#anon I need to rewatch that because it's causing me heart issues

so it's been a few days since you saw waitress, what are your initial thoughts?
thank you so much for reminding me and sorry for being quiet about it for so long, i've been meaning to write this mini essay but i really needed to take a deep breath & collect my thoughts first. so...
sugar, butter, flour... (it's been ringing in my head for days)
i honestly didn't really know what to expect when i started watching it. i knew a little bit about the plot, not that much tho, & i knew who wrote the music for it, the rest was a mystery to me.
i always say the best musicals are the ones that make you cry & this was definitely one of those. it made me feel... so many things at once. so first of all, i think the proshot was absolutely beautiful & i wish we could see more musicals this way. second of all: the characters! all of them so incredibly written & so real!
ok, i am really trying not to be chaotic here, but it's not easy (i've cried multiple times while watching it, ok???). jenna's story completely broke my heart. also, as a person who ended a very toxic relationship not that long ago, i must say i could feel her pain & struggle even more (earl reminded me of my ex so much it hurts, but we are not going there). but she wasn't the only relatable character here, this may be surprising for you, but i literally had a mental breakdown on "when he sees me" cause i found a little bit of myself there (wow, i've got issues)... another song worth mentioning is definitely "she used to be mine" (that was the moment i had to stop watching for a second cause my eyes were so full of tears i couldn't see anything lol). and don't even get me started on "you matter to me"... especially when you think about the ending...
the ending was really surprising for me, but not in a bad way i guess? as much as i wanted a happy ending for jenna, i didn't want it to be all perfect cause that's the thing about life, right? it's never perfect. but she did found herself & her happiness eventually & to be completely honest with you anon, i love a good story that shows us we can be happy without men (even tho it broke my heart a little bit). also, she wasn't left alone. she had amazing friends (another thing that always makes me cry because friendships are so important to me & they are always my favourite part of the plot) & her little daughter! & her own place! & omg i think i'm gonna start crying again...
so, like, you know. i will probably rewatch it pretty soon, i'm also gonna listen to the soundtrack more cause my thoughts are really chaotic at the moment, but overall i think this is such a great musical, definitely one of the best i've seen so far and i am dying to see it live! the choreography was absolutely incredible, the whole cast was amazing, the music was really, really good and the plot made me cry like a baby. this is all you need to know. i loved it so much!!!

rewatching much ado about nothing (as your anon is wont to do) and realized perhaps the most e/o exchange of them all
“for which of my bad parts didst thou first fall in love with me?”
“for them all together”
anon. oh my anon. is that not perfect for them though? elliot and liv have seen the worst of one another. there are parts of both their hearts that make other people turn tail and run. but they don't run from each other, don't demand change from one another, don't expect either of them to be anything other than what they are. and they love, not despite those faults, but i think in no small part because their faults are parallel to one another's. they are safe with one another; they are known.
i don't put a lot of stock in those long posts that make the rounds every now and then about how to write "good." i think good is subjective and we are doing fic for fun and everybody has a different take and different styles and different goals. however, one post i read on that theme has always stuck with me; they were talking about how to create well-rounded characters, and how characters need flaws as badly as they need virtues. and it was talking about how to create realistic flaws, and basically said that sometimes, a lot of the times, flaws are born of virtues. a brilliant character may be combative and vicious when they're proven wrong about something, bc they aren't used to being wrong and see it as a personal slight. a character who is devoted to a cause may neglect the people closest to them, because they are so focused on their own goals. a caretaker may be a liar, because they don't want to burden other people with their problems or upset anyone and so they sugarcoat everything.
and elliot and olivia; are their flaws not born of their virtues? their tempers, their recklessness, elliot's arrogance and liv's commitment issues, aren't those things the end result of their dogged pursuit of justice, their deep well of compassion, their desire to protect other people?
for all of them together; to truly love their virtues is to love their flaws as well, to know there are no good parts without bad parts, to love the entirety of them, and not just the shiniest pieces.

Hey! I was rewatching s3 and the second to last episode got me thinking: we know they sometimes say things that seem casual now but it may be a kind of preview for something happening later. In 03x16 buck is talking with that old firefighter who at the time broke up with his girlfriend because of the distance, and when he said that That was the reason buck seemed surprised like he couldn’t believe a relationship didn’t work because of this. So do you think this is something that may be happening with buck himself (and Taylor) or even Eddie (and ana) ??
hmm interesting question, anon! i do think red's situation was meant to very clearly draw parallels with buck and abby's relationship, most likely to foreshadow abby's return (buck also talks about her with maddie in that ep too). and likewise, we know buck and ali's relationship didn't work because of his job either so i think it's not that buck was surprised that a relationship couldn't work with his job but more that, he'd never envisioned potentially ending up like red at the end of it all
maddie says it herself in 3x16 that after abby and ali buck sort of just stopped trying romantically. and while i think there's nothing wrong with him being completely single in s3 (i think he needed it tbh), i feel like he still always had that vague vision of a family in his future so he never really confronted the very real possibility he could end up alone if he continues to prioritise his job over everything else and not put his whole heart into a relationship
but that's not what you asked so i digress! for eddie and ana, i don't think the job and the distance that can cause is gonna be what breaks them up. i could be wrong and they could use the shooting as an excuse but i'm hoping eddie gets to be the one to end things. and in that scenario i believe it's more what's going on his own head and maybe finally deciding to choose what he wants and not what he thinks he should have that will ultimately end their relationship
as for buck and taylor, interestingly i think it could be both of their jobs that ends them?? or more specifically, their priorities. if absolutely nothing else, taylor has been shown to be extremely career driven and it's clear it's something that means a lot to her. so while her and buck might be able to bond over how much they love their jobs it actually could drive a wedge between them if they find their schedules keep clashing??? or if buck talks about wanting to settle down and have a family and she doesn't want to because her career is taking off
likewise, buddie or not, i do think with the will reveal that there could be some kind of tension or conflict about buck prioritising christopher (and eddie) over taylor and that creating issues longterm. maybe that's me talking with my fic hat on askdjfh but it would make sense after the parallels between eddie and taylor and buck sort of being continually pulled between them in 4x14, y'know???
overall i don't know, but i'm definitely curious to see how 911 navigates everything they set up in 4x14 as we move into s5

Photo I.D.: Screenshots of two anon asks, the bottom image, the first ask, says: “So I've begun rewatching TUA for the millionth time because the world is a nightmare and I need a distraction, and anyway I feel like I'd never really noticed before that Five never has a weapon on his person. Like, in the Apocalypse when he was the literal last person alive he was armed and ready to go, but in Griddy's he goes in unarmed and leaves unarmed. What do you make of that? Is it confidence in his ability to protect himself? Or does it signal he really is over fighting unless necessary?”
The top image, the second ask, says: “Hey! It's me, the person! I'm so excited, muse away!! I just really wanted your take on it because I feel you get how Five's brain works better than any other writer I've seen. Also it just really stood out to me, I guess especially because not only was he taken by surprise at Griddy's (them finding him sooner than he expected) but he could've literally helped himself to any of the weapons now knowing he was already a target. Just interesting. Anyhoo yay I can't wait to see your thoughts!” End photo I.D.
~~~
Right, now I’ve had time to give this proper thought, I’m going to answer this very interesting question in a ramble-y, completely incoherent way!
(Also thank you so much anon ❤❤❤ You’re too kind!!)
Why doesn’t Five carry a weapon in 2019/60s, but he does in the apocalypse?
Age:
Apocalypse Five is, ultimately, a kid.
Things are scary as a kid, and in the apocalypse there are always things moving, breaking, and crumbling all around you. When you’re on your own in the kind of environment with constant periodic noise, it’s really easy to imagine something/someone is there (speaking from personal experience in woods at night - if you give your imagination the chance it will make you believe all kinds of creatures are out there!)
So tiny Five would have been spooked a lot, and for a while probably didn’t realise he was the only person left alive either, so keeping something on him was a reasonable thing to do to keep himself safe.
Side thought: He could also be armed in the apocalypse to kill rats? When we first get to see an apocalypse flashback at the end of s1ep1, a rat runs across the road in front of him, so at least a few survive. And when you kill things like that, you kinda have to gut them, so having a blade on hand to do that with quickly away from camp was probably a must. Yum.
So then he arrives in 2019 and the 60s.
Here he’s an adult, so he knows better than to jump at shadows. This gives him less of a motive to carry a blade for the sake of keeping the unknown things at bay.
Five is, however, also being chased by the Commission. So while this might be a factor into it, it’s probably not the sole reason. That’s more likely...
Mentality and Physical Capability:
Five is, when he pops back into the living world of 2019, far more skilled than his child self ever was.
Evidence: I mean, Five’s probably been bopping around the Academy since he could crawl, however when Five’s trying to show Reginald that he’s ready to time travel, he goes “I’ve been practicing my spatial jumps just like you said!” and then just...blinks to the other end of the table with a pleased “See?!”
Like, boy, that’s one end of the table to the other, that really shouldn’t be the heart of your argument here.
Also is it me or are Five’s kid jumps slower? Am I imagining that? The one at the dinner table certainly is in s1, and comparing that to the dinner scene in s2 with Veginald-Reginald, it looks like he becomes quicker.
2019/60s Five has more time to train and understand his abilities, to the point where he’s completely comfortable with using them in a fight to gain the upper hand.
E.g. Five vs the Swedes, Five vs Lila, the Griddy’s shootout, Gimbel Brothers
Five doesn’t often use his powers to get himself weapons, though, see the examples above.
Instead, he uses them to get himself into the middle of the fight. He could’ve easily swiped up one of the guns at Griddy’s, or have taken one of the guns from the dead Commission agents outside the barn to shoot Lila, but he doesn’t.
I think the reason Five doesn’t carry a weapon is because he is the weapon.
Which, when you think about it, ties nicely into this little exchange:
“You made me a killer!”
“You were always a killer, I just pointed you in a direction.”
Of course, he does take weapons, such as the the axe at the assassination, but more often than not we seen him kill with his bare hands (snapping necks) or with the things around him (his tie, a mop, and a pencil at Griddy’s, a glass dish to stop Diego and Hazel fighting, a metal pole when he fights Lila.)
Actually that probably stems from being in the apocalypse - Using the resources at hand to get you through a situation. There were likely times Five had to quickly bundle things together and work through something fast, so for him it’s probably second nature to just look around his environment and go: cool, what can I use?
Basically: Why would Five carry something to kill when he’s perfectly capable of doing it his damn self?
HOWEVER!
This ask also got me thinking about how Five is extremely reliant upon his powers to help him zip in and out of fights, and when he doesn’t have them the outcome of those fights are often less likely to go in his favour.
See:
Hazel and Cha-Cha find him at Gimbel Brothers - His powers run out, resulting in him being injured and cornered until a stroke of luck lets him hide
The Swedes attack Five at the Majestic 12 meeting - Five gets beaten and flung around like a rag doll, and required Lila’s intervention to save him
Five vs Lila/Five vs Five - These are interesting because they show that, when the odds are evenly matched (i.e. Lila also has the same powers as him, therefore cancelling out his advantage, or he’s against himself), he’s far more likely to struggle and lose (like he did in the barn). With Five vs Five, there was no obvious winner, and if the fight had been allowed to continue it’s probable that whoever came out on top did so out of luck rather than skill.
This is different from, say, Diego, who can just chuck a blade from a distance if needs must.
Not having anything on him means that Five doesn’t have the luxury of getting distance between him and the enemy while still causing damage, making him much more vulnerable at close range when his powers give up on him and has to rely on his strength alone. Again this plays into his resourcefulness with using the things around him.
Actually, this problem was likely less of an issue when he was in his adult body, because despite being older he was more physically capable of matching height/strength/energy. I wonder if Five struggled in the non-power fights we see here all the more because he’s now in the body of a teenager, and therefore has even less to rely on.
As Five says, he ended up in “This twip of a body.”
Conclusion ~ tl;dr ~
Five doesn’t have a weapon because he is the weapon, however he’s super reliant on his powers being part of that, so when they’re gone he’s at risk of being overpowered and taken down.
Conclusion, part 2
Hargreeves get your damn brother like a pointy stick or something jeez
What do u think that will happen on the finale? (With Caryl)
i’ve been away for so long, i thought tumblr had forgotten me, so thanks a ton for the series of questions I think I got from the same anon. i’m gonna answer all here. i also have not even contemplated what could or should happen on twd in ages. i’ve been actively avoiding it for my own piece of mind, but i might be able to start the annual twd rewatch this weekend.
anywayssss, the finale... atm my expectations are seriously low. however, after AK mentioned carol is going on some sort of redemption path, i do believe she is going to talk to lydia, and more importantly, daryl, the person most affected by her destructive behavior. (since carol already made peace with kelly). that’s all i want and need. a whole season of tension built between the 2 leads has to go somewhere.  i do expect some sort of shocking revelation from one of them because of the storm of emotions they both have been hiding from each other for so long. but i don’t expect it to be resolved. it should be more of a to be continued... cause walkers are major cockblocks!!
so next question:  Your perfect heart to heart?
haaaa perfection would be carol finally completely vulnerably talking about her feelings of guilt and self-doubt, anger and grief with daryl. the most honest tearful, painful and liberating exposure of herself to him because she knows he’s her safe place to land. lots of tears and hugs. and then, daryl, not knowing and dreading what might happen to them, just says fuck it, it’s now or never, grow a fucking pair!, and just spills it. a heartfelt, tear soaked profession of eternal love from daryl (1 in 5 billion, 3 words, 8 letters, it’s always been you, she’s more, she’s all) while carol is absolutely speechless like she’s so shocked he could feel that way about her that she’s incredulous and just stares at his face and gets lost in his eyes. AND, something happens and carol can’t say anything and they get separated so daryl is like crushed because he doesn’t know how she feels...
so, next question is perfect: Do you expect a FAKE out death? If so, how would you like it?
YESSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i seriously expect there to be a carol fake death, i will go further, and say a true fucking fuck of a cliffhanger! like you believe carol has resolved all her issues with the people most important to her, and just when she is ready to start living and loving, something tragic happens. everybody thinks carol is dead, daryl absolutely devastated... if they were smart, they would actually do that, and at the end of the credits, extra scene with the major reveal she’s actually alive and, not well, but not fatally wounded. a girl can dream...
... but what i wish would happen is a daryl fake out death! let carol believe it’s over and done and she lost him forever. there’s no second chance or what ifs. just to shock carol out of her fear of loss, and actually show her that if she doesn’t get what she wants right here and right now, there’s no other chance. you gotta live, NOW!
hi! i don’t know if you already answered this (and im so sorry if you did!) but i was just wondering what your favorite and least favorite portrayals of all the skamverse characters were and why?
oh hi anon! i haven’t actually answered this ahahha all day i only answered when people told me their faves and never counted mine. this might take a long time to answer because i have to think and reply so long so sorry for replying late in advance...
eva:
favourite is lisa. she just started the whole thing and she was so real and authentic in her portrayal like everything she did felt so fitting with eva nothing less and nothing more. i would give a special shoutout to ludovica just cause she is my fave eva and i think she added a good comedic acting and edge to her character.
least fave might be alba not because she did so bad but because i didn’t connect with her character much. idk either the acting or the writing didn’t resonate with me she felt a little too plain. but maybe i need to do a rewatch. and anyway she grew on me.
noora:
favourite is nicole. she showed us how much nora faded away and a hollow ghost of her came forward throughout her seasons. the change in nore is apparent even in her posture, her tone.
least fave benedetta. kinda ironic because skamit is one of my top 2 remakes but yeah she didn’t work on me at all in s3. i didn’t buy most of her scenes which is a shame because she was good in s1 and she had good chemistry with the edoardo actor.
isak:
favourite is tarjei, definitely. there was something about his portrayal that made me feel like watching a documentary and no remake reached that level. he was so nuanced and a lot of his emotions were in the little mimics, looks and gestures. axel and michi are a close seconds.
i can’t choose a least fave here. i mean i like all the isaks in their own way. i don’t think any of them were like bad. i wish we got to see florian too. or or if we are counting lucas rubio is a isak remake then alejandro isn’t good as the extra clips show...sorry.
sana:
favourite is tua. she had the heart eyes for mohammed, she had such easy chemistry with him. but then she played amira’s anger and her pain and her pain through her anger in the henna party and the break up with mohammed so well.
least fave ugh maybe assa? this probably has more to do with the writing then her acting but idk there was something there that didn’t communicate her relationship with sofiane or her anger to me.
jonas:
favourite anselm. i literally spent the day praising him...the thing is while michi and lilly are easing into their roles in s1 anselm already seems to portray jonas so well. like he is so relaxed and natural in his role. and then he added a ton to jonas with his softness and his funny side. kudos to the breakup with hanna + coming out scene. with ludovico as a close second because he made giovanni his own too.
least favourite nathan bouts. i swear this has less to do with writing and more with acting. i find him similar to reiky’s jonas and while reiky communicated the loveable asshole vibes to me nathan didn’t. maybe he had better material to play with in s3 it would be different.
william:
favourite is nathan. i might like alejandro's william more as a character but nathan did the best with the not much changed storyline. he literally took the william we saw in og and added so much dimension like the softness with zoe, his voice when he is defending his views, his anger towards his brother chef’s kiss. chris veres is the close second here i mean even his comedic delivery is everything.
least favourite thomas. while trying to have him be this cold, popular guy i think he didn’t actually played well mostly just stood there with no expression. and that’s just no.
even:
favourite is henrik. really shows his power how no one was able to top him yet. i think in praising tarjei we forgot him but like i talked about all day THE LOCKER ROOM SCENE and how much he communicated with his eyes yup.
least favourite maxence. like i said he started bothering me on the rewatches and i realized they relied too much to his looks and natural charm of the actor. i might be biased here about rocco’s acting because i like nicco and marti and nicco so he is not my least fav.
yousef:
favourite is hassan who plays mohammed. maybe it’s because he had more heated arguments with amira about religion and their ‘breakup’ was more painful so i liked his portrayal much more. he just put something into the character like he defended his beliefs with as much fierce as amira.
least fave is lucas nabor who plays dani because spoiler! dani is yousef in skamesp. i will give him the benefit of the doubt maybe by the end of the season i could like his acting more and he does have good heart eyes but right now i don’t vibe with his acting much.
vilde:
favourite is lula. suffered through s6 for her acting’s sake (and for flavie’s) and she is just so good. the pain is in her eyes throughout s6, her breakup with basile was so heartbreaking. but also in earlier seasons she got daphne’s energetic and naive self so well.
least fave is nona who plays amber. idk i don’t vibe with amber and since wtfock cast put a lot into the characters even when writing is bad i think it’s more of her acting issue. it feels like there isn’t anything to her character and amber feels so one dimensional.
chris berg:
(not counting irene here) ah i would say fave is coline. i think she is the chris character that got the most material to play with (maybe why she is my fave) and she did the best out of it. but her scenes in s5 especially the one where she opens up is so nice i could read her emotions on her face.
least fave is nonexistent? i mean most of the time the chris character doesn’t get stuff to act with so like i cannot really judge the actors much when i haven’t seen much from them. and i just vibe with all chris versions.
mahdi:
fave is robin. s5 of skam fr might have gone downhill but robin had a really good performance that only got better throughout the season. especially the ending of the first ep where he looks over the street with his hearing faded away just the look in his eyes wow. honorable mention arda because his little improv lines with louis is amazing. he steals the backgroudn.
least fave again nonexistent because aside from robin and maybe francesco they didn’t get stuff to play with. i mean how can i judge dilan’s actor’s ability?
magnus:
fave is paul. his comedic timing is everything!! and most of that is improv so additional kudos. the way he stole a lot of background moments in s3!!! and s5 and s6 showed how well he could do drama too. when arthur tells him about his hearing the way his face crumbles - wow.
again no least fave because they don’t get material. like i may not like aaron as a character but i cannot say the actor does a bad job when he has to play one side of a character.
i think that about covers everyone!!! naturally i didn’t do anyone from druck or skam france new gen because this was just the versions.
i am so sorry that this is too long......but i cannot just name actors and not explain myself come on. and thanks anon for asking this i enjoyed typing out this a lot!
i also discovered something my fave version of the character doesn’t equal to my fav portrayal always. like nora isn’t my fav noora but she is my favourite portrayal. but jonas augustin and giovanni are my fav jonas characters interchangeably and anselm is my fav portrayal with ludovico following behind.
anyway let me know what you think about my answers!
So what’d you think of the latest rwby episode?
Helloanon-chan. Whelp, I honestly haven’thad a chance this week to rewatch V7CH12 before the finale episode so I’mafraid my opinion still rests the same as it was from my first impressions ofthe episode.
Overall,I pegged V7CH12 as a solid episode. I thought the RWBY vs Ace Ops fight was fine. It didn’t exactly wow me like itdid everyone else personally because I felt that the fight could’ve been overin an instant courtesy of Marrow and his semblance given previous episodes. Howeverit was clear from the get-go that RWBY were going to win against the Acesregardless. It still bothers me a bit that RWBY still believe themselves to bein the right even after all they’ve done this season in regards to deceivingtheir Atlesian comrades. It’s for this reason why I’m not at all mad atIronwood for retaliating against the heroes as he did.
Idon’t like that he’s abandoning Mantle after promising the people and Robynthat he would. But outside of that, I still believe that our heroes deservedtheir comeuppance with Ironwood ordering their arrest after they deceived himfor so long when he gave them his trust from the start. So in the end, forgiveme if I didn’t praise RWBY’s victory over the Aces as much as everyone else.
Frommy perspective, our heroes were wrongand they’re still in the wrong in my books.
Youcan also say that it’s partially for this reason why I want the villains towin. The heroes need another wakeup call to realize the error of their ways.None of them have been moving justly at all. While their hearts might be in theright place with good intentions for the greater good, both sides (meaning bothJNR_QROWBY and the Atlesians) have made poor choices that are going toultimately cause more harm than good. I’m just waiting for the next proverbialpin to drop.
Iwant our heroes to lose since I’m hoping that then they’d finally realize theerror of their ways. Since, like I said, it bothers me so much how RWBY believethey’re in the right after how they treated Ironwood and the Ace Ops. These arepeople who gave you their trust. Who opened themselves up to you and promisedto have your backs if you would have theirs and what do you do with that? Deceive them and then have the gall toact all high and mighty about it?
I’msorry folks but personally I’ve found our heroes’ behaviour to be maddening and out of hand since V6. Andno greater episode highlighted the moralistic issues with that than last week’sepisode. How am I supposed to cheer for these heroes when their actionscontradict their good intentions? I can’t, honestly.
Somesense needs to be drilled back into these heroes. They all need to be remindedthat they are on the same side and they’re supposed to be working together; notagainst each other.
Apartfrom the Ace Ops loss to RWBY, I really, really didn’t like the battle betweenQrow and Clover. Even now I still found that fight to be nonsensical. It bothers me to no end that there was a moment whereQrow straight up fought with Tyrian against Clover. Some folks called it Tyrianmanipulating the situation but…I’m sorry…what? No! Nuh uh. That wasn’tmanipulation. That was just a mess of ridiculous that made the characters look stupid. I have seen other fans try torationalize this fight and I’m sorry but I could not buy any of it.
Givenprevious seasons. Given previous episodes. Given these characters and their pre-establishedrelationships and personalities, this fight made no sense to me at all. Theonly word I can find to describe it is stupid.But then again, this is coming off of my first impressions of it.
Icannot believe that the CRWBY Writers for that episode---Kiersi and Eddy---thought it was a good idea to have Clover andQrow continue to fight each other even after Tyrian had escaped when hiscapture was said to be a major priorityin a previous episode. I’m sorry to the folks who loved that fight and thoughtit was the best thing ever. This squigglemeister didn’t enjoy it.
Ipersonally thought that the Clover vs Qrow vs Tyrian fight was the worse fightin RWBY history based on just how downright foolish it made our hero characterslook. The worse of it all was what it did for Qrow.
Ireally have nothing else to say about that scene than I didn’t like it. Myleast favourite part of the episode.
If I had to rate V7CH12, I would honestlygive it a 5/10. It’s not the worse episode for this season but it did it have itsproblems when it came to what it did for the hero characters---but then again,that’s just me.
I’mcurious to see what the finale episode will do next especially coming off ofthe last episode. Looking forward to it. In the meantime, hope that answersyour question anon-chan and apologies for the late response.
Do you have any tips for writing fanfiction?
Hey, Anon, thanks for the ask and sorry about the delayin replying. I’ve been writing fanfiction for so long that I’ve gotten into abit of a routine with it so I had to have a think about what I actually do. These tipsare based on my own writing practice, experience and approach to fanfic.But I would encourage you to keep asking this question, keep chatting withother authors (some might be kind enough to comment here) as you search for your ownunique writing style and practice. Everyone’s will be different and, as long asit works, I say stick with it. I’m assuming that you’re a new or aspiringauthor so I hope one, some or all of these tips prove useful.
1. Get In The Zone: Find the time of day when yourbest writing happens. For me (rather inconveniently when there’s work to bedone), this is first thing in the morning. For others, I’ve heard it’s themiddle of the day or late at night. But you will know this time when you find itbecause words and ideas will flow freely and easily, faster sometimes than yourfingers can keep up. Revel in this time, use it well then stop writing when theenergy runs out. Nothing good was ever produced by pushing past inspirationinto frustration or exhaustion. That said, inspiration can strike at any time – while watchingan ep or taking a walk or going about your work or trying to fall asleep. When itdoes – whether it’s an opening line, a plot point or snippet of dialogue – jotthose ideas down.
2. Watch (and Rewatch) Your Source Material: Thismay sound obvious (and not much of a chore for a fan) but watching whatevermovie/show/whatever you’re working from helps you to pick up the jargon of thatworld, to absorb the particular milieu, to know the people, places and canon(before you presumably diverge from it). The best fanfic gets both the bigpicture and the little details right. Without these firmly in place, you riskwriting a story that doesn’t ring true to the basic characters, tone orsituation you’re attempting to emulate. You want to extend a reality you love,not break it. So always be on the lookout for any little thing that mightfracture this reality and cause readers to fall out of a world they (you mustassume) know equally well. As a reader, there’s always a jolt when this happens, a dishearteningplummet. So know your stuff before you put pen to paper.
3. Get the Voices Right: Unlike character which canbe ambiguous, changeable and open to interpretation, every fan becomes attuned tothe particular voices of their favourite characters. When reading, you don’t need to work toknow when an author gets this right. You can just hear it. You can also (unfortunately)hear the tiniest slip in consistency and truth. I have written for somecharacters with very distinctive voices, voices I really didn’t think I couldemulate: both Ten and Donna in “Doctor Who”, Jack and Liz in “30 Rock” and,more recently, Gene Hunt in “Ashes to Ashes”. My particular trick for writingthese characters, for practicing their voices, was to write out the dialoguefirst then fill in everything else. Obviously this is only going to work forfics like this, this and this that rely heavily on banter. I love this kind offic. I love reading ‘em and I love writing ‘em. But even in fics which meldprose and dialogue, writing the dialogue out in isolation can help since theseaspects use slightly different writerly muscles.
4. Spellcheck is Your Friend: There will probablyalways be errors in your writing but do your best to avoid preventable andobvious mistakes. These can destroy your credibility as a narrator and takeyour reader out of your story. Personally, I am a compulsive editor. I wouldn’trecommend it. But I would recommend reading through your work at least once andrunning spellcheck before posting. Reading aloud can also help to identify anygrammatical errors or issues with flow. You can, if you find a friend willingto act as beta, outsource some of this work.
5.Don’t Be Afraid to Start Small: I’m a fan of theshort, self-contained fic. I’ve written lots of them and significant work must still go into making them work. So don’t aim to produce 25,000brilliant words right off the bat. Just 1-2,000 solid ones of which you can be proud.
6.Write What You Want: If you’re lucky, readerswill request fics of you (I have never been good at fulfilling these requests).If you’re unlucky, they’ll complain about directions you take or detail whythey refuse to read what you’ve written (this is pretty rare). But you can’t, Ibelieve, force inspiration. It’s either there or it’s not. For me, I beganwriting fanfic because there just wasn’t any for a pairing I shipped. So Iwrote it myself, for myself. I wrote what I liked and wanted to read (I stilldo). This is a medium in which fans have complete autonomy. They choose to go frompassive consumer to active creator. So just do what you do. Do whatever youwant. Turn back time. Bring people back from the dead. Unite lovers. Mergeworlds. Create characters. Make it sad, happy, dramatic or funny or both. You have the power. Claim it. Play with it. Revel init.
7. Start Strong and End Strong: You gotta have agood first line, in my theory of ff. That’s where it (literally) all begins. I always like to openwith something concise and intriguing that immediately communicates a little (butnot necessarily all) of what I’m planning to work with. Don’t be fooled intothinking you gotta start at the beginning. You don’t. You can enter the storyat any point. You can enter late – and leave early, as the saying goes. Thisis a screenwriting principle that ensures that only the most relevantinformation is included in a scene. It keeps the pace of a piece up, controlsthe dissemination of information and keeps audiences engaged. I think thisprinciple transfers rather easily to the page, especially since most of us areemulating material from the big or small screen. In order to imitate thesevisual mediums in written form, you might like to think of paragraphs, breaksand sentence structure as editing techniques that can guide the reader’s pace, growingperception and emotional experience.
8.Avoid Clichés: Clichés can occur at the level ofexpression, character or narrative. At the level of expression, these arewasted words that hold no meaning so find a fresh way to express what you mean.At the level of character, keep words, thoughts and actions rooted in thecharacter. “Show, Don’t Tell” is another well-known writing principle that can help maintain authenticity. As much as we may identify with certain characters, make judiciousdecisions about how much of yourself belongs in them. When writing intimaterelationships, less is often more. I know many shippers (myself included) spendyears sometimes LONGING for couples to express what they mean to each other,physically and/or verbally. By all means, let your beloved characters express –but not everything and not all at once, would be my advice. Allow them to maintainsome sense of mystery and sovereignty. At the level of narrative, clichés canactually work, especially if used with awareness. I had such fun writing a OneBed! fic for Jack and Liz, in which I paidtribute to some of the many reams of MSR fanfiction I had previously consumed.There were so many of these stories in that fandom that they became a categoryof their own, boasting a set of (increasingly ironic) conventions. Some fanfictraditions, it must be said, deserve to be embraced, extended and celebrated.
9. Read: Reading is the easiest way to absorbgrammar, to expose yourself to different writing styles and to become moreadept with language. So read books of all kinds. And read fanfic from your favefandoms. But read it actively, critically. Figure out what works and whatdoesn’t and why. Figure out what you enjoy, don’t and why. Apply theseinsights to your own writing and keep applying them. Keep improving. The more you read and write, the better you’ll get.
10. Avoid Comparisons: My best experiences of readingand writing fanfiction have been in strong, supportive communities. Generally,the more supportive the community has been, the more prolific I have been. These communitiesare wonderful spaces to inhabit, filled with peeps that love their shows,defend their ships and support their authors. Authors are always hungry forfeedback, and is it any wonder? Writing, creating and sharing takes work, love,thought and guts. You have to claim a little corner of a fandom and boldlystate that you have something to say that’s worth listening to. Sadly, you will probably never receive the same amount of energy back as you putin. This can lead to authors comparing their output and input, judging theirwork on its stats rather than on its merits. It can lead to them competing forthose few meagre reviews that roll in. This is partly why it is so important toreview fanfic, particularly fanfic you love and authors you read consistently.It’s part of encouraging and creating a sense of community in which people feeltheir voices are heard and their contributions valued. So be generous with others. Encourage and share. Read, review, reblog.Treat your fellow writers as your community, not your competition. Viewfanfic as a labor of love, an act of generosity that sometimes gives back. And if you don’t get the response you wishfor then make sure you hit that internal heart button and give yourself somekudos for trying, for creating, for loving something and letting it show.
Good luck. :)
lev!anon: HX has been hurt so badly in the past, and no one helped him then, He clawed his way out, stealing and blackmailing and using people's weaknesses. No one gave him anything for free. He doesn't get LQG at all; for LQG, if you're his, he'll be at your house on the weekends to fix the hole in your fence you didn't even notice was there. He'll do what HX says just because it's HX saying it. And if HX asks, he'll just straight up expose his most painful, shameful, secret. (cont'd)
(2/2) Cut his own heart out to lay at HX's feet. Hand him that 把柄. And HX has no idea what to do with someone like LQG. His natural instinct is to take advantage because that's what he does - he sees weaknesses and knows how to manipulate them. But he doesn't need leverage with LQG. Call and he will respond. No game needed. I love the idea that HX lives up to his trust and doesn't ask, doesn't dig. LQG makes it easy - HX's still got a ways to go before he can trust Bingqiu or HC that way.
--
YESSSSSSS lord almighty TTTTT all this talk of BDSM & trust & demonstrations of faith is getting me teary-eyed. okay, i love that image of LQG just popping by HX's to like, change a light bulb that had burnt out? and the first time this happens HX flips into instant alert 'cause Trust Issues™ and that broken light bulb's obviously been planted, what's LQG actually angling for, he knew he should've never trusted these bastards, what's LQG meant to be distracting him from—
and LQG just squints at him running around his entire apartment like a rabid guard dog. It takes a little while for LQG to get it, and he does attempt to explain himself, but by that point HX's a little too amped up to stop glaring, so LQG sees himself out (after getting the light bulb switched ofc) and thinks about how to do better.
fifteen minutes and a camomile tea later, HX's calmed down enough to realize he'd totally overreacted and LQG probably was not lying, LQG can't lie for shit. (He's also checked all his belongings, ofc, and nothing's missing or suspicious.) 有點尷尬可是下不了台, so now he can only grit his teeth and bear it whenever LQG calls him to say, "I'm in your guest bathroom replacing the moldy silicone, if you're going to freak out about it don't come home yet"
(also omg i rewatched the Gone Fishing Job and—the fake argument?? "Hardison go down." "Why are you always telling me to—" "Not like that!!" FNJDNJFNDJFNKD HX AND LQG ARGUING ABOUT THEIR SEX LIFE TO DISTRACT THE GUY WITH THE GUN TRAINED ON THEM
and it's SUCH a good HX/LQG episode flat out. LQG is all about getting HX out of danger bc that's his job, but when HX-as-Mastermind makes the call to go back and destroy the camp, LQG has to readjust his priority to let HX walk back into danger again aaaahhhhhh)
