summary: you’ve caught the eye of the campus fuck boy and you could only think of one way to get out of it. word count: 2,178

a/n: it is. 2am. and i’ve been writing this since 12:40am with ‘our souls at night’ by sondia (itaewon class ost) in the background and idk man. i hope yall like this! i outlined the rest of the story two nights ago and, if i follow that, this has three more parts left. stay safe and healthy everyone. :DD

“I,” he begins, slipping beside you with a slight bounce and setting his tray on the table, “want to walk you home today.”

Ever since that last date, conversation between the two of you during lunch became more balanced. He shared more, prompted and unprompted, and you’ve been loving it; it not being the things he’s been revealing specifically, but more of just how comfortable you’ve become with each other.

A part of you is proposing you view your lunch breaks with him as dates – they were the same as your dates anyway – but, every time that part nagged, your cheeks flush and a ridiculous smile forms on your face. You’d push the thought away, though you know it’ll come back to bother you again soon.

“You want to walk me home?” Pointing at yourself with wide eyes, you would like to think you’re perfectly expressing your surprise and confusion.

Jaebeom nods once and begins to eat. “Not in the kinky pet play kind of way,” he says in between bites, making you frown at his eating figuring, “but the normal side-by-side type.”

“Would you be holding my hand?” you find yourself asking, and the alarms that set off in your head distracted you enough to hear him almost choke.

His hand lands on the table and he angles his upper body to face you, the look on his face incredulous. “Princess,” he breathes out, “perhaps you’ve fallen for me already?”

“Have you?” was the only thing you could think to reply, trying to buy some time for you to wrap up your internal reprimanding.

It had an effect on him though, and he grumbled, “That wasn’t the agreement.”

“Exactly,” you say, and you turn toward your food once more. “I just thought that was what you had in mind,” you explain, “Seeing as the agreement was to make me fall for you.”

“I didn’t think of it,” he says, “but, since you’ve generously introduced that sappy side of you, I guess I should use it to my advantage?”

You hit his upper arm and glare at him then. “Holding hands isn’t just ‘sappy,’” you say, defensive, “It’s a sweet expression of love.”

“Just meet me at the front after class,” he says and, with a playful grin, adds, “I’ll be waiting for your sappy explanation then.”

“I just told you it’s not sappy!” But he was already walking away, tray in his hands and a slight but noticeable bounce in his step. You watch him go, and you can’t help the fond smile that appears on your face at his little childish antics. He was far from the Jaebeom you first knew; he was no longer just the walking embodiment of lust.

He was – and this description is because you can no longer find a word or two in the dictionary that would perfectly apply – Lim Jaebeom.

“Uh, (Y/N)?”

You immediately tear your gaze away from the direction Jaebeom went and looked up. Standing there was Kim Yugyeom, in all his 6-feet glory, a shy smile on his face and, if you weren’t mistaken, a pale but rosy blush on his cheeks.

“Hey!” you greet brightly, because you could never resist the happy aura he always seemed to radiate. “Wanna sit?”

He looks around unsurely first but he ends up accepting your offer, though he sits stiffly. “I don’t want to bother you too much so I’ll make it quick,” he says, “but I heard Jaebeom-hyung say he’ll walk you home later?”

You nod, both in confirmation but also for him to go on. “Ah, I’m sorry,” he says next, averting your gaze, “but we all planned to practice our choreography later.”

“He dances?” You’re incredulous yet again and the man beside you nods.

“Yeah,” he answers in small font, “He must have forgotten.”

“Well, it’s okay!” you say, with a nonchalant wave of your hand even, “If you think I’ll resent you for this, you’re wrong,” you say with a stern ending before returning to your light tone, “Don’t worry about it!”

“Are you sure?” he asks, still sounding ashamed, “I’m really sorry.”

“You’re Yugyeom,” you correct, even though you knew you didn’t need to, and it makes his nose scrunch and his miserable puppy eyes narrow. “If you really feel bad, just send me a video of you guys dancing.”

“I will!” he says eagerly, jumping back up to aforementioned 6-feet glory. “Thank you, (Y/N)!” You smile at him one more time before he walks away.

Only for him to turn back and go, “And (Y/N)?” You raise your eyebrows at him to show you’re listening and he breaks into a little smile. “Hyung dances well.”

“Of course he does,” you mutter to yourself, but even your scoff at that was fond.

You don’t wait for Jaebeom as per Yugyeom’s information. You walk home as you usually do, hands in your pockets and an earphone in as you listen to your playlist for the month.

Then, you suddenly hear someone calling out for you.

Not having both earphones on gave you the advantage of still hearing the outside world and therefore becoming more aware of it; which is why you were able to turn to the direction of the sound, and you see Jaebeom running up to you.

“I told you to meet me at the front!” he pants angrily when he catches up, and you take a step back as if to give him the oxygen in the area you were standing in.

“Yugyeom told me you guys had to practice a choreo,” you say and, overtaken with concern, add, “Are you okay?”

“I was running,” he deadpans, “That’s not the physical I have a specialty in.” He manages a smirk, only to have it ruined by his panting.

“Catch your breath then,” you tell him and, in a softer tone, “You already caught me anyway.”

“Oh, did I really?” He raises an eyebrow at you, and he holds his smile this time. You roll your eyes at him but say nothing and watch over his recovery. “Okay,” he mutters, straightening and taking a deep breath, “I think we’re good to go.”

You walk together in silence; you don’t know what to say. It’s peaceful, though, not as awkward as you thought it’d be and, suddenly, he’s walking beside you. “I remember you promising me a defense for hand-holding,” he muses, and you look to each other at the same time.

“I didn’t promise you anything.”

“It was implied.”

One look at his smile and you give in with a sigh. “Fine, but only because hand-holding should be viewed as something more than just ‘sappy.’”

You reach for each other’s hand at the same time.

Your eyes had been watching the space between you to make sure you wouldn’t grab at air, and they widened at his movement, quick as it was. You were then given the pleasure to watch your hands connect for the first time, and the atmosphere was almost electric.

“I don’t like intertwining fingers,” he says, and your eyes move from your hands to his face, and you find him watching you. You blush upon realizing he might have been observing your earlier pause in shock, so you smile as best as you can. He looks away and continues walking, pulling you with him.

“Why?” you finally ask but he just shrugs.

“I just don’t,” he says, casting you a side glance, “Now for your defense?”

“You treat it like a thesis,” you huff, struggling to catch up with his long strides, “Slow down, will you? Or you won’t be able to hear the whole thing.”

“I still have practice,” he tells you, but he pauses and goes again at your pace.

“Holding hands,” you begin, raising your hands briefly, “gives you a sense of security.” He scoffs, you glare at him, and he says nothing. “Holding hands gives you reassurance. ‘I’m right here.’ That’s the message it gives. A hand holding yours can steady you when you’re off balance; it can pull you up or away from what may harm you; it can guide you when you can’t see.

“As long as you’re holding someone’s hand, you’ll never be alone,” you pause to look at him, “Got it?”

“It’s sweaty.”

“It brings warmth,” you counter, “It’s the physical heat you need on cold winters, but it also gives the warmth your heart needs.”

“Sex can do that,” he points out, an eyebrow raised, “Bring heat.”

“But does it do what I mentioned before heat?”

“When you’re with the right person, it does.”

“Can you testify to that?”

“Yes,” he says without hesitation. It’s shocking.

“Oh, really?” Jaebeom nods and even looks at you, letting you confirm with his eyes that he was telling the truth; and you’re put into even more disbelief.

“It was a long time ago,” he says nonchalantly, “We were both insecure but sex made us feel good about our bodies. When it’s just the two of us, we were secure despite our insecurities; and when we drift asleep after climax, the other in our arms reassures us that we aren’t alone. It kept me from doing a bunch of useless shit.

“I guess it still does. You know me as a fuck boy and I think that’s better than a drug addict or a criminal. The security I mentioned is still there, too.”

“But the reassurance?”

“I know I’m not alone in my bed.”

“You don’t feel empty?” you ask, “I mean, sure, you’re physically not alone but doesn’t your heart feel hollow without the intimacy sex should have?”

“I’ve been ignoring it for so long that it’s practically not even there.”

“But you admit that it is there?”

“I think we should stop here.” He wasn’t only referring to the conversation – you look around and realize you had arrived in front of your dorm building. Your eyes meet his and he hurriedly pulls his hand away from yours. “Thanks for explaining your side though. It’s cute.”

“Jaebeom–“

“Can I kiss you?” The sudden question promptly took your heart off any sympathetic feelings for him and had it racing miles per second. You’re quite sure you were gaping at him; it consoles you to see he’s unsure and uneasy as well, shifting his weight from one foot to another. Before you could react any more, he adds, “Just one kiss. Let me have a taste.”

“A taste?”

“Or you could view it the other way around,” he muses, a smirk overtaking his earlier uncertain features. “You can have a taste of what you’ve been miss –“

You place your lips on his aggressively, cutting him off because you didn’t want to hear the rest of the thought, and you pull away before he could respond. “There’s your kiss,” you say in a dismissive tone but he’s rooted to his place, and you don’t know if it’s out of shock or smugness.

He places both hands in his pockets and looks at the sky, exhaling before going, “Can I kiss you again?”

“AGAIN?”

“Sudden kisses are for guys who just want to get laid,” he reasons, “I want you to fall for me. That’s the mission you gave me, remember?”

“Asking me for a kiss won’t make me fall for you.”

“I had hoped the gentleman’s way would win you over,” he pouts, “Oh well.”

You remain quiet but, when he doesn’t go, you give in and sigh, “Yes. You may kiss me.”

Jaebeom gives you a small smile before he leans closer to you, a hand leaving his pocket to cup your face and bring your lips to his. He completes the step and his hand moves to your nape, the other to the small of your back, and you find yourself holding onto his broad shoulders, holding on to this physical reality as his kiss brings you to another a world, a world where there is only the two of you and this feeling.

This feeling of completion, satisfaction; this feeling your hand-holding could only dream of bringing.

Jaebeom kisses you, lips soft but rough against yours, almost as if he wanted to devour you; and you were letting him. He presses you to his body yet the placement of his hands made you feel like porcelain. He kisses you, consuming you and your thoughts and making the feeling of him all you could focus on. He kisses you until you run out of breath and have to pull away, but he doesn’t let you get too far.

He leans his forehead against yours and looks into your trembling eyes, barely registering how quickly you were inhaling and exhaling, trying to fill your lungs with oxygen to satiate the fire he had started. When he finds his voice, the corners of his lips quirk up into a smile. “Thank you.”

“For giving you a taste?”

“For letting me try.” When he presses his lips to your forehead and closes his eyes, he realizes this all felt just right.

“I’ll see you tomorrow.”
