Veggie chilli with all the sad veg from the bottom of our fridge! Chilli is great for using up random bits of veg because it's so tasty and all the flavours get merged in there. This one-pot meal is also super budget friendly because it uses cheap veg and beans as protein which are way cheaper and better for the planet than meat. Here I added - 🥕🌰🍅🍠🫑🌽 plus garlic, tomato paste, broccoli stems, and some wilted spring onions with plenty of spices, a bit of water, and a teaspoon of veggie stock powder. I'm eating it with the crumbly bits from the end of a bag of corn chips for added crunch and carbs 💪 If you're low on time this is also super easy to prep with a food processor and you don't need to peel anything! #wholefoods #wholeplantfoods #mexicanfood #mexicaninspired #texmex #nachos #chillibeans #budgetmeals #zerowastedublin #zerowastekitchen #zerowasteliving #zerofoodwaste #zerowasteireland #ZeroWasteIRL (at Dublin, Ireland) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfMGgLOMwkh/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

LOW WASTE SNACKS
One of my absolute favorite #packagefree snacks is stove top popcorn. Movie nights at home, a quick snack while I’m drawing, I love a bowl (to myself, let’s be honest) of popcorn loaded up with some flaky salt, paprika, and a palmful of nutritional yeast. It’s a relatively guilt-free snack you can doctor up with whatever seasonings you have on hand. I’m a dry popcorn kind of gal but to each their own, we’re not here to judge.
I usually find my kernels in the bulk bin of my local grocery store, which makes this a bin to bowl plastic free snack experience. (Reminder to bring your own container!) If you can’t find these at your local grocery store, a conventional packaged bag of popcorn is a much better alternative to several plastic wrapped, microwave bags coated with things we probably shouldn’t be eating on a regular basis.
Super simple stove top popcorn
Ingredients: - 2 tbsp olive oil - 1/2 cup popcorn kernels - handful of salt, nutritional yeast, pumpkin spice, etc - seasonings to your liking To-do’s: 1. Pour oil into a heavy bottomed, medium size pan and turn on medium heat. Add in a kernel and cover with lid. You’ll wait for the kernel to pop before you add in the rest.  2. Once that kernel has popped pour in the rest and cover with lid. Give the pot a little shake to let the kernels distribute evenly around bottom of the pan. Let sit as kernels begin to pop. Once they are popping, ever so slightly crack the lid to allow steam to escape (this will keep the popcorn from getting soggy.) 3. Continue cooking until popping slows to a single pop every few seconds or so, anywhere from 1 - 3 minutes. Turn off and remove from heat. Pour popcorn into bowl and add in addition seasoning! Feel free to get creative here and try out new flavor combinations.
(Note: Make sure to never leave your oil unattended! If you ever smell burning or see smoke turn off the heat and take your pot off the burner. Leave the lid on and put the pot in the sink to cool down.)
I also like to save any unpopped kernels to use next time! I can’t be the only one!
What’s your fav popcorn topping?? #closedloopcooking

Avoiding food waste
Tumblr media
Last week I'was doing a cleanup of kitchen cupboards with my family. We haven't done this in a long time, so it was important to take care of that to avoid waste of overdue food. As we all know hunger problem is big even in highly developed countries, so wasting food due to laziness or neglect isn't fair and shouldn't take place.
We started with taking out everything that wan in our pantry. Our table was covered in all kinds of food. It looked like cleaning with Mari Kondo, the only thing that was different was the question asked. Instead of asking if the food brings us joy we were looking at expiration date. Luckily we had very little overdue items and all of them were still edible. After organizing everything by date, we decided to allocate all the items with close deadline into one container that is distinguished by its color. Other foods we organized by categories: cereal and pasta, canned, flours and other loose ingredients, sweets and lastly tea and coffee. After cleaning shelves and drawers, we put everything on its place. The last thing that was left to clean up was fridge. It isn't as easy to organize as pantry. Items that are in the fridge or refrigerator are more likely to go bad. We have made general review of things that we have frozen and now instead of buying new, we are eating what we have. This way nothing goes to waste and when the fridge is empty we will be able to defrost it, clean everything and stock up on all we need again.
Tumblr media
The important part of this clean up process is making list. As you clean you will notice the lack of certain things, maybe you have many items of the same kind of food that you thought will be useful but you don't eat — write it down next time you're shopping list will be more personalized and this as well will reduce your food waste. It all seems easy (and it is) but from my experience I know, that we aren't thinking about what we have in our pantries. We take what we have on hand without looking on expiring date, so this kind of clean up gives you freedom for doing that knowing that what you have on hand is the quickest one to overdue.

Chocolate gone white and crumbly? It's still good to eat! And if the texture or look puts you off, it's still perfect for baking or melting. I had 2 slabs of chocolate that was posted to me and it melted and solidified at least once on the journey. The texture was a bit weird so today my housemate and I made choc chip #cookies with it! 10/10 flavour 🍪♥️ Fun facts - The white film does not mean the #chocolate is moldy or has gone bad. It’s actually just a scientific process called “chocolate bloom”. There are two types of this bloom: sugar bloom and fat bloom. Sugar bloom happens when moisture comes in contact with the chocolate - it dissolves the sugar crystals on the chocolate’s surface, leaving a white, powdery look. Fat bloom occurs due to improper storing conditions, dramatic changes in temperature, or a poor tempering process. This bloom will give the chocolate a powdery, white-gray appearance and leave the bar soft in texture. You're welcome 😁👩‍🔬 #chocolatechipcookies #lovefoodhatewaste #nofoodwaste #LessWaste #wasteless #zerowaste #zerowastehome #zerowastekitchen #zerowasteireland #zerowastedublin #zerowasteirl (at Dublin, Ireland) https://www.instagram.com/p/CePRAAyN1VT/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
