Red Baron (1994) - A Short Review
Tumblr media
Here is a bit of an obscure one, shocking ain't it? Some of you may remember back when when I spoke of Super Robot Red Baron or its follow-up Mach Baron. Both really fun shows that also had some incredibly spectacle (also Jiro Dan moustache), so when I heard wind of a reimagining anime I knew I had to give it a watch. It's vastly different than the previous Baron series, approaching it more like a tournament series with robots akin to G Gundam (a super robot angle hmmmmmm) and I feel succeeding in a quite spectacular way. Fun characters, unique locations and a great cast of villains that are as equal parts memorable as they are entertaining.
Best of all, the mech designs are absolutely stellar and the reinvention of Red Baron's design is quite gorgeous I'd say. Worth the watch.

What If? Vol 2 #7: “What If… Wolverine Was an Agent of SHIELD?”
I assume the show would have had higher ratings, hey ooooooooh!
Also, I thought Wolverine was an Agent of SHIELD at some point. He’s been everything else.
This What If? specifically means what if Nick Fury showed up right after Wolverine’s first appearance in Hulk #180-181.
This What If? is also aggressively Liefeld. He did the art and he came up with the story idea.
So, What If? Wolverine was scooped up by SHIELD instead of the X-Men? Would things be better forever or worse forever? Lateral move?
So, Nick Fury shows up to borrow Wolverine from Canada to help him with a little LMD problem.
Hydra has co-opted SHIELD’s Life Model Decoys and Fury suspects SHIELD has gotten super-infiltrated by them.
Because SHIELD is always infiltrated by something.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In fact, the problem is so bad, even Fury’s second-in-command has been find replaced.
Fury asks Wolverine and What-is-That-Haircut Black Widow to take care of the LMD’s while he tracks down Hydra.
Since Logan and Natasha are both super competent, they do it easily.
Tumblr media
Wolverine even has time to give Natasha a haircut mid-mission and they still don’t break one hour to hunt down every LMD that is pretending to be a real boy on the Helicarrier.
With that done, Fury organizes a raid on the secret Hydra base to save real Dugan.
Tumblr media
Baron Strucker tries to use Dugan as a hostage but he’s so bad at killing hostages that Wolverine jumps across the entire room and cuts off Strucker’s robot arm before he can hurt Dugan.
Then Nick Fury tells Wolverine he needs to personally fist fight Strucker and he does that.
Completely wild. Wolverine just sitting and watching, nodding approvingly, while Fury proves he’s cool and manly too by beating up a one-armed Nazi. And then kills said guy by jamming his robot stomp into a power outlet.
After this successful mission, Fury offers Wolverine full employment as a SHIELD agent. He even cuts through the red tape to get the Canadian government to let him go.
Xavier does show up at some point, trying to recruit Wolverine. But he’s perfectly happy as a SHIELD agent and declines. But he does promise he’ll use his sway to help out the X-Men.
Which he gets a big chance to do when a Strucker LMD attacks Fury’s flying Ferrari, causing it to crash and kill the SHIELD director.
Fury apparently made arrangements for his death that would allow Wolverine to become the new director. Despite being Canadian and the newest recruit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So on the scale of worse, lateral, or better, SHIELD Agent Wolverine lands on better.
He uses his position as Director of SHIELD to stop the Sentinel program from being re-started and ruins Senator Kelly’s whole career so the Mutant Registration Act never picks up any steam.
This version of humanity learns to co-exist peacefully with mutants. All thanks to Wolverine saying yes to a job offer.
Which creates the weird implication that Nick Fury could have done all these things in the 616 but just didn’t want to.
Damn. Can’t believe Nick is a mutantphobe. Tsk tsk.
This was a breezy What If to read and explain because it was mostly interested in having cool action scenes where Wolverine, Black Widow, and Nick Fury kick ass.
Even for a What If, robot Strucker randomly showing up to kill Fury so Wolverine can get fast-tracked into being Director of SHIELD is pretty arbitrary.
And while it’s nice to see an alternate world doing better, Wolverine single-handily solving prejudice against mutants by falling assbackwards into being in charge of the intelligence community sure is something.

Marvel Worlds project plan: Captain America (vol. 1)
Synopsis:
Steve Rogers has been living in the present for a few years and has led the Avengers. Hydra, the enemy organization he fought against during World War II, has returned and are hunting him. Now he is on the run from their operatives.
Characters:
Steve Rogers/Captain America - A WWII super soldier who fought Hydra and Nazis. He was frozen for decades and was awoken by S.H.I.E.L.D. in the present day. He became co-leader of the Avengers.
James "Bucky" Barnes - Steve's best friend from WWII. He was captured during the final years of the war and was brainwashed into becoming the Winter Soldier. Since he was recovered by Steve, he has been living relatively quietly unless needed.
Johann Schmidt/Red Skull - The leader of Hydra and arch nemesis of Captain America. He has survived for decades thanks to the efforts of Arnim Zola.
Baron Heinrich Zemo - A Danish aristocrat and high-ranking Hydra officer. His father was Major Zemo of Hydra, who fled capture after the war.
Arnim Zola - The lead scientist of Hydra. His body gave out, so his mind was downloaded into a robotic body that he has upgraded over the years. His "Formula X" has kept Red Skull alive over the years.
Cpt. Hunter Hayes - A Hydra operative who joined the evil organization after being dishonorably discharged from the United States Army Corps.
Helmut Zemo - The son of Heinrich Zemo. Ever since he was a child, he has trained to be a master swordsman. He is more impulsive and impatient than his father, but he has the potential to be a strategic genius like him. All he needs is focus.
Other Information:
Sam Wilson may make an appearance in volume 2.
Helmut Zemo is being set up to be a bigger villain in the future.

Pretty much every toku that's ever been can be found on Internet Archive, & just a heads up for IF you're ever considering Super Robot Red Baron, it was officially subbed on DVD in like 2008, then it quickly went out of print because the company went under, then Mill Creek released with their usually QC, as in the subs were all several seconds out of sync, Internet Archive is the only place online where I've found MKVs with the properly times subs.
Yeah but the only thing is as nice as IA is for archiving everything its organisation is dogshit and in my experience most the time the stuff there has been uploaded in low quality (such as Godzilla). AND is even worse about saying where the subs even come from than the cat site. It’s a last resort for me tbh

LAND LAMPREY is yet another super weird obscure pick from old D&D canon. It's exactly what it sounds like, a lamprey that lives on land. in D&D it's a little more straight forward, but here we get these big leech people with legs and arms.
ELECTRIGGER is seemingly a reference to the old Super Robot Red Baron show? It was one of the titular giant robot's finisher moves. Other than the obvious electric eel thing I have no idea why they opted to make it an eel monster.
EELFOLK originally mistakenly romanized as EELVOLK, it appears just to just be an original, literal term for WA for eel people. I dunno what else to say about that. I do love Japanese freshwater eel though, despite the traditional preparation methods being sort of offputting.
HYPOPUS is a weird one. The original Japanese is the words ARTEDI KNIFE, it seems like the localization team actually picked up on this being a reference to Hypopomus artedi, a type of blunt nose knife fish. They are vaguely eel-like in shape. No idea why they warrant being the basis of a monster.
