DAI Companion Styles: Josephine
Dragon Age Companion Styles Series
Next up by special request from @magneticmage is the lovely, the gracious, the refined, the stunning Josephine Montilyet, Ambassador to the Inquisition. (And yes, Josephine is an advisor, not a companion; yes this series is called “Companion Styles”; yes I’ve decided to just lump the advisors in with them and not change the name, and we’re all just going to have to live with it. 😉)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Disclaimer: I am not a fashion expert, dress historian, or professional designer! I'm just a gamer who likes to sew and has a casual interest in historical fashion, and a great interest in fantasy worldbuilding and the implications thereof, and that's where I'm coming from on these posts. I'd also love to hear thoughts from fans who have a more in-depth background in historical dress, textiles, and armor.
Also, we’re going to be talking about gendered clothing, so let me state for the record that I don’t believe clothing has any inherent gender. However we’re going to be talking about fashion in a cultural context here, and in the context of Thedas (and specifically Orlais), fashion is heavily gendered, and how characters engage with those gendered expectations can be personally and socially interesting.
As with Sera, I’m going to be focusing mostly on Josephine’s style from an in-universe perspective because that’s what I think is most interesting!
Much appreciation to @dragonagegallery, whose posts have made the canon review for this post much easier! The Art of Dragon Age Inquisition was also a great reference.
Tumblr media
(Look at her. She even looks good in the Haven Chantry lighting. Nobody looks good in that. Iconic.)
Josephine is an Antivan-born noblewoman educated in Orlais, who trained and briefly worked as a bard before becoming disillusioned with that life and turning to a career as a diplomat instead. She has been working as the Antivan Ambassador to Orlais up until the point she joins the Inquisition as its Ambassador. Josephine is well-versed in the Grand Game and the culture of the Imperial Court and the upper class. If I were to say that Josephine is fashionable, I don’t think most people would disagree with me.
Yet her signature outfit is quite different from what we see on the fashionable upper class ladies of Orlais. There is a fair amount of Renaissance influence in Orlesian high fashion, but as others have pointed out, there's actually quite a lot of variation in sleeves, collar, and understructures (things like crinolines or panniers that give a skirt a certain volume and shape), drawing inspiration from centuries of European historical dress. Yet Josephine still stands apart from the fashions for Orlesian noblewomen, in some very interesting ways.
I should note at the start here that I am working at a bit of disadvantage with Josephine because we've never been to her country of origin in the games, and basically every Antivan character we've met so far has either been wearing armor, or the same styles as the country they're in at the time. (Also, most of them have been Crows, which Josephine is not.) So I can't comment on how Josie's look compares to what is fashionable in Antiva at the moment, because we don't know. Instead, I'll be talking about her style in the context of Orlais, which I think is fair since she went to school in Orlais and has been living and working there for quite a while now. Just bear in mind going forward that there is a whole sphere of potential influence that we can't really examine here.
But I do think there's also good reason to assume that Josephine takes inspiration from Orlesian fashion, starting with her color scheme. One of the first things that strikes me (and I think many viewers) about Josephine's outfit is "Wow, that's very gold." And it is! It's very gold and blue—colors directly associated with Orlais and with the nobility especially. We see gold and blue all over Orlais, from the capital to the countryside, and Josephine has deliberately chosen to dress herself in the colors that signify power and influence in this nation.
So let's take a look at the specific pieces she wears.
Tumblr media
Josephine is wearing what appears to me to be a blouse of gold-colored silk satin with puffed sleeves and a tie-neck or possibly a matching scarf, dark-colored breeches ending just below the knee, a heavier sleeveless overdress or vest in blue brocade or damask (possibly even fine tooled leather; it's really hard to say) that ends at the knee, gold stockings, and black flat shoes. She wears a wide leather belt at the waist, with a gold satin sash tied over it. You can see some better images of Josephine's outfit in concept art and her character model in detail on @dragonagegallery.
This outfit is fascinating to me, and if you've read my post on Sera's style, you might have already guessed a few reasons why.
Given Josephine's basic silhouette, it's easy to look at her and assume she's wearing a dress, but she actually isn't. Even if she was, it would be a break from the Orlesian high fashions of the day, which favor floor-length skirts. But this isn't a dress at all. I would actually compare the blue vest to the leather vests we see in some of the Inquisitor armor variants, for mages and for rogues. The detailing on Josephine's makes it look finer, but it's a similar style, with a similar utility: it's easy to move in. Josephine's vest even has large visible pockets on the sides! And this goes all the way back to her concept art.
Tumblr media
I think it's easy to get distracted by the big shiny gold sleeves and miss the fact that Josephine's outfit is actually very practical. In fact, you know what else it reminds me a little of?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Variants of this outfit appear in both Dragon Age 2 and Inquisition, and it's always been a non-gendered look. Note the knee breeches, the vest, and the puffed sleeves (though with much less extravagant gathers than Josephine's).
Josephine wears flat shoes, easy to walk in, comfortable for all-day wear. The wide leather belt echoes but does not exactly mirror the popular underbust corsetry seen on gowns; it is of a more practical style and material, and I'd imagine it could be good for back support for those long hours she spends at a desk. And in fact, the way Josephine wears it over her vest with the sash tied over the belt is not unlike the way a rogue Inquisitor wears their armor:
Tumblr media
Though Josephine has left behind the life of a bard, I feel it's undeniable that that life has influenced her style. This is rogue fashion—practical but still stylish, easy to move in, easy to carry items you might need. Josephine is dressed as a rogue, but adapted to her current profession and personal tastes.
It’s all an intriguing choice for a diplomat! Because despite the clear Orlesian influence, Josephine’s look does not very much resemble any of what is fashionable for Orlesian noblewoman at the moment. No long full skirts, no outer underbust corsetry (though her belt does offer a cinched at the waist look), no deep V neckline (though her blue vest does create a similar shape over her blouse). When we compare Josephine to these looks, it’s a very different silhouette with mostly very different shapes. Even her puffed sleeves are puffed in different places than the fashions of high noblewomen (which seem to have the most volume at the elbow or lower right now).
Tumblr media
But you know what we do see in Josephine’s outfit?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Breeches ending just below the knee. An outer garment that ends at the knee. Knee-high stockings. A flat black shoe. A shirt with sleeves puffed at the shoulders.
While Josephine’s look is ungendered in the context of a rogue, in the context of a noble this look is undeniably gendered, in a way that might not immediately register to our modern eye.
In the context of Orlesian culture, this is a Menswear-Inspired Look.
Now, unlike Sera, I do not believe Josephine to actually be wearing clothing designed for a man; given her station, this was all likely custom made for her. But in the context of Orlesian high fashion, there is some undeniably masculine styling going on here! And this isn’t about “women don’t wear pants”; many women in Dragon Age do, in fact, wear pants, all the time or in certain contexts; see above about rogue looks. Cassandra and Vivienne both have a skinny pants/leggings thing going on, and they both read more feminine in their styles to me, but they’ll get their own posts! With Josephine, it’s the specific styles of the pieces she’s wearing that bear similarities to men’s high fashion in Orlais. In a modern context, think a woman with long hair in a deliberately feminine style, wearing makeup, some statement jewelry, with a custom-tailored suit. Maybe with a few feminine accents on the suit itself; still definitely a suit. Josephine’s sleeves, for example, are not simply a copy of the male sleeve style; they’re taking inspiration but kind of doing their own thing. And of course, her hair is worn in a style that is practical, but still very elegant and feminine. It’s a Menswear-Inspired Look.
And I just love the fact that both of our F/F romance options in this game are kind of playing with gendered clothing in their personal style, but each very much in their own way.
I'm also fascinated by this one set of concept art called "Displaced Pilgrims" in The Art of Dragon Age: Inquisition, meant to represent "Fereldan and Orlesian refugees who arrived in Haven on a pilgrimage and were unable to leave following the disaster" (p. 75). One piece depicts an Orlesian woman dressed in what is from the hips up the same silhouette we see at the Winter Palace: exaggerated underbust corsetry that emphasizes the hips, a plunging V neckline with scalloped embellishment, a slightly puffed half-sleeve. But below the corset, the skirt has been cropped to mid-thigh and the woman wears a pair of breeches, stockings, and flat shoes with a rounded toe—strikingly similar to Josephine's lower silhouette. I can't recall ever actually seeing any NPCs wandering around Haven looking like this, which is a shame, because I love the concept of an Orlesian noblewoman blending masculine and feminine fashions in order to dress more practically for a journey into the mountains, while still appearing fashionable. I think this may be what Josephine is doing.
Josephine’s necklace is of interest to me as well, as it doesn’t bear a particular resemblance to anything I’ve found in Orlesian fashion; while we see a lot of necklines trimmed in gold, and a few necklaces, there’s nothing that looks like this piece. After a bit of research, I don’t think this is just a flashy piece of jewelry. Given the size of the chain and the way Josephine wears it draped over her shoulders, I think this might actually be a livery collar, also called a chain of office, that denotes her position as an ambassador!
Tumblr media
Josephine’s whole look is very distinctive, and very put-together. In my opinion, this is a Choice. This is the kind of outfit that says, “I look like this on purpose,” and this from a woman who knows that a first impression may decide the course of a conversation that will affect the fate of nations. She is wearing a chain of office that immediately announces her station. She’s wearing expensive fabrics—again, I am interpreting that shiny gold fabric as silk and that is not cheap. Her vest shows fine detailing. Her clothing immediately says that she is both a person of means and holds a position of respect. Her color scheme speaks to her Orlesian connections. Her clothing conveys power and status. Yet her divergence from the styles of an Orlesian noblewoman also sets her apart. The practical elements of her look say, “I am no idle lady of leisure; I am capable; I am prepared for every occasion, even the unexpected.” And the roguish elements hearken back to her bard training, saying, “I know how the Game is played; I can be dangerous if I must be.”
Above all, I think this outfit speaks to Josephine’s self-assurance. She knows and understands social trends, but she is not beholden to them; she bends them to her tastes, rather than being bent by them. She acknowledges her past and what she has learned from it. She knows herself, and is in control of her own image.
I think this outfit does some pretty brilliant and inspired visual storytelling about Josephine Montilyet. I wouldn’t change a thing.

The movements of the Hero of Ferelden after the Blight are an interesting topic, to be sure; there are entire books pondering the subject, including one rather torrid romance series banned in at least three territories. Lady Amell herself has never offered clarification, other than to mention that she's never very much been an enthusiast for ropes as the romance suggests.
What is known is that, at Queen Anora's insistence, she became the Warden-Commander of Amaranthine for a spell - a time marked by several acute disagreements with both King Alistair and her second-in-command, Nathaniel Howe (though the latter, it's said, sourced greatly from passion rather than the fervent dislike shared by King and Hero). In the end, she bequeathed leadership to Howe and made herself scarce from Ferelden, not stepping upon its shores again for many years.
The tales warp and part into separate threads, after that; some say she was seen in the company of the former usurper, Loghain Mac Tir, in Montsimmard; still others speak of her roaming the Free Marches with the Qunari who would one day become Arishok - though not since he left for Par Vollen; yet more whisper of her travels with the Witch of the Wilds, before Empress Celene made a court advisor of the latter.
Perhaps there's some truth to them all; Lady Amell has never elaborated.
What can be confirmed is that she made landfall in Antiva City some time around 9:34 or 9:35, where she encountered a Circle very much like the one she'd inhabited prior to its near total destruction. With the power and clout she'd gained for herself in her travels - along with the backing of one Tejasvin Demetrius, a merchant prince rumored to be her father, and Zevran Arainai, the only assassin known to have left the Crows and lived - she made major headway in preventing the likes of Uldred from ever happening to the Asha Alcazar.
Eventually, she became the youngest First Enchanter in Southern Thedas; when the Circle as an entity was officially dissolved in 9:38, she maintained her role as leader and protector of the Alcazar, whose inhabitants began calling themselves the Antivan Owls in direct conjunction with the Crows - though they would not consider themselves either allies or enemies with the assassins.
When the Conclave was called, Sister Nightingale reached out to Lady Amell for mutual aid in the impending Inquisition; the Lady herself would be the Inquisition's magical (or, esoterics) advisor, while her Owls would both serve and be protected by the newfound group. Lady Amell accepted. Some of the Owls traveled as escort to Lady Montilyet, while the rest - along with Amell herself - shapeshifted into birds to take to the skies and arrive ahead of schedule.
The surprise of a considerable flock landing at Haven in the midst of demons pouring forth from the Breach, particularly after said flock turned back into mages, must have been quite a shock. When questioned, Lady Amell commented that she wasn't sure what vexed her more; that she'd arrived too late to assist Divine Justinia, or that Leliana hadn't thought to warn her just who would be commanding the Inquisition's armed forces. Further explanation was not offered.
I realized that I'd never really pinned down just what Jeanne was up to between DAO and DAI, so I figured I should! I also wanted to redraw her old advisor outfit, now with extra Antivan flair.
As for Antiva, I wracked my brain for quite a while to figure out which Circle she would have ended up at to reintroduce herself to the system; Antiva City won out both for the sake of her roots through dear old Dad, and the fact that all we know about it is that it is (or, was) as strict as Kinloch. "Asha Alcazar" comes from Queen Asha Campana (important Antivan historical figure), and the word for a Spanish fortress and/or palace.
Jeanne's also a good waypoint between Vivienne's Loyalists and Fiona's Libertarians, which I think would work well for the Inquisition's official magic advisor. If asked, she'd probably call herself an Aequitarian with Lucrosian tendencies.

Ooh for the WIP game!! Bull introduces El to Zevran.... and Untitled Document 😈
So as it turns out, I didn't check what "untitled document" was specifically as it was an old doc I recently found again (old enough that El had a different name!). And it's part of the Bull introduces Zevran to El lead-in, just like...longer. 🤣 But some of the details may not line up right. It needs editing for sure.
So you'll get both! Sorry to disappoint it's not something more salacious!
--
"Hey, kadan. See that elf over there? The one with the tattoo?"
They were sitting in Herald's Rest, enjoying a lull between crises, for once, in their usual corner.
El had to lean out from her seat. She just caught the profile of a swarthy male elf, blond, with an amiable face, his eyes crinkling with laughter as he apparently charmed the bartender. His tattoo wasn’t Dalish, and neither were his clothes – leather, but not a craftsmanship she recognized. "I've never seen him before."
"He's not one of ours. He's just passing through. I met him on a job some five or six years ago. Name's Zevran."
The name rung a little bell in the back of her mind, but she couldn't place it. “That isn't a Dalish name, as far as I'm aware.”
"He's Antivan, not Dalish. Former assassin for the Antivan Crows. Well, former member, anyway. Pretty sure he's still an assassin."
Ellawayn reeled, starting to stand. "An assassin? Here?"
Bull chuckled. "Relax, kadan, he's not here for you. He’s a friend. He left the Crows over ten years ago – and the Crows don't exactly allow their members to leave. Last I heard, he had taken out a handful of their leaders, to boot. So the fact that he's still alive is pretty impressive." Bull took a nonchalant sip from his tankard and said casually, "Guess it's not too surprising that he was one of the hero of Ferelden’s best buddies during the Blight. Helped him take down the Archdemon in Denerim."
El stared at Bull. Mahariel was the most famous elf in an age – that is, until she got herself into this mess – and her personal hero as a girl.
“Pretty sure they’re married now, though,” Bull continued conversationally. “Or whatever the Dalish equivalent is. Definitely seemed like it when I met ‘em.”
Ellawyn lowered herself to the table and hissed under her breath. “He’s – that’s – that’s Zevran Arainai?”
She looked at him again. Other than the daggers strapped conspicuously to his waist and thigh, she wouldn't have initially considered him a threat. He was a handsome older elf, lively and engaging the patrons around him, making them laugh. Bits and pieces of his lyrical accent floated about the bar noise.
“So, funny thing,” Bull continued. “He’s here because I wrote to him.”
--
“Zev, I'd like to introduce you to Inquisitor Lavellan.”
Zevran stood with a bow. When he spoke, it was with a lilting Activan accent. "My dear lady – your eminence – it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance." He kissed the back of her hand with the most courtly of manners, as though he were a prince and not a former member of the Crows, and El froze, feeling an absurd blush rush to her cheeks. All of her diplomatic training fled in the face of this charming man – the bonded of the most famous elf in Thedas before her.
Zevran’s golden eyes flashed to Bull, questioning. "But, ah, I thought it was Herald? This is the Herald's Rest, yes?"
"It's both, I'm afraid," she answered with a self effacing smile. "But please. Call me Ellawyn. Neither title really suits me. And anyway…I've heard so much about you, I feel as though we're already acquainted.”
Zevran lifted a mischievous brow at Bull. “Has she, now? What silly tales have you filled the Inquisitor’s head with, my friend?”
Bull laughed heartily. “Not from me!” He cocked his thumb at El. “El’s been hearing about your Warden’s exploits since she was a kid.”
Zevran’s eyes widened on Ellawyn.
“I was perhaps fourteen during the Blight,” she explained. “News of Warden Mahariel’s heroism reached far and wide, even to my clan in the Free Marches. He was a hero to us all.”
Zevran clutched his chest and pretended to stumble backwards. “Oh, you do wound me. Alas, it is not your fault, my dear! But no, I suppose time marches on. Come, come, let us speak somewhere with perhaps fewer ears to overhear. I believe all three of us have many people who want us dead, yes?”

Shep's Hermitcraft Character Design Event [Week 2, Day 4 - The Assassin and the Hermit]
Hello! This post is in regards to @shepscapades Hermit Design Event! Check it out here!
The prompt I'm doing throughout this week is:
"Video Game Swap"
With what I'm doing for Shep's event, it's all about my AU named Hermit Age! If you wish to know more about the AU, check the masterlist out!
Today's designs are all about the runaway assassin and the hermit mage, Etho and Bdubs!
Etho
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Adding 3 variants of his Hero Forge design, hooded and masked, masked, and unmasked]
This is Etho, the Human rogue!
His backstory stems from his beginnings as a thieving orphan in the city of Hossberg, the capital of the Anderfels. His life changed course when the Antivan Crows, an elite organization of thieves, spies, and assassins, "collects" him to make him an assassin in the future. He was trained and he did excel, becoming a skilled assassin contracted to kill targets. He eventually got tired of a life of only killing and took the chance to flee when the opportunity arose. Etho became a fugitive from the Crows for years, and by time he would be cornered and caught by them, only to be saved by Bdubs. Now the two have banded together and are working together to protect each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Envision the armor of the Crows as this! This is what Etho used to wear when he was still an assassin for the Crows. Now however he wears what is akin to his Hero Forge design, still kind of adorned with the ideas and motifs and vibe of the Crows' armor but has left all the more complicated parts of said armor.
To check out my interpretation of Etho further, check it here!
For his Hero Forge design, it's over here!
And for the picrew, it's this one I've used!
Bdubs
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is Bdubs the Human hedge mage!
The backstory I have in mind for him is that he lived a hermit for most of his life in the middle of Nevarra and the Free Marches. He wasn't in much contact with any other people in the area and has been living only with his family up until they died. He didn't know a thing or two about magic when it surfaced for him as a child, but he did his best to learn it, harness it, and control it even without the Circle's teachings. He grew up excelling n using his magic no matter what unconventional methods he used. He lived quietly for a long long time, up until Etho was found and caught by the Crows in a place nearby where Bdubs lived. He saved the assassin and now he is owed Etho's life, and the two became friends and partners, working together and defending each other. And though Bdubs never learned about a life outside of his hermitage, he is eager for it all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Flemeth is the lady with white hair, Morrigan is the lady with the purple cowl and outfit, and Solas is the elf]
What Bdubs is wearing on his Hero Forge design is completely original, as I envision him to be making use of leathers and cloth that he spun and used in his own secluded area away. He didn't make use nor had much contact with any other people within the area anyway. Though how I designed Bdubs is somewhat inspired by the apostate mages above. He takes on the natural look of some hermit living off by their own selves without social contact with anyone else.
Bdubs does not yet have his own interpretation (he's the next one I have in mind though) but you can still see his Hero Forge design here!
As for the picrew used, it's this one!
If you want to know more about Dragon Age, check out the wiki! It's one great way to know about the series!
That's it for Day 4! Honestly, I will make use of this whole week to show off my designs for different characters! It's a lovely experience <3

WIP Wednesday
bouncing back and forth today between The Queen of Swords and RTM. political intrigue is hard.
Tumblr media
Leliana watched the people watching the Inquisitor as she made her way down the floor. Various marquis and lords, dithering ladies cooling themselves with dove feather fans. A sea of false frozen faces, pressed vests, and revealing necklines watching the oddity that walked with rehearsed steps towards their doomed-to-die Empress.
Everything was too much.  The grandeur of it all made her teeth ache.
The lights were too bright. The heat was too stifling. The string quartet sounded like dying darkspawn, regardless of the melody it played. Innumerable voices speaking in hushed whispers, low like the thrum of insects, grated against the inside of her skull.
The almost-militaristic uniform felt stiff despite the fabric otherwise being rich. Josephine had insisted the Inquisition attend the Winter Palace in attire that ‘denoted their status as an organization, but remained formal enough for the occasion.’
It was a shame, Leliana thought sourly, to be so confined in a place like this, where formal attire spoke more than words could.
And yet she couldn’t disagree with dear Josephine for practicality’s sake; she was right, as she was usually when it came to more intricate court affairs. After all, why hide behind a physical mask when everyone in Halamshiral already knew who lay in wait behind it? Why not flaunt the Inquisition’s power, its status?
Not that one of those garish porcelain masks would have helped her any; everyone knew who she was. The only mask Leliana could hide behind was her own, and that was slipping as of late.
Eons passed since she was last here, but she despised this place a little more each time she stepped across its threshold.
Too many eyes as she made her way out of the vestibule and into the ballroom, as she descended the stairs to the floor to join her fellow advisors, awaiting announcement to the court. Leliana offered Cullen a curt smile as she took her place between him and Josephine. She quietly scrutinized the way he fumbled with the sash around his coat, but at the same time reached up to tug at the silk cravat that hid the evidence of her betrayal.
Inquisitor Trevelyan descended the stairs opposite the ones Leliana had, having been the first to be announced to the court. She, too, wore the same attire as the rest of the Inquisition, save for House Trevelyan’s crest which was stitched into a pocket just below the collar. Josephine had fussed over the young leader’s unruly pale hair, finally straightening and securing it in a typical Orlesian braid. It wasn’t the most elaborate thing, requiring some practicality should the Inquisitor undoubtedly find herself amid conflict over the night’s affairs. Then again, elaborate was never a word that described Inquisitor Elisabeth Trevelyan.
It was a blessing that Elisabeth was accustomed to some courtly intrigue, though Ostwick’s breed of courtly affairs paled in comparison to that of the grand Orlesian Game. Long hours were spent within the Ambassador’s office back at Skyhold, holding lessons in diction, etiquette, dancing—anything that could help acclimate her to such an event. She took to it like waterfowl, but she was a gosling on a lake full of swans.
It could be any of them, Leliana thought. A grand masquerade, held under the auspices of a peace talk? Every bard in Orlais should be here. The Nightingale would have been shocked if a representative of the Antivan Crows were not in attendance.
This was going to be a long, irritating night.

Guardian, 9:31 Dragon
Goran never favoured the parties hosted by the royal family. It was nothing more than an elaborate way of flaunting what he coveted the most. The throne was rightfully his, and it was plucked from his grasp when his uncle Corbin assumed control of Starkhaven despite his father’s dying wish. He despised him ever since.
The cool breeze kissed Goran’s face as he stood on the balcony. He listened to the idle chatter of the elites, and his grip tightened on the silver chalice when his cerulean eyes landed on his relatives. Corbin was seated at the head of the royal table.
For forty long years, Goran has lived his life under his shadow. He was ridiculed in the council meetings, humiliated at political gatherings, and Corbin relished in it. But he wouldn’t any longer. Not after tonight.
His eyes flitted to the mercenaries hidden among the servants. He made a point to memorise their names and their features. He wanted to thank them properly when this was over. The Flint Company may not have had the reputation of the Antivan Crows, but they were skilled enough.
“Lord Vael,” a feminine voice sounded from his left.
Goran turned his head and his expression softened when he saw Johane approaching from the shadowed corridor.
“Lady Harimann,” he greeted formally, offering a curt nod as she stood beside him. “I suspect you have news?”
Johane nodded, lowering her voice, “The doors have been sealed, and your men await your signal.”
“And what of the guards?”
“They have been diverted to patrol outside the palace.”
Goran took a slow sip of his wine, savouring the taste of the rare vintage. “You have my eternal thanks.”
“So long as your gratitude doesn’t end here. Do not forget who arranged your ascent, Goran.” Johane clasped her hands together, “I would hate to see your reign end faster than the Ferelden Blight.”
He gave her a contemptuous look in response to her thinly veiled threat. “Unlike my uncle, I do not forget who my allies are.”
Goran began to move into the hall towards the royal table, leaving Johane behind. He wore a tight-lipped smile when he passed the feasting nobles, ignoring their sneers. They would never turn their noses up at him again.
“Your highness,” he bowed.
“Nephew,” Corbin greeted in a flat tone. “I take it you’re enjoying the celebrations? I must say, I am surprised you haven’t already indulged in the feast.”
Goran willed himself not to scowl.
“Aye, and now that you mention it, Father… His belt has certainly loosened since last we met,” Carsten jeered, and Adain chortled.
He forced a chuckle and ran his fingers through his brown curls. Imbeciles, he thought. He loathed them just as much.
“Where is Meghan?” Goran asked, looking at the empty seat beside Corbin.
“My wife has been feeling ill as of late,” Corbin reached for a roll of buttered bread. “She is abed.”
“Pity. I would have liked to have seen her tonight, but no matter.” Goran waved his hand dismissively, “I pray that she recovers soon.”
“She doesn’t need your prayers.” Corbin tore the bread into pieces before stuffing one into his mouth. “And I doubt anything coming from your mouth will ascend higher than the ceiling.”
His cousins erupted in boisterous laughter again, and Goran pressed his lips together.
“Your highness,” Goran bowed and turned to move to the centre of the hall.
“If I may have your attention,” he called as he moved his eyes around the room. The hall quieted to a whisper and curious gazes followed him. He watched the assassins move into position. “Tonight, we’ve come together to celebrate Wintersend and give our gratitude to the Maker.” Goran said, “But this blessed day also marks the fortieth year of our Prince’s rule of Starkhaven.”
Goran looked at the mercenaries who were moving behind his relatives as the room was filled with applause.
He shifted his gaze to Corbin, and his expression hardened as he saw the smug grin on his face.
“Long may he reign,” Goran raised his goblet.

Isabela is the captain of the pirate ship Siren's Call and one of Areida Hawke's companions.
Background
Tumblr media
Isabela's birth name is Naishe. She was born in Rivain to Madam Hari, a notorious thief and charlatan, and an unknown father who was described as "large, hairy, and good with his hands" by her mother. When she became a pirate, the first ship's captain she served under began to call her "Isabela," his "little beauty," as a joke and she eventually adopted the name as her pseudonym.
Madam Hari was a thief and charlatan who had infamously posed as a Rivaini seer to help a village in the Rivaini interior in exchange for coin. When she got bored, she would leave the village to steal from other people or con them into buying mystical charms like the Rivaini Fertility Talisman. These trips could last weeks, and Hari would often take her daughter with her to help. The young Isabela took to dishonesty quickly. But Madam Hari grew disillusioned with the life of a fraud and eventually she converted to the Qun to give meaning to her life. She sold Isabela into marriage with a business associate of the Antivan Crows, Luis, when she refused to convert. While Isabela offers numerous interpretations of the bargain her mother struck when she was given away, she is noted as having told Varric Tethras once that her mother gave her away in exchange for nothing more than the promise that she would be looked after. Luis took her to Antiva City and they were married three weeks later, just shy of Isabela's nineteenth birthday. As a result, Isabela has a poor opinion of her mother.
Luis was a rich man, buying Isabela many fine things and hiring a tutor to teach her to read and write, but the marriage was loveless and she was treated as his "plaything." Though Isabela enjoyed the first few months of her life with Luis, she quickly became bored, and then angry when it became clear she was expected to act as "befitted the lady of the house". After a year, Isabela began to deliberately antagonize him, thinking he'd let her go. Around this time, she met Zevran Arainai in Antiva City, and promptly started an affair, based mostly on physical attraction and a desire to test her boundaries with Luis. Zevran also taught her the basics of knife combat.
Realizing that his young wife was out of control, Luis resolved to get rid of her. According to his journal, he planned to "lend" her to certain business acquaintances who had expressed an interest. He was assassinated in his bed a week later by Zevran. Isabela provides differing accounts of the exact circumstances of his assassination to different parties. The Antivan Crows keep their records secret, and so the identity of the person who wished Luis dead has never been revealed. Though it is unclear whether Isabela contracted the assassination, she helped Zevran accomplish his task by giving him the location of the key to Luis' room.
On the same night, she left the house with nothing but two daggers (given by Zevran, who carried seven on his person) and a sack full of jewelry she used to bribe sailors into helping her commandeer the Siren's Call, her husband's ship. They sailed to Llomerryn, where the sailors abandoned her. A day later, Isabela used her untested knife skills to duel a man she has only referred to as the Jackdaw, betting that if she could best him in single combat, he would have to help her hire a crew and find a job. Isabela won the duel, though she's unsure whether the Jackdaw let her win out of pity. She found herself a new crew and a new captain (as she knew she would be unable to captain her own ship and wanted to learn under someone who could). She later killed the captain over an insult and took back control of the Siren's Call. There are rumors that she and the Jackdaw started a passionate love affair, though he disappeared never to be seen again a year after they met. After she became a pirate, Isabela became extremely promiscuous, and soon became a raider—the self-proclaimed "Queen of the Eastern Seas."  By the time she landed in Kirkwall, she had been a captain for approximately 10 years.
Involvement
Dragon Age: Origins
Tumblr media
Ilona Cousland and her companions meet Isabela at The Pearl along with Isabela's first mate Casavir. She is seen arguing with three other men. When a fight breaks out soon afterwards, she defeats the group of men due to her superior dueling skills. Her ship is staying in Denerim to let her men fill up on supplies and other "pleasures". Zevran, who met her in Antiva, introduces her as the "Queen of the Eastern Seas and the sharpest blade in Llomerryn."
Impressed by her dueling skills, Ilona asks Isabela to teach her those skills. Isabela makes a deal with her that she will only do so if she can beat her in a round of Wicked Grace, a game of cards. During the game, Ilona catches Isabela cheating, impressing the sea captain as the game was just a way for her to see if Ilona had the reflexes for her to learn the dueling skills.
Dragon Age II
Tumblr media
Act 1
Isabela is first encountered by Areida Hawke in a Lowtown tavern named the Hanged Man, brawling with Lucky and his cohorts. Afterwards she asks Areida to back her up in a duel she's arranged with Hayder, a man she worked with in Antiva and enforcer of the crime lord Castillon, who's been looking for her all over the city. That night, Areida and her companions accompany Isabela to Hightown where they are ambushed by Hayder's men. They then track Hayder himself to the Chantry and kill him.
Isabela reveals that she worked as a smuggler, transporting lyrium, jewels and criminals. She fell out of favor with Castillon, an Antivan merchant with ties to the Felicisima Armada, after she freed the "cargo" of 200 Blight refugees he'd hired her to transport. It is never revealed where she was intended to deliver these slaves, only that Kirkwall was not her destination. Castillon ordered her to retrieve a valuable relic to pay him back for the loss of his slaves, but she lost it in the storm that wrecked her ship on the reefs near Kirkwall. Isabela is confident that getting the relic for Castillon will get him off her back.
Act 2
Isabela enlists Areida's help in retrieving the Qunari relic called the Tome of Koslun from another thief called Wall-Eyed Sam. Isabela reveals that she stole the tome from the Orlesians, who were attempting to return it to the Qunari. While fleeing a pursuing Qunari dreadnought, both it and Isabela's ship were caught in a storm and shipwrecked, thus explaining the Qunari's and Isabela's current predicaments.
After Areida and Isabela track Wall-Eyed Sam to the Dark Foundry, Isabela runs away to chase him, leaving the rest of the party alone to plow through Tevinter mages and Qunari led by a Sten. After leaving the building, Areida finds Isabela's Letter on Wall-Eyed Sam's body. It says that she made off with the Tome of Koslun and is planning to leave Kirkwall. Having developed a close friendship with Areida however, Isabela has a change of heart and returns during the Qunari invasion on Kirkwall to deliver the relic to the Qunari, saying that Areida's influence was what made her come back. Appreciative towards Isabela for doing the right thing, Areida in return agrees to a one-on-one duel with the Arishok in exchange for Isabela's life. Areida is able to defeat the Arishok in battle, therefore preventing the rest of the Qunari from assaulting Kirkwall even further and from taking Isabela.
Act 3
Isabela enlists Areida's help once again, this time in a plot to lure Castillon into a trap by using Isabela as bait. She first has Areida pretend to betray her and turn her in to Velasco, Catillon's right hand man, then leaves a trail for Areida and the others to follow as she is being taken away. After Velasco takes Isabela to Castillon's Landing to wait for Castillon's arrival Areida, Isabela, and the other companions attack and kill Velasco and his men once he realizes that is was a trap. While waiting for Castillon, Isabela advises searching through the warehouse for leverage. The group finds documents outlining Castillon's plans to expand his slaving organization to the Free Marches. When Castillon arrives, Isabela uses the documents to blackmail him. She threatens to reveal his slavery ring plans to the Kirkwall authorities unless he gives her his ship and promises to never hunt her again. Castillon agrees and Isabela gives him the documents and lets him go.
After Anders blows up the Kirkwall Chantry, Isabela sides with Areida in defending the mages when Knight Commander Meredith declares the right of annulment on Kirkwall's circle of magi. Before the final battle, Isabela reaffirms her loyalty to Areida.
Dragon Age: The Silent Grove
Isabela accompanies Varric and King Alistair to Antiva City, where they infiltrate the headquarters of the Antivan Crows. After meeting Prince Claudio Valisti, a former "business partner" of Isabela's late husband, Isabela warns Alistair to not trust a word Claudio says.
Isabela assists in infiltrating Velabanchel, and, along with Varric, holds off the Antivan Crows while Alistair goes after his target.
Isabela captains the ship she and her companions use to escape Velabanchel, later navigating through the Tellari swamps. She is the first to attempt to defend Alistair from an attack from Yavana's high dragon.
While leaving the swamps following their meeting with Yavana in the Silent Grove, Isabela is pierced by an arrow. Claudio Valisti turns out to be the culprit, and kidnaps Alistair in exchange for Isabela and Varric's lives. Isabela swears to hunt Claudio down and kill him. After retreating to the Silent Grove, Isabela demands that Yavana save Alistair. The witch replies that it is not her concern, but Varric bargains with her. Yavana places a mysterious enchantment on the pair, healing Isabela's wound. The two then storm Claudio's camp. Isabela engages Claudio in a duel. Claudio insists that Isabela was not good enough for her late husband, Luis, and that she is trying to seduce Alistair. He also says that she was dragged out of the gutter because of her marriage, and that Luis lavished her with wine and silks, and after bedding him and whispering kind words in his ear for many nights she had him assassinated. Claudio bests Isabela, and is about to deliver the killing blow when she cuts off his hand, slits his throat and stabs him through the heart.
Dragon Age: Those Who Speak
Isabela is the narrator of Dragon Age: Those Who Speak. She accompanies Alistair in his hunt for Aurelian Titus as a hired hand and a confidante.
They travel to Qarinus and attend a ball, where she meets a person she appears to be familiar with, Lord Devon. Isabela seems to have a long-lasting hatred for him. Devon is surprised that she is still alive. In a conversation "eye-to-eye" he mentions that Isabela owes him and threatens to reveal to Alistair what happened on the Venefication Sea. She intimidates him into silence by drawing her dagger. Finally, Aurelian Titus arrives. Alistair confronts him, but he flees, leaving his minions to fight for him. The last of them eventually wounds Devon. Isabela knocks Devon's assailant unconscious to the floor, but as he is muttering thanks she stabs him in the chest. She tells her companions that he was killed by Titus's man.
Varric tricks the location of Aurelian's home on Seheron from a captured cultist, and Isabela orders her crew to sail to the island. She keeps the crew terrified by telling them scary stories about horn-headed fanatics. As they approach Sehereon, they are attacked by two Qunari dreadnoughts.
The trio are captured by the Qunari and are moved to a Qunari war camp, Akhaaz. Isabela is kept in a cell separately from Varric and Alistair. She is interrogated by Rasaan, a tamassran who asks Isabela what the meaning of her name is. Isabela reveals that her first captain called her "little beauty" as his idea of a joke. Then Rasaan asks her what happened to him and Isabela answers that she killed him. She also admits that even if she made many mistakes in her life, she doesn't feel any guilt. When the tamassran asks more questions, Isabela has an outburst in anger, causing Rasaan to strike her and tell her that mistakes can be corrected before leaving the cell.
Rasaan eventually returns to Isabela's cell and repeatedly demands that she tell her her true name. She threatens Isabela with qamek, but Isabela still refuses to reveal anything. After Rasaan tries to gently persuade Isabela by saying she may know what happened to her mother, Isabela begins to open up about her past.
She reveals that her mother was a Qunari convert who sold Isabela to Luis because she refused to convert. Eventually, Isabela found herself deep in debt to the Felicisima Armada, and resorted to slave trafficking in order to pay off her debts.
One day, the Orlesian navy cornered their ships in the Venefication Sea. Lord Devon had packed the holds too tightly and Isabela failed to outmaneuver the Orlesians. Fearing capture, they threw the chained slaves overboard to drown. Isabela swore then that she would never traffic slaves again. Rasaan comforts Isabela, but when she still refuses to reveal her name, Rasaan strikes her again and attempts to force her face into the qamek. This would in effect make her viddath-bas rather than viddathari, as conversion to the Qun would be involuntary for Isabela.
Isabela overpowers Rasaan and escapes her cell. Isabela eventually locates the cell where Alistair and Varric are held. She releases them, telling them to escape, while she goes to rescue her crew. In the end, Isabela finds her crew and tells them about the dangers of trying to escape and asks them to choose whether they want to stay or come with her. Her crew decides to come with her.
However, before she has a chance to open up the cells, Rasaan appears. She says that the other Qunari thought she'd try to escape but she knew her better. The enraged Rasaan doesn't care about converting Isabela anymore, believing that the only solution is her death. In the fierce battle that ensues, Rasaan is eventually defeated. Isabela holds her dagger to Rasaan's throat, ready to kill. She then tells her that her birth name was Naishe but it isn't anymore. She then drives the dagger into the ground, deliberately missing Rasaan's head, thus showing that she had no intention of killing her.
At the same time, Alistair duels Sten (now the Arishok) and defeats him. Alistair refuses to kill him and instead offers him to work together against Titus, an offer which Sten accepts. Accompanied by two Qunari dreadnoughts, Isabela, Alistair, Varric, Sten and her crew set sail once more in her restored pirate ship towards Titus' stronghold in Seheron. On board the ship, Isabela again reaffirms her determination to help Alistair with his mission.
Dragon Age: Until We Sleep
Qunari dreadnoughts attack Aurelian Titus' fortress and Varric infiltrates the building while Isabela and Alistair assault the fortress directly with the Qunari. Prior to this, Sten/the Arishok tells Alistair and Isabela the Qunari version of the myth of King Calenhad, and how he made a deal with a mysterious witch to drink dragon blood to become a Reaver and create Ferelden.
Varric's attempt to free King Maric from the Magrallen causes everyone to be pulled into the Fade. Isabela is found trapped in a nightmare created by magister Aurelian Titus in the Fade, where she is a Qunari and no longer remembers her true past. Varric and Maevaris Tilani find her but she doesn't recognize them as anyone but bassra and attacks them. Eventually Titus finds them and summons demons to kill them all. The trio all escape and once safe, Varric tries to remind her of who she really is and that this Qunari facade is not who she wants to be. Although she initially believes it would be easier to submit to others' expectations, she is eventually convinced that she does not want to be defined by others; thus making peace with her doubts and trials and also becoming content with her self perception and dignity as a hero. The trio then heads off in search of Alistair. They find Alistair with the real Maric in the Fade and together convince King Maric to aid them in killing Aurelian Titus. Isabela rejoins Alistair and Varric to attack Titus and distract him long enough to allow Maevaris and Maric to kill him. After escaping the Fade, she is present when Alistair shatters the Magrallen, killing Maric. Afterwards she asks Varric if Alistair made the right decision, to which he replies that he doesn't know. Afterwards, Isabela leaves her ship, her destination unknown.
Dragon Age: Inquisition
When Rosabelle Trevelyan asks Varric Tethras about Isabela's fate Varric states that she went back to the Raiders of the Waking Sea and is calling herself an admiral. Varric admits he isn't sure if she actually has a position of authority within the Raiders or if it's just another self-styled title.
