Billy Hargrove x Reader
words count: 766
summary: You and Billy are dating, but you have doubts as to why he was interested in you.
warnings: fluff, fluff and fluff
a/n: Hii everyone, I bring you another one shot of Billy. I must say I'm not a fan, in fact I don't think I like what I wrote, but I upload it anyway because I like to be embarrassed. If you see any grammatical errors, don't be afraid to tell me, it helps me with my English. With that I say byeee.
The wind blowing in through the open window of the Camaro hits you in the face, and in the background you hear a rock song from a band that your boyfriend listens to. You don’t talk to each other, but that doesn’t make the atmosphere uncomfortable, in fact, the silences between you usually feel comfortable.
“Babe, there’s a party tonight at Tina’s house, I’m going with the guys, do you want me to pick you up and we can go together?”
Dating Billy, one of the most popular boys, brings that on. There’s always a party at night at one of the popular guys’ house. Ever since he came to Hawkins he became a high school sensation, all the boys wanted his friendship and all the girls wanted to have him in their beds, that part you always tried to ignore for their sake.
You still didn’t know how you had gotten someone like Billy interested in someone like you, a girl who tried to go as unnoticed as possible. You were not interested in being popular, the only thing you wanted was to have good grades so you could go to a good college with a full scholarship, that way you would not generate more expenses to your parents than they already had.
That’s why you never expected the bad boy to look for you all over school looking for a date because he was curious about you, at first you thought it was some kind of joke that was going to leave you in a bad light, with that in mind you decided to deny him that date causing Billy to look for every possible way to get your attention so he could get a date with you. To the surprise of many, he succeeded and took you on a date where he impressed you with how gentlemanly he was and made you rethink your opinion of him.
After several dates, he proposed if you wanted to be his girlfriend in his blue Camaro under a starry night getting you to say yes to his question.
“Love, are you there?” Billy’s voice pulls you out of your thoughts and brings you back to reality, where he asked you if you wanted to go to a party.
“Sorry, I was lost in my mind” You say to then answer the question he asked you at first. “I really don’t know Billy, next week I have a math test and you know I’m not very good at it.”
“I know, but this time you have to go to see me dethrone Harrigton from his throne.”
“Billy, you know how I feel about those things, they’re bullshit. Besides, I’ve already seen you dethrone Steve and the truth is that dragging you back to your car is not in my plans” With that the conversation ended because he had already parked at your house. You give him a kiss on the cheek and get out of the car, from his side there is no answer to your statement.
Tumblr media
It is night time and you are in your room studying for your exam, you are listening to the music of David Bowie, one of your favorite artists. While you are about to turn pages in your study book you hear something knocking on your window, at first you think it’s some bird that crashed into your window, but after listening to it three more times you decide to see what it really was.
When you open the window you can’t believe what greets you, it’s Billy with his big smile, in his hand you could see some stones, with them he was trying to get your attention. You instantly went downstairs to open the back door of the kitchen, he comes in with a flirtatious smile that always left your legs shaking.
“What are you doing here? I thought you were going to Tina’s party to dethrone Steve” In your voice can be heard the surprise of finding him there at that moment.
“I planned to go, but with you. So here I am to have a fun night of study with my girl” He grabs your waist and brings his mouth to yours planting a kiss that causes the butterflies in your stomach to awaken.
At that moment you understood why Billy was interested in you, maybe others don’t understand it and it’s because they don’t feel it. When you kiss him the world around you disappears and you feel that Billy completes what you are missing. You assume he feels the same, so you keep kissing him.

The Fallen King and the King of the Freaks | Part 3

Steve wasn't planning on actually becoming friends with Hellfire. Not after the obvious way he made them uncomfortable. So, after Eddie helped him, he said to himself that he was done... then Billy picked on him again, and Eddie came to the rescue again. Honestly, it was like Eddie became his white knight.
And Steve... Steve could take care of himself. However, he couldn't stop himself from wanting to be their friend. He hated the way he jumped at the chance to just go to watch them playing a game like he couldn't even stop himself.
Steve didn’t understand why he offered to go watch them after swimming. No, that was a lie. He knew exactly why he did it.  He wanted to go. He loved listening to stories. He loved hearing people talk about something they were passionate about. So, it sounded nice. But when lunch was over and he tosses his untouched meal, he regretted it. They were just pitying him and he didn’t need to force his shit on anyone else.
So, he decided he’d just ignore them until they forgot about him completely. It was the day after Hellfire, so he’d have an entire week to become a background thought. It shouldn’t be too difficult… most people only knew Steve’s top layer. People left him behind all the time, Hellfire wouldn’t be any different. After all, everyone who had learned who he was, left him. His parents were gone more than they were around. Nancy called him bullshit after he let her in. Tommy and Carol, his best friends from elementary school, had used him to become more “powerful” and “cool”. Hellfire would be the same way; he knew they would.
Except, they didn’t just let him disappear. Grant would wave at him in the hallways with a kind smile. Gareth had the same free hour and suddenly Steve didn’t sit in the library alone. Eddie would constantly find him during lunch and offer a seat which Steve had turned down with a polite smile. Always saying he needed to work on school shit. (Which was never a lie. His head swam, trying to keep up in class after Billy bashed his head in.) However, the first real interaction with Hellfire was with Jeff.
It was Saturday and Steve stood in the supermarket. The kids were coming over later in the day and Steve got a call from Lucas’s mom asking him to not buy her son junk food. And well, Steve knew how to cook. However, his house was completely void of any food. He hadn't felt the need to cook if it was just himself lately… After that night Steve’s stomach rebelled against most foods.
He was staring blankly at the meat section for, what could’ve been, a long time when a hand dropped on his shoulder. Steve flinched away and his body went into fight mode before he noticed Jeff. He dropped his hands and gave the other an extremely fake grin. “Hey man,” he smiled and Jeff looked him over as if he could see right through Steve.
“I thought it was you. Your hair is very distinguishable.” He joked and Steve let out a small chuckle.
“Well I’m called The Hair for a reason,” his voice didn’t hold much joy in it and he winced.
“So, what brings you here?” He asks lamely.
Jeff shrugs, “gotta pick up stuff for my mom. Same for you?”
Steve huffed a laugh, “nah, she’s not in town. But I’ve got a few of the kids coming over and need to make them something that their parents would approve of.” He over-explained but Jeff just nodded.
“Struggling with a plan?” He asked like he wanted to talk with Steve. “Not a big cook?” He asked when Steve didn’t respond.
It makes him smile, “oh I know how to cook. When your al-” he stops himself with clearing his throat. “Nah, just not really feeling meat at the moment.” He gestures and when his gaze hits the bloody meat he shudders.
“There are lots of meatless options out there.” Jeff offers and Steve freezes, he hadn't even considered that. After all, he was told every meal needed a good amount of protein. “My sister doesn’t eat meat. So we’ve learned how to work around it. It’s a little different but still,” he shrugs and Steve’s brow furrowed. “It’s a little hard to get the hang of right away but with practice, you should be able to get it down.”
That makes Steve frown, “I don’t really have the time to experiment.” He swallows and looks back to the meat selection.
Jeff nudged him with his shoulder, “If you want I could help. I’m not that busy today.”
Steve felt something swell in his chest. “Really? I don’t want to be a-”
Jeff scoffed, “please I’d love to help. Showing off to King Steve. It sounds like fun. Plus, then I have an excuse to leave the house.” Steve nods and Jeff gestures him to follow. Jeff puts things in Steve’s basket with an explanation to what he’s planning and Steve just nods. He also helps Jeff get the stuff for his mom before heading to his house.
He only has a few moments alone in which he grabs out his stereo and sets it on some rock station he figured would be more Jeff’s speed. Then he cleans the dust off his counters and waits for the other. It doesn’t take too long and Jeff takes off his shoes politely before he follows Steve into the empty shell of a house. “Okay, are you ready?” Jeff questions and Steve nods. They work together, Jeff giving him instructions. However, they also talked about music, Steve mostly just listened as Jeff explains some songs that he likes. It’s nice. It’s like having a friend and it makes Steve’s hands shake. He didn’t want to let them in. And yet he let Jeff into his house.
They end up making Vegetarian Enchiladas. It’s filled with corn, beans, and zucchini. Topped with cheese, avocado, tomato, and parsley. However, Jeff makes them look normal and Steve hopes the kids won’t notice. “I’ve got two younger siblings. My sister doesn’t do meat and my brother refuses vegetables. I’ve gotten really good at making a vegetarian meal that he will eat. Don’t worry the kids will just think you made them normal enchiladas.” Jeff says and Steve leans against his counter, so fucking thankful.
“So, you cook normally?” Jeff questions as Steve grabs them both out a soda he got for the kids.
He nods, “yeah. My mom’s not one to cook” at least not for me. “So, I’ve learned.” He does look at Jeff and his shoulders slump. “Thanks for the help, man. It was really appreciated. Honestly, it’s a big help. I have to repay you, or something.” He states and Jeff looks confused.
“No need, it’s not a big deal.” He stated but people weren’t nice without wanting something in return. Not many people were kind as they grew up.
Jeff seemed to see Steve’s confusion and sighed. “You know what, how about you bring cookies or something to Hellfire’s next meeting. You’re still stopping by after swimming, right?”
It was a chance to get away from going. Steve could just say, no man something came up. But instead, he grinned, “yeah of course. Any allergies?”
“Grant’s allergic to tree nuts,” Jeff offers, and Steve’s phone rings. “But I’ll get out of your hair, just remember they cook for 12 minutes at 400.” He reminded and headed out. Steve went to the phone as the door to his house shut. Why couldn’t he let go of the Hellfire club?

part 2 of this like a year later
The three of them settle into a booth, Steve sitting across from his boyfriend and watching with a small smirk at how the two siblings fight — Max demanding elbow room by shoving her elbows across the width of the table while Billy shoves at her to move over, the two of them glaring at each other.
Steve doesn’t understand it; the dynamics of siblinghood are foreign, almost alien, to him but he still takes enjoyment in having a front-row seat.
Once their food arrives, Steve sits quietly and eats, chewing on a couple fries as he watches Billy watch Max — his boyfriend’s blue eyes focused on the girl’s burger and fries.
“You’re not gonna eat all of that,” Billy mutters as he takes a sip of his Coke, quirking a brow when Max turns her pinched face to him.
“Yes, I am!” She argues, stuffing a few more fries into her mouth, as if to prove it.
It’s kind of funny, the way Billy lays claim to Max’s food and how that claim makes Max burn with anger and spite.
Maybe dumbly, he asks, “Why don’t you two share?”
They pause mid-chew and stare at Steve like he’s grown a second head before looking at each other and laughing.
“Fuck sharing,” Billy hums as he picks up his burger, “I know the shitbird isn’t gonna finish her food — she never does.”
“Well, I’m gonna now, since you said I won’t,” Max argues again with a little drawl, also picking up her burger, copying her brother as they each take a bite.
Steve can’t help but wonder, “Is there anything you two share?”
“A house,” the siblings answer in unison.
Figures.
“Listen, princess, you’re an only child — just like we were, before we were forced to live together. You try getting a sibling after all this time and tell me just how much you like to share.”
Steve blinks and says, “I’ve always wanted a sibling, though.”
“Then you can have her,” Billy smirks and motions to Max with a tilt of his head.
The redhead frowns at them both, “What makes either of you think I want a brother?”
“You’re telling me you’d rather have a sister?” Billy asks her with a hint of disbelief, quirking a brow, “A sister wouldn’t beat Jacob in ninth grade’s ass for you, now would she?”
“Maybe she would,” Max pouts as she pulls the tomato out of her burger and drops it onto the paper lining her basket, “You don’t know.”
“I know enough,” Billy argues, looking at Steve across the table as he takes another sip.
Steve gives him a smile before furrowing his brows a little, asking quietly, “Did you really beat up that little kid?”
Billy winks at him as he sets his cup down, saying nothing, so Steve rolls his eyes. Of course.
“Here,” Max huffs in defeat a few minutes later, sliding her unfinished food over to a still-hungry Billy, who smiles in triumph.
“Knew it,” Billy chuckles as Max punches his arm and crosses her arms over her chest in annoyance.
Later, when he’s cuddling his boyfriend in his bed, Billy admits with a murmur that he didn’t actually beat up that Jacob kid, he only threatened him. Told him to stay away from his sister.
Because no one bothers Max except him.
And in that moment, Steve understands siblinghood a little bit better.

Moonwood: Part 5
Thank you all so much for your patience. We're baaaaack with an update.
|Part One Here|
It’s pretty stupid in Steve’s opinion that he still needs to get his mom to sign a permission slip to go to basketball camp, even though he’s eighteen.
“I don’t want to hear it Harrington.” The coach says when Steve tracks him down. “I can’t let you on the bus without a permission slip.”
Hank says it’s because the school doesn’t want to be liable if something happens to them out in the woods – and Steve can’t help but shiver a little at the way he says it. Like he expects something or knows something Steve doesn’t. But he tells himself he’s being crazy. Anything could happen in a national park but that doesn’t mean something is going to. There’s gotta be like safe areas mapped out for the public, right? It’s probably a good thing the slip reads like a contract: I understand the risk my child is taking and waive my rights to be pissed about it if they get chewed on by a grizzly bear. It shows they’ve thought things through. At least Steve hopes they’ve thought it through – if he’s honest, he’s not sure how he feels about spending a week in the woods with a bunch of keyed up guys all jonesing to impress Billy Hargrove.
Because it’s pretty obvious after the first round that the team captains have a lot of pull with the coach.
“Hey sweetheart!” Steve’s mom is in the living room, working on some crochet toy for a neighbor who is having a baby. Steve had no idea she could crochet until she started making the toy. Apparently, she was pretty crafty before she met his dad. Steve’s dad didn’t think it was a sexy enough hobby or something. Said it was for old women and spinsters.
“How was tryouts?” Aunt Julie asks when he walks in. She’s knitting what looks like a hooded onesie with ears and a fluffy tail attached. It’s pretty damn cute.
“Wasn’t much of a tryout. The coach wasn’t even there, and the captains just ran us ragged the whole time.” He grumbles, shrugging his duffle off his shoulder and throwing himself down onto the couch beside his mom. She she laughs as the cushions sag beneath his weight.
“Coach Brown is a godsend to that school. He knows how to pick the right personalities, people who really work well together and form a solid bond.” Aunt Julie sighs wistfully. “It was much different when your mom and I were in school. There was a lot of tension between us and the Schiller folks. I felt like I was always on my guard, looking over my shoulder.”
“What’s up with that, by the way?” Steve asks, eager to finally have an explanation for the weird vibes everyone seems to have about Moonwood. “Why are people like, scared of this place? It can’t just be because of the forest.”
Steve’s mom and his aunt share a strange look.
“They’re scared of us. Because we’re different.” Aunt Julie says, but before Steve can ask her what she means his mom is shaking her head and hissing something at Julie in Lythan. They go back and forth like that for a moment and Steve just knows that they’re talking about him, and he’s sick of being left in the dark.
“Whoa whoa whoa, guys!” He snaps. “In english please! I’m right here and I want to know what’s going on. Mom?”
Steve’s mom looks tortured, like Steve is holding a lighter to her feet. His aunt heaves a heavy sigh and flips her long dark hair over her shoulder.
“It’s time to tell him Jess. The bonfire is tomorrow night.”
Steve wants to know what’s going on and why everyone keeps talking about the bonfire as if it’s so important, when it’s just a bunch of people from the neighborhood getting together to tell ghost stories and get plastered. He doesn’t know what he’s expecting his mom to say but it’s not that she’s a werewolf.
He thinks she’s pulling his leg at first, cause what else can she be doing but then aunt Julie chimes in and they both just won’t stop. They tell him that the people in their village have always turned into wolves and that they came to the new world to escape persecution. He’s kind of mad at himself, how long he listens until they get to the part with the witch.
“Time out! Time out! You expect me to believe you guys, grandma and grandpa and all the rest, you’re werewolves, and everybody knows about it because you fought a witch?” Steve laughs even though it’s not really funny and waits for them – but nobody laughs with him.
“Yes. She’d put a curse on the village and the people there to force them to pay tithes and make sacrifices to her.” His mom says and his aunt nods, continuing.
“When the townspeople rose against her, her coven came to exact their vengeance. The pack protected them, and in exchange we were given this land. Although the area has grown and many new people have come, there are people dedicated to keeping the old truce alive.”
“That’s why you needed to know before the bonfire. There will be representatives from the other towns there, new and old. There will be a demonstration and the pact between our communities will be renewed.” His mom finishes.
Steve gets up and stomps off. He is mad. He is so mad that she would play such a weird stupid prank on him instead of just being honest; but mostly he’s afraid. He’s afraid because it doesn’t make sense and he can’t figure out why she would do it or why aunt Julie would help her and when his grandpa knocks on the door of his room later and asks to come in, his heart sinks into his stomach.
He knows what his grandfather wants to talk about as he sits down on the edge of his bed before he even says a word – and it just doesn’t make sense. It can’t be real. It just can’t be. There’s no such thing as werewolves, and the only witches he knows are edgy girls who like to collect crystals.
“Your mom says you had quite the talk earlier.” His grandpa starts with a small sigh. “How ya doing Pip?”
“You mean with the discovery that my family is either insane or they’re werewolves?” Steve sneers, not looking away from where his gaze is fixed on the ceiling. “I’m still wrestling with it.”
“Well, go easy on your mom while you wrestle. She’s had a rough couple of months. It ain’t easy breaking with a soulmate.”
“Soulmate? I thought you hated my dad.”
“Don’t matter what I think of him” grandpa grunts. “Wolves mate for life. We’re born for someone, and common thought was they were born for us. But well your mom… she loved that man with all she had, but there wasn’t much in him for loving.”
And that’s how Steve discovered that it’s real – the stories his mom used to tell him about soulmates, and how one day he’d grow up and he’d meet someone, and when he’d look at them, he’d just know he was made to love them.
“This is crazy. I don’t – I don’t want…” Steve bites back tears, unable to get the words out. He doesn’t think his grandpa is a liar, and the whole family can’t be crazy. But he doesn’t want this to be real. Not if it means he might be made to love someone who will never love him back. His dad didn’t get it, why Steve would choose to be broke and struggle with his mom instead of have his future pathed for him and live in comfort with his dad.
The thought that it might be his destiny to live like that, with his hand out always waiting on love that won’t come… Steve cries and his grandfather pats his shoulder awkwardly, but lovingly.
“I’m awful glad to have you Stevie and I wouldn’t change a thing, but I’ve always hoped maybe she was wrong. You don’t know a soul bond until you feel it and it’s easy for a young girl to lose her head. In any case, she’s the only one I’ve ever heard of with a one-way tie like that.”
“What does it feel like?” Steve finds himself asking, but the strange thing is how he knows the answer even before he finishes the question.
When you see them, it’s like everything slows down so you don’t miss them. Like something’s forcing you to pay attention. And once you do, it’s like everything else pales in comparison. You’re always thinking about them, always bumping into them and trying to be near them without thinking about it, because that’s where you’re happiest. Even if you don’t know it yet. Nobody can lift you up or put you down quicker than they can. They see more of you than anyone else, and you see them too. You can try and ignore the pull, but the tide will always bring you right back to them.
Steve listens to his grandpa wax on and on about what it was like when he first felt the connection with his grandmother and it should be just a sweet story to him. Something to give him hope for the future.
But what happened is his heart starts to beat and his palms start to sweat as Billy Hargrove’s face floats to the front of his mind where it absolutely doesn’t belong.
Unless…
But they can’t be. Can they?

Learning to Love 2
(Part 1, Part 2, Part 3,..)
Rating: Mature Relationship: Steve /Billy Tags: enemies to lovers, mention of parent's death (Steve's mom), mention of domestic violence Words: 1870
Tumblr media
Harrington's place is a solitary house in the middle of nothing, surrounded by the woods and nothing else. Billy appreciates the privacy; no noisy neighbors that might call the police if they hear a few screams, like it wasn’t a normal thing, and no one around to see him limp the day after. Not bad at all.
Neil was even proud of him when he told him that he was going to tutor the richest boy in town.
He literally said, "Kid, I'm proud of you." Which is a first in Billy's life.
If the big house and the heated pool didn't give away how rich Harrington's family is, the doorbell would, it sounds like the doorbell they have in the old big mansions and Billy is almost expecting a butler in a pressed uniform showing him the living room instead of his schoolmate.
"You came." Harrington says, almost surprised.
"Told you I would. Are you disappointed, pretty boy?"
Steve shrugs, moving from the door and gesturing to Billy to get inside. The house is super modern and cold, the living room seems ready to be the set of a sitcom, the kitchen is so clean that it almost shines and Steve's room is the most boring room he has ever seen; there is nothing personal, not a trinket, a picture, a sporting trophy, nothing at all, just a desk and few books there are lying on the side.
"Do you want something to drink?" Steve asks, annoyed.
"I'm not here for a courtesy visit, I'm here to help you because you are too stupid to do your fucking homework and you need a babysitter." Billy snarls, ready to fight, but Steve doesn't take the bait, he sits at his desk and stares at his books.
"Where would you like to start?" He asks, pointing at the pile of books.
"What do you need more help with?"
"Math."
"Let's start there."
Steve takes his book and opens it, staring at the first problem.
"Come on! It is an easy one!" Billy sighs, taking the book and quickly solving the problem while Steve stares blankly at him "Can you just concentrate a little for Christ's sake! You didn't even write the right numbers! Are you stupid? Can't you copy some fucking numbers?"
Steve flinches, moving away from Billy. Billy sighs, this is not going well. He takes a deep breath and thinks about the waves of the ocean, trying to calm himself and when he feels a little bit settled he asks "Why... why didn’t you write the correct numbers?"
"I did!" Steve replies, "I can copy some stupid numbers, ok?"
Billy stares at him for a long moment and he sees how the boy squints while reading.
"Do you wear glasses?" He asks and Steve glares at him.
"Of course I don't, jackass!"
"Well, maybe you should. Have you seen a doctor recently?" After Billy broke a plate on his head.
"I... I don't like doctors." Steve confesses blushing in embarrassment.
“Are you scared of doctors?” Billy mocks him and Steve turns his face, avoiding Billy’s stare “Are you serious?”
“I’m not scared… I just… I don't like them.”
Billy stares at him for the longest time before Steve finally cracks. “When mom went to the hospital… she never came back, ok? I know that’s stupid but I can’t deal with the smell of disinfectant ok? And I’m young and healthy, I don’t need a doctor!”
Billy can understand the fear of the doctors, the few times Neil brought him there with a broken arm or to fix his nose, he was always terrified that those doctors, who asked so many questions about how he got hurt, would have taken him away. Living with Neil was no fun, but living in a foster family didn’t sound much better either.
“I’m not saying you should do a complete checkup, I’m just suggesting that you might want to see an eye doctor, so maybe everyone will stop thinking that you’re stupid.”
“I don’t give a shit about what everyone else thinks about me! I was their fucking god and now what? You came to town, took my place and all my friends forgot about me. I guess they weren’t my friends after all and you are not my friend either! And I don’t need to study all this stupid shit because I’m going to work with my father as soon as I get out of high school! So what the fuck do you want from me? I’ll give you a good review, I’ll say that you were the best tutor ever. Let me copy you from your test and we’ll be good!”
Billy shakes his head “No.”
“What?!”
“No. I will not let you copy from me and I don’t give a fuck about your stupid opinion of my tutoring skills. I just gave you a suggestion, you don’t want to follow it? Fine.” Billy replies, ready to get back to his place. Harrington is avoiding his stare, he is clenching his fists so hard that his knuckles are white.
“Stop being such a baby. You can’t take any criticism!”
“What about you? You come here, to my house, telling me that I’m either stupid or blind! What did you expect?” Steve snaps.
Billy gets up, grabs his things, and pushes them in his backpack. Fuck Harrington! Billy doesn’t have to help him! He doesn’t owe him anything! It’s not his fault if his sight is shitty!
Only… maybe it is.
Only… Steve actually tried to help Max.
Only… Billy is not the dickhead he pretends to be.
“I could… I could come with you.” He suggests, keeping his back to Harrington, his hand on the handle of the door.
“And what? Hold my hand like a fucking child?” Steve snarls, throwing what’s left on the desk to the ground.
Billy dares to turn, this time it’s Steve who has his back turned. “If that’s what you need.” Billy steps forward, not daring to touch the other boy but wanting to let him know that he is there, that he is listening “Where is your father?”
“Russia? China? Don’t remember. He must have written it on the calendar, I don’t really check anymore.” Steve replies and Billy sighs. He never really understood how lonely Steve must feel now that his friends have turned their back on him and even his girlfriend left him.
“Was she worth it?” Billy asks, and Steve’s shoulders stiffen “Was she worth losing your privileges? And your friends?”
“If I lost my friend it is not her fault. She is… She was… well, she was everything I wanted, the only problem was that I wasn’t enough for her.” Steve says in a self-deprecating tone. “It’s the story of my life. I’m not bad, but I’m never enough, no matter how hard I try. Even my father thinks that I’m not enough and he should know, right? He is my father.”
Billy gets closer to Steve and forces him to turn toward him, “Listen to me. You are the only one who knows your worth, ok? Not Wheeler, not your father, not those stupid boys at school! And if you keep repeating to yourself that you are not enough, you’ll end up believing that! So look me in the eye and tell me something good about you.”
Steve tries to free himself from Billy’s grip “What the fuck? I don’t do this stupid shit. If I needed a therapist…”
“Look me in the eye and tell me something good about yourself.” That’s a game Billy’s mother made with him every time Neil belittled him, and it worked every single time.
“I… I…”
“One thing, I know you can do it.”
“I’m… I’m brave.”
Billy smiles “Yes, you are. Good job, Harrington.” He tells him, patting his back, ready to leave.
“Hey…” Steve calls him, finally getting up from the chair. “Would you like to stay for dinner? I was going to order pizza and watch a movie.”
Billy stops, wondering if Neil would get mad at him “Can I call home? I’m not sure if Susan already cooked.”
“Sure. The phone is in the living room.”
Billy and Steve get downstairs and Billy calls home, it’s Susan who answers and tells him that Neil is not home yet but that he can stay out for dinner, he just has to be home by ten.
They order pizza and watch a movie and for Billy it is the first time ever. He never invited anyone to his place and he didn’t get invited much, always too unpredictable to be invited to someone’s home. Maybe that’s why he and Steve are perfect; Steve feels like he is not enough, and Billy feels that he is too much.
“Will you book a visit to the eye doctor? I’ll drive you.” Billy asks while they are watching an action movie.
“I don’t know.”
It’s not a yes, but it’s not a no either, so Billy nods and goes back home. As soon as he enters his father calls him, asking him where he was, and when he tells him that he was at Harrington’s house his father seems really pleased. “Those rich boys are always stupid, aren’t they? But my boy is so clever that he is the one who is going to help that stupid kid. You’ll do great things, I know, you are just like me.”
Every time that Neil says that they are similar Billy feels some disgust about himself. He doesn't want to be like Neil, and even if he knows that his outbursts are so similar to the one his father has, he is trying his best not to become like him. Waking up one day and seeing Neil Hargrove in the mirror is Billy’s greatest fear. Not being beaten to death by his father, not getting married to a woman he will never love because he likes boys, not being trapped in a life he knows he will hate every single day. The only thing that terrifies him, the only ones he prays from every night, kneeling on the side of his bed, folded hands and eyes closed, is not becoming like his father.
He always lived a life where he was always ready to fight for dominance and he is so tired of being alert at all times.
Max is sitting next to Susan, watching a television show together, “Steve’s house is so cool, right? Did you see the heated swimming pool?”
“We studied, I wasn’t there to have fun.”
“I know…” Max snorts “I just thought that maybe… but you are right. You are no fun!” She rebukes, finally leaving him alone.
Billy’s room is full of music posters, he has a big stereo and a vanity made with plastic crates where his few precious belongings rest: a strong male perfume, the same brand his mother bought him years ago, and the golden necklace he received as a gift for his christening.
He stares at himself in the mirror, somehow he feels a little bit less angry and skittish, is it possible that spending time with Harrington might really be beneficial for both of them?

Billy's camaro Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 / Part 4
***
Steve is fucked.
That's it, this is the end. He's going to die now.
The smell of gasoline is getting stronger, and the heat is beyond unbearable. Steve understands what's going to happen next, how he will die.
Because the car is fire. Just like Billy Hargrove was.
And Steve .. stops fighting it. Stops tugging at the seatbelt, stops trying to unbuckle it. Stops squirming in the seat and trying to open the door.
Remembers how it went at the Byers'. When Billy was mounting him and beating him unconscious. Hit after hit after hit. When Steve gave up fighting because he could not possibly fight that all-consuming wave of rage.
He knows now that if maybe he had said "sorry" at that time, it's possible things would've gone differently. "Sorry I lied about your sister." That's all Steve had to say that night.
And then maybe Billy would've stopped.
Steve puts his hands on the steering wheel again, and although it burns like a motherfucker, he doesn't take them away.
He knows what he has to say. It comes out as a sob.
"I'M SORRY! .. I fucked up!! Listen, I was on drugs. Not that I took them voluntarily, I'd been injected with them against my will. I didn't know what I was doing. I would never. It was a mistake. It was all just a huge fucking mistake. And I'm sorry I did this to you! .. And .. I'm sorry about your owner .. he didn't deserve any of that."
He blurts it all out in one breath and feels tears coming to his eyes. He remembers the moment he had crashed into the camaro so vividly. The bang, the metallic, scraping sound, the triumph - he's played this scene in his mind over and over again. Steve thought he was doing something heroic then.
What a fucking joke.
The true hero? .. There's a tombstone on the real hero's grave. No-one, except their little team, knows what this boy had done, what he had been through.
But Steve knows. He knows now, after months of thinking, and reminiscing, and replaying everything in his mind again and again, months of sleepless nights, of could've should've would've..
They say you can't see big things when you're close to them. You see big things from a distance. From afar.
Steve has had enough distance to see everything.
He's had enough time to think.
It was all wrong.
It was all wrong, he was fucking wrong, and, honestly, all of them were horribly unforgivably wrong.
Even if they had killed Billy, how would it have helped them to fight the mindflayer? Hargrove was just a pawn.
Steve remembers how Billy got out of the burning car, how he didn't even look at Steve, who had just rammed his precious camaro, he didn't look at anyone. He just continued on his death march, through pain, through torture, through loss.
Steve's probably crying now, he can't really tell anymore. His head is floating.
"I'm so sorry.. I know I was so wrong. Let me make up for it, please. Let me make at least something right."
Steve is almost fainting from all the heat and the suffocating gasoline smell.
"I am a friend. I know I wasn't, but now I am. Let me make up for my mistake."
The car is fire.
"I'm not saying that just to save my ass right now. Why would I come here if I didn't want to find you? I'm so fucking sorry.."
Steve can't think straight any more. His mouth is dry, and he's losing his trail of thought. He's slipping, for real, he's falling, he is so full of regret, he's going to burn, he is ...
***
When Steve opens his eyes, he's still sitting on the driver's seat of the camaro. The sun is shining above them, and it's not .. it isn't hot anymore. The petrol smell is gone too. Steve checks the seatbelt, it's unbuckled and hanging on the side. He touches the wheel, it isn't hot. Steve opens the door, and it does open.
He's free to go.
The first urge is to get out of the car as soon as possible, right this second, and run. It had almost killed him. It had almost fucking burnt him alive.
Steve hurriedly puts one leg out but stops mid-movement. There's no need to be afraid. It's letting him go. He is free to go because it lets him.
So fuck it.
Instead, Steve opens the glove compartment one more time and takes out the Marlboro Reds. Fishes out a cigarette, looks for a lighter. Yeah, it's there, under the map of Hawkins.
Lights up. Inhales. Exhales.
"Listen. I meant every word I said. Let me take you away from here. I can't fix you myself, but I'll find a good place where it can be done."
His mouth is still dry, and the cigarette is awfully bitter, burning his tongue.
He'd kill for a drink of water. Gets out of the car, goes to the beamer, finds a bottle of "Aqua fresh." Drinks half of it and returns back to the camaro, still holding the cigarette.
"I'm gonna go now, but I'll come back tomorrow with a tow truck. We'll take you to a repair shop. I promise everything will turn out fine. Okay?"
Steve's completely nuts, he's talking to the wreck of a car. Still, he feels as if he's saying the sanest shit ever.
He takes out another Marlboro, lights it and fucking misses Billy. The guy he'd never had a decent conversation with.
"Just .. don't go anywhere, please. Wait for me."
***
Steve does some research. Calls his dad in his office and asks what repair shop is the best one.
"Steven, did you crash the beamer?"
"No, dad. No, I swear, it's for a friend."
Turns out, there is a place here. Old Joe's garage. If it doesn't work out here, dad gives him a couple of addresses in Indianapolis.
Next, Steve calls Family Video.
"Keith, I'm sick. Like, really sick. Passed out in the bathroom in the morning, that's why I didn't come in today. .. Yeah, I need tomorrow off too. .. Yeah, I know. .. I know I'm on thin ice. I'll work double shifts as soon as I'm feeling better. Thanks. .. Okay."
Next is the tow service.
Steve's got a plan.
Next day the camaro is waiting for him right where he left it, at the old junkyard.
***
"Sweet mother of Jesus! You want us to work with this??" Old Joe is not impressed.
"Look, I understand. But this car is very important to me, so I'm willing to pay .. a lot. Just name the price."
The old man is looking very doubtful.
"If you are really, absolutely sure there's nothing that can be done, I'll just find another place. I need this car up and running."
The mechanic is still looking at the camaro.
"Let me talk to my son.. The kid is better than me. Maybe we can figure something out. The spare parts though.. We'll have to order them from Indianapolis, so it'll definitely take a lot of time. And like you said, money."
"There's no rush. And money is not a problem. Just uh.. be gentle with her."
"Don't need to tell me that. She's a beauty. You know a good car when you see it, son."
***
It takes three months.
When Steve gets the call that he can finally come pick up the camaro, he's delirious with excitement. He's visited the garage often, wanted to see how certain things were done.
That day he might be imagining stuff, but he gets a feeling that the car is glad to see him too. All fixed and shiny with new paint, it's dazzling.
Steve thanks Old Joe and his son, pays the rest of the money and gets behind the wheel.
The car is .. really something. Sensitive to the touch, wild and very, very fast.
Steve needs to get used to it. Needs to learn all its nuances, its moods.
He does though. Leaves his beamer in the garage at home and starts driving the camaro instead. Has to explain to Max why he is suddenly the new owner of her dead brother's car. She calls him practically every day to take her places. Steve tries to always say yes, he knows that Max loves being in that car. She misses Billy too.
Steve drives it, parks it in his driveway. Takes good care of it. Listens to the engine's rumble as if it's talking to him.
He even kinda ..
Loves it.
Probably, not like Billy did. But Steve can't know. He can't know how Billy loved.
He fucking wishes he did. Did know that.
***
One November evening Steve's in the kitchen downstairs. He hears some sounds outside. Grabs the bat and carefully opens the door. Takes a peek. No-one. The camaro is standing in the driveway, covered in dew.
He comes out of the house and looks around. Everything is quiet.
Steve has an eerie feeling someone's been here. Or still is here, lurking in the shadows.
He comes closer to the camaro.
Steve's breath catches in his throat.
Tumblr media
Is written on the dewy windshield.
Holy fuck.
Holy fucking hell.
Billy Hargrove is alive.
"Billy ..?"

“You can take me,” you tell Steve before he has a chance to say hello.
You’d lied awake for hours after Billy had left last night, thinking about how while at first the idea of going to the dance with Steve as a game to Billy you’ve come to realize that’s exactly what it was, a game to Billy. It hurt that he would use the opportunity to have yet another leg up on Steve in this dumb feud they had going on. And it wasn’t even like Steve would know, it was like Billy wanted to hurt him and play mind games Steve wouldn’t even realize Billy was behind. You thought about calling off the whole plan but decided you deserved to actually have some fun and Steve was very much that. Conversations between you two were as easy as they come. Steve made you laugh and you liked the contrast between his easy going attitude and Billy’s intensity.
“Really?” Steve chirped, “Awesome, so uh, cool, cool, yeah.”
“I’ll pick a red dress,” you interpret his stuttering, hand on his chest because you see Billy out of the corner of your eye and maybe you can play the game to your advantage. “Pick me up at 5 for dinner.”
You wave goodbye, eyes darting back to see Billy with amused wide eyes which he has to mask quickly when Tommy walks up to him. You wonder who Billy’s going to go to the dance with, the idea making your stomach twist in jealousy. Which only worsens when you get to class and hear other girls talking about it. Since he hadn’t been making moved on anyone and was seemingly single they figured it was open season.
“You think he’s going to ask someone? Would it be totally weird to ask him?” you overhear Peggy’s voice and roll your eyes. Of course she’s still pining over him. Then you fall down a rabbit hole of thinking about Billy having sex with these girls. Did he touch them the way he touched you? The sensations were extremely hard to forget, not that you really tried to. Was what you two shared special and saved just for you or did he make all these other women crumble under his touch as well? You’re thinking about it for the rest of the school day, flashes of Billy sweating over top the list of women you know he’s been with.
“Why are you so quiet?” he asks on the ride home. Max has headphones on so you’re tempted to admit the reason you haven’t said a single word to him but it just doesn’t feel like the right moment. The two of you never talked about feelings when the sun was still out.
“Just a weird day,” you explain which isn’t exactly a lie.
“Is it about winter formal? Listen, I’d like to take you but…” He starts.
You interrupt, “It’ll ruin what we have.” You’ve heard him say it a couple times. You’ve told him you understand every time. “That’s not what I’m upset about.”
Billy squeezes your thigh and you picture him doing it to every bitch that’s been in his car so you jerk away. “I’m fine,” you insist and look out the window.
He backs off with a sigh, turning the dial up on his stereo to drown out the bad mood. You don’t say bye when he parks in front of his house, storming in your house and slamming the door behind you. Since the house is empty you scream out, closing your eyes tight when you do so and not giving a shit if Billy could hear it. However, you don’t expect to see your dad and little brother running into the living room.
“Oh,” your cheeks flush, “I thought I was alone.”
Your dad looks even more worried than before, “You okay?”
“I got asked to Winter Formal,” you tell him, tossing your backpack on the ground. “What are you two doing home?”
“Your brother is ‘sick’,” your dad says with air quotes, “Had to leave work early to get him. The neighbor boy ask you?”
“No, Billy didn’t ask me. One of the most popular boys asked me,” you vent to him.
He takes the opportunity, you usually never complained about your love life to him. He grabs a beer from the fridge and offers it to you, “Why didn’t Billy ask you if he’s been sneaking into your room for months?”
“His dad wouldn’t like me,” you admit, opening the beer and guzzling it down. You half expect your dad to scold you but he doesn’t.
“Ya know, I had to work on his dads car the other week… he’s a real dick,” your dad levels with you.
“So I’ve heard.”
“Did you say yes?” he asks, grabbing a beer for himself.
“I… Billy told me to and I do want to go so yes, I said yes. But I don’t want to hurt this guy because I like him but… I like him like I like Eddie,” you spew out.
Your dad sighs, joining you at the kitchen table. “It’s not good to lead people on. I think you oughta tell this fella you just want to be friends.”
You think about your light flirting with Steve earlier that day. It felt good to flirt with him but it’s not like you wanted to break things off with Billy to pursue Steve. “I know,” you sigh, “I just wish things could be different with Billy.”
“Compromise is important. I learned that with your mom. I wished things were different with her but when I look back, I wished I was more patient and compassionate,” your dad reveals and it breaks your heart a bit. You missed your mom but you thought your dad was a good guy and if she couldn’t even bother to check in every once in a while then maybe she was the bad actor.
You have no idea how to talk to your dad about your mom leaving so you just nod, “You’re right…” you sigh and stand up, “I’m gonna go out front for a bit.”
Your dad grins with a nod, “Do what feels right, pumpkin.”
When you’re outside you see Billy taking out the trash, watching as you light your smoke and you raise your beer to him. He shakes his head but he’s smiling before he blows you a kiss. You feel your heart skip a bit, swooning for him easily before he’s back inside. You couldn’t tell your dad about the intimate reasons you were upset. You didn’t bother Eddie with sexual details or problems so that left the problem to talk to it about. Which you weren’t looking forward to but for your sanity you had to ask him.
-
You’re waiting for Billy to call since you’d kind of given him the cold shoulder you expected him to give you space. You glance to your alarm clock and see it’s nearing midnight. If he was gonna call it would have been by now. You sigh and get up, standing in your mirror while you undress. You watch yourself and wonder if anything was different between you and Peggy, underneath it all. Peggy probably wears nighties, you think and without much of a second thought, you’re digging in your closet for the one you own, a Christmas present from your grandma. You hold the hanger in front of you, a simple white slip with a delicate lace along the décolletage. She’d probably wear something like this, you think as you pull it over your naked body.
Knock, knock. Your head snaps towards the window to see Billy looking back at you with a surprised grin on his face. You walk over, unlocking the window before sliding it open.
“I’ve never seen that before,” he says, his mouth hanging open when he’s finished.
“You’re gonna drool,” you shut is jaw with a gentle hand before helping him inside.
Billy shuts the blinds behind him and wraps his arms around your waist, “You expecting me?”
“Oh, god, you would like this,” you roll your eyes and pull away.
Billy grabs your wrist and tilts his head, quizzically, “Am I not supposed to?”
“No!” You exclaim, “It’s not me! You’re not supposed to like it!”
His smile falters and his eyebrows knit together in confusion, “What’s going on?”
Crossing your arms over your chest, you suddenly feel exposed and ashamed. Billy’s fingers dance under your elbow and arms. He steps closer, eyes expectant while he waits for you to answer. You’re afraid you’ll start to cry if you open your mouth, looking up at him fearful.
“Baby…” he mutters, “Talk to me.”
His voice is quiet but his eyes on you make the room seem smaller and smaller with each second.
“Am… am I different?”
“Incredibly,” he whispers, “Weirdest person I’ve met.” The smirk on his face isn’t soothing in any way.
“No… like,” you let out a shaky breath. “Do you touch other girls like you touch me?”
Confusion and anger cover his expressions, “What? I haven’t touch-“
“When you did, before me, after we did, I mean have you fucked them like me or is it different?” you interrupt him, finally relieved to get this off your chest.
Billy pauses, unsure of how to answer that question or what exactly it implied. He couldn’t help if he knew how to make women come undone for him. “What are you talking about?”
“Peggy wants to ask you to the dance. You fucked her forever ago and she’s still thinking about you. I can’t fathom the thought of you… I don’t know, Billy.”
“Hey, hey,” he sits you down the bed and gets on his knees between your legs, “it is so different for you and I.”
“You made them feel how you make me feel,” you mutter out, the tears spilling out finally.
“But I’m here with you, I stopped sleeping with other girls, babe. For you. You make me feel better than they ever could,” he says and you can’t believe the words coming from him or how easy it is for him to comfort you. “I don’t care if they still want me, you shouldn’t either. They can’t have me, but you do.”
“But Billy… they still talk about you,” you blubber, palms smearing your tears away as they coat your flushed cheeks.
He sighs then, sitting on his heels. He’s quiet for a second and then he’s taking his dagger earring off and putting it on your ear. You hadn’t even realized he took it back from you. “Have this. Wear it everyday. I know it’s not me screaming from the rooftops that we’re together but it’s what I can do for now,” he’s saying, eyes trained on hours.
The gesture is sweet and calms you down slightly. He laces his fingers in yours and squeezes, “You’re different in the best way. I promise you, it’s different. I actually like you.”
You smile, “You mean it?”
“Lemme show you,” Billy’s bunching your night gown up and his mouth is between your legs. You watch him, licking between your folds and the sensation sends shivers up your spine. Say what they will, they didn’t have Billy like you did.
His fingers snake up your nightgown and graze against your nipple, tongue focused at your opening, sliding into you. Falling onto your back, your fingers grip his curls and pull him closer.
“Billy… feels so good…” you praise, lifting your feet to the edge of the mattress.
“Tastes even better,” he pulls away to mumble and the compliment floors you, pushing his face back.
His tongue broadly licks up your slit, shaking his head to aid when the tip of his tongue is pressed at your clit. Every concern slipping away from his deliberate actions. He’s entering you with two fingers and you feel the pressure building efficiently, tearing you apart expertly.
“I’m.. I’m gonna cum,” you stutter out, thighs clenching around his face and your back arched.
Billy quickens his pace, nodding his head up and down while his fingers twist and curl inside you. When you start to pant, he wraps his lips around your clit and sucks which pushes you over the edge. “Billy!” you gasp, pulling at his hair and thrashing against his face.
“You’re mine,” he says when your faces meet again, tearing the nightie off of you.
“Mine..” you mumble out lazily, your body still on cloud nine.
“Yours,” Billy’s mouthing against your ear, peeling his shirt from his torso. You help him with his shoes and pants even though you’re suddenly exhausted. You want him to have you.
“Say it again,” you whimper, feeling his tip press against your entrance.
“I’m yours,” he says through gritted teeth as he inches inside of you.
“All mine,” you say, drunk on the passion as you wrap your legs around his waist and tug him closer.
Billy bites your bottom lip then, pushing the rest of the way and you feel him fill you up. You moan into his mouth when his fingers curl around your hip, everything falling apart around the two of you. He falters a bit, chuckling softly when he stills.
“Jesus,” he exhales, “I’m already close… give me a minute.”
It’s the highest compliment he could’ve paid you and you giggle back, “Thank you.”
“Oh, shut up,” he seethes but he’s smiling.
“You last long with them?” you tease, fingers grazing his chest and then curling around the necklace he’s always wearing. You think it’s the Virgin Mary, definitely something catholic.
Billy gently flicks your nose, looking pointedly at you, “This doesn’t typically happen, no.”
You shudder underneath him, tightening your legs around his waist. The stimulation takes his breath from his lungs and he’s pushing you down by your chest, “Give me a minute for fucks sake.”
“What if I want you to cum?” you challenge, rolling your hips against him.
“Then I will,” he keeps his palm pressed hard on your sternum. He starts moving again, pounding hard into you. Hard enough that it startles you and actually kind of hurt. You gasp and he grabs your chin roughly, tilting your head back but his eyes fierce. “But you’re gonna look at me while I do it. You look away and I won’t be happy.”
You’re curious so you tear your eyes away from his face, down to his chest. Billy’s quick to slap you, grabbing onto your jaw again and scolding you, “I fucking mean it.”
“Yes, Sir…” you pant, the carnal assault bringing a flood of arousal from you, only making the sound of his pumping into your wetness louder.
“Good girl,” he spits and it doesn’t sound like praise but like he expects this from you.
“You like when I’m a good girl?” you say through pouted lips.
Billy grits his teeth, thumb digging into your cheek. “Good girls don’t ask dumb questions,” he fumes, his hips relentless against you.
“I’m only bad for you,” you counter, your confidence in speaking is a show of how close you are to a second orgasm.
“I want you to be good right now,” he pants, holding his gaze into your eyes. You wonder if your banter is helping postpone or hastening his own climax.
“Make me be good,” you challenge and Billy’s pulling out to flip you over onto your stomach, grabbing your wrists in his hands and pinning them behind against the small of your back as he penetrates you hard.
“You little slut,” he slanders, driving his hips back and forth at a harsh pace. He’s successful shutting you up, the ferocious onslaught pushing the air from your lungs. He spanks your ass as he unloads inside of you, your own orgasm erupting in sync with him.
“Billy!” you cry out, shaking beneath him.
You both come down, breathing like you’d been holding it in for hours.
“I assure you, it was never anything like that,” he pants, eyes tightly closed.
-
Dress shopping was not fun. You’d dragged Eddie along for moral support but he wasn’t help at all, laughing at most ensembles you’d tried on. “You look like a cake topper.”
“That’s it,” you say, staring back at a foreign reflection. “I’m not going.”
Eddie rolls his eyes, “Oh, come on.”
Like some saving grace, you see Billy walking into the store. You lift an eyebrow in surprise, asking what he’s doing there. Then Max walks in behind him, looking out of place just like you.
“I need a dress,” she mutters and you smile, happy that someone had asked her to the Snowball Dance.
“It’s slim Pickens,” you inform her.
“Why not this?” Billy holds up a sleek, red gown. There’s no frills to it at all and you wonder why you couldn’t find it.
“Huh, more my style than Max’s,” you counter and Billy guffaws.
“Gee, I wonder why,” he shoves the hanger in your hand.
You slip away to try the dress on and realize just what a saving grace Billy was. It was like he knew your body better than you did. The god damn thing fit you like a glove, even if it had an absurd amount of cleavage spilling out. You’d never felt sexier, staring back at the mirror. You decide to make Billy wait, changing out of the dress but holding it to your chest.
“Please tell me it’s a winner?” Eddie begs, a hopeful glint in his eye. You’d promised to visit the comic store after this.
“Billy’s omnipresent or something,” you mutter, not wanting to admit he’d picked the perfect dress for you within seconds of arriving.
Billy smirks, “Ya gonna make me wait to see it, huh?”
“Max! Let me help you find something,” you usher the redhead off, not wanting to give Billy the satisfaction.
When you glance back to see him and Eddie getting along, your heart skips a beat thinking of what could be if only he didn’t have to keep you hidden. You shove it down, watching at what Max pulls from the racks. She doesn’t seem to like anything so you counter, “I went to the Snowball dance both years in junior high. You don’t really have to wear a dress.”
“My mom wants me to pick a dress out,” she counters and you nod.
“Let’s try to find something simple, then. I’m not much of a dress girl either, but our dance has a strict dress code,” you say. After a moment of thumbing through the racks, you pull one out, just a simple green dress. “How about this?”
Max looks at it intrigued, fingertips ghosting the velvet. “I guess this could work,” she decides, grabbing it from you and heading towards Billy. She hands it to him and says, “Here.”
Billy looks over to you appreciatively, “Well that was painless.” But he snakes to snatch the dress in your hand, taking it to the counter. You protest but it’s fruitless. Billy’s paying for your dress and handing the bag to you. “I’ll see you around.”
Eddie scoffs as Billy and Max walk out of the boutique, “That guy is something else.”
“I’ll say,” you sigh, grabbing Eddie’s hand and pulling him towards the comic store.
-
With knuckles against your door, Steve feels anxious. You were hard to understand, pushing and pulling away from him. He couldn’t read you at all and that was part of what kept him interested. As he’s waiting outside, he catches Billy and his little step sister walking to his Camaro.
“King Steve,” he hears behind him, having turned away. Billy’s standing there, wearing a suit, hair meticulously styled and a simple stud in his ear.
“Can I help you?” Steve challenges, his hair is always perfectly sculpted, he spent an hour on it.
“No,” Billy shrugs, but before he can continue your dad opens the door.
“Hi, Dale,” Billy beams, confusing your dad, seeing two men standing in almost matching suits, the only difference in bow ties. Steve’s red to match your dress and Billy’s is a hot pink.
“Hello, Billy,” your dad greets, turning to your date and saying, “You must be Steve.”
“Billy! Let’s go!” Max calls out and Billy stifles his anger.
“Have a goodnight, Harrington,” he spits before walking back to his Camaro.
Steve extends his hand to your dad, “Nice to meet you.”
Your dad invites Steve inside, who then excuses himself in the bathroom before you walk out into the kitchen.
“Your boyfriend intimated your date,” your dad lets you know, looking amused.
“Oh, God,” you sigh, grimacing at the thought but thankfully you don’t have time to stew on it as Steve’s exiting the bathroom.
“You look amazing,” he says, out of breath as if he doesn’t see your dad standing next to you.
“So do you,” you tell him, smiling wide. Steve does look good, he usually looks pretty prim and proper but something about him in a tuxedo has you thinking about him in ways you never have.
“I’m right here,” your dad speaks up, chuckling as he does so.
Steve’s eyes widen, “Yeah! Oh, I’m sorry! It’s… sorry, I,” he grabs the corsage he’d left on the counter and presents it to you. You extend your wrist towards him with a flutter of your eyelashes, watching as he adorns the gorgeous rose.
“It’s pretty,” you note, a satisfied smile plastered on your face.
“Just like you,” Steve points out.
Your dad extends his hand to Steve, your date taking it in a firm handshake, “Take care of her.”
Steve nods, then moves towards the door. Your dad hugs you, whispering “Now that’s how a man should treat you.” before pulling away.
“Thank you,” you look into his eyes, you think he’s right but that Billy would… if he could.
The restaurant Steve takes you to is the nicest place you’ve been. It isn’t a diner at the edge of town. There’s many other kids from school here. You don’t see Billy and his date, thankfully. He never told you who he was going with but you weren’t sure if you’d hoped it was someone he hasn’t slept with or some poor sap he’d already fooled around with. You scold yourself for thinking about him in this moment. Right now was about you and your date. You were determined to have a good time. You order a glass of wine and Steve widens his eyes, perhaps impressed by your boldness. You supply your fake ID to the waiter and it’s accepted so he in turn offers Steve a glass. He accepts and you’re pleased to impress the man across from you.
“You’re something else,” Steve smiles, leaning across the table to take his hand in yours.
“I’ve heard that before,” you quip with a cocky smirk.
The food is good and the company even better. Steve is funny and charming, it would’ve been so easy for him to get in your pants if you weren’t spoken for. He’s handsome as hell too but equipped with a boyish charm that works so well. And God, you think, it would be easy to fall into something steady with him. Due to the three glasses of wine, you wonder what Steve’s like between the sheets. You imagine a slew of praises and what kind of noises he’d make with his dick in your mouth. Never in the past three years would you imagine you’d be here with the King of Hawkins High. The alcohol mixed with the the attention has you pressing Steve against his car in the parking lot, kissing him intensely and adoring the way it takes him by surprise.
“Wines the secret ingredient I needed, eh?” He mumbles when you pull away.
“You look good in a suit,” you shrug before trailing to the other side of his BMW. “Let’s go dance the night way, pretty boy.”
“No need to pull my arm,” he quips.
The high school gym looks like a sad car with a new paint job, the streamers doing little to distract you from the fact that you’re at Hawkin’s High. You immediately catch Billy’s eyes, he’s seeing you in the dress he’d bought for the first time. He’d seen it on the rack next to your mirror but he’d longed for the moment he got to see it draping to your curves. You hold Steve’s hand in yours, noticing as heads turn towards the two of you. You thought you looked so good in the dress no one was calling you a freak. But the looks were definitely because Steve brought a freak to Winter Formal and that freak looked hot.
“Jesus Christ,” Tommy mutters to Billy who is also staring at you. He’s about to mirror Tommy’s thirst but catches himself.
“Whatever,” Billy mutters, slinging an arm over Molly’s shoulder.
Cutting Crew’s “(I Just) Died In Your Arms” starts playing and you grab Steve’s hand, pulling him to the punch bowl. When you get your drink, you feel the alcohol burn your throat. Thank God it’s been spiked. This would be a long night without it.
Billy’s watching across the gym, a little taken aback but the jealousy he feels in the pit of his stomach. But it’s your fault, right? He told you to go with Steve but he didn’t tell you to enjoy it. He seethes, watching after you both down a glass of punch before strutting to the dance floor. He hates how romantic this song is, seeing you drape arms around Steve as you sway together. He’d give anything to hear what you two were whispering back and forth. He’d really love to go up and sock Steve right in the face, but that’d be to obvious. No, he’d have to play dirty. Molly’s blabbering in his ear and he regretted the entire game, seeing how carefree and fun you seemed around his arch nemesis. He grabs Molly’s clutch, digging through it for the flask he’d stashed inside, though the whiskey inside isn’t much help.
When Sweet Dreams bubbles out of the speakers, he’s dragging Molly to the dance floor making sure he’s in your eyesight. He turns her around, hands on her hips and he grinds against her bottom with his eyes trained on you. Steve’s blissfully unaware of the competition at hand, gasping in your ear when you mimic Billy and Molly. You swing your hand up to lace through the bottom of Steve’s mullet. You think about kissing Steve but it’s too early. You’d fuck with Billy later, this is what he wanted after all.
After a few songs, you excuse yourself from Steve, explaining you need a cigarette badly. You let him think it’s from arousal but truly, you need a breath of air. It’s also an invitation for Billy that he takes, stalking out after you.
“Having fun?” he sneers as he catches you lighting your smoke.
You guffaw, hearing as the song before bleeds into Don’t Dream It’s Over by Crowded House. “I’m at a school dance watching the man I love grind against some whore,” your voice is venomous.
“I’m having the time of my life too,” Billy’s heart skips when you inadvertently admit you love him but hey, time and place. “It’s not fun watching heart eyes and grabby hands.”
“You told me to go with him, motherfucker,” you seethe, but internally feigning over the jealousy he exudes.
Billy scoffs, taking a deep drag from his own smoke.
“And Molly?” you laugh, “I should’ve guessed. Oh, Billy is just so cute! He’s just so kissable. Fucking gag me with a spoon.”
Billy greets his teeth, “I have something else I’d rather gag you with.”
You laugh harshly, the alcohol really showing itself when you comeback with, “Oh please Billy! I want nothing else than for you to get off in my throat where no one can see! Our little secret.”
“Cut the sarcasm, bitch,” Billy spits, pushing you against the wall.
“The fuck is wrong with you? You have to get drunk to spend the night with Harrington?”
“Had to get drunk to deal with you tonight. Steve’s a breeze to be around,” you quip and Billy’s got his hand on your throat as a reaction.
“You like getting a rise out of me,” he reasons, frowning around the words, “You’re not a filthy slut but you sure like acting like one to get my attention.”
You look him dead in the eye, “Let go of me or I’ll scream.”
Billy gives a laugh full of discredit, pushing you further.
“Oh my god, what are you doing? Billy, stop! You’re hurting me!” You claim and when you open wide to scream his hand is forcing your mouth shut.
“I don’t like the game you’re playing,” he says, eyes wary.
You bite his hand and he pulls away.
“Tell me you love me,” you appeal, eyes trained on his. “Tell me you love me and fucking mean it, Billy.”
He closes his eyes and blows air out of his nose, like he’s dejected. “You’re such a bitch,” he mutters, eyes fluttering open again but you’re serious.
“Tell me,” you shrill, “Tell me or I’m done. I’ll go home with Ste-“
“I love you, okay!” he drops his hand from his hands from your shoulders.
You pull him close, feeling his breath against your lips, “Again.”
“I love you,” he whispers.
“I love you too, Billy Hargrove,” you say breathlessly before pulling him into a bruising kiss.
You could feel he meant it, especially with the way he kisses you back. You leave in two days for Florida and you really couldn’t leave without the admission. You melt into him and the two of you share a beautiful moment but it’s cut short by a girl neither of you know, storming out in tears. You both retract, as if you weren’t just sharing the most important stage of your relationship.
“You should get back to Steve,” Billy says dejectedly.
“One more time,” you plead.
“I love you,” he indulges, a quick kiss.
“I love you too,” you mutter, pulling back to stumble back into the dance. Everything seems different. You don’t want to go back to Steve, you want to follow Billy to his Camaro and get a motel somewhere far.
Take my breath away you hear through the fogginess of the smoke machines, seeing Steve fiddling with his fingers at a table. This isn’t fair, you think as you collapse into the chair next to him. Steve saw Billy follow you and the flush on your face but he doesn’t tell you.
“You want me to take you home?” he asks and you nod.
“Please…”

part two of “billy tries so hard not to fall in love with steve (and fails)”.
“look, i know i’m an asshole” billy says, still so close to him. “and i know apes have better mannerism than i have, that i look like i don’t give a shit. but that. is nothing personal. okay? i’m just not a people person, i need constant space and i need to leave when things start to feel serious.”
“billy. you don’t even call me by my name. how is that serious?” steve rubs his face with both hands, then he folds his arms on his chest again.
billy takes the hint and takes a step back. “it is to me. i don’t call you steve cause that feels personal. i don’t stay in your bed after we fuck, cause that feels personal. i don’t want to hear your stories, because that feels too personal.”
“and why is that bad?” steve asks.
this also feels too personal, but now it’s too late.
“because if it’s personal, it means that we’re close. and if we’re close...” it takes him a moment to end the sentence, and he can’t do it looking him in the eyes, so he draws them on steve’s hands and then admits, “it means i have something to lose”.
steve tilts his head back, his arms still folded on his chest while he looks at billy. “i get it, but then i don’t understand this: what’s the point? why’d you kiss me?”
which is a fair question, billy’s gotta say it. “i don’t know. i just... i miss you, i told you.” billy is more honest than he thought he would be, but at this point why would he lie? what good would it do? he’d already exposed himself, anyway.
“you mean you miss the sex.”
billy can’t say if it’s a statement or a question, but it pisses him off whether it’s the first or the second. “i mean i missed you, harrington” he says, and he regrets the name almost the exact moment it slips from his lips.
he surely regrets it when the little muscles around the corner of steve’s lips curl and kind of shape it in a little, sad pout.
“look. i’m not gonna lie, i missed the sex too, but do you really think that you’re my only chance to get laid? i don’t just miss you cause you give me the best orgasms.”
“what do you miss, then? what can you possibly miss about me, when you’ve barely treated me like a hole this whole time? i don’t understand.”
billy’s heart sinks at those words. “i know i was a huge asshole and i’m sorry for that. i didn’t really mean to. i was just trying my best not to let you come too close. i know occasional sex can be tricky.”
“answer me. what do you miss, if it’s not just the sex?” steve sound so suspicious, like he’s sure there’s nothing billy could possibly appreciate about him enough for him to miss his presence. billy knows he really fucked up.
he takes a moment before he answer, and he feels steve’s compelling stare. “you smell really nice” he says then. “your breath” he gulps nervously, interrupting himself, “smells nice.” what the fuck, billy. “you like phil collins, which is embarrassing, but it suits you. i know it cause you’ve got all the damn tapes piled up on the desk next to your bed and they once fell on my face when you were pounding me so g—”
“jesus christ shut up.”
“—and your writing is the ugliest, i still got your stupid ice cream shaped little post it with your number on it sticked in the sun visor in my car, but you made that cute little heart drawing with the devil’s horns and tail, i couldn’t physically throw it away.”
“you kept it?”
“yeah.”
“it was a joke, that stupid drawing.” steve’s ears go red.
billy can’t help but grin. “it’s ugly. it’s the wonkiest heart i’ve ever seen.”
steve shoves him gently by the shoulder. “shut up. you kept it.”
“i kept it.” billy curls his finger around the front belt loop of steve’s denim, and tugs him a little closer. he can’t help himself. “i like the fact that you’re a nice person, even though you don’t believe it, for reasons that i ignore.”
billy also ignores the little twitch of steve’s eyebrow that confirms what he just said.
“i like that you’re dyslexic but it pisses me off that you won’t—”
“wait, what?” steve’s face flushes a hot, fluorescent pink while he nervously laughs. “you like that i’m dyslexic? what does that even mean? it doesn’t even sound like a compliment...”
“that’s cause it’s not a compliment” billy lets his fingers graze on steve’s hips only to get to wrap his arms around his tiny waist.
“...”
“i’m not joking, i like it. it’s a steve thing. it’s part of you and it’s... i don’t know. look, i suck at this kind of things. i know you a little, i know how i feel when i’m with you and i kind of miss it.”
steve has his arms folded on his chest between them. he hums. billy would pay to know what’s going on under that nest of messy, fluffy hair. he hates the silence and that stance too. like steve wants to put distance between them. but at the same time he could get rid of billy’s embrace, which he didn’t, and that gives billy a little hope.
“okay” steve says, eventually.
“okay...?” billy repeats prompting him to be more explicit.
“i believe you.”
of fucking course, he wants to say. he didn’t make a fool out of himself admitting all those embarrassing things to him only to be questioned? why would he lie about it, anyway? stupid harrington. he won’t be hearing of any more of those nauseatingly sweet things anytime soon.
“well, thanks” he just says, still a little anxious about what’s coming next. he hopes it’s not a but.
“but” here we go... “i don’t know what you expect from me, then. you want to fuck and then what?”
billy lets out a heavy sigh and lets his hands drop from steve’s waist.
“hey. get back here.” steve doesn’t sound like he’ll accept no's.
so billy gets back to wrap his arms around him, even though his stomach is still tense.
“i did not tell you to get off, did i?” steve sounds dead serious.
billy holds him tighter out of spite. and nostalgy.
steve unfolds his arms and let his hands linger on the other boy’s biceps.
“what do you want to do, billy?” he asks again. “you want to fuck and then what? because if we’re going back to you treating me like a hole we’re not going to—”
“please don’t say that” billy interrupts him.
it’s steve’s turn to sigh, this time. he draws those slender fingers of his on his chest. billy is glad he busts his own ass off in the gym. “alright. but i mean it, we’re not going far if you plan on going back to strangers fifty seconds after you give me the best orgasms of my life.”
billy’s pride sings for a moment, but he still struggles with the rest, so he can’t brag right now.
“look, i get it. boundaries. we can have them, bills. i’m not asking for you to stay the night and hold my hand and sing me to sleep. just. i don’t know.”
billy wants to eat his stupid worried face and shower it with kisses and the thought makes his stomach twist, but what can he do? the other option is going back to being avoided and he hates the thought even more.
“we can hang out sometimes maybe? when i’m not actually busy or something” he tries.
“i mean, you don’t have to” steve don’t look at him in the eyes, like billy’s jacket is too interesting all of the sudden. “i don’t want you to feel forced to do something you don’t want to...”
“it’s not really like i don’t want to, though” he admits.
“it’s not?”
that stupid hopeful face he makes. billy wants once again to skin him alive.
“can i kiss you again?” he asks, before he can hold himself.
steve’s face goes all red again. “you better. you’ll need a lot of those if you want me to forgive you.”
billy leans in and gives a quick peck on his lips, tightening his grip on the boy’s hips. “oh, it’s like that, uh?”
“it’s like that...”
steve says that with the velvetiest voice, and billy chases his lips, catching them on a kiss that soon becomes sloppy and wet and deep, they kiss with tongue and teeth and hot breaths and fingertips. steve makes the most delicious whines, and billy can’t help but pull at his hair, bringing him closer, licking into his mouth and savoring him like it’s the last meal of his life. steve melts into the kiss, billy can feel the way he goes limp against him, the way his arms are hanging loose and relaxed around his shoulders.
“it’s so unfair that you kiss like this and we only started now” steve whines, pinching his nipple as a punishment.
billy flicks his forehead in return. “ow.”
“you owe me a hundred kisses at least, hargrove.”
billy leans in to kiss his lips again briefly. “yeah, yeah, you already said that.”
steve grins from ear to ear, lips stretched against billy’s. billy bite them.
“what the fuck are laughing for?”
“i can’t believe you kept the drawing.”
he regrets it already and makes that obvious rolling his eyes on the back of his skull. “shut up. i’m throwing it in the trash.”
“no you’re not.” steve kisses him.
“no i’m not.”
and steve kisses him again. and then billy is opening his mouth, angling his head just a little to be comfortable to dive into steve’s parted lips again. steve tastes like booze and cigarettes and billy loves it.
they’re never going back to not kissing.

“It’s not like I’ve never seen you like this before,” you say on the phone, while you’re looking for your clothes.
“You said the same thing, last night,” Billy replies and you’re imagining his stupid smirk on his lips, right now.
“Tell me what happened this time, Billy or I swear that I’m gonna go to bed again,” you affirm, while changing into some fresh clothes. You hear him sigh on the other line of the phone.
Billy called you in the middle of the night, something you’re used to, but this time it feels different. He always calls when he needs some stitches after a fight or when he drank a lot because his father scolded him, but now his voice is tense. He almost didn’t even reach out for you, because he didn’t want you to see him like that.
“Just come here,” he says. Then he adds: “Please”.
You arrive at the pub a few minutes later. The bartender doesn’t even has to show you the way, because you see him instantly. He’s sitting at the counter, a finger drawing some circles on the edge of the empty glass. He seems sad, not amused as he always looks.
“Billy?” You call him, sitting next to him.
He turns immediately and you see some sparkles being born into his eyes. He hugs you, holding onto you for dear life. His perfume is intoxicating: you can smell it even underneath the beer and the smoking. For a moment, you think he’s crying on your shoulder, instead, he has only left a small kiss on your neck and when the awareness hits you, shivers slid down your spine. He's not somebody who likes to show you his affection to you with this cute gestures, so you’re surprised that he did that this time. You’re still thinking about it, when you notice that he’s now again distant from you, with his body but also his mind. He’s probably still wondering whether to tell you what happened or not, but you’re not going to leave this place if he doesn’t, so it’s not like he has a choice.
“Baby? Hey, look at me,” you say, while turning his chin to you with a finger.
“Baby…” He repeats, with a pair of glossy eyes. “I forgot how sweet your voice sounds when you call me like that”.
“Billy, you’re scaring me,” you say. Why does it feel like he’s dying?
“I’m sorry, I just… I just… I don’t know, Y/N. Maybe I was wrong about a lot of things. Maybe I was wrong about you too”.
You gulp.
“What do you mean?”
“I’ve been trying to convince myself for months that I deserve your kindness, but I don’t. I’m not worthy of you. You shouldn’t accept my anger or to take me home in the middle of the night anymore. It’s better for you to date somebody else, somebody who treats you right. Even Harrington could…”
“Alright, stop it, stop it,” you interrupt him. “Is your father still messing with your head? You said that sleeping at my house is helping you, because you barely see him now. So what is it? I’ve never been into Steve. Did he make you think that I am?”
He shakes his head, but he doesn’t talk. It’s like he’s fighting with himself about something, but you can’t catch his glances. Then, his gaze is wandering up and down your collarbone and you finally understand.
“It’s the necklace, isn’t it?” You ask and he clenches his jaw. “It’s because you gave me your necklace. Are you scared of your own feelings, Billy?” You murmur the last sentence and he grips the glass.
“You don’t have to take me home, I can walk. Come back to your house, you’re wasting your time with me anyway,” he says, but you hold his wrist.
“Who talked with you today? Because yesterday, when you gifted that necklace to me, you seemed quite serious about us. Billy, we’ve been together for a year! It’s not like I don’t know who you are,” you reply.
“I’ve told you so many terrible things, I’ve driven fast with you by my side because I was jealous, I… You should really find someone else, Y/N, someone better than me…” He says, while shaking his head with his eyes closed.
“What did you do, Billy?”
“Nothing, I swear!” He exclaims, then he squeezes your hand. “Please, you have to believe me”.
“I do, baby, I do,” you say, while caressing his cheeks and he relaxes in the palms of your hands. “And you don’t do those things anymore, now. You’re sleeping better, you’re barely drinking and you don’t beat people anymore. Whoever hurt you is gonna talk to me about it,” you say.
He sighs, then he clenches his jaw again. He leaves a kiss on the back of your hand with softness and your heart melts.
“Don’t do it. Don’t come for them,” he says, serious. He even seems himself again.
“It’s Max, isn’t it?” You guess and he instantly looks at you in disbelief. “She’s the only one you would protect, apart from me. What did she do?”
“I was mean to her for no reason as always and she told me that I don’t deserve somebody so amazing like you, but she’s right, Y/N,” he affirms again.
“Billy, I just wanna be with you. That’s all. Max was upset and she said something she didn’t want to say. I bet that she’s gonna apologize tomorrow. Anyway, the decision is mine and I don’t want to leave you. Alright? Not now, not ever,” you tell him, then you give him a smile and he sighs.
“It’s not fair that I need you so much, while you don’t. Don’t give up on me, okay? Even if I behave like a bad guy, I would never hurt you. Just fight with me, okay? Tell me when I’m wrong, I won’t yell at you again like I did a year ago. I’ll listen to you. I won’t drive fast again,” he says, then he hugs you again, so tight you almost can’t even breathe.
“Billy, I need you too, but now you have to let me go in order to breathe again,” you joke and he does what asked.
“Sorry, sweetheart”.
“And you haven’t been the bad guy for months, now. You’re different, Billy. It’s gonna be alright”.
He doesn’t say the he loves you. It’s not something he does. But the way he looks at you, oh, if eyes could talk, he would have told you that by now. How much fondness can be into someone’s heart? So you take his hand and go to your car, in order to come back home together.
When the two of you sit in the car, you catch him looking at your neck again.
“You know, that necklace… looks pretty good on you”.
“If you’re gonna say something related to me being sexy with it, I swear…”
“No, no,” he chuckles and his smile makes you feel your ears on fire. He’s still the most handsome guy of Hawkins, for you. “I just wanted to say something really cheeky, but maybe it’s better not to. I have to protect my reputation, after all,” he says, while winking at you.
You approach him in silence, with a sly look. He stares at you, confused. Then you capture his lips in a passionate kiss and he seems to die there, on that seat.
You’re still trying to catch your breath, when you finally talk again: “Tell me”.
"Are you trying to manipulate me?"
"Perhaps".
"Someday, I hope that necklace is a ring."
You smile at him.
"I’d like that".

Random thoughts about Hawaii Five-0 rewatch: part 3/?
Last random thought for a while, because I need to find the time to skip between s6-s10 DVDs.
Thought #4: dude....love triangles only apply to romantically and sexually involved people, so no, don't worry, we won't "call it bromance", or: The Prom Date parallel, or: The Real Jersey Slip.
This one is really just on my mind, but since I was skipping between contents just to make sure everything was (probably) working (Danny's negativity is powerful in me), I happened to land onto two specific bits of dialogue which made me bitter-laugh so madly.
The incriminated dialogues are found in the s4 Shorelines (I think), and in the commentary (courtesy of Lenkov, O'Loughlin, and Park) for 3x17 aka the Pro Bowl date episode.
I'm reasoning backwards, because what the writers were saying, extensively, about the Billy storyline, was that they wanted to show a different side of McGarrett: he's sure of himself, self-confident, cocky even, when coming to his job and skills....but what about his feelings and personal life? He does have a vulnerable, doubtful side, one which makes him feel stuttering when coming to relationships. He trusts Catherine (ouch), and Billy too because they used to be battlefield brothers. But does he? So they explored this jealous side of him, one he's not proud of and which he desperately tries to stifle, deny, push down and downplay, because admitting it would mean feeling weak.
Also, Billy's death would've put Catherine in a place where she didn't have purpose in life anymore, where she felt guilty for something she was trained to prevent, bringing her to seek Steve's presence as a friend too (!!!!) to have a shoulder to cry onto.
This is absolute perfect, and I do appreciate the effort and the general masterplan...even if as usual, character-study is not the main interest for an older audience thus it was obviously shallow and just hinted at, in reality....and also they shamefully killed Billy after a few episodes instead of exploring this "love triangle" in depth.
That's it. That's the exact idiom they used for the Billy/Catherine arc. Love triangle. Which is absolutely the correct term for the situation. Let's pack it for later, and let's move to the 3x17 commentary.
What's so funny to me, is that when the (in)famous "Cath gets ditched because Steve is going with Danny" scene comes on screen, you hear PL almost absentmindedly perking up and laughing, saying something like "Oh, and here we are at the classic love triangle drama!".....then suddenly shuts up because he gets aware of what he just said.
At this point things get frenzy, they laugh, Grace cheers, and someone (PL? Alex?) hurries to add "C'mon Steve, don't be that man who ditches his girlfriend to go out with his best friend!", to save the situation.
Only problem is, we hear Alex (I think it’s his voice this time), saying "It's exactly like one of those awkward moments when you're asked for prom, but you turn down the person because you already have a date".
And we really remember when that other "prom date moment" was, right?
I really can't understand why they chose to ditch all this potential they were all clearly aware of, just for heteronormativity sake. A man and a woman can be platonic best friends. Two men can be completely romantically committed to each other. I really can't see what the problem is.

Chapter Five
Previous Chapter
Tumblr media
CW: Drug use
Kim felt so awkward sitting in the car as Billy drove off from Addi’s house. Her tongue licked over her teeth, trying to will herself to ask him anything.
She hated herself. She wanted to be closer to him yet far, far away at the same time. She glanced at the side of his face and looked away again.
He was truly unbothered as he drove and smoked. She listened to his music, trying to pretend that she was far away from here. She didn’t know why he had acted like they had to leave that instant. She had walked there without his help and didn’t understand why she would need to get back home with his help.
“Where did you get your swimming suit from?” He asked at last. She figured he had been working on asking her that, waiting until Addi was gone so he could question her. She shrugged feeling bashful.
“From the mall. It’s just a swimming suit.” She pleaded her case as he looked over at her, through his sunglasses. He laughed.
“You know my dad wouldn’t say that. He’d say a lot worse if he knew about it.” He told her what she already knew. She sighed.
“Well, what he doesn’t know won’t hurt him, right?” She smiled at him, but he just stared at her blankly.
“I’m getting tired of holding your secrets, you know.” He puffed his smoke out the window as the houses raced past them. She didn’t like to admit how much she enjoyed it when he went fast. Not quite at this moment, however, she was still feeling a bit ill from the three large brownies she had devoured.
“It’s not a secret. He just doesn’t need to know.” She defended herself. He was right though; she really didn’t trust him to be her secret keeper. She still wasn’t sure how much she could trust him, or if she could at all.
“Right and when he does eventually find out are you going to tell him you got it for the rich Harrington boy?” He mocked playfully and she felt herself growing irritated that he wouldn’t just drop the conversation. It was a bikini, loads of girls her age wore them.
“I didn’t wear it for Steve. I didn’t even know he was going to be there. God, you’re so annoying.” She huffed as she crossed her arms, not realizing what she had just admitted.
“Who?” She turned to face him again at the sudden question. She raised her eyebrows and waited for him to continue, “If you didn’t wear it for Steve then who did you wear it for?”
Shit, shit, shit, shit.
She blanched as she raked her mind for an excuse. She couldn't tell him that she had worn it for him, that she wanted to see just how crazy she drove him as well. She was too embarrassed to ever admit that.
“Who? Myself. I don’t need a guy to look at me like that.” She snapped back at him, hoping he would buy the answer. He turned to look at her for a moment and she glanced away to the road. She couldn’t let him know what she was thinking.
“Right. So, what are you going to ask this dude out or just keep staring at him like a creep?” She frowned.
“Like those moms that stare at you? Are you mad you have some competition?” She challenged, watching as he scrunched his nose while he smiled.
“Are you jealous or something? I don’t have any competition. I think you’re the only one that’s into Pretty Boy.” She knew he was wrong. She still heard the way girls talked about him. Not to mention she was pretty sure he had a girlfriend anyways.
Robin.
“Okay, yes, I bought some nice clothes at the beginning of the summer to impress him. Not that it matters because I didn’t wear it for him. He has a girlfriend anyways.” She added, clearly sounding defeated at the end of her sentence. Billy was silent for a moment before looking at her.
“Hey, I’m sorry. I’m just looking after you. In any case, he’s an idiot. You’re a lot better looking than any of the girls he’s ever been with.” Kim felt her face ignite as he complimented her. She convinced herself he was just being nice and wasn’t suggesting anything else.
Yet, Kim felt her heart pounding against her chest as she looked at him. He had clearly been watching her at the pool and they had stared each other down pretty hard if she admitted it. She took a breath of confidence.
“Did you think I looked pretty?” She crossed her right leg over her left one as she turned to face him, batting her eyelashes in his direction. She was just trying to annoy him the way he annoyed her, she promised herself.
His cigarette almost slipped from his lips as he looked at her, surprised by her sudden boldness, she was sure. He hastily threw it out the window, cleared his throat and put both hands on the wheel as he stared forward out the front window.
“Uh yeah, yeah you do.” He snagged his bottom lip between his teeth as he drove. She faltered for a moment as focused on how he said she does look pretty, not that she did. She watched as his hands tightened around the wheel, his fingers beginning to turn white as he gripped it so hard.
“I like feeling pretty," She leaned against the dashboard, testing her boundaries as her arms pressed against her chest and heightened her cleavage just a bit. His blue eyes slowly grazed over her body before turning back to the road. She watched as he shifted in his seat, trying to examine his body language the same way he seemed to know hers, “So can you please not tell Neil? So, I can continue to look pretty?” She pleaded softly. She figured she’d never wear the bikini again, but maybe she would.
“Yeah, yeah I guess.” He muttered, hitting on the gas a little harder. Kim lurched forward and adjusted in her seat to keep from flying against the dashboard. She shot him a glare as she sat back in her seat.
“What’s your issue with Steve anyways?” She watched him curiously. He turned to her; annoyance written across his face.
“He’s a dick.” Was all he said as he turned fast on the familiar street corner. A small squeal left her mouth as she pressed into the side of the door. Her heart hammered in her chest as he pulled onto the side of the street.
He was out of the car quicker than she was able to unbuckle her seat belt. She reached for her pool bag, pulling it on her lap and making sure the best of her things was in order before she got out.
“You coming?” Her head snapped hard to the side when she watched him open the door for her. He’d never done that before.
She swung her long legs out and nodded at him. She rose from the seat, standing up straight and meeting his gaze. She moved out of the way as he closed the door, her back leaning back against the car door as he trapped her, standing inches away from there.
She felt her pulse begin to quicken, every breath she took pressed her chest up against his. He only stood a few inches taller than her but, in this position, it felt like he towered over her. She felt like she was a prey who had just been trapped by their predator, ready to be devoured.
“Hi.” She squeaked out watching the grin form on his lips. His fingertips traced along the side of her shorts as he watched her. She felt her breath hitch as she looked at him curiously, wondering what he was thinking. She couldn’t imagine what others would think if they saw the two of them standing this close together.
“Hi,” He grinned down at her, “You swear you didn’t wear that for Pretty Boy?” She wasn’t sure how to answer him, instead focusing on how his fingers felt like they were burning through her clothes and lighting her skin aflame.
“No, I didn’t even know Steve was going to be there.” She didn’t understand why he kept asking her the same question or why he was standing so close to her with his hands on her hips. She was facing a moral dilemma as the line between them kept getting smaller and smaller.
Billy’s large hands began to rub circles through her shirt as a grin began to form against his lips. She looked away from his eyes, instead focusing on the necklace that dangled down his chest. Her heart was racing, she didn’t see Neil’s vehicle but that didn’t mean that he was gone. She didn’t know what either of them would do if someone saw them this close.
“So, who’d you wear it for? Don’t bullshit me, I know that’s not the type of clothing you wear.” He said simply, his eyes raking over her face. Kim felt flustered and knew it wasn’t from the hot summer sun beating down on the side of her face. The golden light hit Billy’s tan skin perfectly, showing off his freckles and tanned skin. He looked like one of the romantic heroes in the books that she would binge, and she hated to think of him in that way.
Kim looked at him, afraid of how she would answer him. She didn’t want to lie but there was no way she could tell him the truth. If she told him that she had worn that little bikini for him then he would know that he had some sort of hold on her. She could already imagine his disgusted expression and the way he would never let that die.
“I wanted to be noticed,” She spoke up after a moment, watching his soft eyes. She had never known someone to hold eye contact so intensely before, “Guys don’t notice me and I thought maybe this would help.” It wasn’t the exact truth, but it was as best as she could do. She couldn’t read the expression on his face as she leaned back against his car, ignoring how the blue paint was scalding from the sun.
“You’re going to give people the wrong idea,” He spoke after a moment, and she watched how his lips moved when he spoke. She had never noticed how annoyingly white and straight his teeth were, “Especially guys. They’ll just take advantage of you. They won’t even fuck you right, they’ll be too focused on their own pleasure. You deserve better than that.”
She thought she might have a heart attack with the way her heart was beating inside her chest. He was confusing her so badly that she didn’t know what to think. She couldn’t understand why he’d touch her like this and then slyly add comments that made her overthink the meaning.
Sure, she could brush it off as him being a protective older brother. They never had that relationship before. He had never cared about her existence other than to bicker about her needing to get her own license and to occasionally ask to copy off of her homework.
“What did you mean when you said if I needed help all I need to do is ask?” She asked so softly that she almost didn’t hear herself speak at all. A grin rose on his face as he began to pull away from her.
“I guess you’ll have to ask to find out,” By now he was standing a few feet away from her, yet she still remained squished against his car, “You’re watching Max and her friend tonight. I have a date.”
A date?
She felt her head spin around as she lurched off of his car and followed him up the steps into the house. She tried to keep up with his pace as she raced up the steps, ignoring how the cool, cold air from the AC felt nice against her sweaty skin.
“You have a date?” Her mouth felt like there was cotton in it as he turned to look at her, not looking the least bit upset.
“Yeah, it’s Friday. I’m not going to sit around here all night and babysit.” He replied as he walked down the hall to his room. Kim stood in the same spot, fuming.
How was it even fair for him to have any right to tell her that no guy deserved her, when it was so easy for him to run off with whichever girl, he found interesting at the moment. She was sure, had she put in the effort at the pool, that she could’ve made some plans with Steve. Or even any other guy that was there at the pool.
She had options. There was someone out there that was interested in her.
“I’m not babysitting!” She yelled after Billy as he slammed his door shut. She didn’t even have to leave the pool with him, he made her. He dragged her all the way back to the house just so she could watch Max. She didn’t even know that Neil and her mom would be gone tonight, although she should’ve known better.
“It’s not babysitting,” Max spoke up from her room, peeking her head out. She looked very annoyed, “I have a friend over and we all know you have no plans anyways.” Max shrugged, looking too smug as she shut her door again. Kim groaned in frustration, stomping all the way to her room before launching herself on her bed. She pulled a pink pillow to her chest, resisting the urge to cry.
She blamed it on all the different emotions she’d been feeling and on the slight possibility that she may be starting her period soon. She didn’t want to admit that Billy had some kind of control over her. She wouldn’t sink that low.
She rolled over on her back, praying that this would be what she needed to tell her mind to fuck off and stop giving her such vivid and dirty images about him. She sighed, feeling an odd trembling sensation building in her stomach and spreading down her legs and arms. She brushed it off as anger.
She looked up when she saw her younger, fiery sister and her quiet friend standing in the doorway. She could remember when her mother told her she’d be having a baby sister and had felt so over the moon. She absolutely loved baby dolls at that age. She’d do their hair, dress them up, and have tea parties with them. And she was finally going to have her own little baby doll to play with.
Wrong.
From the moment Max was brought home she hated to be messed with. Kim was only three at the time, but learned fast that her and her sister were two completely different bodies. Max loved to skateboard, to play sports and get dirty. Kim preferred to spend her time in the library, reading and working on art projects.
Max’s friend, El, was more than enthusiastic to have her play with her hair and paint her nails. It wasn’t that Max didn’t enjoy it, but it was only when she wanted to do it. El always sat so still and patient while she let Kim figure out different ways to design her short hair.
“Yes?” She questioned watching as the two of them stared at her. She felt an odd sensation that she needed to giggle rising in her stomach, so she swallowed that down.
“Are you going to order us pizza?” Max asked as El nudged her. Kim raised her eyebrow and waited, “Could you pretty please order us pizza?” Max tried again, placing a wide smile across her lips.
“Since you asked so nicely,” Kim stood up, feeling wobbly on her feet as she walked towards them. She stopped to squeeze her sister's soft face, “Awe we’re gonna have a girl's night!” She exclaimed, all of her angry emotions from a few moments ago were gone. El giggled and moved out of her way, while Max groaned and rubbed her now red face.
Kim kept blinking as she walked towards the wall phone, feeling her eyes beginning to squint. She pulled off the piece of paper that her mother had left, the number to the pizza place printed clearly in her pretty handwriting.
She thought about how good a piece of greasy pizza would taste right now, the melty cheese and hot sauce dripping on her tongue. It took all of her willpower not to moan.
Kim got halfway through punching in the numbers, when she had to hang up and attempt it again. This time she only got three numbers in before she forgot which one, she was at. She kept squinting, her eyes burning as she stared at the numbers.
She attempted again, this time dropping the phone before she could finish putting in the first two numbers. She laughed, sliding down the wall as she thought about how klutzy she was.
Max peeked over the couch, looking at her with wide blue eyes. El had a sloppy grin on her face, holding her hand up so she could whisper something to Max. Kim couldn’t help the giggles that poured out of her, now. Everything was becoming too much for her.
“I can’t put in the number,” She waved the paper around her head, motioning to Max, “I don’t think I can stand up either.” She replied seriously before feeling the urge to laugh again.
She was beginning to wonder if those brownies weren’t just regular brownies.
“My sister would not-” She heard Max say as she turned from El and looked back at Kim. She took in Kim’s appearance before cursing. El looked just as amused as Kim felt and the both of them burst into a fit of giggles as they looked at each other.
Kim wasn’t sure what was so funny but laughing just felt like the right thing to do. For the first time in her life, she felt so relaxed and carefree. She began pressing her fingertips together, admiring the tingling feeling that was shooting through them.
“Uh,” Max stood up from the couch, staring down at her older sister looking very unsure of herself, “Stay right here.” She muttered before walking down the hall. El leaned over the couch, crossing her arms as she looked at the older girl.
“You wanna hear a joke?” She asked, looking mischievous. Kim nodded eagerly watching the younger girl think about her joke before speaking.
“What did Cinderella say when she got to the ball?” El asked, glancing around to make sure no one else was around. Kim felt her eyebrow furrow as she leaned forward on her palms and shook her head.
“She gagged.” It took a moment of realization before Kim was lying on the ground, clutching her stomach as she fought through her giggles. She couldn’t stop laughing against the cold floor, her insides aching as she laid her palms against her stomach to calm herself. She turned on her back, trying to relax as she opened her eyes to see Billy and Max peering down at her.
She snorted as another fit bubbled up, realizing they were wearing the same expression as they watched her. She could still hear El giggling, though it was fainter now as Billy had come into the room.
“Are you high?” He asked her very seriously. He looked different upside down, she realized. However, she could still tell by the way the front of his hair was messy that he had been in the process of curling it.
“Were you grooming yourself?” She sassed back, watching as irritation began to replace his concerned look. She could tell Max was trying not to laugh as she looked away from her sister.
“What the hell did you do?” He repeated again as he squatted down and tried to get her into a sitting position. She groaned, lightly pressing her hand against his chest and staying limp so she could keep resting on the floor.
“I’m comfortable here, thank you very much.” She responded as she rested her back against the floor, liking how cold it felt against her skin.
“It’s probably dirty down there.” Max spoke up. Kim glanced over at El before laughing again, thinking about how funny her joke had been. Billy gripped both of her shoulders, heaving her up hard so she was sitting up in front of him. A gasp left her mouth and she grinned, reached out to pat his hardened jaw before she could stop herself.
“My hero, thank you for saving me from the dirty floor.” She added playfully, not even caring what anyone thought. She could tell he was exasperated as he gripped onto her shoulders to keep her from lying back down. Max crouched down next to him, looking at her concerned.
Kim thought about how the two were so similar yet hated each other so much.
“What did you take?” Billy asked again, looking less friendly this time. Kim tried to force her eyes wider apart to look at him, but found they were too far squinted to do it. She shrugged, nonchalant.
“Come on, we won't tell mom or dad.” Max pleaded, still looking concerned. Kim felt her resolve breaking.
“A brownie.” She said simply, knowing this was all ridiculous. They were overreacting. She was fine. Max turned to look at her older brother.
“Why would a brownie make her do this?” She asked, not quite understanding. Kim thought she looked adorable being so confused. She really wanted to squeeze her cheeks again but resisted doing so.
“You brat. How much did you take?” Billy snapped, obviously knowing what she meant by a brownie. He ignored Max’s gaze and continued to stare at Kim. She felt the same way she did when she had been thinking about chowing down on a slice of pizza. A moan was bubbling in her stomach and electricity pulsed through her body as the way he called her a brat bounced around in her head.
“Jonathan gets brownies sometimes; they have weed in them.” El whispered the last part to Max, and Max turned to her sister horrified. She was sure Max didn’t think she’d ever do something like that.
She counted on her fingers for a moment.
“Just three brownies, okay? They were just brownies. I didn’t taste any weed in them, at all.” Her words were becoming more sluggish and felt odd coming off of her tongue. It was like it was taking more effort for her to speak.
Billy’s blue eyes widened as he stared at her, at a loss for words as he took in the girl in front of her. Kim wiggled her eyebrows.
“Can we get pizza or what?” She asked looking at the three people who kept staring at her, “I could really eat some right now.” She added, watching as Billy examined her.
“Go sit on the couch, I’ll order it before I leave. I’m serious, I have better things to do than sit here watching the three of you all night.” He huffed out, letting her go and standing up. Kim looked at Max, watching as the younger girl was now sporting an amused expression.
“Yeah, yeah.” Kim responded but continued to sit on the floor, feeling like she didn’t have the ability to walk to the couch. She watched as Max headed back to El and began deciding which movie they were going to watch.
Kim stretched her legs out, her hands in her lap as she watched Billy order the food. She stared up the side of his body, taking in how muscular he really was. For the first time she didn’t feel bad about her thoughts towards him, instead, she felt like welcoming them.
He shot her a look as he hung up the phone, his foot pushing the side of her calf gently. She watched as her foot rolled to the side before sitting up again. She grinned up at him.
“I thought I told you to go to the couch?” He asked irritably. She stretched her arms out in the air, holding them over her head.
“My legs won’t work.” She said simply, grinning like a fool as he realized what he wanted to do. She figured it wouldn’t work and she would just end up crawling her way across the floor until she reached the seats. She watched him pinch the bridge of his nose and sigh very loudly.
She was starting to put her arms down when he crouched down near her again, an arm holding onto her back and under her thighs. She squealed, pleased as she carried her towards the couch.
She laid against his chest, taking in his warmth as she wrapped her arms around his neck. She was careful to make sure she didn’t pull on his hair as she did so.
“You look nice.” She muttered, still smiling. He really did too. His jeans fit him nice and his shirt, like always, had one too many buttons undone.
“Shut up.” He grumbled back before stopping at the couch, waiting a moment for the two younger girls to scoot out of the way before plopping her down. A loud shriek left Kim’s mouth as she laughed in delight, enjoying the drop down a bit too much.
Billy just huffed before he stomped out of the room. Kim listened to his door slam shut and gave the two girls a playful look.
“Did I say something wrong?” El giggled, resting her arms against Kim’s legs as she stretched out on the couch. Even Max was grinning now.
“Why would you take that many? You know if mom and dad were home, you’d be in so much trouble.” Kim knew Max was right, but she just waved the young girl off, too high to care about what could have happened. She rested back against the arm of the chair, thinking about how good a slice of pizza would taste right now. She wondered when it would get here.
Kim listened as the two began discussing different subjects, boys, music, comics, and more boys. She cracked a grin a few times, never interrupting, just glad that her sister had found a place here.
“Did you find a movie yet?” Billy walked out of his room briskly. Kim tried to follow his footsteps to the front door with her eyes, but found the movement was too much. She listened as he opened the door.
That awoke her. She felt herself sitting up, breathing in the steamy smell of greasy pizza as he carried the two boxes to the living room. Throwing a stack of napkins and paper plates down.
“You got soda, didn’t you?” Max asked and Kim hoped the question was yes. She would do anything to taste and feel the sweet carbonation traveling down her body. Billy sighed before grabbing it off the counter.
Kim didn’t wait for anyone else before she made her plate. She held up the slice, looking in awe at how the cheese was perfectly browned and the crust was golden. She lifted it up to her tongue, moaning as she bit into it and let the garlicky sauce lick at her taste buds.
She opened her eyes to see Billy staring at her, his jaw slack as he held a slice of pizza between the box and his plate. She chewed thoroughly, raising her eyebrow.
“I thought you had a date, and you were absolutely not canceling it?” She mocked as she finished her slice, she was sure this was the best meal she had ever had. El and Max grinned next to her, a small whisper of not having to hear happy screams was heard.
Billy stood up straight as he stared her down, then looked at the other two.
“Not like any of you left me a choice. I’m not leaving Hopper’s daughter alone with someone who's high off her ass. I’m not going down for that.” He defended. He walked towards Kim and began to sit down next to her. She scooted over closer to El, trying not to get squashed by him in the process. She could hear Max protest as she moved.
No one really stayed in the living room, at least not when Neil was around. Apparently, they needed a bigger couch for when he was gone.
“Sure.” She drew the syllables as she looked at him, “You just know you didn’t want to miss out on this awesome night.” She concluded as she began her second slice of pizza and reached for the soda.
Max gripped the 2 liter in her hand tightly, “How about I pour it for you?” Kim nodded happily, watching as her sister worked. She passed the drink to her, which Kim accepted with glee.
“Did you decide on a movie then?” Billy asked dryly, his elbow hitting Kim’s ribs as he adjusted in his seat. She jolted as he hit right where she was ticklish. She shot him a glare, pinned between him and El.
El shifted as Max scooted down to grab the remote, pressing play, “Nightmare on Elm Street is up first.” Kim groaned as she heard the title, knowing how much Max loved scary movies. She was completely opposite, hating the way the nightmares attacked her later.
“It’s so scary.” She whined as she swallowed the rest of her complaint down with soda. Yeah, yeah that was good, she decided. Max and El gave her an incredulous look.
“It’s not that scary.” Max spoke up and shook her red hair. Kim knew she wouldn’t win as she turned to look at Billy, their shoulders pressed together. He shifted again, his shoulder toppling over hers as his hand lingered dangerously close to her thigh. She stared, imagining how it would look as he squeezed her thigh.
“Don’t look at me. She’s right.” Billy shrugged as he continued eating. Kim sighed playfully, accepting the fact that she would have nightmares tonight. She tucked into the couch, hiding behind his shoulder.
“Fine, but you guys better not complain when I crawl into bed with you tonight.” She muttered, licking the grease off the side of her thumb. She turned her eyes to see Billy watching her, an unreadable expression on his face, “Who were you supposed to see tonight?” She asked, trying to be coy. He raised his eyebrow as he watched her.
“Does it matter? The date isn’t happening.” She wanted to say that it served him right for making her leave the pool early but resisted the urge to do so. She knew it would do nothing but irritate him more. There was something nice about him joining them to watch a movie.
She quieted down when it finally started, not wanting to annoy the two girls as it played. Max gave them all a temporary relief when she stood up to turn the light off. Paranoia crawled up Kim as she kept glancing over her arm to look behind her every time the scary music started to play.
“You’ve got to stop,” Max whined when she turned to face her again, “You’re gonna freak us out.” She huffed, moving to the floor and pulling El down with her.
“I told you it’s scary!” Kim defended herself, no longer finding everything hilarious. She kept jumping, moving closer to Billy as every little thing frightened her. She began to scoot away, freeing up some space between them when she fell for another jump scare. She was practically in his lap as she held onto his waist, a shrill shriek threatening to spill out.
She listened to him chuckle, feeling his chest move as he did so. She spared a glance at him as she curled against his side, thankful for his arm that moved around her. She felt a lot safer here, under his protective arm.
“You really are a scaredy cat, Mayfield.” She cursed him as she laid there, pulling a blanket over her legs so no demons would grab ahold of her feet.
Or Max. Max tended to do that a lot. She shivered as she thought about how Max went through a phase of hiding in dark spots in her room with a white sheet over her head.
She clutched him closer as another scary part appeared, curling her legs up to her chest. She tried to focus on the movie, instead of the way his fingers were tracing designs onto her back. She wondered how he was warm all the time, when she always felt so cold.
She had never sat in such a position with him before and wondered if it was just him being nice, actually concerned that she would do something dumb, or if there was another reason he was holding onto her. Her eyes were beginning to close as she drifted off, Billy being the only thing to cross her thoughts.
///////
She didn’t know how late it was, but felt her comforter being placed over her as she could see the darkness engulfing her room. She fluttered her eyes, still dazed and sleepy as she adjusted her head on her pillow.
She turned to her back, noticing him pulling away like he was going to leave. She reached out, taking his hand softly. It was so dark she couldn’t see his face or expression, but she knew it was Billy. Her voice faltered as she thought about asking him to turn on her night light, images from the movie flickering in her mind.
“Stay,” She spoke softly, sleep threatening to take over as she kept blinking her eyes to stay focused on him, “Please.” She spoke even more gently, for even in the dark she could sense his hesitation.
He sighed as he slid into bed next to her, making her bed shift completely as he got comfortable. In the back of her mind, she could feel laughter growing as she thought of Billy, all macho, covered in her green and pink flowery sheets.
Billy muttered something under his breath, but she was too far gone to listen to what he was saying. Her eyes closed as she moved closer to him, not close enough to touch, just seeking his warmth as she felt herself departing into a deep sleep.

Steve, Steve, Steve, Steve, Steve. All you did was talk about Steve fucking Harrington. Billy was getting pissed just thinking about it. You were a sweet girl in his math class. He instantly charmed his way into your life as one of your friends, but he couldn’t get past your crush. You had a crush on Steve Harrington, his archenemy. This crush had been going on longer than you had known Billy. He couldn’t understand it. Steve Harrington was nothing compared to him. Billy was hotter, more popular, and could hold his alcohol way better… and yet, here you were, leaning against his car, and drooling over Steve from a distance.
Billy thought that you were gorgeous from the moment he laid eyes on you. He knew you were the one for him. He switched into your math class after a week of being in a different one and every night he thanked the stars the guidance counselor had put him in your class. He just couldn’t wrap his head around your crush on Steve. The motherfucker didn’t even give you the time of day most days. Billy didn’t understand why you would still be pining after Steve when he was right there next to you. He watched as your expression dropped. It was like all the life had been sucked out of you. He followed your gaze to Steve; the lanky ex-king was standing near his car, his hands were awkwardly by his sides. His ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend were talking to him about something; Billy could only take a wild guess as to what. He was smiling at his ex like he had all the love in the world to give, even though she clearly did not feel the same way about him. Billy looked back at you; it looked like Steve had stomped on your heart. Your shoulders were hunched and your eyes looked heavy. “Ugh… Nancy Wheeler…” you mumbled. “What does she have that I don’t?”
What does Steve have that I don’t? Billy wondered. “She’s got nothing on you, Doll.” It was a bold statement, but he believed it with his whole heart. You raised your eyebrow and crossed your arms over your chest. He rolled his eyes. “What? I mean it. Nancy’s something else, but she’s nothing compared to you. Steve’s an idiot if he doesn’t see that.”
You tossed him a soft smile. “Thanks, Billy. I appreciate it. Though, Nancy’s with Jonathan now, Steve only seems to have eyes for her.”
God, I would do anything to see her smile all the time. “Anything for you, Doll. Don’t give another thought to Steve. He doesn’t deserve you at this point.”
“You two are disgusting,” Max said as she approached the Camaro. “Just confess you’re in love and make out already.”
Billy glared at her, but she glared right back. Ever since the day at the Byers’ house, they had a deeper understanding of each other. Billy stayed out of her friendships, relationships, and honestly, her entire life for the most part now. It wouldn’t be long before school ended for the year and he wouldn’t really be seeing her at all. Max now also had confirmation that Billy was in love with you. While completely high out of his mind on Will’s medications, Billy confessed. Max had known it already, but now she had heard it from Billy’s mouth. She wouldn’t let him live it down and he was starting to get really sick of it. His relationship with his step-sister was getting better; he could feel himself becoming a better person overall. Between you and the fight with Steve, he realized his shittiness. He was working on it a lot. Now if Max could just stop being so goddamn relentless in her efforts to get you to realize his crush– “Max!” It was all he could manage. His cheeks were dusted with a light red color. She smirked and you giggled. Billy relaxed a little bit when he heard that sound. Max scooted past you and chucked herself into the backseat of the Camaro. Billy opened the driver’s door and grimaced at her. “Little Shit…” He swore under his breath.
“I only speak the truth, Billy.” Her smirk never faded.
Billy was cursing under his breath again and moved to the passenger side door, to stand next to you. You had started to stare off into the distance again. You were still watching Steve and Nancy. He huffed. “Come on, Y/n. Let’s get you home. You got here early today didn’t you?”
You tore your eyes away from the couple as Billy opened his car door for you. “Yeah… I did.” You hopped into the passenger seat and Billy shut the door behind you. He looked back toward Steve’s car. Steve was now just talking to Nancy. Jonathan was walking back toward his car. The whole group of them were strange and confusing to Billy. He understood nothing of their friendships or why they all still talked. The rumor was that Nancy cheated on Steve. You were trying so hard to get Steve’s attention all the time. How could he not see it?
He shot an angry look toward Steve. Nancy had pointed out his staring, though he didn’t much care what either of them thought of him. He headed back to the driver’s side door and hopped into his car. He smiled at you. “Do you guys want to stop for milkshakes on the way home?” Max smiled excitedly and he saw it from the rearview mirror. He looked toward you. “So that’s a yes from Max, what about you Y/n.”
You shrugged. It was a content shrug though. Your features were finally relaxed and you were focused entirely on Billy. “Sure, why the hell not.”
| < ♥️ > |
It was almost the last day of school and Billy still felt like he hadn’t made progress on asking you out. You spent almost all your time between classes and during free periods together, but you still seemed hung up on Steve. After your talk over the Camaro, you seemed to calm down some with your crush. Billy thought that maybe, just maybe, you were starting to angle your affection toward him. Steve proved his theory wrong, though, during the last real week before exams. The forming king of Hawkins complimented your outfit one day in the hall. Billy was standing next to you; you were both leaning against the lockers. You were wearing one of his band t-shirts and just about the cutest skirt he had ever seen. It took everything in him not to actually drool when he saw you that morning.
While you were talking at the lockers, he had finally convinced himself it was worth a shot to ask you on a date. He was about to ask when Steve cut in. “Damn, Y/n. You are looking good today.”
You blushed wildly. “Thanks, Steve! See you at the practice game later!”
“I’ll win just for you, Beautiful.”
Billy just about killed him. His angry glare didn’t go unnoticed by Steve, but Harrington just seemed to brush it off. After that little interaction, you didn’t say anything to Billy about him, but Hargrove could just tell that you were thinking about Steve fucking Harrington.
| < ♥️ > |
When it came time for that practice game, of course, Billy and Steve were on opposite teams. Steve smiled at you when you walked in and sat down on the bleachers. Billy didn’t look at you, he felt like he couldn’t. You were honestly a little hurt by Billy’s lack of noticing you, but you just thought he was focusing on the game ahead of him. A lot of people were just hanging around in the gym because classes were pretty much over for the year. Teachers were giving study halls instead of reviewing so students were all over the place.
You had settled on watching the game because of Billy, not because of Steve. Of course, you had a crush on Steve for a very long time, but he never showed interest in you. It absolutely crushed you when he started dating Nancy and you felt awful for him when you found out Nancy had, in fact, cheated on him with Jonathan Byers. However, over the course of your friendship with Billy, your platonic feelings turned into romantic ones. You never in a million years thought he would be into you though. You were much nerdier than the girls he usually dated. You just thought he wanted a real friend. You gave him real friendship and your heart began to ache because of both him and Steve. Two hot guys that you thought were completely out of your league? Way more soul-crushing than one hot guy you thought was out of your league. You were absolutely shocked when Steve made the flirtatious comment to you that morning, completely stunned. He had never shown interest in you before and it was just confusing your feelings more. Though, you didn’t speak of this to Billy or any of your other friends. You weren’t sure what Steve’s intentions were, but you promised Billy that you would watch him play in this game, and by God, you were going to keep that promise.
It was only halftime when the coach pulled Billy out of the game. He had been acting incredibly rough toward everyone on the other team, but especially toward Steve. The coach called a time-out and told him to go cool off. He looked briefly at you before heading completely out of the gym. Before you even really thought about what you were doing, you got up and ran after him. He was still making his way down the hall when you called out to him. “Billy? Billy stop!” Your voice was like music to his ears and he froze in his place until you caught up to him.
He turned around to face you and tossed you a sour look. “What’s gotten into you?”
He scoffed. “Why do you care? Just go back to the game and watch your precious Steve.”
You were used to him sometimes getting an attitude, so you did your best not to let it phase you. Though, inside, your head started spinning. “What the fuck is that supposed to mean?”
He rolled his eyes. “You know what it means, Y/n! You never shut up about Steve and it seems like he’s interested in you now that Wheeler’s dumped him, so why don’t you go back to the gym and stop worrying about me?”
A smirk worked its way onto your face as you connected the dots. “Oh my god…”
“What? Stop smiling like that!”
“You’re fucking jealous! You’re jealous because you think I’d choose to date Steve over you, isn’t that right, Billy?” Your smirk had turned into a full-blown grin. “Can I tell you a secret, Hargrove?” You took another step toward him and gently grabbed one of his hands with yours. “Yes, I’ve had a crush on Steve, you know that. However, what you don’t know is that I have been crushing on you for a little while now and just had no idea how to fucking tell you. Steve’s behavior this morning caught me completely off guard, but I know that he doesn’t really want me, if he did, he would have never dated Nancy. I want to be with someone where I’m their first choice and they’re mine. I don’t know if I’m your first choice, Billy, but you’ve totally become mine. I thought–”
You were cut off by Billy’s hand grabbing your cheek roughly and his lips colliding with yours. You let go of his hand and threw your hands in his hair. Billy was in heaven at that moment. You absolutely tasted like heaven. He really didn’t give a shit if you still had any sort of feelings toward Steve. You said he was your first choice, and he was willing to kiss you until you felt like he was your first and only choice. He backed you up against the lockers without his lips ever leaving yours. Your hands were still deep in his hair and he was loving every second of attention that he was getting. He felt like you were finally giving him your attention, the attention he thought he deserved from the beginning. You pulled your head back slightly and Billy moved his free hand down to your waist. Your lips were puffy and your chest was heaving. You gave him a dull smile and a low chuckle escaped his throat. “Darling, you have been my first choice since the moment I met you and I am so glad that you finally admitted to yourself that you were into me more than Steve, I’ll treat you so good you’ll forget he ever existed.”
You moved your hand back to his cheek. He leaned into the motion. It made your heart swell. “You should have said something a long time ago.”
“I was watching for you, Doll.”
“Glad you lovebirds finally figured it out!”
Both your heads snapped in the direction of the voice. Back toward the gym doors, there stood Max. She had been the one that called out to you. Next to her, was a kid you both recognized as Dustin; and low and behold, Steve fucking Harrington.
They were all smiling brightly at you as if Max had not killed the moment. “Sorry about that Billy. Y/n you do look great today, in a completely friendly way, but Max and Dustin asked me to help move along your confessions.”
You laughed as Billy puffed out his cheeks in frustration. “Oh, I am absolutely going to kill all of you!”

Intervention
“A what?” You ask, blinking a few times as your mind tries to process what's going on.
 “We-”
“Let me speak,” Maxine says, interrupting Steve. “I've seen what Billy's death done to you, better than anyone.” She continues. “I'm the one to hold you at night, I'm the one to hear you sobbing, to wake up when you have nightmares and wake up screaming for your brother.” Max stands up and walks over to you, taking both your hands in hers. “You have a lot of anger, and I understand why, having lived with Neil all your life. And I understand it's all coming out the wrong way since Billy was gone, but this... This has to stop, (Y/N). I love you, but this has to stop. You're hurting yourself, and hurting us.”
“And putting yourself in danger,” Hopper adds, from his place standing near the couch. “This time you escaped... I'm not sure for how long I can keep covering for you.”
“There are five stages of grief.” Eddie finally speaks, and your eyes move to him, your heart beating faster for some reason. But you're used to it now, to the sensations Eddie provokes. It only dawns now, when you look at him in the crowd your family makes, that he lights up like a beacon. Like an anchor. And you crave to hear what he has to say. “You're stuck in anger and depression. And you have to feel them, yes, but you also have to move on.”
“How?” It comes out in a whisper, broken voice and tears rolling down. It's the first time you cry in front of them since the Battle of Starcourt.
“Start by letting it out of your chest,” Susan says.
“Yeah. You never speak to us.” Nancy adds. “We don't know what's happening.”
“Can you imagine how hard it is for me to understand?” Robins speaks up, gesturing at herself. “I joined the party too late. So I never know what to do when you freak out, go to the lake, or drive around. God knows where you go. What if you die? We wouldn't even be able to find you, and I get nervous and speak way too much, and these guys are the ones forced to bear me.”
A lot of them nod, and you just don't know what to say. Shrugging, you don't even try to resist the pull that moves you towards Eddie. He immediately stands up, arms opening to welcome you into his embrace. “It's alright. You're safe here, ok? We're your family, and we love you.” That makes you pull away, looking up at him.
And that's when he kisses you.
It's just a peck on the lips, but it makes your world stop for a moment. Your eyes are set on his as your skin burns deliciously, and for a moment there's nobody else there, just you and him... That until someone clears their throat.
“Are you done?” Hopper asks, and you collapse against his chest again.
But this time, you're not hiding. “If you guys wanna know... I'll tell you...”
They all move, giving you and Eddie enough space to sit down on the couch. Here, among them, you're safe, as Eddie said. And for the first time, you will force yourself to open up. It'll hurt, you know it, you feel it already, but you'll do this. For them, and for you.
“Billy was the one to protect me from Neil.” You begin, holding Eddie's hand, fingers laced together. “When we were kids, he took many of the beatings meant to me. Because I was his baby sister, even though I'm just seventeen minutes younger. And as we grew up-” A sob comes, you cover your mouth, closing your eyes tightly to push out some tears. “As we grew up, we started defending each other. I took some beatings meant for him too, even though he didn't like it. He wanted to take it all on himself, but I didn't let him. But many times when I was so scared, he was always there and... And now... Now he's gone and I feel like that monster can show up again at any time and I'll be all alone... And he'll beat me as he did and the only one who protected me and shared this burden is gone.”
You're a crying mess when you're done, shoulders shaking under the many sobs. Eddie holds you again, and you cry against him.
“It's true...” Max says. “But I didn't know it was like that...”
“Hey,” Steve whispers, and when you look, he's crouching in front of you. “I'm sorry Billy is gone. I always knew you guys supported each other, but this... I had no idea. But you have to know that you're not alone. You have me. And Maxine, Mike, Nancy, Robin. Dustin, Hopper, Susan, Lucas, and Erica. Even the rest of us in California.” He looks up at Eddie. “And by the looks of it, you have another protector as well.”
Sniffing, you look up at Eddie, who smiles and nods. “Hell yeah. I'd punch a thousand Jasons for you, Princess.”
That makes you blush, and you hide your face again. “So, we need a plan,” Dustin says, and you hear him messing around with some papers. “Here.” He gets up and hands you a small pile of...
“What the hell?” You speak out, sitting up straight. “How... It's...” Shaking your head, the new tears rolling down making it hard to read what it says on the plane tickets, but you got the most important part. A flight to California, to the nearest airport to Lenora Hills. “You're all going?”
They nod all at the same time. “You kids do whatever you want. I'm going to win Joyce back.” Hopper mutters and you can help but giggle.
“It's only a week, between the end of the school year and the graduation,” Nancy says. “But it'll be good. For you and all of us.”
“Guys, this is expensive... You didn't have to do that for me...”
“We managed.” Steve shrugs. “And you deserve it. All of us do, it'll be fun.”
The smile comes again, and you don't know the last time you felt... Happy. For too long, you have pushed these people away. And you shouldn't have. There are no words to thank them for not leaving, even after you were mean, almost exploding in anger. “I don't deserve it... I don't deserve any of you. And I'm sorry. I just... Didn't know what to do. Where to go, or how to feel.”
“You don't have to know,” Robin says, kneeling down in front of you next to Steve. “We'll find out, together. We fought monsters together, we can deal with a very angry girl.”
That makes you giggle, and you look around. “Thank you. All of you... For not giving up on me.” The tears that follow are from happiness... From feeling found in this sea of darkness.
“Groups hug, everyone!” Dustin calls and gets up as everyone comes closer.
You're still broken and hurt, but you'll probably feel like this forever. Billy has part of you, but now, you have to learn to live without him. And live a life he'd be proud of. Be happy, because that's what he wanted for you.
°°°
The sun is blinding, even under the beach umbrella. Steve and Robin are lying in the sun, trying to get a tan. Nancy is swimming with Maxine and Erica, and the rest of them are trying to find stuff in the sand with a small metal detector.
“You two,” You call. “Reapply sunscreen. I won't wipe moisturizer on your asses if you get all burned.”
“The sun isn't on my ass, so it'll be fine,” Robin says, and Steve chuckles.
“What are you laughing at, Harrington? You're the babysitter, you'll be the one wiping moisturizer in all our asses by the end of the day.”
 “You wish.”
“Nah, I have a boyfriend to do that for me.”
“Ouch,” Robin adds. “She just shoved your single state all over your face.”
“Not for much longer...” He mutters, and you turn your head to look at him. “Nancy and I been talking...”
“Oh.” That has been going on for a while. And one of the first things that happened when you set foot in Lenora Hills, was Jonathan and Nancy breaking up. They're fine now, but the romantic relationship is over, probably for good. “Good. Remember to send me an invitation for the wedding.”
“Speaking of you, people with hopes for the future, where's Eddie with our sodas?” Robin asks, and you sit up, looking over your shoulder.
And there he comes, chatting with Eleven, each holding one side of a styrofoam box. “Finally.” You say when they reach you. “Did you get them from the factory?”
“Yup,” Eddie says, sitting on the towel next to you. “We were squeezing the lemons.” He smirks and you pull him into a kiss.
“So.” Eleven starts, sitting in the shade with you and Eddie. “After graduation, what are your plans?”
That's something you didn't stop to think. And honestly, it's the last thing you want to think about on such a beautiful beach. “Mmm... I'm not sure. I wanna skip college. Find a nice job and just start my own life.” Shrugging, you take a deep breath. “I always wanted to work in a pet shop, ever since I was a kid. Might sound like something stupid, but I'd like it.”
“It's not stupid,” Eddie says, and El nods.
“Thing is, I don't even know where. I... I wanted to go back home, to Santa Monica... But I build a strong connection with Hawkins and, as crazy as it sounds, I learned to love it. And Lenore Hills... Would be a good restart. And I already have you, Joyce, and Jonathan here so... I really don't know.”
“There's a way to know,” Eddie says, and you look at him, eyebrows furrowed. “Might be an odd way to set our future but we could always change our minds after.”
 >>>>>>>>>>The way he says <our> future has the butterflies in your stomach flying all over. “What way?” You ask, your eyes set on him.
Eddie pulls his bag closer to him and starts looking for something inside it. “Found it.” He pulls out a red, 20-sided dice.
“I'm not even surprised,” you say with a giggle.
“We could throw it. And let's say... One to six, we stay in Hawkins.” He starts, and as odd as it sounds, it makes you smile. This is so like him, and it reminds you of everything that made you fall in love with him. “Seven to 12 is Santa Monica, and thirteen to eighteen, we come here to Lenore Hills.”
 “What about nineteen and twenty?”
“You throw again.” He simply says.
Biting your lip, you look down at the dice, taking it from his hand. “Let's get closer to the water.” Getting up, you both walk towards the ocean, holding hands. “Whatever number comes up... You'd go with me?” The questions come out with a touch of fear. What if he doesn't want to leave Hawkins, and your relationship is set on where you want to go?
“Absolutely.” He says, making you breathe out in relief. “It's you and me.” When you stop, Eddie looks down at you, a hand caressing your face softy. “I mean, unless you grow tired of a Freak in your life.”
Chuckling, you shake your head. “Nah. What would I do without your freakiness all over my life, Munson?” He smiles. “So let's do this...” You say, looking at the dice.
“Let's do this... And after our graduation, our life can finally start.”
Nodding, you tiptoe, your foreheads touching. “Alright... I'll let it fall... And our future shall be set.” You put a note of drama on the last part.
“It shall be,” Eddie repeats, and as he kisses you, long, lovingly, and passionately, you let the dice fall.
Nothing matters for that moment. Hawkins, Santa Monica, Lenora Hills... It's just you and Eddie, and the kiss that you want to taste for the rest of your days. When you pull away to breathe, a smile on both your lips, you take a deep breath before looking down at the dice.
Gasping, you can't help but smile. “Well, we won't have to throw again.” He says, and you nod.
 “Our forever starts now.”

Another Hidden Omega Billy AU! because I just had to.
Imagine Billy plastered after the Halloween Party and he goes to find Steve after the whole plenty of bitches in the sea thing and he immediately clings to Steve and asks Steve why he doesn’t like Billy.
“Steevvviiiiieee, why don’t you like meeeee?” Billy slurred, practically falling on the bench beside him and wrapping his arm around Steve’s shoulder.
Steve stared at him, unwilling to believe the sight he was seeing.
“Hargrove, you’re wasted.”
“Noooo, I’m just tiiipppsssyyyy! You’re the one that’s wasteded.” Billy declared.
Steve rolled his eyes.
“Right. I’m definitely the one who’s slurring my words.”
“You says it, not me. Anyway, why don’t you like meeee? I want yoooouuuuu to like meeeeeeeee!” He said, pointing to Steve before pointing to himself at the right moments.
Steve chose to indulge him.
“I like you just fine when you’re not being an asshole, Hargrove.”
“But how am I supposed to get your attention?” He whined.
Steve couldn’t understand what Billy was trying to say.
“What?”
“How should I get your attention then, pretty boy?”
Steve honestly didn’t know if he should take Billy seriously at this point. The teen must’ve been drunk off his ass to be saying bullshit like this and a small part of Steve wanted to mess with Billy knowing he’d most likely forget everything with how much alcohol he’d ingested.
“Help me take care of my pups, then.”
Billy looked gobsmacked and Steve had to hold in his laughter at how weirdly adorable the blond looked when he was shocked and wasted.
“Huh?”
“I recently took in some pups as pack. They could use more guidance, you know.”
“And you’ll like me if I do it?” Billy asked, seemingly earnest with his ocean blue eyes wide.
Steve snorted.
“Sure, why not?”
“You’ve got yourself a deal!” Billy declared, raising his finger to the sky before swaying and ultimately, landing his head onto Steve’s shoulder and passing out.
Billy wakes up surrounded by Steve’s scent in a guest bedroom wearing the same clothes as the night before, with a headache to kill all headaches. He spotted a Tylenol and a glass of water on the bedside table and he immediately takes it as he’s flooded by the memories of last night’s shenanigans. He’s thankful that he wasn’t stupid enough to reveal his designation but fuck, the things he’s revealed were even more embarrassing than that. What had gotten over him that he’d confronted Steve Harrington about not liking him?
He slowly and gingerly made his way downstairs where he saw Steve dancing along to the music on the radio while wearing a kiss the chef apron. Billy mumbled don’t mind if I do while going down since he knew Steve was too busy to notice him. He decided to do Steve a favor and let him know he was there when Steve was done using the stove since that could end badly.
“Good morning, pretty boy.”
“Jesus, fuck, Hargrove. Make some noise next time. You’ll give me a heart attack if you keep that up.”
“That’s the last thing I’d want to do, sweetheart. After all, you’re the only one who can keep up with me on and off the court in this shitty little town.”
Steve was not impressed.
“Uh huh. Did you take the Tylenol?”
“Yep. Thanks for that by the way. Did I do anything too bad last night?”
Billy wanted to see if Steve would tell him the truth or not.
“Nothing too bad, just draped yourself all over me asking why I didn’t like you.” Steve said, grinning like the cat that got the cream.
Billy didn’t let that faze him.
“Oh, pretty boy, I would have asked that question sober if I knew you’d answer me honestly.”
Steve snorted and Billy, strangely enough, found that weirdly adorable.
“If you say so, Hargrove. Sit and have some breakfast before I drop you off at Tina’s place to get your car.”
“Aw, a classic American breakfast and a ride? Oh, sweetheart, you really shouldn’t have!” Billy cried out, holding his hands to his chest.
“Laugh it up, Hargrove. Just because my parents raised me to take care of a guest properly doesn’t mean I won’t throw you out if you get too crazy.”
“Don’t worry, pretty boy. I’ll be on my best behavior when your parents come down.”
“It’s just us, Hargrove. My parents are in Italy for some business deal and we’re the only ones here.”
That was odd. Billy knew that Steve was an only child so it didn’t make any sense to him as to why Steve’s parents could leave for so far away without taking their pup. That’s the entire reason why he was even in this hellhole called Hawkins. Hell, Neil was an asshole who beat him up on a regular basis, but he was the first to beat up anyone who called his son a faggot. Granted, he’d beat up Billy after for even seeming like a faggot in public but the thought still counted.
 “How long are they out?”
“Don’t think about it. My days of hosting parties here are long gone.”
“I wasn’t thinking about parties, pretty boy even though I’ll admit that crossed my mind for a second or two. I was asking because it isn’t healthy for pack bonds to be stretched like that.”
Steve shrugged.
“It’s not that bad when you’re used to it and they’ve been going for trips like this for as long as I can remember. Anyway, the other members of my pack make it easier to deal with.”
“Like the pups?”
Billy watched as Steve’s face lit up as he told Billy all about his pups that he’d recently taken under his wing. It didn’t really make any sense to him how they’d gravitated towards him and vice versa but he found himself forming pack bonds with them pretty quickly and that was that.
Billy spent the rest of the morning there eating breakfast with Steve, listening to him talk about his pups as if they hung the stars up in the heavens and Billy soaked every minute of it up. Here he was, in the kitchen of the alpha he’s liked since he saw him, eating the breakfast the very same alpha prepared for him. It was a surreal experience and reality soon came crashing down after in the form of a drive to pick up his car and the beating that accompanied his late return.
When he came back to school, Billy’s ribs were tender and he wasn’t allowed to buy lunch for the rest of the week. Somehow, someway, Steve noticed Billy wasn’t in the cafeteria during their shared lunch period and when he found him chain-smoking in his car to stave off the hunger, his alpha instincts practically forced him to go over there and to offer up his second sandwich that Billy reluctantly accepted.
This started up a habit of Steve and Billy eating in or by either of their cars and actually talking to each other. Steve doesn’t really know why but he really likes taking care of Billy and he doesn’t stop since it calms his alpha instincts. Billy stopped practically boxing Steve in at every basketball practice and Steve found himself actually becoming friends with the younger boy.
Cue the unlucky moment that Billy’s long scheduled heat was about to hit and he was forced to go out and look for his pup step-sister who sneaked out. He finds Max with another pup trapped on the bus while a bunch of weird dogs circled it. Billy went feral, running a few over before grabbing the crowbar he always kept by the driver’s door and going to town on the dogs. He only stopped when the dogs ran away and he had gotten on board, only to find Steve with the other pup and Max.
At this point, Billy’s instincts were driving him crazy, leading to him grabbing Max and aggressively scenting her after removing his scent blockers which led to Steve figuring out that Billy was an omega and that he was on the cusp of heat. He convinces Billy to bring Max with him to a safe place since the dogs were still roaming around. Steve promises to protect the omega and his pup which Billy happily agrees to.
They manage to get through the rest of the night with no issue with Billy helping them with burning down the main hub after being tricked by the pups to do it since they wouldn’t be safe until they did it. When Max talks of going home, Billy whines which automatically puts Steve on edge.
He goes to the adults with his suspicions and they agree that it’s odd but they have to bring him home but Jim will stay and watch for a bit to calm Steve’s instincts down. Instead, Jim goes full feral alpha when he sees Neil move to strike Billy down and he rescues Billy from the house and after asking him where he wanted to go, he was brought to Steve’s place.
Steve struggles to control himself with the omega in heat staying in his guest room but somehow, he does control himself enough to last through it all. Once Billy’s out of heat and more coherent, Steve and Billy have a talk about everything and Steve asks him if he meant it when he said he wanted Steve to like him, which makes Billy bashful when he quietly says yes. Steve asks if he could court Billy and Billy agrees.
He's taken in by Hopper after his heat and he grows especially close with El who also becomes really close with Max. Joyce acts more like his mom than Susan and his real mom ever did even if she and Hopper had yet to start dating and when Hopper and Joyce find out about Steve courting Billy, Steve gets the shovel talk of a lifetime.
Billy ends up becoming really close to Will too since he bonds with his fellow gay William and when Hopper and Joyce eventually get together and get married, Billy’s more than happy to gain a couple of brothers to add to his two sisters.
Soon enough, Billy has the same pack members as Steve, and he finds the family he never thought he’d find in the town that he’d wanted to run away from. He finds happiness in the most unlikely of places and for once, he’s thankful that a series of unfortunate events led to the best possible outcome he could never imagine.

had this idea and i ran to tumblr to share it with you all. maybe this has been done before? but i still wanted to share it.
imagine an au where everything is sort of the same except: steve doesn’t have any friends. (wait, just hear me out) so when billy moves to hawkins, he sees everyone giving steve a wide berth for some reason. he tries to talk to steve one day after school and steve’s dad, who is Present but still Not Very Good in this au, sees it when he goes to pick up steve from school and approaches billy one day.
“i will pay you to befriend my son.” is all he says and billy, who needs money to help support his family, easily accepts. he gets a weekly check just for hanging out with steve and being there for him, but he notices that the more time he spends with him, the more he opens up and just beams at the mere sight of billy and his grades in school start getting better because billy’s there to tutor him and read him the things he doesn’t understand because, nobody knew or cared to know, but steve was dyslexic which is why his grades were so bad no matter how hard he tried.
but then one day they’re hanging out in steve’s room, and he just turns to look at billy and says “i’m so glad you’re my friend.” and billy’s heart drops to the pit of his stomach because steve doesn’t know and james harrington had told him that steve was well aware that billy was being paid. it instantly makes him feel like shit.
at this point, both neil and susan have gotten promoted at their jobs so they’re bringing in more money which means that billy can stop being paid. when he tries to approach james harrington another day to ask him to please stop because he’ll willingly be steve’s friend (at this point he’s falling for steve and just doesn’t know it) and doesn’t need the money anymore, steve overhears and he and billy get into a huge fight.
steve is obviously hurt and billy is desperately trying to explain that, despite the money, what he had with steve was genuine and real but steve doesn’t believe him and asks him to leave.
after that it’s just steve avoiding billy and billy trying to get steve to talk to him again to no avail. then one day billy manages to corner steve after gym class and they get into another huge fight where steve confesses that the reason why he was so hurt is because he had fallen for billy and billy has this “oh shit” moment where he feels bad and then realizes that he loves steve as well, so he begs him to give him a chance and steve does! in one condition: that they take it slow and build up to what they had before because he can’t forgive billy so fast.
so steve and billy become friends again and spend every day together with billy trying his best to convince steve that he’s being genuine and real and he wants to stay, and then one day when they’re watching a movie together at steve’s place, steve just tells him “i forgive you.” and billy goes “can i kiss you, pretty boy?” and steve agrees and so they kiss. and start dating. the end?
