Thinking about Arthur Lester.
Thinking about how his parents were alcoholics. Thinking about how it's implied he was either one or very close after Faroe died. How he spent many nights at The Jack's Bar "pickling his liver" as he put it. Thinking about how Parker saw this and got Arthur to talk by offering to buy him drinks until it wasn't needed anymore.
Thinking about how Arthur’s parents killed themselves. Thinking about how Arthur wanted to kill himself after Faroe died. How he wanted to die but couldn't bring himself to inflict that pain on others.
Thinking about how Arthur's life in so many ways parallels his parents yet even though he fell into alcohol and deep depression he somehow managed to keep going. He could have given up so many times. But he says he never gives up not after his parents died, not after Faroe died.
He's flawed, he's made a ton of mistakes, he's endured so much.
But he has promises to keep...and miles to go before he sleeps.

On Contamination By Ideas
Let's set aside, for the moment, the issue of giving JKR monetary encouragement in her bigotry. I consider that question settled: anyone who's decided to pay for Hogwarts Legacy has made a bad choice. That's not the issue I'm addressing here, so let's say someone has pirated it.
Hogwarts Legacy has harmful ideas in it. Hogwarts Legacy has many, very harmful ideas in it.
From the slaves that want to be slaves to the people who just want equal rights and also their shofar back but for some reason go about this by kidnapping innocents, HL is full of terrible ideas.
People are going to play this game.
Even if they didn't, frankly, they would still be exposed to harmful ideas from some other source. There is no way to avoid harmful ideas.
"We should at least avoid what we can!" some people say, and this is an understandable argument.
But consider: better than trying to avoid contact with harmful ideas is learning to think critically about them when, inevitably, you encounter them. Since harmful ideas can't be entirely avoided, wouldn't it be nice to practice recognizing them as harmful so they can't dig their way into your subconscious while you're not looking?
People are going to play Hogwarts Legacy.
People are going to read Lovecraft.
People are going to read the Christian bible.
People are going to enjoy media that contains harmful ideas. If there is any media that is completely free of harmful ideas, I have yet to encounter it!
Critical thinking is the salvation of decent people here. We have to be able to spot the poison so we don't internalize it, otherwise our only two choices are "consume media uncritically" and "consume no media at all." Rather than pushing people towards option two, it seems more useful to encourage critical engagement with whatever media a person wants to enjoy.
People are going to enjoy media that contains harmful ideas.
It doesn't have to taint their worldview.

obviously if you’ve been calling me things like “wrestler”, “fat”, and ”hulk”, since I was a little girl (clearly being used in a demeaning way and not really complimentary due to the association of strength and masculinity), I’m gonna assume it’s the same if you call me “tarzan”. like my brain is gonna automatically connect the fact that you have called me big my whole life to that word as well.
most girls/women don’t wanna be called that. you’re not commenting on how strong I am, you’re making a comment on my size. women have always been told/shown to be delicate and small. and fuck I want to be that too, I can't help it, It's all I have seen.
we don't get to see women with broad shoulder and thick arms, let alone be romanticized. It just doesn't happen. I'm not the socially acceptable "curvy", and it is what it is. I'm working on it. not all of us can look like ashley graham with her high check bones, sharp jawline, and small waist.
and don’t tell me i’m not allowed to take these things to heart, or that I need to grow up. I am allowed to be upset about this. you have ruined my fucking life.
don't get me started on the fact that it has been drilled into my brain that I will always get overlooked because of my size, and that I won't get married until i'm thin again. I'm not even 20 yet.

Disgust has absolutely no ethical weight. If you are basing your ethical positions on the emotion of disgust you should stop, it is entirely unjustified and leads to a huge amount of harm.

because sometimes there are invisible tests and invisible rules and you're just supposed to ... know the rule. someone you thought of as a friend asks you for book recommendations, so you give her a list of like 30 books, each with a brief blurb and why you like it. later, you find out she screenshotted the list and send it out to a group chat with the note: what an absolute freak can you believe this. you saw the responses: emojis where people are rolling over laughing. too much and obsessive and actually kind of creepy in the comments. you thought you'd been doing the right thing. she'd asked, right? an invisible rule: this is what happens when you get too excited.
you aren't supposed to laugh at your own jokes, so you don't, but then you're too serious. you're not supposed to be too loud, but then people say you're too quiet. you aren't supposed to get passionate about things, but then you're shy, boring. you aren't supposed to talk too much, but then people are mad when you're not good at replying.
you fold yourself into a prettier paper crane. since you never know what is "selfish" and what is "charity," you give yourself over, fully. you'd rather be empty and over-generous - you'd rather eat your own boundaries than have even one person believe that you're mean. since you don't know what the thing is that will make them hate you, you simply scrub yourself clean of any form of roughness. if you are perfect and smiling and funny, they can love you. if you are always there for them and never admit what's happening and never mention your past and never make them uncomfortable - you can make up for it. you can earn it.
don't fuck up. they're all testing you, always. they're tolerating you. whatever secret club happened, over a summer somewhere - during some activity you didn't get to attend - everyone else just... figured it out. like they got some kind of award or examination that allowed them to know how-to-be-normal. how to fit. and for the rest of your life, you've been playing catch-up. you've been trying to prove that - haha! you get it! that the joke they're telling, the people they are, the manual they got- yeah, you've totally read it.
if you can just divide yourself in two - the lovable one, and the one that is you - you can do this. you can walk the line. they can laugh and accept you. if you are always-balanced, never burdensome, a delight to have in class, champagne and glittering and never gawky or florescent or god-forbid cringe: you can get away with it.
you stare at your therapist, whom you can make jokes with, and who laughs at your jokes, because you are so fucking good at people-pleasing. you smile at her, and she asks you how you're doing, and you automatically say i'm good, thanks, how are you? while the answer swims somewhere in your little lizard brain:
how long have you been doing this now? mastering the art of your body and mind like you're piloting a puppet. has it worked? what do you mean that all you feel is... just exhausted. pick yourself up, the tightrope has no net. after all, you're cheating, somehow, but nobody seems to know you actually flunked the test. it's working!
aren't you happy yet?

can i say something. for years i thought the joke of the song short skirt/long jacket by cake was that he wanted a woman who was hung like a horse. like i thought when he says jacket it was a last-second fakeout because he very obviously meant to say cock. and the rest of the things in the song were just her personality and interests. which were secondary to her awesome penis

Bisan is calling for another global strike!
I saw some posts just outlining Jan 21st, and wanted to clarify that Bisan has called for a full seven days of action.
What a global strike would look like is:
calling in sick to work
purchasing bare essentials ahead of the week so you can observe the general boycott of goods / buying as little as you genuinely can
putting in a concerted effort to elevate Palestinian voices and make it clear that this strike is in support of a permanent ceasefire!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For those who will have to purchase necessary goods during this time, please observe the brands that the BDS movement is asking us to boycott!

♢♢♢
Right now is also a good time to mention some better uses for your money during this week.
Available e-sims in Gaza are running low!!
Mirna El Helbawi and her team are working round the clock to continue to connect Palestinians as Israel does its best to cut them off from the rest of the world.
You can learn how to purchase and send e-sims here, and below you’ll find a list of what is currently needed (the areas in brackets indicate what region you should select to buy e-sims in).

--
CareforGaza is an organisation that does verifiably good work, distributing supplies directly to Palestinian families.
They have a Gofundme set up at the moment, but because of Gofundme’s poor track record regarding refusing to transfer funds to Palestinians, I’d recommend continuing to donate directly to their PayPal here.

Good luck to all of you. Don't turn away from Palestine!

this whole oceangate submarine fiasco has actually led to a lot of interesting talks and debates about the grey area of human empathy vs the inclination to recoil at the bizarre behaviors of the ultra wealthy and how people struggle with both ideas and is actually very interesting to watch play out in different types of people
