I have actually included so many different musicians in my discussions about the American rock groups from the 80's that I can't really say what their most common characteristics might have been. Sure, the official moniker of New Wave does put them all under the same umbrella, yet I would dare to suggest power pop might have been a better term. Then again, what could that be? The nebulous term doesn't really define anything, though you can usually locate the musicians of the idiom. I mean, listen to The Romantics to notice the way the guitars and the vocal harmonies update what The Beach Boys did in the 60's, but observe how the production favours the grit associated with the punk ethos. True, we have only met one example of power pop, there are many variants of the latter.

Lost 80's Live at Mountain Winery
I love First Wave on Sirius XM. Full stop.  It’s my default station in the car, and I listen to it often at home. The music makes me happy, makes me wistful, gives me great memories from my youth. But weirdly, I don’t remember being that in tune with the First Wave blend of music during my youth. The Police were my favorite band in the 80s, sure, but I spent a lot of the 80s listening to music from the 50s and 60s, along with common 80s pop and whatever played on MTV. So why the station reminds me of my youth is a bit of mystery.
When I saw the lineup for the Lost 80s Live show, I was all-in immediately.  The show featured Trans-X, Musical Youth, Shannon, Stacey Q, Animotion, Naked Eyes, Missing Persons, Wally Palmar (of the Romantics), General Public, Wang Chung, with closing by Flock of Seagulls. I even dragged the wife, who has no interest whatsoever in 80s alternative. We had a little quid pro quo date weekend. Lost 80s Live for me, some college football featuring her alma mater for her. It was a pretty great weekend.
On the whole, the bands sounded terrible. Many voices were shot, some relied too much on the backing track. And I loved every minute of it. The wife said she had rarely ever seen me so happy.
Trans-X was unfamiliar, and unworthy of comment. Musical Youth used the backing track of their youth voices for large parts of Pass the Dutchie. I had no idea who Shannon was, but then she belted out the anthemic Let The Music Play. By belted out, I mean she relied on the backing track while shimmying around in an age-inappropriate dress. Stacy Q played 1 more song than everyone else, while only having one recognizable song. Still dressed like a teeny bopper in a lacy skirt, she also let the backing track do a  lot of work for her.
I know this sounds like a lot of bitching, but it was fun. You simply can’t get sick of someone if they are out after three songs.
Things picked up with Animotion, who were a lot of fun and sounded pretty good. Obsession is definitely a song I liked in the 80s, and it was great to see it live. Naked Eyes’ Promises Promises and There’s Always Something There To Remind Me sounded awful, but had the crowd dancing nonetheless. Missing Persons Walking in LA also got the crowd moving, although I never cared for that song.
The next 2 acts were the high point for me.
From my youth, I remember liking The Romantics’ Talking In Your Sleep. In college, however, I fell in love with What I Like About You. There was an 80s alternative station in Washington DC in the early 90s that played a lot of music that filled the early 90s for me: 10,000 Maniacs, Kate Bush, Crowded House. One day, they played What I Like About You, at the time over a decade old, yet I had never heard it before. When I got back to Berkeley, I frequented the local record stores, scouring the bins for a copy of the album that contained that song. I never found it, however, so I had to resign myself to some commercials that leveraged the song, and then, eventually, with some random 80’s alternative collection CD that included it.
The Romantics’ guitar-heavy, three-song set was an absolute blast. Like the others before, the voices were raspy, but the music was on point and dynamic. What I Like About You came the closest, throughout the night, of tearing the joint apart. The crowd was into it, at full roar, and people were dancing in the aisles.
Dave Waikling and General Public were an exception for the evening, in that they sounded fantastic. Most of Waikling’s band were youngsters, on point and in tune with the music. And Waiklint himself sounded pretty damn good. Tenderness was a blast. I liked their set so much, I went home and bought English Beat tickets a few weeks hence.
Wang Chung remains stupid. I don’t understand the appeal of that band, but appeal to the crowd they did.
Flock of Seagulls closed the show. The band became a joke in the 90's based largely on their hair in the I Ran video. Adam Sandler probably started it in Wedding Singer, with the same gag rehashed in countless other movies and TV shows. I remember I Ran from back in the day, as one of the many songs on the various K-Tel albums I bought back then (more on K-tel in a future post). But First Wave has taught me that they weren’t a 1 hit wonder, but rather a 3 or 4 hit wonder. I Ran closed the show, but Wishing and Space Age Love Song are still fresh for me, putting a smile on my face, and a dance in my shoes.
My one complaint is that I only just discovered this amazing retro tour in 2023, now in its 21st year in existence. And the guy who coordinates the show kept complaining about how tired he was and how ready he was to stop putting on the show. I can only hope it was just talk from the end of a grueling tour. But if it is not, I will continue to turn to First Wave as I start my car for my joyful, wistful flashbacks to an undermined time.

Time for your Rock Report
Queen recently shared a new music video for "Face It Alone," lending a powerful visual dimension to the rock band's great "lost" song. "The intention was to create, despite how the lyrics might be interpreted, an upbeat video that celebrated the fact that the period during which this song was recorded was one of the most prolific and cohesive in the band's history," Queen said in a statement. Originally released on October 13, "Face It Alone" is the first new Queen song to feature the late Freddie Mercury's vocals in eight years, described by Brian May as "beautiful and touching." "The meaning of the song has been interpreted that when something catastrophic occurs in your life, your instinct is to surround yourself with what is dearest and most important to you," said Queen's content creator, Simon Lupton. "Face It Alone "features on Queen The Miracle Collector's Edition box set, which is set to release on November 18.
The Eagles have added five more dates to their "Hotel California" tour, which kicked off back in 2019.
The iconic band, comprised of Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmit and Vince Gill, will now perform for five additional dates, which will start February 19 at Moda Center in Portland, Oregon, and conclude on March 3 at Pechanga Arena in San Jose, California. The band will be playing their 1976 LP classic album in its entirety with an accompanying orchestra and choir and then returning for another full set featuring the band's greatest hits. Closest to home for the Extended 'Hotel California' tour will be the gig Feb. 19 - Portland, OR, Moda Center
Alice Cooper's 20th annual "Christmas Pudding Concert" will feature Sammy Hagar, Rob Zombie and other artists. The concert, presented by the Norelli family foundation, is set to take place on December 3 at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona. Gin Blossoms, Sixwire, Wally Palmar of The Romantics, comedian Jim Breuer, the Solid Rock Dancers, The Bucket Brigade, and the winners of this year's "Proof Is in the Pudding" music and dance competition are also listed in the lineup of performers. Alice Cooper's annual Christmas Pudding Fundraiser is renowned as one of Phoenix's signature holiday events.

Album Review: The Empty Hearts “The Second Album”
What got my attention about the supergroup The Empty Hearts is guitarist Elliot Easton of The Cars. As I’ve mentioned many times, Cars fans aren’t just fans, they are fanatics! I was truly honored to have had Cars keyboardist Greg Hawkes as a featured interview in my documentary Life on the V: The Story of V66 and since its release Cars fans who never even heard of the music video channel V66 viewed my documentary because they heard The Cars had something to do with it! My point is, being a fan of The Cars isn’t just about being a fan of The Cars collectively, but what they have done outside of The Cars. In the case of Easton, he is a guitar virtuoso, who released a solo album in the mid-80s, was a member of Creedence Clearwater Revisited, and had his band Elliot Easton’s Tiki Gods. Check out the Tiki Gods’ song “Monte Carlo Nights” on the Jackie Brown soundtrack BTW. But beyond short-lived The New Cars in the mid-00s (which was just Easton and Hawkes from the original Cars) and the final Cars tour and album in 2011, he’s laid low in terms of releasing new music. Which is what made The Empty Hearts something to pay attention to immediately.
Tumblr media
The Second Album cover
I know I just wrote a lot about Easton, but this is definitely a supergroup for a reason. Blondie drummer Clem Burke is a fantastic drummer (I was lucky enough to see Blondie in 1999), who also was a member of The Romantics from 1990-2004, and has always had a punk spirit. Burke’s Romantics bandmate Wally Palmar on vocals shows he’s more than just the guy who sang “Talking in Your Sleep”! He also was a part of Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band (I saw him with the All Starr Band in 2010). Bassist Andy Babiuk was in The Chesterfield Kings (I saw them at Little Steven’s Underground Garage Festival in 2004...or at least I think I saw them, there were too many bands that day to keep track of). The Empty Hearts released their first album in 2014 and it made enough of a splash that they have returned with The Second Album which is being released Friday on Wicked Cool Records (Little Steven’s label).
Tumblr media
The band poolside
The album is straight up 1960s garage rock from start to finish! It’s even produced by Ed Stasium (producer of The Ramones, Talking Heads, Living Colour). It fits perfectly with Little Steven’s garage rock passion. There are influences galore throughout, but you can hear each of these musicians shining through. The entire band has a real fondness for 60s rock and it shows. The highlight of the album is “Remember Days Like These”, which features special guest Ringo Starr on drums (Palmar’s bandmate). How cool to hear Sir Ringo drumming in this band! This album as a whole might not grab you the way a Cars or Blondie album does, but give it a chance. The more you listen it gets better and you find yourself humming along!
