1862 - Commandeering the USS Planter .
Tumblr media
The USS Planter, a steamer and gunship, steals through Confederate lines and is passed to the Union, by a southern slave, Robert Smalls, who later was officially appointed as captain, becoming the first black man to command a United States ship.

50 years ago this week, the USS Monitor was discovered off the North Carolina coast, 16 miles south-southeast of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Today, this site is protected by Monitor National Marine Sanctuary.
Because the wreck site of Monitor is not easily accessed by the average diver, NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries and The Mariners' Museum have created this virtual collection to act as a public resource to display many of the artifacts in pre- and post-treatment status to highlight the benefits of conservation and the science behind the conservation process.
Tumblr media
Explore the collection to learn more about the USS Monitor's artifacts and the stories these historic treasures can tell about the U.S. Civil War and life at sea in the 1860's:

Wreck of CSS Hunley, a Civil War submarine, 1863
The CSS Hunley, also known as H. L. Hunley, was one of several submarines built by the Southern Navy during the American Civil War. She in particular was launched in 1863 and was the first submersible in wartime history to succeed in sinking an enemy ship.
On 17 February 1864, the Hunley attacked the USS Housatonic, which was part of a blockading fleet of the Northern Navy to seal off Fort Sumter and the port city of Charleston in South Carolina. The warship was sunk, but the Hunley did not return to its base either. It could not be raised until 136 years after its disappearance in 2000. The boat probably sank due to the shock wave caused by the explosion of its own torpedo.
The submarine was first named H. L. Hunley, but when it was raised for the fourth time, it was given the name CSS Hunley in honour of the inventor.

Knowing that renaming a ship is considered to be bad luck—which explains why the Royal Navy retained the foreign names of captured ships—I am looking up the circumstances of changing a ship's name. There is a ceremony involved, at minimum, you may invoke Poseidon to acknowledge the new name.
Did the United States Navy follow protocol in renaming USS Robert Smalls? In any event, I think it's fitting to rename a US ship with a name honouring a Confederate victory to that of a man who stole a Confederate ship in the most fearless and dashing way possible.

Robert Smalls: Sea captain, maritime pilot, politician and successful businessman, owner of a fantastic Albert watch chain.
From the linked article by NPR:
His list of accomplishments is almost unbelievable. On a Philadelphia streetcar he was asked to give up his seat to a white man. He started a boycott that led to integration. He served as brigadier general in the South Carolina militia. He bought his former enslaver's house. And he started a school, published a newspaper and founded a railroad.

Meet the South Carolina native who created the transgender pride flag
Monica Helms dabbled with dressing as a woman in the secrecy of her own room while serving as a crew member on the USS Francis Scott Key submarine in Charleston in the 1970s — and she was almost caught by her superiors. Two decades later, Helms created the renowned Transgender Pride Flag in 1999. The road to boldly expressing her creativity and love for the transgender community was arduous. Born in Sumter in 1951, Helms prayed to God when she was 5 years old to make her a girl.
“As I got older, I started trying on my mother’s clothes when I was 12-13,” Helms said. “Because I felt like I wanted to dress as a woman because it was a part of me that was missing.” While serving in the U.S. Navy and stationed in San Francisco in 1976, she went out in public for the first time dressed as a woman.
“I was very quiet about it, of course, obviously. It felt natural,” Helms said. The United States military counted “homosexual acts” as grounds for discharge in the 1970s. After World War I, sodomy was a crime under a court-martial. Helms left the U.S. Navy in 1978. In 1992, she began taking hormones and officially came out as a woman in 1997. Worried that her transition would upset her father, Helms’ mother told her she wasn’t allowed back in her parents’ house in Phoenix, Arizona. At the time, Helms’ dad had Alzheimer’s and diabetes. “That was very painful,” Helms said. “That made me want to get a job out of Phoenix and go somewhere else. That’s why I came to Atlanta.” Throughout the ‘90s, Helms was encouraged by Mike Page, the creator of the bisexual Pride Flag, to create a transgender pride flag. She first flew it in 2000 in a Pride Parade in Phoenix.
“The stripes at the top and bottom are light blue, the traditional color for baby boys. The stripes next to them are pink, the traditional color for baby girls. The stripe in the middle is white, for those who are transitioning or consider themselves having a neutral or undefined gender,” Helms explained. Although legal progress has been made in recent years to benefit the LGBTQ+ community, such as the legalization of same-sex marriage in 2015, Helms said she believes the United States has a long way to go toward equality. Georgia and South Carolina’s transgender community suffers discrimination under state laws, including South Carolina’s recently passed ban on transgender athletes in high school sports. “We’re going to have to get visited by aliens in order for trans people to not be discriminated against. They’re trying every so often to pass laws to restrict transgender kids from getting medical help,” Helms said. “It’s very upsetting.” She encourages anyone with a desire to transition to make sure they have a supportive community around them. Helms didn’t have that while she transitioned as an adult. “I had friends, and I lost some of them. But now, I have more friends that I can count on — people I know real well — than I’ve ever had in my entire life,” Helms gushed.
Now, her relationship with her family is “perfect.” Helms said that no one in her family has a problem with her transition. “My father passed away in 2004. When that happened, my mother wanted me to come back,” Helms said. Helms founded the Transgender American Veterans Association (TAVA) in 2003 and is proud of the organization’s work to encourage the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to publish a directive for trans rights. “We received emails from trans veterans telling us that (the directive) worked. That places that they were not able to get help before are helping them,” Helms said. “I feel that we may have even saved lives, in that respect.” In her free time, Helms builds and launches model rockets. She also loves to produce videos and go camping with her wife, Darlene Darlington Wagner.
June, recognized as LGBTQ+ Pride Month, is one of Helms’ favorite times of the year, and she loves that the month encourages the queer community to be themselves in the face of adversity. “We’re very proud to be who we are,” Helms said. Since the early 2000s, Helms has always been shocked to see her flag in various places globally. “I’m always in wonder of where I see it. I’m always excited to see it in different places. And, you know, (to see it) in conservative states, it’s just, it’s amazing,” Helms said. But there’s one other place Helms wants to see the transgender pride flag fly.
“I need to see it in the International Space Station,” Helms declared.

U.S. Marine Corps now has two F-35C squadrons
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 04/24/23 - 16:00
The United States Marine Corps officially established the Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 311 as the second squadron of its kind in service, with the reactivation ceremony of its F-35C Lightning II aircraft held on April 14 in Miramar, California.
On October 15, 2020, the Marine Corps took a first step towards its transition to the F-35, deactivating the old VMA-311 and later reactivating the VMFA-311 with the F-35C Lightning II.
The reactivation supports the goal of the 2022 Marine Corps Aviation Plan to modernize USMC aviation. The plan prioritizes readiness, sea-based aviation and modern resources.
Tumblr media
“We are taking an aggressive approach to develop capabilities that will move, sustain and support the individual Marine, making the force more lethal, effective and capable of surviving,” said the then deputy aviation commander, Lieutenant General Mark R. Wise in the 2022 plan.
“The F-35C brings a long-range hunting/attack platform with the most advanced stealth and sensor capabilities of the Marine Corps,” said Lieutenant Colonel Michael P. Fisher, commander of VMFA-311. "The Harrier was a great weapon that served the Marine Corps well and was replaced by a more advanced and capable platform. The F-35 was designed for short-term and future combat."
Tumblr media
The Tomcats, a notable "first" aviation squadron of the Marine Corps, originally commissioned in 1942 as Marine Attack Squadron 311 at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, where it was first deployed in support of World War II.
The squadron paved the way for Marine Corps aviation in many innovative events: it was the first marine squadron to use fighters for dive bombing missions, carried out the first naval combat mission with jets in 1950 during the Korean War, was the first marine squadron to employ the AV-8B Harrier in combat during Operation Desert Shield, the first to carry out combat missions in Afghanistan
Tumblr media
In 2020, the US Marine Corps Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 314 declared its initial operational capability (IOC) for the fifth-generation F-35C fighter designed to operate from U.S. Navy aircraft carriers.
In February 2022, the first U.S. Navy F-35C crashed into the South China Sea while operating on the USS Carl Vinson. Despite this setback, the Navy remains committed to the capabilities and performance of the F-35C, which was recovered on March 2 of the same year.

₃ the first year after his graduation was rough. thomas was often overstimulated on missions, leading him to shut down entirely. he would pull through with sheer force of will, often being the only survivor, earning himself the nickname the grim reaper. eventually, he learned that if he controlled his stimuli during missions, he was able to handle much more. he became completely silent, wore a filtered gas mask, and outfitted his ear-piece to muffle external sound. after learning to accommodate, his mission were always successful.
₄ at age 20, he lead the mission to umbrella's NEST. it went bad, as it usually does, but they did what they could. tommy lost his whole team in raccoon city and was stuck there for nearly a week before being extracted by nighthawk. he delivered the virus safely.
₅ after seperating with umbrella, tommy continued mercenary work. he invented the close quarters quaranted battle zone, and all weapons associated. he remained a legend in certain circles, and whispers still echoed of an omen bringing death to his whole squad, every time.
