Tumblr media
The sound of Y/N’s phone vibrating under her hand woke her up. She lifted her head off of Amelia’s bed, not bothering to look at the caller I.D. and answered.
“Hello?” Y/N’s voice croaked, still full of sleep.
“Ms. Matthews,” a distorted voice spoke through the phone.
Y/N sat up completely straight in her chair, now high alert.
 “Or should I say SSA Y/N Y/L/N.”
“Who is this?” Y/N asked, standing up from the chair and moving outside of the room. She knew exactly who it was but she needed to be sure.
“You know exactly who this is,” the voice responded.
“Landry Stephenson,” Y/N said with a stern tone. “What do you want?”
 “Midnight,” Landry replied.
 “What about it?”
“That’s what you have till before this beautiful gold ring becomes mine, along with your boyfriend.”
The line went dead after that. A small tear of fear pricked in Y/N’s eyes, the phone not coming off her ear as she stood there in shock for a second. She pulled the phone off her ear after taking her second, calling the only person she could think of.
“I got here as quickly as I could,” Hotch said, rushing up the stairs to his office where Y/N stood.
She couldn’t trust Strauss anymore, she needed to go straight to the people she knew would help.
  Her team.
“What’s wrong?” Hotch asked once he came face to face with Y/N.
“I need to tell you where I’ve been,” she said with a shaky voice.
It felt as though she was injured, running off of pure adrenaline. And now it was starting to wear off because her voice began to shake. Hotch closed the door to his office and gestured for her to sit down.
“Strauss sent me undercover at George Town because they’ve been receiving letters about someone in the BAU being stalked. There has also been a recent string of ‘suicides’ that we thought were connected to the case, now I can confirm it is because one of the girls I’ve become close to was a victim last night…”
“Y/N I’m so sorry,” Hotch said sympathetically.
“It’s alright, she’s recovering in the hospital, she made it to my office to get help somehow.”
She took in a shaky breath and looked at the watch on her wrist.
“Okay, I’m going to skip some parts because we need to get the team here as soon as possible. Basically, this girl named Landry Stephenson has been sending letters to us about Spencer and I found out it was her yesterday when I went to Amelia’s dorm to look around and I found hundreds of pictures of Spencer in a small chest. This morning I got a phone call from Landry saying we have until midnight tonight to save Spencer.”
“How do you know it was Landry for sure?”
“Because she addressed me as Ms. Matthews, that was my undercover name.”
Y/N took in a shaky breath and lifted her hand and watched it shake violently. She was starting to have an anxiety attack, she hadn’t had that since the day of the bomb.
“Y/N,” Hotch said, making her tearful eyes look at him. “I need you to breathe okay, breath.”
She took in some deep breaths and let a few tears fall down her face. Her eyes closed and she took a minute to compose herself, letting all her emotions flood out of her so she could focus on saving Spencer.
“Okay, let’s get the team here.”
--------------
“Y/N,” everyone said as they walked into the bullpen, seeing the woman they all missed.
JJ and Penelope ran up and wrapped their arms around her, squeezing her tightly.
“Hey, guys-” she pulled away from the hug and gave others to the rest of the team- “I wish we had time to catch up but we have a problem.”
“Why? What’s going on?” Rossi asked, his brows furrowing in concern.
“Wait, shouldn’t we wait for Reid?” Penelope asked, noticing the Boy Wonder’s absence.
“That’s why we’re here. This morning Y/N received a phone call from Landry Stephenson, the unsub Strauss sent her to find who had been killing students at George Town and stalking a member of the BAU, that member was Reid,” Hotch relayed the information Y/N had told him to the team.
The team had slack jaws at the news.
“So, is he okay? Is he in protective custody?” JJ asked, her words quick and strong.
“When I got the call, Landry told me we had until midnight to find him,” Y/N said, her voice shaking again.
“Oh god…” Penelope muttered, clutching her hand to her chest.
“What other information do you have?” Derek asked assertively.
“Not much,” Y/N let her head drop in shame.
The team stayed quiet for a second, watching as Y/N sniffled as a way to keep in her tears. “I have a wealth of knowledge to be applying to this case right now about behaviors of violent stalkers, tactical recovery strategies-” she choked on a sob at her next words- “victim survival odds, things I know about the unsub. But I can’t keep a straight thought for more than four seconds at a time, so I’m the dumbest person in the room.”
The team watched in sympathy as Y/N cried during her speech. They knew he was the love of her life and she was his. They were Spencer and Y/N. “The greatest love I’d ever seen,” as Rossi put it. So they knew, this was tearing her apart because she was putting all the blame on herself.
“Please-” her voice cracked- “we need to find him.”
“This technically isn’t our case, but Spencer is a part of this team,” Hotch said as everyone stayed quiet. “This is going rogue not only for Y/N but for all of us, we could lose our jobs. Does anybody want to leave?”
 No one answered.
 “Good, then let’s get started.”
-------------
“Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while deeply loving someone gives you courage,” Y/N mumbled under her breath as she paced back and forth in Penelope’s office. She kept repeating the phrase under her breath like a mantra. It’s a quote by Luo Tzu that she found during her time away. It’s what kept her going from being away from Spencer and only being able to talk to him every so often.
“Hey,” Derek whispered, walking into the office that was only occupied but Y/N.
Y/N ignored him and kept repeating the quote under her breath.
“Y/N.” Derek stepped in front of her and grabbed her shoulders. “We’re going to find him.”
“Yeah,” she nodded and wrangled her hands together. “It’s just this is all my fault. If I had pushed harder, maybe Strauss would have gotten him sooner or even put Landry in custody and then we wouldn’t be here right now and I could be back on the team and everything would be great and be normal. Spencer and I would be together and would be happy and hopefully engaged-”
Y/N’s blubber of ‘what if’s’ was cut off by Derek.
“Hey, hey.” He grabbed her shoulder and gave her a slight shake. “Wonder Woman we are going to find him and stop this.”
She nodded and fell into his chest, just needing a hug now. He wrapped his arms around her shoulder and held her for about a minute.
“Let’s go to the round table room, we got all the letters that were sent from Strauss,” Derek said, beginning to lead her to the door.
“How did she take the fact I didn’t come to her first?” Y/N asked while wiping the last of her tears.
“Not well at first, but I think she understood eventually.”
When they reached the round table room, the team was sitting all around it, copies of the letters that were sent scattered between them.
“This is clearly a classically possessive stalker,” Derek said as he finished one of the letters he was reading.
“Yeah, one who craves validation and recognition,” Blake added.
“Yeah, she’s asking here ‘why won’t you see me?’, ‘do you think you’re better than me?’, within the five letters this comes up again and again,” JJ said as she flipped through her copies of the letters.
“Five?” Y/N asked from her seat across the table.
She had been silent for most of the time in the room. Her knees pulled up to her chest and her forehead resting on top of them.
“Yeah, there’s five,” JJ responded showing Y/N the letters.
“No, no, that can’t be right, when Strauss sent me out there was only four,” Y/N let her feet hit the ground as she reached for her copies of the letters.
Sure enough, another latter had been sent since she was undercover. It came in yesterday.
“This got here yesterday,” Y/N pointed out.
“How do you know?” Rossi asked, flipping to the same letter she had in her hand.
“Because this is talking about the attack on Amelia,” Y/N said as she kept reading the letter swiftly.
“Who’s Amelia?” Blake asked quietly, not wanting to make Y/N jump at anyone in her frantic state.
“She’s a girl I’ve been counseling undercover, we’ve gotten really close, yesterday she was attacked.” Y/N kept reading through the graphic description of the attack, trying to not let it get to her as she looked for ideas where Spencer could be.
“Here, here, she talks about how she did this for him,” Y/N blurted when she finished reading over a line in the letter, pointing to the spot. “She was killing these people so that the team would come and investigate.”
“Well, we have her motive for the killing, also probably for the suicide she’s also talking about,” Blake said as she pointed out another thing in the letter. “Here it says, ‘when I find you I’m going to kill you than myself’.”
“Murder suicides the ultimate ‘I love you’ to these guys,” Rossi remarked.
“Do you know when Landry started targeting Spencer?” Hotch asked, turning to look at Y/N.
“No, no, I just know she was in one of Blake’s linguistics classes, probably saw him guest speak, and…” she trailed off from there, not wanting to say the rest, knowing that the team knew it.
“Oh my god guys, I found Spencer,” Penelope blurted when a ping went off on her computer. “Well, not found, but I have video surveillance of him in Union Station last night, being drugged and carted away by the unsub.”
The team quickly crowded around Penelope’s laptop and watched the video. Y/N stayed rooted to the ground she stood on, not being able to watch the video.
“Alright, Morgan you and JJ go to the station where Reid was taken, see if anything was left as a clue, Blake and Dave, go to Spencer and Y/N’s apartment, see if there’s anything there,” Hotch ordered and the team began to stand up straight and grab their coats.
Hotch then turned to Y/N, still rooted in the ground and not moving. “How clear is your head?”
“Uh, I’m not sure, not really clear,” she stuttered, eyes staring at Spencer’s empty seat at the round table.
“I want to talk to Amelia about Landry but I need you there.”
Y/N nodded her head but didn’t move just yet.
“Y/N,” Penelope said, stopping her as she began to turn.
“He wears the ring you know, never takes it off.”
 “I know.”
------------
“Amelia?” Y/N asked softly as she entered the hospital room.
Amelia looked up from the book in her hand to see Y/N approach with Hotch behind her. “Hi, Y/N.”
“Amelia, this is Agent Hotchner, he works with me at the FBI, um he needs to ask you some questions.”
“Hi, Amelia,” Hotch said, walking closer to the side of the bed.
Y/N took a step back to watch.
 “Hi,” Amelia responded.
“So Landry Stephenson is your roommate correct?” Hotch asked, starting off his questions.
 “Yes.”
“Does she have any place she would go beside your dorm?”
“She talked about her boyfriend’s place a couple of times,” Amelia answered after a pause for her to think.
 “What’s his name?”
“Uh, I think she said it was Edmond,” Amelia shrugged. “She rarely talked about him, when she did, it was almost like she was imagining it.”
Y/N then had a flashback to when she walked into her’s and Spencer’s apartment one time. She remembered looking over to see a boy walking into his apartment a little down the hall, Landry by his side.
“Hotch,” Y/N stepped up getting his attention.
He turned his head to look at her.
“I know where the boyfriend lives.”
------------
“This bitch,” Y/N deadpanned as she walked up the stairs to the second floor of the apartment building where her and Spencer’s apartment lived. She walked swiftly up the stairs and down the hallway, bypassing her apartment that Rossi and Blake had just been in.
“Y/N, slow down,” Hotch said, catching up to her.
“She was right down the hallway from us, Hotch, how the hell do you expect me to slow down,” she seethed as they came to the apartment of Edmond Rayes.
“Let us handle it,” Hotch put his hand up, stopping her from knocking on the door.
She nodded, still furious that she was this close to them this whole time.
“Edmond Rayes,” Derek said, pounding on the door. “FBI.”
Rossi pulled his badge out of his pocket and held it to the peephole. A second later, the door opened and revealed Edmond Rayes, with a stitched up forehead.
“FBI?” Edmond asked the common thing most people say when the FBI knocks on their door.
“What happened to your head?” Rossi nodded to the large gash.
“My ex pushed me into a mirror,” he answered, moving his body open to let the four of them in.
“That ex wouldn’t happen to be Landry Stephenson would it?” Y/N asked, speaking up for the first time.
“Yeah, how’d you know?” Edmond asked, clearly not recognizing Y/N’s voice from the few times she talked to him. He turned his head to look at her and then he recognized her, “Oh, hey Y/N.”
 “Hi, Edmond.”
“Do you know where Landry Stephenson is?” Rossi asked, getting straight to the point.
 “No, should I?”
“Well, that’s what we were hoping,” Rossi shrugged.
“When did you guys break up?” Derek asked the next question.
“Uh, about three weeks ago,” Edmond answered, pausing to think of the exact timeline.
“And when did you get that cut?” Hotch asked.
“Two nights ago, Landry came back ranting about something she left here.”
Y/N began to wander the apartment, looking all around at the different pictures and figurines adorning the shelves. She wasn’t listening to the interview going on anymore, it just became background noise as she looked at the walls.
But then her ears tuned back when she saw an orange envelope slipped between two books. To the untrained eye, no one would have caught it.
“Edmond,” Y/N said, bringing everyone’s attention to her. “What’s this?”
Edmond cocked his head to the side as he looked at the envelope with Y/N. “I’m not sure.”
He pulled the envelope out from between the books and opened it. He pulled out about twenty photos of Spencer and Y/N walking in and out of his apartment. “I think I found what Landry was looking for.”
Y/N took the photos from his hands, flipping through them to see them all. They went back a couple of months.
“Y/N,” Hotch said nodding to the door of the apartment. Rossi took the photos from her hands as she walked past and followed Hotch out of the apartment.
“This means you’re a part of her victimology now, you know,” Hotch said calmly to her.
“Are you pulling me off the case then?”
 “No.”
“Then let me go back in there to work,” she said, trying to push past him into the apartment. Hotch stuck his arm out and held her back.
“We will but you need a second,” He told her.
“Hotch, I was practically stalked by Caroline for my whole college life, this isn’t new to me,” she reassured him and walked back into the apartment.
------------
“Okay we know numbers on female stalkers are minimal, only ten percent are female,” JJ said as the team sat around the round table again to regroup. Y/N took a seat on the couch behind the table, feeling like she needed to step back to see everything.
“All right, what tops the list of motivators?” Hotch asked.
 “Prior sexual intimacy,” Derek debated.
Y/N barked out a laugh accidentally at the thought. Everyone turned to her with confused glances. “Sorry.”
“Erotomania?” Rossi asked, moving past the moment.
“Maybe,” Derek said. “You slept with me, I’ve built a whole life with us-”
 “No,” Y/N butted in.
 “Y/N,” JJ whispered.
“JJ I know Spencer, we all do, he would not cheat on me, or-or do anything like that.” They all looked at Y/N sympathetically, knowing she was right but they were just saying all the facts. “What’s-what’s the next one?”
 “Celebrity stalking,” JJ answered.
“That one makes more sense,” Y/N said nodding her head.
“How? Spencer’s not famous,” Blake said shaking her head.
“But she was in your class Blake, and when he came to lecture, she became a celebrity to him,” Y/N said.
“That’s a stretch,” Rossi argued. “Celebrity stalkers are usually nonviolent.”
“You want to tell that to John Lennon, Rossi?” Y/N said standing up from her sitting position as she got angrier. “What was it that Mark David Chapman said after he shot him? ‘It was like all of my nobody-ness and all of his somebody-ness collided.’ Well, Spencer is somebody and-and this bitch is a nobody!”
Her sudden outburst made the room get quiet as she paced back and forth. They waited for a second for her to cool down.
“I’m-I’m sorry, I don’t know where that came from,” she apologized as she continued her pacing. “My head’s too clouded, I need to leave, I’m not much help.”
“Y/N, yes, you can be of help,” Derek said, trying to make her calm down. “You have the most communication with the unsub and Spencer.”
“She probably revealed details to you of where she would keep Spencer since she knew who you were,” JJ said in a calming voice.
“I don’t have a memory like Spencer! I can’t remember every damn word she said to me, how-”
“Then pick one of us and we’ll go through each moment with you to help you find out,” Hotch cut her off.
Y/N stopped pacing, looking at everyone around the table. Truly, she would pick Penelope but that wasn’t a part of her job so she settled on someone else.
 “Hotch, please,” she said quietly.
“Okay, let’s go,” He said standing up and leading her out of the room.
------------
“This is where you want to talk?” Hotch asked as the two reached the park that had many chess boards in it.
“It’s where Spencer and I went on our first date, he tried to teach me chess. I need a spot that reminds me of him,” Y/N said as she took a seat at a table. She really sucked at chess, but she knew how to play because of Spencer, but she never beat him.
“Okay.” Hotch took a seat across from her. He then moved a pawn to begin the game. “Try to focus on the board and not my questions, just say whatever comes to your mind.”
“Okay.” Y/N moved one of her pawns.
“When you first think of Spencer what’s the first thing you think of?”
“Home,” Y/N laughed as she moved her chess piece. “He-he makes me feel like home. Warm, cozy, and safe.”
Hotch stayed quiet as he smiled at Y/N. Of course, he knew about their relationship, the whale team did, but they were very private about it. They stayed professional most of the time and no one would assume they were dating if they saw them on the job. This was the first time he really heard about how she really felt about him.
“So if this is a case of celebrity stalking, why do you think she didn’t go after you to get to Spencer?” Hotch asked as he made his next move.
“I’m not sure, to be honest, I wish she did take me instead of him,” Y/N moved her rook. “Maybe she was devolving and her desire to get to him first was too strong so she just...went for him.”
“Maybe,” Hotch moved his knight. “But why would she choose Spencer, in her mind, they must connect somehow.”
 “But how?”
“Maybe Spencer said something in a lecture that had her make a connection?” Hotch moved another pawn.
“Could be…” Y/N moved her other knight.
“When you spoke to Landry, did she mention any of her classes?”
“No, she didn’t really talk much, she would answer yes or no to my questions…”
“Landry, do you have anyone special going on in your life right now?”
“Well, I sent in an article to someone I admire again, and I’m hoping they get back to and like this one more than my last.”
“Oh my god,” Y/N muttered as she remembered the conversation.
 “What?” Hotch asked.
“Months ago, Spencer was helping some students with thesis and articles they wanted to be published. He then asked for input on a ‘Journal of Behavioral Psych’ article. This one student sent in a theory that was completely improbable and stupid, but I couldn’t even tell you what it was. But that same student kept sending in more stuff like it, and Spencer kept politely rejecting it,” Y/N rambled.
“It was Landry that sent in those articles,” Hotch realized. “She wants to be accepted by him.”
“She told me once a couple of weeks ago that she sent in another and was hoping it would get accepted,” Y/N looked up at Hotch with teary eyes. “I didn’t make the connection until now.”
“It’s not your fault, Y/N, okay, come on let’s get back to the office.”
-------------
“Landry Stephenson, along with being a major in Linguistics at George Town, she was working on getting her psychology degree online,” Penelope said as she pulled up a photo of Landry on the screen.
“Do you have the articles she sent to Spencer?” JJ asked.
“Yeah, and like Y/N said, they’re waka-doodle,” Penelope answered.
“Looks like when Spencer rejected her last article, she dropped out of her online classes,” Rossi said as he looked at the papers Penelope handed them.
“Correct,” Penelope said, taking a seat at the table. “I also found an off campus apartment that looks like she stays at on the weekends.”
“Dave, you, Y/N, and JJ take the apartment. Blake and Morgan, take the campus dorm,” Hotch ordered.
“What was the last article about?” Y/N asked quickly before they could leave.
“It says here, ‘How the behaviors of cells change when suicide is inevitable’,” Derek read from the file.
“There’s her suicidal ideation again,” Blake remarked.
“Except that’s not true, why is she so obsessed with it?” Y/N asked. She now understood why Spencer was rejecting her articles, if they were all like this, they were related to her emotionally.
S.W.A.T. busted through the door of the apartment, breaking it off its hinges. They walked in quickly, making sure all the rooms were clear before they could relax and begin their search.
Y/N, JJ, and Rossi began to look around the apartment. Their eyes landed on a wall covered in family pictures and a newspaper clipping about a double suicide. Of her two parents.
“Is this a shrine to her dead parents?” JJ asked as she looked at the wall.
“Her parents committed suicide,” Y/N muttered and pointed to the clipping. “That wasn’t in her file.”
“Uh, guys,” Rossi called from a back room he wandered to. “You might want to come to look at this.”
JJ and Y/N walked to the room quickly. When they entered Rossi had pulled open a small closet door, revealing a bunch more pictures of Spencer.
“Oh dear god,” Y/N muttered as she looked at all the pictures. If Spencer wasn’t kidnapped by this girl right now, she would probably find this humorous.
“She’s watching us,” Rossi nodded to a camera in the corner of the room.
JJ and Y/N turned to the camera behind them to see a green blinking light flashing. JJ quickly pulled out her phone and called Penelope.
“Garcia,” JJ said when she heard her answer.
 “What you got, Mama Grizzly?”
“There’s a webcam in here can you hack the feed?” JJ asked.
“Ohh,” Penelope groaned as she tried to hack the feed. “She’s spoofing the IP address and she’s encrypted the feed.”
Y/N searched around the room, finding a piece of paper and marker. She quickly wrote ‘me for him’ on the page and held it up to the camera.
“What are you doing?” Rossi asked as he watched Y/N write.
“Making a deal,” Y/N responded, finishing the message. The two agents watched as Y/N held the paper up to the camera.
Y/N prayed that this would get her in to find out where Spencer was because they were running out of time now.
After about thirty seconds of Y/N holding up the message, the apartment phone began to ring. Y/N set down the paper and rushed to the phone.
 “Hello?”
“It’s me,” Spencer’s voice said back through the phone.
Y/N let out a breath of relief that he was still alive. “Spence, are you okay?”
“Yeah, yeah I think so,” Spencer stuttered. “I’ve got a concussion and some bruising, but I’m okay.”
 “Can I speak to Landry?”
She heard Spencer take in a sharp breath. “No, she’s listening.”
“Good, I need to meet her, I need to talk to her,” Y/N said, hoping she was playing her cards right now.
“She has a message she wants me to give to you,” Spencer spoke softly, clearly uneasy as his words were slightly slurred.
“What is it, bub,” she hoped using his nickname would give him some strength.
“The message is, she left you a present and if you want to find it, it’s easy as pie,” Spencer’s voice was slurred, almost like he was falling asleep.
“What does that mean? I don’t get that,” Y/N said, rubbing her forehead as she tried to think.
“Neither do I,” Spencer mumbled. “Y/N don’t come, it’s a trap! She’s gonna kill you-”
 The line went dead.
Y/N thought for a moment, then she had a thought. “I need a map of D.C.”
------------
When Y/N, Rossi, and JJ arrived back at the BAU, Y/N had plenty of time to think about the riddle and decipher most of it.
A map was set up on a board when they walked in. She quickly picked up a blue marker.
“We don’t have a lot of time so I’m going to make this as quick as possible.” Y/N took the cap off the marker then began marking things. “This is Landry’s off-campus apartment- this is the nearest tower her phone call to me pinged off of, which means this-” she used a compass to draw a circle around the spots- “is the circle that Spencer was telling me about.”
 “What circle?” Hotch asked.
“It was a clue in Landry’s message, finding her would be as easy as pie, but she wasn’t talking about the food, she was talking about the number Pi.” Y/N wrote the first three digits on the board.
“Pi,” Penelope said and turned back to her laptop to start some calculations.
“Why would she give you a clue?” Hotch asked.
“Spencer has a doctorate in mathematics, so of course she would use math to lure us in because she wants Spencer to think she’s just as smart as me and him,” Y/N relayed the conclusion she had come up with on the car ride back.
“All right, assuming that Landry has a secondary location, wherein the circle would she hold Reid?” Hotch nodded to the circle she drew on the map.
“She’d need a building that would allow for privacy and control, a closed garage for prisoner transfer…”
“If she’s trying to insert herself into Spencer’s life, maybe she has it close your apartment,” Hotch suggested.
“There’s nothing in Landry’s name,” Penelope said after searching with the suggestion.
“Try Y/N’s or Spencer’s,” Hotch said, turning around to look at Penelope.
 “Nope.”
“What about Landry’s parents?” Y/N squatted down next to Penelope as she typed.
“Yes, yes,” Penelope said excitedly as she got a hit. “Landry rented a loft across from your’s and Spencer’s apartment building in her parent’s name.”
“Y/N,” Hotch said, bringing her attention over to him. “I can’t let you be a part of this takedown.”
“We don’t have a choice if I don’t go in there. Spence's dead,” Y/N said, her hands moving aggressively as she spoke.
“And if you do you’re dead,” Hotch told her.
Y/N shook her head. “Hotch, we’ve known from the beginning she’s on a murder-suicide mission, but we didn’t stop to ask why she’s on that mission. We know now, it’s because she wants recognition, the type she believes Spencer can give her and if I go in there I can let her believe she is getting that.”
 “How?”
“Because I’m going to break up with Spencer to do so.”
--------------
The team pulled up to the building with the sirens blaring. S.W.A.T. had already arrived at the scene, ready for instruction from the team.
The team each hopped out of there respected vehicles, guns drawn and ready to save Spencer.
“Hang on, I got a box on the steps,” Hotch stopped everyone, carefully approaching the box.
“That’s the gift,” Y/N said, holstering her gun and walking up to the box.
She picked it up, looking at Hotch to be sure it was alright who nodded. She pulled back the blue lid to reveal a small black velvet box. She pulled it out and opened it, seeing a beautiful ring inside of it.
“Is that a ring?” Derek asked as he inspected it from a distance.
“Take your gun and vest off,” Landry’s voice said through an intercom by the door.
Quickly, Y/N began to strip the vest off her torso and handed her gun and the ring to Hotch.
 “Now come in Alone.”
“Y/N,” Hotch tested, but Y/N didn’t look back at him.
She opened the door carefully and slowly walked up the small set of stairs to a platform. When she reached the top, Landry rounded the corner and cocked her gun.
She walked over to Y/N slowly and grabbed her shoulder, placing the gun to her side. “Walk.”
Landry pushed her down into a chair roughly. Y/N shifted uncomfortably and took a breath, trying to keep a cool front.
When she looked in front of her, she saw Spencer strapped to a chair. “Hi, Spence.”
 “Hi,” he whispered back.
“I was hoping you’d figure out my riddle,” Landry said as she moved behind Spencer, laying a hand on his shoulder. “I mean, I knew you would-” she snaked her hand under his shirt- “The fun was just how fast you did it.”
Y/N watched as Spencer stiffened uncomfortably under her touch.
“It took me a while, if I’m honest, I was kinda distracted by your article you sent in,” Y/N said, hoping she was right about her plan.
Landry pulled her hand off of Spencer and looked at Y/N. “You read my article?”
“I did, the one on the behavior of cells during suicide? I couldn’t agree more,” Y/N lied hoping Spencer, even in his out of mind state, would be able to play along.
“Flattery is not going to get you out of this, because I know what’s waiting for me outside,” Landry said, pointing to the window with her gun.
“I’ve arranged for your freedom,” Y/N bargained, again with a lie.
“The feds don’t make deals with people like me,” Landry stated matter-of-factly.
“Not true, if you have something to help them; Nazi scientists helped with the manhattan project, Mafia bosses are put in witsec, if what you have is valuable enough, they’ll take you,” Y/N corrected her. “That’s why Spencer didn’t want to accept your article because he knew you were right and he was upset he didn’t come up with it first.”
Spencer’s eyes lit in that realization moment that Y/N recognized. He was catching on to the game.
“It’s true after I read it, I was upset I couldn’t figure that out sooner, so I rejected it out of jealousy,” Spencer added, hoping that hearing him say it would allow her to believe it. “And what you have, is valuable.”
“And what do I have?” Landry asked, using her gun to make Spencer’s face look at her.
Please Spence, please say the right thing, Y/N plead internally.
“A brain that doesn’t work with normal societal rules.”
Right on the money, good doctor.
“I’m here because Spencer deserves someone like you, someone with a brain that’s as big and smart as his,” Y/N said, making her move to get Landry to hopefully let her guard down.
When Landry had no response, she spoke again. “Spencer, I’m sorry I don’t love you, I’m breaking up with you.”
Even though it was a lie, it hurt Y/N to say those words. It physically pained her.
“It’s okay, Y/N, I understand, because I chose Landry,” Spencer played into the lie.
Landry whipped her head around to Spencer. “You’re choosing me over her?”
 “Yeah,” Spencer whispered.
“I don’t need her anymore,” Landry said, bringing her gun to Y/N’s head.
“Kill her and she won’t have to live with the fact that I chose you over her,” Spencer said, stopping Landry before she could shoot. “Let her live with her irrelevancy.”
“Fine,” Landry said, getting ready to push her out of the chair and out of the room. “But I just want her to see one more thing.”
Landry walked over, undid the zip ties, and connected her lips with Spencer’s. As best as he could he tried to play into it, but it felt too wrong and he barely even moved his lips.
Y/N just hoped Spencer could play it off long enough to where they could get her outside and arrest her.
“Liar,” Landry said, pulling herself away from Spencer. “Liar!” She pointed the gun at Spencer’s chest but quickly Y/N stood up and reached around her to pull the gun up as Landry fired a shot, missing Spencer completely. Y/N had got the gun out of her hand and it was thrown on the ground.
Landry quickly grabbed a knife off of a table next to her and held it to Y/N’s throat as the rest of the team entered when they heard the shot go off.
“Stay back! Stay back!” Spencer yelled as the team entered the room.
Y/N breathed in deeply as Landry held the knife to her throat. “Landry, Landry, remember what I said, I broke up with him, he’s choosing you, it’s going to take a second for him to be completely ready to kiss you or-or be with you.”
 “Landry-” Spencer tried to plead.
“You didn’t want me!” Landry screeched, the knife coming off of Y/N’s neck slightly.
“I didn’t,” Spencer told her honestly. “But we can still arrange for your freedom.”
“No, you love her and I’ll never be her.”
Y/N quickly reached up and wrestled with Landry for the knife. Somewhere along the line, the knife ended up and Y/N’s abdomen.
Y/N sucked in a breath of pain as Landry pulled the knife out.
A shot sounded off from JJ’s gun and hit Landry in the chest as she turned around.
“Y/N!” Spencer’s voice echoed in the room as he ran up to her body falling on the ground.
“We need a medic!” Hotch’s voice boomed.
He caught her and helped bring her down to the ground, hand pressing on the wound on her stomach.
“I’m okay, I’m okay,” she whispered, reaching a hand up to caress his cheek.
A tear rolled out of his eye, and that was just the beginning of them.
“Hey, bub, I heard you wore my ring,” she said, trying to bring him away from the fact she was just stabbed.
“Yeah, yeah I do,” he choked. He grabbed the hand that was holding his cheek, kissing the back of it, and showing her the ring still on his finger.
“I-I think you got me a ring too,” she whispered as she remembered the ring Landry left for her at the front door that she gave to Hotch.
“I did,” he whispered back, holding her hand clasped against his face.
She smiled softly, beginning to feel her eyes get heavy.
“Hey, hey, sweets, keep those eyes open, the paramedics are almost here,” Spencer begged as he watched her eyes get heavy. “I love you.”
The paramedics pried Y/N out of Spencer’s arms and brought her onto a board, but Spencer kept trying to grab for her.
His sobs racked his body violently as JJ and Derek held him back from running to her unconscious body. JJ shushed his sobs and cries for Y/N as she was taken out of the room and into the hospital.
-------------
“Spencer,” JJ’s voice echoed in Spencer’s head. “Spence.” She shook his shoulder.
Spencer stayed still, not having moved from his position on the ER bed all night as he stared at the same linoleum tile. Y/N had been in surgery for hours and his physical exam to see his injuries had been long done. He came out with a minor concussion and a few bruises like he thought, but his heart was in need of fixing.
He couldn’t move, he couldn’t breathe without knowing if Y/N was okay. If she was alive.
JJ kept saying his name but gave up after her fifth try and had no answer. She settled with placing the ring that Y/N gave to Hotch beside him on the bed.
He glanced down at the ring in its box, then back up at JJ. His eyes watered and then he let the tears fall as he picked up the box.
He needed someone right now to give him a sense of hope, to give him something to hold on to. Because if he didn’t have something, he might lose everything.
“I’m scared,” he admitted to JJ in a whisper.
“Oh, Spence,” she said sadly, wrapping her arms around his shoulder from her standing position. “She’s going to be okay, she’s too strong to die.”
Spencer let out a sob as he hugged JJ back.
In the waiting room, the rest of the team sat anxiously. Derek muttered some prayer to a God he struggled to believe in, in hopes that he might grant some mercy for Y/N.
Rossi prayed to a God he did believe in.
Blake closed her eyes and just hoped.
Penelope sat staring at a random tile on the floor, muttering “She’s gonna be okay” under her breath repeatedly.
Hotch paced back and forth in the room.
Spencer was told by a doctor he was allowed to go to the waiting room with the rest of the team. It wasn’t really a suggestion though, the ER nurse gave JJ a pleading look because they needed the bed for other patients.
“Spence, let’s go see the rest of the team,” JJ cooed, coaxing him up with one arm and leading him to the waiting room.
When they entered the room, each one of them looked up and gave Spencer a sad smile.
Penelope stood up from her chair though, walking over and standing in front of him. She was about to say something, her mouth opening, and closing while she struggled to get the voice out.
But Spencer knew what she meant and just nodded.
Penelope let out a sob and wrapped her arms around Spencer tightly. Her tears were full of fear for Y/N and sorrow for Spencer.
 “Family of Y/N Y/L/N?”
Everyone faced the doctor that walked into the room.
“How is she?” Rossi asked, being the only one who could voice the question.
The doctor let out a breath that was anything but reassuring. “She coded, but we were able to bring her back. She’s out of surgery now but we don’t know when she’ll wake up.”
“But she’s okay?” Spencer asked, needing to hear those words so he could breathe again.
 “She’s okay.”
Spencer took in a breath, finally feeling like he could breathe again.
“Can we see her?” Penelope asked.
“Yeah, follow me,” The doctor said and began leading the group to the room.
In the bed laid Y/N, connected to many I.V.’s and an oxygen tube up her nose. But she was there. Alive and breathing.
Spencer rushed to her side, grabbing her hand and lacing it with his. Tears of joy escaping his eyes.
---------------
Five days. That’s how long Y/N had been asleep for now. Hotch had given the team time off if needed, seeing as Y/N would need them as soon as she woke up.
Each day, a different member of the team would come in and hang out with Spencer. Who stayed there full time. He may have left once to take a shower and a couple of changes of clothes. Other than that, he hadn’t left Y/N’s side at all.
Penelope had brought many flowers, balloons, and baskets in for Y/N. She brought her favorite muffins for when she woke up, pink roses which were her favorite, and many balloons. So many balloons that when Penelope brought in more one day, he made her take some out so the new ones would have room.
Today was Rossi’s day in the rotation for visitation. He had been there a couple of times before, but only for an hour or two, today was his whole day he got to spend there.
“Hey, Kid,” Rossi greeted, handing him a coffee he brought.
“Hey, thanks,” Spencer said, taking the warm drink from his hand.
“No problem,” Rossi smiled, taking a seat in the chair on the other side of Y/N’s bed. “Has there been any changes?”
“No, doctors still don’t know why she hasn’t woken up,” Spencer sighed after taking a sip of the coffee. He looked up to her peaceful face. “I even called London, her best friend who’s a doctor and one of the best hospitals in the US, and she and her colleagues can’t figure out anything.” He took his hand out of her and brushed a piece of hair that had fallen in her face away.
Rossi smiled at Spencer’s gesture, hoping that she woke up soon so he didn’t have to watch Spencer torment himself anymore with staying there.
“How are you holding up?” Rossi asked, concern for the young man who he hadn’t seen outside this hospital in days.
“Alright, I guess,” Spencer answered truthfully.
When a comfortable silence fell between the two, the sounds of beeping coming from the heart monitor beating like a slow metronome in the back, Spencer began to laugh at a thought he had.
 “What’s so funny?”
“It’s not funny at all actually,” Spencer admitted and kept chuckling. “It’s just, um, on day three of her coma, I got mad.”
 “At what?”
“At Y/N,” Spencer laughed, clearly needing sleep. “I was mad because when she left, she left me a letter and a ring, promising me she would come back safely, and now.”
Spencer's laugh soon faltered into a sob. “And now, she’s like this.”
Rossi looked at him with agony, he had never seen Spencer like this. So broken, so upset, so..unknowing.
“Spencer, I know it’s really hard to think of right now, but you have to push through,” Rossi told him, leaning forward in his seat. “You and I know she’s too competitive to die, she won’t let it beat her. Think of it as a time out in the game, she needs a second to figure out her game plan so she can come back and win.”
Spencer smiled at the analogy, reaching for Y/N’s hand again and squeezing it like he had done many times before. What surprised him this time about this time was, she squeezed back.
Spencer’s head jerked up to her eyes to see if hers were open. And low and behold, there they were, sparkling like they normally do and making his heart melt.
“Y/N…” Spencer whispered, standing up from his chair and sitting on the bed. His left hand reached up to caress her head. “You’re awake.”
“She is,” Rossi said with a bright smile, standing up from his seat. “I’m going to go get the doctor.” He reached his hand over the edge of the bed and squeezed her ankle before leaving.
“Thank you,” Spencer said and turned back to Y/N. He let out tears from his eyes as he looked down at the woman he loved with all his heart.
“Hey, don’t cry,” she soothed, wiping his tears away that fell down his face. “I’m okay, see.”
“I know, I know,” he laughed with tears.
He reached down and let their lips mold together. He poured all the emotion he could into the kiss, letting go of her hand so he could use both hands to hold her face. Her arms reached up to the short distance so her hands could cup his neck. His lips tasted like coffee, but they were a pain killer for anything Y/N was feeling right now.
“I love you,” Spencer whispered, his forehead resting on hers when they parted.
“I love you too,” she mumbled with a smile.
“Marry me,” Spencer blurted, pulling his forehead off of hers.
 “What?”
“Marry me.” He dropped to one knee at her bedside, fumbling with the ring in its box as he pulled it out of his pocket. “I know that we have an inconvenient job, and terrible luck-”
“We have the shittiest luck,” Y/N agreed with a laugh.
“We do. But I believe...I believe that with you, I am the luckiest man alive. And there’s no way I could spend my life without you because you are the love of my life Y/N Y/L/N. Every moment I didn’t know you were okay, it felt like I couldn’t breathe. I-I just can’t imagine me without you.”
Y/N had tears pouring out of her eyes now, she loved this man with all her heart and soul.
“So, marry me,” Spencer finished, opening the box to reveal the ring Y/N had seen the other night.
“Yeah,” Y/N whispered, nodding her head furiously. “Yeah, I’ll marry you.”
Spencer’s mouth formed a wide smile as he pulled the ring out of the box and placing it on her finger. She reached up, grabbing her face and connected them in a loving kiss full of smiles and tears of joy.

How many…
How many times have you skipped class? I don’t know. I did it sometimes in college if I wasn’t feeling well or just wasn’t feeling it that day, but only if I knew I could miss that class that day and be fine. Thankfully, the the syllabi always listed what the reading and homework assignments were and I sometimes asked a classmate for their notes.
How many times have you kissed the last person you kissed? Too many times to count over the span of 4 years.
How many years have you known your second closest friend? I don’t have any friends.
How many alarm clocks are in the house? 5. One actual alarm clock and then the rest are our phones.
How many people have you argued with? Only a couple.
How many times have you watched your favortie movie? I have a lot of favorite movies, many of which I’ve seen countless times. How many people do you live with? 3 people and a doggo. How many pairs of boots do you own? 4. How many people have told you they’re in love with you? 0. How many times have you cried over the opposite sex? Too many. How many people have been in your house at one time? Maybe like 20. How many stuffed animals are in your room? A LOT. I have a ton of giraffe stuffed animals.
How many cellphones have you went through? 6 or 7. How many pets do you have? 1.
What would you do if…
What would you do if you could never listen to music again? It would definitely suck. I don’t listen to it all the time, but I do enjoy it and I would miss it.
What would you do if your current bf/gf cheated on you? I’m single.
What would you do if you could never wear jeans again? I haven’t worn jeans in over a year, no joke. All I wear now are leggings. I don’t miss jeans at all.
What would you do if your dad became president? Wow. I have no idea. I would not want that at all because of all that comes with it. He’d be dealing with a tremendous amount of stress and pressure, as well criticism and scrutiny. That extends to his family, as well. We’d all be in the spotlight. Thankfully, my dad has no desire at all to run for president or get involved in politics.
What would you do if you lost your most important possesion? I’d be very upset.
What would you do if your house burned down? Make sure my family, including my doggo, and I got out safely. I’d also try and grab what I could and what I would absolutely need such as medications, phone, laptop, wallet. Whatever else I could. Ahh that would be devastating, though. I obviously couldn’t grab everything and so much would be lost. So many sentimental things.
What would you do if your best friend didn’t want to be friends anymore? I pushed away all my friends and completely withdrew from everyone already. :/
What would you do if you had to move to a different state/province? My family wouldn’t just make that decision without all of us talking about it and figuring it out together.
What would you do if someone shaved your head? Omg. I’d be devastated and extremely angry.
What would you do if Jesus came to your front door? Be in complete awe of even being in His presence and fall before Him. Then I’d invite Him in and show Him hospitality.
What would you do if your house was robbed? I’d be freaking out to say the least if I was home while it was happening. It’d be so scared. If I wasn’t home and discovered it upon coming home, I’d call the cops and see what was done to the house and find out what was stolen.
What would you do if your sister/brother got married? Be happy for them and help them anyway I could.
What would you do if dogs became extinct? Omg. Don’t even say that. We need dogs.
What would you do if the last person you kissed proposed to you? That would be completely out of the blue. I haven’t talked to or seen him in almost 4 years. I’d obviously say no and then be like, dude, wtf??
Have you ever…
Have you ever broke a body part? Yes.
Have you ever broke someone else’s body part? No.
Have you ever changed for a guy/girl? In some ways. Or I tried to, anyway.
Tried to jump on a celebrity but been stopped by the security guards? Wow, no. I’m not a crazy fan like that.
Have you ever complained about the last person you spoke to? Yes.
Have you ever cried on your mom’s shoulder? I’ve cried to her or in her arms many, many times in my life.
Have you ever dialed 911 as a prank? No. I was always afraid of even accidentally dialing it.
Have you ever won a talent show? Nope.
Have you ever spilled a drink on a expensive electronic item and ruined it? Ugh, yes.
Have you ever fainted when someone told you shocking news? No.
Have you ever swooned over the Jonas Brothers? Yep. I was really into them back when they first came out and during the time they were still together. I followed Joe and Nick’s solo careers, as well. Now they’re back together and touring and I want to go.
Have you ever bought a piece of makeup that cost over $100? Hell no.
Have you ever been cheated on by someone who claimed to love you? I’ve never been cheated on.
Have you ever got food free because the waiter thought you were hot? Ha, no.
Do you…
Do you have someone who will always be there for you? My family.
Do you have a membership at a gym? Nope.
Do you act dumb to get guys/girls to like you? Pfft, no. No one should do that.
Do you know anyone who smokes a pack of cigarettes a day? No.
Do you follow the rules? Yeah, generally.
Do you have a friend who secretly really annoys you? No, but I have had friends in the past that did sometimes.
Do you always have Pepsi at your house? No. We always have Coke, Sprite Zero, and Ginger Ale.
Do you flirt with anything that moves? No.
Do you watch SpongeBob? No. I have’t seen an episode in years.
Do you count sheep when you can’t sleep? No. I listen to ASMR.
Do you sweat easily? Ugh, yes.
Do you like pineapple? No.
Do you refuse to wear something that’s out of style? I don’t care. If I like it, then I’ll wear it. I don’t wear things just because it’s “in.” I have to actually like it. I don’t even know what’s in style anyway really anymore. I’m old.
Do you type ‘u’ or 'you’? You.
What is…
What is your best friend’s name? Yolanda. She’s also my mom.  What is your first girlfriend/boyfriend’s name? Derek.
What is your neighbour’s name? I never talk to the neighbors and have no idea who any of them are. What is your least favorite swear word? Cunt.<<< Gahhhh, SAME. I couldn’t even type that, but since the person I got this from did I’ll leave it there. You will never, ever hear me say that word. What is the best and most romantic way to propose to someone? I don’t think there’s a singular best way to propose. That differs for everyone. <<< Yeah, some people want something grand, others want something intimate and lowkey. Just depends. What is something that always makes you laugh? My doggo. What is the name of your hometown? I’ll give you my home state: California.   What is the most gentle way to turn someone down? That’s never an easy situation. You don’t have to be rude or mean about it, but be honest and express how you’re feeling. What is the most boring thing to do? Waiting. <<< What is the funnest kind of question to answer? In a survey? I don’t know, just ones that allow me to elaborate or vent/ramble when I need to. Not just yes/no, one word answer questions.  What is the most useless thing you know? A lot of things probably. What is your favorite pair of pants? All my pairs of leggings. What is the best flavour of ice cream? Strawberry.

hunger - chapter 11
Hunger master post.
Stiles is surprised at how easily he fits in with Scott and Melissa. He doesn’t have that same feeling he did at the foster homes they put him in. Like he had to ask to use the bathroom, and was afraid to help himself to food out of the refrigerator, and he always felt like he was a guest in someone else’s house, always careful of what he said and did, and itching under his skin because he couldn’t just be him. He doesn’t get any of that here. The McCalls’ house is comfortable. It feels like it could be a home. He’s not treated like a guest here. He’s treated like he fits.
He misses his dad.
He misses the dog.
He cries himself to sleep more than once, but it’s okay. It’s grief. It’s not helplessness. His tears are cathartic, not desperate.
He has a pile of clothes that Scott has given him. It’s mostly stuff that Scott is growing out of. Stiles is skinny enough thanks to living on the streets that he fits them. He’s a little taller than Scott so the jeans aren’t quite the right length, but Stiles doesn’t care. Who’s he got to impress anyway?
He does a few chores around the house while Melissa is working and Scott is at school. He wonders how long it will be until it feels like the walls are closing in on him. A while yet, probably. The house is warm and safe. During the day he researches his dad’s case, and wonders if it will raise any red flags anywhere if he tries to order a copy of the transcripts online. Then he figures they’re not really what he needs anyway. He needs the notes from the initial investigation, not the prosecutor’s polished presentation. For that, he needs Rafa McCall. And for Rafa McCall to even think of giving them to him, he needs evidence.
He takes one of Scott’s unused school notebooks and makes a list of what he already knows. Which isn’t much apart from Kate Argent’s name, her brother’s address, G. Argent’s address—are they even related?—and how she shot his dog.
He thinks back to that, trying to divorce himself from the impending panic.
“Hello again, Derek. You don’t look so good.”
Except Stiles’s name isn’t Derek, and as far as he remembers he’s never met Kate Argent before in his life.
Derek.
The name snags in the threads of his memory like a hook, but Stiles can’t quite tug the memory free. He pushes it aside for now.
Stiles makes himself a cup of coffee—the caffeine helps settle the more annoying symptoms of his ADD—and takes it into the living room. He sits down on the couch and reaches for his notebook.
Scott’s laptop is open. Stiles was searching the Herald earlier. The elusive mountain lion still hasn’t been caught.
Stiles taps his pen against his chin, and thinks of Kate Argent again, and the exchange she had with Allison’s dad outside his house a few nights ago.
“I told Dad I’d check and see if you’d had any luck bringing down the alpha. Clearly you haven’t.”
Alpha. What is the alpha? First letter of the Greek alphabet. Term co-opted by asshole meninist PUAs. An episode from season six of The X-Files. And, in hunting terms, the foremost animal in a pack, right? Except that mountain lions aren’t pack animals. So what exactly is Chris Argent hunting?
Stiles sips his coffee.
What the hell is going on out there in the Preserve? Chris Argent is hunting something, and Scott got bitten by something, and all of it, every fucking thing, comes right back to those blackened ruins in the clearing, doesn’t it? Everything comes back to the Hale fire.
Maybe Stiles has been coming at this the wrong way.
Maybe he doesn’t need to prove Kate Argent framed his dad.
Maybe he needs to prove she had something to do with the Hale fire.
***
Stiles likes helping Scott with his homework. He’s missed school. Not the other students or the teachers or whatever, but he’s missing learning. Stiles has always been wired a little differently than a lot of kids. Scott is basically failing Biology, and even though it’s been months since Stiles cracked open a textbook he falls easily back into the rhythm of studying.
“All I know is the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell!” Scott says. “And I learned that from a meme!”
He looks so miserable that Stiles can’t help laughing at him. “It’s okay, Scotty. We’ll make sure you pass!”
“Thanks, dude. I need all the help I can get.”
Stiles chews his bottom lip for a moment. “Are you still hanging with Allison?”
“Yeah.” Scott flushes. “It really sucks that I can’t tell her about you, you know? She said that she keeps driving around town hoping she’ll spot you somewhere.”
Stiles’s breath catches. He tries to smile. “Hopefully not to hand me over to her aunt the cop, right?”
“No.” Scott holds his gaze. “Stiles, she says she hasn’t said anything to her aunt about even knowing you. I believe her.”
“Kate Argent set my dad up,” Stiles says. “Or at least helped whoever did.”
“What?” Scott’s jaw drops. “Seriously?”
“I don’t have any proof,” Stiles says. “But I heard her on the phone to my dad, warning him to drop the investigation into the Hale fire. So I’m guessing that she had something to do with the fire as well.”
“But that was an accident…” Scott trails off. “Wasn’t it?”
“My dad didn’t think so.” Stiles twists his hands together. The knot of anxiety in his gut is growing larger.
“Holy shit.” Scott’s gaze grows distant. “Cora Hale was the year above me in elementary school.”
“I didn’t know them,” Stiles says. “I went to Stuart, not Beacon Hills.”
“Ooh,” Scott teases. “A private school kid! Very swanky!”
“My mom taught there.” He looks down at the open Biology textbook. “We paid reduced fees. It was a Montessori school, which turned out to be a good fit for a kid with ADD plus zero social skills.”
When he looks up again, Scott shows him an encouraging smile.
“Anyway.” Stiles closes the textbook. “I never met the Hales.”
“Cora was kind of scary,” Scott says. “I heard they never found her body.”
Just another thing that never added up about the Hale fire. Why would the Hales hide in the basement after a gas line explosion? And the fire investigator had said that the fire burned at such a high temperature that there was simply nothing to find of some of the bodies. Cora had never been found. Neither had one of the adults. And another one of the kids too. The teenage boy. The brother.
Derek.
Derek.
Stiles scrambles for Scott’s laptop.
Derek Hale. Sixteen years old.
Holy shit.
Stiles finds a picture online of a guy in a Beacon Hills High basketball uniform. A guy who looks absolutely nothing like Stiles.
“Hello again, Derek. You don’t look so good.”
Kate Argent must be crazy, or that’s her guilty conscience speaking.
He wonders, when she has people over, if she can hear a telltale heart beating from under the floorboards.
If she does, it serves her right.
 ***
They order pizza because it helps with homework. That’s a scientific fact. They eat the pizza in front of the TV, which doesn’t help at all with homework.
“So you think Allison’s aunt had something to do with the Hales?” Scott asks.
“Yeah.” Stiles picks off a piece of pepperoni and eats it. “That’s the only thing that makes sense.”
“We should really tell my mom,” Scott says. “And my dad.”
“Not without proof! If we tell your dad, then he’s obligated to do something about me being a missing person. And, you know, wanted by the police.”
Scott sumps back against the couch. “I can’t believe she shot your dog.”
Stiles feels the customary low burn of anger in his gut flare for a moment.
“Sucks, dude.”
Yeah. It really, really does.
 ***
They talk for a while about whether or not to tell Allison what’s going on. If her aunt has links to the Hale fire, than surely Allison is in the best place to try and discover some proof of that? Scott is sure that she can be trusted. Stiles isn’t willing to risk his freedom on that. Scott agrees that it’s Stiles’s call.
Stiles goes to bed just before midnight. He curls up under his comforter and thinks of all the times he sat in the alley with the dog.
Entropy.
Decay.
He has to act.
At the same time, he’s afraid. Everything is already so precarious that he’s terrified to make any move at all.
He tosses and turns for a while. He maybe dozes.
The basement has windows set high in the walls, at ground-level outside. The moon is a half-moon tonight, but bright enough that faint light filters through the windows. It fills the basement with a gentle glow.
Melissa says that if Stiles is allowed to stay, he can have the room next to Scott’s. But for now he shares the basement with the washing machine and dryer, and a shelf full of old board games, Christmas decorations, and assorted junk. He doesn’t mind that everything smells like fabric softener.
Stiles doesn’t think he’s asleep when the basement door opens, but he seems to jerk awake all the same.
“Stiles?” Scott whispers in the darkness. “Are you awake?”
“Yeah,” Stiles whispers back.
Scott’s footsteps creak down the steps.
Stiles sits up. Scott stands in front of the sofa bed. He’s shifting his weight from foot to foot, and even in the dim light he looks pale and wide-eyed.
“What’s wrong?” Stiles asks.
“Can you hear that?” Scott shakes his head like a dog after a bath under the hose.
Stiles listens in the silence for a moment. “Hear what?”
Scott wrinkles his nose, and tilts his head. “Howling?”
Stiles listens again. “Dude, I can’t hear anything.”
“It woke me up.” Scott’s breath is coming in short panicked gasps.
Stiles remembers Melissa checking with him before she went to work that he knew where his inhaler was. “Do you need your inhaler?”
“N-no.” The question seems to distract him from his rising anxiety. He sucks in a deep, uninhibited breath. “No, I think I’m okay.” Then his forehead wrinkles. “How am I okay?”
“Lets…let’s go up stairs and get your inhaler, okay?”
Scott nods. “I think there’s something wrong with me. Really wrong.”
“There’s nothing wrong,” Stiles tells him.
Scott’s huffs out a laugh that sounds as though it’s bordering hysteria. “I can hear you lying!”
Stiles puts his hand over his fast-thumping heart. “That sounds really impossible, Scott.”
“I know.” Scott drags his fingers through his hair. “I know it does.” He freezes suddenly, and turns to stare up at one of the windows.
Stiles follows his gaze.
A shadow passes in front of the window.
“Did you—” he whispers.
Did you see that?
But the words don’t come.
Because when Stiles turns his head to look at Scott again, Scott’s eyes are glowing gold.
Sleep paralysis.
Imagination.
Frontotemporal dementia.
A nightmare.
Except Stiles knows in the pit of his stomach that whatever is happening now is a hundred times more terrifying than any nightmare, because he knows it’s real.
From outside, a howl tears through the night. It’s loud enough and close enough that Stiles feels the echo of it reverberating through his bones. The sound is big enough to swallow the world, and Stiles knows instinctively that he’s powerless in the face of this, whatever this is.
And then it’s gone again.
The shadow passes in front of the window.
Scott’s eyes are no longer glowing.
“It’s gone,” Scott whispers. “Holy shit. What was that?”
And Stiles stares back at him and thinks: What are you, Scotty?

18 "Grey's Anatomy" Storylines That Will Never Not Annoy Fans
It’s just too much ghost sex for one hospital.
When, you know, Meredith pulled the plug on Derek without even telling his family before she did it.
“What the fuck Meredith? What the fuck?” —annastiinap
ABC
When Izzie had full-blown ghost sex with Denny.
“IZZIE HAVING SEX AND BASICALLY A FULL-BLOWN RELATIONSHIP WITH DEAD DENNY! How and why did it go on for so effin’ long before she figured out something was wrong? YOU’RE A DOCTOR. YOU LIVE WITH DOCTORS. YOU’RE DATING A DOCTOR. YOUR BFF’S BF IS A LEAD NEUROSURGEON!” —janessiamariep
ABC
When Arizona cheated on Callie and straight-up blamed her for amputating her leg…even though it saved her life.
“I could understand if they worked some resentment in there, but she 110% blamed Callie for the whole thing. She neglected her daughter, and she blamed Karev for absolutely no reason. And all of this wouldn’t bother me so much if it weren’t for the fact that ARIZONA WAS DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE FOR ALMOST KILLING CALLIE. She was the one who took her eyes off the road. And not ONCE did Callie, or anyone for that matter, ever (rightfully) blame her. So for her to turn into a monster because she was so obsessed with keeping the leg that was killing her when she literally almost killed her wife and their daughter made me honestly hate her.” —zoer48c959dcd
ABC / Via pinterest.com
When — yes, we have to talk about it — the musical episode happened.
“Grey’s Anatomy is NOT the kind of show that can pull off an episode of only singing. It seemed very abrupt and unneeded, and, if you just think about it plainly, singing and a show about medicine and death don’t really mix.” —izdevitaa
ABC
When Cristina didn’t win a Harper Avery award because of the hospital’s connection to the Averys, BUT then Meredith got the same award years later even though she’s in the EXACT SAME situation.
“Cristina was denied her well-earned Harper Avery award because of the Avery Foundation’s ownership of the hospital. They even had doctors leave the hospital because they wouldn’t have a chance to win the prestigious award. But then a few seasons later, Meredith wins with no issue? Still confuses me.” —lilam4aa7abd29
ABC / Via noisyaudience.blogspot.com
The entire Eliza Minnick storyline.
“The entire character and plot line was just infuriating! She came in trying to turn everything around all at once without making a smooth transition. We don’t take well to outsiders rushing in to change everything! And making her a love interest for Arizona just didn’t make sense! There was no real chemistry, and Arizona can and has done so much better.” —amberc40f13f184
ABC
When Erica Hahn repeatedly prevented Cristina from being picked for cardio procedures.
“She completely judged Cristina and didn’t really get a chance to see that the reason Burke gave Cristina so many cardio surgeries previously was because Cristina was freaking phenomenal at them, not just because they were together.” —greysfan220
ABC
When Izzie and George became a thing.
“That made me so mad cause they had ZERO chemistry, and it made Izzie look really bad because George was married to Callie.” —jordans43125d2f3
ABC
And then when Meredith and George hooked up…and she cried during sex.
“Like what?!?” —randomgirl948
ABC
When the show brushed right over the immediate aftermath of the plane crash.
“Can we all just be collectively pissed at how they basically ignored the aftermath of the plane crash? You can’t just make me invest emotional time and energy into Lexie and Mark to go, ‘You know what? We’ll just give you one episode to grieve, name the hospital after them, and wash our hands of this mess. Moving on.’ No. Just no. I wanted to be emotional DESTROYED, DEVASTATED FOR EPISODES, and you let me down, Grey’s.” —erikah466c98908
ABC
And then when we didn’t get a chance to see the aftermath of Derek’s death.
“I hated how they handled the aftermath of Derek’s death. They skipped over it and took us to a year after it happened, giving us no insight on how everyone else at the hospital handled it. Since he was such a big part of the show, I feel as if it was just a big cop out. It could’ve been handled so much better and in so many different ways than the one they chose.” —sarahp46a9a4444
ABC
When Izzie cut Denny’s LVAD wire.
“Dr. Webber let her come back to her job like it was no big deal.” —cristinamoraesf
ABC
When Derek died after stopping in the middle of a freakin’ winding road.
“Not just that Derek died, but HOW he died. You’re telling me that a world-class, highly educated surgeon is going to stop perpendicular on a curved road to reach for his phone? (Which didn’t even have reception during the episode.) Absolutely ridiculous and an injustice to his character!” —chelseaj41a167100
ABC
Everything that had to do with the custody battle over Sophia.
“Why drag us through all the drama of their custody battle just to be like, ‘Haha, never mind, she’s still going to New York with Callie.’ UGH.” —abbyl4b935fbd9
ABC / Via previously.tv
Which means, yes, we have to talk about freakin’ Penny and how Callie literally took off with the woman who indirectly killed Derek.
“CALLIE TORRES LEFT WITH THE FREAKING MURDERER OF DEREK SHEPHERD.” —backonthehorse
Tony Rivetti / ABC
And finally, a more recent one, the fact that Maggie and Jackson are apparently a thing, now.
“Jackson with Maggie? Even if they’re just related by marriage, it’s still awkward. Also Maggie is my favorite character, and I love her and want better for her.” —Steph Pavlic, Facebook
ABC

GARVEZ STORIES
EVERY FAREWELL BRINGS WITH IT A NEW BEGINNING
 Previously
A very loud noise, indeed, more than one. The bang of exploding tires, first the front ones and then the rear wheels. The screeching brakes of the asphalt.
A female voice: -Is everyone OK?-
-Yeah.- another woman, after a break of consultation. Sighs of relief filled the cockpits of both vehicles.
Then a sudden and blinding light. Another danger lurking. Not even time to scream. Again, a cacophony of sounds horrifying. The metal being bent by the impact. The glass that are shattered; some splinters sticking into the skin, causing superficial wounds and bleeding.
 Wheels up
Start a new gig: moaning giving way to genuine complaints.
On its own, separate from others, was hear a broken voice. Far. -Guys, what's happened?-. She doesn't get an answer. She's afraid to try again. But again, the woman speaks through a mobile miraculously survived. -Are you okay? Please give me a sign!-. sob, pulled up the nose, another sob. -Emily? JJ? Rossi? Tara? Alvez? Walker?-. It seems almost a list, a roll-call for only absents. The order isn't really random.
Anything.
Then fingers quickly press the keys, outgoing call -911, what's your emergency? -. No time to let be governed by panic.
-I'm an FBI agent, my colleagues have been hit during a mission, I need at least three ambulances at the address which I'm forwarding to you, NOW! - despite good intentions she yells and screams a bit 'too much.
-We will immediately did. Can you tell me if it was involved a firearm or...?- she stops the operator rudely.
-No, no! I think that it was a car accident but... just before I heard the bang of the tires bursting. It wasn't bad luck, it was deliberate.- she act is found to do the part of the profiler, that she had never wanted to be.
The first thing she hear is a sharp pain in the chest, stretching the length of the chest. At the same time a kind of whining. Soon she realizes that she herself is producing that sound. The head is spinning, because they were overturned.
She opens her eyes and even that tiny gesture causes suffering. Next to her, at the wheel, there's Rossi, unconscious. All at once a groan, but not came from man. -Tara?- she feels her mouth dry, almost the impact had taken away all the saliva. The belts have become a prison. She tries not to panic and follow the procedures, learned too many years ago. She puts her hands on the roof, then with one can press the lock and release. She sighs of relief and gradually let go the grip with her feet. She finds herself sitting crooked. She looks again at Dave, who doesn't move.
Something, maybe her instinct tells her to stay alert. She peers in semi-darkness in search of her gun. She finds the weapon and holds it close to her. Turning back to Tara, still upside down, she makes a sign to remain silent. A thousandth after a blinding light illuminates the road and then the passenger compartment.
She cleans the lenses with the rag, but those salty stains will not go away. Then she off her glasses and she put them on the desk. She looks blinking dot on her screen; fixed, always in the same position. Help is coming. She must think this, or go mad.
-I'm at the airport now, hold on, baby girl. Wait. In a moment I'll be with you.- she nods, but he can't see her. But she can't talk at this time. And it is strange, for she usually begins to rave when they are in trouble.
They knew it was risky. They were talking about this just a moment before it happened the incident. Mr. Scratch is the worse unsub that they had met.
The call ends with a click. But she can't afford to do another cycle of crying. She has something to do.
Slender hands leaf through the pages covered with photos. Others, a bit older and wrinkled, cover the younger hand indicating a particular image. He portrays a man, a woman and a small child, in front of an institutional building.
-Here we had just returned from the science fair, which of course you won.- he smiles and it's funny, his mother remembers a piece of their lives that he, with an eidetic memory isn't able to remember, because it was really too small at the material time. He looks carefully one of the people, more than others.
Dad. I miss dad.
A simple thought for one with an IQ as him. But the woman's fingers shake his. She know it; she feels the same thing.
One annoying vibration forces him to open his eyes. It's his phone. The caller is Penelope. Instantly he understands that something bad happened. He stands up, moving away from the mother so she doesn't hear. Just when he presses the green button he was denied a chance to speak.
-Reid , the team had an accident... I sent the ambulances... no one answers... Derek is coming here... I...- he understands that she is in clear and justified drowsiness. He glances at the blonde woman sat on the couch.
-I'm coming.-
She sees a metallic shimmer. She counts mentally two seconds. She hears Tara's breath and her own, they seem loud as the roar of a plane. She rushes forward and fires five shots in quick succession. She is sure that it's not the help. The watch Rossi leads the wrist says that only within minutes have passed from the accident and not even Garcia isn't so rapid.
She turns to Tara. She's fighting with belts and finally succeeds in.
She gives a kick to the last bits of the window glass, remained precariously together. She tries the door handle of the door, but the latter is deformed, and then fails to open it. Without thinking too much, she comes out straight out of the window, accumulating other scratches.
A pool of blood is spreading under the body of a man dressed all in black.
Behind her she hears Dr. Lewis shouts  -Rossi! Rossi, c'mon!-
Hearing gunshots she feared the worst. Looking out, the glow has enabled her to understand that the victim wasn't one of her team, because it wasn't on the cars but outside.
-Are you all right?- to they it went better. They weren't overturned, but flipped on its side. -Luke?- no movement, however slight. -Walker?- she asks then, but is not likely to get any kind of response.
 The flashes light of ambulances.
The cries of the paramedics.
-There need to intubate! -
-B.P. is dropping!-
-We're losing him!-
Then they are transport on stretchers. People waiting sessions for less wounds serious watch helplessly that show.
-I'm fine, you have to help Walker, Rossi and Alvez!- the protests of one of the three women are settled with any simple gazes. -I said I'm fine, leave me!- she attracts everyone's attention.
-Madam, calm down. You had to be visited as the others. We are taking care of everyone.- the bed continues to wobble. A needle inserted gently into the skin.
Finally, peace and oblivion.
They hold hands as a few days before, when he was finally released from prison. That time he was in need of comfort and support. Today the roles have been reversed. Garcia is a strong person, despite all the tears that she annually weeps. He has never seen her like this. It had never happened something like that, a disaster that involved the safety of the whole team.
She doesn't know what to think, for those she has to pray. This time she can't believe that it happens a miracle and that's will right.
Something, a voice tells her that it's not.
Without even realizing it, she lost consciousness.
-It was a Scratch's trap. I should have thought. I have examined all possibilities.- the brunette shakes her head to self-inflicted reproaches of her boss. A bandage covers her forehead, concealing a deep cut right on her eyebrow arch. Various scratches are scattered all over the face. The hospital gown doesn't take off one gram of her authority.
-Emily, don't say that. At best, it was our mistake. We had to think about any kind of variable. It wasn't your fault.- she repeats, but the other woman ignores her. The brunette runs a hand over her face, feeling tangibly her wounds.
-It was impossible to predict one such thing.- Rossi gives her help, but it's useless.
She keeps looking in the direction of the last bed. Empty.
It was only a moment and no medical intervention was necessary. Never letting go they reach the room where the BAU members are hospitalized. Spencer runs from JJ.
-You already warned Will and the boys?- the blonde asks, without breaking away from the embrace, the computer technician nods.
-I... I called everyone I could. Morgan is coming too... – this doesn’t seem to surprise Prentiss. Not even Rossi, who giggles. When he arrives from the latter he realizes that it doesn’t add up. Someone is missing from the party. The smile goes off on her lips.
There is still another bed in the room. And there's nobody on it.
-Garcia...- she doesn’t remain there to hear an unpleasant story. Before disappearing, she glanced at Reid, who didn’t want to tell her what the doctor had told him while she was "absent".
The others look at her running away, sighing and exchanging eloquent looks.
She washed her face several times with cold water, but every time she raises her eyes on the mirror, she sees a redness on her skin that doesn’t want to leave. She can’t stop crying.
She seems to hear a male voice making her name. She ignores it. But this insists, tries again. Anything. She recognized who these nuances and accent belong to, but it is only her mind that makes fun of her.
Suddenly the hallucination becomes tactile. Soon after a strange noise, like wheels on the floor; a hand is resting on her back. Big, certainly belongs to a man. And hot. She can feel heat even through layers of fabric.
She turns slowly, and he releases his grip.
Sitting in a wheelchair there is special agent Luke Alvez.
-So, what we do?- the brunette went for a moment in the bathroom and when she came out wearing the gear brought by Garcia. Yes, she had thought of everything...
-We can’t do anything right now, Emily...- the paternal and condescending tone of the elder irritates her. She knows perfectly well that this is irrational sensations, but this changes things a little.
-Rossi is right. You have to rest, you are still under observation... – she chases the boy's words with her hand.
-You shouldn’t be here, rather. You should be with your mother. Good heavens, you're just back in freedom and just a few hours ago we freed Diana! What the hell are you doing in the hospital?- everyone has understood the reason for their boss's behavior; nobody takes it too much.
-We are a family, have you forgotten it? We have to stay united.- even the blonde has to add the dose. What no one says is especially at times like these.
Quick disordered flashbacks pass before their eyes.
The attack in New York.  Hotch disappeared.
Garcia in the operating room. -The bullet entered the chest and rebounded into the abdomen. She lost a lot of blood. But we managed to repair the injuries. A centimeter higher and would have crossed her heart but could be discharged in a couple of days.-.
Spencer kidnapped by a bipolar fool. -Dad, don’t do it!... Shut up, son.-.
Savannah hit while she was pregnant. Outside a hospital.
The funeral of Emily. That of the chief of the section, Erin Strauss.
-The superhighway of information is closed.- Elle almost dead.
-We have a case... it concerns Gideon...-.
JJ kidnapped and tortured while she was pregnant. Mateo Cruz, chief of the section, half dead.
Hailey killed by the Reaper. And Jack save by miracle.
The anguish, then the relief. Sometimes only despair that fades too slowly. The pain that becomes a friend to cling to.
There have already been so many times, yet each one is always different. Probability doesn’t mean certainty, but possibility. Hope.
- We must think only of Stephen. We have to pray that everything is going good.-
-Luke?! Oh God! Oh God! You're... you're...- the man understands what she can’t say aloud. He shakes his head, without the shadow of a smile. Then he raises his leg to show her that it's nothing serious.
-It's just a dislocation. Really, Garcia. I'll just have to use crutches for a while.- now he tries to smile to reassure her. The comfort, however, lasts very little.
-Oh, then it's Walker!- for a moment he would like to protest, to say that as usual she would have preferred it was him, the one in danger of life, because he had no one who would mourn his death, while Stephen had a family, wife and sons. He was only the newbie and he would remain forever. But luckily, he manages to hold back and drive away a thought that is so selfish, yet sensible.
-Breath, Garcia!- he tries to take her by the shoulders, but from that position is too difficult. He sees that look she had during the Reid hearing. -It's in the operating room, right now.- thin consolation. That bad presentiment that has haunted her since Prentiss showed her the false message sent to Derek, is now stronger than ever.
-I have to... Oh my God! Monica and the children! They are already arrived? She will need help... - she feels herself missing again. The head turns like a crazy top. The legs are too heavy. She can’t speak anymore. Luke assists helplessly, fearing she may fall, but not knowing what to do. She leans against the wall and takes a breath. -You remember... what you told me?- she just stares him. -Now I want to cry and that someone can stand me while I do.- the tears are already peeping from the pupils and it is clear that she will not accept a no for an answer. Luke smiles sweetly. He doesn’t know how he managed to make such a confession that day. And certainly, she hadn’t taken him seriously. But now it is he who takes his responsibilities. Penelope lowers her height and hugs him. The masculine hands gently caress her back. He trembles, strives not to cry in turn.
A few sentences whisper in her ear, while a hand moves through her hair. -I'm sure you did everything you could, all the necessary calls.- her biggest enemy is herself, and it's always been so obvious. She will never be enough, up to her expectations. There will always be something that she could have done but was not able to. Something to think about. She and Prentiss are very similar. – Stop crying, stop. It's not your fault, Penelope.- and she notices once again how Luke is not Derek. The latter would have allowed her to let off steam until exhaustion. The Newbie no; he wants her next to him at the crime scene; he has the courage to tell her truth that she would prefer (it would be easier) to ignore. -It will not help Walker survive.-
-But why are they putting so much? To wedge a leg, it doesn’t take all this time …- the anxiety has spread throughout the room. Nobody tries to comfort others. Even Spencer gave up after receiving a glare for coming out with one of his quotes. -It says no news is good news.-.
Then the noise of wheels on the floor and the door that opens makes everyone jump. Enter Luke, in a wheelchair. But even more shocking is that to push it is Garcia. They see that she cried, but this doesn’t surprise anyone.
-Are there any news?- he immediately shoots that question, aware that otherwise he will not do it again. Both Emily and Rossi shake their heads. The wait continues. Silence seems almost unreal. Only JJ notices the hand of the former task force agent gently gripping the arm of their computer technician. For a second, she wonders if something has happened between those two and promises to ask her friend. When all this will be another bad memory.
But then the door swings open and this time a doctor enters, still wearing a bloody smock, headphones and a mask. Indecipherable expression. -Are you colleagues of Agent Walker?- so many nodding heads, hands clasping each other, in a gesture of prayer, intertwined fingers. -We have done everything possible, I'm sorry, the head injury was too extensive.- the rest of the doctor's words is confused in their minds.
He can’t really be dead.
We had just met him.
Monica, poor Monica.
It's my fault, my fault, mine. Mine.
After a few minutes the ambassador of misfortunes comes out and no one can even say anything. Penelope glances at the door, but before she can even think of escaping, the hold on her arm tightens and takes her back to her duty.
They are a family, for better or for worse.
The cry of the child lasts very little. Two pairs of arms are already ready to tighten and console him. A couple and a half. -You should not lift weights, have you forgotten what the doctor said?- the husband's sensible words don’t sound good before a mother who just wants to embrace her own fruit. -Honey, let me, I don’t make him fall!- a moment of resistance and then surrender.
She sits on the couch, abandoning herself to dead weight.
-Mummy, do you want me to help you put the jacket?- the blond child with glasses bigger than him make her smile.
-Sure, my love.-
-I know, I know if you could you have been here.- she walks across the room, making the same route.
-I know you, Em, you want to make everyone believe that you're well, being strong enough to overcome anything by yourself... but you're not alone, love, ok? There are me and there are your colleagues. Nobody expects you to be the next Iron Lady.- but she shakes her head.
-Mark, it was my fault, if Stephen died! I'm the chief of this unit... Hotch...- he stops her before she can say other nonsense.
-Don’t say something like "Hotch would not allow it". He is a human being, like you. Such development couldn’t be foreseen.- the man on the other end of the line sighs. He passes a hand on the head. -Listen to me, I'll be there tonight. Okay?- this time she nods, but he can’t see her anyway.
She end the call without adding anything. She sits down, takes off her shoes and massages her feet. She is no longer used to putting on her heels. She far prefers something more convenient and practical.
Trying not to be too brusquely he drives away the woman's hand.
-Mom, enough. So you're suffocating me.- he tries to loosen the tie a bit. He feels strangled. He is having a crisis. It didn’t happen to him for a while. He thought he was already free of stress for having spent six months in prison but reading at the speed of light or having a volcanic mind doesn’t save him from the human emotions of ordinary mortals. In that sphere he is vulnerable, just like everyone else.
One name seems to pass quickly in front of him. Maeve. He feels a caress on his arm. It could be a breath of wind, entered through the window that his mother left open. Before he can even take a step, the new nurse intuits what he is thinking and closes it. Yet that shiver doesn’t go away.
I'm with you, Spencer.
-You're very well dad, really.- a laugh.
The man doesn’t turn around, he continues to admire his reflection in the mirror. He sees all the wrinkles, some white hair despite the color. And yet... not bad. Overall, it could be put much worse.
The female hand rests on his shoulder and forces him to turn around. -I'm sorry to distract you from contemplation, but you'll be late for the ceremony...- he looks at his partner and daughter, their faces both anxious.
That dress he would have preferred to put on another occasion.
She isn’t convinced of her choice, but she doesn’t find anything better. She ponders the stupidity of the need to concentrate negative emotions on clothes that society considers suitable for the occasion.
-Tara?- the man says her name. His tone is delicate, he knows how much her sister is suffering, but she is the strong one, who doesn’t show her weaknesses. She spends her life listening to the thoughts and problems of others, while she doesn’t even consider hers. She turns to look at him. -It's time to go.- he offers her his arm and after a minute hesitation, she accepts.
He fastens his shoes and then look at the bed. The dog is looking at him curiously, bending his head following his movements. -What's up, girl? Don’t you like it?- he using the arms to bring the wheelchair next to the mattress. -No even I wanted to put clothes like that.- he sighs, for a moment losing in his memories.
The bell rings.
He gives Roxy a caress. -She is here.- he announces, the voice a bit trembling. He moves to the entrance and opens the door. A blonde woman, entirely dressed in black, with a hat of the same color on her head, is smiling to him sadly.
-Are you ready?- she asks him, staying on the threshold. The man nods. She turns around and turns back. -We see you later, Roxy.- she greets the dog and then helps him to get off those few steps, then to get on board the car. She puts in the driver's seat. It's a strange thing, it was usually the opposite, but lately, because of the fracture, she was often found in this situation.
-Penelope...- he puts a hand on hers, already on the steering wheel. The woman turns to look at him, tightening her lips. -Are you okay?- she shakes her head, deciding to be honest. -Me too.- he says, intertwining their fingers and giving her a hold. -We will get also through this.-
-Do you think so, Luke? I'm not so sure.- she starts, without breaking the contact. -We go ahead, because there isn’t much else that can be done... as to overcome it... no.- she shakes the head again and she is necessary not to cry, not to ruin the make-up.
Standing in front of that closed coffin, everyone tries to stand up as they can. JJ clings to Will, Rossi to his daughter, Tara and Emily remain close, Reid alone (or almost), with his hands in his pockets, Garcia behind the wheelchair of Luke, a hand on the man's shoulder, that of him on hers, without looking at each other.
In the front row a woman embraces two children, a boy and a girl, who can’t stop crying.
-The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.- a man dressed in ceremonial clothes pronounces in a solemn tone. A priest, a great friend of the Walker family. He baptized Ely and Maya, celebrating the marriage of Stephen and Monica. He didn’t think he would survive that boy who spent his afternoons helping him with the parish, instead of playing the park like everyone else.
The box is lowered, and the pit filled with earth.
It's over another day.
-We need to take that bastard!- the brunette slams a fist on the round table, making the other members of the team jump. That empty chair stands out terribly. -It's my fault, if Stephen is dead.- now her voice seems to come from beyond the grave.
-Emily, it's not true...- the blonde expert in communication tries to contradict her.
-Yes, that is. I'm not just talking about Scratch trap. I let him come here, I wanted him to be part of this group, and now Monica no longer has a husband, two boys no longer have a father... and we've lost a fantastic person. I want the head of the son of a bitch, and I want it before this month ends!- with the last cry, she gets out of the room. With strange glances, the others gradually get up and leave. Only the computer technician and the former agent of the task force remain.
-Do you need help, Newbie?- since the incident she changed attitude, indeed, she took care of him, making him a nurse, helping him in the kitchen, taking Roxy out... basically they attended a lot in the non-working hours and have discovered to appreciate each other's company. Luke has become used too easily in the presence of the woman and at this moment he realizes that when he gets better, everything will return as before and he doesn’t know if he's ready or if he wants it. On the contrary, he knows perfectly well that he doesn’t want to start spending his free time alone. Or without her, which is about the same thing.
-No...- he answers after what seems an eternity. He returns to her own papers. -Penelope...- he finds the courage to call her, the blonde raises her head to look at him, but then her cell phone starts to sing. The man shakes his head and sighs.
-Matt?- she asks surprised. -What?- she turns her back to him, she is distracted for a moment. When she looks around, Luke is gone.
-Welcome to the team, Simmons. I hope you'll help us capture Lewis.- the woman shakes her hand. The man with Asian features reciprocates the grasp and smiles.
-Thank you, Prentiss. I hope so too.-
It's all dark and already the thing appears quite suspicious. JJ gives a boost to the man, forcing him to enter. On her face a strange smile. As soon as he sets foot in the meeting room, the light is rekindled and the sight hits him. The others are also stunned, all except the blonde.
-Surprise!- shouts a voice that he knows well. On the round table there are several glasses already filled with a semi-transparent liquid and even a cake with the word Welcome in uppercase.
The former newcomer can’t hold back a grimace of annoyance. Garcia can’t but celebrate the entry of a person in the team; pity that she hadn’t reserved such a consideration to him. Indeed, all the opposite. He notices with horror that he is jealous of her. Every smile, every minimal gesture that the woman dedicates to Simmons, is unbearable.
He doesn’t even listen to the usual proclamations and so he is taken aback when a female hand is resting on his shoulder.
-Are we going, Luke?- he nods only, fearing what he might unwittingly say.
He opens the door trying to make as little noise as possible. It's night. He doesn’t want to wake his partner. He climbs the stairs moving like a thief or an assailant and the idea almost makes him laugh, risking ruining everything. Arrived at the last step he almost falls due to a toy; he bites his tongue not to say a dirty word.
He opens the door and contemplates his children sleeping for a few seconds, then moves into the bedroom and does the same with his wife. Then he undresses, wears his pajamas and finally slips under the covers.
Sigh of joy.
This is home.
-Are you sure everything's ok?- they're waiting for the elevator together. The ex-newcomer tries to keep his distance for what he is allowed by a wheelchair; he begins to strongly hate this machine. It makes him feel too vulnerable and made him discover what it feels like to have Penelope Garcia in their everyday life, knowing that it will end too soon and that it isn’t enough anyway. -Do you need help later, with Roxy?- the woman asks after waiting for the answer to the first question, in vain. She doesn’t understand his strange attitude of these last hours.
-No.- he finally answers, always closed. She looks up and pretends nothing. Silence, they only hear the buzz of the elevator that is coming. Finally, the doors open. They go up, he avoids her help and Penelope doesn’t know what to think. They remain silent for a few seconds, then she blurts out: -Listen, what's your problem? Say it immediately and let's get it over.- she puts her arms crossed and forces him to look at her.
-Nothing...- he begins in an unconvincing tone. -just that... when Prentiss came back you gave her a toast, Walker… you welcomed him with open arms- he had a hard time saying that name -and Simmons... you gave him a welcome party- she starts to guess where he wants to go, but she lets him end. -I'm the only one who didn’t have this honor.- he closes his eyes and shakes his head, just wanting that the doors open and can go down. In any case he can’t drive, so he will not easily get rid of the woman.
Penelope has a smug smile on her face. -Oh no, no, I can’t believe it!- she exclaims with exaggerated tone and theatrical way. -You are... jealous of the attention I gave to Matt?- it annoys him that she called him for his own name. -You are completely out of it, a little sounder- she warns him that they have reached the parking floor. He pushes the wheelchair outside and heads for his car. -But you know that he has four children?- she emphasizes the number.
He sighs, desperate. He should have found a way to restrain himself, but it's too late now. -Of course, I know, I'm the godfather of the twins.- he confesses. She is so surprised that she stops and stands in front of him to scrutinize his expression more carefully and catch him in the face of a lie. -It's a great friend of mine, we've known each other since the days of the academy...- she starts walking again and then helps him to settle in the passenger seat. He no longer opens his mouth halfway and the blonde decides to respect his colleague's silence. -I've known him for a long time.- he suddenly begins to speak, while they are still at an intersection. -So no, I'm not jealous of him.- she turns to look at him confused.
-But then…- he doesn’t give her the chance to reply and even the light turns green. She press the foot on the clutch, then on the accelerator.
Luke sighs, totally resigned. -I'm jealous of you.- he no longer has the courage to look at her and not even her. -Now, please, if you want me at least a shred of love, don’t say anything, leave me at home, slip away and... forget what I told you.- she nods, but knows she will not.
