya finally sheaths her sword.
“Illya! Are you okay?” Laurelis calls out and runs forward, an equal amounts of relief and remorse plastered across her face.
“I’m fine.” Illya responds, running slender fingers through her silken locks. Though her expression was completely obscured beneath the grin of the oni, Laurelis can tell her friend was herself heaving a sigh of relief. “That was a little too close for comfort.”
“I-I’m so sorry... I was.. I was being so stupid and careless.. If you hadn’t followed me.. I-” The miqo’te bites back her words, glistening tears pooling in her mismatched eyes that threatened to spill out and trickle down her face.
Illya’s silence was no comfort, especially not when she could not tell from the expression upon her masked face just how she was looking up at her. Was Illya disappointed? Angry? She’d have every right to be both, and she was almost certain she’d permanently earned her friend’s disdain when Illya finally responds, her voice lowering in volume.
“Don’t worry. I’m just glad you’re both okay.”
It’s a tone of voice she doesn’t get to hear often, especially not in public.. a voice that stood in stark contrast to the pretense of a refined and mature warrior Illya has grown so used to, a pretense that has become wholly a part of her. But Laurelis knew this voice to be the true Illya, one of an unparalleled gentleness and kindness towards her that she believed she did not deserve.
“So what are you going to name it?” Illya asks, turning as she begins to lead the pair down the hill back towards their village, and Laurelis pauses for a moment to contemplate before replying with a sunny grin.
“How about ‘tora’?”
“‘Tiger’? You mean.. like the one I just shaved clean..?”
A girlish giggle rises up into the air, along with an affectionate mewling of a cat.
“Well.. I was already reminded of a tiger when I saw his fur.. that was just a funny coincidence.”

Genbu #Genbu #玄武 #げんぶ ORIGIN: Genbu is named differently than the other shijin; rather than directly describing a color and animal, i.e. Black Tortoise, his name is written as gen, meaning dark, occult, or mysterious, and bu, meaning warrior. The word tortoise is not used for his name, because it was also used as a slur in China. So this euphemistic name was used to refer to the Black Tortoise. His name comes from Chinese mythology, where it is with the Taoist god Xuan Wu (the Chinese pronunciation of Genbu). Xuan Wu was a prince who lived in prehistoric northern China. He lived in the mountains, far from civilization, where he studied Taoism as an ascetic. He learned that to achieve full divinity, he would have to purge both his mind and body of all impurities. While his mind had become enlightened, he still had to eat earthly food, and so sin remained in his stomach and his intestines. So he cut them out and washed them in a river to purify them. When he did this, his stomach turned into a large demon tortoise and his intestines into a demon snake. The demons began to terrorize the countryside. Xuan Wu subdued them, and instead of destroying them he allowed them to atone for their sins by serving him. They became his generals: a snake and a tortoise. It is these two generals which became Xuan Wu’s—and Genbu’s—symbols.

I’ll spare yall from the lacklustre battle with the Dark Gaia Phoenix except for these few panels. Just imagine those flat colours and action but for several more pages. What I must point out is how cool Conquering Storm and her clan look, observing the situation from stalks of bamboo. Sometimes Gabriel Cassata’s colouring fits the mood better than I give him credit for.
Also Big...why are you like that? Those Egg Soldier better watch the hell out.
