#anyway. I’m right about Kaisa.
Text
I headcanon Kaisa as being just slightly hypotensive. I’m thinking normal blood pressure around 11/7. Most importantly, I headcanon that occasionally it may drop and she knows, but doesn’t do anything about it.
So sometimes she’ll be in the library, and will be on her feet for too long, or maybe it’ll be too hot and she hasn’t let go of her cape, or maybe she even has been so caught up in her job that she hasn’t eaten or drink water in three hours. And she’ll begin sweating, and ignore it. Then she’ll feel lightheaded, and think it’s fine. And then her eyesight will get hazy, and she’ll think ‘nah, I can take it’. Then her hearing will sizzle and her mind will spin and she’ll still do nothing. And if someone’s nearby they’ll begin noticing she’s pale and unresponsive, and that’s because she’s trying to not fall down and wondering why she’s seeing dark spots. But mostly, that probably happens when she’s alone, so when she refuses to sit down and drink water/eat/lie down, she’ll just faint for a bit (on the hardwood floor. Ouch.) and get back within a couple of seconds (and just go about her day like nothing happened)
Anyway the place I’m trying to get to is: imagine Kaisa is hanging out with the Hilda gang for some reason, and at some point they notice the blood draining from her face and her eyes going unfocused and then she just drops unconscious on the floor with no prior warning. Imagine the chaos. Imagine Hilda about to slap her and being held back by David while Frida tries to remember the cpr training they had in the Sparrow Scouts. Imagine Kaisa waking back up suddenly and scaring the living shit out of them
Kaisa already has such undead vampire vibes, I just think that’d be hilarious 😭😭

hey look it’s my blorbos
YAY the first time I’ve completed art in time for pride month!! here’s some of the chars from the sketchbook kid AU celebrating with the most boring backgrounds ever 🌈 I’m gonna ramble under the cut, you know the drill
sooo I think I’ve already mentioned that Mattie is trans, but fyi Kaisa is in this universe as well!!
tbh I actually didn’t have this idea for them both to start with, it just kinda happened that way and ngl I just…I love the idea of Mattie having someone close to her right from the start who just gets it, and that Kaisa gets to have that shared experience with her. I think before Mattie was born Kaisa would have initially had some worries deep down about if the kid took after her too much (in terms of her not great experiences with magic and self-doubt, being a bit of an awkward mess (affectionate) ) but instead she gets to see Mattie taking after her in a whole bunch of ways and just thriving 🥺 and she gets to be a source of support and understanding that maybe she didn’t have herself when she was younger. anyway these witches are trans and I care them so much you guys 🥺
aaaand hey look I drew Harvey’s parents for once! btw in my headcanons for this AU Harvey’s parent on the left of him is non-binary and goes with any pronouns but mainly they/them! Harvey calls them Ren (short for parent). also I have names for these two now!! I’ve been calling Harvey’s parent Lin (left) (partly bc it means ‘forest’... like have you SEEN this couple’s living room wall, they are plant obsessed and I’m keeping it) and his mom is Nia (right). congrats on breaking the hilda curse of adults not having names guys 😌
and, ok, realistically I don’t think Arwen has fully come out or anything at the time of my comics but I wanted to include her anyway - and before anyone comes at me about how kids can’t be gay or whatever I’ll remind you that no one seems to have this problem with kids in other cartoons getting obligatory het crushes all the time, and in my own experience some people just figure themselves out a lot sooner than others (personally I didn’t find the right label til I was 20 but looking back the signs were there since I was 11 lol). anyway Arwen is quite introspective and searching as a person, so I think she’s got this a little bit figured out by now, even if she’ll probably be keeping it to herself for a while. there’s no way she’s talking about her thoughts on romance if Mattie’s in the vicinity

SADIE SADIE SADIE I HAVE AN IDEA
Imagine Lauren... but in the Mum swap au
Kaisa would know about her probably since she and Johanna were close friends but would she try and look for Lauren? What happens when Lauren comes back, and it threatens the life she’s had to build with Hilda?
(If you don’t know what Mum swap is please ignore my rambling, I just have a lot of brain rot today XD)
Soooo I was really hyped to get this ask because I LOVE mumswap, but then I forgot about it for ages LMAO. Anyways, Caleb and I talked about a few different ways Lauren could be incorporated into the AU, and we ended up with around three options I think, but in the end, we came up with this-
Lauren runs away at the same time as she does in her canon timeline - before Hilda is born, and before Johanna leaves Trollberg. So she was gone before the whole Johanna-gets-deathly-sick-and-Kaisa-steals-a-child thing, meaning she has no idea she even has a little sister. She leaves for similar reasons to her canon, which I won’t get into because they might conflict with the mumswap timeline (see this is what I meant in this post when I said Lauren is THIS close to breaking the timeline). Her time in the wilderness doesn’t change, as this doesn’t involve any mumswap characters, it’s when she comes home that the changes become more prevalent -
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lauren comes home and reunites with Johanna a while after Hilda and Kaisa come to Trollberg, but before any Johanna-is-Hilda’s-bio-mum reveals. The kids know The Librarian fairly well at this point, well enough to be reasonably surprised when a grown woman claiming to be her daughter shows up out of nowhere
But Johanna quells any of their worries - and she’s delighted to have Lauren back, and given everything she’s lost, she’s….a little protective (and very affectionate)
Tumblr media
With all that in mind, Lauren becomes a familiar face around the library, and many other parts of Trollberg, as her endless hunt for a stable job leads her all around the city. She adores Hilda and the kids, and is always happy to help them out on their adventures.
In terms of how this effects Kaisa-
Tumblr media
We thought it would be fun to go the comedic route with this
Lauren and Kaisa know eachother, which means in order for shit not to hit the fan, the two of them can’t meet. However unlike Johanna, Lauren is not confined to the Library, so they’re more likely to come in close contact. But by some insane coincidence, they keep just missing eachother
Hilda, doesn’t notice anything off about this, she has no reason to believe she’s connected to The librarian or her daughter. As for Kaisa…
Tumblr media
Yeah there may be a slight communication issue there
Lauren, of course, isn’t sceptical either, why should she suspect anything from the cute little girl who frequents the Library? There’s nothing suspicious about any of this
Tumblr media
Right?
As you’ve probably notice by this point, Lauren’s design changes for the mumswap au! This post is pretty long already so I won’t include it here, but I do have a full ref for her! And I’ve got at least one more doodle I’m working on for this AU…
You’ve probably already noticed this but for this ask and the upcoming ref, I incorporated aspects of @calebs-hangout-corner’s style! It was very fun to do, and I really like this style so I’ll probably steal some of this stuff permanently :))
Tumblr media
Mumswap is one of my favourite AUs and it was really fun to develop Lauren for it! Thank you so much for the ask!!

His Dark Materials Season 2, Episode 3 - Rambling/Thoughts (SPOILERS)
You all know the drill by now, bullet points etc. Etc. I may miss some things out because I’m just rambling and going off what I can remember, please bear with me!
Lyra getting ready to go and see Mary but not telling Will omg honey no you should tell him things!
I started laughing at Pan protesting about the bag and then Lyra cutting him off by closing it XD
Will was reading THE LETTERS :’( John Parry loved Will and Elaine so much I’m-
Mary is trying to protect Lyra even though she’s only known her for a day, and I am all for it, I love that Lyra keeps picking up surrogate parents like this 😂
“What a wonderful moustache” - OMFG LYRA 😂 and the little smile afterwards - GOLDEN
Lyra was doing so well at lying up until she slipped up about Will :/
Oh god the police are after Lyra AND Will now, that’s not good D:
I shouldn’t have laughed so hard at the “police” guy chasing her and shouting at one of the people at the university “STOP HER”, only for the response to be “NO RUNNING!!”
Oh honey no, not in Boreal’s car!
Also Pan in a bird form somehow managing to keep up with the moving vehicle is a thing?? Okay??
As soon as Lyra got out of that car, I was like “HER BAG. ALETHIOMETER. HE TOOK IT” - AND I WAS RIGHT?!?
IOREK IOREK IOREK
The fact that the ice caps of Svalbard are melting because of the tear in the sky and the heat emitting from it, and now the bears are running out of food :(
I love how Iorek was walking away and then when Kaisa mentioned Lyra he immediately turned back around 😭 that bear loves and cares for her so much I can’t-
Will seeing that there’s someone in the tower... oh god it’s happening soon, IT is going to happen soon...
Lee looking bored and as soon as the drunk guy finished talking, just going “... Well that was QUITE a story. ANYWAY...” 😂
That fucking lemur dæmon, can we just not?!?
As soon as that guy started spouting about heretics and everything, I immediately was like “run Lee, go!!!”
I audibly screamed when Lee got shot at
In his defense, he was shooting in self defense but also he feels so guilty at killing a man :(
Hester watching as the lemur dæmon faded into Dust omg
I audibly screamed again when the Monkey grabbed/smacked Hester like I literally was so scared??
Lee admitting that he loves Lyra and that he will do ANYTHING to protect her 😭
“My life is only a tenth of hers” - IM CRYING
That torture scene though was so scary omg
Deadass though, Mrs Coulter is so scary, I know I keep saying it but Ruth Wilson is so gOOD
Lee talking about how his father used to beat him, and how because of it he can take a beating... my heart is so broken. I’m so upset.
But then it happened to Mrs Coulter too??? Oh dear lord my heart can’t take this series I’m-
Hester comforting Lee after him being tortured was so damn sweet
“It’s been a long time since you’ve talked about him” “I know” “you did good” JUST RIP MY HEART OUT IT WOULD HURT LESS
LEE AND HESTER TOUCHING HEADS ASDFGHJKL
Tumblr media
I love the contrast of Hester comforting Lee vs the Monkey hesitantly just taking Mrs Coulter’s hand, almost like he’s afraid to. It’s like he doesn’t know how to comfort her or something??
Also the fact he took her hand 😭😭😭
Tumblr media
Mary giving her niece and nephew musseli bars and being like “it has chocolate, it’s bad for you, I promise” 😂😂
The fact that Lyra tried to hide the fact she was crying when Will found her omg 😭 I love them
WILL AND LYRA WENT TO THE CINEMA OMG JUST LIKE IN THE BOOK?! I THOUGHT THEY’D LEAVE THAT PART OUT IM SO HAPPY
Lyra: *eats popcorn* // Lyra:... *eats more popcorn* // Lyra: This is disGUSTING *eats even more of it*
Will admitting that he was worried about Lyra 😭😭😭
THEY WERE WATCHING PADDINGTON THE MOVIE ARE YOU SERIOUS BBC
Pan peeking his little head out of the bag to watch the film was so cute omg
This scene was basically just a good-hearted murder boy and a feral wild girl on their first date and I’m 100% all for it
And also Pantalaimon watching Paddington bear? Absolutely the crossover this hellfire of a year needed :3
Mrs Coulter helped Lee escape??? I’m... so confused??? But also I kind of understand because she told him to keep Lyra safe so...
Like I really love the complexity that this show and Ruth Wilson are bringing to Mrs Coulter, I’m so for it and I really love it
MARY IS MAKING A BREAKTHROUGH I HAVE LITERAL CHILLS
The fact Boreal has security cameras and knew exactly when Will and Lyra were outside his door o_O
Boreal is just a NASTY motherfucker dear lord
Lyra FINALLY realizing that she’s met Boreal before at the party back in London though like omg finally
“I want you to get something for me” OH SHIT THE KNIFE THE KNIFE THE KNIFE
THE PROMO FOR NEXT WEEK OH MY GOD OH MY GOD WILL IS GOING TO GET THE KNIFE, HE’S GONNA FIGHT AND WIN IT, AND WE’RE GONNA MEET JOHN PARRY OFFICIALLY OMG OMG

Muahahahah! Here we go again!
THE SHIPPING EXTRAVAGANZA DAY 2
(Hilda)
(Please note, I will not do ships that have huge age gaps or are considered illegal/immoral) This time it’s the Hilda fandom! Let’s see what we have!
Frilda! Frida/Hilda:
This one is cute honestly! And I mean the whole ‘I’m your familiar’ stuff is just SO GAY. LIKE WHAT- To reference these guys are only like twelve so I suffice to say I ship them when they’re older, like late teens. I ship it a lot!
Frida/David:
I agree with my friend, they are pretty cute. Again ship them when they’re older, don’t see a ton of chemistry, just lots of cuteness. I ship it somewhat.
Hilda/David:
Makes sense actually, and they would have awesome chemistry. Like “Hey David! Let’s go do *dangerous thing*!” And then David says “Oh no here we go again-”. Kinda cute but I don’t personally ship it. Still ship worthy though.
Frida/Hilda/David:
Ooh a poly! I mean I can totally see their friendship becoming something romantic. Full group chemistry? Or just good interactions? Well duh totally. I like it, but not a huge shipper of it personally.
Gerdanna! Gerda/Johanna:
Okay cute and total power couple vibes. Enough said.
Gerda/Kaisa:
Not shipped as much, but it feels like sketchbook with a little more frick Alhberg and I will murder you if you hurt my librarian.
Sketchbook! Kaisa/Johanna:
Ah yes, what most of my blog is devoted to. Love them, love how they would interact, love everything about this! SKETCHBOOK FOR LIFE. PLUS LIKE- WHY NOT. It’s adorable and I ship it one hundred percent.
Gerda/Kaisa/Johanna:
Another poly! But this one combines all the ships listed above! Love all the silliness that goes along with this and it’s honestly super cute! Ship it for sure!
Bellkeeper/Woodman:
More of a crackship? But someone made a literally amazing fic about these two, which was awesome. Plus they are super similar. Not cute per say but cool.
Alfur/Johanna:
Sorta goes along with stories where Alfur is secretly Hilda’s dad who got turned into an elf. Makes sense sorta?... I don’t ship it but cool.
Alfur/Bartell:
Haha, honestly just makes for silly situations. Plus Alfur would be that oh.... how do I cope with my crush.... I KNOW LETS RIGHT A BUNCH OF CONTRACTS! Ship.
Alfur/Adeline:
Also ship. It’s like total nerd love and that episode in s2? Cuteeee.
Alfur/Bartell/Adeline:
Also cute, feels a bit like this is just mixing both but I can sorta see it. How about this “Adeline’s first pigeon ride.” The chaos that would ensue- Hahaha!
And that’s all I got at the moment! Do tell me if I missed anything in this fandom! Tune in next time for A Certain Scientific Railgun!
Edit: I JUST REALIZED IT DIDNT POST YESTERDAY BECAUSE I HIT SAVE AS DRAFT- SORRY, ANYWAYS HERE!
Edit 2: I THINK I FIXED ALL THE TYPOS AND FLIPPED PARAGRAPHS. MAYBE.

So I’ve been thinking more about Hilda (because duh) and I came up with a Future HC/AU
I’m tentatively calling it the Librarian!HC because the idea is that when David, Frida and Hilda grow up they all replace Kaisa at the Trollburg Library, each of them taking on different aspects of the overall job to collectively be the best in the business. Spoilers for S2 of course.
David: The Librarian
-He’s literally just a normal librarian.
-Hard pass on all those adventures, thanks tho.
-Best Librarian there ever was though. He knows what book someone needs just by looking at them. Not even necessarily the one they want, the one they need.
--With Frida and Hilda he’s even better, with the stack ready before they even walk in the door.
-Everyone thinks he’s got some sort of magic, but he’s actually just INCREDIBLY intuitive and perceptive.
-One dude swears up and down the wall he saw an army of ants bringing him a book once. Frida laughs and says “Of course he did. Bugs love David.” “So he does have magic?” “Oh no not at all!” The poor guy leaves more confused than when he first asked. With the right book though.
Frida: The Witch
-Frequently goes out adventuring with Hilda (spoilers: her familiar) to solve problems for those in need.
-Her witch-training thesis (if we could compare it to college classes, which I am) was using several complex spells she made herself to map out the Nowhere Space, not to mention her diplomatic skills to convince the Nisse to let her in the first place.
-- It turns out fine, because only Frida can actually read it anyway. She uses it to jump across the world extremely quickly. The Nisse are a little miffed, but it’s not like they can make her un-know it, and she’s very respectful so they let it slide.
--Eventually it gets to the point where she can use the Nowhere Space as efficiently as a Nisse, no map required, so she lets the Witch Council have it (they’ll never figure it out).
Hilda: The Familiar
-Again, no shock, they say it in the show.
-Hilda’s familiar final exam was to protect Frida, who was not allowed to defend herself in any way, from anything the Council can think to throw at her.
--Hilda says if they wanted to make it fair she could tie one of her hands behind her back. Frida snorts.
--She of course kicks butt.
-Handles the more physical side of adventures while Frida gets the intellectual. Neither views the other as lesser for it of course.
--Fight off the zombie hoard? Done. Climb cliff face to grab ancient relic? She’s already halfway up. Big chasm? Lasso across, Frida in her arms.
-She’s ripped by the way.
The three of them together are the most effective at the job the witches have ever seen. Kaisa and Tildy endlessly brag about it to the Council.
Feel free to send me any other ideas you have! This is about all I’ve got right now.

As High As The Moon Above
The first work so far of a Hilda AU I’ve written centered around Kaisa and Johanna but as childhood friends (which I’ve titled the Spellbound AU)! Hope ya’ll enjoy!
Pairing: Sketchbook Ship (Kaisanna)
Words: 5.5k
AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/33556615/chapters/83380660
Summary: Kaisa must practice casting a new spell before her next training session with her teacher, Tildy. In response, her best friend Johanna, unbeknownst that Kaisa is training to become a witch, offers to take her along on a camping trip outside the wall of Trolberg to help her concentrate.
A cart of books strolled and squeaked through the halls of the Trolberg library. The keeper of the books went about their business reshelving heaps upon heaps of returned literature, glimpsing every aisle they passed with most having little to no visitors browsing the shelves. They eventually spot a girl in a black cardigan and purple dress, complimented by her short black hair, muttering as she struggled to return a single book into a column two spaces above her head. The librarian lets go of the cart to approach the tiptoeing visitor.
“I can help with that, Kaisa,” they offered warmly. “Please, allow me.”
“No, that’s okay.” The girl spoke in a heavy Nordic accent. “Almost got it…” She grunted again before successfully sliding her book through the shelf. “There.”
The librarian noticed a stack of other books carried around Kaisa’s arm as she walked away to the next aisle. Thinking that she would turn down her assistance if she offered again, the librarian simply grinned and nodded, returning to her cart to reshelve on their own.
Kaisa was now at the second floor with her books. One might think she was merely volunteering to aid in the librarian’s duties, but in truth, she spent half the day at the library to read as many books as she possibly could. Some were finished cover-to-cover, others she only read half way through, but promised to come back for until she was absorbed enough to borrow and reread them home; only in the library could she bring herself to finish a book in its entirety.
She made it to the end of the second floor’s hall where a bookshelf had a column within reach, as well as space between other books, which luckily for Kaisa was meant for all the books on her pile alone, and slid every book into it at once before heaving a sigh of relief.
Onto the next stack she could gather, thinking to herself. But out of nowhere, a feeling of suspicion coincided with her imagination and stood frozen before the bookshelf. Kaisa began pulling out books slightly and placing them back a second after. She hummed, now peering behind the gap between the walls and bookcase and ran her hand through the edges, all the while someone new was walking towards her direction.
“…Oh, there you are!” another person’s voice spoke jubilantly behind her. “Almost thought you left already, been looking everywhere for you.”
Kaisa turned around; the voice was all too familiar. In front of her was a girl the same age as she was, brown hair that tied into a ponytail and wearing a Sparrow Scout uniform. She smiled as she stood, bringing excitement to Kaisa’s heart.
“You’re back from your badge work!” her whole face lit up.
“Yep! Just earned my Geology Badge today, so that’s one more to my sash and for the ceremony.” The Sparrow Scout explained proudly.
“Stolt över dig, Johanna.” Kaisa applauded. “And the badge ceremony is soon, right?”
“Well, it’s only a month from now.” Johanna pointed out. “Actually, I was hoping you would be able to come and attend, if you won’t be busy, of course.”
Kaisa reached for the brunette’s hand and held it up with both her palms. “I would not miss it for anything.” She guaranteed excitedly, making her best friend blush and glance away overjoyed.
“…So, um, what have you been up to?” Johanna asked. “…apart from reading that is.”
“I was looking for secret doors in the library.” Kaisa explained, turning back to the bookshelf. “There must be whole other rooms with more books hidden in the shelves somehow.”
Johanna walked closer to the colossal shelf of literature and helped inspect with Kaisa. “Have you tried pulling every book like it was a lever?” she suggested, also wanting to be inquisitive of rooms behind the library walls.
“Almost all of them, yes.” Kaisa nodded. “Do you think this might be the wrong shelf?”
“Personally, the library is already kinda big on its own. It’ll take ages to find where the right one is.” Johanna admitted. “But hey, if we don’t find them, you can always add them when you become the future librarian.”
“You know…” Kaisa turned back to Johanna. “That’s exactly what I’ll do…!”
Johanna had known Kaisa’s dreams of being the keeper of books for as long as she could remember. She enjoyed visiting the Trolberg library just as much as anyone else, but she never met anybody who treated it like it was their own home the same way Kaisa did. One could write a fairytale of a girl who lived here, she thought at one point, and wanted to be the protagonist adventurer who would come to befriend her. That idea came back to her briefly as she faced an enthusiastic Kaisa, and for that reason, she giggled quietly; the fairytale might actually be true.
Before the two girls could continue their conversation, a figure stood over and caught their attention. They looked up on a woman suiting a long, sophisticated gray dress and a decorative hat reminiscent to what witch’s wear.
“Oh, hello Arch Sorcer…I MEAN Tildy…” Kaisa stammered. “What brings you here…?”
The woman smiled warmly at the girl to reassure her tension. “Nothing much, my dear.” She spoke in a gentle tone. “Just came looking for a book to bring home and all.”
She peeped over the closest bookshelf and quickly skimmed through it before pulling out a novel that read The Skeleton Whisperer on the cover. “Ah yes, this will do.” she said. “I suppose you’re here continuing extra work on your training.”
“Yes, ma’am.” Kaisa gave a half smile. “I just finished, but I can continue if you insist that I do…”
“No need to stress.” Tildy assured. “I know you’ve worked quite hard today. Catch your breath and continue your studies tomorrow.” She turned her attention to Johanna. “You and your friend deserve the time to respite.”
The sorceress-in-secret kneeled down to Kaisa and whispered on her ear. “Also, I couldn’t help but overhear your suggestions on secret rooms,” she continued. “I think it’s a great idea. We’ll talk about it with the Committee next time we head down the tower.”
And with her borrowed book, the mysterious woman walked onwards. “Adieu, children.” She said before making her way downstairs with her borrowed book.
“See you soon madame Pilqu…Tildy, I mean.” Kaisa also bid farewell.
“I thought you were just here waiting before we could hang out.” Johanna expressed.
“I was.” retorted Kaisa. “But I tried catching up with some studies, too, for when I meet with Tildy again.”
“Who was she anyway?” asked Johanna. “She seemed very…enigmatic, sort of, but sweet.”
“She’s my teacher.” Kaisa answered. “I took up her apprenticeship long ago, but I’m not allowed to talk about it too much...”
Johanna could fathom; never once had Kaisa talked about any apprenticeship before. She now looked distressed once she saw her teacher was here, stroking down her locks to the point her bangs nearly covered her eyes. The Sparrow Scout could feel her frown forming by seeing Kaisa’s own, now wishing to know much about this part of her friend’s life she had not known previously.
“Do you not get along with her, Kaisa?” asked Johanna.
“Oh, she’s actually really nice to me, kind of like my farmor.” she replied. “It’s just that…Well, I don’t know…” she paused, squirming from hesitation. She said it herself, she was not allowed to talk about her sessions with Tildy, whether it was what she was being taught or what she was even learning to become. But she knew Johanna will be left with loads of questions if she did not reveal much about her apprenticeship starting now.
Kaisa sighed, maybe she did not have to reveal a lot of the truth to Johanna if she really wanted to explain her vexation. “So, look, there’s this sort of… “routine” we’ll call it, that Tildy is letting me practice until next week.” she continued. “As usual, I need to prepare by studying a lot first, but it’s hard to actually practice where I live. There’s not enough privacy to do the routine with my mum around, and if I don’t get it right when I meet Tildy, well, I’m afraid I’ll disappoint her…”
Almost instantly, Johanna brainstormed the perfect solution to Kaisa’s ordeal. “Wait a sec, Kaisa, I know exactly how you can practice.” she beamed. “But the catch is, I might have to accompany you the whole time.”
“What do you mean?” Kaisa asked.
“I’ll be going camping this weekend!” clarified Johanna. “My parents allowed me to go so I can prepare for my camping badge, but what they don’t know is that I plan to settle outside the walls.” she extended her hand and swung it across. “I’m going as far away from the city as I can, remote into the wilderness, and maybe just close enough to my grandad’s old house if I’m lucky. And to top it off, you can come with me!”
Kaisa’s face went white. “So you’re saying I should I join you…in going outside the walls?”
“Yep, exactly!” Johanna expressed. “Think about it, there will still be time to prepare and see your teacher after you’re done practicing in the trip, and no one else can find you practicing in the wilderness. Besides, it’ll be fun with just you and me in the outdoors!”
“Oh, I don’t know, Johanna…” Kaisa faltered. “I could…But it sounds a bit risky. And you would still be around when I start practicing, so that’s still a problem for me.”
“Well, it’s no worries then,” the brunette reassured. “It was just worth the suggestion, but I understand.”
A bit of quietness befell for the two girls. Kaisa glanced away and envisioned Johanna’s planned escapade outside the walls. Maybe letting her leave while being the only person to know about it was not such a good idea. Anything could happen in the wilderness, and Kaisa shuddered to think what harm would come to Johanna when she could have personally protected her the same way she would if they camped together.
Kaisa returned to glancing at Johanna. “Promise me you will not tell anyone about my training…?” she said.
Johanna gasped and smiled all at once. “Don’t worry, you can trust me.” she swore.
Kaisa grabbed hold of Johanna’s shoulders. “Johanna, no one can ever know about what I practice.” she continued with visible anxiety in her complexion. “I will get in trouble, and it will be worse for you, and something bad will happen to both of us somehow.” her voice became twice as strained and her grip slowly tightened. “Jag kan inte förlåta mig själv…!”
“Kaisa, listen, it’s going to be okay…” Johanna’s tone was light and calm, guiding Kaisa’s hands to let go. “Look, I may not understand everything about your apprenticeship or your routine, but your teacher said no need to stress. Well, I’m saying it too.” She elevated her posture. “I promise as your best friend to not only help you, but to also never tell a single soul of our adventure, nor what I’ll see regarding your training during it.” She finalized with a Sparrow Scout’s salute.
Kaisa grinned, feeling relief course through her mind. “Thank you.” She spoke softly. “I’ll stop worrying now.”
“Alright, let’s go then,” Johanna chuckled. “The park’s waiting for us. We’ll talk more about our trip there.”
Every day went by slowly for Kaisa, but the weekend finally came for her and Johanna to head out into the wilderness. However, even the hours of the day went by just as slowly when she waited for the Sparrow Scout to come by her house. She was in her room filling her pack with her own essential needs that were instructed for her to bring in a camping trip. The only thing not packed in her luggage was her wand with an amethyst pommel, which she kept hidden under her cardigan.
Whether it was going to be in the camping trip or when they were older, Kaisa knew that Johanna was going to discover she was a witch this whole time. The vague routine she said she hoped to practice was in fact a spell which of course involved her wand, an incantation and some magic. She trembled at the fact that there was no point of return in continuing to hide the truth from Johanna after the library visit. It was not just that there were punishments and compromises to a witch’s identity being revealed, but would her best friend still even want to be friends with someone who is capable of influencing the paranormal like her? Even if she had doubts of her own strength, would just being a witch-in-training be enough to scare her and split their friendship apart?
It made Kaisa’s head spin and groan every time. If there was one thing she hoped to do as a witch, it was the power to predict other people’s choices and wishes, that way she would never have to endure the pain of overthinking about the company in her present or future ever again.
Behind her, a knock on the window thudded twice. Kaisa quickly turned to see Johanna on the other side, no longer in her uniform but rather in a red and blue flannel above her overalls while her long, swaying hair spilled down her shoulders, waving her hand with the brightest smile on her face.
“Ready for our camping trip, Kaisa?” she asked, her voice softened from the glass pane.
Kaisa rushed to open the window. “Am I supposed to jump out through here?” she asked back, realizing Johanna did not stop by the front door.
“Mhm.” The brunette nodded. “We’ll be much faster exiting the walls with this route.”
“My mum’s not even home,” Kaisa pointed out. “It wouldn’t matter as much.”
“Does she also know you’re heading out today?” Johanna diverted.
“Yes, of course she does.” Kaisa answered.
The brunette gestured to leave. “No time to waste, then.”
Kaisa chuckled and shook her head in amusement. While hurrying to take her pack, Johanna made room for her to climb out and reclose the window, then rushing as fast as they could into the city’s portion of the forestland to avoid attention.
One of the exits out of the walls was just nearby, and the pair made it with nothing stopping their way. No traffic of vehicles driving into the city, no guards surveilling the entrance, just a mere traffic stop standing dormant on the gate to halt anyone from entering and exiting. Quickly, the two girls ran like the wind, hoping they were not spotted by Bellkeepers and citizens in general, finally ending up in the outside world to trek on their own.
“We still have a long way to go,” Johanna said. “The perfect camping ground should be yonder…”
Johanna continued walking a few paces, but Kaisa stopped to look back at the gate to Trolberg still nearby. She could feel her eyes welling up and her heart pounding out her chest as every second of her fear grew. Not often was she outside, but the wilderness was a whole new scenario that she wished she prepared more for. She did not want to leave for Johanna’s safety, but it was so easy for her to feel afraid in these surroundings. The Sparrow Scout herself looked back and noticed Kaisa frozen in uncertainty.
“Hey, we’ll to be okay,” Johanna hurried to comfort her best friend. “I promise I’ll protect you. I won’t let anything hurt us in this trip.”
Kaisa whimpered and stared back at Johanna. The anxiety etched on her face was contagious to the brunette and stung her heart, but she forced a smile and sneakily grabbed Kaisa’s hand.
“I’ll hold onto you the entire time we’re out here, that way we’ll both feel safe,” she entangled her fingers with Kaisa’s.
Something sparkled in Kaisa’s eyes when she saw her hand grasping her best friend’s. She did not say a word, but a warm smile finally carved on her face and was enough for Johanna to know that she will be okay. The two pressed on, Johanna remained ahead while Kaisa was behind her, their hands still holding and keeping them close together.
They hiked a chartless trail among the forestlands where the leaves changing color from summer to fall was ever so present, and the sunshine beamed infinite rays of its light through the trees trying to cover it. Kaisa was lost in thought, appreciating the view of the forest; she turned her head in all directions and felt a wave of reassurance with every view, made even more so with Johanna taking the lead as she hummed a tune. Seeing she was still holding Kaisa’s hand, the witch-in-secret recalled what Johanna had said earlier about protecting each other, something she could not stop thinking at all, but wanted to address as casually as she could.
“Hey, Johanna…” Kaisa called.
“Yes, Kaisa?”
“Do you ever think humans could become familiars?”
“You mean like the ones witches have?” Johanna asked back. “Well, I’m not sure… It would be pretty neat if they could, though.”
“I agree,” Kaisa said. “It wouldn’t be common, but talking with a human familiar would sure feel like less work.”
“Yep,” Johanna retorted. “Wait just a minute…” her tone grew wary.
Kaisa gulped, feeling nervous of what Johanna intended to say. “Y-Yeah…?”
“Imagine if one us became a witch’s familiar!” Johanna’s eyes lit up.
The corner of Kaisa’s mouth quirked up and giggled, mostly out of relief. “You’d actually want to become one?”
“Sure, why not?!” Johanna replied. “Think of all the cool spells you get to help a witch out on. If I was a familiar, I would never ever leave their side, constantly aiding them…kind of like I am with you!”
The girl behind her blushed. “That’s good to know…” she whispered, hoping Johanna would not turn to see the glee on her reddened complexion.
Miles and miles of trees and rivers were wandered through by the duo until they grew eventually tired. When both the sun and sky glowed a warm tinge of orange, the time came to build their camp, far away from the nearest residence of Trolberg.
“Right, this should be good, I think,” said Johanna, letting go of her pack and rummaging through the compartment holding her tent. “Can you help build the tent with me, Kaisa?”
“Can do.” Kaisa nodded.
The land which Johanna and Kaisa settled in was a flat and grassy plane surrounded by the corners of the forest in a crescent shape. Beyond the breach of the crescent was more verdant terrain which stretched onto the large gray mountains ahead. It was the perfect camping ground to pick for those beginning to camp out on their own, and both Johanna and Kaisa wasted no time hoisting their tent cloth and holding it together with ropes, stakes and rods.
Having practiced building a tent back home and during Sparrow Scout activities, along with having Kaisa’s assistance, Johanna finished constructing the tent for the two before the sun was even down.
“Don’t worry, it will be more comfortable on the inside than it looks on the outside.” Johanna spoke, wiping away a drop sweat on her head.
“I think it looks comfy already.” Kaisa said. “Well done!”
“Couldn’t have done it without your help, though.” She pulled Kaisa closer to her, making her chuckle.
Their belongings and sleeping bags were settled in their tent, and a bonfire was built by Johanna with foliage and twigs to give them warmth. It was as though her retreat needed for her camping badge had already happened if one could realize the adeptness of which she put together the camp, but her days as a Sparrow Scout had in fact prepared her for fun, spontaneous trips in the wilderness.
Until the sky totally darkened, the two kept themselves busy with conversations of the week they had after seeing each other in the library, which new books they have read, and enjoyed cups of hot cocoa from a tin canister Johanna packed along. With all the goings-on being enjoyed since they left Trolberg, Kaisa almost forgot that she intended to continue her witch training while she was camping with the brunette. The scene in the tent surrounded by the orange light of the lantern, filling the air with laughter and merriment, was all Kaisa and Johanna could ever hope to cherish together, but it was best that the witch-in-secret began her training as soon as she could.
“Okay, Johanna, I should probably start now.” Kaisa said, rising from her spot in the tent.
“Alright, good luck!” Johanna cheered. “If anything bad happens, shout as loud as you can to call me.”
Kaisa stepped out of the tent. Immediately, another wave of fear coursed through her mind and made her quiver in place by the tent’s entrance. She was overthinking once more; what if a Troll was out and near to the camp? What if there was a Barghest on the run? Every monster from every folklore that she had ever read could be out to harm her and Johanna in this hour. She withdrew her wand from her cardigan and clenched it tightly with both hands. Kaisa reminded herself that even if danger was nearby, she would be first to protect Johanna like she hoped she would, and Johanna will do the same if she herself was threatened.
She took small steps away from the tent, far enough that Johanna would not notice any magic ensuing. A full moon was rising, and Kaisa looked up. It captivated her, and her ability to use magic should be as strong as ever, she thought.
Taking a deep breath, it was time for the levitation spell.
“Bara fokusera…” she spoke to herself softly. “Gå så högt som månen ovan….”
Soon, she closed her eyes and opened her palm, holding it upwards by her chest. The tip of her wand glowed a purple spec of light and atop her palm, then twirled it in circles over and over. She whispered an incantation that Tildy taught her, being just one sentence of incomprehensible words to non-witches, and repeated it again until the whole spell was set in motion. As the wand circled more and more, sparkles exuded out from nowhere until a purple aura sheathed the outlines of her physique.
“As high as the moon above…” she whispered.
Suddenly, Johanna exited the tent to sit by the campfire. Kaisa was out of sight, but the brunette did not plan on finding her no matter how much she wanted to see this “routine” she was practicing. The concentration and privacy which her best friend said she lacked was all that mattered to Johanna. She spread her hands around the warmth of the blaze, but even before she could fully respite, she heard the leaves rustle in the forestland ahead. The brunette looked up and squinted at nothing but silhouettes and darkness.
Leaning in a bit forward, she finally realized what was apparently coming forward. It was a large, bulky figure; its eye glowing in a nearly strong luminosity of white. Johanna’s heart was racing, there was no way it could be what she thought it was. But as the figure revealed more of itself among the forestland, it was indeed the worst possible thing for the camping trip: a large Troll rummaging through the wilderness.
Johanna yelped, but quickly covered her mouth to avoid getting the Troll’s attention. She got up from her seat by the fire and hurried to find Kaisa’s training spot, panickily whispering her name. To her relief, she found her just standing still behind the tent, but immediately froze out of a whole different feeling of concern.
Kaisa’s eyes remained shut and muttered to herself while a big spark of light glimmered above her hand, holding and swirling her wand evenly. She seemed to be in her own world now, completely detached from the surroundings around her. Johanna failed to approach or even say a word to the witch as she realized how apprehensive she felt towards what was happening. When she thought she had enough to be confused about, she looked over her limbs to realize that a purple aura glowed around her body. Her feet began to rise up slightly from the ground and glanced ahead to see that Kaisa, despite maintaining the same posture, was also levitating; terror now overtook Johanna’s face.
Then, Kaisa stopped her wand from spinning, and her open hand stretched high into the sky. The two girls continued lifting up ever so slowly from the ground, their feet could reach the tip of their tent, and soon they were as high as the top of a tree. Johanna flailed her arms and legs sporadically when it seemed like they soared upward enough, still too afraid to ask Kaisa what was going on.
The witch opened one eye to see how far up she was, then the other to realize Johanna in front of her. Her pupils shrank in a state of fright and her jaw went slack. Out of all the mistakes she had expected to make, picking up Johanna with her own spell was the last yet most severe one she could ever think to fall through.
“Oh no, oh no no no no…!” Kaisa whimpered. “I…I did not mean to…!”
Johanna shushed and pointed downwards to their campsite. As Kaisa gawked down, her pulse stopped to the sight of a Troll peeking into their tent. It drew back to find out no one was inside, then turned to the fire and stared at it for a while. It finally took a seat, emitting a large thud on the ground like a single-second quake upon resting.
Kaisa looked back at her best friend in fear, letting her eyes ask what on earth they should do now. Johanna fathomed, nodding to reassure that they were probably safer up in the sky, and gestured both her hands lightly to signify holding them in place with whatever Kaisa was making them float with.
The witch fought to keep it together. Her breath was instable and the palm holding her wand began to sweat. If she could focus long enough and ward off the wish to descend back on the ground, all the while halting to recite her incantation which helped her concentrate, she could try having her and Johanna stay hovering in the air for as long as she wanted.
Kaisa’s expression hardened and pointed her wand towards Johanna. She swung her arm backwards in a single quick motion, causing Johanna to gasp as she floated over to the witch. Kaisa gave the brunette a tight embrace, one so warm and protective that it felt inescapable to be let go from.
“Please, don’t be mad.” Kaisa could only bring herself to plead. “I did not focus that well. I could have done even worse to us had I---”
The tension felt within Johanna was lost to Kaisa’s voice and embrace, and her eyes closed, hugging her best friend back. “It’s okay, Kaisa.” she interrupted. “Just that…this…is a lot to take in…” the conversations about witch familiars and training with privacy all made sense now.
“’I’m sorry…” Kaisa nestled her face onto Johanna’s shoulder. She looked back down at the campsite and saw the Troll keeping warm with their fire, motionless like the rock that it was. “We are going to be up here all night…”
Johanna let go from their embrace so she could face Kaisa, still holding onto her shoulders. “Do you think there is a way we could get the troll to move out?” she asked.
“I’m not sure if I am able to…” Kaisa admitted. “Not unless we let it know where we are.”
Johanna looked back down; the Troll did nothing, only seemingly entranced by the fire as it gazed on it. She thought about how she wanted to warm herself earlier, and her eyes dilated upon realizing what the Troll only seemed to want as well.
“If it’s not the troll we can do something about directly, we’re just going to have to take out the fire.” Johanna said.
Kaisa caught up with the plan. “I got it.” she nodded. “Leave it to me then.”
With her wand still at hand, she pointed the tip towards the campfire and concentrated on hitting anything but the Troll or their tent accidentally. The easiest thing she could bring herself to do with magic was release a streak of energy from her wand, and she hoped that blasting the campfire with her specific sort of ammunition could take out the fire and bid the Troll farewell.
Deep breath…Eyes locked…The light on the tip of Kaisa’s wand glowed purple once more until it grew as bright as a star, then it hurled down from the wand in high speed. Barely a second later, the energy from Kaisa’s magic crashed into the campfire, exploding into a gradient of purple, white and orange, and nothing but a gleaming mist blanketed a portion of the camp. The Troll got up in shock, fists tightly clenched and glaring in all directions to search for what threatened it; Johanna and Kaisa watched from above in hopes it would not look up.
When the mist quickly dispersed, the Troll looked down on the rubble of wood which used to be the campfire keeping it warm. It hummed a deep, disappointed tone, and stomped the ground so stridently that the two girls in the air could almost feel the tremor. No one appeared to be around it for miles, hence the Troll finally made its way back to the forestlands to search for another source of warmth in the wilderness.
“Yes, it worked…!” Johanna expressed.
The witch breathed a sigh of relief. “Do you think it will come back?” she asked.
“Let’s hope it doesn’t.” Johanna answered. “We’ll leave the campfire be, we still got the tent to keep us warm.”
With all the exhilaration fully coursing through Kaisa’s mind, the purple aura around her and Johanna faded away. They only had a second to see the spell had worn off before being weighed down by gravity, screaming and falling from the height of a two-story building before Kaisa raised her wand to reactivate the levitation spell. The two of them gnashed their teeth and their eyes shut tightly, just before peeking around to see they were hovering only an inch above the ground.
Kaisa allowed the spell to cast off, and the glow of her wand and from their physiques dissipated for the last time tonight. She and Johanna dipped onto the floor with their backs flatly lied down, groaning when they picked themselves back up.
Johanna felt unsure if anything she had just experienced after leaving her tent was even real. She stared at Kaisa hiding her wand away, then at all the leftover mist and sparkles on what used to be their campfire.
“Kaisa…this whole time…you were a…” Johanna’s eyes lit up.
Kaisa sighed. “Surprise.” she giggled tiredly. “I’m sorry I kept this secret from you, Johanna. I really could not say anything.”
Kaisa’s breathing was concise and hasty. All of a sudden, she collapsed on her knees and held the ground to keep her up. To Johanna’s shock, she hurried to carry her back up and wrap her hand over her shoulder. The energy used up to perform the levitation spell took a toll on the witch-in-training. It was unlike anything she had ever accomplished before.
As soon as they entered their tent, Johanna laid Kaisa down on her sleeping bag and pillow. The Sparrow Scout grabbed a canister of fresh water and filled the cap almost to the brim, bringing it over to the witch and allowed her to drink as much as she needed.
“Thank you.” Kaisa whispered, closing her eyes and lying back down.
Johanna kept staring upon Kaisa in a near unconscious state, hoping she could still listen to her before she inevitably fell asleep. “Look, Kaisa…” she spoke. “…I know your spell did not work the way you wanted when I showed up, but you did save us from the Troll in the end. I really should be thanking you…”
A corner of Kaisa’s mouth lifted. However, the soft grin on her face was short-lived, “But now I will never get the spell right on time…” she lamented, feeling the exhaustion overtaking her slowly.
Johanna had so many questions she was dying to have answered, if only she could ask them now. In any case, witch or no witch, Kaisa was still the same best friend Johanna had since forever, and while she knew she could never make her magic and identity known to others, she could not wait to be there for Kaisa the next time she trained to become a witch.
“We don’t have to leave after tomorrow,” Johanna said softly. “We can stay out here for as long as we need until you perfect your spell, and I won’t ever leave your side.”

Those who know good shows may have heard of Hilda, a show on Netflix that recently also got a movie and currently is sheduled for a third season.
I’m a big fan (and I mean BIG) and I’ve personally enjoyed all the of the fan-content I’ve seen here on Tumblr. But now I get the chance to put some of my own stuff here, and I’m going to start with something rather... strange.
It happened just this morning (I’m being serious here), right after I woke up from what arguably is one of the weirdest dreams I’ve had in a loooong while. So weird in fact I’m not sure whether to call it a dream or a nightmare.
It was a dream about the show, but not in the way it currently exists. It was a strange and twisted AU of the show, brewed up by the sleeping vestiges of my creative mind.
Warning, this will get somewhat dark and disturbing.
It starts out with Trollburg, but not the one in the show. This version is located on the side of a mountain and is much smaller, a type of resort town where people come for their vacation. Spirits and trolls exist, but you won’t find any in and around the town. The reason is simple: Trollburg and its people despise all manners of magic and spirits, to the point that all their celebrations are focused on the extermination of all spirits.
Well, one day our titular character, Hilda, moves in with her mom Johanna in her grandfather’s log cabin located in the forest at the outskirts of town (Reverse twist there). Hilda gets into adventures like before, but things are... different.
The whole way that Trollburg works is different. Because of the way the people there have allowed their hatred of spirits to fester, things aren’t all rainbow and sunshine. Dark folk have become attracted to living here, and thus quite a lot of the townfolk are unkind, selfish and downright bad at times; only keeping up facades of kindness for the tourists.
Hilda is introduced to all of this on the day of the Spirit Parade, which replaces the Raven Parade from the show. The parade features floaties depicting caricatures of different spirits, which aat the end of the parade are set on fire. Naturally Hilda, friendly to all manner of spirits, is rather disturbed by this when she finds out.
And it only gets worse from there. But it starts out nice. Hilda tries to get a glimpse of the floaties before the parade the next day, and when doing so she meets two kids her age who are trying to sneak in as well. This introduces Frida and David, childhood friends and sorta-troublemakers? It’s all part of their bid to stop hating magic, and they explain as such to Hilda when she tries to find out what they’re doing there.
Anyways, the Parade passes (don’t recall how it ended in my dream) and Hilda gets to know her friends better. Eventually she learns the somewhat difficult homelives Frida and David have.
Frida is technically an orphan, although her parents are still alive. They treat their daughter horribly, hardly caring for her well being. Frida actually got chased out and made a home for herself in the library’s forgotten attic. She does the odd job here and there for money, but mostly she lives of the streets. Hilda tries to help Frida, but she ends up meeting said girl’s abusive parents when leaving the library. To keep Frida’s hiding place a secret Hilda manages to get the couple in trouble with the librarian, Kaisa (who most definitely isn’t a witch, thank you 😋)
With David things are very different, but not less bad. His parents are rich (like big-mansion-with-pool-and-servants rich) and they wish for their son to follow in their footsteps. David though only wants to be able to decide his own future. However he’s always chickened out of doing anything really rebellious, only going out on small escapades with Frida. Hilda tries to get him to be more daring and drags him out into the woods for an adventure, but in the end it only frightens David more and has him remain in town. (Negative character development)
Hilda also meets some other characters of the show. Tildy The Witch, just as grandmotherly as in the show but dealing with much different forms of magic. In this world Witch Magic is not necesarily good, and some of it deals with very gruesome and dark stuff. Hilda almost unleashes a curse on herself when she meets the enigmatic Woodman, who is much more eldritch-horror-like. She discovers hidden troll caverns in the mountain that house dozens of trolls that were chased into hiding by the original Trollburg founders. Here Hilda actually does some good by helping them find new caverns to expand into, and in return she’s given a rare gemstone that allows her to turn half-troll.
Hilda also has to deal with keeping all her adventures a secret from her mum, who is rather adverse to her daughter’s outgoings with spirits. But this is justified, seeing as Hilda’s father was killed by a spirit years ago.
Hilda also meets some other figures. Vitra that take care of a small bird that actually possesses the power to transport people wherever they want, for a price. The Great Raven, a messenger that brings bad luck and occasionally tells people how they will die. He almost tells Hilda how she’ll die but actually stops after getting to know the kind girl and deciding she doesn’t need to know. (Spoiler: She won’t die of old age)
At some point Hilda actually even time-travels and meets her dad when he was visiting Trollburg! So happy to see him again she ends up telling him about her life in the present, both the good and the bad. Her father, horrified to discover the truth about Trollburg and its people, almost goes as far as to sabotage the lift that is meant to bring people to the top of the mountain during the decennial Founders Celebration. Hilda manages to convince him not to, stating that despite all the bad she doesn’t want anything in the present to change. She’s made some good friends (and even has a crush of Frida) and had some good adventures beside the bad ones.
In the end the rules of time-travel and temporarily broken when Hilda has her father meet her mum from the present. Johanna is given the chance to say goodbye to her husband and her dad is happy to see that despite everything Hilda still has a good family life. In the end Hilda reveals her secret adventures to her mum but Johanna is just relieved to know her daughter is safe.
...And that’s around where I woke up. I’m sure other characters exist as well (The Marra, the Vikings, Alfur,...) and some adventures happen relatively the same (The Storm, Discovering the Nisse and meeting Tontu, The Deerfox,...) but for the most part some things were switched around (Hilda grew up in the city, although she retaints her adventures and chaotic side) whilst some stuff simply doesn’t exist (The Witches Tower, thus Frida doesn’t become a witch. Unless of course she discovers the Librarian’s secret 😉)
I’m not sure how I would call this AU. Maybe the Dark Mountain AU? At least something that aludes to the more grim and gray of this world.

Headcannons for David, Frida and Kaisa?
Send me a character and i’ll give an example of each:
Headcanon A: what I think realistically Headcanon B: what I think is fucking hilarious Headcanon C: what is heart-crushing and awful but fun to inflict on friends Headcanon D: what would never work with canon but the canon is shit so I believe it anyway
David:
A: David’s singing talent is a big source of confidence for him! He’s normally really nervous in front of crowds or having to perform, but when he sings he goes into the zone, all his anxieties forgotten. Sometimes when he’s feeling upset he’ll hum to himself, to help him feel a little bit better.
B: Gil and David look so similar that I’m sure they must be related. So; there’s a moment when David’s parents tell him his cousin’s coming round, and he and Gil suddenly realise they’ve already met. It turns into an awkward situation where they both have to try and hide the fact that they were involved in the Jorts Incident from David’s parents.
C: tw: abuse mention. After it was pointed out that David has a fear of belts, I can’t escape the idea that he was abused at some point. His parents seem nice, so I’m not sure who would use one on him (maybe a cruel teacher or babysitter, and he was too afraid to tell his parents?), but it definitely affected him.
D: David's parents work in the music industry and are both audiophiles to some degree or other. They have a proper modular hi-fi set up at home; once Trevor’s friends find out they spend a week trying to trick David into befriending them so they can use his twin-deck tape recorder to pirate music and games.
Frida:
A: Part of Frida’s dedication to learning magic is that it gives her a new sense of identity. Ever since the ghost incident, she’s struggled with how she wasn’t the person she thought she was, and how she didn’t really feel like herself anymore. Being a witch helps her build herself back up, giving her something that helps define her.
B: Frida’s magic gets a lot more powerful when Hilda’s around due to their familiar bond, and the effect is exponential (so the more powerful the spell, the more it gets enhanced). This causes all kinds of mishaps when Hilda’s there to practice with her, as sometimes she forgets to adjust her power and blows up Tildy’s garden.
C: Frida’s relationship with her parents isn’t very good. They have a lot of expectations for her, and were disappointed when she fell out of the running for Student President. She hasn’t told them she’s a witch, and she doesn’t feel like she can, because she’s worried they won’t be happy (and she’s right about that).
D: Frida absolutely starts seeing Kaisa as her family; when she can’t talk to her parents (which is often), and she doesn’t want to go to Tildy, she goes to Kaisa. The librarian helps her with late-night studies and big-sister advice, and they share stories and have tea. She’s also the first person Frida told when she realised she had a crush on Hilda (she told David next).
Kaisa:
A: Kaisa is really good with directions and addresses; if you ask her where something is in the city, or where to find a certain book, she’ll know without having to check. She navigates the Witches’ Tower by memory alone, and even other witches have to acknowledge that she’s the one to ask if you get lost.
B: Kaisa is considered an honorary ghost; she likes to visit the graveyard at night to talk to the dead, and she’s helped them find out about missing or still-living loved ones several times. Since ghosts love stories, when she goes out she always takes a book or two with her.
C: Kaisa was a very promising witch at Hilda and Frida’s age, but she always struggled under academic pressure. She ended up burning out as a young adult, and went through a very rough patch where she almost convinced herself she was worthless. She ended up becoming Keeper of the Books, but she never got over those self-esteem issues (and never wanted Tildy to find out). (Yes I h/c her as on the spectrum too :))
D: Kaisa would absolutely adopt Hilda and Frida if she could. She considers both of them “her kids” in some way, and she always feels a little proud whenever the council complains about Hilda or Frida does something impressive with her magic. She’ll also help comfort them if they need it, using her cloak to comfort them.

Carpe Diem - Chapter 6
Pairing: Sketchbook (Kaisa/Johanna)
Summary: Carpe diem: one of the five latim mottos of the arcadist, or neoclassical movement. Literally translates to "seize the day"
Picking up where Locus Amoenus left off, this fic follows the lives of Kaisa and Johanna for a couple weeks as their feelings grow and develop. Updated weekly (hiatus is over!!)
Notes: I’m sorry, but I just can’t bring myself to name a human “Alfur” 😭😭 so Alfred it is, I hope it’s not too weird
Exclusive real life picture of Kaisa and Victoria talking: https://itsinkwell.tumblr.com/post/691989113483788288/has-this-been-done-yet
Read it on ao3 or read the first installment on this verse or read the second installment on this verse
Texting while walking was an art.
It was, unfortunately, not one that Kaisa mastered.
Can you meet me in the stems cafe?, she wrote as she made her way out of her lecture room, trying and failing to dodge the swarms of students still tired from the weekend while she did so.
Her phone beeped in a few short seconds, and still moving, she read the notification on her locked screen.
Vic Van Gay:“rn?”
“If you’re free, yeah.”
“k, meet me in 5”
Kaisa put her phone away in her pocket again, making not the usual path she traced towards the front exit on Monday afternoons, but taking a turn at the corridor that would lead her down the stairs where she could head to the STEMs buildings. Before she got much further, the phone buzzed again.
Vic Van Gay: dont u want to go to your cafe though? im not too close to either so its all the same to me
Her reply was a brief ‘No.’, though she didn’t tell her the reasons. She wouldn’t need to, anyway, as soon as she filled Victoria in on what was going on she’d understand why Kaisa didn’t want to have that conversation somewhere she could find acquaintances at.
She climbed down the stairs, arriving at the ground floor where she was greeted by the sight of the humanities garden; it was just the sort of thing she didn’t need to have to deal with right now.
As if to add insult to injury, an all too familiar face was there, on one of the stone benches that surrounded the garden. Johanna was talking to someone else who Kaisa didn’t recognize, a man with tidy blond hair. Given that he had his back to her, Kaisa couldn’t make out any of his features, but even sitting down the guy looked so tiny she was willing to bet he was shorter than even her. Looking at him standing side by side with Johanna must be hilarious, she thought.
Even though her instinct told her to not be bold and avoid giving herself any chances to say something weird, or stupid, or even worse, honest, Kaisa couldn’t help trying to catch Johanna’s eye as she walked by and giving her a smile and a little wave of her hand that wasn’t holding her notebook. That turned out to be a mistake, because as soon as Johanna’s face turned from her companion to Kaisa, the polite and pensive expression on her face melted into a shining smile, and she gestured for her to come closer.
Kaisa had been helpless to do anything but, of course, and soon was being introduced to ‘Alfred’, who she learned was a friend of Johanna’s and an International Relationships major. When she tried to excuse herself as politely as she could, Johanna allowed her to go easily after a warm squeeze of her hand and a confirmation that they’d do their weekly meeting the following day.
As she walked away from that interaction, Kaisa felt the need to let her hair fall around her face to hide her glowing blush. This was ridiculous. She wasn’t a teenager anymore, but no part of her treacherous body seemed to be aware of that, least of all her heart. The more she interacted with Johanna, the further she felt herself fall.
Since they began talking more and Kaisa had started seeing her more like a person than another student she needed to outperform, paying attention to her had been a direct road to becoming fascinated with Johanna. Everything about her was a wonder, especially how out of so many people, she chose to be around her.
It wasn’t even only spending time with her. It had taken her a while to notice, but now that she did it was stark clear that Johanna wasn’t as bright with other people as she was with her. There was something melancholic just beneath her skin, something that she now knew the roots of, but still it never stopped Johanna from having fun and showing the people around her her love and appreciation. She wasn’t all bright smiles and cheerful comments all the time, even if she was still mostly so around Kaisa (or maybe that was just Kaisa’s rose-tinted, heart shaped glasses). Even if she couldn’t control being happy all the time, she could control whether to show affection and warmth to those around her however she could, so she always chose to.
Kaisa had thought Johanna was summer, when in fact, she was autumn. Her contact name on Kaisa’s cellphone still read ‘Golden’, but rather than feeling inaccurate or simplistic, it felt truer than ever now that she’d peeled more layers from the girl than she would ever have imagined she would. She wasn’t a golden retriever, but she was definitely golden. A golden sunset. The golden leaves on the trees. Golden honey on a sugary pastry. Golden flames on a fireplace. The golden, liquid warmth that took over Kaisa’s chest whenever she was near.
Shit, she was really deep in this.
                                                    ………
When Victoria arrived at the cafeteria situated just outside the Physics and Mathematics building, Kaisa had already grabbed them a table, and was eating out of a bag of chips while she read over the notes she’d taken from her earlier lecture.
“You know you’ll probably get more nutrients if you throw all the chips in the bin and eat the package, right?” Was how she announced her arrival when she’d stopped right by Kaisa’s side and the girl still hadn’t acknowledged her presence.
“Bold of you to assume I’m making an effort to survive any longer.”
“Oh, same.” Victoria dug into the packet and grabbed a fistful of the snacks, then moving to sit down right in front of her. “So, what’s this surprise meeting about?”
No time for exchanging meaningless niceties between them. They were both terrible with small talk, so it was usually much easier to just cut to the point.
“Breathe a word of this to anyone and I’ll personally kill you, but…” If the ending of that sentence had been any different, Victoria would have protested about being pointlessly threatened when Kaisa had been the one to call her here in the first place, but she didn’t have the chance, because the next words she heard were enough to freeze her. “There's this girl. I think I like her.”
The professor could do nothing other than stare at her for a beat, only realising that she’d opened her mouth in surprise when Kaisa’s face started looking annoyed. It wasn’t that she hadn’t thought Kaisa was capable of it or anything, it was just that at their third year of friendship, Victoria had already lost hope that she would do age appropriate things, like acting like a stupid college student for once.
“Well, make a move!” She exclaimed, raising her hands in pleading once she processed this new development. “What are you waiting for?”
“I don’t want to ruin our friendship.” The paper package in which her straw had been was being ripped into constantly smaller pieces by Kaisa’s uneasy hands. “We have something nice between us. I don’t want to spoil it.”
Saying it was ‘nice’ was the understatement of the century. It was probably the best thing that Kaisa had ever had in her life that wasn’t her family. And even then, Johanna was each day closer to her mother and sister in the podium of her heart. It was weird, it hadn’t been long since they met but it already felt like she was family too.
“I mean,” Victoria said after chewing on a mouthful of her stolen chips. “If you’re respectful, and she really is your friend, admitting you have feelings for her won’t end the friendship if she doesn’t return your feelings.”
Kaisa wished it were an ‘if’ problem. Even if Johanna had been kind enough to befriend her and seemed to, for some reason, actually enjoy her company, there was no way in this world or in any other that she’d feel the same. Johanna was just on a whole other level, and even if she didn’t act like she was superior, certainly she had to be aware of it. After all that they had shared with each other, she didn’t have any doubts that Johanna would let her down slowly, and would be oh-so-kind about it if she ever were foolish enough to confess. But in the end, there was no way to know if she really wouldn’t make Johanna uncomfortable in the process, and she wasn’t sure she’d be able to stand that. What if she decided she didn’t want a friendship where she had to constantly worry about the nature of the other person’s feelings? Kaisa could say all of this, but instead she chose to raise her eyebrows and use her bitchiest tone of voice.
“Is that why you’re still pining silently for Birgitta?”
Victoria gasped in indignation, bringing her palm (the one that wasn’t still holding chips) down on the table. “That’s totally different! We’re colleagues, it would be too awkward afterwards!”
“Yeah, right.” Rolling her eyes fondly, Kaisa thought about how it was just fair that Victoria would have to stand her lovestruck self now, after she’d had to read through so many self pitying texts about not being able to go after the woman Victoria liked. “Birgitta sounds like she’s too good for you, anyway.”
“Gosh, you’re such a jerk. I don’t even know why I try to help you. You’re lucky I don’t grade anything of yours.”
Making some strands of her hair stick out in odd angles after running a hand through it, Kaisa sighed.
“Am I, though? I’m having the most stressful time at a seminar. The one I met this girl in, actually. No matter what I do, the professor refuses to give me a full grade on my essays.” She saw Victoria give her an exasperated look, and added. “And I know it’s not one of those professors who never gives a ten, there are other students who are getting them.”
“Oh, really?” Even if she probably wouldn’t know any professor from outside of the STEMs division of the university, Victoria decided it was probably the polite thing to ask. Besides, gossip travelled far sometimes. Maybe the name would be related to some other, random piece of information she’d acquired by chance. “Who is that?”
“Professor Abigail Lyman, English department.”
Pensively, Victoria nodded. She knew fully well that Kaisa had no need for perfect scores on every subject all the time like the girl seemed to think, but something else had caught her attention. Just after she befriended Kaisa in her freshman year, she’d done her best to try and find the culprit for spreading those awful rumours about her, and had come up empty handed. But in her research about the board of evaluators who dealt with the matter of student scholarships, she was certain she’d come across that surname. This could be just a case of Kaisa stressing too much after a discipline that wasn’t supposed to be aced either way. But it could also be that she herself had unknowingly given Victoria a clue.
Either way, there was nothing she could do with that supposition right at that moment, so their conversation turned to other topics. It turned out neither of them did much outside of stressing about that university, so the dialogue was a constant positive feedback loop of hating academia and lesbian longing. The infallible sign of a worthwhile friendship.
Before long, they had to come to terms that they had more to do in their lives other than lounge around in the cafeteria eating questionable food. Victoria had to go back to her underfunded lab and Kaisa had a long walk home before she could revise her subjects and do other normal person things, like taking a bath and scrolling mindlessly through tumblr until she realised she’d have to stay up until midnight if she wanted to hit her daily study goals.
The girl scrunched her chips packet into a ball and threw it in the bin along with her cold hibiscus tea bottle, while her friend picked up the coffee stained cup that she ordered at one point and put it by the counter for one of the workers to take back to the kitchen.
As they were leaving, a melody Kaisa had come to recognize began playing on the speakers. She’d blocked out the music coming from them during their stay, choosing to ignore it, but this one was too familiar for it to not register on her mind. It was a melancholic, electronic melody, and the first words came shortly.
It only hurts this much right now
Was what I was thinking
The whole time…
It was all she could do to bite back a grunt while they were paying for what they had consumed. This was one of the songs in the considerably sized list of music she’d been listening to nonstop simply because Johanna liked them, and they reminded Kaisa of her.
Well, not simply that. Since Saturday Labyrinth had been constantly on her headphones for the insufferable reason that it now struck too close to her heart. She left the cafeteria behind with wide and confident steps, but the song stayed with her no matter what she did to try and shake it off, taunting her and seemingly permeating the very air around her so that it was breathed into her lungs, and then found its way to her heart.
Uh oh, I’m falling in love
On no, I’m falling in love
Again…

Frida
Headcanon A: realistic
(kinda drawing on an AU I’m working on but) After the whole Stone Forest debacle, Frida has the idea to establish some sort of sign language system that humans and Trolls can use to communicate. There’s obviously some Trolls who aren’t antagonistic towards humans. Take the Troll with the camera bracelet, for example. That one just hung out for a while with her, David, and Gerda, after all. She thinks that they could possibly establish some sort of agreement between the two species if they could just actually communicate. Verbally, it seems impossible, so a shared sign language could perhaps work. (Hilda doesn’t need one, because for whatever reason, she can still understand Trolls as a human, but everyone needs a way to communicate.) Frida knows it, of course, but so does David, Gerda, Alfur, and Johanna, as well as several Trolls, as they’re the ones that interact with Trolls the most after Hilda.
Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious
Frida often uses her witchcraft to play pranks on the bullies of the town, especially Trevor. It’s not overt, obviously, but Kaisa has taught her several little spells that inconvenience the recipient. It may be something like your shoelaces refusing to stay tied, or always losing your keys, or forgetting your grocery list. Nothing actually harmful, but so, so, so annoying. If she’s feeling particularly vengeful, she’ll ask a Nisse to take one item and hide it in Nowhere Space. Like a sock so you’ll never have a matching pair of socks again.
Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends
Frida really doesn’t have the best relationship with her parents. She resents how strict they are, and it doesn’t help that they keep pushing her to do more and more and more. Their pride always comes with a qualifier- no I’m proud of you’s just because. She always has to do something perfectly to get their praise. As she gets older, she starts to hang out at Hilda’s, Tildy’s, and the library/Witch’s Tower much more than at home. After all, Johanna, Tildy, and Kaisa are much better at being family than her own parents. Frida knows wholeheartedly that her parents wouldn’t approve of her being a witch, either, and it’s just so much easier to be herself whenever she’s not at home. (She’s got sleep stuff at all three places just in case she doesn’t want to go home- everyone fully understands, and it feels so much better to be with people who love her unconditionally.)
Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.
It instantly puts Frida at ease whenever Hilda’s around. I would think that witches and Familiars have powerful bonds, so it just feels right to have her Familiar around at all times. It’s like having all parts of yourself be complete. That bond, as well, makes it so they have an emotional bond. They can feel whatever the other is feeling if the emotion is particularly strong, which makes it a bit easier to cast joint spells if you’re on the same page. (It also makes it harder to lie to each other, which, if your Familiar is Hilda, isn’t necessarily a bad thing.) It also makes it easier to coordinate a vandalism-against-the-Safety-Patrol mission if the kids & co. have split up- walkie-talkies aren’t great for that sort of stuff, anyway

they’re getting ready to go trick-or-treating :)
so this isn’t very canon-compliant…I don’t think any of these properties exist in the time-frame that Hilda and her sis are set in, but if they did these would be their costume choices. and i’m gonna ramble about why under the cut because I can
.
Arwen - Saoirse from Song of the Sea. the more I think about it, the more I think this would absolutely be Arwen’s favourite movie. she would see a lot of herself in Saoirse, with them both growing up on the coast and Saoirse being non-speaking for most of the movie, and she’d like being reminded of her home. this is definitely a regular comfort movie for her and her dad. her costume is just a robe that they glued a million sparkly gems onto but she loves it
Mattie - Matilda from….Matilda. they have the same name, both have magic, and if it existed in the Trolberg library this is absolutely the book Kaisa would’ve used to get Mattie into reading at a young age. Mattie would love the themes about kids standing up for themselves and breaking the rules to right wrongs - even if she’s personally more a fan of the rule-breaking itself than anything else. she probably complained to her parents that she didn’t have enough books to go with the costume until Kaisa caved and put a weightlessness spell on a whole stack so she could carry them around with her all night
Harvey - Ash from Pokemon. there’s nothing deep going on here, I just love pokemon so Harvey also gets to love pokemon, as a treat 😌 he’s already a fan of videogames and I think he’d identify with the idea of striking out on your own and going on adventures and meeting weird creatures, especially since that’s kind of his day-to-day life with his friends anyway. also since pokemon started in the 90′s and that’s broadly hilda-time-period-adjacent I think this could actually straight-up be canon for him lmao. the first time he sees a marra he tries to throw a pokeball at it
also Mattie’s trick-or-treat bucket is Hilda’s old one from my drawing of her last year, I just wanted to point that out :> and thanks for reading if you made it this far down :)

I don’t like the Witch Episode
Note: (This is a copypasta I made and have posted a few other places. I’m bored (and have a headache) so I’m just going to copy and paste it here)
I don't like this episode. It's not because Frida is the witch instead of Hilda but I do feel like the episode tried to make Hilda look dumb to make Frida look smarter. I mean, am I really suppose to believe that trusting a giant fish wasn't the first thing Hilda thought of? Or that Frida would just throw herself into a pit of spikes before Hilda would? Also I don't understand why Frida wants to be a witch, I get the magic and stuff but the Committee of Three tried to have her and her friends killed over a late library book. And she really wants to be in the same group as them? If it wasn't for Matilda they would've been thrown in the Void immediately and they would've likely done it again right after they got out. It was also stated that they use "any excuse to throw people in the void" which strongly implies that this is a common thing. I really don't get why Frida or Hilda would want anything to do with the people who would do this. I get that Matilda is nice to them (and is a pretty good character in her own right) but the Committee of Three are just terrible and the fact that they're just allowed to kill people over stupid stuff like that just annoys me. I get that we're not really suppose to like them (at least I hope we aren't) but I still don't really get why anyone (not just Hilda and Frida) would want anything to do with people like them. Other then that there isn't much that stands out. The plot twist didn't work because they made it way too obvious from the first challenge (also they showed Frida doing magic and holding a wand in the posters) and the witches were just boring in my opinion but that may have been the point. Hilda herself says "witches really know how to take the fun out of magic" so maybe we aren't suppose to find them interesting. I certainly don't.
Something else I didn't like. Why did it need to be a life or death thing? They could've just had Kaisa's job as a witch be in danger not her life. Hilda had always been about low stake adventures yet they raised the stakes this season for seemingly no reason. It probably would've been better if the stakes were gradually raised over time and not just immediately. Like, have the adventures get more and more dangerous as the season goes on eventually getting to the Stone Forest where the stakes are raise up to 11. It honestly hurts the episode and makes the Committee of Three look so much worse for trying to murder Hilda and Frida who are children. There really wasn't any real reason to make the stakes in every episode this season so high. I get wanting to do something more intense as the show goes on but making every new episode life or death isn't the right way in my opinion. I’m not saying that there shouldn’t be high stakes but I eel like The Witch didn’t really need those high stakes.
Now that I think about it, the Committee of Three could be a subvention of a subvention. In most media that has secret witch societies the witches are portrayed as wrongfully hated, yet in Hilda they don't appears to be hated and have equally as (if not even more) corrupt and incompetent leaders as Trolberg (they try to have their own killed over library books and had to relay on 3 children and a low level witch to resolve the Tide Mice issue) so maybe they're making them bad leaders to continue their "fuck the police" (pardon my language) theme this season? or maybe I'm overthinking it?
anyway that’s my opinion, I know many of you will likely disagree. I respect your opinions and I hope you can respect my opinion.
Edit: Something else I forgot to mention was that I also don’t like that Hilda is Frida’s familiar. It just feels really weird to me because Familiars are often referred to as pets and this has led to people making really weird fetish art of them (stuff like Frida having Hilda on a leash, ew). I could forgive it if it was important to the story but it’s not. It doesn’t really come up again after the episode (except for that one time that it’s mentioned) and everything Hilda does for Frida she easily could’ve done as a friend. The familiar thing can be entirely cut from the story and absolutely nothing would change. It’s honestly so forgettable that I completely forgot about it when I first made this post. I’ve barely seen anyone bring it up on it’s own. That’s how little it adds to the story. Overall, Hilda being Frida’s familiar could’ve (and should’ve) been cut without changing anything to the story really.

can’t see forward ‘cause it disappears
Rating: Gen
Summary: Lyra returns to the campsite after chasing a ghost. It doesn’t quite go the way Lee expected it to.
His Dark Materials Fan Week | Day four: favourite scene / moment
“It’s about control, isn’t it? ’Cause if you can remove someone’s soul, you can do anything.”
[Read on Ao3]
Lee watched as Lyra rode away on Iorek, feeling slightly apprehensive about this whole situation.
It was probably just a bad feeling, but Lee never ignored those. He’d learned the hard way a few times that it was always better to trust his instincts – and trust them he did. Hester nudged his foot a bit to get his attention, and he looked down.
“You’re thinking really loudly,” she remarked, concerned. “I know you’re worried about the kid, but she’ll be fine with Iorek.”
“I’m not – I’m not just worried about the kid,” he admitted softly. “I’m with Coram on this one, I think there’s something really wrong here.”
He’d spoken with the man about how they could trust Iorek to take Lyra to the village and bring her back safely, and he’d confided in Lee that he didn’t like this at all. Kaisa had spoken up about the importance of looking into it – whatever it was, anyway – and Coram trusted the dæmon, so that had been that. Still, Lee couldn’t shake the feeling that something was… off.
He went to Lord John Faa’s tent to talk to him about it, but the man asked him about the layout of this area and had completely distracted him into mapping out the entirety of the region that Lee had flown over, marking out unique hills and landmarks so that they could narrow down the places where the Station might be located.
A cluster of shouts broke them from their intense discussion, and Lee realised that it was already nightfall by the time they ran out of the tent.
“What’s going on?” he asked one of the gyptians.
“Lyra’s back.”
The two of them sprinted towards the towering form of Iorek, who Lee could now see in the light of the campfires, but the off feeling from before kept him from moving forward. Lyra stumbled off Iorek’s back, pulling a blanket-covered lump behind her, and the clearing went silent. Ma Costa broke away, screaming a name – Billy.
Oh, no.
The child was unresponsive as the distraught mother pulled him into her arms, and –
“Where’s Ratter? Where’s his dæmon?”
Lee swore under his breath, locking eyes with Hester. God, was that what the General Oblation Board had set out to do? John Faa ran to her side, snapping Lee out of his horror, and Lee moved as well, making a beeline for Iorek.
“What happened back there?” he asked lowly, but his friend only growled. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Lyra trying to join the Costas and hastily reached out to grab her shoulder.
“Best if we leave them to it,” he said, pulling her back by her coat. “Trust me when I tell you that they love you, but this… they won’t want you there for it.” He doesn’t know how else to explain to her that their grief was to be a private moment, but Lyra seemed to understand.
“It was,” she started, and shook her head. “He was without his dæmon. Like – like a ghost.”
He remembered what she’d told him that morning, what the alethiometer had said about ghosts, and shivered. Lee had seen all sorts of creatures in the North – panserbjørne, night-ghasts, cliff-ghasts, foxes and other regular woodland creatures that phased in and out of reality… but this, by far, was the worst thing Lee had seen in his life, worse than when he’d had to listen to Pierre McConville’s awful, sadistic speech about how he tormented people and their dæmons.
“It was like he wasn’t there,” she finished, voice cracking with emotion, and Lee stopped himself from pulling her into a full hug by resting a hand on her shoulder. “Like he couldn’t even hear me.”
“This must be what they do, to the ones they take,” Lee said gravely. Normally he wouldn’t confide in a twelve-year-old, but he suspected that Lyra could handle such a dark revelation. He wasn’t about to lie to her, either.
“It’s horrible,” she gasped. “It’s worse than anything… why would they take someone’s dæmon?”
Hester curled in on herself, and Lee felt like doing the same – like a tortoise retreating into its shell, he didn’t want to even think of something so horrible happening to anyone, let alone someone he knew. He couldn’t imagine being separated from Hester in such a cruel way, but he couldn’t get lost thinking about such a fate now. He swallowed his trepidation and faced Lyra squarely.
“It’s about control, isn’t it,” he said slowly. “’Cause if you can remove someone’s soul, you can do anything.”
Lyra looked up at him, alarmed by the thought. Lee was about to comfort her when Iorek let out a sound that was a mix of a growl and a rumble before moving away from them. Lyra’s expression turned somewhat quizzical, and Lee squeezed her shoulder before explaining.
“Yeah, our furry friend here doesn’t deal too well with emotion,” he said, frowning at Iorek’s retreating form. “Never has. He’ll be back by first light.”
Lyra nodded, still looking somewhat dazed. Lee waited till she faced him fully to continue speaking, making sure she knew how serious he was.
“You did a brave thing, kid, a good thing. I’m proud of you.” She stares up at him, and, dammit, he was going to remove that uncertain look with any amount of assurance it took to do so. “You trusted your instincts, and you found Billy.”
She nodded slowly, accepting his words but not really responding. Lee understood that that was all he’d get from her that evening, and gently led her over to his tent – his belongings still half-unpacked on account of spending most of the day with maps instead.
“Would it bother you to stay at my tent for a while?” he asked her, making sure that she wouldn’t be uncomfortable – he was still basically a stranger to her, with all of a day’s worth of conversation between them.
“I don’t mind,” she responded, and the whisper was laced with enough exhaustion to convince Lee to let her sleep without interruption. He might have been cautious to leave the tent had he been alone in this corner, but thankfully, Iorek was close enough to notice any sign of trouble. He swiftly laid out her bedroll and a few furs so that the cold wouldn’t bother her and stepped out once he was certain she wouldn’t wander off.
If, instead of sleeping, she wanted a private conversation with her dæmon, he wouldn’t begrudge her that either.
“She’s hard to dislike,” Hester murmured, as they make their way to Farder Coram.
“Hmm?” Lee bent down and scooped her up, still rattled from all the talk about severing dæmons.
“You’re thinking about the kid.” It wasn’t a question. “I said, she’s hard to dislike.”
“We already knew that,” Lee responded. “She talked my ear off all day yesterday and I still couldn’t be mad for the distraction because she was so excited.”
“You ain’t ever mad,” Hester countered. “Only when they really deserve it.”
It took a moment, but when Lee got her meaning, he stopped in his tracks. “Hester, being angry at the Oblation Board isn’t going to help any of us right now. The poor kid – Billy – might die before sunrise, and who knows how many others are in line for something so cruel? Our priority should be to stop them from doing it to the rest.”
“Lee, we’re heading to do just that,” she assured him.
“Then why do I get the feeling we’re leading Lyra into a trap?”
“For some reason, I don’t think this is a trap. She’s safe with us, anyway. We’re going to protect her, and we’re going to help her finish what she set out to do. She came up North for a reason, Lee,” Hester reminded him, and a new resolve burned through him.
“Damn right we are.”

Akane quietly enters her home, loosening the ribbon she wears in her hair. Today had been a long day for her,she was hoping for a peaceful night back at home. However all that hope for peace quickly vanishes when she sees her little sisters standing by the door holding her red pointe shoes.
“Izumi,Kaede.”
She says calmly, acting like she doesn’t see her old ballet equipment.
“Akane,where have you been?”
“Were you on a date with Mister Tokinada?”
The two ask right after each other. Akane sighs gently and shakes her head.
“Girls I told you I was going to work and Kaede you know better than to call Mister Tsunayashiro by his first name and of course I wasn’t. There’s nothing remotely romantic between me and him.”
She gently scolds. Izumi giggles as Kaede pouts.
“Yeah Kaede! She’s totally secret dating Seinosuke.”
“I’m not involved with Mister Yamada either and don’t call him his first name either, you’re strangers. You two really need to stop making such grand assumptions about me and men I talk to,next thing you know you’ll be saying me and Mister Kira are together because I’m trying to help him as well.”
Akane scolds again, joking and teasing her younger sisters a little at the end of her statement. Normally she’d scold them longer for their romance based rumors and how disrespectful they are to the other people. Hell normally she’d act extra cross with them for being so casual with Tsunayashiro’s name. But they’re just teenagers who are just excited their big sister knows “famous” people. She can forgive them as long as they keep this to themselves. She’d hate for any of them to find out what her little sisters were thinking about.
“Anyways Nee-chan,”
Kaede starts, changing the subject and purposely using a nickname Akane has a hard time saying no to,
“Doooo you know what month it is?”
Akane sighs softly and nods.
“It’s December,I’m guessing you two want me to do the performance?”
“Mhm!! We even got you a new outfit for it!!”
Izumi says, pulling a box out from behind her back and handing it to Akane. The noirette sighs then nods to them, knowing it’s pointless to fight.
“Fine,I’ll do it, but did you ask Kaisa if she wanted to watch?”
“Well no, but we thought you’d rather her try sleeping.”
Kaede mumbles, looking at the ground. Akane gave a little hum then took her dancing shoes from her gently.
“It’s fine,I’ll just do it again if she does want to see.”
She coos gently, patting her little sister on the head. Izumi giggles and holds up a video camera in her other hand than the box.
“Actually Akane we got a video camera so we could record you for her!”
She chirps. Akane chuckles lightly and takes the box from her.
“Wonderful, now you two go get the stage ready. Ask servants for help if you need to.”
She hums as she walks off to change. It’d been so long since Akane actually took her dance lessons. However ballet was always one of her talents, had she’d not grown so tall she could’ve gone professional with it according to her old coaches. Despite have no real future in it,Akane kept practicing it. Her little sisters had always been mesmerized by her dancing from a young age, along with things like her singing. So when they’d picked up an interest with a movie from the world of the living,a new December tradition for the three formed.
Every December Akane would do a ballet dance while singing the song Once Upon a December. She even had a small room with a low, but wide stage and everything added onto the house for it. The younger two of the trio would always get so excited about it,they started even getting her custom costumes for it just a few years back. Truthfully the tradition embarrassed Akane a little, she never felt like she was that good at dancing or singing. Hell she’d be mortified if anyone besides those in the household saw her little annual performance. But seeing the happiness on her sisters’ faces made it all worth it for her.
It took little time for the therapist to get ready, she was practiced with this by this point in her life. She glances at herself one last time in the mirror before she got on stage. The stage lights flick on and the music starts. Akane then starts her dance and starts to sing while her little sisters watched and filmed her. She held back her blush, pushing away her feelings of being camera shy. She didn’t have time to focus on that, she has to focus on this right now. Soon enough the short song ended though and the room lights came back on.
Akane smiles at her sisters and yawns.
“Goodnight you two,I’m going to bed now. Don’t stay up to late.”
The two nod snd watch her older sister walk out of the room.
“... So we’re still going to post this everywhere right?”
“Oh totally, big sis is going to be the talk of the town finally with her performance going viral!”
