I got a fever and binged the entirety of Droners season 2 in two days
It was quite an adventure.
First the internet wasn't working, so I decided to watch the Monsuno DVDs i got from the library but our DVD player wasn't plugged into the tv. Then I got shocked by a broken wire because we have a rabbit in the house and I'm an idiot who didn't unplug the power before trying to sort out all the wires.
Turns out one of the cords I needed was broken anyways, so I resorted to calling dad and he helped me fix (read: turn it off and back on again) the internet. Since I already had the family computer open, I decided I might as well watch there.
Except the audio wasn't working. It later turned out there would have been a very easy fix, as the only problem was that the radio thingy that's linked to the family computer's speakers was turned off. I've dealt with this very situation dozens of times, but I had a fever and the computer was in a different place than it had been the last few years, so I didn't think of it.
Instead I decided to try headphones, but the audio quality was so bad it wasn't worth it just to avoid the battle with my laptop. When my dad got home, he called me into the room and asked why the computer was being weird and whenever he clicked on stuff it did something other than what it was supposed to do. It took me about 4 seconds to work out the problem, which was that I'd accidentally set the headphones down on the control key. I'm never going to let this one go!
Anyways, binge watching went well until the last freaking episode, where my laptop decided it had had enough. (In my laptop's defence, it has to deal with hundreds of browser tabs and is literally held together by tape.) The animation started getting choppy and everything slowed down until I was dealing with seconds-per-frame. Restarting my laptop (twice!) somehow made the problem worse.
Eventually I had to dig up Flickfetch and just download the episode. It was somehow still worth all the trouble
Well, now I can finally read the 2 (actually 4 by now) fics on Ao3 without having to fear spoilers!

I'm a tad late to the Absolute Zero party, but before I start screaming about how good episode 1 was, a little background:
I've not watched a single show directed by New Siwaj. I've watched one (1) show written by him -- Double Savage, and if I never think about that show ever again, it will still be too soon. I have zero minimal New Siwaj baggage and will therefore be the control subject of the Absolute Zero watch experience.
Now that that's out of the way, Y'ALL. THIS EPISODE. WAS SO GOOD. I LOVE sad stories that make me feel like my heart is being punched out of my chest, and this show is already so goddamn sad. Suansoon's parents have been dead for SIX years, and he's lonely and grieving and depressed, and @twig-tea made the incredible observation that he also seems stuck in time, unable to move on from his loss. He meets Ongsa in an adorable movie theatre meet-cute that spoke so deeply to my sucker-for-classic-romance-tropes heart.
Tumblr media
And it seems like Ongsa might already be aware of the time loop shenanigans, from him pursuing Suansoon so quickly -- "I wished Suansoon to be my boyfriend", to the unexplained tears he shed after watching Suansoon just smile and enjoy his company (and an icecream, yum!). Which adds to the intrigue, and to the overall melancholia of the show -- Ongsa wanting a relationship with Suansoon, just being present in Soon's life and making memories, even though he (potentially) knows in advance that it's gonna end in tragedy is some Arrival levels of sadness I was not expecting.
And most importantly, it's not all grey and gloom. The overall tone of the episode was definitely melancholic, yet the lighter moments of laughter, domesticity (cc @troubled-mind), and just.. contentment that Soon experiences in Ongsa's presence did not feel out of place. It was seamless and flowed well with the undercurrent of sorrow. And when I shared this with @bengiyo, he said, and I quote "Exactly, that's why I knew (the show) was gonna fuck us up". And he is absolutely correct. And I cannot wait to go fetal on the floor and just sob over these characters when the show finally decides to ruin us.
Tumblr media
P.S: There are two sad gay shows currently on air (I Feel You Linger In The Air, my beloved) involving 1. time shenanigans and 2. smoking hot men that @lurkingshan, @waitmyturtles and I can't stop ogling (though @waitmyturtles is currently alone in the "simping for Pastry Nat" camp) which is all a long-winded way of saying that we're having the time of our goddamn lives!

Trick or treat! 🍬
Babs! <333 so i actually had an idea for a Louigan fic last night while in the shower (because where else do ideas sprout lol). Louise wakes up in the hospital from a head injury and can't remember what happened to her. the doctors explain that she's fine, just hit her head really hard, be careful with your stitches, etc. but then who shows up with her family when she's released? Logan Bush, and she's extremely confused because aren't they enemies? why the hell is he here? commence her family awkwardly explaining that "uh Lou, he's your fiance." "HE'S WHAT??" Boom! memory loss trope. and now Logan has to somehow convince her that no, really, they're engaged and in love and junk, it's not a trick or a prank. and Lou being her stubborn as self refusing to believe it at first because there's just no frickin' way she fell for Logan Berry Bush of all people. HEA of course because i'm a sucker for them lol.

Review: The Liminal Zone
Tumblr media
Author: Junji Ito
Date: 13/02/2023
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
———————————————————————————————
While I am a big fan of Ito's work, I haven't had the time to pick up some of his newer works up until now (when I forgot to take a book of my own to read on my way home, so my boyfriend offered me a few from his collection). "The Liminal Zone" is another collection of short stories, featuring 4 of his works: Weeping Woman Way, Madonna, The Spirit Flow of Aokigahara and Slumber. He has worked on them during the pandemic and had been publishing them online before they ultimately got published as a physical book.
Ito's quite self-conscious about all his newer work, repeatedly saying how his stories aren't as good as they used to be, but compared to his older work, I'd say the stories in "The Liminal Zone" are definitely some of his best.
Weeping Woman Way is a story about a girl who suddenly can't stop crying after an encounter with a hired weeping woman on a funeral. In its core, it is a tale about the desperation of grief, sadness and depression women experience as they experience loss, not just of their beloved, but thousands of other people they have not personally known. Only the women are affected by the crying malady, and only other women truly understand the suffering it invites. Their sorrow becomes almost palpable through Ito's provoking illustrations. He has perfectly enraptured the pure helplessness that comes with sadness.
While Madonna was actually a really solid story with amazing Christian symbolism, the salt powers of the main antagonist take away from the fluidity of the plot. Ito's creative process for a story usually starts off with a specific source of inspiration that he decides to incorporate into his story, but he often doesn't have the right skills to blend it into the story properly, so some parts seem forced and unnecessary. Still, Madonna is a great read with some gorgeous, creepy visuals, especially of the statue of Mary crying bloody tears and the panels where the vice-principal shows her true angry and resentful nature.
The Spirit Flow of Aokigahara is the weakest story of the four, featuring a sick man who decides to kill himself somewhere deep in the forest, but finds some sort of cave from which spirits come out at night in the form of a raging river. The visuals are definitely unnerving, but the plot itself is quite shallow and somewhat silly.
The idea behind Slumber is nothing new, but it is nonetheless riveting. Ito took the famous The Killer in Me horror trope where the main character has no recollection of their crimes and spins it into a narrative where they have no obvious connection to the victims, but have memory flashes of killing them. There's a few minor issues I had with this story, mostly regrading Ito's explanation of the memories, but overall it was an exciting and compelling read. I'm a sucker for this trope and I am glad Ito decided to do his take on it.
The majority of negative comments regarding Ito's new work are mainly concentrated on his biggest weakness: mending plot holes. Ito's a writer who stays true to his ideas, so when they don't necessarily add up, he offers the reader a fairly simple explanation. In hindsight, yes, it negatively impacts his story, but I'd argue it's also his redeeming quality. A lot of his most impactful and well know work wouldn't even exist if he limited himself to completely drawn out ideas. If you prefer carefully planned out plots, his work might not be to your liking, but Ito definitely offers a truly unique and recognizable experience of horror that is worth to give a chance.
"The Liminal Zone" is an excellent choice for both old and new lovers of Ito's work. It features some great stories, it's filled with gorgeous, gory and horrific illustrations, and it's an interesting read.

for the fic trope thing!!!
how do you feel about accidental (or non accidental) child acquisition, no powers au and memory loss?
Child acquisition: C: Neutral. A good author might be able to sell it, but a bad one will kill it deader than dead. I've got nothing against kidfic in general, but I'm not particularly maternal and I find it hard to invest my energy in child characters!
No Powers AU: B: Like it. Not one of my bigger cravings, but it can scratch a certain itch if I’m in the right mood.I'm a sucker for AUs in general, so while I'm more likely to write an AU that's fantasy or sci-fi based, or just canon divergence, there are LOTS of no powers stories that pique my interest.
Memory loss: Was answered here!

Tropes in the Queer Croc WIP
I made this trope map aesthetic a while ago and wanted to share. It made me think about the tropes I included in the Queer Croc WIP.
Tumblr media
Unreliable Narrator
Tumblr media
There is nothing more entertaining and harder than writing an unreliable narrator, but by god do I love it. I enjoy the layers and complexity it can add to a narrative and even though it requires several drafts, by the end you have the satisfaction of knowing all the clues are there for the reader to find if they're looking.
In the QueerCrocWIP, I was able to combine the unreliable narrator with the inherent bias of memoirs and historical memory allowing me to examine that fine line between objective "true" history and the subjective nature of any historical record. Add the fact that Kingsley, one of the MCs, is on trial for war crimes and boy does the truth get warped.
I utilize footnotes to point out where the narrator is wrong, but even the footnotes should be taken with a grain of salt since the person adding the footnotes (Alex, the other MC) has their own agenda they're trying to push. Alex may be more trustworthy than Kingsley, but that doesn't mean they're truthful.
Apparently, there are four unreliable narrator archetypes (I think they're missing a few but this article does a good job summarizing what an unreliable narrator is and how each archetype works).
Kingsley is the Liar archetype. The unreliable narrator who purposely misleads while Alex is the grieving unreliable narrator. They mislead because they cannot see the truth beyond their loss.
Some of my favorite examples of unreliable narrators are:
Non-linear timeline
Tumblr media
I am a sucker for any story that is told in a non-linear fashion. I particularly love it when the timelines touch each other, either literally like in timeline movies, or metaphorically. It's interesting to think that the past shapes our present which shapes our future but in a weird way the future shapes the past, because the future shapes our understanding of the past. What we believe now shapes how we look at Victorian England for example and what we believe 100 years from now will change how we look at the present (as well as Victorian England). But, in real life we can't step back and look at the past, present, and future simultaneously to see the whole picture. Literature, however, gives us that ability.
That's what I do in the Queer Croc Book. The memoir itself is both the past and the present (present because it's the main storyline, but past because of the future narrative) and the interviews take place in the present/future (present because it's Alex's main storyline, but future because it's the future Kingsley's memoir creates).
The footnotes Alex adds to Kingsley's memoir are literally the future commenting on the past, which warps Alex's perspective because they have the "benefit" of hindsight but also the emotional baggage that comes from living through the future created by Kingsley's memoir. Whereas Kingsley writing the memoir is also the future commenting on the past since he's writing it after going through the future he created. He's more aware of his power over the past whereas Alex acts as if they're "clarifying" the past, not adding their own interpretation.
Whew. Got all of that? Haha. Basically, it's time travel without time travel.
Some of my favorite non-linear stories are:
Found and Lost Family
Tumblr media
I'm a love X-men because, at its core, it's a story of found family. I love the idea of people who the world hates-and sometimes wants to kill-finding companionship with each other. However, because I also love messy, angsty relationships, I also love when that fellowship is broken because of a betrayal or a misunderstanding or a hard choice was made and the characters either grow or go down a darker path. While I enjoy a good family reunion, it can grow a little stale because of the inevitability of the reunion. When it's not handled well, it doesn't heighten the stakes, but dulls them.
In the Queer Croc WIP, the crafting of a found family and the breaking of it is a reflection of what rebellion and great loss can do to people, but also examines the foundation of a found family. If you only find each other because you want to fight against something, what happens when that something changes for people? Or when people get tired of the fight and want to move on? Or the various ways people deal with grief and how that can exasperate existing but mostly tolerated tensions? Or what if people simply change and grow and that family that saved your life as a teen is no longer the family you need as an adult?
I haven't really found a good example of found families shattering without the healing/forgiveness phase in media but some of my favorite found families are:
Expansive world and politics
Tumblr media
I'm a fantasy writer which means my world is vast and filled with many different beings and my politics is overly complicated and often world ending. And I love it. I love the ridiculously large worlds with centuries worth of history that worms its way into the main text. I love how Tolkien set up his world in terms of lore and world building. I love creating different religions and myths. I love thinking about how different beings will interact with the world. I have at least ten different animal-human hybrid races and they all have different needs than their human counterparts. It's just so much fun spending hours at a time trying to imagine what a world with gargoyles or crocodile people looks like.
I'm also have a masters in international relations, so I'm all about the politics. I think I lean more towards the Godfather side of politics than Tolkien in the sense that politics is a core tenet of any of my stories and that it's a brutal and unforgiving art. It attracts the ruthless and the sycophants and the absolute assholes and politics is often practiced in a way designed to hurt the populace instead of help, but don't worry the rich will keep getting richer and the law breakers will always be protected from any government sanctioned consequences. Sort of why my characters often determine we need a revolution, which comes with its own pitfalls. I also support the Peaky Blinder's thesis that a politician is simply a legitimate gangster.
Some of my favorite examples of expansive worldbuilding are:
Some of my favorite examples of politics are:
Wild Child adopted by grumpy person
Tumblr media
There's not really much more to add here. I LOVE it when a wild child adopts a grumpy person as their parent. I honestly really love wholesome child-parent dynamics when it's a dynamic of choice. I hate the idea that blood equals family, because it's a toxic mindset that can harm more than it helps. But if someone makes the effort to actually be there for you and to love you, warts and all, and can grieve with you and help you process your own trauma, it's absolute perfection
Favorite examples:
Gender Non-conforming fatale
Tumblr media
Like any sane person, I love a good femme fatale. A "dangerous" woman who will do whatever and whoever she has to get what she wants. I especially love her when she's not "redeemed" by love or the hero or whatever. When she remains as ruthless as she started.
As a non-binary person, I love the trope even more when it's a trans person or gender nonconforming person who's the fatale. I haven't seen this very often in media and even the Babylon Berlin gif I've included in this section doesn't count. Svetlana presents as male to achieve certain objectives, but there's no indication that she truly identifies as male or nonbinary or bigender. But I still love her and would probably die for her, haha
In the Queer Croc WIPk, my gender non-conforming fatale is Oisin O'Connor a sex worker, nightclub owner, and one of the most powerful politicians in Heva.
Tumblr media
Artwork by @braveburattino
Oisin is as comfortable in overalls as he is in stiletto's and a backless dress. He identifies as a man, but, like most Ilkhatal, challenges all human concepts of what makes something masculine. He just does it in the extreme-in true Oisin fashion. He is one of Kingsley's deadliest allies (except for maybe the Demon king). He's destroyed people's lives, stripped them of everything they owned and valued, shattered all of their hopes and dreams, and even arranged a few murders. He'll do literally anything for Kingsley, except die destitute and unwanted.
Alex's relationship with Oisin is interesting because they only know Oisin through Kingsley's memoir and Oisin's own letters and diary, but they find themselves siding with Oisin more times than not. It's almost like the detective who falls in love with Laura in the movie Laura, except I don't think Alex is in love with Oisin. Definitely charmed by him, but who isn't?
Favorite femme fatales:
Broken Idealist
Tumblr media
The next biggest noir archetype is the cynical or broken idealist who is usually a private detective or news reporter. They pretend they don't believe in anything, but deep down there is still that code or that silly faith in humanity they've tried to suppress. Whether it be avenging a partner you hated or fighting for the fragment that remains of a city's soul, these broken idealists will fight the entire world if they have to.
Alex isn't completely cynical in this book. It's more like you're watching them break in real time as the few things that got them through the war are no longer enough to keep themselves together. It's almost like they compartmentalized all the doubts to get through the war and now that it's over and Kingsley, the crocodile person who tortured Alex's wife, is on trial, they can no longer hold everything back.
So they latch onto Kingsley's trial in hopes of restoring order in their own mind, but what are they actually accomplishing if Kingsley hangs, but his enablers, not only walk off scot free, but return to politics or business as if nothing happened? And then there's the mess with their wife. Alex has a lot to deal with and they are in no position to deal with any of it.
Favorite examples of broken idealists:
Broken people learning how to love
Tumblr media
Sometimes your best efforts aren't enough. Sometimes you can't save the world or undo a wrong. Sometimes all you can do is love another human being as the rest of the world falls apart around you. Sometimes the only way to heal is to let someone else speak with your demons.
I'm a huge sucker for two (or more) people finding each other and trauma bonding. I don't even need them to actual heal. They can indulge in their darkness, as long as they do it together and find some sort of comfort or cathartic release. Hell, they could destroy the world together if it brought them joy. I just want the two broken people to find their own special happiness, even if only for a moment.
There are several characters throughout the wip who find each other when they're at their lowest point, but I think the biggest example of this trope is Alex's relationship with their wife, Christine. Can't get into it too much because of spoilers, but they've been through a lot of shit and both characters are broken a hundred different ways and all they have is each other. No one else can really reach them or help them. However, even if they share their pain and help each other heal, there's no guarantee their relationship will survive the process.
My favorite examples of this trope:
Uncomfortable interrogations and Courtroom Drama
I love courtroom dramas that aren't about the court room. I don't care about the legal technicalities. I love it when a courtroom drama explores the many ways prejudices, bias, politics, and the outside world can affect a trial, skewering a justice system that doesn't really work. I care more about the moral dilemma of trusting a broken system to correctly punish those responsible for a crime, when in reality it's the entire system that's responsible. A single courtroom and a single case can't undo the damage caused by a broken system and when the verdict's announced, it can mean so little because what did it actually accomplish?
I also love it when the protagonist talks with the antagonist, both sides trying to break each other, and so they end up sharing much more than they ever expected and at the end you either walk away realizing that the antagonist is far worse than you imagined or they are only a thread in a tapestry of horror.
Alex's main storyline is interviewing Kingsley, the crocodile person who tortured their wife, while reporting on Kingsley's trial for war crimes. They struggle with balancing their own vendetta against being a reporter and uncovering the full extent of, not only Kingsley's crimes, but the crimes of his enablers. But will any of that matter if Kingsley and his enablers get off scot free? I think this scene from Judgment of Nuremberg explains Alex's situation pretty well. In this clip, Tad is a prosecutor prosecuting Nazi judges. The trials have been going on for a while and all the big name Nazis are now dead and people are beginning to question the purpose of the trial. He just exhibited evidence of the Holocaust in court and is preparing for his closing statements for the next day. In this clip, his boss basically tells him: "Stop being mean to Nazis. We need German support to fight the Soviets" and he replies, "Tell me, what was the war all about?"

My favourite ML fanfiction tropes
I was going to write about this when this post appeared. So I thought, why should I delay it? Such an interesting topic. Here we go!
Adrien accidentally finding out about Marinette's crush on him and being overjoyed that such an amazing girl loves him, even if he can't reciprocate her feelings.
Adrien finding out about Marinette's crush on him and starting to realise that he has fallen for her too.
Accidental identity reveals, especially ones due to a slip of the tongue.
One-sided reveal, when one of them knows that the other knows.
Hurt/comfort scenes, especially Ladynoir/Ladrien ones.
People discussing Ladybug and Chat Noir in the presence of their civilian alter egos.
Ladybug being smitten by Chat Noir, but denying that.
Time-travel, especially when future Adrinette kids are there.
Marinette asking Chat Noir’s help to confess to her crush.
Since I'm a sucker for Ladrien fics, I must mention:
Ladrien fics tropes:
Adrien gushing about Ladybug in school and Marinette or Alya (or both of them) overhearing that.
Ladybug and Adrien being stuck together during an akuma attack and Adrien using the opportunity to confess his feelings to Ladybug.
Ladybug being invited to an event organised by Gabriel Agreste, and during the event Adrien only has eyes for her (Chat Noir somehow doesn't show up).
Ladybug ends up in Adrien's room (e.g. patrolling alone while it's cold outside or visiting Adrien after an akuma attack to check on him), which usually leads to fluffy scenes and/or love confessions/kisses/blushing etc.
Adrien finds out about Ladybug's crush on him (e.g. she let it slip in an interview).
Angsty (not salty!) tropes :
Chat Noir leaving the team (or trying to) due to feeling unneeded or/and depressed, and Ladybug being heartbroken by his absence. There must be a happy ending preceded by hurt/comfort scenes.
One of the heroes is injured and the other must deal with the possibility of losing their partner.
Marinette getting rejected by Adrien and being comforted by Chat Noir as Ladybug (this might lead to the identity reveal).
Memory loss.
Anything related to Ladybug's Chat Blanc trauma.

I do like how Rick is adding things or changing things to the way he wished to do with the books. I really do hope we see more of Percy at camp! The one thing I’m not looking forward to is Clarisse and Chris😭 Clarisse is so lesbian coded, I physically can not imagine her with a guy
I can’t wait for the when Will comes as well as Nico and Bianca (rip my girl)
Nah cuz I also always daydream about Sam😭 now it’s either Sam, Clarisse or Dior. I love daydreaming tho but it’s feeding my delusions to much
Im loving Ebony’s story so far! I love that she’s protective of Annabeth! Also we love a godly parent that’s there for their kids. Nyx eats them all up.
Her abilities are so cool tho love how she accidentally found out about them😭 and rip the memory loss, Ebony better still remember Clarisse or me and Clarisse will have to go to therapy together. I always forget about the fatal flaws💀
Im praying to BUDDHA that clarisse is gonna be a sapphic, if not then alright i guess 😞 girl i daydream about my fav characters like rn, im in class and should be reciting my notes but the only thing on my mind is either sam or clarisse whoopsies.
Thank you! Honestly its a silly thing from me because i haven't read the books, i love annabeth sm,i'm shielding her from luke 🙄 also nyx might be one of the good godly parents ever
babe she'll remember her loved ones! She parallels percy a lot since i imagine the two as a good duo, found family trope because im a sucker for that. Ebony may or may not die LOL

Which whump genres do you like, which tropes do you prefer and which are a big no-no for you? Share your preferences in whump please:)
I like lady whump and nsfwhump in general.
A big no-no is just male whumper x female whumpee. I'm also someone who doesn't read much nsfwhump, actually. I like to write, I can enjoy the prompts I see, but I barely read it.
More a pet peeves than a no-no, I'm not the biggest fan of drabbles/ficlets where characters are just names Whumper/Whumpee/Caretaker. I don't mind in prompts, but I don't like in actual writing. (I also skip when there's a he).
Now, onto tropes and some dynamics I like it, it's a dumpster and I added the ones I could remember at the moment:
(notice I'm way more into emotional than physical whump)
pet whump, dehumanization (especially when it features it/its pronouns for a person cw)
werewolf & shifters whump
vigilante/hero whump, love some street-level hero being beating up
romantic caretaker x whumpee
older sister whumper x younger sister whumpee
cheesy moment of kissing scars
bad coping mechanism & caretaker doing her best to help
I'm a sucker for memory loss
even more of a sucker for "coming back wrong"
emotional whump! PTSD, depression, the non-linear but beautiful road to recovery
"are they a villain or just broken?"
long-term captivity & multiple whumpers/owners across time
whumpee who can't stand her own name after what whumper has done
childhood trauma caused by a parent or a sibling, the angst potential
power-related whump
self-inflicted whump (often related to the one above)
small whumper x large whumpee, whumpee that could easily throw whumper around
defiant whumpee
some level of stockolm syndrome, but when treated as the shitty thing that it is
favorite physical whump be: stab wounds, gunshot wounds, bloodied knuckles, broke nose, migraines
I also like some soft whump like cold/mild flu, mild allergic reaction, period cramps
comfort: cuddling, nesting, gentle sex
There's probably more.

It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey Review
Tumblr media
Plot
Piper Bellinger is fashionable and influential, and her reputation as a wild child means the paparazzi are constantly on her heels. When too much champagne and an out-of-control rooftop part land Piper in the slammer, her stepfather decides enough is enough. So he cuts her off and sends her and her sister to learn some responsibility running their late father's dive bar...in Westport, Washington.
Piper hasn't even been in Westport five minutes when she meets big, bearded (and grumpy) Brendan Taggart, who thinks she won't last a week outside of Beverly Hills. So what if Piper can't do math and the idea of sleeping in a shabby apartment with bunk beds gives her hives? How bad could it really be? She's determined to show her stepfather- and the hot, grumpy local- that she's more than just a pretty face.
Except it's a small town, and everywhere she turns, she bumps into Brendan. The fun-loving socialite and the gruff fisherman are polar opposites, but there's an undeniable attraction simmering between them. Piper doesn't want any distractions, especially feelings for a man who sails off into the sunset for weeks at a time. Yet as she reconnects with her past and begins to feel at home in Westport, Piper starts to wonder if the cold, glamorous life she knew is what she truly wants. LA is calling her name, but Brendan- and this town full of memories- may have already caught her heart.
Discussion
WHERE'S MY GRUMPY, BORDERLINE SUGAR DADDY FISHERMAN TO SPOIL ME?! Okay, okay, all jokes aside, I enjoyed this book far more than I thought. I'm an absolute sucker for the grumpy and sunshine trope.
I liked Piper's character development and I love her relationship with her sister. When Brendan would narrate the chapter, my heart melted when I read how much he truly loved her, viewed her as the most perfect woman, in the works.
One thing I do wish that we saw was Piper calling Daniel and her mother out on their bullshit. Piper and Hannah, while their plan to restore the bar to convince Daniel to bring them home was based on a selfish reason, they didn't deserve to basically be ghosted by him.
And Maureen- I can completely understand not wanting to return to your dead relative's memorial, but to completely ghost his mother, never return to his hometown, and deny your own DAUGHTERS, the humans YOU created with HIM, the closure that they deserve...girl, no. Just...no...please get therapy. I know grief and the loss of a loved one can cause people to change how they act (me included...), but still. Opal was going through extreme grief and you two could've grieved together. I hope the two women can reconcile one day.
I know there's a sequel, so maybe Maureen will get a redemption arc? I also hope to learn more about her, maybe my first impression of her will change.
There are some content/trigger warnings:
Medical emergency
Grief & loss depiction
D*ath of a spouse/parent
Drowning
There's also a lot of spice if you catch my drift.

4/5

1, 5, and 12 for the fandom ask! :)
20 Fandom Asks
If you could hit any character without repercussions, who would it be?
At the moment, Dean Boland comed to mind. Would love a chance to give him a good whack. He has earned it and it has been a good minute since someone has smacked him around ya know?
What is your favorite overused trope?
Ohh, that's kinda hard. I'm a sucker for a lot of the typical tropes. I guess my favorite is like rivalry type/adversarial ones where the Characters can't stand each other or feel the other is just the bane of their existence but then they also can't seem to ignore them and are always aware of them despite trying to act like they Still Really Don't Like them. Even better if they're thrown into situations or dynamics that make them get closer despite their best efforts to avoid each other like they're connected no matter what and then they develop a friendly relationship that still involves getting on each other's nerves and teasing each other but they got each other's backs now.
Also, the classic fake dating trope.
If you could change one ending to a book/show/game/etc, what would you change about it?
Well, an easy one would be for the show, Chuck. Spoilers Ahead: I didn't like how it ended with Sarah not remembering anything and them starting from zero again. I mean, it gave for a nice parallel to Chuck and Sarah's beginning, and it was a sweet scene, but it was just rather anticlimactic and felt like it didn't give a satisfying conclusion to all that they had went through.
It's been a while since I watched it so I can't exactly where I would have wanted it to go, but I just am not a big fan of memory loss storylines as a whole. I would've liked to have seen Chuck and Sarah begin their journey as a family. They earned it that at least.

They were so cute 😭💕
Thank you for the ask!

So I've read a few opinions on chapter 7 and i would like to politely chime in.. I don't think JK is the bigger person or namjoon is the monster everyone is making him out to be.. However I do feel the OC is really robbed of her right to choose... Which is kinda the point because she is bound by the invisible string of fate and she tried to rebel against it by choosing a love that she built by sheer chemistry and not predisposed forces of destiny.
Namjoon, I dont think he was forcible towards her-he was however broaching the inevitable and unsaid rather than stalling it.. However his possessiveness is very unnecessary at this point because he needs to back off and give OC the time and space she needs to mourn her loss of choice.
Jk being the bigger person? I won't call him that however I feel he was mature enough to step aside and not come in between chosen mates
(I'm obsessed with mates incase you haven't noticed🤣. Trope: oh they were mate
Me:🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰)
It really will be awkward for the chosen ones in the next installments bcz I sense hostility and amicability being glued together by the bond.. Oh poor JK🙁 I wish you weren't so sweet and mate-less bcz your soul deserves a thousand million smooches.
Honestly I feel like we're judging namjoon prematurely 🤣 because right now it seems like a debate between red flags versus green flags 🤣 this OC needs to boss up though.. She has spent her entire life just being worried 😭 live it up my dude!
Hmmm this is a very interesting take from the entire chapter. I can see everyone judging Namjoon for that one comment and I can't blame anyone for it lol
Naturally speaking, both Namjoon and Jungkook were just being realistic about the situation. What Namjoon said wasn't completely wrong, but it was untimely placed that it seemed a bit harsher than what he might intend it to be, while Jungkook decisions stemmed from the fact that he would only be in the way of OC in dealing with this soulmate bond that she had never given the chance to experience. She has been haunted by the bond for as long as she has it and now she's being forced to deal with it just when she's moving on, so the situation is pretty hard for everyone to act rationally.
As always, we'll be getting a clearer picture of what's going on inside these characters' heads soon.
I have to admit, I'm also a sucker for soulmate stories so I got invested in this one too (I never planned it to be this deep but here we are lol)

Thank you so much for this. It's been up and down for me for the past week cause memories will always return when they've been a part of your life for so long. I'm trying to stay positive and use this moment to grow as I heal. hope this season is kind to you as well <33

Please tell me more about why you like sheith, I'm very curious to hear the rest of it.
(alright luckily i had the beginning of this saved elsewhere when tumblr just randomly sent it early so imma just begin by pasting. also spoilers for voltron s4 obv)
the original ask was something like “curious why u like sheith? ive thought abt it and i think i prefer klance”
rubs hands 2gether Thank U for Asking
first of all, thats chill! if klance is ur thing, fuckin go for itmy dude, have a great time with that shit. the fandom’s huge andtheres tons of content. im all for ppl shippin what they want and imnot here to tell someone to ship or not ship something. if u do trulywant to know why im a sheith tho, buckle the fuck up cause im awashin sheith feelings at every moment and i got Things 2 say
alright so the main thing with sheith is that it feels realhealthy and good. (well it did. things are weird this season bc shiromay or may not be a clone but up until his disappearance at least.)they’re rly good abt checking in with each other to see how theother one’s doing and feeling, and they lean on each other a lotfor support. they also treat each other as equals and respect each other’s choices (again, with minor exceptions in the current season). they got that good good hidden backstory together. they got that good good star crossed lovers thing goin on where the universe keeps ripping them apart, fucking them over and tossing them back together more fucked up than before and my dude i Eat That Shit UP. also that good good height difference.the show gives them lots of moments where they’re either alone in a room together havin a private moment or havin an equally private moment in front of the whole fuckin team where fuckin everybody can see them (like the first Hug tm). they’re openly physically intimate with each other (which keith is not with anyone else) and they’re not like. ashamed of that. there’s so much canon content i cry daily.
here lemme break it down
we know they knew each other in the garrison, and not just like in passing, like acquaintances, but enough that keith was the only person there to see shiro off when the kerberos mission launched. in s1ep1 lance says of shiro “omg that guys my hero” and of keith “you’re my rival” but neither shiro nor keith know who lance even fuckin is. bc presumably they didnt hang out. everyone in the garrison knows who keith and shiro are but they - keith especially it seems like - dont keep track of the other students. also theres this whole fanon thing where shiro and matt were best friends in the garrison and hung out all the time before kerberos, but in s4 when matt greets shiro hes incredibly stiff and awkward and calls him sir and shiro just goes “pidge never gave up on u buddy” which i guess could be a clone thing but could also be him bein like “i totally did give up on u tho, whatever” (and i can totally buy that considering how pidge’s whole personal arc this whole time has been looking for matt and their dad, and while shiro has been supportive of that, he’s also been like hey dude that’s not our top priority as a team). so from that i infer that matt and shiro werent best buds in the garrison, and that he must have spent a lot more of his time with keith bc in s2ep1 keith makes it clear that shiro made a significant impact on his life and that he still thinks about things shiro said to him before kerberos. which we havent seen. bc theyre hiding the pre-kerberos backstory from us and i cry. also their flashbacks in s1ep2 (i think, i dont exactly remember which ep but i think its that one) when they all put on the headsets and we see their fondest memories, shiro’s is the day they were separated and keith’s is the day they found each other again like jesus.
then there’s keith’s first scene in the show. the first thing we see him doing is kicking the shit out of like three garrison guys to rescue shiro. we get that close up of him touching shiro’s unconscious fuckin face and his first line in the whole show is him saying shiro’s name. like shit dude how am i supposed 2 not ship that. the first time keith and lance interact, its lance butting in on that moment and keith being like “who the fuck are u” and its. uncomfortable. we also know that keith has been livin alone in the desert and obsessing over these lion carvings bc he got kicked out of the garrison for basically insubordination sometime after shiro went missing. we get that scene in the shack where keith talks abt feeling lost until shiro showed up and everyone else in the room looking all confused and uncomfortable as these two dudes who clearly already know each other well and have been separated for like a year just stare into each other’s eyes or what the fuck ever. also the scene outside the shack where keith comes and finds shiro and puts a hand on his shoulder and asks him how hes doing - theyre alone for that part. also worth mentioning is that keith has no hesitation touching shiro’s galra tech arm, whereas lance hesitates before shaking his hand. we see a bunch of times that keith is touch averse with almost everyone except shiro, in a way that indicates a degree of prior familiarity and a good understanding of boundaries that keith hasnt had the time or inclination to set up with lance, hunk, pidge, allura, coran etc. also the one time he holds lance when sendack attacks the castle and lance is unconscious, lance sort of blows it off later and basically goes “no homo” when keith brings it up so that was a bummer
i also love some of the Pauses they put into shiro and keith’s dialogue, some of them are just. so choice. like when keith proposes a crazy plan that puts him in danger and shiro just takes a sec, closes his eyes, then goes “alright i’ll back u up, do what u gotta do” like!!!! boi!!!!!! thats good shit. also in s2ep9 during the blade of marmora trial when keith is basically having this nightmare about shiro rejecting him because of his connection to the galra, (which real actual shiro can see because this whole ep was a fuckin fanfiction) and he does that same thing where hes like “shiro... *pause, close eyes for Just a sec* you’re like a brother to me” which! by the way!! i have said the same thing!! to a friend i had a crush on!!! who was straight!!!! and i was a little baby who didnt know i was into girls yet and we used to say we were like sisters bc i? didnt know i?? was gay???? we shared her bed whenever i stayed over and she really did see me as a sister and i would just lie next to her and daydream about touching her boobs,, anyway keith is so relatable there i could yell forever but continuing on,
can we, real quick, talk abt the first time keith flies the black lion? bc in s2ep1 hes not the black paladin yet. real shiro is still around. and keith legit goes up to black, puts a hand on her big ole nose and goes “ur boi is in trouble, we gotta help him” and she goes “yeah dude hop in” like?????????????? thats some fanfic shit again! black Knows! also dont even talk to me abt how many times keith and shiro yell each others names in that ep its unreal. also the trope (that i eat the fuck up every time) of one member of the otp lying trapped and injured somewhere and talking to the other member of the otp thru a helmet comm or whatever and they cant see each other but they can hear each others voices, so they have to keep talking to like reassure each other they’re both still alive and okay?!!! im such a sucker for that shit!!!! ummmmm the fact that shiro keeps reassuring keith that hes fine when theres a gaping glowing wound in his side and hes like visibly in pain, clenching his teeth, eyes closed, groaning, sweat beading on his forehead, the whole fuckin thing?? and josh knocked it outta the park with shiro’s voice in that ep making him sound like he was trying not to sound hurt and exhausted so that keith wouldn’t worry too much like Fuck me up!! smiling thru the pain when keith talks abt how much shiro changed his life and made him a better person??? boi!!!!!
then there are the times when shiro talks abt something happening to him and keith taking over as voltron’s leader, and keith gets all panicked about it like he cant stand the thought of losing shiro again (this happens a bunch of times but the ones that are coming to mind are s2ep1 and s2ep9 bc. again. those are the fanfic episodes). and then he Does lose him again and he’s so clearly grieving, lashing out at the rest of the team, super obviously feeling shiro’s loss more than the others (and lance is a real dick about it a bunch of times which really rubbed me wrong), going out to look for him over and over bc he wants to believe so bad that shiro’s out there somewhere. omg the “please no” when the black lion accepts him that shit Fucked me right up!! he wants to honor shiro’s wishes!! but some part of him knows that’s like admitting that shiro’s gone and isn’t coming back. and then!!!!!! when they find kuron and its just the red lion and the galra ship floating alone in space just like. gently drifting toward each other. keith’s little tired smile there. fuck me up. and then we find out in the next scene that keith has been the only one in shiro (kuron)’s room while he’s recovering and shiro (kuron) hasnt bothered to shave or cut his hair or get dressed yet and he lets keith see him like that and not the rest of the team. fuck. keith looks Exhausted in that scene. hes got bags under his eyes, hes kinda hunched in on himself, arms crossed, like something in him Knows this isnt his boi but he wants to believe it’s him so bad and its. god. its a lot. and Then when hes turning to leave and kuron is like “how many times will u have to save me before this is over” and keith’s face just relaxes into this legitimately genuine smile when he says “as many times as it takes” like!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! fuck me
this is where it starts gettin awkward with them bc kuron isnt shiro and he doesnt treat keith the way shiro would but he Tries, like after keith fucks up that one mission and kuron comes and finds him (again, in private) to touch his shoulder and be like “im proud of u boi” when keith clearly Did Not Do A Good Job and keith just looks bummed like “thats. thats not tru” and it Hurts me bc we know real shiro doesnt do fake praise. also kuron orders keith to put himself in danger more than once and doesnt give a shit that keith and the others get hurt because of it which also real shiro would never do - we’ve seen him react when his teammates take hits before, but especially keith, like during the bom trial. then theres s4ep1 where keith sort of drifts away from team voltron in order to do more stuff with the blade of marmora and everyone’s pissed at him but then as hes walking out kuron’s like “you know we’re here for you if you need us” and keith gets that soft smile again like “i know and i cant tell you how much that means to me” and then they do that good good hand clasp that turns into a hug which by the way is a stark contrast to when other people hug keith and they just kinda grab him and he goes all stiff and it takes him a sec or three to put his arms around them if he even does that at all - with shiro they do the hand clasp first and then walk into the hug together and keith buries his face in shiro’s fuckin shoulder and smiles and closes his eyes and i wanna die. and theyve done this twice now which makes me think they probs did it before kerberos too and that also hurts me.
then theres s4ep6 where keith has gone the whole season feeling like he was a bad leader. it seems like voltron doesnt rly need him and his friends dont need him and shiro doesnt need him and hes been hanging with the bom who have their whole philosophy of not going back to rescue their own guys if it means putting the mission or the rest of the team in danger (which keith already was saying when allura was captured - how very galra of him) and now keith’s having to readjust to that mindset after being part of such a close knit team. so when he sees a way to take that shield down, he just fuckin goes for it. hes started to see himself as expendable. when shiro thinks hes about to die, we get all kinds of flashbacks, the first of which is him and keith alone outside the shack. there are no flashbacks with keith. he just closes his eyes. and shiro (kuron) congratulates him. like obv its before he knows what keith was about to do, but still, thats some fucked up shit.
now this wasnt rly part of ur question, ie u didnt ask me how i felt abt klance, but i feel like i gotta say: lance just grates on me. im sorry i know lots of people who love him but he just. isnt my cup of tea. and i do think the relationship shown in the show between keith and shiro is a lot more mature and healthy than the one shown between lance and keith. lance has some good moments! but canon lance and fanon lance seem like two entirely different people to me a lot of the time and thats all cool and fine if ur lookin for that, again im not here to stop ppl from having fun, but there are so many good sheith moments in the show and im just glad to see the relationship between two dudes depicted that way regardless of whether it becomes canon or not. also lance in the show is only shown being attracted to girls, and in kinda a skeevy way - like ive met guys who treat me like that and been Very off-put by that kind of behavior. and it would put me off if after all that they got him together with keith. like hes just superficially interested in all these hot girls but keith, who he has very few heartfelt intimate moments with onscreen, is his True Love? like thats,, not good bi rep. i Do rly like the bond hes been building with allura since they switched lions, that seems like its going in a direction that could turn out to be very wholesome and sweet. but again, if klance is ur thing, by all means have a ball.
k that was a lot but tl:dr i like 2 cry and sheith provides me with lots of opportunities to do that,, if u read it all then thank u deeply and truly for ur attention, u probs Understand me as a person a bit better than before lol
