Prodigy Healer. 5
Story: 5
Acting: 10
Chemistry: 10
Comparable to: Love Better then Immortality (cdrama ) Mr Fox and Miss Rose
Nine out of ten dramas if Rosy Zhao is in it you’re usually going to find yourself watching a drama where she’s from the future and travels to a fictional/historical world. She’s the cdrama queen of these. With this one, I have to say this isn’t her best one. Despite saying that it’s still an all right show. Yes the cgi isn’t that great, the storyline is same ol’ same ol’ fairly cheesy and draggy. Acting is fine, it’s really just an all right forgettable drama with a terrible ending.

CDrama Year in Review 2023
I'm still very much a CDrama beginner--I just started watching them in the summer of 2022--but since this is the first year I got into them in earnest, I figured I might as well do a year in review a la @dangermousie (whose lists I have found incredibly helpful in deciding which CDramas I really, really need to go back and watch as part of my CDrama education--so thank you!). So, without further adieu, here is my ranking of 2023 CDramas, in order of least enjoyed to most enjoyed*.
(See also: KDrama Year in Review 2023)
*Disclaimer: *not* a measure of objective quality
10. Royal Rumours: This drama was not great? Meng Zi Yi and Jeremy Tsui were fun, but the story started out messy and got messier. For some reason I still finished it, I think because I had a lingering cold and it was all my brain could handle at the time *shrug*
9. Gone with the Rain: I actually really enjoyed this one! The pacing was inconsistent, but Zhang Nan was fun as the irreverent Mo Xi, and we love a grizzled general. Special shout to the teacher who was not actually evil, just a sad lesbian whose gf disappeared on her
8. Love You Seven Times: Intriguing concept, not a strong enough FL to carry it through. The reincarnation stuff really worked for me at first, especially in their first mortal tribulation (as people, not CGI animals), but I got tired of it pretty quickly. I admit, the gifs of Ding Yu Xi as a sexy cat demon *did* pull me back in, but not enough for me to actually finish the thing, alas
7. Destined/Chang Feng Du: Started out really strong, and then stalled out on me. I think I only got up to about episode 22 or so, after their epic desert crossing and new start in a new state--they lost all narrative momentum for me there. I stopped watching and then just...didn't start again. I do, however, remain a big Bai Jing Ting fan, and will be keeping on eye out for whatever he does next
6. Hidden Love: (Contemporary) Age gap romances are hit or miss for me, but Zhao Lu Si absolutely stole/carried the show for me in this one. Although more fun imo when the main couple are in the the will-they-won't-they phase than in the family melodrama after they get together, still the only contemporary CDrama to get me to give it a go this year--and I'm glad I did
5. My Journey to You: Featuring my favorite murder girlies Esther Yu as Yun Wei Shan and Lu Yu Xiao as Shanguan Qian! Gorgeous costumes and sets, sweeping cinematography, and plot that kept me on the edge of my seat. Full disclosure, I have not actually watched the last two episodes because I got busy and then saw weird chatter about them, so I have no comment on the allegedly weird ending
4. Till the End of the Moon: Look, I know the ending wasn't ideal, but for the majority of its run, this drama owned my entire soul. It also introduced me to Bai Lu as Li Su Su, who inspired my first actual tumblr post (that wasn't a reblog) because I was so obsessed with her. And everyone knows that Tantai Jin is the CDrama ML of the year. 10/10, no regrets at letting it take over my life (and the OST my Spotify) from April to May of this year
3. The Story of Kunning Palace: More Bai Lu is always a good thing, and she's extra fun here as the transmigrated former evil empress and totally-over-your-nonsense Xiang Xue Ning here. The reverse haremness of it all totally shows why Bai Lu is the chemistry queen, especially with the princess (Liu Xie Ning) and cranky, morally grey, would-fail-gym-class strategist Xie Wie (Zhang Ling He). So glad this drama made it out of the CDrama vault and didn't languish indefinitely in censorship hell
2. A Journey to Love: Finished this one two days ago as of this writing and am still not normal about it. Ren Ruyi (Liu Shi Shi) and Ning Yuan Zhou (Liu Yu Ning) lead an exceptionally strong ensemble cast in this wuxia that explores the complicated relationships between love, duty, loyalty, loneliness, and companionship. Ruyi and Yuan Zhou are far and away one of my fave OTPs of the year, but just as compelling are the relationships between friends/brothers/fellow assassins Yu Shisan, Yuan Lu (ugh my heart), Qian Zhou, and Sun Lang. This drama definitely has one of the strongest ensemble casts of the year. And the character growth of Yang Ying from little princess abandoned in the cold palace to who she becomes by the end will stick with me for a long time. Plus another 10/10 OST!
1. Lost You Forever S1: I'm not normally a reverse harem girl, but the longing, loss, and hard resolve portrayed to perfection by Yang Zi as Xiao Yao really did it for me here. This whole drama struck an emotional chord for me, and where TTEOTM consumed my soul, LYF took over my heart. Xiao Yao's relationships with her power hungry, overprotective cousin Cang Xuan; hot snake demon Xiang Liu/playboy archery shufu Feng Feng Bei; and perfectly devoted Tushan Jing are all equally compelling to me, and while I may know who she ends up with in the end, who I *think* she should be with changes based on who's on screen at any given time. And A'Nian, my favorite bratty princess who really just needs some strong parenting, holds a special place in my heart. I know we may never get S2, and even if we do, censorship means it probably won't be what the drama makers are capable of, but I'm so glad for this little piece of absolute perfection. And, again, a top notch OST!
Fave Drama: Lost You Forever, by just a hair over A Journey to Love. See above.
Least Fave Drama: Royal Rumours--truly why did I finish this, what was past me thinking
Biggest Disappointment: 2023 is also the year I read Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir, my very first CNovel! But then I didn't even bother checking out its adaptation, Romance of a Twin Flower, because it got rid of everything that made the novel such an addicting read, including a brilliant, strategic, ice cold FL and an ML who actually kind of sucked at the beginning, only to grow on you very, very slowly over time. I'm grateful that the chatter around the drama is what brought the novel to my attention, but other than that, hard pass.
Favorite Male Character: Lots of good ones this year, but I'm gonna go with Cang Xuan (Zhang Wan Yi) from Lost You Forever. The conflict he faces between getting enough power to protect the people he loves the most and that power making him incompatible with those loved ones is so compelling, and his yearning for Xiao Yao even when she's right in front of him is wrenching. Full disclosure, I also just really love the sound of his voice
Tumblr media
Favorite Female Character: This could easily have gone to Li Susu (TTEOTM), Xiao Yao (LYF), or Ren Ruyi (AJTL), but I'm gonna go with Bai Lu's Xiang Xue Ning in The Story of Kunning Palace. Something I really loved about this character was just how jaded Xue Ning really was, even in her second go round at life. Yeah, she wants to make amends for the harm done in her previous rise to power, but that has hardly turned her into a good--or even pleasant--person. Instead, she's incredibly skeptical and still plays most things ice cold, especially with her family. As a bonus, we got plenty of Bai Lu's fantastic side eye as she basically had to do high school all over again when she gets called into the palace despite her very best efforts not to be.
Tumblr media
Favorite Ship: Ren Ruyi and Yuan Zhao from A Journey to Love have got to be it. They balance each other out so well, and over the course of the drama, learn to communicate effectively with each other whenever they have a problem. They also recognize that not all problems can be solved by ~love~, which makes their relationship even more compelling when they decide to prioritize each other in a way that respects what the other wants from life.
Tumblr media
Favorite Secondary Ship: Little princess Yang Ying and Yuan Lu absolutely broke stole my heart in A Journey to Love. Doomed love even more than the main OTP, these two's youthful romance was such much fun to watch, especially as they egged their respective mentors on in their own romance. Yang Ying's recognition that her first love did not have to be her only love is also something I always love to see, even as it broke my heart that (spoiler) she and Yuan Lu never really had a chance at an HEA. Their relationship really exemplified a key theme of this drama: that you should love the people you love while they're still with you because tomorrow is never promised.
Tumblr media
Non-2023 Dramas that I Watched: Two non-2023 dramas I watched that deserve a special shout out are Love and Redemption and The Sword and the Brocade. Love and Redemption prepared me to really appreciate the big swings that Till the End of the Moon took, and The Sword and the Brocade went a little way to filling the Story of Ming Lan shaped hole in my heart. The Sword and the Brocade also had absolutely searing critique of the concubine system, even as it featured one of the most genuinely good-hearted FLs I've seen. Would recommend both!
Most Looking Forward To: Yes, I'm a sucker and the censors (not to mention the characters) will probably break my heart, but I'm still crossing my fingers that Lost You Forever S2 will live up to the promise of part one. See above: still a CDrama beginner, have not yet had all the optimism knocked out of me. Sue me.

A Brief Discussion of Cheng Style Baguazhang
by Liu Jingru
Wuhun Magazine, 1999 vol. 1 no. 127
translated by Joseph Crandall
Baguazhang is one of the more famous of the traditional Chinese martial arts. It has distinctive practice skill methods and its palm method changes unfathomably. It has a good balanced reputation in the martial community. From the time of Qing Chengfeng (1851-1862), when Mr. Dong Haichuan introduced it until today, it is daily practiced and enjoyed by martial artists in China and overseas.
Mr. Dong Haichuan had many disciples. Yin Fu, Ma Weiqi, Shi Jidong, Song Changrong, Cheng Tinghua, Liang Zhenpo, Liu Fengchun, Zhang Zhankui, Fan Zhiyong, and Liu Baozhen were very famous. In terms of skill, achievements, dedication, and fame, Mr. Yin Fu and Mr. Cheng Tinghua come to the forefront. Although the principles and methods of their skill in Baguazhang was the same, after many years of training and teaching, each one gradually developed their own special style. These have become known as Yin Style Baguazhang and Cheng Style Baguazhang.
Mr. Cheng Tinghua, also called Yingfang was from Shen County in Hebei. He was born in 1848 and died in 1900. He was 52 years old. In Mr. Cheng’s early years he practiced Shuaijiao and Shaolin. As a result of someone’s recommendation, he asked to join Dong Haichuan’s school. He deeply got the pure essence and spirit of Baguazhang. Mr. Cheng was a large and strong man. He had an eyeglasses shop in Beijing. Therefore people all called him “Spiritual Strength Eyeglasses Cheng”.
In 1900, the Eight Countries Allied Armies invaded Beijing. Mr. Cheng wanted to stop a unit of the German army who were bullying the peaceful populace. He engaged the German army unit and was shot and killed.
Mr. Cheng had many students. The most famous were: Feng Junyi, Zhang Yukui, Kan Lingfeng, Li Wenpiao, Zhou Xiang, Zhang Yongde, Sun Lutang, Yang Mingshan, Guo Tongde, Liu Bin, Cheng Yougong, Cheng Youlong, and Cheng Youxin. They all made outstanding contributions to the development of Cheng Style Baguazhang.
Feng Junyi, was good at using the leg method. Men called him “Flying Legs Feng Junyi.” Zhang Yukui, was from a miller’s family. Men called him “Miller Zhang”. Kan Lingfeng men called “Kan Eight”. Zhang Yongde, sold boots. Hedid not know how to write, and often asked people to write letters for him. He never brushed pictures, only boots. Men called him “Boots Zhang.” Zhou Xiang’s face had pockmarks. Men called him “Pockmarks Zhou”. Guo Tongde sold steamed buns to make a living. Men called him “Steamed Buns Guo.” Yang Mingshan first studied with Mr. Cheng to make eyeglasses. Then he asked his teacher if he could also study Bagua. Liu Bin was Mr. Cheng’s youngest disciple. The above men all had very pure skills and were famous in the martial community.
Li Wenbiao, also called Guangpu, was among Cheng Tinghua’s most outstanding students. He was big and tall. His eyes were bright and his spirit was awesome. He was burly with enormous strength. He deeply got the pure understanding of Baguazhang. Li first followed Supervisor of the Military Xu Shichang and went to the Northeast. In Fengtian he was appointed to seek out foreign spies. At that time, many martial artists, like Warlord Li, Spiritual Wrestler Ji Si, Pigua Li Baorong, and Mr. Cheng’s nephew Cheng Yougong in the troops under his command. Later he held office with President Cao Kun in Beijing. Within his troops there were no less than ten of his Baguazhang classmates and some juniors, like Miller Zhang’s student Cui Yugui, Cheng Youlong’s student He Jun, Zhu WenBao’s student Liu Zhigang, and Cheng Tianhua’s student Liu Zitai. When Feng Yuyang rebelled against President Cao Kun, Li was killed in the confusion and looting. Master Li was famous for his depressing palm (ta zhang). No man dared to lightly test him. At that time, the martial community universally praised him.
Mr. Sun Lutang followed Guo Yunshen’s student Li Kuiyuan and studied Xingyi Quan. Then he asked Mr. Cheng Tinghua to teach him Bagua. Later he met Hao Weijin. Because his knowledge was already comparatively deep, he thereupon studied Taijiquan. Mr. Sun purely studied these three styles of martial art. He deeply got every nuance and fused them together. He authored The Real Meaning of Fighting, The Study of Xingyi Quan, The Study of Baguazhang, The Study of Taijiquan, and The Study of Bagua Sword, to be left for future generations. Mr. Sun held a teaching post at the Nanjing Central Kuoshu Institute. He was famous all over, and was one of the great martial arts teachers of his time.
Cheng Yougong, also known as Xiangting, was Mr. Cheng Tinghua’s nephew. When he first practiced Baguazhang, he would get up when the rooster crowed and practice assiduously. One time, in the Eyeglass shop, the disciples were all walking. Eyeglasses Cheng was in the central room drinking tea. Mr. Yougong was in the courtyard practicing the Turning Palms. Mr. Cheng not speak and Yougong was not allowed to stop or pause. In three years Yougong progressed greatly. When he followed Master Li Wenbiao in Fengtian looking for spies, he would practice the palms with a ten pound iron staff. He was never idle. Daily, by himself, would go out and arrest bandits. At that time, the bandits without a doubt all heard his name and lost their courage. He had a position in Headquarters Indoctrination Hall of the Northeast Army of Zhang Zuolin. He taught Baguazhang to Zhang Xueliang.
Cheng Youlong, also called Haiting, was Mr. Cheng Tinghua’s oldest son. When he was young he received Eyeglasses Cheng’s parental teachings. After he lost his father, he practiced his skills even more diligently. He later studied Taijiquan with Mr. Yang Jianhou and blended the two arts to make “Bagua Taiji Quan.” He was fair-skinned, and his nature was forthright and frank. He had a scholar’s air. He was pure in Baguazhang. He was also an expert in drawing and calligraphy. He extensively researched the principles of fighting. He also researched every nuance of the Paired Baguazhang Method and Bagua Meridian Mandarin Duck Axes. He died because he smoked too much. All of his classmates deeply mourned him.
Cheng Youxin, also called Shouting, was Mr. Cheng Tinghua’s second son. When Cheng Tinghua left this world, Youxin was only nine years old. He really never got his father’s true teachings, but learned from Cheng Tinghua’s students. They all gave him instruction and he reached a very high level. As a result of this, the instruction that he received came from many teachers. He did not receive one formal Bagua transmission. Nevertheless his skill caught up to that of his older brother, though it did not surpass it. Mr. Youxin was short and small. He was expert in lower basin stepping. Men called him ‘Cuo Ye’ (Short Uncle). The sum of his studies was his 64 Palms, only he was closefisted in teaching it. Only Mr. Liu Tanfeng got his teachings.
Principle Characteristics of Cheng Style Baguazhang
When practicing, you must walk the circle. Each circle is made up of eight steps with the idea of the feet stepping on the eight trigrams. Walk using the mud treading steps. The inside step moves straight. The outside foot slightly hooks inwards. Walking is done along the edge of the circle and is divided into upper middle and lower basins.
When the hands go out, you must have one palm reach out to the front and one palm defend in the rear. The fingers of both palms point upwards. The thumbs are open wide. The tiger’s mouths are round and push out. The remaining fingers are slightly curved. The fingers can be slightly spread or you can have the fourth and fifth fingers sticking together. The palms face the front and are naturally concave. The form of the back of the palm is like a tile. The heel of the palm pushes out. The palm strength is vigorous. It is called “Dragon Claw Palm.” The basic palm formation above is from Mr. Dong Haichuan.
The steps in Yin Style Baguazhang are small, lively, and tend towards a natural step. In Cheng Style Baguazhang, the steps are slightly larger. They change and transform at many points. Cheng Style Baguazhang is especially good at using large swing and hook steps. This is because Cheng Tinghua practiced Shuaijiao in his early days. The gripping and throwing method was blended into his Baguazhang. The swing step and hook step are truly transformed to cause tripping.
The outgoing hand in Yin Style Baguazhang is direct, with particular attention paid to suddenness, crispness, firmness, quickness, and abundant springy shaking strength. Men call it hard palm. Cheng Style Baguazhang pays attention to the interplay of hard and soft, with a lot of spiraling energy. It often has touching, sticking, continuously following, neutralizing, issuing and releasing, all coordinated together.
Cheng Style Baguazhang mainly uses hidden legs. It is very good at using the tips of the foot. When doing piercing palm, the heart of the palm faces upwards. The five fingers point to the front. The pierce goes out under the front arm. The palm method has cloud, thrust between, pierce, and strike... only it mainly uses push, uphold, pull aside, lead, parry, hook, split and advance.
Cheng Style Baguazhang is very good at holding three forms concurrently: Walking like a dragon. Turning like a monkey. Changing postures like an eagle. Sometimes it is tight and compact. Sometimes it is big and open. It is nimble, circular, and lively. It stretches out everywhere. It is especially good at twisting, wrapping, drilling, and overturning. The turning palms are like twisting rope.
The Palm Method Routines of Cheng Style Baguazhang
Mr. Cheng Tinghua had many students. For the most part they all had skill before they sought instruction from the master. Some of the students only studied a few palms before they left the teacher. They gained considerable fame among their contemporaries. Consequently by the time we get to the fourth generation, the names of the practice methods of the basic eight palms, eight big palms and their routines are no longer the same. Cheng Youlong’s student Sun Xikun wrote Genuine Transmissions of Baguazhang. In it his Eight Big Palms are: Single Change Palm, Double Change Palm, Flowing Posture Palm, Three Piercing Palms, Grinding Body Palm, Overturning Body Palm, and Returning Body Palm. Mr. Cheng Youxin was Cheng Youlong’s little brother. His Eight Big Palms do not have Three Piercing Palms, but instead have Turning Body Palm. My teacher, Luo Xingwu, asked Cheng Yougong about this business. Mr. Cheng Yougong said, “The Eight Big Palms must contain Turning Body Palm, and do not have Three Piercing Palms. Maybe Sun Xikun only had seven palms. Maybe he kept one palm secret and used Three Piercing Palms as a substitute.” Saying this, he immediately demonstrated Turning Body Palm. Therefore my teacher’s Turning Body Palm is from Cheng Yougong’s tradition and not Li Wenbiao’s teachings.
The Palm Method Routines of Cheng Style Baguazhang are:
Basic Eight Palms: Fierce Tiger Leaves the Mountain, Big Peng Spreads it Wings, Lion Opens it Big Mouth, White Ape Offers the Peach, Embrace the Moon to the Center of the Chest, Black Bear Searching Arms, Point to Heaven Insert to Ground, and Green Dragon Searching Claws.
Each palm has its own special energy and strength. Each palm has its own functional method. These are not just sections of Bagua’s palm method, but they are also the foundation of the Eight Big Palms and the 64 Palms. Therefore they are called the Basic Palms.
The Eight Big Palms: Single Change Palm, Double Change Palm, Flowing Posture Palm, Behind the Body Palm, Turning Body Palm, Grinding Body Palm, Overturning Body Palm, and Returning Body Palm.
The Eight Big Palms are not only the core routines for practicing Baguazhang skills, but they each also possess eight distinctive striking methods.
Single Change Palm is the outgoing hand already striking. All of a sudden it appears and it is over. Double Change Palm is a continuation of Single Change Palm, doing two or three strikes in a row. Flowing Posture Palm goes in the same direction as the opponent’s incoming hand. The energy and strength flow with the posture and yet strike. Behind the Body Palm goes contrary to the opponent’s incoming hand’s direction, contrary to energy and strength and yet strike. Turning Body Palm is turning to the left and right in front of the enemy. It has the left rotating and right turning striking methods. Grinding Body Palm uses toeing in and toeing out stepping in place in front of the enemy. It uses close-in striking. Overturning Body Palm uses suddenly turning over the body to strike in adverse circumstances. Returning Body Palm uses striking and then immediately walking away. Suddenly you turn back and strike again. Thereby defeating your opponent by a surprise move. Thus, the saying: “If you have Single , then you must have Double. If you have Flowing then you must have Behind. Turning Body Palm rotates left and turns right. Grinding Body Palm is not far from the enemy’s body. Overturning Body Palm is like the overturning body of a python, it defeats ones opponent by a surprise move. Returning Body Palm strikes and then walks away, walks and also returns. It is like a sparrowhawk turning back its head to grips its body.”
64 Palms: Though not included in the Eight Big Palms, each palm again adds seven palms. Together they are called Single Change Eight Palms. These are eight kinds strikes having the outgoing hand striking suddenly and being suddenly done. Double Change Eight Palms continues from Single Change Palm. It has eight types of strikes done two or three times in succession. Flowing Posture Eight Palms has eight types of strikes moving in the same direction as the opponent’s incoming hand’s direction. Behind the Body Eight Palms has eight types of strikes that go contrary to the opponent’s incoming hand’s direction, energy, and strength. Turning Body Eight Palms has eight types of strikes done now to the left and now to the right in front of the enemy. Grinding Body Eight Palms has eight types of strikes toeing in and toeing out in place close to the body in front of the enemy. Overturning Body Eight Palms has eight types of suddenly overturning the body to strike in adverse circumstances to defeat the opponent by a surprise move. Returning Body Eight Palms has eight types of striking and walking away, walking and also returning to strike.
The 64 Palms is a complete summation of the practice methods that Master Cheng Youxin learned from Master Cheng Tinghua and all of his classmates. truly is second generation, third generation and master Cheng Youxin’s 50 years painstaking training. By practicing the 64 Palms, not only can you strengthen your skill, but you can enrich the palm methods, and it can even help you to grasp the skills and essentials of Baguazhang.
Swimming Body Connected Palms: Swimming Body Connected Palms consists of the Basic Palms, Eight Big Palms, and the 64 Palms reorganized into connected routines. It can be used for participating in competitions and performances. It provides the practitioner with aesthetic grace. By practicing it you will strengthen your awareness of attack and defense. It will add many more changes to the palm method. The body method will become more agile. The stepping method will become still more ingenious. The skill will become richer. By going through with the training, the whole body, each muscle, joint, and organ, all parts of each physiological system get trained. It dispels disease, strengthens the body, and is a means of prolonging life.
Cheng Style Baguazhang Weapons Routines
Master Dong Haichuan was very good at the saber method. Master Dong’s epitaph says: “Dong’s hands went inches past his knees, therefore fists and palms many leave the man unexpected, all difficult defend against.” The length of the body of the Bagua saber is 4 feet 2 inches. Add this to the fact that Master Dong’s hands reached past his knees, we are approaching seven feet of length and beyond. We can infer that Master Dong, when he had a saber in his hand, was an impressive and extraordinary sight to behold. Therefore all of Master Dong’s students were good at the Bagua saber method. Cheng Style Baguazhang has in it Rolling Hand Saber, Point the Road Saber, Crowd Blocking Saber, and using the principles of walking and turning is Turning Saber.
Cheng Style Baguazhang has the sword method in it. Sun Lutang wrote a book A Study of Bagua Sword. Master Sun Xikun also has a sword method in his True Transmission of Baguazhang. The sword’s style and functional method are similar to the Bagua Saber. The Bagua sword has two edges, and besides the saber-like methods, there are the many uses of the sword’s point.
There are spear methods in Cheng Style Baguazhang, many of which are from the teachings of Big Spear Liu Dekuan. After Master Cheng Tinghua died, Big Spear Liu was the acting teacher and controlled the junior apprentices. He did his best to teach them, and give guidance and support to the less advanced. His transmission has Fighting Body Spear, Eight Spear, Black and White Sparrowhawk, Small Sparrowhawk, the method of the halberd, qinna methods and the straight line practice of 64 Hands.

Hiiiii so like, a while back my brother and I got super into three body, and I gotta say I love seeing your posts about them ejdndjsksk
Sooo as a thank you, I wanna share with you the playlist we made :DDD (if you have more suggestionsI would LOVE to hear them) https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4YL4U0LYby45mflozWCrmn?si=tVVOrOdRTCujgvrKkPEryA&pi=a-Aja4glZ5TByK
hi, evelyn! i'm so glad that you and your brother like three-body! and i'm flattered that you like my posts <3!
also thanks so much for the playlist! it's really a nice range of selections that are quite fitting for the show! I love it!
i don't really have much to add. but if anyone likes instrumental and symphony music, i have a few pieces that i think reminds me of three-body somehow (1,2 are epic; 3,4 are soft):
atom music audio - into oblivion
atom music audio - reverence
max ritcher - war anthem
max richter - mercy
also a few songs recommended for shiwang:
唐汉霄/tang hanxiao - 再见深海/goodbye deep sea (original version) (ai generated shiwang version with lyric translation) this is actually the ending theme song of a really good animated movie that premiered around the same time of three-body. what brought my attention to the song was that a fan used ai program and generated a version of the song with zhang luyi and yu hewei's voices, so it's like wang miao and shi qiang sang this song together. the lyric is also very very very shiwang. i literally cried when i heard the shiwang version of the song for the first time.
赵雷/zhao lei - 我记得/i remember this is actually a very popular bgm for any kind of loving relationship, a song about the reincarnation of two people. this song is really shiwang fans hoping that they can eventually spend a lifetime together. last line of the lyric says "come and hug me quickly. i finally found you" which is really fitting for the hug scene.
家家/Jiajia - 尘埃/dust i've posted about this song here with lyric translation. it's a bgm three-body's official social media picked for a shiwang video on douyin.
火鸡朋友/turkey friends, this is an original song written and recorded by the fans for shiwang. it really shows how much people love shiwang. i kinda never thought a middle aged chinese ship would get this kind of dedicated treatment from the fans, but shiwang did it.

Ed's Emerald, part 2:[if this makes no sense read this first](https://www.reddit.com/r/OurFlagMeansDeath/comments/17lefvi/ofmd_eds_emerald_ring_a_love_story_spoilers_for/)
[**RevolutionaryTrash98**](https://www.reddit.com/user/RevolutionaryTrash98/) made this comment:
I think one of the most important scenes with this ring is end of The Innkeeper when Stede brings Ed back to life. Ed's wearing the ring and [when he's drowning and fighting for his life, it's the ring tapping noise that gets Stede's attention](https://youtu.be/-M4MwZCKNEA?si=9DFEsu6oxJ52lEqo&t=72). The very last shot is Stede holding Ed's hand with the ring visible.
This is brilliant and it also got me thinking, let's follow the emerald ring through the season
2x1 and 2x2 - Ed doesn't want his crew (or us) to know how much he misses Stede. He has the emerald ring but we barely see it. Honestly, unless you pause the show every time you see Ed's hand and go frame by frame you will miss it. It's there for less then half a second during the fight montage in 2x1 and briefly when Ed sniffs the rhino horn and holds the ships wheel in 2x2. Stede is the only thing giving Ed any semblance of sanity and ONLY Ed gets to know that.
2x3 - We see the emerald clearly for the first time. It's when Ed is leaning on the staff and telling hornigold the reasons he wants to live. Warmth, good food, intercourse, orgasms. All things Stede gives him. This shot is from far away, we aren't being let in yet, but Ed is opening up a little and being pretty freakin clear about who and what he needs. The Ed sees Merman Stede and we HEAR THE RING BANGING THE FUCK AROUND BECAUSE OMG ED HAS HIS STEDE BACK. We don't see the ring, this moment is still just for Ed, but we sure as shit hear about it
2x4 - Ed's still half dead. Stede is here, but we're keeping our distance. We see the ring twice, once when Ed is talking to Wolf and again when Ed and Mary are smoking outside. The ring is noticeable without pausing, the shots of it are closer then in 2x3, but still rather distant. Stede is here, but their relationship is still pretty distant.
2x5 - Ed is relaxing, he has Stede. We're all calm and working through stuff. No rings to speak of, but that's ok cause right now we don't need the ring, we have Stede right here.
2x6 - Ed has the emerald back on, but we don't get many close ups of it. We see it sparkle and shine when Ed and Stede start making out. Ed has his Stede and his emerald twinkles. like in 2x4 the shot of the ring is clearer, but still relatively far away
2x7 - It's the morning after what I can only assume is (probably inadvisable) mind blowing sex and BOOM, close up on that emerald ring. This is the moment a majority of fans noticed the ring, many assuming Stede gave it to Ed the night before. And in a way he did, now that Ed has been well and truly docked you better fucking believe that it's time for Stede's ring to shine. It is also pretty well featured during the lunch scene, as our boys are still glowing from the morning. BUT, after this point, when Ed is panicking and running away we barely see it. He's freaked out, he isn't looking to the ring for comfort. Stede was there, but not Ed is pushing him away
2x8 - we get two long and lingering shots of the emerald. But first we get nothing. We don't see the ring clearly again until Ed and Stede reunite. Then we see that emerald shine, all over Stede's face, neck, and chest. Stede is here, Ed is here, they love each other and that friggin emerald knows it. We get a pretty good shot of it when Ed, Stede and Zhang are talking. Ed covers his left hand and the ring when he calls Stede's plan a suicide mission. The next and ;ast time we get a close up of that ring is when Izzy is dying and Ed thrusts his bloody hand forward. He's losing his family, but Izzy reminds him that he is surrounded by family. Stede is his family and the ring is there, in the closest shot we have had of it yet. Ed needs Stede now more then ever, and Stede is there.
We don't see the ring clearly again, but we do get some wedding vows, seems Ed and Stede have already fulfilled them...
Do you vow to protect and, if necessary, kill... for each other?
Do you vow to avenge the other in the event of your grisly death or dismemberment?
Do you vow to keep each other's ship afloat?

Account of the Braided Bandits, Part 2 (SS095)
The war between Wei and Song continues. Wei's armies captures Jinyong (a fortress situated at the northern corner of old Luoyang) relatively easy, but Mao Dezu holds out at Hulao (the "Tiger's Pen"). Further east Wei forces also put Dongyang City under siege.
Si is Tuoba Si, Emperor Mingyuan of Wei.
"Zheng Troops" is short for the General of Zheng Troops, Daxi Jin, who leads the Wei siege of Hulao.
The Young Emperor's 1st Year of Jingping, 1st Month [28 January – 25 February 423], the Zheng Troops divided off an army go towards Luo, and attack Xiaolei. The defence commander of the small ramparts, Dou Huang, resisted in battle, he lost and fell. The Grand Warden of Henan, Wang Juanzhi, abandoned Jinyong and set out and ran. From the bandits divided off an army towards Luo, Dezu always fought and every time routed them.
Si, himself leading a great multitude, arrived at Ye. When Zheng Troops had overcome Jinyong, he then turned back to Hulao. Dezu inside the city made tunnels in the walls, going in seven zhang in two paths, and set out outside the city, again divided along six paths, and set out for the rear of the bandits' columns. He recruited 400 dare-to-die soldiers, with Army Adviser Fan Daoji leading 200 as the vanguard, and Army Advisers Guo Wangfu and Liu Gui, and others with 200 as the rear connection, to set out outside the thieves' encirclement, and ambush and assail their rear. The bandits' columns were thrown into confusion. They cut off several hundred heads, and burnt up the assault implements. The bandits, though they retreated and scattered, subsequently then once more joined together.
The bandits also dispatched the General of Chu Troops and Inspector of Xu province, the Duke of Anping, Shegui Fannengjian, the General of Yue Troops and Inspector of Qing province, the Marquis of Linzi, Xue Daoqian, and the General of Chen Troops and Inspector of Huai province, the Count of Shouzhang, Zhang Mo, to go east and strike Qing province. The cities and towns in that direction all ran and fled. The General of the Best of the Army and Inspector of Qing province, Zhu Kui garrisoned Dongyang City. When he heard the bandits had arrived, he collected the multitudes and strengthened the defences. The Dragon-Prancing General and Grand Warden of Ji'nan, Yuan Miao, led the civil and military officials of his two offices and commandery to run and go to Kui.
Kui pledged an oath with his generals and soldiers. Those resident people who had not entered the city were made to move and go to the mountain impasses, and they burnt the grain fields, to make it so that when the bandits arrived there would be nothing to supply them. The bandit multitude that went toward Qing province, from front to rear between the Ji and the He was altogether 60 000 cavalry.
3rd Month [28 March – 25 April], 30 000 cavalry went forward to pursue and threaten. Within the city were 1 500 civil and military people, but half of that were a mix of Qiang and Man vagabonds and sundry. People felt terrified and afraid. Zhu Kui at night dispatched Marshal Che Zong to lead 500 people to set out from the city in a surprise strike, the bandits' multitudes split apart and withdrew.
In the span of two days, the bandits' infantry and cavalry fully arrived. They encircled the city four times, their ranks and columns [stretched] for more than 10 li. Reaching the afternoon, they withdrew and turned back to continuous encampments on the An River, 20 li distant from the city. They greatly put in order attack implements, and day after day divided off infantry and cavalry to regularly come and pressure the city.
Kui at night sent the General Within the Halls, Zhu Zongzhi, Army Adviser Jia Yuanlong, and others to lead 100 people, and prepare an ambush at the two banks at the mouth of the Yang River. The bandit general Afujin led 300 people to cross the river at daybreak. The ambushers issued out from the two banks, and the bandit cavalry ran off in four directions. They killed and wounded several tens of people, and put on display Afujin's head. The bandits again advanced to encamp south of the river, at a distance 4 li north-west of the city.
Si from Ye dispatched troops to add to [those at] Hulao, to intensify the siege and press the attack. Zheng Troops led 3000 infantry and cavalry from Hulao to attack the Grand Warden of Yingchuan, Li Yuande, at Xuchang. The Army Advisor of Chariots and Cavalry, Wang Xuanmo, led 1 000 men to help Yuande defend. He and Yuande together were scattered and defeated. The bandits promptly employed a native of Yingchuan, Yu Long, as Grand Warden of Yingchuan, to lead 500 cavalry, and also issue out the able-bodied among the people so as to defend the city.
Dezu set out with the army to strike Gongsun Biao, there was a great battle from morning to evening, and he killed several hundred of the bandits. It happened that Zheng Troops' army returned from Xuchang, and joined with the siege. Dezu was greatly defeated. He lost more than 1 000 armoured soldiers, and withdrew back to strengthen the city. Si again dispatched more than 10 000 people from Ye, to pass by the He from Baishakou [“White Sand Mouth”], and build a rampart at Hanquan to the south of Puyang City.
A court debate considered that:
The distance between Xiang City and the bandits is not far, not a shelter for a light army, make Liu Cui summon Gao Daojin back to Shouyang. If Shen Shuli already has advanced, he likewise ought be followed up on as well.
Cui considered that the bandits were attacking Hulao and had not yet turned southward, but if he right then gathered in the army residing at Xiang City, then the various commanderies west of the Huai would have nobody to rely and depend on. Shen Shuli had already stopped at the mouth of the Fei and also ought not right then withdraw. At the time Li Yuande, leading 200 scattered troops, arrived at Xiang. Liu Cui made him help Gao Daojin defend and guard, and requested that he be pardoned for his crime of fleeing in defeat. A court debate allowed it in both cases.
Tan Daojin arrived at Pengcheng. He considered that Qing and Si provinces were both in a critical state, however his command was not many and insufficient to proceed separately. [Since] the road to Qing province was nearby and Zhu Kui's troops were weak, he would first save Qing province.
Zhu Kui dispatched people to set out from the city and build moats to the east, west, and south. The bandits north of the city for more than 300 bu dug out a long encirclement. The bandits went down from their horses and advanced on foot. The troops with short arms connected, on top the city walls the bows and crossbows issued forth, and the bandits therefore split and scattered.
The bandits thereupon filled in the outer moats, pulled in four tall buildings and twenty “toad wagons”, setting them up inside the long encirclement. Kui had previously dug out north of the city to make three tunnels. He made them pass through the outer moats and then dug out inside the moats. Within, two zhang from the walls, he made a small moated. He dispatched more than 300 people to set out through the tunnels, intending to burn the bandits' attack implements. At the time a whirlwind shifted the flames, and the fire did not ignite. The bandit troops' arrows came down across, and many of the soldiers were wounded. He gathered the multitude and turned back inside.
The bandits filled in the three moats until they were fully level, However they left behind the small moat, due which the toad chariots could not catch up. The bandits used pillars [?] to attack the city. Kui recruited strong men to tie together great rocks and grindstones upon the city walls, and heap them upon them. He again set out to within the small moat, made use of large hemp-ropes stretched across the structure [?] and attacked the wagons near the city. From inside the tunnels, many strong people pull and made them snap. The bandits then dug out a long encirclement to the south of the city, and advanced the attack even more pressingly.
Kui was able to grasp what was important, while Yuan Miao had a capacity for audacity. For that reason they were able to firmly defend through changing seasons. However, they were attacked daily for a long time, and the city was gradually ruined and destroyed. Many of the fighting soldiers were dead or wounded, and the remaining multitudes were hard-pressed and exhausted. From dawn to dusk they were on the verge of capture while Tan Daoji and Wang Zhongde through forced marches hurried to them.
Liu Cui dispatched Li Yuande to assail Xuchang. Yu Long ran away. General Song Huang followed in pursuit, and cut of Long's head. Yuande following that halted to soothe and console, and also sent up taxes and provisions.
The bandits' Yuebo Dafei led more than 3 000 cavalry, and routed five counties that belonged to Gaoping commandery: Gaoping, Fangyu, Rencheng, Jinxiang, and Kangfu. They killed or carried off more than 2 000 families. They killed their boys and drove away into captivity their young women. The Inspector of Yan province, Zheng Shunzhi, guarded Hulu, and though he had troops, he did not dare set out. The General of the Best of the Army, Shen Xuan, defended Pengcheng, which was more than 200 li distant from Gaoping. He feared the bandits would arrive, and moved the people living outside the outer walls, and also the various encampment offices, to fully enter the Lesser City.
Si again dispatched the Inspector of Bing province, Yilou Ba to help Zheng Troops attack Hulao, and fill up the pair of moats at the frontier. Dezu along the way had just so resisted and held them off, and to some extent killed the bandits, but his generals and soldiers were bit by bit crumbling away.
4th Month, renshen [1 May], the bandits heard that Daoji was about to arrive. They burnt their instruments and implements, abandoned Qing province, and fled.
Zhu Kui sent up words that Dongyang City had been destroyed and ruined by the attacks, and was impossible to defend. He moved to garrison Changguang's Buqi City. Kui, due to his merit in firmly defending, advanced in title to General of the Van, and was ennobled Baron of Jianling county with a revenue estate of 400 households. Kui, courtesy name Zuji, was a native of Dongguan. In office he reached Gold and Purple Brilliantly Blessed Grandee.

Me mantuve expectante.
