Where do you think it all went wrong with Riverdale?
honestly, part of me is like, the show's over and nothing but fandom matters. so who cares?
the other part of me loves to complain about Riverdale and will continue to do so until the day I die in the parking lot of Michael's Diner in Montgomeryville, PA at the age of 86. so, long-winded answer under the cut
I'm tempted to say it's the s4 b*rchie kiss. It was so wildly out of character for both Betty and Archie that it's laughable. You know how you can tell when something is just blatantly OOC with no justification? They...don't justify it. They find ways to dance around any interaction that might offer clarification. They mute the reactions of the characters who should be devastated by it. And then they jump ahead 7 years so it's easier to just handwave it away as something that happened a long time ago.
but the thing is, I did keep watching after that. I thought: okay, at least we should get an exes-to-lovers arc out of this, which is one of my favorite tropes. there is no way they would spend 4 seasons developing Bughead as this loving, supportive, communicative, sexy, and almost-unbelievably-compatible couple just to tear them apart and never do anything with that dynamic again. maybe it'll be even sweeter seeing them come back together after so much hurt and longing.
boy was i wrong!!!!!!!!!
so, the episode that actually made me stop watching for good, with the exception of some standalones like The Jughead Paradox and the finale, was the s5 musical. that was when i realized that this team of writers was 100% willing, maybe even eager, to completely drop storylines they themselves had been building over the course of a season - do a 180 with all of the characterization and relationships - and then act as though the buildup they wrote never even happened.
in this case, i'm specifically talking about the Bughead reunion storyline they dropped in s5. i'm not going to pretend like it was a GREAT buildup - and it was mostly on Jughead's side, Betty's character in s5 was basically an emotionless misery bot that had sex sometimes - but it was there. Jughead told Tabitha he had unresolved feelings around Betty. that's followed by an entire episode that lays out Betty & Jug's time jump relationship, and how Jughead still believes she's the one who saves him from himself. they work on a case together, they start opening up to one another. Jughead's so worried about her he can't eat.
and then...you know what happens.
(i'll also note here that there was random bts stuff that strongly indicated the musical ep storyline had a drastic last-minute rewrite: lili tweeted a blue dress, suggesting the song with that line was meant for her character; RAS said cole had to do last-minute recording sessions; supposedly crew members have confirmed this was the case, too. since none of it's 100% confirmed you can take it all with a grain of salt, but i believe it.)
it was so fucking insulting as a viewer to give my time and attention to a show made by people who would not only randomly drop the threads they set up, but torpedo them altogether, and then behave like the fans are the ones somehow at fault for expecting a story that actually follows through on its own emotional and plot beats. we're just shippers, so our opinions are dumb and biased! it's just a tv show, so who cares! get over it!
so, i stopped watching, because i knew they would continue to write without any thought or respect for their characters or their audience, and therefore inevitably write themselves into another corner. and, shocker, i was right. they did it again, whisking everyone away to the 1950s because actually resolving any of the scenarios they set up was ToO hArD. why bother when you could just make every single character Righteously Angry and Incurably Horny all the time, lecture the audience about social issues that have already been mainstream progressive for the last several decades, and call it a "love letter" to your fans?

Bughead doesn't just deserve to be endgame, but to get married, after all, these last 3 years we've only suffered. Barchie Stan doesn't deserve shit. So Bughead wedding at the end👰🏼‍♀️💍

Ahhh thank you for that, Anon!
Who says Alex is biased???? I mean he wrote an entire fanfic and multiple articles that rhapsodized about a couple that at the best of times looked openly annoyed with each other, but he gives a fair shake to everyone!
Hey, I don't know what's going on in Erinn's mind, but I have said several times over the last year or so that I don't think being on this show actually benefitted her. Quite the contrary, actually. So I'm not shocked they're writing her out. Thank god. They did...not do good work with that character.
Also, the heroic sacrifice thing? I was late, but I was right!!!

Jughead, the man who used to work at/run the town drive-in, who quotes films on the regular, has never talked about favorite films with his girlfriend of over a year. Tell me a little louder how uninvested he is in this relationship.

It’s the ships that get all the angst and drama and trials and separations etc that make it in the end, they’re the ones that get the investment and payoff. These filler ships are not getting that.
they're really not.
there's no real conflict and the emotional stakes are near the floor. and people can say whatever but in fiction, those are things that keep the story interesting and keep people invested. the biggest emotional stakes we saw from them were: betty's pregnancy scare which amounted to a pretty serious discussion they never finished (but it's okay, archie is going to propose anyway even tho they still haven't talked about where betty's head is—but i'm sure that means nothing), tabitha knowing jughead had to die in the "battle" to win and doing...nothing? to change it outside of looking sort of sad and accepting it, and toni marrying fangs to keep custody of their baby which ended up not being a problem anyway.
the most communicative couple ended up being veggie and that was because they needed them to break up.
idc what anyone says, none of those couples has the same i would die/kill for you energy the OGs has and that's been an absolute bore to watch. apathetic acceptance and outright avoidance is not what true love is made from. i saw so many posts from b/as about the musical and their insistence that archie would go into overprotective mode and be her shadow 24/7. he sort of drifted in and out of the story as needed. they want him to be like jughead was in high school, punching people for even putting her name in their mouths in a way he doesn't like.
that's not who any of these people are to each other. archie is not the guy who calls betty to warn her and risk the universe. tabitha is not the girl who can't live in a world without jughead. reggie isn't the guy who is always going to respect veronica. and tbh, i don't even feel like the show is writing them like they want me to be invested in them for a payoff. something is definitely missing from all of them.

Guys, let's be serious here. Riverdale has never been a story about Betty and Archie. This show is about best f*cking friends forever.
Can they finish without Bughead, without Varchie, and without Choni? Easy. But can it end with ba and (good lord) with jt? Not a single chance! Be realistic here. These are not the stories that Riverdale builds.
Most likely, Riverdale will end up with some comic book-style silliness – all possibilities are open, the options are endless. They eventually canonized the multi-f*cking-universe in the show.
It certainly doesn't mean that I want to keep looking at lame ships and idiotic stories. But who is asking me?

Okay, let’s say some things about promo!
*disclaimer, not an expert, not in the industry, could be wrong, etc.
Okay so let’s start with a few things:
~ RD has a significantly declining viewership, such that they are likely costing more money than they make
~ they eked out a last season for reasons that probably had a lot to do with latent profit and syndication as well as the huge cost of mounting a new show and already established contracts
~ the promos are consistently bad and have been for years, and rarely reflect the actual content of the show
Now. Considering this show hasn’t been afforded any extras for the last few years, up to and including a photoshoot for their last season, which indicates to me that the network does not want to spend more on this dead horse than they absolutely have to, I am going under what a think is a pretty safe assumption that the promo cut is outsourced. They don’t do it in house, it is likely farmed out to the cheapest place to do it. Which costs less, but it means it’s done by people with no knowledge of or connection to the show. That’s significant, because they likely have no idea what is going to turn the viewers away. It explains why the formula of how to promo well sounds simple but they keep whiffing it.
Promo’s job isn’t to reflect the show accurately, especially not on the CW. Promo’s job is to show enough action to pique your interest. The people cutting the promo very likely flip through the episode and look for any particularly salacious moments. A shot of the Cooper house just isn’t going to get people talking. They’re not looking for that. They’re looking for shots they can manipulate or cut in such a way that it looks exciting. That, to me, really explains the JT of the promo. Someone with zero RD knowledge cutting an episode that is likely almost entirely worldbuilding and exposition with whatever shots they can find or manipulate that look exciting.
Putting completely aside the fact that it looks quite dreamlike, putting aside the fact that Erinn has rarely been seen on set, let’s remember that promo is designed to manipulate. So whatever this promo or the full one shows, can we at least accept that we have a long and storied history of promos looking inflammatory and turning out to be nothing? And that goes for all shows. Just ask the EO shippers.

Hey - Ted, Evan, Delusional BA Troll, slowburns, BarChonis, fake Jabithas, BA-slobbering hack journalists, etc. - RAS said NO! JUGHEAD was Betty's Angel, NOT Archie! Bughead are confirmed soulmates. Cry harder.

Do you truly think Bughead stands a chance at getting endgame? I’ve tried to hold out hope these last two seasons. I thought once upon a time that eventually the payoff would be worth it, but the nonsense just goes on and on. I feel like BH’s get kicked in the teeth every episode and are punished for their years of devotion. And it’s not even like BA and JT are written well or have anywhere near the level of BH’s chemistry, but sometimes it feels like we’re stuck with them because RAS has disdain for his audience and is fixated on the “new” above honoring these characters and giving the show the ending it deserves. I’m sorry for being so negative. I just feel so stupid for continuing to invest anything in this show. I don’t want to discover a year from now that my time has been wasted and that the show is still trying to convince us that Betty and Jughead belong with other people and can’t even be assed to let them discuss anything not plot point related.
i've been avoiding these asks for a while because i don't want to come off like i'm telling anyone how to feel but since i keep getting asked i guess i'll try and give my honest opinion but hopefully without offending or upsetting anyone (jinxed by even saying it, i know).
bughead is not the first ship to get kicked in the teeth. they're not even the first ship to break up and have the writers ignore the fact that they dated for a good portion of time. they are not the first ship to date other people and totally act like they never dated until it's time to ramp up any drama. they are not the first ship to date, break up, date others, and then tell that new person that they love them.
and every ship i am thinking of for the above? they ended up together in the end. so yeah, i think it's possible. stories aren't told in a vacuum and shows that go on for 22 episodes or more need to drag out their narratives. these are not 8 episode netflix or hbo max shows that have limited time for their stories, they are filling a lot more air time. they have and will drag things out if they're trying to get to a certain point. yes, riverdale does this worse than others. 100%. 1000% even.
maybe it's a product of us all bingeing and watching shows with 8-10 eps a season but recently i was rewatching gilmore girls with my exchange student and i legit kept leaving the room because i felt like it was dragging on even tho i watched it when it was on week to week and was invested. there were a lot of episodes that just felt like they did nothing past fill some time. which is probably what they were doing when you need to make 22 of them in a season.
and listen, i'm not the biggest fan of anyone writing this show overall (how no one seems to know what anyone else is doing is just such a bad way to write?) but i don't think roberto actually has a disdain for the audience. ted? sure. we don't appreciate his genius and therefore suck. his arrogance is well known. evan? he wants attention. he got it. it was a dumb move. raise your hand if you're a bughead fic author who has written more interaction between betty and archie in your fics than this man (their king!) has written onscreen.
this show is badly run, written, and promoted. that's pretty obvious at this point. not a lot of people are watching, not a lot of people care anymore and i totally get why. i'm not going to tell you to continue being invested in something making you unhappy, your fictional escapes should bring you joy so taking a break when needed is always a good idea.
personally, if they're going to drag out this whole timelines mess, i don't think everything that happened will be ignored, it's just a continuation—and i'm not going to assume anything about the 50s thing, we don't even know how long it's going to last or what will happen within it. but we haven't even seen the finale yet and at the end of the day, i feel like they didn't have tabitha tell veronica it was 50/50 for the fun of it. but that's me and i think everyone should do what works for them when it comes to this show and fandom.
