There, There by Tommy Orange is absolutely breathtaking. I'm only around an hour in but wow. Like it's been such a long time since I've read a contemporary novel this intent on thematic layering. Like everything goes back to the history lesson at the beginning. And it's layered in such a coherent way whilst also being so kind and considerate of the characters. The characters are real people and there's also such a tangible plot and motivations that they navigate through. And all of it works and is balanced so well! It honestly feels cinematic in how effective it is. Everything has a purpose. No wasted letter. Like even the dialogue tags show how a character thinks. And Tommy Orange! I found out about this book through the radio and it still blows my mind how he didn't get into reading earnestly until his 20's. Like what?!?!? Howwwww? He uses quotes from Bertold Brecht and Louise Erdrich like somebody would write dialogue. It's conversational and affecting. I honestly can't get over it. Also listening to There, There right after Dene mentioned it changed the whole book for me.

i hope the team is keeping themselves hydrated!! especially the SEA members of the team, we're currently in satan's asshole
We are! Though none of us currently live in SEAsia (glances around at the immigrants in the house) haha I am planning on flying back to the Philippines for bits of the summer so I suppose I will be joining y'all in there
In the meantime take care of yourselves if you're living in south east asia! I've seen enough egg frying on pavement videos to guess how rough it is right now ^^,

I just think it’s funny when people say things that are so untrue and offensive. It’s just so delightful to me. I can’t even be mad. It’s like watching someone confidently striding toward a lamppost and insisting that lampposts have never existed while glaring AT the lamppost and insisting that they have THE RIGHT to walk into whatever they want! Honestly I have a small bit of affection for them, because isn’t it beautiful that just idiots exist? It’s a diversity win. Please stay away from me but please also tell me about the next stupid thing you’re planning on.

I'm not turning into a weird gentrified Tumblarian I swear but like...despite being a shitpost Dave's really is the best Afton huh? A deplorable, creepy stalker who kills kids and manipulates others into doing shit for him. Whilst also having a valid reason and equally tragic upbringing that balances him out into a tragic character who, despite killing fucking kids, you can't help but sympathise with?
And who WASN'T made by Scott

I confess, aside from Creep, I am Late To Radiohead. But better late than never, because this song and video just seem to perfectly sum up the mood I'm trying to evoke here...
