I haven’t done a fic rec post in forever and since I recently participated in a bts comment bingo on twitter, I thought it might be nice to rec the fics here too

I was wondering if maybe you could think of some fics off the top of your head that remind you of rntm or never be?? where they have a really loving, nice and fun, equal relationship, and it's basically just a long telling of their life together? like, just pure fluff and every day life with some minor plot twists or something like that. have a nice day🥰

I’m putting both of these together because it seems like you’re essentially asking for the same thing. In regards to the first requesting fics like RNTM and Never Be, It’s been ages since I read either of those, but I don’t really think of those two fics as being very similar so…hopefully I can give you what you want!

Let’s start with these recs I made of “short and sweet” , “soft, sweet, and sort of soulmate-y” and “soft and tender” fics, and a caveat that I really don’t tend to read fics that are all fluff, but the following are ones I think fit the overall vibe you’re both going for!

It’s Been So Long by elsi_bee / @elsi-bee (T, 31K)This was so charming. I always love Louis and Gemma as friends, and the “in love with my best friend’s brother” rarely lets me down. This fic is both sweet and endearing while also being very moving. I loved the tender way they treated each other, even when they were pining, and the flashbacks were the perfect way to fill in the blanks. And such a sweet ending as well. So well done.

Literally Making Love by Brooklyn_Babylon / @twopoppies (E, 30K) this is mine, so here’s the summary:

Holding up one of the android's eyes to the workshop’s windows, he smiled as the light picked up the gold flecks in the pale green of his irises. Louis had always paid attention to even the tiniest details.

All Louis intended to do was rescue someone in need from loneliness. He had no idea it would be himself.

stop the world (‘cause i wanna get off with you) by devilinmybrain / @thedevilinmybrain (E, 12K) Best thing I’ve read in ages. Such perfect characterizations and pacing. It felt so realistic and you could feel the desperation. And the final sex scene was so worth it.

sweet baby, our sex has meaning by publunchesownmyass (E, 8K) This author manages to make this fic romantic and filthy and super sexy all at once. Plus, Harry in that lace dress and you’ve got a winner.

Carry These Feelings by LadyLondonderry / @londonfoginacup (GA, 3K) This was just lovely and mysterious and sweet. I loved their banter and the whole description of Harry traveling the world, remembering and collecting feelings. It’s totally unique and beautifully written.

Looking down from the clouds by Star_Henderson / @tommosgun (E, 18K) Fun, sexy, and lighthearted. This author does those three things really well in this famous/not famous meet cute.

Have Love, Will Travel by @kingsofeverything (E, 97K) This is basically 100K of sweetness, romance, and banter. Or, Larry falling in love on a road trip.

The Section by bananaheathen (M, 11K) Listen... I just discovered this author and I LOVE them. If you liked These Inconvenient Fireworks, read this now! It’s got all of the OT5 friendship, humor, and banter, without the heartbreaking angst. I loved this one.

Fine Line by bananaheathen (T, 5K) Have I mentioned I love this author? The dialogue and banter in this is top notch. Just a delightful fic that feels perfect at 5K, and at the same time I wish there was 100K more.

smell the sea, feel the sky by @lightwoodsmagic (E, 16K) This is the perfect summer pining fic. I love that they’re adults and still the same horny, pining fools for each other and it still works. It’s just very sexy, light, and fun.

led by your beating heart by missandrogyny (E, 29K) This time it’s a game of Call and Delete that reunite Harry and Louis. This author always writes fun and sexy fics. Give this one a shot.

Gimme Some Sugar by nonsensedarling / @absoloutenonsense (M, 14K) This one takes place almost entirely inside a bakery where Harry and Louis are coworkers. It’s sweet and funny and I love awkward, flustered Louis trying to tame his massive crush for Harry.

Looking down from the clouds by Star_Henderson / @tommosgun (E, 18K) Fun, sexy, and lighthearted. This author does those three things really well in this famous/not famous meet cute.

show me devotion by mercutionotromeo (E, 1.4K) This is one of my favorite authors when it comes to smutty fic, and this one is just sexy and gentle with lots of banter. I loved the way they contrasted their teen years with current behavior. So well done.

All I See Is You, Lately by runaway_train / @runaway-train-works (GA, 2K) Such a sweet meet cute. I loved the way Harry learns about who Louis is purely by observing him on the tube.

Just Tell Me the Song and I’ll Sing It by myownspark / @myownsparknow (NR, 40K) While this one does have a nice bit of pining, it’s overall a really tender, sweet fic and it’s so beautifully written, it deserves more people to know about it.

You Always Make Me Smile by champagneboyband (E, 60K) Yes, it’s a WIP. Yes, I recommend it all the time. It’s 7 chapters of what is probably my favorite fic and I cry whenever I think about how it likely will never be finished. But, for me, this is the closet fic to RNTM I know of, with the addition of some tension and imperfect characters. I absolutely adore. it. Link is to a download.

Some Clear Jellyfish Don’t Sting by gloria_andrews / @gloriaandrews (E, 32K) This one is a such a beautiful portrayal of summer love with some pining thrown in to make the resolution that much sweeter. And yes, it made me teary.

I’ll Be Your Love Tonight by @dinosaursmate (E, 20K) I love the slow and moody vibe of this fic. It’s almost like watching an indie film.

i wanna be your lover, baby, i wanna be your man by orphan_account (M, 27K) I’ve decided that there are not enough fics where Harry and Louis are in the Navy. But there’s this one, and it’s charming and sweet and romantic (and also sexy).

Sand in My Shoes, Head Over Feet by Awriterwrites / @a-writerwrites (E, 47K) If you’re familiar with this author, you know this fic has a lot of (really hot) smut. But it’s also a sweet summer romance and a fun read.

turn you on, make you radiate by ballsdeepinjesus (E, 15K) A canon-compliant peek at Harry and Louis’ sex life over the course of 10+ years. Just fluff and smut. Good times! Also, I laugh every time I read this part of the summary: When he finally feels like he’s under control, he presses his lips against Harry’s ear and whispers, “Are you ready husband?“Harry throws his head back and groans. “Call me your spouse.”

leave it to the breeze by hattalove (E, 81K) I wish I could remember the details on this one, other than that I liked it. But this author writes really well and it’s a Great British Bake Off AU, so….win/win! Also, the tag #gratuitous Ben Winston hate makes me certain that this is worth reading. LOL!

In Dreams by dolce_piccante (M, 24K) This actually might be my favorite of this author’s fics, although I know it’s definitely not the most popular. It’s just soft and romantic and sweet and I’m a sucker for tattoo artist Louis winning over slightly uptight Harry.

Whether Clouds or Clear Skies by onewasturning (E, 26K) I love everything I’ve read by this author – their fics are always full of beautifully crafted sentences and dreamy melancholy. This one is just slow and sweet and achingly pretty.

So Darling, Just Say You’ll Stay By My Side by supernope (E, 28K) Another fic I read too long ago to recall details of, but my rather unhelpful notes read, “LOVE! Slow build up, but so sexy!” So…here’s to trusting old me. I’m not too worried, this author is pretty sure bet.

Thought The Song Was Sung by 100percentsassy (E, 13K) This is both a famous/not famous and a dating app AU. Plus, older Larry. Plus an author who writes great fic. And this one is just sweet and charming and I really like this one.

knock knock, I love you by beautlouis / @watercherrwi (E, 86K) This is a fun, sexy fic with uni-aged Larry and virgin Harry. It’s got a bit of all the good stuff including comeplay, friends to lovers, and Louis encouraging Harry’s terrible knock knock jokes!

Life Saver by objectlesson (E, 31K) Louis’ a punk, theater kid, and Harry is a nerdy boy he shares a class with. Flustered flirting, insecurity, and the dramatics of a high school crush. I always enjoy how this author writes them at this age. Link is to a download.

Not the Desperate Type by @lululawrence (NR, 6K) Sweet and funny neighbors fic filled with misunderstandings, a meet-cute, and a very sexually frustrated Harry.

Never Be by cherrystreet (E, 118K) As I said, it’s been a long time. But this author always writes beautifully crafted stories. The summary: The one where Harry Styles moves to Connecticut from England for nine months as a part of a study abroad program, and he just so happens to move in with Louis Tomlinson and family.

Relief Next To Me by dolce_piccante (M, 334K) So, as the anon said, this is just pure fluff and it’s a favorite for a lot of people. I don’t really get the M rating, as it’s also got a huge amount of smut.

Sherlock Fic Recs (mostly lesser-known)

All right, I’ve recommended individual fics from time to time,and I certainly reblog fic rec lists, but this is the first time I’ve tried to assemble a Sherlock rec list of my own. I’m trying to select stories I’ve not seen often (or ever) on other lists for this, and they are in no particular order. Mind the tags. Nearly all are end-game Johnlock, although a couple are more gen.

Since this is my first time writing a fic rec list, please let me know if you enjoyed it.

A Telling Touch - by MikayoToudaiji, 91K, E, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson

Post-Reichenbach. After Sherlock’s death, John manages to get himself re-enlisted and is sent back to war. But when two series of gruesome murders link home and outland together, John is suddenly faced with more battles than he could have imagined. A Reunion, multi-chapter, case fic.

This is one of my go-to fics. John is grieving the loss of Sherlock and back in the army, this time in Syria, courtesy of Mycroft, when he is called home due to the mysterious death of Irene Adler. Irene was the latest victim of a serial killer, but she has managed to leave John a mysterious message. Sherlock does eventually return, but badly injured. There’s a fascinating case fic, a very different and totally platonic Mary Morstan, Sebastian Moran makes an appearance, and a Mummy Holmes who’s absolutely lovely. I find this story so emotionally rewarding, on many levels.

Sherlock's voice is all John has.

John is in a coma, and his only link back to the world is Sherlock’s voice. Told mostly from John’s perspective, the payoff when John finally wakes up is lovely.

John and Sherlock have a chance meeting with John's former sister-in-law and Sherlock learns a thing or two about John's return from Afghanistan.

Sherlock learns exactly how much damage John suffered from the bullet that brought him to London and that fateful meeting at St. Bart’s. Clara is very protective of John, even if he’s no longer her brother-in-law.

Bitter Sweet - by distantstarlight, 17K, E, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson

Alpha John Watson is a retired army doctor with a chance to acquire an omega mate. He meets the most unusual omega he’s ever encountered.

A somewhat unusual take on A/B/O dynamics, where alphas need to have a use in life, either with a satisfactory career or as a parent to the next generation. Omegas, including Sherlock, are bought at auction, which some may find disturbing, but there’s no indications of maltreatment on anyone’s part. It’s Sherlock who has all the power in this relationship, although he’s deleted the reasons why. John may have to pay the price for that.

The Art of Seduction series - by flawedamythyst, 97K across 6 works, T to E, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Sherlock Holmes/Jim Moriarty, Sherlock Holmes/many OMCs, John Watson/OMC, Mycroft Holmes/Greg Lestrade

Sherlock ran a website called The Science Of Seduction, on which he gave advice on the best ways to get laid, wrote blog entries detailing the results of his various sexual 'experiments' and generally contributed to the stereotype of 'every gay man is a sex-mad playboy'. John avoided the thing like the plague. AU in which Sherlock treats sex like he does crime in canon. Inspired by Queer As Folk UK, but it very quickly went its own way.

I love this series. Sherlock is obsessed, not with crime, but with sex. John is his flatmate and pretty much the only gay man in London with whom Sherlock has not slept. John pines, Sherlock sleeps with most of gay London, and they all go dancing every weekend. Then Jim shows up and ruins everything. Or does he?

Semper Fidelis - by Blind_Author, 57K, M, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Mycroft Holmes/Anthea

Written for a prompt. Moriarty frames John and "Anthea" of betrayals which cause both of the Holmes brothers to cut them off. Cue BAMF!John and BAMF!"Anthea" doing their best to clear their names.

John and Anthea go on the run after they are both framed the same day. They protect one another and bond over the idiocy of their respective Holmeses. Both are in established, if hidden, relationships. They bond while on the run.

Evidence of Human Life - by thesardine, 17K, E, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson

Sherlock's sanity deteriorates while he and John are stranded on a deserted island.

I basically summed this up in my personal bookmark as: Sherlock and John on a deserted island. They hunt seals, Sherlock periodically goes nuts, and they start having sex.

This Doesn’t Feel Like Falling - by Dark3Star, 148K, E, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, pre Mycroft Holmes/Greg Lestrade

When he fell from St. Barts, Sherlock knew he loved John Watson. John couldn't love him back (or so he thinks). Now that he's back from the dead things are back to normal... sort of. When a serial killer targets increasingly high profile gay couples Sherlock is on the case. With a, possibly ill-advised, plan Sherlock and John go undercover as a couple to uncover the truth.

Part 1 of a series, although this is by far the largest part. Your classic “married for a case” trope, taken to the extreme. There’s a decent case fic, a lot of mutual pining, and some interesting wedding planning. Heed the warnings, there are some pretty graphic depictions of violence when they finally confront the murderer.

The Secret Identity of John Watson - by scifigrl47, 27K, G, John Watson/OFC (but don’t let that scare you!)

Taken out of context, John Watson leads a terrifying life. You have to wonder what those poor women he dates thinks of it, especially if John decides to try keeping one away from Sherlock, and Sherlock decides that it'd be best if he could get rid of her. After all, Mycroft's taught him a thing or two about removing potential 'problems.'

Told from the point of view of the bank girl John saves and then dates. Guys, I am a total Johnlock shipper, and so is everyone else in this crack-fest, although they aren’t actually together. Samantha and her girlfriends are an absolute riot, and their impressions of both John and Sherlock are hysterical.

Small Steps - by crossroadrain, 16K, unrated, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson

"It's John's birthday and all his army buddies have got him a prostitute for a laugh.

A/B/O fic, where Sherlock is an unwilling omega stripper hired to entertain for John’s birthday get-together with a bunch of his army buddies. When John takes him aside to protect him from his army buddies, he learns something more is going on. The writing is a little uneven, because the writer is not a native English speaker, but the story is quite good.

Endings - by Purple_Slippers_18, 3K, T, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson

Fifty years. Eighteen thousand two hundred and sixty two days. It was a long time to be alive, never mind the thirty-four years Sherlock had breathed before he'd met John, which the man in question most certainly did not. As far as Sherlock was concerned, his life – the one whose memories he hoarded like a dragon protecting caverns of stolen gold – began on that serendipitous January afternoon when two strangers met in the research labs at St. Bart's.

Not for those who can’t deal with MCD or find assisted suicide disturbing, but they’re so in love here. Retirement!Lock.

Mycroft arranges a marriage between Sherlock and John, allowing John to stay in the army and Sherlock to pay for rehab. They write each other letters, but have never met. I originally read this story on FF.net and loved it. I was delighted to find it on AO3, which is easier on my eyes.

Words of One Syllable and At A Loss- GwendolynnFiction, 101K across 2 works on FF.net, M, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson

The landmine at Baskerville leaves Sherlock deafened. Unable to stand living without his friend John agrees to learn to sign, but foreign languages cannot be learned in a void. Sherlock helps John learn to sign by finally learning to talk to him.

This was one of my early favorites when I first started reading Sherlock stories on fanfiction.net. The author has slightly different versions up on AO3, but I find these much more enjoyable, as their relationship just seems to work better. The followup story is what happens during the Moriarty trial and after the fall, when Sherlock has to return unexpectedly after John goes missing.

The Otter and the Hedgehog - by Trinity Fire, 23K on FF.net, T, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Mycroft Holmes/Greg Lestrade.

Just when John and Sherlock think they have time to rest after a case, they get an unexpected surprise... Unexpected, yes, and fluffy!

This is a little uneven, and has a very awkward, very weird self-insert OC, but Sherlock the otter wandering around the flat tucking John the hedgehog into his scarf to carry him everywhere is just too cute!

Letters to a Soldier - by Pakmai, 70K on FF.net, T, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson

Captain John Watson is a soldier in Afghanistan. Sherlock Holmes has just been admitted to a drug rehab facility, assigned to write a letter to an unknown soldier. He doesn't expect to get a letter back from someone as interesting as John. John doesn't expect to get letter from a recovering drug addict. Together they form an unlikely friendship through letters.

I’ll admit, it’s been a while since I read this one, but this series turned me into a big fan of epistolary fics. The follow-up fic, Letters to a High-Functioning Sociopath, finished after I’d stopped reading regularly on FF, so I admit I don’t know how the series ended.

Flare - by iMusicalMinji, 6K on FF.net, T, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson

John has a lot to learn about an elusive species when he ends up living with one. Like how he doesn't have to change under a full moon, how he is fireproof even if he cannot breathe fire himself, and how he loves the doctor. MythicalCreature!AU

A sweet dragon!Lock story, with some parental elements. Sherlock’s hoard made me laugh, and then I thought about it and it made sense.

asexuality/aromanticism as we know it rn is still a really new deal. back when i began blogging about all this (and even longer ago when i first began learning about asexuality) “aromantic” wasn’t a thing - or if it was, it wasn’t a thing i knew about. for a long time, the split attraction model wasn’t like a Big Deal to the ace community - you had your aces who didn’t like romance (and they were “all the way” ace) and your aces who did (and they were in the gray area lumped in with demisexual people, and gray aces were also not a thing people were really into? ironically we got called fakers and broken and the like, gatekeeping on AVEN was really ugly back then). that is totally different to how we do it now! which i think is good! the way we do it now is better probably! stuff changes!

but. i’ve had this blog for 8 or 9 years. i think i opened it up in 2010. the ace flag itself is only officially like 8? i think? years old. like just impress upon you how NEW stuff is and how OLD i am and how i was existing being my beautiful asexual self on tumblr before we even had a FLAG

so yeah, in my mind, aro & ace were just two variations of the same thing. i IDed primarily as asexual (and still do) and that’s how people referred to aspec folks as a whole so that’s the tag i used

changing tags on this hellsite is impossible. there’s a couple of extensions and websites that will give it a try BUT i have had very little luck with them when it came to tags with lots of posts and tags that are common words. one time i tried to replace my tag for a single word - i don’t remember what it was - and every time that word appeared in any tag whether it was with words or not it got replaced with the entire long phrase, which was a NIGHTMARE to clean up manually. another time i tried to change my personal tag, but the site kept running out of steam before it got to the end. it’s a big blog. something like 97k posts. i think my asexuality tag is like 50 or 60 pages long. i’m sure as fuck not changing those manually, and i’m too leery of automated tag changers not working and forcing me to clean up messes to do it in an automated way, so i’m stuck with this one if i want everything in one place ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

fwiw, i would love for my tag to be “aro & ace” or something like that. on posts with a lot of aro content i try to say in my tags “sorry thats my default tag it would be aro & ace if this site didn’t suck” but uh sometimes typing a disclaimer on every single post gets exhausting and so then i Dont! sorry. i am only one mortal imperfect human being who gets tired of typing shit sometimes

sirens in the beat of your heart. I don't really know, I just feel like it isn't good at all. the idea of what I wanted wasn't executed well.

8. Share or describe a favorite review you received:

I got a super long comment on ITWS when it was completed from a lovely reader named "roses_are_indigo" that made me cry and I have saved on my phone for when things are hard. I'll write it out below. I am writing this with misty eyes, tear-stains on my cheeks, and an ear-splitting grin plastered on my face. This fic was absolutely insane and I am probably even more insane by sitting and consuming it in one go knowing full well that I have heaps of schoolwork to get to, but hey, the insanity was totally worth it. I love what you did with the characters, I love the hozier title, I love your writing, and I love all those Shakespeare references. Basically what I am trying to say is that I absolutely love this fic with my whole heart. Thank you for helping me to smile, cheer, laugh, and positively bawl my eyes out crying, especially in those last few chapters. It was the emotional catharsis I desperately needed after a particularly tough semester at school. That ending was perfect and I like to imagine that Kaz and Inej become the criminal masterminds that they are in canon and a few years later, the rest of the crows join them for some heists and chaotic crow shenanigans. Again, thank you so much for this. I love this fic so much and I love you for sharing it to the world. <3

Honestly, writing for me is always hard, but it was hardest during NaNo, so much so that I gave up halfway through. I also really struggled through parts of Don't You Know, specifically part 3

10. A scene or character you wrote that surprised you:

Everything I write shocks me, but I think black lines surprised me the most. Just like, the entire thing. When I sit back and look at it, I am amazed at how well it was written. Another favorite of mine is the entirety of ch.7 from ITWS

Nina, please,” the voice says again. “I’m here,” she whimpers. “I’m right here.” She pulls the hand again, and feels something sticky between her fingers. Blood, hot and thick, drips from their intertwined hands. She tries to scream, to run, but she can’t. Something holds her down. Her mind feels fuzzy, and then frigid water fills her mouth. She is finally able to yell, to cry, but the sound is garbled. Water crowds her mouth, her nose, her throat. She claws at her neck. A voice, low and dark, laughs from the trees. Pekka’s face, covered in red, stares at her. The woods wrap around him like a frame, and when she meets his eyes, he smiles and terror grips her like a vice. “Fair is foul, and foul is fair,” he says. He laughs at her, an evil cackle that rings around her. Nina coughs and splutters on the water filling her lungs. She cries and cries, and no one comes.

I think I got better at imagery overall, and dialogue as well

13. How do you hope to grow next year:

I’d like to stop doubting my writing. I'd like to continue my growth with imagery. I'd like to write more, and experiment with different things, and finish my book.

14. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc):

Kaitlyn. No matter what I churn out, she's always there. I wouldn't have written nearly as much as I had this year without her.

15. Anything from your real life show up in your writing this year:

Nope

Not really - just WRITE. The more you write, the easier it is.

17. Any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year:

Looking forward to working on my book. I have some cressworth, kanej, and dramione ideas in the works, and I am SURE I'll have some steamy Jurdan ideas once the year starts.
