Ohhhh I have put this off for so long because naming favourite artists feels like such a big responsibility!! But I will name some I've been especially fond of lately, at the very least! Here's a selection of just twenty amazing artists/creators that I've been admiring in just the last few weeks:

And the thing is, is I could also easily draw up whole paragraphs of why I love each of these artists, but then I get very worried that I am going to make it look like I love some artists more than others, and then I get very stressed so I'm not going to do that, at least not this time around.

Also please know that I could easily name another thirty that I love at least. There are so many great artists in this fandom and my terrible short term memory gave me these names first! But my fanart, edit, manip, and fan comic tags are full of them! Also twitter is very very scary but my twitter is almost exclusively retweeted fanart. ALSO also everyone in my following tab on my instagram are or have been at some point 1D fanartists!

"gifs = art" could you please elaborate on that besides the skill that goes into it?

🫥 i have no idea why people are looking to me to explain something that has been repeated by many gifmakers and content creators for *years* and should be common sense anyways but...

beyond the skill that goes into gifmaking (the time it takes, the practice required, etc.) the different colorings, typography, blending and other proccesses that some gifmakers use in their creations absolutely can and should be considered an artform. look no further than the gorgeous gifsets some of my very talented mutuals have made:

@yenvengerberg becca's colorful sets are art as far as i'm concerned! like just look at this. she transforms the media she gifs and makes it look completely unreal in terms of sheer beauty and creativity.

@sith-maul one of the best creators on this site. nik is just so so talented. everything she creates is so stunning; you can't look at a set like this, for example, and tell me that it isn't art.

@hoe-biwan again, everything that flo posts is beyond incredible. i don't even watch star wars and i still silently nod my head and gape in awe when one of her sw sets is on my dash. just scroll through the comic book-inspired sets flo's made!!! that's art <3

@buffysummers ok alexandra is such a talented creator and a HUGE inspiration for me when i started giffing years ago. her eye for coloring and scene picking is out of this world! this is a recent set of hers that i particularly adore.

these are just a few examples, but if you scroll through my own blog or the various edit tags for fandoms, you would see more of what i'm talking about. there are so many talented gifmakers and editors on this site who take time out of their busy lives to create for us, and it breaks my heart when their work is discredited or disregarded or underappreciated. for their work to be invalidated and not considered art when it very much is? not only is it rude, it further demotivates creators from contributing to the site and makes them feel like nothing they create is good enough - believe me, i know that feeling all too well.

i've made extremely detailed and color-specific sets before like these, and it took me 3-4 WEEKS. EACH. i'm not exaggerating in the slightest. and since posting them, they've already been reposted here on tumblr and on other sites like pinterest, twitter, instagram, etc. if you even have like a shred of empathy you can understand why that would anger and upset me.

i don't know why people assume that gifmakers copy and paste the same 5 settings on their gifs, export them, and call it a day - it's not that simple at all. so much more goes into making gifs, and the majority of people on this site continue to laugh in our faces, steal the edits we spent so much time and energy on, belittle our work and claim that it isn't art (and friendly reminder! we do this free of charge and ask for nothing in return beyond clicking the reblog button, and so many of you can't even do that much). i shouldn't have to sit here and validate any of that - the creations should speak for themselves. you consider fanvids, fanart and graphics "art" - so why not gifs, which make up the majority of the edits on this site and, in theory, help foster/sustain discussion and fandom?

reposters all run up and down claiming that gifmaking "isn't that difficult" with zero experience... yet if they tried it themselves, they would know that's so far from the truth. and they DO know that deep down, or they wouldn't steal our gifs from us in the first place if gifs were that easy to make 💀

YES absolutely!! I'm always ECSTATIC to receive any sort of fanart! :D I guess the only rule / plead I'd have for it is to please keep it safe for work! OH and if I didn't react to fanart you posted, then 100% of the time it's because I simply didn't see it :'D Feel free to DM me if you posted something, I always like, comment on and reblog fanart people make for me!

Aegislash, Lumineon and Pom Pom Oricorio! Leafeon and Latias too, but I put Lumineon and Oricorio higher on the list as I have a soft spot for underappreciated Pokemon.

Social Media Refugee

I have oft held a sneering contempt for social media. Not that I have much to judge on the subject being an early millenial who spent the first half of their life without the ‘pleasure’ of Facebook, Twitter and their ilk. My first foray into the world of social media was a brief stint on ‘Friends Reunited’ where I quickly realised that I hated other people (or rather, I hadn’t found the poor souls that would accept me). My second foray was a small forum that centred around a Newgrounds game based on a small creature within World of Warcraft. I still miss that community.

From there, I followed the story of most millenials. Joined Facebook to find it would be filled with racists and scammers. Joined Twitter to find it would be filled with right-wing bots and exaggerators. Joined Instagram to find that I was not someone who should be on the picture side of a lens and that I didn’t eat in enough interesting places. Eventually, I found Reddit and it appealed to the good old days of internet forums, anonymity and sheer randomness. It was an eclectic mix of people and opinions and there were designated spaces for those who wanted to burn the world and those who just wanted to bring a bit of socialism back into politics. And, of course, AITA that accepted EVERYONE.

More importantly, it was my first view into Tumblr. The weird, amazing, chaotic space filled with these weird, artistic, talented, funny, creative users to which my favourite author was also a noted and celebrated persona.

When the massive cock-tractor that is u/spez decided to monetise it, I saw the beginning of the end. When the deadline for 3rd-party apps passed, the same apps that the heavily underappreciated and overworked mods of reddit (especially dndmemes) used to contain most of the deadweight of the internet community from interfering with the functionality and quality of the site itself, were no longer supported; I was bombarded with bots ‘following’ me. Quick note: I’m not that interesting. My highest karma content was a satire piece slating the Houses of Parliament in a UK subreddit. Everything else was either fluff or self-deprecation. TLDR: They were all bloody bots. The adverts got worse. Dndmemes turned from a place of shitty rules-lawyer Jesse memes to a site dedicated to goblin porn (glorious) back to a weird mix of both without any real governance other than the bot they’d put into place. Most subreddits stayed dead becuase who would want to work in a hostile workplace where you weren’t even being paid?? And so I’ve come to Tumblr where I have to learn how to social network all over again. The adverts are just as annoying as reddit but apparently I can buy crabs? I’m cheap though so I’ll save that till I’m more used to here and feeling flush. My point being: throughout all these sites, I’ve tried my best to be creative and funny and, most importantly, supportive; as that’s the kind of human I’d like to be. Instead I feel an overwhelming rage to the injustices of our race which can only be quelled by allowing my artistic side to flourish - so if anyone can give me any pointers on drawing programmes/apps (so I can finally create my comic/manga series), writing tips, or learning SQL/Javascript/Pythin etc, then let me have them.

As long as they’re free as I am, as aforementioned, cheap. Will also happily accept memes.

It looks like we have our first Gotham Knights cast!! And they're my favourite underrated and underappreciated members of the Batman mythos and Batfamily.

The article states that Harper will in fact be bisexual in the show, and that Cullen is transgender (as is the actor). Hopefully they let Cullen also be gay as he is in the comics, I want him to be gay and trans so bad.

Normally I would say take this with a grain of salt but Tyler DiChiara has confirmed it on his Instagram (I assume so has Fallon Smythe but I only follow Tyler).

I know people are afraid of how the CW will handle the Batfam because of their general history with DC shows, but I'm willing to have faith. And these initial casting choices are strong.

I know I have been awake for almost 24 hours, and we're again having almost +30C temperatures here and all this is affecting my mood and everything, but holy shit that I feel just so shit.

Mainly about myself and the things I create. Because I really like it how far I have come and I love doing what I do, but I just feel so lonely when I feel that none of that is enough. I always draw or write or edit the wrong things. No one cares about my fanfictions because I write fluff instead of smut (I hate smut, can't even read it anymore, it's so gross). My humour is not funny but rather weird. My comics are stupid. My photorealism drawings are not perfect enough. My videos have either too narrow topics, or just plain stupid and weird humour. Like, I'm proud of my comics, the ideas in those and in my videos make me laugh. With other art projects and also with video editing and gif making I'm constantly learning new tricks and I really love the feeling of making progress.

It's just extremely tiring when others don't see that because social media has created that standard everyone has to fit in in order to be taken seriously or noticed. And you get compared to other "content creators" even if people don't notice doing that. For example, I put so much time and effort in my videos, but I guess they are not interesting enough because they are not 10 seconds long screen-recorded clips from interviews posted on Instagram, nor are they edited with some professional level methods to look like something from a movie. I am still learning and honestly, I never want to be perfect in anything anymore. Reaching the top level means no challenges = boring af.

And don't even get me started about original content. Everything above is about FANART OR FANFICTION. If I post my original art, that gets ignored almost without an exception.

I just feel like I'm doing everything wrong despite me doing what people always are told: be yourself and do what you love. I am! But why do I still feel so lonely and invisible and extremely underappreciated and like I should change when I don't want to?

I went to Dutch Comic Con once again. On Saturday I went as Ladybug from Miraculous Ladybug, but as I spotted an Angewomon who told me she’d be there the next day too, I went as Mimi from Digimon on Sunday.

Besides, the whole point of not having blue hair anymore was so that I can wear both cosplay whenever I want.

Day one!

Downside of this year is that I did not have my annual friend with me - I always visit Dutch Comic Con (March edition) with one friend in particular. This meant that Saturday I was by myself. The plus side was that I could do everything at my pace(!), but the problem with being by myself was everything else. I took only one photo with another cosplay and that was when a friend of mine tagged along for a little while.

It’s me with a bunch of androids from Detroit: Become Human, heh. I was holding my bag and everything, so it was awkward too!

I saw many more androids who looked amazing, but I lost my friend and therefore could not take any other photos. There was one Connor & Hank in particular that I was very fond of, and I made sure Hank knew how much I appreciated the dedication to the beard they applied to their face. I was really amazed by it as beards are hard to achieve.

I also saw an amazing Sylvanas (World of Warcraft) cosplay, when I saw her I actually said “wow” (or more specifically “wauw”) out loud and I told her she looked good or something like that. She really did. On Sunday I also saw a blood elf character, but I am not familiar with all NPC’s, so...

As I said before, I also saw Angewomon and I really wanted to take a photo with her. She seemed in a rush though, told her I will go as Mimi tomorrow as she said she’ll be there tomorrow again and therefore left it as it is.

I also visited two Q&As that day. Felt nice to visit Q&As without having to make friends wander alone.

The first one right at 12:00 was Katherine McNamara, she is known as the main character Clary from Shadowhunters, a show that is a bit of a guilty pleasure. I loved her excitement and her love for the franchise and other characters, and she had to keep herself from telling any spoilers, but she is really excited for the first upcoming episode.

The second Q&A at 16:00 was Jennifer Morrison, known as the main character Emma Swan from Once Upon A Time. I know she has a role in Arrow too, but I don’t watch it. Because of Katherine’s excitement during her Q&A, Jennifer really made a huge contrast in that regard. Not that she wasn’t happy, it was just different. I slightly feel bad about all the Once-related questions because you could kinda tell she’s done, and she deflected a Swan Queen question by just answering she is an actress portraying a character who is written the way they are, so I liked that; no fuss about shipping. Shipping is what made the Once fandom so destructive, after all. She solved it very well, probably put a lot of thought into it.

Other than that I bought a bunch of merchandise. I actually only bought stuff from the artist alley; none of the official merch pulled me in. The artist alley is great, because it has such a variety in fandoms. My only issue is that I am limited to buttons, stickers and charms, because I would not know what to do with prints.

Two random animal stickers of a cat and a bat because the artist was kind and it looked cool. The bottom two are magnets from the video game Journey, and few of my friends know I’ve been very involved with a Journey community lately.

Three buttons of Connor from Detroit: Become Human. I am actually really sad that no one sold Kara or Markus because I love all three main characters nearly equally. Some did sell Hank and Sumo, but yeah... would’ve loved some Kara and Markus. That is why I was glad I saw some Kara cosplay around, compared to Connor the other two appear so underappreciated when they are all such lovely characters. I love Connor most too, but the difference for me is rather minor.

And a bunch of stickers! Illidan Stormrage from World of Warcraft (he looks so adorable and the vendor was so nice), Spider-man in his homemade suit, and a sticker set from Miraculous Ladybug.

I kinda wish I did not have to say that this sums up Saturday already, but here we are.

I found a couple of artists I want to commission from, but many are way above my budget. Complicated. I also took 1,5 hours to hunt Pokemon in Pokemon GO because there was a special day going on and inside the building the GPS was crazy, but because I could visit at my own pace, I made sure I saw all the shops already. I get really nasty about not having seen everything, my brains just can’t comprehend the idea of not seeing everything (or at least having tried).

Either way!

Day two!

On Sunday my bestie tagged along, but ironically now I didn’t really find any cosplay I wanted to take a photo with, hah. The entire day we visited I tried to find Angewomon, and by the time we were close to leaving (last hour at the con), we found her in line for food!!!

I found her Instagram so you can see her with her wings on, but yeah, she didn’t have them today (heavy). It’s the same as how I did not bring Palmon. We weren’t allowed any bags bigger than 12 x 18 cm OR they had to be transparent, so I had nothing to carry Palmon in (it’s for safety reasons due to recent shooting in the same city). Either way, I was so happy to have found her! We shared the mutual feeling of never seeing other Digimon cosplay, so we were both just really happy. Another stranger saw us together and wanted to take a photo as he’d never expect to see two Digimon cosplay together, and guess what, neither did we!

So she was easily the highlight of my day, haha! I saw she also did Garurumon on her page, which is really cool too!

I do want to say that I was pleasantly surprised with seeing The Umbrella Academy cosplay around as well by the way, even if it was 90% Klaus and 10% Five. Considering the show being new I thought it was amazing and for some reason it never occurred to me I could see cosplay from that show until I saw them. The Five cosplayers that were around were actually rather young-looking and short, so that was fantastic, and the Five who was together with towel-Klaus were very in-character together as Klaus was teasing them and Five wasn’t having it. I loved it.

Because I did not find any new merch I wanted to get, I ended up buying mysterious Japanese snacks. I meant to buy one box of panda cookies and one box of regular cookies, but the vendor talked me into this.

The cookies were alright, not too amazing, but I loved the panda cookies too much to even share sorry bestie. All of these are gone already, by the way. I uh... liked my pricey Japanese mystery food. Much better than mochi (yikes) or pocky (meh), but those are opinions!

I think that sums it up. I hope I get the photo Angewomon took of us on her phone, because that was a selfie.

It was a successful weekend regardless.

It’s been six and a half months since we broke up, and I know there’s no linear or correct way to go through the process of moving on. But yesterday was different. I take it you thought that we were sitting down so you could tell me about the new person you’re dating and that our situationship should go back to a friendship. What started as a conversation about where you’re at became a space for me to finally tell you all of the things that had been subconsciously gnawing at me.

You said that after I mentioned that it wasn’t the real reason last time we saw each other, you realised you had been ignoring the deeper thoughts: what it comes down to is that you were scared.

1, scared because I always seemed sure of our relationship and it made you feel like there must be something wrong since you didn’t feel as certain.

and 2, scared because you thought I loved you more than you loved me.

It’s almost... comical... that you sat across a high-top table from me and said those words. Interestingly enough though, it gave me an opening.

I told you that it hadn’t been all peaches and daisies for me while we were together. There were a lot of really good moments, but underpinning all of that was my disappointment/sadness about feeling undervalued and underappreciated. the amount of time that I spent making sure you were comfortable, you were happy, you had what you needed... at the expense of losing myself in you. and all of that wasn’t because one of us loved the other more. it was because I actually tried. Really hard. But to be with someone who was blind to how their actions affect the one person you’re supposed to be a teammate to. That, was rough.

You weren't ready or willing to accommodate someone in your life. It was always the J Show and you came first. Every time.

Telling my parents about you much sooner than I was comfortable with- I did that to make you happy. Getting you gifts because I knew and understood your love language- I did that to make you happy. Because making you happy made me happy. So, don’t tell me it’s because I loved you more. It’s because I actually cared about investing time and energy into the relationship and holding up my side of the deal to be your partner. And I wasn’t ever sure that if it came down to it, you would pick me. Pick us. Make the tough call when you’re put in a difficult spot.

At the end of the day, you were looking for an out. Whether it was your clearance or something else, you constantly sought a reason to believe it wouldn't work out. You self sabotage.

You looked saddened, maybe surprised, at what I said. That I had raised issues that you thought you had made a lot of progress on internally. Clearly not. There’s work to be done. I recommended you spend some time alone for a while... sort out who it is you want to be and what you actually seek from a relationship with someone. So. date the girl, don’t date the girl, date someone else. Whatever. But don’t think it’s only an external problem. It takes two.

So I went dancing. Archived our photos on my Instagram. And deleted our text history (again). Not because I'm erasing you from my life, but because it's time to turn the page.

And now I feel... lighter? More at peace, in some ways. I’m sure it’ll continue to come in waves. But this feels good.

“What is Love” by TWICE

Let me preface this by saying that I don’t listen to many girl groups. I did listen to some of TWICE’s stuff and some of BLACKPINK’s stuff when the two groups first debuted, but ultimately the only girl group song on my playlist is GFriend’s “Navillera” because i just love that song.

Typically I only like songs I can sing along to in the car, and TWICE’s songs were all too difficult so I slowly stopped listening. However, I’ve decided to pull in a girl group song because odds are those who see this blog will get sick of me only talking about boy groups.

Overall Sound

As I’d expect of a TWICE song, it immediately has this cute sound to it. They sound like something I’d plug into the opening of a shoujo anime opening (as compared to Dreamcatcher, which has songs which sound more suited for the action-filled opening of a shounen anime). The vocals were nice and the song seemed to flow nicely from regular verses into the chorus, which is what I’d want for a cute song like the others from TWICE. I really love how the song’s rap managed to keep the mood of the song rather than sounding more tough. The music helps a lot with that, but credit must also be given to the group’‘s rappers.

MV

The MV left me with high hopes before I’d heard the song or seen the MV simply because Twitter and Instagram were covered in posts about the references to other movies.

I don’t know every movie featured, but I was able to identify some of the ones seen. I think it’s great that the MV does feature movies like “Ghost” and “Lala Land.” There are movies which are recent featured and older ones featured, which I liked since I have a lot of varied movie tastes.

The best part of the MV wasn’t the involvement of movie references, though. It was the use of the girls as all of the characters. This includes having the group’s members play the roles of the guys, too. It made it cute but also comical in spots and kept a lighthearted feeling.

Overall, the MV works well with the lyrics since many girls take movies as their idea of what romance should be. That’s why many people praise movies which don’t put emphasis on relationships or the need to have a prince charming. Even for me, who grew up homeschooled for most of my life, I found that most of my idea of what I’d like for a relationship came from movies I watched (pottery scene from “Ghost” anyone? As long as my datemate doesn’t die right after, that is!). I fell in love with simple, cute romance rather than the sexual bits and expensive dinners. But even now i don’t quite understand what is love and sometimes wonder if I’m mistaking platonic feelings for romantic ones.

Lyrics Meaning

The lyrics are pretty straight-forward with this song. It’s a song about wanting to experience love and hoping it comes to you. I love how it takes up mention that girls may often turn to fiction to get the feeling of love. Most people associate the movie taste of women as being romantic movies and romcoms and anything other than action (disclaimer: some women like action movies, some like horror, some like all of the above. each person is different in their tastes). There isn’t much to dive into with the lyrics, but I think they do well of conveying the feelings many girls may feel (and even those who aren’t female may feel) when it comes to falling love.

Choreography

It’s really hard to actually see the choreography at this point because the MV has been out for one day, but I did my best with what I had. Girl group dances always look fun to me, like they’d be fun to learn even though I never will manage that.

From what I could see in the MV (AKA just the chorus part), the chorus of the song does use unison. There’s not much acting out on the part of the members nor anything to draw attention towards any one member. I looked at the dance practice for “TT” and the dance practice for “Likey” and both songs use unison a lot. So, I’d assume the choreography I’ve seen for “What is Love?” is right in line with what you’d expect for TWICE. Which can be really good, don’t get me wrong. I think it suits them well since there are so many members. Individualistic choreography could become overwhelming if every song has moves like that. I will note that “Likey” does have a moment where one member dances alone, but the others soon join to essentially repeat what she’d just done.

I’d listen to this song if I was…

I get in these moods where I just randomly crave love songs and want to daydream about my bias acknowledging my existence. I like to daydream alternate universes where they’d have a reason to even speak to me. This is a song I think would fit those moods well. It’s basically my daydreams.

(disclaimer: i will likely never meet my biases and i am trying to be at piece with that. it’s not easy.)
