Going to parties wasn’t typically your vibe. However your dorm roommates bribed you into going as it was the first big party since coming back from summer break. You would much rather be at home listening to your favorite bands, or painting your next masterpiece. You had taken it upon yourself to get a degree in Art and Philosophy. In hopes to become an Art teacher or a tattoo artist.

You didn’t need a degree of course to be a tattoo artist, but learning different techniques in art helped your creative mind. You had started an apprenticeship at your favorite tattoo shop. Abby had taken you under her wing to train you, she absolutely loved your portfolio. You had already been teaching yourself since your senior year of high school.

You had purchased a tattooing machine set, an insane amount of ink, needles, and of course tattooable practice skin. Abby had said within the next year you could have all of the training necessary completed before becoming an official tattoo artist for her shop. Getting the degree was a back up plan in case your tattooing career didn’t end up working out for you.

After getting ready, you had finally opted on wearing a red lace bodysuit, paired with black ripped jeans, and your Doc Martens. You grabbed your black and gray flannel as well, putting it on as the early fall was a little chilly. Being satisfied with how you looked, you and your friends left. The party thankfully wasn’t at a frat house, instead at Xavier’s house that his parents left him for the weekend.

You typically hung out with what others would typically say is “alternative people”. And there was nothing wrong with that, you liked the people you surround yourself with. It was a comfortable friend group you had come to know. However tonight there was a new face at this party, one you hadn’t seen before. Yeah you never went to parties, but you still almost knew everyone from going out bowling.

Walking past the mysterious man, you had pulled your friend Maddy to the side.

“Who is he?” You grabbed a cup making yourself a vodka soda.

She giggled softly, “That is Jake… He’s majoring in music I believe. And he’s been trying to get his band going… But other than that, there isn’t much to tell about him. All I’ve heard is that he’s good in bed.” She smirked, making herself a drink.

You weren’t really looking to have a hook up. But he drew you in, and couldn’t put a finger as to why. You nodded, taking a sip from your drink.

“However, I don’t think he’s one to settle down… Guess he likes the party life.” She shrugged.

Maddy ventured off to find her boyfriend while you stood off the side, watching Jake from a distance. He wasn’t that tall, but he was gorgeous. His hair rested just upon his shoulders, a chestnut brown. Tattoos traveling all over his arms, his shirt was a little torn by his chest revealing a chest piece to you. His hands adorned with rings, and his ears gauged, a small hoop in his nostril and an eyebrow ring.

He was your type, but you tried to steer away because most times it didn’t end well for you. But your feet were telling you otherwise and suddenly you were in front of him.

He turned to face you, smiling softly.

One look at your eyes, and I cave in…

“Sorry, Hi. I’m Y/N…” You said shyly, sticking your hand out.

He chuckled softly, shaking your hand. You could feel the calluses on his hands. A guitar player perhaps. “I’m Jake, it’s nice to meet you.”

“I’ve never seen you around before? Are you friends with Xavier?”

He raised an eyebrow to you, “Yeah, good friends actually. Although it's funny, cause I’ve never seen you around before…”

You felt your cheeks warm, “I’m not typically one to party often.”

“A shame, it's nice to see such a pretty girl…” He mumbled, but you caught on.

You blushed, shaking your head lightly, “I’m not pretty. You’re just saying that.”

“I mean it…” He looked up at you with a twinkle in his eyes. He pulled a rolled joint from his flannel front pocket. “Wanna smoke?”

You nodded, as he led the way to the backyard of the noisy house. He sat down in front of the bonfire that was lit, weirdly enough no one was out back. So it was just the two of you. He placed the joint between his lips, bringing a lighter to light the end of it. Once it was lit, he took a couple puffs before handing it over to you.

You smiled softly, saying a thank you to him as you took a couple hits. Coughing slightly, you passed it back to him. “So tell me a bit about yourself.” He spoke with a bit of raspiness to his voice.

“Well, I’m attending university to get a degree in Art and Philosophy. While also doing an apprenticeship at my favorite tattoo shop. I hope to be a tattoo artist, and my sponsor thinks if I keep doing what I’m doing I’ll land a position for myself in no time.” You smiled softly, running your hand along your thighs nervously.

Jake nodded and smiled taking in what you had told him. “That’s amazing. I’ll have to check your work out sometime.” He smiled, taking a drag from the joint.

“So what about you?” You pulled the joint from his hand. He smirked softly.

“Music major, although I’m trying to get a band going with my brothers.” He grinned, shaking his head.

“A band, that’s really cool. Do you guys play often?” You took a drag, starting to feel the effects now.

“We have some gigs lined up to play at bars. Nothing crazy.” He shrugged, taking the joint back, finishing it off.

“You should see us sometime.”

“I’d like that…” You smiled softly.

The rest of the night you and Jake completely hit it off. The two of you had a lot more in common than you thought. And Maddy wasn’t lying when she said he was a party dude. The two of you played pong most of the night and kept winning every game. Eventually the two of you ventured off walking around the streets of the local frat homes as parties were starting to die out.

“Uh, did you want me to walk you back to your dorm?” He asked nervously.

“You don’t have too. I’m sure you want to get back to yours.” You felt your cheeks flush.

“No, I want to make sure you get back safely.” He smiled at you.

“Okay, it's just a couple blocks this way.” You smiled softly as you pointed in the direction.

He made sure to stay on your side, keeping you from stumbling into the street. As the two of you were still a bit drunk from your night out.

After a bit of walking you finally reach your dorm building as he walks with you up to your dorm room. Right outside your door.

“Well this is it.” You smiled at him.

He smiled softly, “Well I’ll leave you to it. It was nice meeting you Y/N.”

“You too Jake. I had fun tonight…”

“Uh, do you want to trade numbers?” His cheeks flushed.

You nodded, handing him your phone, as he switched yours out with his. After putting in your number, he finished putting his in yours.

“I’d like to get together again.” You grinned at him.

“Yeah of course. Have to get you to come see a gig.” He chuckled.

Then he leaned in closely, your breath starting to speed up as your lips touched. His lips are soft, satin and warm. It was a sweet small kiss.

Then he pulled away, “Fuck. I’m sorry…” He chuckled nervously.

“No! It’s okay…” You blushed. “It would probably be best to leave it at that…”

He nodded, backing away slowly. “I’ll see you around love.” He said in a playful British accent.

After the small goodbye you retreated into your now empty dorm. You figured your roommates would be out for the rest of the evening and return in the late morning. So you decided to text Jake.

You: Thanks for walking me home. I appreciate it. And I’d love to see you play one night.☺️

“Yeah, cause that’s gonna solve all my fucking problems man!” You cracked your neck, standing up slowly.

“You have been late to practice every fucking time we schedule it. And the gigs you’ve been slacking off man. You fucking wanted this, and now you’re throwing it away. What is your problem?” Sam got into your face.

Her POV

Spring semester had started, you were focused on your apprenticeship. Excelling in it, just as you suspected. You had grown close with Josh, becoming quite close even with the hurt Jake had put you through. Josh had apologized for his brother's actions even though it had nothing to do with it. As Jake was his own person and could own up to his own actions.

“Just come to our show Saturday.” Josh smiled softly, paying for your guys’ coffee.

“Josh… I don’t know.” You sighed quietly.

“I swear on my life. It will be worth it. And Jake… He. He’s better.” He beamed.

You looked at him with a serious look, but there was hope in his eyes. Hope that you would go, in not just support of him but the rest of them.

“Fine. But if Jake does some fucked shit, I’m a goner.” You had a serious tone, grabbing your coffee as it was called.

“I promise, he’ll be on his best behavior.” He smiled softly. “And besides, I want you to meet this guy I’ve been seeing… His name is Ethan. And I want to know what you think of him.” He blushed talking about this new guy to you.

“Okay, well now you just have to fill me in on everything!” You giggled softly as the two of you went on your daily walk.

Saturday came, you had opted to wear jeans and a t-shirt for the gig they were playing at the local bar. You didn’t want to wear anything flashy as you were going in support of your friends' band.

When arriving at the bar, you decided to start a tab getting yourself a Tequila Soda. You opted to sit at the bar with the perfect view of the stage. Seeing Danny and Sam finishing up on setting the stage up. While noticing Josh out of the corner of your eye, you waved to him with him waving back.

In a couple of minutes the guys hit the stage, as you watched them step onto the stage. You felt your heart start to beat quickly when you noticed Jake had actually made it. You drank the rest of your drink asking the bartender for another, as the guys started out their show.

Throughout their set, you paid close attention to Jake and how he played. You haven’t been able to see them just yet so you were mesmerized by his skills. You knew Josh had a beautiful voice from the times you’ve hung out. But you didn’t know Jake was amazingly talented.

Although in the back of your head all you could picture was how he had treated you. And how fucked up he was the last time you saw him, it had you wondering if he had gotten his act together. Or if he was still the same old prick you were facing the last two times.

Once their hour long set was finished, Josh had rushed over to you embracing you into a hug. “I’m so glad you came! What did you think?” He pulled back, raising an eyebrow.

“You guys are amazing! You didn’t tell me the talent you all had!” You playfully punched his arm.

“Jake has. Something’s changed, and honestly I think it makes us sound better.” He smiled softly.

You gave a hurt smile, that you knew he wouldn’t pick up on. And order the two of you a drink. “So where is this lovely Ethan?”

“He should be coming back soon, he went to the bathroom before I came over here.” He smiled while taking his drink you got him.

“Over here!” Josh flagged him down to join you two.

“Sorry, it was crowded as fuck over there.” Ethan giggled softly, embracing you into a hug. “I’m Ethan, you must be Y/N! Josh always talks about you.”

“The one and only. Best lab partner ever! But also the bestest friend.” You smiled softly. You were happy to see Josh glow with him, yet you felt a pang as you were missing out on something like that.

For the next hour you learned a lot about Ethan and came to find that he was going to school for film. Which was one of the many reasons Josh was so interested in him. Ethan had even offered to be one of your clients for when you can start tattooing on actual clientele which would be relatively soon.

Suddenly you felt a tap on your shoulder, looking over to see it’s Jake. You took a deep breath smiling softly.

“Hey… Is it okay if we, uh. Talk?” He scratched the back of his neck.

“Sure…” You stood up from the bar stool telling Josh and Ethan you would be back.

You felt your nerves practically shaking. You were scared, excited, and had all these emotions going at the same time. The two of you decided to step by the one area that wasn’t as crowded in the building.

“So um.” He started nervously.

“Before we continue I just want to make sure… You’re sober right?” You felt bad for asking, but wanted to make sure this wasn’t going to be another bad evening.

“I’ve cut out the hard drugs… I’m just smoking and drinking now. But I’ve barely had anything tonight.” He looked at you with honesty in his eyes.

How did you start doing jobs for kingsisle?? I'm trying to break into the industry as an artist, and I have no clue how to approach potential employers, even just for commissions 😭😭

Hey! So I actually work full time with KingsIsle as a character animator- my job year round is to make pets, mounts, mobs, npc's move :D

How I got started here is kind of a wild story. I had been wanting to reach out to KI about possibly interning with them post-graduation- I had a few people I semi knew at the company, and knew I'd have a good portfolio piece to show them from my senior thesis project. However, three days before graduation, a friend from KI msg'ed me that KI was doing summer internships, and asked if I was interested. I spent the next 3 days building my portfolio website/resume & sent it to my friend. A month and two interviews later, they accepted me! Once my internship was drawing to and end, they were able to offer me a full time position.

My #1 piece of advice for folks trying to break into the industry: MAKE CONNECTIONS. NETWORK. Obviously having dedication and building your artistic skills (whether that's character design, animation, story boarding, etc) is a huge part of it- like you can make as many connections as you want, but if you don't have a decent set of skills/a portfolio to back you up, then you might be out of luck there. But I cannot understate the importance of networking.

So, how do you make connections/network? My advice:

-I know everyone can't afford it, but going to an art school/college is a decent way to make connections- not just with teacher's who have worked in the industry themselves, but also with your future artists. Heck, I've been seeing younger artists like myself start their own studios. You can defo still make connections w/o college, but I just wanted to note that.

-Interact with artists/folks in the industry online. comment on their posts, ask them genuine questions. Most folks are happy to answer questions or give portfolio advice.

-Mentorships are a great thing- also something i see offered on twitter a lot. Some studio's like dreamworks have "internship" like programs where people who have recently graduation or are looking for a career change can apply to and learn from. I'd follow companies you're interested in via linkedin, or visit their websites to see if they offer things like this

-Also!! Participate in anijams, gamejams, art swaps, zines- these are all great ways to connect with fellow artists online. My college has an animation club that does anijams twice a year- which is a GREAT thing to put on your resume- it shows collaboration, dedication- things you need to be open to when working in the industry.

-I'd also say that trying to narrow down what you're really passionate about doing (for me, 3d animation just fit my heart the best) and learn more about it. Watch youtube videos, follow tutorials. Practice your anatomy, do gesture drawings from life, draw as many hands and feet as you can, lol. All things to help strengthen your skills! Consistency is key!!

I know that's a lot of info, so I just want to reiterate something: I've been at KI for about a year and a half now, and I am still just as passionate about this game as I was beforehand. That passion is one of my greatest assets. WANTING to do what I do for work makes working a lot easier, and produces a better product. If you have a passion, a drive to do something, you can do the damn thing. Making connections/being consistent as an artists can feel wildly overwhelming. But it doesn't have to be. You're worthy of sharing your art and ideas with the world, and people want to hear them. Baby steps! Start small. Heck talking to me already gets your started with networking :D

Here's my @fandomtrumpshate gift for @mcbangle, who wanted a piece with Camila and Hunter at a convention! As I mentioned, I'm not sure the wip messy background adds or distracts more, so I included both haha. Thank you so much for your patience and flexibility with me during this process. You ideas were all SO cute, and I hope you enjoy the final result! It's been a pleasure working with you, and happy holidays!!

CSP Active Time: 9 h 1 m

Overall, I think I'm happy with the results! I got really excited about possibly turning this into a full-background, fully-rendered art piece, but time ended up getting in the way. That said, I still like my sketch a lot and think it could be a really strong zine portfolio piece if I were to complete it. Ideally, I'd be including booths for Cosmic Frontier, Azura, and generic stuffed animals (where Camila got the husky after noticing Hunter eyeing it) along with Luz and Amity in their cosplays and perhaps the rest of the Hexsquad in the crowd. So many details would be involved, so it would be a HUGE project, but it still feels like it has lots of potential if I could pull it off! Definitely on my hope-list, but without active zine apps coming up, it's probably a fairly low priority. The background colors are also not feeling right, so might help if I return to this project after learning about color theory a bit more.

The Neon Devil had its booth set up and was ready for curious convention-goers by the time that Dev’s stomach began to gurgle. It didn’t growl out of hunger because they had managed to squeeze in a quick breakfast before their team had packed up everything they needed for this summer’s tattoo festival. This only meant that their stomach was grumbling out of discomfort.

The festival was in one of Toronto’s biggest convention centres. Many revellers walked around the area, letting their tattoos cover their skin rather than wear clothes. There were many people in thongs and nipple tape. Every inch of every body was covered in ink, leaving Dev to wonder who would be getting in the chairs.

Somehow, the Neon Devil’s two spots were currently occupied by customers. Monty was working on a sugar skull tattoo, while another artist named Phoebe was tattooing a beehive for a very chatty girl.

Dev was glad that there were only two chairs for clients set up at their booth; they didn’t think their hands were steady enough to work just then. The hum of the vibrating machines filled their head with static. The heat in the crowded building was making them uncomfortable as they shifted on the plastic chair set up behind the table.

Jory sat next to Dev, talking with people who passed by their booth. He seemed hyper. It was his first convention and the excitement showed on his face. He was making connections and securing potential clients. He had every right to be happy.

Dev only wished they felt half as good.

As much as Dev wanted someone to ask about their work, they did not feel like working. Their hurried breakfast of cold leftover pizza from the night before had congealed in their belly. They put their hand over their abdomen, thankful that the table blocked this movement. Dev cursed in their mind. This was the worse time to get sick, but the nausea was unignorable.

“I’m gonna find the washrooms,” Dev, said, rising unsteadily from their spot. It looked like Monty was finishing up and Dev didn’t want to be around when that chair was empty.

“Hurry back,” Jory said. “A lot of people have been drooling over your portfolio.”

“Sure thing,” Dev replied with no intentions of hurrying back.

They wandered around, looking for the washrooms, occasionally getting hit with a blast of air conditioning. Dev couldn’t decide if they preferred that sudden chill to the dizzying heat from before. They walked in a daze without paying much attention to the other booths. If their stomach hadn’t been in a knot, Dev probably would have stopped at every other table and would have returned with a new piece to fill the patch of bare skin on their calf muscle.

Eventually they found the washrooms. A wave of dread washed over them upon seeing the lines to both the men’s and women’s washrooms.

Their stomach let out a whine, making Dev bend over with their arms wrapped around their torso. They were trying to force themselves to accept the miserable fact they might end up puking in a crowded washroom, when they realized that they could leave the convention centre. Just walk outside.

Rather than stand in the line any longer, Dev left the building, looking for a grassy aera with few people. The crowds were definitely thinner on the outside since there were no live tattooing stations out here. It wasn’t hard to find a secluded area under a tree.

Dev braced themselves with one hand on the tree and the other on their roiling stomach. A sour belch erupted from their mouth, making them grimace and spit out a glob of saliva. The burp had been deep and wet. Dev groaned. There was no chance they’d make it through this day without vomiting.

Another burp rumbled up their chest, filling their mouth with a rancid taste. Dev lurched forward with a gag. Thick saliva filled their mouth just before a wave of partially digested morning pizza rushed up from their belly.

They retched a second time, bringing up more of their stomach’s contents. It splattered on the grass in a stream of pale brown.

Dev exhaled deeply. They wiped their wrist across their forehead, feeling the sweat cling to their skin. They coughed and cleared their throat. The sick tickled the back of their mouth which made their nose run. They sniffled and coughed again, trying to regain their composure.

“Fuck,” Dev sighed, spitting onto the pile of sick that they made.

Vomiting had provided some relief, but they could feel their body gearing up for another round. This was ridiculous. They weren’t going to be any help to their coworkers like this. Every step they took to get back to the booth felt like the challenge of their life.

Finally, Dev got back to their station. Its bright red sign was hard to miss. When Dev stumbled back, Monty was talking off his gloves and shaking hands with another client. This wasn’t the person who got the sugar skull, meaning Dev had been gone long enough for him to do another session. Phoebe was sitting at the table alone; Jory was nowhere to be found.

“Where’s Jory?” Dev asked, wincing at the hoarseness to their voice. They cleared their throat again, still able to taste the vomit. They almost dove for the cooler that held the water bottles.

“He went looking for you,” Monty said. His expression changed as he made eye contact with Dev. His eyebrows rose in surprise. “Dude, you look like shit.”

Dev sniffled. “I feel like shit. I just puked.”

“Oh fuck,” Monty said. Phoebe turned around as well and mumbled something similar.

While their coworkers gawked, Dev took a swig of water. “Ugh, I need to leave. Will you guys be okay to run the booth?”

“Yeah, totally,” Phoebe said, momentarily ignoring the people who passed by the table “...Except you drove here, remember? Your truck is the only car big enough for all the supplies.”

Dev groaned. They forgot about that. There was a lot of shit to bring back to the studio at the end of the day. Dev crumpled into a chair and ran their hands through their hair. Nothing was going right, and it made them want to scream. But they didn’t scream because vomiting had hurt their throat. God, everything hurt. Their throat, their head, their goddamn stomach that had been gurgling for this entire conversation.

Dev slumped forward in the chair, burying their face in their hands. “My stomach is aching so bad right now. This is torture.” A deep hiccupped made their shoulders jerk. Their hair fell like a veil in front of their face.

Monty was looking at Dev with pity. “Listen, you give me your car keys and have Jory drive you back. Phoebe and I will stay.”

Dev sniffled and lifted their head up. That was a good idea. Jory had driven here in his own car. “Will you be okay just you two?”

“We’ll make do,” Phoebe insisted. “Besides, you can’t stay here. You look like hell.”

“Maybe it’ll be good branding.”

Monty chuckled. “Yeah, and the client that you puke on will leave a great review.”

The two of them insisted that they’d be fine for the rest of the day, practically pushing Dev away.

“Jory was getting worried that you were gone so long. He’ll definitely be okay with taking you home,” Monty said.

Phoebe smiled. “It was kinda cute how concerned he was.”

Dev shook their head, trying to hide a small grin. “Yeah, it’s maddening how nice he can be.”

It took a while, what with the crowds, but eventually Dev spotted Jory wandering the aisles. He was walking towards their booth as if he had given up looking for them. When their eyes met, Jory let out a visible sigh.

“Wow that was the hardest game of ‘where’s waldo’ ever,” he said as they came up next to each other. “You were gone so long I thought another business had stolen you. I was getting worried.” As Jory spoke, his goofy smile sunk into a frown. Dev was sure that they still looked like shit.

“You didn’t have to worry,” they said, even though Jory was right to have worried.

He touched Dev’s arm. “Apparently, I did. You don’t look so hot.”

“I’ve been getting that a lot.”

“What’s going on…” Jory trailed off. This was the moment when he would have said ‘babes’ to literally anyone else but it felt weird to say it to Dev.

“I threw up.” At seeing Jory’s shocked expression, they continued with, “I must have caught a bug or something. My stomach is a fucking mess.”

“Aw, Dev. I’m sorry.”

“Yeah…Can you take me home?”

“Uh of course,” Jory said, already searching for his car keys in his pockets. “But what about your truck?”

“Monty and Phoebe said they’d handle it all, and honestly, I don’t care at this point.”

The two of them got back to their booth, made it clear that they were leaving, and started to walk towards the parking lot. Jory wasn’t used to walking next to a sick Dev. It was slower than their usual pace. He fell back, keeping the rhythm that Dev set.

He could see that every step made them wince. “Want me to carry your bag?”

Dev grunted and hoisted their bag higher on their shoulder. “I’m good. Where’d you park?”

“It’s still a ways away. Finding a spot was a real bellyache…I guess pun intended.”

Dev groaned but pushed on. They could feel sweat dripping into their eyes. Time was running out until the next round started. The same gurgling from before came back stronger. All Dev wanted was to sit down and cut off their legs so they never had to walk again. Each step jostled their stomach.

Dev still couldn’t see Jory’s car. They moaned and stopped walking suddenly when their belly did a nauseating flip.

“Hold up,” they mumbled before leaning forward with their hands on their knees. They breathed deeply, feeling a burp roll its way up their throat. The belch burst from their mouth with a long, wet sound. The next burp brought with it a wave of acid that splashed the back of their mouth.

“That doesn’t sound great,” Jory said, walking back to where Dev had stopped.

“Thanks for the feedback,” Dev said with saliva filling their mouth. The rising nausea in their stomach kept them frozen in this position.

The two of them stood in the middle of the parking lot. Jory kept an eye out for any approaching cars, but so far all was good. “Take your time. We’re not in anyone’s way.” As he said this, he realized that was more of a ‘Jory’ thing to be worried about.

Dev coughed and spat until a retch clawed its way up from their stomach. It was empty at first, but the second retch was productive. With a sick gurgle in their throat, vomit splattered onto the pavement at their feet. They could feel their backpack slipping off their shoulder as their body wanted to lean further.

“Give me this,” Jory said, already taking the bag from Dev. He bit his lip, wishing he could do more to make this easier for them. Although Dev didn’t seem to be having any problems with vomiting. The sick just kept coming. Jory had to remind them to breathe. “Easy, Dev, take a breath when you can.”

Dev let out a wobbly exhale. “I’m not done.”

“I’m not stopping you,” he said. “Better here than in the car.”

With another chesty burp, Dev brought up the rest of their insides. There was a formidable puddle at their feet. Their stomach was beginning to ache with the workout it had been put through. There was only bile left to send up. That bitter yellow sludge joined the puddle.

At the end of it, Dev was sweaty, shaky, and weak. They stumbled away from the puddle of vomit and sat on the curb. They didn’t say anything, but they groaned loudly while hugging their aching belly.

“Dev, why don’t you stay here,” Jory said. “I’ll bring the car to you.”

“Great idea,” they mumbled, “wish we thought of that sooner.”

A Tory minister who voted to curtail access to abortion has been granted ministerial responsibility for abortion care in the UK, in a move that has provoked fury among service providers.

Maria Caulfield, recently appointed women’s minister by the new prime minister Rishi Sunak, is a former officer of the all-party parliamentary pro-life group, and voted against legalising abortion in Northern Ireland.

Abortion was banned in almost all circumstances, even in pregnancies resulting from rape and incest, with women who sought terminations facing life imprisonment until the procedure was legalised in Northern Ireland in October 2019.

Clare Murphy, chief executive of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS), a leading abortion provider in the UK, said it is “quite simply appalling that Maria Caulfield, a self-declared ‘voice of the unborn’”, had been “given the government portfolio for abortion care”.

Ms Murphy added: “This is an absolute slap in the face to the women of this country, and suggests a complete disregard for their needs. In the aftermath of Roe v Wade, the UK has an opportunity to really show the world what progress and the protection of women’s rights looks like – this appointment would signal just the opposite.”

Roe v Wade – the landmark decision that legalised abortion in the US in 1973 – was overturned by the country’s Supreme Court in June this year, with millions of women losing their legal right to have a termination.

Ms Murphy said: “This is an MP who has described those who support women needing to end pregnancies as the ‘abortion industry’, which she has accused of being ‘unethical, unsafe and unprofessional’.

“Unlike any other area of healthcare, decisions regarding the licensing of abortion clinics sit with the relevant government minister. Maria Caulfield potentially now has the ability to block the establishment of new abortion services, and close existing clinics.”

She noted that Ms Caulfield had voted to “recriminalise at-home early medical abortions, and voted against measures to protect women from anti-abortion clinic harassment” in the past year.

“These two important pieces of legislation were passed by an overwhelming majority by her fellow MPs. Maria Caulfield does not speak for the House, does not speak for women, and is in no way an appropriate minister to oversee this vital aspect of women’s healthcare,” Ms Murphy added.

“We urge the prime minister to revoke this appointment and ensure that Maria Caulfield is not given this portfolio and is not handed the chance to jeopardise women’s access to safe, legal, NHS-funded abortion care.”

A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Care told The Independent that abortion typically used to sit within the public health brief.

Ms Caulfield, the Conservative MP for Lewes, has previously suggested curbing the 24-week abortion time limit. She has also been criticised for claiming that babies born at a mere 18 weeks “grow up to live long, healthy lives like the rest of us” – an assertion that was rejected as “simply untrue”.

Earlier this week, she claimed that protesters who harass women outside abortion clinics may be attempting to “comfort” them. Ms Caulfield made the comments while standing up for her decision to vote against “buffer zones” outside abortion clinics.

However, Ms Caulfield also said she would “uphold” her fellow MPs’ vote in support of buffer zones. Earlier in the month, MPs voted in favour of these zones being implemented outside abortion clinics in England and Wales, in a major win for abortion providers.

A “buffer zone” stops anti-abortion protesters, or other demonstrators, from standing in the close vicinity of clinics or hospitals that provide abortion services. Ms Murphy previously said the BPAS was “delighted” that politicians had voted to “protect women, protect healthcare staff, and establish buffer zones”.

“Every year, around 100,000 women are treated [in relation to abortion services] by a clinic or hospital that is targeted by anti-abortion protests,” she said.

“These groups attempt to deter or prevent women from accessing abortion care by displaying graphic images of foetuses, calling women ‘murderers’, and hanging baby clothing around clinic entrances, causing women significant distress.”

Other tactics employed by anti-abortion protesters include chasing women down the street and sharing pamphlets containing wholly false medical information. This sometimes even involves disseminating material that features incorrect claims that abortions cause breast cancer.

I just finished reading The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern and wanted to ramble off some things i liked and stuff. spoilers ahead, yeah

I don't usually *intend* to read most books, merely stumble into them, and this book was no exception. Eerie, that I found a protagonist (Zachary) that mirrored me so exactingly: numbingly passive, a bookish hermit gamer, totally into silver-fox-likes. Double eerie, that Zachary stumbles into a book that mirrors him so well as well. Inception.

(In fact, that darkness portion in the book before Zachary meets Simon? Where Zachary almost sciccumbs to a retelling of his deepest insecurities? Hit just a bit too close to home. Get out of my head, Morgenstern)

Anyways, that's enough about me. As for the story itself, I adored its book-about-a-book themes. The interwoven stories that all came together like a patient thread pulled taut? The idea that everyone has a story they carry around near their heart? It's inspiring to see such an ode to the art of storytelling. And an ode to the natural world as well: animals in the story aren't just set pieces, but heralds of change (owls) and also just downright adorable (The Kitchen).

I feel that Dorian's and Zachary's romance had more potential for impact, in my opinion. Between Zachary doing fetch quests for most of the story's first third and Dorian either being drunk or poisoned for the story's second third, I feel like they could have more time to interact organically (although to be fair, I would also immediately fall in love with a smokey-voiced mystery man). I also think that the resurrection scene at the end could have more heartfelt moments in it. But I also get that it's best for the integrity of the story overall if they kept their romance to side-story engagement levels, because that's what it is: another story among many in the waters of the Starless Sea.

That being said, I'm also the kind of guy that enjoys the B-plots more in stories anyways. Kitchen, I love you and would read a whole nother novel about those silly little bees. Innkeeper. I would kill for an anthology of your chance tavern encounters. Simon and Eleanor's story being based around time-warp shenanigans was interestingly executed. et cetera et cetera

Overall, for this being my first Morgenstern book, it was a perfect first encounter. It renewed my appreciation for literature and I am always happy to be surprised by a gay romance, however contrived (affectionate). Maybe fantasy is a bit above my pay grade, or at least the way Morgenstern writes fiction, so I think I'll try to diversity my reading portfolio a bit more before diving back into her other work.
