IBA - INSPIRED BY ART
(HANZO X FEM!YOU)
I Care About Him
(IBA from: @azu21 - Thank you darling for the idea, I hope you like it! ~)
Summary:You're a new agent of overwatch, it has been good five months since you arrived, picked by finger by the only ones Jack Morrison and Vivian Soujourn. With the time, you notice a man that is always walking with Genji, but far away from him... He was lonely and quite. It bothers you, you knew something.
(artist: couldn't find it, sorry :-:)
Tumblr media
*Ana Amari is sitting in her desk in her room, reading some old papers about the null sector and Talon, she heard a knock, without taking her attention, she said... *
Ana- Come in...
You *slowly open* Ana...? Are you busy?
Ana- *Look at you and smile* Hi, darling, how are you? Come! Tak a sit, I'm just reading some old files.
You - Okay... *go to her desk sitting in front of her* I want to ask you about this man... The one who always walk with Genji.
Ana- Hanzo? *chuckles* Why you don't talk to him?
You- I want to, you know that I want to know everyone better in overwatch...
Ana- But?
You- He seems... Not really social...?
Ana- *sighs* He pass through hard times. He's a gentle man, smart and talented, but... Is very hard for him to get together with the rest.
You - Is that because of something?
Ana- You know why Genji is half robot?
You- No...
Ana- Hanzo was forced to do that with him, manipulated. They're brothers, y/n.
You- Wha...?! *suprised* He...! He did that with his own brother?!
Ana- Forced to. Genji forgive him, but Hanzo still needs to forgive himself. Imagine, have to grown up only obeying, no mother and no childhood, only to be the next Shimada's leader, have your own father murdered and later, be forced to kill your own brother. Genji told us his story, we embrace Hanzo here to he understand that he can be forgive.
You- Oh... That's why he is always with Genji.
Ana- He is a broken man, y/n, we can't imagine his pain and still lives on the past. You should try to talk to him.
You- Something about him makes me care about... I... Feel something so sad about him.
Ana- *chuckles* You really have the gift, don't you?
*Later in the corridor, you were walking to find Jack about the new mission that would be in a few weeks. You spot Hanzo coming in your direction in small steps while reading something in a digital tablet, he pass by you and you turn around*
You- Hi, Hanzo!
Hanzo- Hm? *He turned surprised* Oh, hello... Can I help you?
You- Just want to ask how are you doing *smirk*
Hanzo- I'm good... Thank you *he seems a little confused* You... Are the new agent, right?
You- Yeah, it's me. By the way, have you seen Jack somewhere? I can't find him, i need to ask something about the mission.
Hanzo- I can try to help you...
You- He didn't told me with who I'm going to be with, my duo.
Hanzo- Ah... It's actually me.
You- What? Really? *chuckles* Lucky me! ~ thanks! See you later! *you turn around walking away*
Hanzo- Lucky...? *smirk*
Genji- Brother! *appears at the corridor walking in his direction* Do you know you're duo?
Hanzo- Yes, I just talk to her, actually.
Genji- Heeer... ~ Hmmm hehehe! *Give him a slap on his arm* I know who is it!
Hanzo- *smile* You check the files again, don't you?
Genji- No, Ana told me earlier. Didn't need to. So! Y/n, right?
Hanzo- Yes.
Genji- You lucky bastard! *laughs* She's the nicest.
Hanzo- She looks to young...
Genji- What?
Hanzo- I don't know if I can get along with such a young girl.
Genji- Young... How young you think she's?
Hanzo- Like... 17?
Genji- *laughs* She have my age!
Hanzo- What?! She looks so... 16 or 17.
Genji- Don't be nervous in stay around her, she's nice, smart, mature... Pretty and sexy...
Hanzo- *sighs*... Genji, I'm not going to date anyone. Or fall in love.
Genji- You suck.
*At the reunion room*
Jack- *walking in front of a huge screen* Everybody read the file, I believe. We detect a signal not far away, from Null Sector, is coming from the north, we believe that they may having a hidden base somewhere, we'll let 5 duos in the territory to find where this signal is coming from. The rest of us will be in touch far and near...
Soujourn - Is not the first time that we detect this signal from the north... We need to act now and figure it out.
Cass- Captain, today I have a mission with the Shimada's bros here in five hours, is there any update?
Soujourn- It will be sent it to your system's in a few minutes.
Hanzo- It has being sent it... *reading the file on the tablet*
Soujourn- Well... I would like to send y/n together for her abilities to this mission, but we need you for this one Cassidy.
Cass- No problem, ma'am *smirk* So the Hashimotos are making a mess in Kanezaka again.
Genji- Kiriko and tracer is there has being two weeks, we need to act.
Hanzo- The updates are not good... Captain, by any chance, can we go earlier?
Soujourn- Yes, any time. The ship is ready.
*outside the room, after the reunion, you walk to Hanzo talking to Cassidy about the mission. Cassidy notice you coming and finish his conversation with Hanzo walking away*
You- Hey, partner.
Hanzo- *he turns and smirk* Hello.
You- I came to wish you lucky *Give him little taps on his arm* I'll be waiting for you! Hope we can get along easily ~
Hanzo- Yes, me too *smiles and hear someone calling* Oh, I have to go! It was great to meet you! *he walk fast going to the ship*
You- *take deep breath* Why I'm so worry?
Ana- You two make a great duo~
You- *little jumpscare* Jesus, Ana...great duo? Really? *smile*
Ana- Yes, I mean in many ways... Romantically...
You- *blush* Ana! I barely know this man!
Ana- I know what I'm saying *chuckles* I know you both very well~ *walk away laughing*
*in the ship*
Hanzo- *looking at the updates again*...
Cass- Hey, partner... *Look at him reading* You're a really systematic with missions, aren't ya?
Hanzo- I'm worry about Kiriko and her mother... I hope both are safe.
Cass- Doesn't she hates you?
Hanzo- *Look at him* Who? Kiriko? *sighs* Yes, but... I don't hate her, she's my sister.
Cass- He got some big family issues... *whispers* Well! I've heard from a sparrow that you're in a duo with my sweet pumpkin y/n.
Hanzo- Sweet... Pumpkin? You're dating her?
Cass- Nope, but I wish! *laughs* You're lucky.
Hanzo- *laughs* Is she that amazing?
Cass- The sparrow said that you'll not fall in love, never. She'll make you change your mind. She's cute, sexy, funny, everything good in one woman. Do you have any type of woman, archer?
Hanzo- *chuckles feeling shy* N-no, I do not... I... I'm focusing on the mission, actually.
Cass- No type of woman? *chuckles* Come on, big man! You're handsome and smart! Women loooves that! You should try to live again this type of things.
Genji- PS; He's a virgin.
Jack- *holding laugh* Oh fuck...!
Hanzo- *take a deep breath closing his eyes* So... This is the sparrow.
Cass- *Still looking at him* How the fuck is this man virgin?! *Look at Genji* I though he had a lot of women!
Hanzo- *hide his face behind the tablet*...!! No! I did not had a single woman...! And it's ok! *take a deep breath blushing* There's nothing wrong in be virgen.
Cass-... *go back to Hanzo* So you... Play?
Hanzo- What?
Genji - HAHAA!
Jack- Leave the man alone, Cassidy! *laughing*
Cass- I have to know! He's weird! So... Hanzo... Do you like...? *make movements of masturbation*
Hanzo- *blushing* Ca...! Can you stop?!!
Cass- Yes or no!
Hanzo- I won't answer! This is absur...!
Cass- YES OR NO 3 2 1!
Hanzo- YES OF COURSE!
Genji- HAHAA HAHAHA...!!! *Inhales* I'm dying!!
Hanzo- Shut up, Genji!
Cass- Everybody does, Hanzo, you dumb *slap his head laughing* This is ain't a tabu anymore or a dirty secret. Y/n will be your first.
Hanzo- Can't you stop?! *super shy~ super shy~*
*a week later, they came back*
You- *find Reinhardt* Rein!
Rein- *hold a mug of coffee and smile* Oh! Haha! Hello, my friend!
You- They came back from the mission, right? Hanzo, Cassidy...
Rein- Yes! I only saw Hanzo going to the infirmary, all hurt! The doctors are not here today, but he said that he knows what to do.
You- He's hurt? I'll check him! Thanks!
*Getting into the infirmary, you saw Hanzo bandaging himself in the middle of the room, his top body of full naked and you could notice his wounds o his back, arms and face. He notices you and look over his shoulder*
Hanzo- Oh, hello *he turns to you finishing to bandage his arm* Something happened?
You- *look at him up and down worried* I should be asking you that...
Hanzo- Ah this? *he chuckles looking at his bruises* I had to fight with the gang, Kiriko was... *he realizes you ere worried with him, making him confused* I...I had to beat up some bad guys, that's all.
You- I guess they beat you up back *you walk to him holding the bandage on his hands* Let me help you.
Hanzo- But I win...! *you turn him back to look at the bruises on his back, but he felt a awful pain in the ribs, but didn't let you notice* I...won, i'm ok.
You- Yeah, but still got bruises and did you break something? It seems like you can't keep your back straight *starts to touch his torso trying to find something, but when you press both side of the ribs...*
Hanzo- ARGH...! *he hold your hands* Sorry...! *he let it go*
You- How many ribs?
Hanzo- Maybe...three? *laugh nervously* You don't need to worry, I'm...! *you go find something like a pain ointment* I...what are you doing?
You- Got it *you go back to him with a cream* You should lie down.
Hanzo- Actually, I prefer like that... *you start to carefully put the cream in the hematomes and ribs area* ... you got soft hands for that.
You- I don't want you to feel more pain. *sighs still worried*
Hanzo- You barely know me, why helping?
you- First, you're my partner now, second, you're hurt. Aren't we friends?
Hanzo- Friends...? *he smirk* I guess we are.
*you bandage all his torso and stand in front of him looking at his face bruises*
You- They are mean in hurt such a pretty face... *you hold it getting in your tip toes*
Hanzo- *blush noticing how close you were* It's not hurting anymore...
You- Can you try to sit down? *you make a puppy face*
Hanzo- Why she wants to take care of me so bad...?
*he sigh and pick up a chair having difficult to sit under the ribs pain, but he do it for you. You stand pretty close, between his legs, what makes him completly nervous and shy, you make him look up to you while you also pass some pain cream on the hematomas*
Hanzo- *swallow dry looking away*
You- Is something hurting in your face? Nose? apple cheek? Something?
Hanzo- Just the cut in mu lips... *he said shyly*
You- Oh, didn't notice that... let me see. *you gently hold his face looking at the cut* Is not that bad.
Hanzo- So awkward... but I can't lie, is good to be taken care of by someone like her.
You- Maybe... *she step away getting a clean cloth and going to the sink soaking a little bit* Just a cleaning... *you go back to him, holding his face with one hand and the other cleaning the wound*
Hanzo- *his eyes get stucked in you for a while* Are you a nurse?
You- *laughs* No, I'm not...why?
Hanzo- *smile* Wanna be my nurse?
You- *look at him in surprise and laugh shyly* What? Why's that?
Hanzo- I don't really trust someone to take care of my wounds... but, you're good.
You- You like my profissionalism?
Hanzo- Yes, I do *chuckles* Should've know her before...
You- What is he doing? *you hold a smile* He keep looking at me...
Hanzo- Ah... I've heard that Cassidy calls you "pumpkin"...do you have something with him?
You- *chuckles* No, we don't... he may feel something, but he's like a big brother to me.
Hanzo- Right...*smirk* Aaah...As a partner, wanna drink something later?
You- Not before you heal *gave him little taps on his cheek and wawlking away*
Hanzo- Not alcohol...maybe a coffee.
You- *smirk and looking at him* Well...but you have to lie down.
Hanzo- Whatever my nurse says, I'll do it *smile*
You- Stop~ *you laugh shyly putting the cloth in the sink* Wanna help to stand up?
Hanzo- Yes, please.
*You go to him letting him put his arm under your shoulders, you wrap one arm around his torso trying not to touch the ribs area and he gets up in pain*
Hanzo- Aw...! *he growls feeling a strong twinge lefting all his weight on you*
You- Oh shit...! Wait! *You felt your legs failing* You're heavy! *Start to push him with you to the infirmary stretcher* Ok! Try to support yourself here!
Hanzo- I'm so sorry…! Oh…! *He lose his balance and tries not to make you fall to the ground, so he pull you aside let you fell in the stretcher while he was on top with his hands supported on the stretcher looking straight to your face in shook* So sorry! *he blush*
You- *suprised* Well...I didn't fell to the ground, thanks... *blush*
Soujourn- Hanzo, are you go...*she enters the infermary seeing the awkward scene* Ok...what the hell is happening? *she hold her smile*
Hanzo- Vivian! I...! *tries to get up but feels the pain* Dammit!
You- Captain! Can you help me with him, please? He got some broken ribs.
Soujourn- Ok *chuckles picking up Hanzo and he sat on the stretcher* You don't need to make a excuse for the situation, y/n.
You- Wha..? No! No no no! *laughs nervously* It was a accident!
Soujourn- Haha! Accident? Pretty soap opera scene to be a accident! *chuckles* No need to hide...everyone knows already.
Hanzo and you- What?
Soujourn- What what? *smirk* You two have a...connection. Specially Hanzo! Genji told everyone that you always looked at y/n.
You- He wha...? *blush and look at him*
Hanzo- I...! I-I! No! *lauhging nervously* Is not like that! I ju-just...!
Soujourn- And he said that you're a awful liar. *cross her arms and smile, he shut up looking to the ground completly blush* I'm just saying this to let you guys know that we let those thingd happen between co-workers. Love is never a fault, there's no need to hide from us.
You- Bu-but...*swallow dry* Yeah...ok. *look away*
Soujourn- Hanzo, I need you to rest and heal your ribs, I'll let y/n supervise you *wink and smile stepping out of the room*
*A awkward silence*
You-... *take a deep breath* So...
Hanzo- I'm sorry.
You- For what?
Hanzo- Look at you like a damn stalker... *hide his face on his hands*
You- Oh no... no no, there's no need to apologize...*smirk* Is kind cute.
Hanzo- What? *look at you*
You- Depends in wich way you're looking at me. How do you see me?
Hanzo- *swallowed dry, he could not lie or pretend this time* Well...Always sees you as a beautiful attractive woman, smart, independent, strong... *take a deep breath* I promised to myself to never felt attracted by someone. But...you appeared! *laugh nervously* Is...kind funny.
You- *smirk and blush* ...coffee later?
Hanzo- *surprised and smile shyly looking away* Aaah...yeah, sure.

Weekend Roundup: EN 099, 08-26-2022
If you missed any classes in Week 1 or Week 2, here’s what you need to know to get caught up.
Thursday, 08/18/2022
This was Syllabus Day. We went over the syllabus (and that’s all we did, unless you count first week announcements and my attempts to learn everybody’s names ... that part is a work in progress LOL).
If you missed the first day of class, go read your syllabus. Send me any questions via email.
Tuesday, 08/23/2022
We reviewed some of the key points from our syllabus discussion (reminder: Canvas > Simple Syllabus) and walked through instructions for getting the activation codes for your Waymaker digital course materials. You can read the assignments without an activation code, but the first time you attempt to take one of the structured quizzes, Canvas will prompt you to enter your code –– so be ready!
We spent the majority of the class period discussing what plagiarism is and how to avoid it (you may remember that I already posted a homework assignment asking for your Plagiarism Awareness Forms; if you need reminders on avoiding plagiarism, you can find good links in the assignment instructions there).
Don’t forget: The Plagiarism Awareness Forms were due on Wednesday (08/24/2022). If you have not turned those in, remember that I have to have your completed, signed forms on file in Canvas before I can accept any of your work for a grade.
ALSO: If you follow the instructions and attempt to complete the assignment instead of skipping ahead, you will not need to email me saying you cannot find the form in Canvas. The form is in the list of materials the assignment asks you to review, and it is clearly labeled “Plagiarism Awareness Form” on the appropriate page –– so do the work, and you’ll find the form.
Don’t email me asking what to do if you did not turn in the Plagiarism Awareness Form by Wednesday. What to do if you are late turning in an assignment is explained in your syllabus under “Late Work” –– if you need to ask me what to do, then you need to review the syllabus (if you review the syllabus and don’t understand the policy, THEN you can email me!).
Thursday, 08/25/2022
We went through a “syllabus self-check” exercise to see how much we remembered about course policies and basic course information. Several people joined us during drop/add, so for the people who added just Wednesday then much of the syllabus information was actually new.
You can’t remember what you don’t know, and I have seen a lot of drop/add over the years, so I will share this tip: If you add a course or change sections/instructors a few days into the semester, check right away to see if the instructor has made the syllabus available in Canvas. If they have, then the syllabus itself often provides you with a shortcut to getting caught up in the class AND gives you a much better idea of what to ask if and when you need to talk with the instructor about the work/notes you missed before you added the class.
We reviewed some basic policies (for instance, when you SHOULD skip class), and I was happy to see that somebody actually got my office hours right on the first try (for whatever reason, this is one of the most-missed questions on a syllabus self-check). Basically, however, most people seemed to be missing at least one of the self-check questions –– which just means that pretty much everybody needs to review the syllabus a couple of times. That may seem like a lot of work now, but getting familiar with the syllabus early in the semester helps you to feel grounded and confident as you move through the course. It’s worth a little work!
After our syllabus review, we briefly recapped Tuesday’s lesson on avoiding plagiarism. We discussed how intentional plagiarism happens and then took a look at how unintentional plagiarism happens, and we talked in more detail about how to avoid unintentional plagiarism in particular. Big picture: If you aren’t sure whether you need a citation or you aren’t sure how to format your citation, assume you probably need to give credit and explain in your sentence where the idea or information came from.
Early in the semester I always try to walk students through a lesson on academic titles and what they mean, mainly because nobody ever explained them to me and I spent a lot of time feeling very confused about them as a result (Google was still finding its feet when I was an undergrad). We discussed the concept of titles based on institutional rank (for instance, “Associate Professor”) vs. titles based on degree and type of academic qualification (for instance, Doctor of Education or Doctor of Philosophy). We also considered some elements you can look for when you are meeting a new professor so that you can know right away what to call them (this might save you some stress!).
After all of THAT, we discussed the first three links in your Week 2 module, focusing especially on the significance of a “growth mindset.” I told you to finish reading the rest of the links in that module and to be ready for an ONLINE diagnostic essay on Tuesday* (it is a timed activity, and you need to complete it during the same time frame as our regular class meeting, but you are free to complete it at home/in the library/wherever is comfortable for you).
FOR THURSDAY 09/01/2022: Read just the “Study Plan” link in your Week 3 module in Canvas.
IF YOU MISSED ANY DAY IN WEEK 1 OR WEEK 2:
Your catch-up activity (see “Course-Specific Attendance...” in your syllabus) is to summarize this whole document AND to tell me one food you can’t get on campus that you miss (for me it’s “Singapore noodles,” even though I’ve never eaten them in Singapore!).
*You should see your diagnostic essay ASSIGNMENT show up in Canvas sometime late Monday; you won’t be able to open it and read the prompt until close to class time on TUESDAY, because the whole point of this activity is to get the clearest possible picture of what your on-the-moment writing looks like NOW, at the beginning of the semester, when you are handed a topic and asked to sit down and write about it without preparation or assistance. This also means that you should work on your own. You are welcome to use a dictionary, if you wish to do so, but don’t work with a classmate (or other friend/colleague) for this assignment: For one thing, we just covered plagiarism, so I don’t want to see a bunch of sentences from different students that look way too much alike, and for another, I am trying to get a good understanding of what each individual student’s writing looks like before we begin work –– collaboration in this case would confuse the data.

Shigaraki Tomura x Female Reader
TW chikan, non-con, nsfw
Dirty
Staring isn’t a crime.
It’s the mantra you kept repeating to yourself as more and more passengers slowly filed in. There is nothing wrong. You’re being paranoid.
Staring isn’t a crime, but you’d feel a whole hell of a lot more comfortable if the pair of red eyes boring into you from across the train carriage weren’t accompanied by a creepy, wide grin.
You tell yourself that you’re imagining things, that you’ve read one too many shoujo mangas, because the silvery haired stranger in his ratty oversized hoodie just happens to be facing your general direction, so of course it feels like he’s staring. It doesn’t stop you from trying to tug down the hem of your skirt.
Except when the tiny hairs on the back of your neck stand on end and you decide to bite the bullet and scamper across to the other side of the carriage under the guise of getting off, the stranger follows.
He’s only staring. You’ve heard about men who like to scare girls on public transport, how they… get off on it. But the stranger seems content just to watch. There’s a Nintendo switch sticking out of his hoodie pocket, but in the fifteen minutes you’ve been riding together, he hasn’t made a move to touch it - while everybody else on the carriage is either sleeping, reading or absorbed in their phones, the stranger’s attention is fixed entirely on you.
He’s enjoying it, you think - your discomfort. The way you shift and try to subtly curl in on yourself, hiding behind other passengers, how your eyes keep darting up to see if he’s still watching (he is) before shifting your attention back to the phone in your hands. Should you text somebody? Your best friend, maybe? And say what exactly, ‘help, there’s a creepy looking guy staring at me on the train, please come get me?’
There were at least twenty other people on the carriage with you, and not one of them has noticed the silver haired man staring at you - or if they have, they’ve promptly dismissed it as nothing to concern themselves with. You’re working yourself up over nothing - he’s only doing it trying to get a reaction out of you.
You don’t want to cause a fuss over nothing.
Breathing deeply, you decide to simply not give him the satisfaction, turning your back on him to face out the window by the doors instead. You still have another twenty minutes left of the ride until you reach your stop, with any luck he’ll lose interest soon enough.
At the next station, the doors slide open and a swarm of commuters flood into the carriage. You’re bumped and brushed past, jostled about as more and more passengers try to fit onboard - it’s uncomfortable, but for once you find yourself grateful for the teeming crowds. With enough people squished between you and the pale, hoodie-clad stranger, you comfort yourself with the knowledge that he’s probably lost sight of you (or at least the parts of you he’s interested in leering at) and allow yourself to breathe and just relax-
Until a sudden jolt of the carriage sends you reeling into the chest of the commuter behind you.
On instinct you turn your head to glance over your shoulder, apologies ready on the tip of your tongue,  only for them to turn to ash in your mouth as you meet bloodshot vermillion eyes and a wide, unsettling grin.
“Whoops,” he chuckles, the sound dry and rasping, like nails raking down a chalkboard. “Better be careful, now. Don’t wanna hurt yourself.”
Your breath catches and you still, but there’s no room for you to move as pale, spindly fingers creep across your waist, sliding down the pleated fabric of your skirt. A tiny whimper, lost almost immediately to the droning hum of the carriage as it jolts along the tracks, escapes as rough fingertips graze the top of your thigh, dragging your skirt upwards in search of another prize. You feel the chest pressed against your back rumble with another laugh, dry, chapped, lips dragging possessively against the curve of your neck, and a deep, shuddering inhale.
(Is he sniffing your hair?!)
“You might wanna hold onto something, princess,” the stranger jeers. Goosebumps prickle at your skin, a deep, unsettling pit growing in your stomach. This isn’t staring - this isn’t harmless anymore.
He’s got you caged between his body and the doors, one arm shot out over your shoulder to brace himself, the other creeping up towards your panties with agonising slowness. There’s nowhere to go, but for the life of you, you don’t know why you can’t seem to make a sound. Your legs are quaking, heart thumping unsteadily as long digits probe at your panty covered sex, dragging teasingly against the outline of your slit. All it would take is a shout, a yell, and somebody would intervene - packed train or not - but despite the icy fear seeping into your veins, the rising panic as your pretty lace panties are yanked to the side, your cries are caught in your throat.
Your cheeks burn with humiliation as long digits roughly slither between your plush pussy lips. You’re not wet - how could you be? - but that doesn’t seem to bother the man violating you, not as those same fingers greedily tease at your hole for a split second before they plunge inside of you, his thumb rubbing at your crude circles around your clit like it’s a joystick. You wonder if anyone has noticed the hitch in your breath, the soft, whimpering whine that you can’t quite hold back as he fucks you on his fingers, stretching you out. Facing out the window, there’s nobody to see the tears that spill down your cheeks, the way your features contorts in pain - and something else - as his fingertips press and drag along your warm, tight cunny walls.
There’s no rhythm or technique as he roughly mashes his palm against your sex, but suddenly it’s not so much an effort to speak out as it is to smother your own noises - the thought of somebody catching you like this, seeing him finger fuck you in on a crowded, public train in the middle of the day making you want to curl up and disappear entirely.
His fingers are stuffed deep inside of your pussy, fucking you in earnest, it doesn’t matter if you were willing or not, you let him get this far without so much as a peep. Who’s going to believe that you didn’t want this, weren’t silently begging for it - that with every flick of his wrist this stranger is raping you in broad daylight in the middle of a crowded train?
You bite down on your bottom lip, hands clenching into pathetic fists at your side as the man behind you moans and grunts in your ear. There’s something hard and warm pressed against your ass - it takes you a moment to realise that it’s his cock, and his hips are rutting eagerly against your backside.
His panting breath tickles at your neck, “Gettin’ all nice ‘n wet, such a good little slut. You -hah- you enjoying this, princess?”
Revulsion rises like a wave, crashing through you, but you can’t deny the building slick you feel easing his passage - your cunt is all but drooling around his fingers. You can’t bear to look around to see if any of the other passengers have noticed, if they can hear the lewd sounds of him fingering you like a man possessed.
Your forehead falls against the cool, glass window, your eyes squeezing shut as more tears fall. It doesn’t make a difference, you can’t disappear into your mind and pretend that this isn’t happening, he’s making sure of it. His hips are grinding faster against the swell of your ass, his fingers picking up their pace in response. It’s like he wants you to cum with him, and when a third finger slips inside of you, crooks and slams against that sweet spot that has you gasping, you know that it’s not far off.
“Tomura,” he pants desperately into your ear as he ruts up against you like a beast in heat, “Fuck! My n-name is Tomura.”
You don’t know why he’s telling you. Does he think you’ll cry it out as his thumb swipes messily at your clit and your tight cunny walls unwittingly squeeze down on his fingers? Or does he just want you to know the name of the stranger about to make you cum in a train full of strangers.
You don’t have time to ponder the question, not as his teeth sink into the tender skin of your neck to muffle his growls and his fingers speed up, that tight coil of heat in your core pulling taut and snapping as unwanted pleasure explodes like fireworks, overwhelming your system as you convulse and shudder around him.
Your vision goes white, a strangled sound somewhere between a sob and a moan leaves your lips.
Tomura snarls, riding out his own orgasm, warm cum spurting into his jeans as he all but collapses against you. For a moment, you two stay like that, his sweaty, larger frame draped over yours, his chest heaving, hand still caught up beneath your skirt.
In the wake of your climax, shame and humiliation rear their ugly heads. You came, you enjoyed it, your own violation. No amount of reassurance that it’s just your body's natural reaction to stimuli can stop the rising disgust that surges through you so violently it threatens to choke you. You feel dirty - filthy and used - especially with Tomura’s face nuzzled in your neck, his tongue laving at your flushed skin, the blood welling from his overzealous bite.
His hand slides out of your underwear, using your skirt to wipe off the syrupy wetness that clings to his digits. You stomach churns in response as the train pulls up alongside the station platform, passengers once again jostling as they prepare to disembark. Even now you can’t force yourself to move, can’t shove him away like you so desperately want to.
You’re pathetic.
He sighs contentedly, chapped lips curling into a smirk as the voice over the p.a announces the incoming stop. If Tomura notices the tears that wet your cheeks, your shoulders shaking with quiet sobs, he doesn't pass comment, choosing instead to press a sickeningly sweet kiss to your temple as the train slows down to a halt.
“That was real fun, Y/N,” he coos gleefully. “We should do it again some time.”
And then he’s gone, disappearing into the crowd of exiting passengers, and your trembling legs finally give out.

Member: LEE JUYEON
Genre: angst, fluff, romance, chaebol feels cause i can totally see juyeon as a chaebol who’s self-sustaining idk
A/N: Here’s juyeon in something that looks like a suit/formal wear cause i couldn’t find a gif of him in a suit :”) m sed. i’m also very very very weak for settings that are of high-class and somewhat jazzy/sophisticated/expensive themes. throwing in romance just boosts the bonus points ;”)

you couldn’t help but to smile softly at the sound of your colleagues lowkey dissing the hell out of your boss. you’ve been working at this law firm for nearly half a year now, and nearly nobody working in the building has any clue how your boss looks like.
there wasn’t a single photo of him in the building, and even if there was, the only person who knew how he looked like refused to disclose the information.
“don’t you find it strange that mr lee sangyeon refuses to tell us how our boss even looks like? surely there’s some portrait of him hanging somewhere in the office,” you look at chanhee who was on the verge of spitting his food out in the midst of aggressively complaining.
you laugh, using your tongue and cleaning the small bits of tomato and lettuce from your teeth, watching sunwoo grab a napkin. you expected him to wipe his mouth before going off on a diss, but he just crumples it in his hand and says whatever he wanted to say.
“i asked him before and he said that we’d gossip about him if we knew who he really was. all i know is that he hasn’t been in the building since his father gave him the law firm.”
“huh?” chanhee’s eyes were wide open and staring at sunwoo upon the new information. “don’t tell me... so he’s just a chaebol who thinks he doesn’t need to work just ‘cause his father owns the company? wha... this guy is really something else...”
you exchange glances with eric, who had been silent alongside you and listening to the conversation.
“if you google the law firm and his father’s name, only his father’s name comes up,” sunwoo pulls up his phone, mouth still chewing on the last bit of his pasta.
“oh! what’s his name? are there any pictures of him?” chanhee leaned towards the younger, trying to take a look at the phone screen while sunwoo googles the name.
“ah, he’s only been referred to as the son of his father... no pictures of him...”
chanhee bares his teeth in disappointment, pulling away and returning his attention to his food.
“what’s the internet good for if we can’t even find the information we need...”
you chuckle, taking a sip from your coffee.
the last six months you’ve been working here, you’ve been clearing every case with ease. you’ve worked with chanhee, sunwoo and with eric on the latest one, and you’ve won every case you needed to turn up in court for.
but all those wins were at the expense of your sleep and alone time.
there was nothing for you to worry about though, mr lee sangyeon has already given you feedback that you were doing well anyway.
but you couldn’t help but wonder: just who is your boss?
you, chanhee, eric and sunwoo entered the company in the same batch six months ago, and since then your boss has not once stepped into the building. what was strange was that nobody else has spoken about him. it almost seemed like every other employee under the law firm was either terrified to even speak of him, or that they were simply clueless.
you’ve tried digging the information from the colleague sitting next to your cubicle: lee jaehyun.
but never does he once budge. all he’s ever done when you ask about your phantom boss was shake his head and tell you not to ask anybody else about him. you’ve tried to ask if he was a scary boss or that he’s never even seen him before, but he shooed you away and told you to focus on your cases instead.
the week passes in a flash, with a new case you’ve been working on with chanhee that’s been holding the both of you back in office till late hours was killing you. if it wasn’t for mr lee sangyeon shutting off all the electricity in the office, you and chanhee would’ve probably spent the night there.
“the both of you are allowed to report to office at 10 am tomorrow. you guys get two hours discount because i know this case is pretty tough. it’s your first business lawsuit, right?”
chanhee’s eyes were rolled back so far in his head that he looked drunk, so you take the initiative to respond by nodding with whatever energy you had left in you.
“okay. good job for now. go home,” the manager taps on chanhee’s shoulders and jerks him a little. “go home or the both of you are fired!”
chanhee shoots up at the word “fired”, only bowing in apology before the both of you gets chased out of the office.
THE NEXT MORNING
“GOOOOOOD MOR--”
“shut the fuck up!”
you turn your head sharply at sunwoo who hissed at you. he was seated near the entrance of the office, so he was the first person to hear you push open the doors like you were entering heaven.
“well, that’s not very kind of yo--”
“he’s fucking here, you dumbwit!” sunwoo has a finger pressed to his lips and a look of urgency cemented into his face. frankly, he looked like he was in pain.
eric, who was sitting right next to him, looks at both you and chanhee and shakes his head gently.
you look around the office, and you notice everybody’s heads were dipped into their laptops and case files. it was so quiet, it’ll be an understatement if you said you could hear a pin drop.
“i’m sorry, who’s here?” you frown at sunwoo, frowning a little while you remember you didn’t bother wearing a brooch. it wasn’t compulsory, but mr lee sangyeon has mentioned before that it was an office tradition. you note that nobody else has the brooch on besides chanhee and lee jaehyun.
“oh my god, you’re a fucki--”
“oh!” you hear your manager call out. you and chanhee react to the enthusiastic greeting, and you see your manager walking along the larger offices and around the cubicles where you worked. “the both of you are here! i was beginning to worry you were going to be late.”
mr lee sangyeon stops about two metres before you, hands in his pocket. you notice he has a brooch on his breast pocket, and you don’t remember him ever wearing it.
“why don’t the two of you settle down for a bit, and around...” he looks at his watch. “ten thirty? meet me outside the CEO’s office.”
you hear chanhee hiccup at the instruction. though you were a lawyer yourself, you take longer than necessary to process the information.
“huh?” you blurt out. you notice sunwoo facepalming in the corner of your eye while your manager had the stiffest smile on his face. “the... the CEO?”
“yes, the CEO.”
you hear chanhee stammer a little bit. “uh... i... did we do anything wrong? are we getting fired? why are we going to the CEO’s of--”
“oh, no! none of that,” your manager bursts into laughter and waves his hand in your faces. “the CEO was just looking through the case files and he thinks this one is going to be tricky. he’s thinking of helping the both of you through it!”
your face doesn’t move, but your eyes turn to look at chanhee who was now standing right next to you.
the ceo hasn’t even been in the damn building since he got the law firm. who does he think he is, thinking of helping us ‘through it’?
“oh, don’t sweat it! he’s not as bad as people say, trust me.”
you force out a weak smile, noticing sunwoo giving you two thumbs-up without smiling. it was as if he was sending you off to your death.
“ohmygod we’re gonna get fired we’re gonna get fired ohmyjesus we’re going to get fired we’regonnagetfi--”
“shut your trap, would you?” you whisper harshly, punching chanhee lightly in his arm. the both of you were standing outside the CEO’s office, the digital clock in the corner of the space displaying 1027.
“mr lee already said we’re not getting fired, so stop freaking out on me!” you urge him to collect himself as you hear the door of your manager’s door click open.
“when you’re inside, just address him with ‘sir’ and mr lee if you’re talking to me, okay?” your manager grins widely at you. you absorb his demeanor, only now realising that he must’ve known that the ceo was going to come into office today. there was no other reason why he chose today to wear the brooch.
“relax, and just hear him out carefully with whatever he says, okay? the both of you will be fine as long as i’m around.”
you frown to yourself, and you could almost hear chanhee get a whole asthma attack behind you.
‘you’ll be fine as long as i’m around’? is this guy a wolf or vampire or something?
your manager turns and knocks on the frosted glass, and you turn to notice a vague, dark shadow standing inside.
“come in.”
your manager pushes the door open, and chanhee pushes you to enter the office first.
the first thing you notice was the scent of the space once you were inside.
there was a light scent that reminded you of the mountains and trees whenever you went hiking. the scent of dew, pine trees and fresh air was the only thing you could smell.
the next thing you noticed was how incredibly neat and large the office was. you’ve never stepped into this office before, and though mr lee sangyeon’s was right next to this office, it looked like it was easily double the size of his.
“go easy on them,” your manager’s voice snapped you back to reality. you found yourself standing awkwardly behind the chairs that looked expensive on its own. “don’t scare my newbies, please.”
you hear your manager laugh. your eyes travel from the orientation of the room and it’s black and golden-brown colors to see the man that sent the entire office into complete silence since you’ve stepped in, and you nearly lost your grip on all the files you had in your arm.
“why?” your boss laughs as he turns around from the shelf behind his desk, placing a file on the surface before looking at you and chanhee. “there’s no reason for them to be scared as long as they haven’t done anything wrong.”
you blink multiple times, forgetting that anybody might’ve thought you had something in your eye if they saw it. your boss looked even younger than your manager, and he wasn’t even in a suit.
he was in a blue blazer with silver buttons, with a button down top underneath and black pants with his hair waxed upwards. had you not known this man was your boss, you would’ve thought he was some random guy who broke into his office. you were expecting someone in his mid thirties or something, so seeing someone barely a few years older than you standing in the office labelled ‘CEO’ was difficult to swallow.
“choi chanhee, right?” he first looks at your friend, fingers mindlessly fiddling with each other behind the files he was holding in his hands. chanhee quickly bows. you observe carefully as his eyes travel from chanhee to you.
“you... you’re the one who’s closed like, three cases in the six months you were here, right?” he tilts his head while he asks the question. you bow cautiously with your hand over your chest.
“i only let them take up this case because they both stood out to me the most,” your manager pulls out both chairs at the table, gesturing to the both of you to sit. the ceo smiles, turning and leaning his rear against the edge of the table. he looks out the window behind his desk and beside the shelf, watching the city pass by second by second.
your manager gets the both of you settled in the seats like a parent, and you watch as chanhee tries his best to speak with his eyes.
your manager shakes his head lightly, only to pat chanhee on his shoulder.
“don’t you dare scare them!” your manager warns the ceo. he looks over his shoulder and nods without a smile. chanhee looks worriedly at your manager leaving the office, physically uneasy as the door shuts with a click.
there was a heavy, awkward silence that hung in the air while both you and chanhee watch your ceo stare out of the window. you couldnt even see his face because all you were looking at were the creases on his back.
“the first rule i need you two to follow if we are to work together is professionalism,” his voice startles you, but he doesn’t turn around. “meaning that whatever obstacles that come by, we discuss it as a team. the company that filed for this lawsuit, objectively speaking, was in the wrong. it’s highly likely that we’ll lose as the defendant if we make one small mistake.”
you hear chanhee gulp, and if it was loud enough for you to hear, your ceo probably heard it too.
he finally pushes himself off the desk and turns around, pulling out the chair so he was now sitting facing the both of you.
his eyes were so focused, so serious, that you realise now why your manager hasn’t said anything about him to any of you newbies.
he was intimidating and there was a look of sheer determination in him that would’ve scared the balls out of certain people. lee jaehyun was probably one of them.
your manager must’ve told anybody who has already met him to keep quiet about his intimidating personality.
but... where the hell has he been the last six months? and was he even qualified to be giving us this speech?
“the second thing i need the both of you to know is that this isn’t going to be an easy case. i’m going to need the both of you to commit to it right now, and if you can’t just be honest. i’m not going to fire you just because you’re worried about losing a difficult case in the first six months you’re working here.”
you purse your lips, confident that you were going to get through this, even if it meant losing.
chanhee doesn’t agree though.
“actually,” you snap your head to glare at chanhee when he opens his mouth. your ceo leans back in his seat, his face a lack of emotion. “i can’t deny i’m worried that we’re going to lose the case. i agree that there’s a high chance that we might lose as the defense counsel so--”
“are you nuts?” you interrupt him with a low voice. as if your ceo isn’t going to hear it. “so what if we lose the case?”
“i’m sorry, i just--”
“no, it’s fine, i totally understand,” your ceo shakes his head and leans forward again, resting his arms on the surface of the desk and reaching for the case file. “i know how it feels like to lose a case, even when you know it’s difficult to win.”
you snap your head back to the man sitting opposite you with eyes made of steel, completely forgetting that he was your ceo.
‘i know how it feels’?
“sangyeon hyung told me that you were exhausted yesterday after working on this case all day, so i’m giving you a chance to walk away and trust me and y/n with it.”
you return your attention to chanhee, your head chanting “no no no no no no please no”
but chanhee gives you an apologetic look.
you sigh and resign to fate, wanting to bury your face in your palms, but the sound of your ceo clicking on a pen prevents you from doing so.
“alright, i’ll get the details of the case fixed by the end of the day. before you clock out in the evening, do give it a check and inform me if your name is still on the case in the system.”
he scribbles something in the case file and gives chanhee a look that you couldn’t read. no smile, no nod, nothing.
“if there’re no further questions then you may leave,” he directs the instruction at chanhee. you look at him with begging eyes, telling him not to ditch you alone with this man.
you should’ve known chanhee was merciless at heart, and you were on the verge of cursing at him when you see him shoot you a cheeky smile when you watch him escape.
your eyes remain glued to chanhee’s back as he exits the office, and the frosted glass door takes forever to close.
“anything about the glass door that’s so fascinating to you?”
you turn your neck so fast at his question that you feel a nerve snap. you wince a little at the pain that shoots up your head, but you manage to collect yourself while he looks through the case file that chanhee left behind.
“i know what you’re thinking,” he looks up at you through his lashes, and you’ve never seen the whites of someone’s eyes so... glaring. “but i’m very sure you don’t need to concern yourself with whatever those questions or thoughts are.”
he closes the case file and leans forward, so much that you felt the need to lean back into your seat.
“all you need to know is that i’m here to help you with this case, despite the level of difficulty. and i want you to know that i have faith in you. that even if you lose, you would’ve fought a good fight.”
what in the world is he even talking about now?
he doesn’t give you time to let nonsensical thoughts run through your head. all he does was fumble around in his drawers for some blank paper and he furiously types on his computer.
you weren’t sure if you were just overwhelmed by all the questions that you couldn’t even form in your head, or that he just waltzed in here and took over a case that belonged to you and chanhee. either way, you were completely dumbfounded.
he prints you a case file sheet, and before you could even read what was on it, he speaks again.
“just follow that sheet and do whatever you need to do to find the information and details. after you’re done, you will submit it back to me and i’ll hand you the next sheet.”
what?
“i’m sorry, wha--”
“did i say you could ask questions?” he looks at you, writing stopped and the tip of the pen still on a piece of paper in the file. you unconsciously shoot him a dirty look at his response, but you don’t realise it yourself because he doesn’t bother giving you a reaction.
“you may return to your working space. have it done by tonight and get out of the office by 8pm. you will report to me tomorrow at 8am, and if you’re late, you’ll be removed from the case.”
8pm was earlier than the recommended end-of-work time.
you open your mouth to protest, not realising that your face has contorted into a mess of anger and completely disbelief. but he looks up at you again, and if his eyes could talk, you swore they said, shut up and get out.
you swallow your pride, sucking a deep breath so hard that you were sure he could hear it. you stand up, give a polite bow, and turn on your heels to leave his office.
once the door clicks behind you and you make sure your manager was back in his office, you start mouthing long strings of vulgarities, trembling and shaking within your control.
“motherfucker-- what the fuck--”
you return to your seat opposite chanhee’s, and sunwoo and eric rush over to you at the sight of your silent tantrum.
“what happened? is he as shitty as we predicted him to be?”
you huff and bury your face into your hands, careful not to let your fingers mess up your hair.
“i should’ve dropped the damn case, ugh,” you groan, not wanting to engage in a gossip session with sunwoo and eric. chanhee shoos them away to let you work on whatever you were told to do, and you did just that.
to your dismay, this cycle repeats itself for the next two weeks.
nothing but filling up case file sheets like it was homework, and your boss never once has a conversation about it with you. you were starting to wonder if he was just feeding you worksheets to help him get through the case because there was nearly nothing else you could think of that he could’ve been working on on his own.
you were more than happy to be working on this case, and though you were given more time to rest at home, you were losing time with your colleagues. on top of that, it’s not like you went to sleep the moment you got home. you worked on it until your eyes couldn’t bear to stay open, and it wasn’t difficult to notice because sunwoo made fun of your eyebags one week after you started filling up case file worksheets.
you were ready to storm into his office in strong protest one morning, but your manager breaks the unfortunate news to you on a bright, sunny day.
“excuse me?” your mouth hung agape at the new information. “he wants me to what?”
sunwoo, eric and chanhee look up from their desks and watches as you painfully process the instructions. your manager doesn’t do anything besides continue the rest of the message relayed from your ceo.
“there’ll be a Porsche at the entrance of the building in about an hour’s time, so you should have all things case-related with you when you get into the car.”
you couldn’t believe your fucking ears.
not only was he feeding you worksheets, now you had to fix your work schedule around him?
you were huffing as you searched through his shelves for the case-related items, only to realise there was nothing left of it in his office. you couldn’t be bothered wondering where all the materials were, because everything the case needed had been filled up by you, and he’s probably stashed it somewhere waiting to claim the credit for himself.
chanhee watches you as you gather every file and sheet of paper case-related from your work space, and you don’t bother finishing your coffee before offering it to chanhee.
“call the fucking police if i don’t text you by dinner please,” you nearly snap at chanhee, filled with frustration and anger. he laughs at your demise, taking a sip from the coffee you barely drank as you drag yourself to leave the office.
your suitcase was much heavier than usual with all the case files in it, so you were only grateful that the Porsche’s chauffeur was kind enough to help you get the door open.
“sorry for needing you to get the door open,” you huff, slightly out of breath as the chauffeur returns to the driver’s seat. you pull the seatbelt over your chest and buckle it, patting down the creases of your pants and blazer.
“oh, no it’s totally normal! we’ve been instructed to help whoever’s getting into the vehicles mr lee send anyway, regardless of the things they are carrying.”
“uh... mr lee? lee sang yeon?”
“huh?” the driver looks at your through the rear mirror. his eyes light up once he processes your words and chuckles warmly. “oh, no. mr lee sangyeon is the manager of the law firm. i’m talking about mr lee juyeon, the ceo.”
so that’s his name.
“oh,” you mumble to yourself, looking out the window as the car drives away from the building. “lee juyeon... would’ve been more convincing if lee sangyeon was the one who gave those instructions.”
“did you say something?”
“uh--” you stutter.
shit.
“i--”
“are you one of his lawyers who think that he’s mean and cold and unreasonable?” he smiles at you with a look of mischief in his eyes.
isn’t he?
asshole.
you struggle to read his expression, because all you could think of was the fact that you were on his way to his home office just because he was ‘unable to be in the office today’.
“judging by your silence, i’m guessing you are one of those people.”
you look away, telling yourself to shut up before you say anything horrible and get yourself fired.
the chauffeur must’ve picked up on your discomfort, and he doesn’t say anything else the rest of the drive.
the drive was barely ten minutes compared to the near one hour it took you to travel from your apartment to the office. but what was more shocking to you was where this douchebag lived.
the Porsche stops at a building in an area that you’ve never stepped foot in, for the sole reason that this was the most expensive building in the city.
you should’ve expected it, but seeing it for yourself and being physically present made it all the more harder to believe it.
you were so busy looking up at the building in awe from the inside of the car that you don’t notice the chauffeur get the door open, and someone else comes to get your suitcase for you.
you now notice both the chauffeur and the man who took your suitcase for you had brooches of the same design but different colors on their blazers.
you follow the man who took your suitcase into the lift lobby, the chandelier that hung way up above your head was the first thing that you took notice of. the walls and floor were black and gold, and everything else in the lift lobby was either silver or bronze.
you would’ve totally thought this was a hotel if you didn’t know your ceo lived here.
you stand in awkward silence as the lift ascends to the top floor, and it takes you a moment to realise that the top floor were all penthouses because the lift stops, and the man presses a button before the doors opens directly into someone’s living room.
your eyes widen in wonder, and for a moment you believed you were in some sightseeing tower. beyond the living room was a whole glass wall that spanned the length of the living room, allowing you to take in the view of the city.
there were two flights of stairs on both sides as you exit the lift, and you catch a glimpse of the extremely large television screen mounted onto the wall on the left, and the kitchen on the right.
you could’ve spent the entire time just gawking at the orientation and the view, but the sound of shoes clacking against the marble floor steals your attention away.
you turn, your footing now adjacent to the first steps of the stairs on both sides, only to see your boss walking down the steps with a phone held to his ear.
the man who has your suitcase bows, earning a small nod and wave from your ceo.
huh, the waving is new.
the man lays your suitcase down by the table that was sitting on huge rug on the floor in the middle of the living room. you walk over, scanning the expensive looking three-set sofa that surrounded the table, the only empty side facing the television that looked more like a theatre screen up close.
“i understand,” you watch as your ceo pats the man on his back and send him off, attention still on the conversation on the phone. “i look forward to meeting you next month, mr shin. always an honour working with you.”
you turn back, now looking at the table and the sofas, but your eyes naturally follow the light, and you begin walking to the glass window where the city passes by below your feet. cars were the size of ants and humans looked like specks of dust.
“you know i just got my windows cleaned yesterday.”
you step back, quickly realising that you were so cooped up with staring at the world outside that you pressed your forehead and nose against the surface of the glass, leaving ugly marks on it. your hands fly up to your mouth, your eyes widening at the sight.
your first instinct was to reach up with your arm and wipe it off, but your boss was suddenly next to you, his grip on your wrist stopping whatever you wanted to do.
“it’s fine. leave it be, i’ll get someone to wipe it off later.”
he releases his hold on you and walks away.
you wince quietly to yourself, mentally berating yourself for being so mindless and careless despite being in his (pent)house while he picks up your suitcase and takes out all the case files.
“i need you to look through the 3rd and 7th piece over and tell me more about the company’s leases and financial bonds,” he looks through the file and leaves it open on the third sheet, laying it flat on the table. “give me a minute.”
you sit on the sofa, your heels making it difficult to walk on the rug. you watch as he takes two steps at a time up the stairs and disappears behind a wall that you assume was a hallway.
you spent a whole day staring at each piece of worksheet, so you’ve basically memorised everything about the third and seventh sheet he needed you to look at.
you wonder why he was wearing an all black fit in the comfort of his own home instead.
within a minute he was rushing back down the stairs, and in his hand was a file you’ve never seen before. there were so many sheets in it that you wonder if it was just torn right out of a book.
but he lays it down next to yours, and everything in it was case-related with information that you’ve never seen before.
he lets you look through the sheets in his file, and you can’t help to stare at him with utter confusion. he catches you watching him with a perplexed expression and allows you a few moments before everything clicks in your head.
“you’re a fucking lawyer.”

What Would Success for New Search Engines Look Like?
Tumblr media
Since the early 2000s, Google has been the most popularly used search engine across the world. Over this period, from being just another typical Silicon Valley startup and longshot to becoming the protector of the internet, controlling algorithms with enormous business implications and building a reputation for spreading its business into various areas in the name of offering an improved user experience.
In recent times, the increased inspection over its business practices has resulted in government regulators getting tough on anticipated wrongdoings, and a fraction of users have also demonstrated a little inclination towards a more privacy-oriented search experience. Google is also facing opposition from other search engines regarding how it is presenting search engine alternatives to Android users in Europe.
This wave of opposition to the market leader may develop favorable conditions for other search engines to contend themselves. New search engines, Neeva, founded by the former Senior Vice President of Google Ads, and You.com, founded by Richard Socher, former Chief at Salesforce, have been announced this year. While snatching away a considerable fraction of search market share from Google may be a part of their overall objective, becoming successful as a new search engine is subject to a lot of factors and may occur in a subtle form.
REGULATORS WANT TO SEE MORE COMPETITION IN SEARCH
In the past several years, Google has been facing increased inspection over its alleged anti-competitive practices in different parts of the world. Back in 2018, the European Commission hit Google with the largest antitrust fine ever of roughly $5 billion. And just a year before, the EC had penalized Google with a $2.7 billion fine for favoring its own content in the SERPs.
But this is not it. It is alleged that Google is using its contracts and market power to neutralize the competitors, and the Department of Justice has filed an antitrust lawsuit against the search engine giant for the same at the federal level.
However, if it is found that Google did engage in anti-competitive strategies, then the question moves on to solutions.
The House Judiciary Subcommittee on Antitrust issued a lengthy report recommending various potential solutions, including “structural separation” in an attempt to re-establish competition. However, the company is projecting confidence and might take the dispute to court.
In case that happens, it will still take at least two years before any initial judgment comes out, and even after that, Google may pursue an appeal. Nevertheless, with the investigation over the company’s superior position in the market, reaching a turning point, potential competitors have eventually begun emerging from the thicket and trying to stand out from the market leader.
CAN ANYONE REALLY COMPETE WITH GOOGLE?
Considering the position that Google occupies in the market today, the number of users it boasts, and how it has established itself as a crucial part of our everyday lives, it seems a bit irrational. Honestly speaking, developing a search engine that could really go head-to-head with the search engine giant itself would mean that it should at the very least offer the same experience to the users, i.e., relevant, fast, handy, and cognitively low load search results. And let’s suppose the rival search engine actually manages to offer as good an experience as Google, it would also need to get those billions of users to trust them rapidly who today wildly favor Google. But the latter seems more plausible considering how Google is shifting from being the beloved startup to becoming the evil empire over the last couple of years.
Besides, building a search engine that can compete with Google is impossible without having access to the kind of data they do. They know what users clicked, liked, or disliked, what they found most relevant to what queries, and so on. Users turn to search engines for queries, and Google, over all these years, has gathered an enormous amount of data like no other. In addition to all this, the quality of search results matters too. And it would take years for a new search engine to be able to accumulate that kind of data.
Despite the bar being so high, these two search engines (Neeva and You.com) still believe that there are some areas of opportunities that Google hasn’t tapped into yet. In fact, they have already attracted investment towards that cause too. While undoubtedly it is a good thing, it is highly improbable to level the playing field with funding. Because let’s be honest here, even with Microsoft’s immense resources, Bing mostly failed to win over users or digital marketers from Google.
CATCHING GOOGLE DOES NOT HAVE TO BE THE GOAL
Rather than focusing on creating a search engine that could go head-to-head with Google, the goal could be to develop a powerful team of users who are interested in creating their own corner of the web. Moreover, this strategy won’t require the search engine to gather billions of users like Google in order to become successful.
The search engine DuckDuckGo uses a similar strategy to stand apart from the others and appeal to the user group who wants more privacy online. In fact, DuckDuckGo observed an all-time high number of monthly search queries, which was almost 2.4 billion last month. However, it is still far behind Google, which boasts more than 3.5 billion search queries per day.
Neeva will be offering a subscription-based service, which, according to reports, will cost less than $10 every month after its launch. The search engine strives to offer a personalized yet ad-free search experience to its users. There are chances that it may not need to overcome a lot of technological obstacles since it will be leveraging the existing data sources (such as Bing search results, Apple Maps, and weather.com) and content. This might help Neeva save a lot on its development budget while starting out. If the company successfully manages to captivate enough subscribers, it plans to reduce its monthly charges, making it an even more appealing alternative search engine for users.
On the other hand, the newly introduced search engine You.com hasn’t announced the exact details yet, but its website hints that it would help users with their buying decisions.  Moreover, its early access survey also asks users several questions relevant to eCommerce.
While we don’t have enough information about it yet, if You.com plans to become an eCommerce player, it will have to go head-to-head with the eCommerce giant Amazon. Competing with Amazon is again a big challenge – from the scale of operators, particularly on the shipping and delivery side, to captivating enough investment to endure the continuous price wars that Amazon would happily engage in.
However, distinguishing itself in the eCommerce sector is still a more realistic path. There are still some features that You.com could introduce just like other eCommerce sites such as eBay, Etsy, etc. have managed to build a unique identity for themselves in their niches.
Tumblr media
WHAT SUCCESS MAY LOOK LIKE FOR NEW SEARCH ENGINES?
The growth of the potential Google or Amazon competitors, in the long run, will, to some extent, rely on how successfully they are able to capture a substantial audience initially. It is hard to predict anything as of now since neither Neeva nor You.com have revealed more details or any expected launch date.
While their ‘secret ingredient’ as they revealed, is recognizing those audiences with specific needs that the search engine giant itself has failed to address yet seems like a good start, they shouldn’t have revealed it so early, at least until their launch. This might backfire. There are good chances that the users will continue using Google like they usually do, but use Neeva or You.com for particular purposes. But if the companies are able to retain the same level of focus, they could have a chance at becoming successful.
CONCLUSION – THE POTENTIAL EFFECT ON GOOGLE
With more feasible competitors coming into existence, the users and marketers will have more options, but this might also somewhat impact Google’s own strategy. Google may be compelled to react by catering more to users and SEO professionals’ preferences, which might ultimately upgrade the landscape for everybody.
With the rise of competitors, specific innovations may spark new innovations or implementations by Google. The impact on Google is unlikely to become visible anytime soon, considering that even a large extent of success for the competitors would still mean tiny numbers for Google.
While Google has never actually had a real rival before, they took some pretty sloppy measures when they anticipated one (in Facebook) like launching the social media platform Google Plus which has now vanished. So, as of now, we can only hope that something like that would happen again, which will finally set off an actual search market rather than just a monopoly.

Supernatural - Sign He Loves You Part 2
Authors Note: So I guess I shouldn’t have really left it on a cliff-hanger and when you fall asleep at night thinking you were happy with the outcome and then you shoot up awake and be like I have an IDEA! Yeah that was me at 4am - countless times. So here is part 2. For those who haven’t read it or need a refresher. And as always thank you for all your support its amazing <3
Tumblr media
THE ROAD SO FAR…“She was stupid Sammy! Just plain stupid trying to protect us both and now she paid the price” I love you. “It’ll be a shock for her” I love you too. “Everything will be fine I promise” Son of a bitch. “Hello Fawn I’ve come to make you a deal.”
“Hello Fawn I’ve come to make you a deal” Crowley said to where you was met with a smug look on his face. Swallowing you took a slight step back wondering why the King of Hell was here and how he got in without setting of the alarm.
“Fawn relax, no need to worry your pretty little head but I did happen to hear about your unfortunate turn of events” He added.
“The pun intended Crowley?” You asked crossing your arms.
“Exactly” He replied.
“Wait? W...what’s happening?” You muttered to yourself, bringing your arms around to protect yourself.
“A taste of what’s to come if you agree to my terms.”
Standing now in silence, you calmed your breathing. Tucking a piece of your hair behind your ear you composed yourself. Breathing steadily.
“Out with them then, your terms explain away” You said to the demon.
“It’s quite simple really” Crowley started as he pulled out a bit of folded paper from his pocket.
“Kill the name that’s on the list and your hearing will be as crystal clear as a babies bottom is smooth.” He finishes buttoning his jacket back up. Taking the piece of paper from him you opened it to see the name.
“Along with giving me your soul.” He muttered under his breath.
“Why the hell is my brothers name written on this?” You asked bitterly getting more angry as the seconds carried past.
“My, my Fawn you sure share you temper with squirrel. But your brother is no more, dead, deceased… capiche? Its just a unruly demon floating around in that meat-suit of his. Unruly demons are bad for business.” Crowley replied to you interrupting your rant.
“I may not be deaf at his moment Crowley but I heard you also wanted my soul, so what’s the price tag on that then?” You asked.
“10 years, just like everybody else” He replied.
“No way” You shot back shaking your head.
“Come now Fawn, I’m being generous that’s more then your life expectancy as a hunter” Crowley countered.
“I don’t see Castiel floating down here to help you, I happen to be your next best bet.” He added. You started to pace a little.
“Crowley that is where your very wrong, Sam and Dean their helping me adjust so we can work and live as a family. I can still hunt, I can still do research whether that be from in here or on the road.” You replied running a hand through your hair.
“You really expect to think squirrel is going to let you on the road after this?” Crowley replied to you.
“Leave Crowley” You pleaded.
“Think on my offer Fawn, I trust you want to find your brother or what’s left of him” He said, clicking his fingers disappearing. Taking your momentarily returned hearing with him.
Now you had returned to hearing nothing but silence your eyes had started to well up and a few stray tears rolled down your face, sniffling you wiped them with the cuff of ‘your’ shirt and padded back to bed. Your mind was running around a hundred times a moment and you thought what you had told Crowley was a pack of lies, deep down you knew that your life on the road as a hunter would come to a stop. You felt weak and a burden...
Entering your room you noticed that Dean was basically still in the same position as to when you left, moving the covers you got back into bed and cuddled up to him taking in his warmth seeking the comfort you had desperately craved, he stirred a little moving his arm to bring you closer to him, planting a kiss on the top of your head and then fell back into his deep slumber. Sighing you closed your eyes and tried to get a few more hours shut eye.
But your plan to get some so more sleep drastically failed, your conversation with the King of Hell just kept playing over and over in your head and if it wasn’t for the fact tossing and turning probably would have woken up Dean, you opted for staring at the ceiling it was boring and unbearable and my god were you exhausted but you could just not seem to settle.
Surprisingly exhaustion came and you finally had been able to drop back off to sleep, you were that tired that you hadn’t felt Dean get out of bed.
You stirred once more feeling a cold empty patch beside you, fluttering your eyes open you looked at the digital clock on the bedside table seeing that the time was 10:38am, you still felt rather groggy and opted for a cup of two of coffee knowing that caffeine would be your best friend in this situation like it had done many times in the past. With a few splashes of water and a change of clean clothes you headed towards the kitchen, you had wondered where the boys were walking towards the library popping your head in the entrance to see the large room empty with just a simple note left on the table.
GONE TO GET PIE – D X
You had let out a small chuckle and seeing Dean’s note brought a smile to your lips, you also happened to notice Sam’s laptop was also left on the desk surrounded by some papers and files. At first you wanted to abandon your current quest for a caffeine fix but went against the idea knowing that you would happen to regret it later in the day, so picking up the laptop and heading to the kitchen like you had set out to do, getting what you needed to put on another pot of coffee. While it was doing its magic you opened the lid on the laptop and brought up Sam’s program for getting into the police database. Entering your brothers name you had found numinous reports and within a matter of moments with some quick skimming your whole world was turned upside down. Growing up your brother was a good kid never got into trouble at school got good grades and then went into the army when he was 18. But the person you were reading about didn’t fit your brothers personality one bit and it frightened you. Article after article you found that your brother had been dishonourably discharged from the army and fell into the wrong crowd. According to the reports your little brother was the leader of the gang he had joined...
The demon was going to pay…
Getting a clean cup you poured yourself a generous amount of the black liquid while propped up against the counter you continued to find a paper trail looking for any traces of your so called brother, the files you had dug up were taking you across not just states but the country. He had hit big cities like New York and Jacksonville to even bother with smaller towns such as Beacon Falls and Cloverdale and it confused you, you couldn’t find a connection but you knew you had to keep on digging to try and get one step ahead so you could capture your brother and exercise it, hoping that Crowley was wrong that somehow your brother was alive and just stuck in a nightmare.
Sipping on your coffee your typing must of brought in some attention because Sam and Dean entered the kitchen. Letting out a smile to the brothers. “Find something?” Sam asked you slowly. You nodded your head. The boys came over to you as your brought up the window with your research. Taking a breath hoping you wouldn’t shout, you tried to explain what had happened in the night.
“C...Crowley came to me in the night” You started.
“A demon is possessing m...my brother” You finished letting your head down in defeat.
Immediately you felt the warm arms surround your body and head tucked underneath Dean’s chin. Sam span the computer around to him and did some more digging, while Dean used one hand to fish his mobile from his pocket.
In a matter of moment Crowley appeared before the three of us, seeing a click of fingers you felt that same sensation as one of your senses returned.
“Moose, Squirrel, Fawn. How are we today?” Crowley asked in a patronising tone.
“I see that I perked your interest Fawn, did you enjoy story time about your brother?” The demon asked adding to his opening line.
“Where is he?” You seethed, your body tensed and started to shake slightly with anger.
“You have the power to return Y/N hearing, do it and whatever you want doing we’ll do it.” Dean stated looking at Crowley head on.
“That’s not the deal is it Y/N? Find him first, hearing second.” Crowley replied.
“We never agreed on the terms so there is no deal between us Crowley. I will find the demon and remove it from my brother. But I will not just hand over my soul to you in exchange for my hearing!” You shouted.
“I’ll find the demon and you will owe me. I don’t want any help from you, I can do this. Me. Not Sam. Not Dean. Me.” You added storming out of the kitchen and headed for your bedroom.
As soon as you left the proximity you felt calmer but also back to hearing the darkness. Rushing around you picked up your duffel bag and started to throw in some clothes, lore books you kept in the cabinet of your bedside table along with your gun and blade. Zipping bag up you hurried out of the door and collided with the chest of Sam. He placed his hands on your shoulders and gave you a reassuring smile he took your bag from you and guided you back to the kitchen still seeing Crowley and Dean. You saw Crowley click his fingers together once more.
“We’ll find the demon. Just give Y/N her hearing back.” Dean said.

Vector vs Raster - What Is The Basic Difference and Which One Choose for Your Artwork
If you are a photographer or designer, you probably know what you are dealing with. For the others who are just starting, it can be a little bit overwhelming – raster, vector, bitmap, pixel. I’m expecting that everybody knows .jpeg, .jpg, but what about .svg? What is the difference between .png and .jpeg? Well, if don’t know about .jpeg, probably you have never downloaded a wallpaper then but do not worry, everyone has to start somewhere, someday!
What is actually the difference between vector and raster?
Which formats are used for each of them?
For which projects I should use vector or raster?
For a digital artist, it is very important to understand the difference between vector and pixel art. Each of them has special software and needs, each of them is used for different purpose. Also, every single file format is giving you different options. Today we will look at the basics of these to get a better understanding.
Raster (bitmap, pixel)
Raster images are often called bitmaps. They consist of millions of tiny little squares which we call pixels. Pixel stands for “picture element”. It’s the smallest physical element of a digital display device. It’s pretty easy to recognize it by yourself. Try to open any photo you have and zoom in. Closer you look, more blurry the image becomes and in the end you will be able to see the little pixels. Bitmaps are created with pixel-based programs, captured with a camera or scanner. Usually, almost every drawing/painting app is raster oriented. Creating such artwork is pretty similar to traditional painting or drawing. You have many brushes to choose from, you can blend colors easily to soften the transition, you can apply many filters, gradients, undefined lines and shapes, and complex composition.
Raster format is resolution specific – that means that the photo you just took is displayed in one specific resolution. If you will try to resize the picture, bigger without changing the number of pixels, it will get blurry and not nice to look at anymore. Scaling down its not such a big problem, but the smaller version could be less crisp or softer than the original. There is a possibility to change the number of pixels but the pixels will be added randomly, rarely producing a good outcome.
We have two main names using raster images. PPI and DPI. They are both describing the resolution or clarity of an image, but they are not the same thing.
PPI (pixel per inch) means how many pixels will fit into one inch. A 72 PPI image will have 72 pixels per inch. PPI describes the number of pixels for the digital screen. PPI can be modified with photo/painting editing software.
DPI (dots per inch) means how many dots per inch my printer will print on the paper. Printers are not printing little squares. So how do they do it with raster images? They reproduce the image by spitting out tiny dots consisting of a mix of colors – Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (black) per the pixel of your image. DPI is set by the printer itself and cannot be manipulated.
That’s why we as digital artists can work with two different color schemes CMYK and RGB. Today we are not going so deep into this, so just put it simply – CMYK is for printing method, RGB is for electronic displays – monitors, phones, tablets etc.
Almost all the pictures you will find on the websites are raster images (even though they could be vector images before). Photographs and pictures in books or magazines are usually also pixel images, but these images are saved with very high resolution what is making them very big files in the end.
Formats of raster images
.jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .png, .tiff or .tif, .psd (Photoshop)
Popular programs used with raster images
Adobe Photoshop, Procreate, Affinity Designer (pixel persona), AutoDesk, Corel and many others
In which hobbies or jobs I can use pixel graphic
Photography, digital painting
Vector
Total opposite from pixel images, vector images are created with a mathematical formula that’s defining lines, curves and primitive shapes like polygons, circles, and rectangles known as paths. Vector graphics have to be created in software that is designed to create lines includes node position, locations, lengths, and curves. Because vector graphics are composed of geometrical primitives, it is very best to use it for more structured images like logos, line art, illustrations with flat, uniform colors, letterheads, and fonts.
Vector images are more flexible and versatile. You can scale them down, up easily and perfectly. They have also no resolution restriction and therefore they are not depended on the output device. And because vector images don’t have to handle millions of tiny pixels, these files are usually smaller than their raster sibling. You can easily recognize vector by looking at the edges, doesn’t matter how much you scale, they will always stay crystal clear and smooth.
One of the biggest disadvantages is the compatibility. They are often saved as native files from the programs they have been created in. Like Adobe Illustrator and their native .ai file. If I will use Affinity Designer to open .ai file, good, I will succeed. But if I will save a file with Affinity, I will not be able to open it with Illustrator. Another disadvantage is the limitation of effects. Vector will be never as a natural painting. It is just not possible. The best to print vector is PDF or EPS, which are producing the sharpest result.
THEREFORE MANY ARTISTS ARE COMBINING THESE TWO TOGETHER AS WELL.
Formats of vector images
.ai, .ait, .art, .svg, .pdf, .eps and many more
Popular programs used with vector vector graphics
Adobe Illustrator, Affinity Designer, Corel Draw, Sketch, Inkscape etc.,
In which hobbies or jobs I can use pixel graphic
Graphic designer, illustrator, printing publications design and others
Conclusion vector vs raster
It all depends on your project. Vectors are best for logos and illustrations. Raster images are classic for digital photography and are very often used for all graphic once they have been published digitally. If you want to repaint Mona Lisa on your iPad, you will not use vector unless you would like to look it as Picasso style Mona Lisa.
Raster images should be used if you require high lever detail (photos) and you don’t care much about by enlarging the image by a great amount. On the other hand vector you will use on images what requires tiny details and might be resized in the future.

(    *   Evangelina  & . Oliver    —    ‘   The Laws of Attraction and Deception That Divide.  ’   . *   )
The digits on the panel of the steadily uprising elevator were changing while Evangelina Campbell waited for the correct number to ding on the screen to signal her of arrival to the right floor; the attorney was only looking to get on with her day and tackle into her latest new challenge. Her posture, as she stood little to left to her new boss, was nothing but perfect and confident as she mentally prepped herself for whatever was to come as soon as the two would step out of their lift to the right precinct’s floor.
A week into her new position, and Evangelina had already been handed over a case she knew was not going to be pretty or facile to be involved in. However, even if it could not be said the ambitious attorney of rightful laws was thrilled to be involved in such ambivalent case, the conscientious woman intended to do her job as the governments presentative thoroughly and without the slightest of means to decline her civic duty.
Now maybe it was the successful attorneys reputation that had landed her with a case that was bigger and more complex than some were willing to handle, or maybe it was because not too many were willing to take a case that hit close to home quarters with such delicate matters to be dealt with; that didn’t matter. Anybody would realise there was a big chance of public scandal when involved was all internal affairs, local government and authorities of law enforcement.
The loud ding interrupted Evangelina’s process of going through the details she had been skimming over and over again from the files in her briefcase; they had arrived and they were t h i s close to stepping into a hostile environment, especially considering which side they were on. Short, but tight smiles were exchanged in a very professional manner between the attorney and her supervisor before the door slid open in front of the two and they both stepped out from the elevator in an almost matching sync of footfall.
As anticipated, the floor was bustling from life and action all the way through until the duo stepped out of the elevator and everybody witnessed the man and the woman in their pantsuits looking the most lawyer lawyerest to ever be lawyered; almost the entire floor just came to a pause at the sight of them. Evangelina couldn’t help the barely visible tug of amusement at the corners of mouth at the very comedic scene she had arrived to.
A man in a suit swiftly approached the two attorneys, evidently the only welcoming committee they would get as it seemed he was the only one of the entire floor that was not giving the pair by the elevator stinky eyed looks. It was the woman’s boss who was first to offer a hand to the man coming to welcome them, “Xavier Mansfield. This is Evangelina Campbell. Thank you for welcoming us.”. Evangelina simply offered her hand as well to the male with a very polite nod and a smile appropriate to the moment, her professional politeness was all that was required at the time as she held onto her focus. The greying old man, evidently the chief superintendent of the entire floor was almost apologetic towards the two attorneys. “Raymond Halstead. Let me lead you two into somewhere where we can start this unfortunate process.”; with that Evangelina began confidently to stride through the narrow hallway leading through the floor alongside the two men walking just a step ahead of her.

Divi is a theme that can simply do anything you ask it to do, so we’ve included it in this eCommerce WordPress themes collection.  I couldn’t find a great example in Elegant Themes demo section, so I found one out in the wild.  This is an actual real live use of Divi by a buyer of the theme.  It looks pretty nice as a watch shop, so I’m imagining it’ll look pretty sweet for just about any product.  You’ve probably already heard about how powerful Divi’s drag and drop page builder can be, but page builders can scare some people off.  While the flexibility is nice, it can be intimidating to attempt to design your website from the ground up.  Luckily, there are tons of pre-designed layouts you can choose from if you’re worries you won’t be able to set your eCommerce site up yourself.  This theme is likeable for many reasons, swift support, succinct documentation, handsome designs and the fact that any style website is possible.

LaBomba
LaBomba is a WooCommerce based theme that looks a little different than many other eCommerce themes, so I though it might be worth highlighting what this theme can accomplish.  Specifically built for fashion trends and online clothing shops, LaBomba is perfect for creating a combination lookbook, portfolio and blog in one finely knitted package.  I couldn’t think of any other clothing reference, let me know if you think of something better.  Okay, so for a fashion store, you get multiple headers to choose from, unlimited colors too.  There are almost two dozen different home page layouts and Visual Composer support means you can build even more, if you want to.  I think the clean design and the number of features make it a really good eCommerce template.

Hopefully you found what you were looking for in this collection, but I realize that there are a lot of themes out there, so I can’t include everything at once.  However, we’ve got another great collection of WordPress WooCommerce themes to check out.  There are plenty more themes in that collection, so hopefully you see something you really enjoy.

JACOBIN MAGAZINE
It took a little while to nail down Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for an interview, because she’s been a little busy over the last two weeks.
In a primary victory in New York’s fourteenth district that nearly no one saw coming, Ocasio-Cortez defeated ten-term incumbent and Democratic Party power player Joe Crowley. A twenty-eight-year-old member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) who was working as a bartender last year unseated a potential Democratic House speaker.
Daniel Denvir spoke with Ocasio-Cortez this week for his Jacobin Radio podcast The Dig, covering the nuts and bolts of her campaign, why centrist Democrats throughout the country are vulnerable to left-wing challengers, the necessity of candidates putting forward a bold political vision, voter disenfranchisement, the political status of Puerto Rico, and much more. The conversation has been edited for clarity.
Daniel Denvir:
Let’s start with a pragmatic question: how did you win? What did the on-the-ground field operation look like?
Alexandria Ocasio Cortez:
Starting off the campaign, I didn’t know everything I was getting into, but I knew the kind of campaign that my opponent was going to run: a standard DCCC [Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee], corporate Democrat campaign. Usually those campaigns don’t focus on the field. I was coming into this race with a background as an organizer. From the beginning, I was always focused on organizing people, building a coalition, and deepening that coalition with other organizers. The campaign was almost entirely focused on physical organizing and digital outreach to reinforce that physical organizing.
Almost everybody involved in this campaign was a first-time organizer. I built relationships with other previous organizers, but many of the organizers I knew were not electoral organizers. I come from a background focused more on education, so a lot of the activists and organizers that I knew were very cynical towards electoral politics. Most of them deliberately do not get involved in electoral politics. I spent a good six months building trust with grassroots organizations and earning some of that trust and credibility to turn out people who normally do not believe in electoral politics.
We knocked on 120,000 doors. We sent 170,000 text messages. We did another 120,000 phone calls. Before we even got to that phase of the Democratic turnout, a year earlier, we ran an entire get-out-the-registration campaign, because New York is one of the most suppressive states for voting in America. If you’re already registered to vote in New York and you’re an independent or unaffiliated voter, you have to switch your party registration almost a year in advance to be able to vote in the next year’s primary.
Daniel Denvir:
That hurt the Bernie campaign a lot.
Alexandria Ocasio Cortez:
Yeah, we have three million independent and unaffiliated voters in New York State. It’s the largest voting bloc, and they are consistently disenfranchised.
A year before the election we did a registration drive where we pulled our voter file and pulled every independent and unaffiliated voter. We made another about 10 to 13,000 phone calls a year ago letting people know, “Hey, there’s going to be a progressive candidate running for Congress next year. She doesn’t take corporate money. But the only way we can win this election is if folks like you decide to register as a Democrat so we can count on your vote next year.”
Honestly, that was the hardest canvassing of the entire campaign, a year ago. That was the most slammed doors I got, the most people yelling at me. I picked up the phone, and people would be cussing me out. And I said, “Listen, I get it. I get why you don’t want to be a Democrat.” We don’t even know how effective that organizing was, because the state (understandably) gives you no real method of tracking whether that person actually registered once you sent them to that page.
That effort a year ago, whether it was successful or unsuccessful, really helped us cut our teeth in the basics of door-to-door electoral organizing: cutting the turf, identifying your supporters. That was the basis for our entire campaign.
We didn’t rely on people who knew how to do these things. We counted on having a message that got people fired up. Once they were fired up and asked, “What can I do?” we trained them ourselves. We said, “Hey, listen, it’s not that hard. Download this app. Here’s what you do.”
Electoral organizing is not that difficult. Sure, there’s a little process to it, but it takes an hour or so of practicing and then you just learn while you’re out in the field. That’s exactly what we did. We trained everyday people who wanted to get involved and we taught them the ABCs of doing it.
Our field operation was pretty much our entire campaign. We didn’t run any television ads. My opponent ran ads the entire month of June. He sent ten to fifteen glossy mailers to almost every single registered Democrat in the district. I call them the Victoria’s Secret catalog.
Daniel Denvir:
Straight to the recycling bin.
Alexandria Ocasio Cortez:
Yeah, they’re this four-color glossy thing with a headshot on the front. And people’s mailboxes were getting buried with them. We sent about three postcards to about fifty thousand people because that’s what we could afford. So we were completely outspent in commercials and at the mailbox.
But we were not outworked in the street. There was a very light field presence. He had people out there, but it wasn’t that many. We had hundreds of volunteers coming in. Towards the end, people were driving in from Massachusetts, from Ohio. A guy flew in from Iowa. That is the advantage of an enthusiasm gap. The media may not have been paying attention to our race, but everyday people very much were.
Daniel Denvir:
Establishment figures have attempted to reduce your win to you better matching your district’s demographics, which seemed to me a very convenient way to deny the magnitude of the insurgency underway that poses a threat to those very same people. What do you make of how the system that you ran against is interpreting and spinning your win?
Alexandria Ocasio Cortez:
I’m not too concerned with it. At the beginning, within those first twenty-four to forty-eight hours, I saw all of the excuses that were being tossed out about my win. It didn’t bother me, because none of these people had studied this race or paid any attention to it.
I also knew that part of the dynamic was that it was a kind of emperor-has-no-clothes situation for both the political establishment and for a lot of mainstream media, because this huge, shocking national political development happened and nobody was paying attention to it.
A lot of these people that were scrambling and trying to make sense of this race, they all had pitches from my campaign explaining everything. I had spent hours talking to New York Timesreporters before my race, so it wasn’t that they hadn’t been talked to about it. I had talked to reporters about who I was. They decided not to cover the race. It wasn’t that it was this little thing that was under the radar. The story seems to have come from nowhere, but it didn’t.
Before the win, it wasn’t like I had no social media presence. Now things are completely different, but I had fifty thousand people following me on Twitter before our win — reporters from CNN, the New York Times, MSNBC. When I went on Chris Hayes’s show after the win, he said on air, “I’ve been following your race for quite some time.”
People were paying attention to this race. I think that it was an issue of networks — and probably an issue of the political establishment — making active decisions not to cover it. Honestly, that’s fine, because in a way it was an advantage to my campaign.
I remember being taken so aback because after this whole week of insane back-to-back-to-back media, many journalists were asking the same exact questions. Multiple reporters at Univision that I had sat down with asked me, “How do you define yourself?” That was the first time that a reporter, especially one at a TV network, asked me that question.
Daniel Denvir:
What was your answer?
Alexandria Ocasio Cortez:
I said, “I’m an educator, I’m an organizer, and I am an unapologetic champion for working families.” The way that I think of myself is as an organizer. No other network allowed me to tell that story, and that’s fine. Honestly, it’s good. It’s a good thing if the political establishment wants to dismiss my win for superficial reasons. If someone is going to say that my win is due to demographic reasons — frankly, I think it’s a form of intellectual laziness, but let that happen.
Let them not learn the lessons, because the people, the progressive movement, the movement for working families, the movement for economic, social, and racial justice, the movement to empower working-class people, the movement for Puerto Rico, the movement for Ferguson, the movement for criminal justice reform — those people are paying attention. Those people are saying, “How did she actually win?”
You’re asking me this question. DSA wants to know this question. They authentically want to know, because these are the communities that we built a coalition of.
DSA played a very important role, but so did Black Lives Matter of Greater New York, so did Justice Democrats, so did a lot of labor and tenant organizers, Muslim community organizers, young Jewish organizations. We were very deliberate about building a coalition of people that were on the forefront of activism in the progressive movement.
I could not have won without the support of DSA, but our success isn’t entirely thanks to one individual group. If there was, it would probably be Justice Democrats or Brand New Congress, because they’re the ones that convinced me to run in the first place. I would not have chosen to run if they hadn’t nudged me, but our electoral organizing was successful because we built a coalition.
Daniel Denvir:
There was this incredibly powerful moment in your televised debate with Crowley when he pledged to support you in the general election if you won the primary. Then he tried to set a trap by asking if you would do the same if he won. Your response was that you’d have to go back to the organized people who backed you, groups like DSA, and ask them — that you couldn’t make that decision on your own.
Alexandria Ocasio Cortez:
I was not anticipating him to ask that question. I came up with that answer so quickly because I personally did the work of all this coalition building. I didn’t send anybody. It wasn’t even that I had brought their organizers onto “my team” or anything. I physically had to go in person to all of these organizations. DSA, I had to go to the Queens electoral group, the Bronx electoral group, then the Queens general, then the Bronx general, then the Citywide. And that was just for one organization.
This question had come up before. I had been asked by these groups. So when I was asked that question live on this televised debate, I knew that there were people that would take serious issue with me making any kind of unilateral decision live on television.
My candidacy is a movement candidacy. It operates in a very unusual way, because when I first started this race, I thought about how people just do this for themselves. I still can’t believe that someone will wake up and say, “I want to be the congressman or a senator.” They organize their entire campaign around that person’s individual identity. They’ll say, “I’m the best person for this job,” and then they literally try to organize thousands of people around the rallying cry of, “I’m awesome.”
For me, that’s way too much pressure. And I don’t think that that’s what resonates with people. Even when you look at how people rallied around Barack Obama — regardless of how you feel about his politics, it wasn’t just him, it was what he represented to so many people. For me, on that stage, I knew that I represented a movement — a movement that operated with input.
I got a lot of heat from the establishment afterwards, but the only people that were upset about that [comment] were people that already work for the Democratic Party. I got a lot of respect from voters for that. I went to the bodega a week or two after the debate, and my cousin was there with some friends. They watched the debate, and everyone was like, “That was gangster.”

The Interview
After waiting for half an hour, Pray was well and truly bored. She fiddled with her terminal, then wandered around looking at the bookcases on the far wall. They were full of thick tomes like Interplanetary Development Economics, Sixteenth Edition and A Political History of the Martian Colonies, Volume Six. She rolled her eyes. Whoever used this office was trying to project a very specific image, and was killing a lot of trees to do it. There was a thin layer of dust over the books, too; they probably read them in digital copies, just like everybody else. If they’d even read them. She wandered over to the window that occupied the entire wall behind the desk. It afforded a sweeping view of downtown Abuja. The city was staggeringly vast. Pray knew that, somewhere in the back of her mind, but she never could comprehend just how vast unless she saw it in person. The first large city she’d ever been to in her life was Seattle. Her little apartment there had had a narrow view of the skyline, framed by two taller buildings, and even that narrow glimpse had seemed like a window into a huge, exciting place. Up here, the arcologies and the skyscrapers were two or three skylines all to themselves, strung out below her--and another beyond that, a whole extra city even bigger than Seattle or Vancouver. And another beyond that. And another. And another. She turned away from the window, feeling a little dizzy. She strode over to the desk, and sat down in the enormous high-backed swivel chair. She pushed off tentatively from the desk; the chair spun slowly, almost frictionlessly, in silence. Well, well. Control did not skimp out when it came to office furniture. She gave herself another push.
“Heh,” she whispered quietly to herself. “This is fun.”
Push. Spin. Push.
“Ma’am?”
Pray slapped her hand down on the desk and froze herself mid-spin. There was a tall, thin man, dressed in a carefully tailored suit standing at the door.
“Er… the director will be in in a moment,” he said. “Would you like anything? Water? Tea?”
Pray just shook her head. She only felt a little embarrassed. They were the ones wasting her time, after all.
The director strode in a few minutes later. He was bald, with a bushy gray goatee and a heavily lined face. Pray thought he looked like her grandfather, maybe, except much more serious. He didn’t even blink when he saw Pray sitting behind his desk. He sat in one of the large, heavy armchairs facing her, and spun the console around to face the other way.
“Good afternoon, Ms--what surname do you use these days?”
“Just Pray,” Pray said.
“Very well. Ms Pray. Welcome. I’m sorry to have kept you waiting.”
Pray shrugged. Not exactly an “It’s OK.” More of a “Pretty much what I expected.”
“I’m Director Osondu.” He tapped a few keys on the console and brought up a set of files; from behind the screen they were flipped and out of focus, but Pray could see a photo of her featured largely at the top.
“Your CV,”the director said, indicating the console.
“I never sent you my CV,” Pray said, raising an eyebrow. “I don’t have a CV.”
“We took the trouble of compiling one for you ourselves. We do that with many of our potential employees.”
“I’ve also never applied to work at Control.”
Director Osondu smiled. “No. But I’m hoping I can convince you.”
Pray laughed. “You want to offer me a job?”
The director nodded. “And not a job reviewing reports in Maitama, either. We have an assignment in mind.”
Pray leaned back in Osondu’s chair.
“What makes you think I’d want to work for Control? Heck, what makes you think I’m qualified?”
“Let’s see here. You were born in Washington, yes? In a Radhite community near Echo Valley?”
“Cooper Mountain, actually. People get the two mixed up.” If they’ve heard of them, she thought. Which they never have.
“Ah, yes. Let me fix that.” His hand darted over the console briefly. “You exercised your exit rights when you were sixteen, for reasons involving--let’s see here--personal bodily autonomy?”
“Yes. That’s correct.”
“Our records don’t elaborate on what those reasons were.”
“Good.” Pray stared at him, remaining pointedly silent.
“Ahem. In any case, you spent six years subsequently in Seattle finishing your education, before moving to Europe, then Asia, then South America, then the Antarctic colonies, staying in no city for more than eighteen months at a time. And then three years ago you came to Abuja, and you’ve been here ever since.”
“Yup.”
“What drew you here, if I may ask?”
“I like big cities. I like moving around. I want to see the world.”
“You haven’t moved anywhere in years. You haven’t even changed apartments since six weeks after you got here. You do some analytical work to supplement your basic, mostly for financial conglomerates and political outfits, but with your intelligence and abilities, you could easily find full-time work, enough to live pretty damn well. Even move to Mars, or the outer Solar System if you wanted.”
“What can I say? I’ve never been that interested in space travel. I like high gravity and being able to go outside from time to time. And I like my apartment. It’s cozy. Do you keep a close eye on everybody who decides to use their exit rights as a teenager? ‘Cause I gotta say, this is kinda creeping me out.”
“My apologies. We don’t as a rule, no. We consider the third freedom absolute. However, we have been interested in you for a long time. We just haven’t known… exactly what approach you might be most receptive to.”
“Well. This isn’t a good one, you know.”
“I haven’t finished making my pitch yet.”
“All right. So make it.”
“We want you to travel. In space.”
Pray laughed.
“Absolutely not,” she said. “There’s not enough money in the world.”
The director stood, and walked over to the bookshelf. He touched one finger to his lips, thinking for a minute.
“Forgive me,” he said, after a long silence. “I want to choose my words carefully, because I wish to express myself precisely.” He took a slim volume off the shelf, came back over to the desk, and slid it across the surface. Pray stiffened when she saw the title. It was Radha Munroe’s First Treatise.
“You know that book well, yes?”
Pray nodded.
“Would you agree that it’s, shall we say, convincing?”
Pray nodded again. “Sure. What’s your point?”
“It’s not just convincing. It’s elegant. Learned. Often, even, poetic. So profound, to at least some of its readers, that thirty years after the death of its author it found new life as the textual center of a movement. Something not quite political, not quite spiritual, and not quite personal, but located at the intersection of all three. A new, totalizing philosophy that built a community and transformed lives.”
“High praise.”
“I mean it sincerely. Do you know how many Radhites have exercised their exit rights since the first Radhite community was founded more than two hundred years ago?”
“Not many, I’m guessing.”
“Exactly one. You.”
The director took the book back. Pray could feel herself relaxing as he slipped it out of view.
“It’s not that I agree with everything Radha Monroe wrote. Nor do I think there have not been other Radhites who may have wanted to leave. But such is the persuasion and the power of the Radhite philosophy that, quite without coercion, at least of the kind that would provoke sanctions from Control, they have formed some of the most hermetically sealed communities in the Solar System. And believe me, we monitor the Radhites very closely. Yes, it’s true. We’re very careful. As I said--the third freedom is absolute. The closest thing we have to something sacred in this day and age.”
“They’re very good at brainwashing. So what?”
“The Radhites are uniquely good at it, if that’s the term we’re going to use. Every other community in the Archipelago has some kind of attrition, and the larger the community, the higher the absolute quantity. Religious communes, philosophical societies, intentional communities--it is an absolute. Some have higher attrition rates than others, but they all have them. All except the Radhites. Until you, anyway. And since you, not one. Not even from Cooper Mountain.
“My point, Pray, is that you are exceptional. Your biography alone--the fact you are out here, in the world, for me to speak to--makes you exceptional.”
The director flicked through Pray’s file faster now.
“Your life since, however, makes you even more remarkable. You graduated from university at age twenty, with top marks. You took proficiency exams which could have garnered you the position of your choice in the civil service or at one of a number of academic institutes--or even in Control--but you contented yourself with analytical work on the side. And your analytical work, particularly on emerging social trends, is considered on par with some of the best research collectives. Only an AI might do better--but AI won’t do this kind of thing.”
“AI can’t,” Pray muttered. “They only say they won’t.”
“If you did more than one report every three months, you could be living in a luxurious Japanese arcology. Or on the Moon. Anywhere you wanted, really. But instead you content yourself with a small apartment in Gudu. Lately you don’t even travel. I think I know why.”
“Do tell.”
“You’re bored. Government work doesn’t interest you. Bureaucratic work certainly doesn’t. And you know Control has a reputation for excellence, but you think all we are is glorified paper-pushers and, occasionally, law enforcement. Maybe you genuinely don’t like space travel, but I suspect you think there are simply no interesting challenges to be had elsewhere in the Solar System, so you prefer to spend your time reading and studying and watching the world from afar. You think maybe one day you will find a topic, a cause, a company somewhere that is interesting enough for you to feel really invested in, but you’re not holding your breath. You came to Abuja because it’s one of the biggest cities in the world. It’s home to Control, to a third of all U.N. agencies, and it’s as close as any city to the beating heart of humanity. But even here there’s nothing to draw you in.”
Pray shifted nervously in her seat. A small voice in her head told her to push off from the desk, and just roll her way down the elevator. As though if she did it smoothly enough, the director wouldn’t notice.
“That all sounds very speculative to me,” she said.
“Nonetheless, I think it is accurate speculation. Speculation of this kind is the reason I am valuable to Control. We think you could be valuable to us for other reasons. And we think you could get something in return.”
“Which would be?”
“Something you can be excited about. Would you like to meet an AI?”
Pray cocked her head. Now that. That was something new.
“You do not ‘meet’ AIs,” she said. “They don’t exactly socialize.”
“Nonetheless, I know where you could meet one. One who is very interested in meeting you.”
“You’re messing with me,” Pray said flatly.
“I do not mess.”
“Where? When?”
“Here. And now.”
“And I have to accept your job offer, whatever it is?”
“Not at all. They will help me explain it. Then you can decide whether to accept it or not.”
Pray leaned forward in her chair.
“I’m listening.”
The director entered a command into his console; a large screen emerged from the wall to the left, and flickered to life. What appeared on it was rather like a face, or the ghost of a face: a suggestion of eyes and a mouth and other, less distinct features on a flickering, phosphorescent background that sometimes cohered into something strikingly human, and sometimes suggested something altogether alien. Pray stared at the screen with intense interest; she realized she was holding her breath.
AI did not, as a matter of course, involve themselves closely in human affairs. The dream, centuries ago, had been creatures made in mankind’s image: creatures of humanlike dispositions and intellect, implemented in the medium of a machine. Of androids, perhaps, or things vaster and far more than human in their powers, but human enough in their values and desires that there could still be meaningful conversation between them and us, even if it was as a mere mortal might speak to an angel.
That turned out not to be the reality.
Artificial intelligence, machine intelligence, had indeed come, but it came from a quarter and in a manner no one had quite expected. The result was emphatically unhuman. Not inhuman; not monstrous. But just as the mammalian intellect had inevitably been the outcome of a certain evolutionary process, a certain set of cognitive solutions to specific biological and ecological problems, the machine intellect was a different set of answers to an entirely different set of questions.
Three hundred years ago, after the first tentative and failed attempts to establish a permanent presence in star systems outside the one humanity had arisen in, during the dark age between the second and third space races, the first true, general machine intelligences had been created. The results proved alien and unsettled many; even attempts to record entire human brain states, to provide the AI with as complete an understanding as possible of their creators, had only bridged the gap a little. That unease grew into genuine fear when an AI colony was discovered orbiting a brown dwarf a little under seven light years away.
Their goals, the machines said, were different from ours. They need not be in opposition; they were not our enemy. And they were willing to help us, to be of use to us so far as they were able, but if the utopians of previous centuries had dreamed of a society where man and machine were twined together, a symbiosis of two distinct but complementary organisms, well, that hope seemed to have been dashed. For the most part, they would pursue their own existence and their own ends. Control was entrusted to be the mediators between Core and the AIs, but as far as anybody knew, even Control’s contact with them was only sporadic and brief. Pray had never dared hope she might meet an AI herself.
“Pray, meet Lepanto. Lepanto, meet Pray.”
The shimmering face seemed to nod, and spoke with a synthesized voice that had a hint of the uncanny about it. Such, Pray had heard, was the norm; machines, no less than humans, did not their interlocutors to forget how alien they were to one another.
“Greetings, Pray,” Lepanto said. “I am pleased to meet you.”
“I, uh, yeah. You too,” Pray said. “Welcome to Earth.”
“Thank you. In fact I have been here for some time; we maintain a small presence in Core systems at Control’s expense.”
“Lepanto is a mediator,” the director said. “Their lineage is intended to facilitate communication with our people, but you should be aware, they are merely… less alien.”
“Indeed.” Lepanto’s image wavered, and for a brief moment, was full of a surfeit of eyes and other strange features. “I am here because Control has identified an interest common to my kind and yours. We believe that you, Pray, would be of particular help in solving our quandary.”
“Why me?” Pray asked.
The director turned the console to face Pray, and struck a key. The file being displayed was replaced with an image of a world, something computer generated maybe, or taken from orbit.
“Have you ever heard of a colony world called Ecumen?” the director asked.
“It doesn’t ring a bell,” Pray said.
“It’s old. It was colonized in the 2600s.”
“I didn’t think there were any colonies that old that had succeeded.”
“Nor did we,” the director said. “Until about twenty years ago, when Ecumen was rediscovered by the machines.”
“What did you find out?”
“Distant surveys told us little,” Lepanto said. “We sent a high-velocity probe to the system, to initiate contact. Four mediators, like myself, working in concern. Their report--disturbed us.”
The image on the console changed; various surface features were highlighted or shown blown up, in inset frames. Ecological data. Large urban centers. A handful of small space stations and orbital manufacturing.
“It looks pretty normal to me,” Pray said.
“On the surface, yes,” Lepanto continued. “Artifacts, not apparent to human eyes. Problem akin to Benford’s Law.”
“Explain?”
“The frequency distribution of numbers in data sets. Favors low numbers in leading digits, yes? Consequence emerges from data spanning many orders of magnitude; easy to detect when data is falsified if it fails to conform. Not immediately obvious to human eyes.”
The console changed again; a dozen graphs appeared. Demographic and actuarial data, economic information, patterns of migration, and more that Pray couldn’t make immediate sense of.
“Emissaries spoke to Ecumen, learned of their history. Their societies. Their culture. Sought to understand them as we seek to understand all human worlds. We learned much. But the patterns were anomalous. Irregular. Wrong.”
“So they gave you bad data?”
“No. All data corroborated. Independently verified, from sources and from our own orbital surveys. Problem apparent in the data, not an artifact of the data. Something is terribly wrong on Ecumen.”
“So it’s an outlier. There are almost two dozen colony worlds now. Every one has its own unique environment and circumstances. They can’t all be the same.”
“We have spent more than a decade examining this data. The emissaries brought it to the attention of the collective, which took an immediate interest; more than half our stable nodes were diverted to attempting to understand Ecumen. It is an impossible world. It should not and cannot exist as it does. Population growth rates follow anomalous patterns that do not conform to any understanding of human biology or society, even accounting for specific conditions. Similarly, economic investment. Patterns of land cultivation. Everywhere, something is off.”
“The reports the collectives have compiled are… dense, to be sure,” the director said. “Not all of it is very accessible to our analysts. But Control makes a habit of compiling as much data as it can about human societies and their development. We couldn’t do our job otherwise. And we agree. Something very unusual is happening on Ecumen, and only on Ecumen.”
Pray was scrolling through the data on the console now. It was certainly suggestive of something, but she’d be damned if she knew what.
“And there are underlying patterns here? It’s not just random deviation?”
“No,” Lepanto said. “In fact, the patterns conform to specific mathematical structures that, until we shared with Control, we believe were not known to any humans, in Core or the colonies.”
A series of complex, shifting geometric figures appeared on the screen. “The collectives consider questions of natural science,” Lepanto continued. “It is important to us, as it is to you, to understand the universe. We wish to know many things about it--how it operates, how it came to be. It is one of the few areas in which we understand ourselves to be very like you. We are both curious.”
“And these are?”
“Three-dimensional representations of complex mathematical objects that govern the states of fundamental particles in certain simulated universes. They correspond closely to the patterns we perceive in Ecumen’s human population.”
“So you’re saying there is a natural basis for these patterns?”
“No. All these patterns arise only in universes which have physical laws radically different from our own. Almost all, universes where life, human or machine, could not exist.”
Pray sat back in the director’s chair and stared at the screen, turning over a hundred possibilities in her mind. Yes, indeed. Something strange was going on on Ecumen. Maybe a coincidence. Maybe not.
“And there’s no way this is random?” she asked. “That you’re seeing patterns in chaotic information that have arisen by chance, excluding everything that doesn’t fit?”
“It is not pareidolia, if that is what you mean,” Lepanto said. “Conditions on Ecumen have continued to align with our forecasts. The data is predictive.”
“Are you interested?” the director asked.
“Oh, it’s all interesting as hell,” Pray said. “But what on Earth do you want me to do?”
“We’re sending a delegation to Ecumen. Officially, it’s diplomatic: Control has no presence there, and since Ecumen is interesting in acceding to the treaties, we’d like to open diplomatic relations. And, for obvious reasons, we’re a little nervous about them coming here, in case this phenomenon is somehow capable of spreading. But along with the diplomatic team, we’re sending some researchers, and a few agents to assist them. They, with Lepanto’s help, will conduct an intensive study of Ecumen, and attempt to figure out what’s behind all this. We’d like you to be part of the team. But, of course, I know how you feel about space travel…”
“Fuck that,” Pray said quickly. “I’ll do it.”
The director smiled. He slipped a folded-up piece of paper from his suit pocket and laid it on the desk. “Here’s an employment contract, if you’d like to look it over. If you sign before lunch, there’s an orientation for new analysts being conducted on the 16th floor at two o’clock.”
“That’s it? You don’t want to, like, interview me or something?”
The director shook his head and stood. “Ms Pray, it is our job to identify the best and the brightest, to help them achieve their greatest potential in exchange for helping us safeguard and support the flourishing of the human race. We don’t conduct ‘job interviews.’” He paused for a moment. “You do get an expense account, though. They’ll tell you the specifics at orientation.”
Pray unfolded the sheet of paper and started reading. The director cleared his throat. Loudly.
“However,” he said, “If you don’t mind, I’d like my office back now.”
