Ok, so here's one of MY unpopular Gilmore Girls opinions: I don't believe that Rory only stayed with Dean to keep everyone else (including her mother) happy. I don't. I think she did love him IN SOME WAY. Was she "IN Love" with him? It's hard to say. But she genuinely cared about him, enjoyed his company enough to want to be friends with him after breaking up, and... I do think there were some aspects of their relationship that she genuinely liked and wasn't sure she wanted to give up. I know a lot of people hate Dean (I'm not fond of him myself), but this isn't about MY preferences or YOUR preferences, it's about RORY'S, and when I look at the actual show without filtering it through my own wishes, that's what it looks like to me, especially given the way she kept comparing Dean to Jess after she started dating him. Rory wouldn't have done that unless there were parts of that relationship she missed! According to what Rory herself said, she LIKED the way Dean made her feel cared for and important. Even his jealousy and clinginess, which did bother her, could be explained away because they were "symptoms" of how "important" she was to him! He WANTED her! He wanted her more than Rory wanted him, actually, and sometimes? Sometimes that's an intoxicating thing, especially when you HAVEN'T always felt wanted. He made plans and took her out and made her feel "spoiled" (Rory's words!), and that made her feel special! She may not have been "in love" with him in a grand, all-consuming, passionate kind of way, but she liked "being his girlfriend" a lot of the time.

This is why I think she wavered so much when she did fall in love with Jess. Because despite the things she would gain from choosing Jess (the all-consuming, passionate kind of love, deep connection and companionship), she would be giving up (and hurting!) someone she felt a lot of affection for! And also giving up the ease of dependability, familiarity, and yes, someone who fit neatly into the life and relationships she already had. I think she was almost prepared to do so when Jess moved back to Stars Hollow "for her," but when he appeared to move on so quickly with Shane, it made her doubt whether Jess wanted her as much as she wanted him, and that felt dangerous. Why give up someone who clearly DID want her, to chase after someone who might not?

Yeah, anyway... I feel like I've wandered a bit, but the bottom line is: I really do think it was only a little bit about pleasing her mom, and a lot to do with how Dean was good at making her feel wanted, even if it was to a toxic degree.

hiiii haha. hello. exceptionally awkward introduction bc idrk how to start something like this so let's just jump right in. im taking a break from this account for a bit. i know i said i wanted taob out before halloween and currently im fine sticking with that deadline, but if i decide i need longer away then i will take longer away. every time ive reassured people that id never abandon a fic and updates will always come eventually i never once considered that my writing and ability to feel safe and comfortable on this site would be actively taken from me, so im not even going to apologise. i dont want this either and more importantly i dont fucking deserve it. i dont know what it is in the past year, if ive hit a certain amount of followers or 'popularity' that's made it so the natural ratio of positive to negative interactions must in turn go up, but there's been a serious uptick in weird asks for me. the annoying part is that a very small amount of them are actually objectively mean and hateful, the rest are just weird and invasive from people who seemingly dont realise that's what they're being. ive reached a point where i dont care if the intentions are good. it's not my job as a 20 year old tumblr user of all things to defend the morality of someone who couldnt even bother to come off anon. unfortunately, after blocking only one or two anons, the weird asks have decreased substantially, which says all you need to know about the fascinating and exhilarating lives led by these people, but ive also gone on to turn anon asks off entirely. this is something i actively fought against doing and had to be pushed into by my mutuals (who have been the coolest people on planet earth during this entire thing). turning off anon was a big deal to me even if it sounds silly. i felt betrayed and like id been backed into a corner because it was so vehmently something i DIDNT WANT that to feel like i had to do it anyway for my own mental health??? that sucks. so even though ive 'fixed' the problem, im still kind of reeling and uncomfortable every time i come on tumblr. i hope it's just something i need time to ease because i'll truly be devastated if this becomes 'ruined' for me. tumblr exists as the only place in the world where i am honestly every facet of myself without shame or hesitation; losing that would be insanely harmful to me. and to the people who cant appeal to the actual human behind the post, let me put that in words you can understand: we wouldn't get any more writing 😦😦😦 riots and fires and sirens, i know. so yeah. to anyone who has sent me an anon ask and you're now wondering if you were part of the problem, im firmly of the belief that you'll know if you are. when i say 'weird asks' i dont mean 'you sent me a para about your personal life just to vent or ask for advice' or 'you sent me a really deep emotional compliment about the impact me and/or my writing has had on you' - i love asks like that, so much that i put off taking a break and turning off anon solely for the joy they bring me. im sorry that it might feel like you're being punished too bc of the actions of what in reality is a HANDFUL of weird people, but this is what i feel like i have to do to feel safe and not go insane every time i log in. love you guys, hopefully ill see you soon x

My Complicated Feelings on Angels Take Manhattan/How Amy's Story Should Have Ended

You know I think the reason why Angels Take Manhattan has always felt off to me (other than the logical gaps/statue of liberty Weeping angel/why couldn't eleven just fly to New Jersey in the 1940s and then just bus in) is that all of Amy's arc up literally beginning in Eleventh Hour/Amy's Choice going through God Complex and Dinosaurs In A Spaceship and the Power of Three feels like it's building up to Amy finally choosing her domestic life/growing up over travelling with the Doctor. Like, it feels like it's building up to a "Martha leaves the Doctor" type ending where Amy decides to choose her normal life and growing up over the Doctor, the kind of situation where he will always be her friend but that she has decided to make her life in the here and now. Something that might feel bittersweet, but ultimately satisfying.

But instead Angels Take Manhattan is about the Doctor and Amy/Rory getting ripped apart ala Ten/Rose or Ten&Donna and it just doesn't quite fit right? Like, Amy gets to choose to stay with Rory but it's framed as more of a tragedy from the Doctor's end? And it's still a repeat of the whole "Rory died so I won't live a life without him" dilemma in Amy's Choice rather than "I choose to grow up on my own terms of my own free will." Like, they were attempting the "choosing to grow up" bit with the final afterword by Amelia Williams part of the story but Rory doesn't get to make a choice over anything. He gets no agency. Hell, Amy doesn't get to choose the life she and Rory were building for themselves so carefully in the Power of Three- that gets ripped away from her, too.

I honestly love the storyline that Amy and Rory and Eleven had, buried between all of the Silence plots and the weird way it ended. I liked the idea of growing up and choosing to settle down while still keeping friends with the stars. And I feel like the need to make their ending tragic kind of undercut some of the impact that Amy getting to make her choice to build something of her own and choose that could have had.

been seeing a lot of questionable takes on my dash lately, like “mitchum was right to tell rory she didn’t have it” and “rory writing a book about her life is stupid” and I’m just… stunned by them. not only are they flat out wrong, but both of them pointedly insult rory and her capability to perform as an adequate journalist and storyteller. we know rory has it because it’s established throughout the entire series—she does great at the franklin and even manages to put spins on what should be crap stories like the pavement piece; she also rises to the top at the YDN and becomes editor in chief. not only is she great when it comes to writing (which is drilled into the viewer and over—it’s an indisputable, canonical fact), but she’s also great under pressure and defying expectations. when she went to chilton the odds were against her—it was predicted that she wouldn’t be able to catch up and would flunk out. and what did she do instead? she became valedictorian and went on to attend an ivy league university. mitchum’s critique of rory is fucking laughable when you consider all of that, but it’s even more ridiculous when you factor in that he was barely around throughout her stint interning for him, and decided that she “didn’t have it” simply because she didn’t speak up during one meeting, even though doing so would usually be considered incredibly disrespectful. rory has amazing ideas and she’s fantastic at executing them, and we know she was a successful journalist until richard’s death, which is the only reason she was in a rut at all. therefore the idea that she “doesn’t have it” is, again, canonically incorrect.

as for the other thing, rory writing a book about her life is the opposite of stupid. to the people who agree with this: you do realize you just watched an entire show about her life and found it entertaining, right? it’s a memoir about her childhood, her relationship with her mother, and how being the daughter of a teen mother affected her. there’s absolutely a market for that sort of thing. not only that, but this is rory we’re talking about: she’s perfectly capable of translating the magic we see on screen onto the page. in fact, i think it’s kind of implied that the book will play out similarly to the show and have the same kind of vibe—it sucks you in and keeps you coming back for more. anyway, tl;dr, all the rory bashing and complete lack of faith in her ability to be a good journalist is pretty unfounded and unfair. i feel like it’s just another outlet that people are using to put her down, but it has no basis in fact (like most anti-rory takes).

I'm so sick of the Rory hate on TikTok yes she made some mistakes but people act like she's this horrible manipulator when that is not the case. I saw a video saying "Rory on her way to guilt trip and sleep with an engaged man she turned down while she has a boyfriend." First of all Rory didn't guilt trip Logan into anything he willing went out of his way to cheat on his fiance even trying to get Rory a house so he could keep her on the side. Rory was the one who had to break things off because she felt bad, when it was Logan who wanted to continue with the affair. Rory anti's always villianize her for turning down Logan's proposal when she wasn't ready but don't even mention how Logan could have just stayed with her if he wanted to be with her, she was young and it was okay that she wasn't ready to get married. Yeah the whole Paul thing was bad it was bad writing, and the cheating with Logan wasn't good either, but they always villianize her when Logan was the one who was willing cheating on his fiance and they never call him out on his shit, but Rory somehow is some manipulating evil person as if we didn't see Logan constantly gaslighting her and manipulating his way through life his entire screentime. If anything Logan took advantage of her vulnerable state. She had just lost her grandfather and was going through a depression. Rory's not perfect and makes mistakes but the way the Gilmore Girls fandom treats her is just frustrating.

I can't consider some people's best interests to be in Rory's happiness whenever I see them argue that because of Jess' behavior, nothing Logan or Dean did will ever be as bad, therefore they were better for Rory (or at least a better option than Jess). That's just you deliberately playing within the confines of the show by thinking "well x isn't as bad as y therefore he's the best option" none of them are the best option when you purely weigh in their negative moments. Dean and Logan are both fine with arranging a relationship that make Rory the other woman, Logan was fine with making no further attempts at contacting her after one significant fight, then avoiding responsibility over his lack of honesty. Dean's anger issues alone are worth a whole discussion because he purely puts the blame on Rory for things that she actually had little to do with. And this is supposed to be fine because it's not as bad as what Jess did? That's really just you saying Rory deserves nothing better beyond that, which I find idiotic.

If you really want to go into what Rory deserved, it goes far beyond how her boyfriends treated her in certain moments, because the show's writing makes no hesitation to put her in such degrading moments that after a certain point, you have to ask if it's part of a larger problem. Until then, you're really not convincing me that you only think about what's best for Rory or what Rory actually wants.
