All About Hair—How Much do you Know About Mine?

In my last post, I mentioned that normalization was one of the main goals of the short film “Hair Love.” But a great point was raised in the comment section of that post. Is normalization of cultural differences only possible through media and its circulation of images?

Growing up and being the only Afro girl in most of my classes, hair was a topic I hated touching on with my non-Black friends. I wore braids, twists, relaxers, weaves—you name it! Until I decided to go natural in 2015.

Regardless of my hairstyle, the conversations around my hair with non-Black folks were always disheartening, to say the least.

“Is that ALL of your hair?” “Do you even wash your hair?” These are just a few of the types of questions I would get by intrigued non-Black folks who were often unaware of their partaking in the processing of othering me and others whose hair was, to them, a peculiar curiosity.

I knew the routine for the girls with silky, fine hair. Wash every day so there is no oil build-up, even if that means using dry shampoo in the morning. Flyaways are fixed with a simple soft brush and split-ends are addressed with routine trims and cuts. But what about me?

How much or how little did they know about my hair?

Antonia Opiah, co-founder of Un-ruly⁠—a website dedicated to Afro hair—addresses this issue by asking if Black hair can ever just be hair back in a May 2018 article:

“Black hair comes in a cornucopia of textures and styles, but over time people within and outside of our community have come to associate certain values with certain styles and textures. Stereotypes associated with natural hair include being earthy and bohemian, unprofessional, woke, pro-Black and/or militant. Relaxed hair or weaves are associated with being superficial, bougie and everyone’s favorite: self-hating. For Black hair to be a non-event, we’d have to rid it of its associations — within the community and outside of it.”

Back in 2018, the CreativeSoul AfroArt photo series highlighted young Afro girls with their natural hair. Since then, the representation of Afro girls and women with their natural hair in the mainstream media is continuously rising—and slowly.

The mention of the slow rise is not a cast of pessimism on the process of accepting and normalizing Afro hair, but rather a reminder that there is still much work to do and the media can’t be the only source we rely on to spark these changes.
