I wasn’t going to be petty but now i want to lol.

Anyways, last night I replied to a completely unhinged comment on a fic I was reading because I felt like it was so rude to the author and literally bonkers. I don’t have the original comment because the author deleted the thread (after thanking me) but basically this was a fic about post-GoT Sansa and a character from HotD who got timetraveled to the future(that part isn’t really important except for the fact that this rude commenter hadn’t watch HotD or read any of the books).

Anyways so in this huge huge chunk of text, this jerk says he just had to say this so the author shouldn’t be offended but he literally just had to give his unsolicited opinion. He talks about how he hates this fic because he hates Sansa and goes on a rant about season 8 and the fact that actually he knows best and Sansa is going to be a horrible ruler and the north seceding would not work blah blah. Basically a whole rant about the show to just say how he finds this fic terrible and blah blah very rude followed by oh sorry to the author but I absolutely have to say this. Like I said completely unnecessary and unhinged. (He also was a guest but put presumably his actual name down???)

So you know me. I’m a very nice person and usually very non-confrontational. BUT I know that getting this type of comment can really hurt so I felt like I had to reply. So I did and shortly after I get a response nearly as unbelievable as the original comment. Here’s the exchange:

Why are you convinced that YOUR personal interpretation of lapselock is the correct way when other people have said they interpret it differently? everyone has different preferences. some people find lapselock to be the conversational voice while other people believe it sounds passive aggressive or aggressive - neither one is right or wrong. its just how you hear it. I've found in-person voice tone has the same type of varying interpretations. its just the human experience. You just have to adjust to whoever you're talking to, and try to give strangers the benefit of the doubt, in my experience.

hey - well it started off actually because i was writing a fic (my first one actually, i began it feb 2021 on the 14th). and i just thought it would be interesting to visually spot how many times his name appeared in the text on a given page. capitalising it makes it stand out.

and then it got to be a bit of a habit... i like how it looks, the fic got a bit out of control (it's now over 1.2 million words and nowhere near finished) and my fingers got so used to typing it that way, sometimes writing for 8 hours at a time overnight) that i do it everywhere now without thinking about it.

in fact if i'm going to type a similar word in allcaps, like LIKE or LOOK i actually have to slow down and often end up typing LOKI instead by mistake haha.

in my published fics, his name is written like "Loki", just because it's easier for people to read if the text is presented in the accepted standard. for that reason i also capitalise sentence beginnings and proper noun first letters, in those stories. and use correct punctuation and all the other fiddly stuff that people expect.

so i hope that answers your question lol. oh, and i also kind of like how it makes his name more important in the text. not to blaspheme lol but kind of like in the bible where YHWH (referring to god the father) is translated in the king james version as the LORD. to separate it from jesus who is titled Lord. but that's not the reason i did it, it's just an amusing coincidence.

heya! i too am a member of the discord and have been for quite some time now, and i have to say, e v e r y o n e is exaggerating.

the discord is generally pretty welcoming to new people, but it is true that if you don't share any common interests or ships, you won't get much attention past that. on the other hand, if nobody else there even watches the same show or doesn't care about your blorbo, it's understandable that nobody else is gunna engage with you about them. try looking at the tags for that fandom or blorbo or ship here on tungl, or look for discords dedicated to that fandom /gen

yeah, there is a group in the discord that is kind of a circlejerk, a mod is part of the circlejerk group and they are kind of an asshole tbh, but idk personally i've seen far worse in other places (coughcoughairronartfightcough) so it's whatever, no discord is perfect. the other staff isn't and tbh only half of the mods seems to be present at any given day anyhoo

yes some people in the discord allcaps insults at eachother, it's very obviously friends having a giggle, they're not gunna talk to new people like that. sure it can be pretty annoying when there's 100+ new messages and it's just spamming the channels, but whatever, just mark as read and find something else to do for a while

you're also not likely to get much attention on your art unless you have a particular graphic toon art style, and draw masc characters or the right kind of kinks, or you're a bna. ((god forbid you're a proship bna, you will have people tripping over you constantly. but that's how it goes!! :p))

the comm is like 90% mlm transmasc so tbh most fem stuff in general gets overlooked or ignored. i don't really talk in there much anymore bc i feel hella out of place bc i'm not transmasc or mlm and a lot of the stuff i like isn't well liked there :"))))

on the other hand. atleast you're not gunna be shamed for liking whatever kink and stuff there. you just get ignored if people don't like it. and the mods are pretty hard on shittalking people, there's a rule against vagueing and posting callouts (someone recently joined JUST to vague mastodon users, tried to pick a fight with the mods when they were told to knock it off and read the rules, and then got banned. rofl byeee) /lh

tbhhhhh the one thing that's actually pretty uncomfy about the comm is alot of people there are really fucking ignorant about literally any asian or indiginous culture, theres 2 mods who usually try to correct the racism or appopriation from time to time but theyre also ignored half the time so people keep posting the same racist ass shit from time to time. /srs/lu

i found out i can verify the existence or nonexistence of entities in fallout 76 by renaming a weapon as a name in allcaps and seeing if it corrects. some entities like Jet, Synth, Nick Valentine, Dogmeat, and Laser Musket linger, but others like PIPER, MOTHER IDOL, and HUBFLOWER have been removed or adjusted. and it appears to work with npc names. good to know

I admit: I am a CC-holic. I download way too much stuff and will probably never delete any of it. Do I need my 4 TB of storage? Yes, precisely because of that! (Okay, it’s not all filled with sims stuff, but the first 2 TB filled up pretty quickly). I would like to play Sims 4 every now and then, but most of my time is spent with updating my mods and downloading new things I cannot resist. Now my game is loading pretty slowly and I have not really paid attention to file naming. I read somewhere (I hope this is correct info) that Sims 4 slows down while having to read any files containing other characters than numbers, the letters A-Z or undersccores. But how do you rename tens of thousands of files? One-by-one? I do not have enough days left to live for that. But it is doable with a free program designed for that sort of thing: Advanced Renamer. I checked it out and quicky realized that there is much more to it than just clicking a few buttons. Advanced Renamer can rename files and folders in batches and works with Regular Expressions, which is a, for lack of a better word,a programming language (not sure it counts that way but it sure feels like writing code!) designed to match patterns in a string, such as a filename. Once I saw what magic this can do, I dove in and have been trial-and-erroring and copy-pasting and reading on how to best write a “regex” so they do what I want them to. It is very frustrating at times, but very rewarding to see hundreds of files “magically” renamed just the way you want them to. I actually have a lot of fun tweaking my “expressions”. In the screenshots, you can see a bit of what I’m doing there. I have different methods that I can toggle on or off as needed that focus on a specific attribute, for example, I like to have the Creator’s name in ALLCAPS as the first word. So I figured out how to do that. I can also switch the order of words very easily with Advanced Renamer, great for any files from creators that do not start their files with their name but put them at the end. I can just swap them around to the front. I can target specific words such as RoM or YF to make sure they are capitalized the right the way and separated by other words by underscores.I can convert hyphens to underscores and remove any non-word characters such as ! or &. I can even convert umlauts correctly, so ü becomess ue (really useful for the German language). And so much more... I’ve been doing this now for about a week, not very streamlined but on a need-to-know basis and I barely scratched the surface of it all, but it is empowering to learn something so useful. And my sims 4 files are starting to look really nice and orderly.

This theory is probably just a bunch of nonsense fueled by my adoration of Spamton and the original Starwalker, but I think that starwalker birds and the original Starwalker in chapter 1 parallel the relationship between Swatch and Spamton in chapter 2

No offense to Starwalker, but the starwalker birds have a much nicer sprite, their design is cool and is meant to be aesthetically pleasing in contrast to the original Starwalker, whose design is more notable for being funny and crudely drawn on purpose. This is just like how Swatch looks dignified and professional in their shop sprites while Spamton looks silly and off-putting 

If you talk to the original Starwalker, they say they're "the original" and that the starwalker birds are "pissing them off," which implies that the original Starwalker thinks the starwalker birds are copying them, similarly to how Swatch alludes to Spamton copying their look.

There's also the fact that if you check Spamton's pipis, the text will say they're "the original," and buying a bowtie from him will get him to declare that they're "exclusive official" merchandise. This seems to acknowledge the fact that Spamton wants people to know that his ideas and products are unique to him, which is interesting in consideration of the fact that Swatch has been selling his old bowties with the labels removed.

The original Starwalker's claim of the starwalker birds copying them seems ridiculous, as the starwalker birds do what Starwalker does so much better that's it's almost a laughable accusation, and if anything it seems like the original Starwalker is the one doing the copying. But you could say the same about Spamton's insistence on being genuine and original, and it turns out Swatch is the one doing some of the stealing...so maybe the original Starwalker is actually correct.

And hey, maybe Swatch is also falsely accusing Spamton of copying them when they're the one who stole HIS look, it's just that nobody will believe Spamton since he isn't the most credible source and Swatch wears that style in a much more flattering and believable way

Also, Swatch is very birdlike, while Spamton only has him calling the pipis “eggs” and having wings in his angel and neo forms to relate him to birds (and Swatch in this regard). Likewise the original Starwalker is only similar to a starwalker bird by virtue of being a star, so they don't have all that much in common. 

The starwalker birds and Swatch are also both birdlike darkners, so they have that in common. And when looking at shared traits between the original Starwalker and Spamton, they both have pretty notable quirks in the way that they speak, with some of them being only visible through writing (use of yellow text and odd spacing/use of brackets and odd characters in place of letters), and both capitalize words in a strange way (”Pissing”/Spamton’s allcaps). 

Spamton doesn’t do this too often, but there are a few times where he adds unnecessary spaces in his sentences, usually because he’s omitting a word (”HEY EVERY !” at the start of his first appearance and the “IT’S FUN FOR THE          !” from his fangamer merch page being two examples that came to mind, but iirc there are more than just these two). Starwalker just seems to be stretching out dialogue instead of omitting words, but it’s still similar enough that I wanted to specifically mention it

I really don't think this means much but I love to overthink when it comes to these guys so here is my analysis :)

Hi I have one more question and then I'll stop pestering you, sorry! I was wondering whether you could help translate the last line from Klefi/Samed into Icelandic please. The 'official' translation says that in English it's "I am steadfast, I will not bow" which Google translates to ÉG ER STÖÐFUR, ÉG MUN EKKI BEYJA, but if I ask Google to translate directly from Arabic it gives me Ég er staðfastur, ég mun ekki beygja mig. Is one of those correct? Happy to tip via Kofi/similar by way of thanks!

Well, I don't know Arabic, of course, so I'm not the right person to say exactly how to translate the line! But Bashar Murad is, and confirmed in a Discord chat that the official English translation of the Arabic parts of Klefi/Samed is his own, so presumably "I'm steadfast, I won't bow down" is correct.

"Ég er stöðfur, ég mun ekki beyja" is nonsense; "Stöðfur" and "beyja" are just plain not words. I think this may be caused by you typing the lyric in all-caps, and Google Translate getting confused by that because it just hasn't seen a lot of allcaps Icelandic and the way the neural net is encoded means it doesn't inherently understand the connection between uppercase and lowercase letters (yes, really, that's how these neural networks generally work). If I type it normally, Google comes up with "Ég er staðfastur, ég mun ekki beygja mig" there, too.

That translation is rather too literal, though: "beygja mig" means to literally, physically bend down, like you need to pick something up from the ground, and doesn't quite have the right immediate connotation of submitting to an unjust authority. ("Beygja sig undir eitthvað" is a phrase with that meaning, but needs an object.) If I were to translate it myself I might with something like "Ég er staðfastur, ég lýt ekki" (að lúta means to bow your head or metaphorically to submit to someone in the correct sort of way, ég lýt is the first person present/future tense and falls better into the original rhythm of the line than the explicit future "ég mun ekki lúta").

Kinda curious about which post this refers to but I respect if you're uncomfortable talking about it

{It’s cool. I deleted the replies and asks associated with this because it was just, frankly, kinda bluntly put and very much uncomfortable, but it was for the dreepy post. The first reply only mentioned that it was tagged a certain way, I misinterpreted it, and immediately after, I had one person in the replies and several people in the askbox teasing Bill about it—including one doing the allcaps airpods meme—and it was just uncomfortable.

The biggest thing I want to talk about, really, is something I ironically try not to bring up, because even though these out-of-character posts have been coming more and more frequently as of late, pointing this out sort of breaks down the believability of the blog, not to be pretentious about it. Like, absolutely, I want you to talk to Bill and Lanette as if they’re the ones running the show, which is why I often refer to myself in the plural in these notes. (It’s our blog and we’re doing this, as if to say I’m just a third party separate from the characters.) But the reality is that there’s only one player, and that player is admittedly not as smart or integrated with the Pokémon world as Bill is. So yes, mistakes happen. What’s more, I’m actually just as new to Gen VIII as the rest of you, so I don’t actually know everything about it. (To be more accurate, I actually only got a Switch less than a month ago, so many of you might actually be more knowledgable about Gen VIII than I am.) I still do my best to research, but sometimes, that’s not possible.

Up to this point, I’d be pretty patient whenever people would correct Bill because I don’t want to be That Person. But yeah, sometimes, it gets a little uncomfortable because sometimes, it sort of feels like people are trying to show up Bill, which ... is really uncomfortable on the internet, considering the mun is a woman. (Doubly so if you’re doing it with your own headcanon and not, like, canon or scientific fact. Definitely don’t do that!)

Ultimately, the point is, it’s important to remember there’s a real person behind the blog, in the singular. It’s okay to correct, but please do so in a discreet and polite manner, and be as clear as possible. Don’t do it just to point out issues with the blog but rather because you want to help. And at the very least, please be patient with the mun.
